There are few R/C modeling activities more peaceful than sailing a yacht on summer’s evening enjoying a gentle, constant breeze on your preferred pond. Likewise, few activities can be more exciting than racing like a captain in the America’s Cup, using a model yacht against similarly-equipped competitors that places your sailing skills to the test!

Bancroft is pleased to offer the world-renown DragonFlite 95 V2 sailing yacht, a model perfectly suited to either activity. Manufactured by Joysway Model Co., it’s now available for sale through Motion RC!

Available in both PNP (no transmitter or receiver) and RTR (includes transmitter and receiver) versions, these models arrive highly prefabricated and ready for final assembly and rigging.

V2 improvements include a new, improved sail winch servo and a revised boat stand that allows both vertical or horizontal securement of the model for convenient storage, transport, and maintenance.

With active chapters in eight countries, DF racing has become an economical and enjoyable portal into the sport of RC sailing. Visit www.dfracing.world for information, rules, competition chapters, and events.

Not all scale models are equal. Events like Record Day, Tug Day and Navy Day organised by the average model boat club around the country proves that to be true.

And then you get these WOW Models that are so detailed, you would not expect them anywhere near water.

Cape Town Scale Model Boat Club offers you a place where you can regularly meet likeminded people with an interest in radio controlled model boats to have fun, play games and just relax after a hard day’s work.

Exclusively for electric model boat owners and builders, Sonstraal Dam is the only waterbody in the City of Cape Town demarcated for RC boating.

Cape Town Scale Model Boat Club is the first of the “New Generation Clubs” that was established after this demarcation opened the door to end a decade of exclusivity at a public park.

What is a “new generation club”?

A New Generation Club is a club that is owned by a company or person and is open to people who has a “ can do ” attitude and who is willing to play hard, work hard and laugh loud; people who are young at heart and enjoy being part of a very unique and rewarding recreational activity.

Traditional clubs have committees, and from experience we know these committees are often the reason why nothing moves forward into the 21st century. You can spot a traditional club by its website. Just try to use your phone.

• Go-getters who is willing to adapt to change and progress,

At the Cape Town Scale Model Boat Club, it is our vision to facilitate Radio Controlled Model Boating Activities as a Recreational Sport and Hobby for the benefit of all stakeholders, including the residents around Sonstraal Park and the dam.

We constantly strive to create innovative ways to have fun.

We advocate improvement of Sonstraal Dam as the only demarcated dam in the City of Cape Town where radio controlled model boats may be used.

We believe in rewards for a job well done, and regard each member as a part of the team that makes RC boating a lifestyle, and not just a way to pass the time waiting for the Ring of the Bell.

Our Approach

The traditional model boat clubs with their commodores, chairpersons and committees have been instrumental in the gradual decay of RC boating, mostly because not all good people are good leaders.  Leadership does not come from a position of power. It comes from a vision within.  And at the Cape Town Scale Model Boat Club, we know that these leaders will rise to the occasion, not because they are nominated at an AGM, but because they are born to lead by example; not by rule book. The time of the “founding fathers” no longer has relevance in a modern society.

The Cape Town Scale Model Boat Club is not a “member” based club, but more a destination; a place, where people can meet to have a bit of recreational fun using our own model boats. Our strength does not lie in how many people we can write up for annual fees, but in how many people are participating in our activities.

We are a member of the South African Scale Model Boat Association, an umbrella society of RC boat clubs responsible for the promotion of RC boating in South Africa and the management of digital membership cards and RC boating permits.

An abandoned, burned boat and 2 missing men: South African authorities investigate maritime mystery

CAPE TOWN, South Africa — South African authorities searching for a missing charter boat captain are concerned about possible foul play after they discovered his vessel burned and abandoned on a beach in neighboring Mozambique, but no sign of him or the unknown man who hired him.

The National Sea Rescue Institute raised the alarm over captain John Matambu and his passenger after they didn’t return to Sodwana Bay on South Africa’s northeastern coast on Saturday evening having gone out early that morning.

The charred wreck of Matambu’s speed boat, Magnum Too, was discovered by a search plane on Sunday in the Dobela area of Mozambique, some 170 kilometers (105 miles) up the coast.

“Both men remain missing in unknown circumstances,” the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

Matambu’s cousin told local media that a petrol canister and a medical kit were found near the boat.

The NSRI said some of the circumstances “appear to indicate that foul play may be involved.”

