Cruises on Australia's Murray River

The Murray River and its surroundings are normally overlooked as a significant cruising region of international appeal but many visitors are now discovering the Murray River is a wonderfully natural and great place enjoy. A slow river that easily touches your soul and satisfies the inner spirit.

Spud Hilton, San Francisco Chronicle Staff Writer recently stated "The Murray is the ultimate lazy river, a 100-million-year-old ribbon that winds 1,470 miles through South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales, passing farms, Aboriginal homelands, red gum forests, holiday cottages, arid scrub and towering ochre-colored limestone cliffs festooned with snow-white cockatoos."

Mornings you'll find mirror-perfect water, not yet disturbed by by a sole. As the mist gently rises over the water, golden sunrays pierce the huge river red gums and pelicans silently look for fish as they'd done the night before. You should encounter incredible wildlife including kangaroos, emus, koalas, goannas, kookaburras and much more. You'll find other early risers will enjoy the serenity with you but there's plenty of quiet spots to be with yourself and a nice cup of tea or coffee.

Traffic along the river is fairly minimal. You'll find milk boats, fishing craft, some ferries in South Australia, occasional small paddleboats and a diverse amarda of houseboats (Murray River is the houseboating capital of Australia). The Murray is used for by watersports enthusiasts with ski boats and canoes and kayaks .

Part of the rich history of Australia is it's Murray-Darling paddle steamers . The Murray River was used by more than a hundred paddle steamers and barges during the heydays to the late 1800's to deliver supplies to settlements upstream and returned loaded with wool and wheat. When the railroads opened up the territory by 1890, the paddle steamers ceased as a popular mode of transportation. Nowadays a few remain for leisure cruising on the Murray yet Australia still has the largest range of active paddle steamers in the world.

Naturally on each cruise you'll receive a mixture of information on river history, folklore, environmental information, free time to chat, relax and much more. Some longer cruises allow you the opportunity to get off the boat and experience Aboriginal culture, shearing exhibitions and other tours to learn, engage and explore the local region. You can enjoy local walks at some of the historic towns or cliff top climbs.

Back on board while the rugged and beautiful world of the Murray River landscapes slowly pass you by, you'll stay in comfortable and clean cabins on overnight accommodation for the longer cruises. Most cruises offer meal and food options. Short river cruises may offer you light snacks or cafeteria style food, while the longer overnight cruises offer great dining with food that is professionally prepared (and yes you can even experience Vegemite if you want one of Australia's great challenges).

One of the greatest things you'll take away from your Murray River cruise is an appreciation of the Murray's abundant beauty and intrinsic value to Australia's culture and meaning. Aboriginal occupation of the region in some parts dates back over 40,000 years. There are opportunities for guided indigenous walks, where guides talk and showcase the importance of the land and their relationship with the river. From tranquil backwaters less than an hour from Adelaide to sprawling wetlands brimming with life in the Riverland, the Murray River carves its way more than 650 kilometres through South Australia.

Captain your own houseboat and experience this staggering waterway from the vantage point of your own hotel with a rudder. Slow down to river speed as ancient gums, picturesque riverside towns, masses of wildlife, sprawling mallees and towering cliffs pass by. Whether you’re planning a quick weekend punt, a four-night cruise or week-long jaunt, here’s our guide to houseboating on the Murray River, departing from and returning to Mannum.

HOUSEBOAT HIRE

WEEKEND HOUSEBOAT ITINERARY

Mannum to bowhill.

36kms approximately 5 hours cruise time

Plonked on the lush banks of the Murray River, Mannum is a tranquil riverside town and popular spot to embark on a houseboat adventure. Before setting sail, spend a few hours exploring; grab lunch at a local pub on the banks of the river, visit Hermann Gass Bird Sanctuary , hike to an impressive network of waterfalls in winter, then cast off on your adventure.

The journey upriver to Bowhill is a cruisy 5 hours, and an ice-cold beer awaits your arrival. A mecca for holiday makers and adventure lovers, the town is home to a handful of riverside shacks and its wide banks make conditions ideal for waters ports. Tie up for the night, then pull up a seat on the Bowhill General Store, serving a delicious pub-style menu. Stock up on supplies for the journey ahead before retreating to your houseboat to be lulled to by the gentle ebbs and flows of the river.

Bowhill to Walker Flat

22kms approximately 3 hours cruise time

Wake up to a chorus of bird song and sip your morning coffee from the deck of your houseboat as the sun trickles over the land. Experiencing sunrise on the river can be described as nothing short of spiritual. Cup filled, continue the journey upriver to Walker Flat. Bordered by imposing, ochre-coloured cliffs, find a spot to settle in for the night and kick back as the setting sun turns the cliffs into a glowing gold spectacular.

*If you’ve only got the weekend on the boat, then it’s time to meander back downstream to Mannum, stopping for a picnic on the banks of the river at Lake Carlet.

FOUR DAY HOUSEBOAT ITINERARY

Walker flat to big bend.

18kms approximately 2.5 hours cruise time

Continuing from the two-day itinerary, rise early at Walker Flat and hit the river. The next leg of the voyage takes in one of the most jaw-dropping landscapes along the Murray River. Upriver from Walker Flat, cruise past the tallest cliffs and longest bend on the Murray River at the aptly named Big Bend. Big bend to swan reach.

Some 96 kilometres upriver from Mannum, arrive in the picturesque river port of Swan Reach; the farthest destination on the week-long itinerary. Find a secluded mooring to claim for the night and spend the afternoon canoeing or kayaking down tranquil backwaters and billabongs teeming with birdlife. Cool off with a swim or cast a line and try your luck fishing for the illusive Murray Cod. If carp is all you hook, venture onto land for dinner with a view from your perch atop golden cliffs at the Swan Reach Hotel.

Swan Reach to Nildottie

21kms approximately 3 hours cruise time

Meander back downstream to start your relaxed return; your next destination is home to one of the South Australia’s most significant Aboriginal sites. Moor at Nildottie and step off your houseboat and back in time millions of years into the ancestral home of the Nganguraku People. Nildottie is home to Ngaut Ngaut Conservation Park , where towering cliffs formed by an extinct seabed are the canvas for ancient rock art. The park is only accessible with a guide from the Mannum Aboriginal Community Association Inc so book ahead. This stretch of the river is also home to abundant wildlife including kangaroos and wombats.

Nildottie to Younghusband

57kms approximately 8 hours cruise time

Leave early; the cruise to Younghusband is the lengthiest of the journey. An idyllic riverside settlement, Younghusband is in prime position to savour the final moments on river time. Launch your canoe or kayak from your cliffside mooring and explore flood plains and lagoons. Enjoy dinner on the boat and a final sundowner drink as the sunsets over the river.

Younghusband to Mannum

18 kms approximately 2.6 hours cruise time

Mannum lies a leisurely three-hour punt away, so enjoy a final sunrise breakfast then slowly make your way back down river to return your houseboat. Most hiring companies have a return time of around 10am, so set off early to return to Mannum in time.

Welcome Aboard the Proud Mary

The Proud Mary was designed by naval architect Peter James and built back in 1982. It was inspired by the vessels that cruise the legendary Mississippi in the United States of America, and the original paddle steamers that provided vital transport along the Murray River during the 1800s.

The Proud Mary features 18 riverview cabins, each with ensuites and access to outdoor balcony areas. Suites are configured with either a double or twin beds and include air-conditioning units, tea and coffee making facilities, hair dryers and daily servicing.

This boat boasts 18 spacious river-view cabins that have been renovated, a lounge, a dining area, and well-appointed bar.