The man who hired Matambu to take him out on the 21-foot (6.4-meter) boat apparently gave false contact details, NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said. The booking was made for a man, his wife and a child, but only the man boarded the boat, Lambinon said.

“Hopes are that this has all been a misunderstanding, and foul play was not involved, but at this stage all possibilities are being examined,” Lambinon told national broadcaster SABC. “The fact that the boat has been found across the border is obviously the difficulty now.”

The NSRI received a report that the boat was spotted at 10 p.m. Saturday night heading north toward Mozambican waters, it said, the last sighting before its charred hull was discovered the following day.

Taps have run dry across South Africa’s largest city in an unprecedented water crisis

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — For two weeks, Tsholofelo Moloi has been among thousands of South Africans lining up for water as the country’s largest city, Johannesburg, confronts an unprecedented collapse of its water system affecting millions of people.

Residents rich and poor have never seen a shortage of this severity. While hot weather has shrunk reservoirs, crumbling infrastructure after decades of neglect is also largely to blame. The public’s frustration is a danger sign for the ruling African National Congress, whose comfortable hold on power since the end of apartheid in the 1990s faces its most serious challenge in an election this year.

A country already famous for its hourslong electricity shortages is now adopting a term called “watershedding” — the practice of going without water, from the term loadshedding, or the practice of going without power.

Moloi, a resident of Soweto on the outskirts of Johannesburg, isn’t sure she or her neighbors can take much more.

They and others across South Africa’s economic hub of about 6 million people line up day after day for the arrival of municipal tanker trucks delivering water. Before the trucks finally arrived the day before, a desperate Moloi had to request water from a nearby restaurant.

There was no other alternative. A five-liter (1.3-gallon) bottle of water sells for 25 rand ($1.30), an expensive exercise for most people in a country where over 32% of the population is unemployed.

“We are really struggling,” Moloi said. “We need to cook, and children must also attend school. We need water to wash their clothes. It’s very stressful.”

Residents of Johannesburg and surrounding areas are long used to seeing water shortages — just not across the whole region at once.

Over the weekend, water management authorities with Gauteng province, which includes Johannesburg and the capital, Pretoria, told officials from both cities that the failure to reduce water consumption could result in a total collapse of the water system. That means reservoirs would drop below 10% capacity and would need to be shut down for replenishment.

That could mean weeks without water from taps — at a time when the hot weather is keeping demand for water high. The arrival of chilly winter in the Southern Hemisphere is still weeks away.

No drought has been officially declared, but officials are pleading with residents to conserve what water they can find. World Water Day on Friday is another reminder of the wider need to conserve.

Outraged activists and residents call this a crisis years in the making. They blame officials’ poor management and the failure to maintain aging water infrastructure. Much of it dates to the years just after the end of apartheid, when basic services were expanded to the country’s Black population in an era of optimism.

The ANC long rode on that enthusiasm, but now many South Africans are asking what happened. In Johannesburg, run by a coalition of political parties, anger is against authorities in general as people wonder how maintenance of some of the country’s most important economic engines went astray.

A report published last year by the national department of water and sanitation is damning. Its monitoring of water usage by municipalities found that 40% of Johannesburg’s water is wasted through leaks, which includes burst pipes.

In recent days, even residents of Johannesburg’s more affluent and swimming pool-dotted suburbs have found themselves relying on the arrival of municipal water tankers, which came as a shock to some.

Residents in one neighborhood, Blairgowrie, came out to protest after lacking water for nearly two weeks.

A local councilor in Soweto, Lefa Molise, told The Associated Press he was not optimistic that the water shortage would be resolved soon.

Water cuts have become so frequent that he urges residents to reserve any supply they can find, especially when he said authorities give little or no warning about upcoming shortages.

The water tankers are not enough to keep residents supplied, he added.

An older resident, Thabisile Mchunu, said her taps have been dry since last week. She now hauls what water she can find in 20-liter buckets.

“The sad thing is that we don’t know when our taps are going to be wet again,” she said.

Rand Water, the government entity that supplies water to more than a dozen municipalities in Gauteng province, this week pleaded with residents to reduce their consumption. The interlinked reservoirs supplying its system are now at 30% capacity, and high demand on any of them affects them all.

Even South Africa’s notoriously troubled electricity system has played a role in the water problem, at least in part.

On Tuesday, Johannesburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda said a power station that supplies electricity to one of the city’s major water pumping stations had been struck by lighting, causing the station to fail.