Order a drink and venture out onto the boat’s spacious open decks or enjoy the intimate lounge and dining area. The captain’s commentary may spark an interest to peruse the vessel’s resource centre and learn more from one of the many books available. You may like to enjoy a cuppa from the continuous tea and coffee available in the dining room or browse the souvenirs available for purchase.

Explore at your leisure any of the spectacular mooring locations; enjoy a walk through the bushland or discover the backwaters in one of the available canoes. For those who like a spot of fishing, reels, and bait are available, simply ask one of the crew.

Wi-Fi is available on board. 350MB is free and then the cost is $10 per 1GB. Service can vary along the river.

Your boat boasts 18 spacious river-view cabins. With only one room type, each cabin has twin or double beds, individually controlled air conditioning units, private en-suite. tea & coffee making facilities and hair dryers. Each cabin is approximately 9 square meters and the ensuite is 2.5 square metres. All rooms offer spectacular river views and open onto balcony areas. Cabins are serviced twice daily.

Cabin Selection – Although all cabins are lovely, en-suite, outside cabins with a river view, some passengers may prefer a cabin on the View Deck (middle deck) for easy access. Other passengers may like the Sun Deck (top deck) as it is a little quieter. We are happy to request the deck of your choice, however, a surcharge applies per cabin per night will be applied for all cabin requests. This cruise boat is a boutique vessel providing an intimate and friendly atmosphere, offering a true insight into South Australia’s Outback. A modern vessel built to provide the ideal way to experience Australia’s most famous river, The River Murray. Accommodating only 36 passengers in deluxe river view cabins, the boat provides a unique nature-based experience with a touch of luxury.

The vessel, originally designed by Mr Peter James, a Naval Architect was built in Berri, South Australia on the banks of the River Murray, by the Berri Ship building company in 1982. Purpose-built with a shallow draft, allowing the vessel to safely navigate shallow sections of the river. The original style of the vessel was taken from the Mississippi River cruisers.

The first cruise was in August 1982 from Murray Bridge in South Australia. The proprietors have owned & operated the vessel since it was built and has been refurbished on a periodical basis since 1982. The vessel produces its own power from onboard generators and wastewater is stored onboard and then removed when in port in accordance with environmental guidelines.

Murray River Paddlesteamers unveils 5-Star riverboat for 2025

Murray River Paddlesteamers has officially announced the 2025 launch date and the commencement of bookings for PS Australian Star, Australia's inaugural 5-star overnight riverboat.

The new luxury vessel , valued at $6.75 million, will offer year-round, all-inclusive cruises of up to a week on the Murray River from Echuca (Victoria).

Bookings for the 38-passenger  Australian Star will be open to the public on February 5, 2024, with early-bird savings and bonuses available for bookings made by February 29, 2024. Pre-registration for the Australian Star Members Club allows Australians to secure bookings for the first sailings starting February 1, 2024. Attendees at the Geelong Travel Expo can also book in person at the cruise line's stand on February 4, 2024. Anticipated demand for the maiden cruises of the 35-meter (115-foot) vessel is high.

PS Australian Star's inaugural cruises are set for a 4-night sailing on May 5, 2025, followed by a 3-night cruise on May 9, 2025, continuing throughout the year. Guests have the option to combine both for a 7-night journey from May 12, 2025, onwards.

Despite initial plans for a public competition to name the luxury vessel, Murray River Paddlesteamers has confirmed that PS Australian Star will retain its working title, as it resonates strongly with Australians.

The vessel, being constructed in a specially designed shed beside the Murray River in Mildura, will be Australia's first 5-star river cruise vessel, the largest paddlesteamer in the Southern Hemisphere, and the only wood-fired, 5-star, accommodated paddlesteamer globally.

Supported by $2.25 million in funding from the Victorian Government’s Regional Tourism Investment Fund, PS Australian Star will succeed the smaller and older PS Emmylou, currently offering overnight cruises on the Murray.

Fares for the inaugural 2025-2026 season of PS Australian Star have been released, starting from $2670 per person for a 3-night cruise, $3560 per person for a four-night sailing, and $6280 per person for a 7-night journey, all twin-share. Departing from the historic river port of Echuca in Victoria, the fares include onboard meals, daily shore excursions, V Line rail transport between Melbourne and Echuca, cruise transfers, Wi-Fi, gratuities, selected beers and wines with dinner, and soft drinks, bottled water, and tea/coffee throughout the cruise.

Demand high for Victorian houseboat community as Australians enjoy work-from-home lifestyle

John McIntyre is hard at work while birdsong rings out across the river red gum forest and fish splash around in the Murray River.

He works an office job, handling complaints for a major energy retailer.

But he undertakes the work remotely from his houseboat moored a 15-minute drive just off the Murray River in Victorian waters near Mildura.

"It's no different from working from home anywhere else," Mr McIntyre said.

"I've got the kitchen there, got the fridge there."

His company only requires him to be in the office for two meetings per year.

"Not bad," Mr McIntyre said.

"I went down in December [last year]."

Mr McIntyre relies on having a strong internet connection for his work, which means he uses a satellite system.

"Over the past three years, I lost it for 15 minutes one day," he said.

"The next satellite came across and I was OK."

There are about 40 spots at the Bruce's Bend marina, for which the site's private owners charge between $300 to $500 per month in mooring fees.

The marina is full and, according to management, another 18 people are on the waiting list.

Tight regional housing market

The vacancy rate for rentals in Mildura, which is comprised of about 25,000 homes, is below 1 per cent.

In addition, rents in Mildura have increased by more than 11 per cent within the past 12 months.

Bruce's Bend managers said they were in the process of creating an extra 16 berths.

Mr McIntyre said he had been travelling around while on the waiting list and happened to be moored nearby when the owners told him he would be granted a spot.

"I was pretty lucky," he said.

"August this year will be three years, so it's been good."

Mr McIntyre said it was a great home and friends and family loved visiting as well.

"It's a really good holiday because we took the boat and went for a drive down the river," he said.

According to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, more than 29,000 houseboats and cabins were counted across Australia in the 2021 census, a near 12-per cent increase from 2016.

In New South Wales' jurisdiction, however, the law does not allow people to live on houseboats permanently.

One in 10 Australians working remote

RMIT University senior lecturer in entrepreneurship and innovation, Julian Waters-Lynch, has researched trends for employees who have moved to regional and remote parts of Australia.

Dr Waters-Lynch said about 10 per cent of the Australian workforce was working completely remote.

"They tend to be in two classes," he said.

"They are either high-end knowledge workers, people that work in software design, or coding or design.

"Or these kinds of admin work: IT support, payroll, other admin functions."

A 2022 report authored by Dr Waters-Lynch found that employees with fully remote working arrangements could consider a much wider geographical area and were less dependent on regional public transport.

Dr Waters-Lynch said there were companies that encouraged fully remote work, including tech companies Atlassian and Automattic.

"Their argument is if you're fully remote [then] you don't have to pay for any real estate costs, which is significant," he said.

He said, productively, it helped them as well for two main reasons.

"They are not limited to simply hiring in the geographic area that [the company] is based. They can hire anyone anywhere in the world," Dr Waters-Lynch said.

"The second reason is they can structure their workforce to be working following the different time zones.

"You can design like a sort of 24/7 organisation."

Who is alexander mashkevitch.

Mashkevich was born in Frunze, Kyrgyz SSR, Soviet Union, in 1954. His father Anton, a doctor born in Lithuania, and his mother, Rakhel Yoffe, a lawyer born in Vitebsk, were evacuated to Kyrgyzstan in 1941. His family background is Lithuanian Jewish.

He is a graduate of Kyrgyz State University where he studied philology. Mashkevich started out an academic career but became a businessman during perestroika. Mashkevich, Patokh Chodiev, and Alijan Ibragimov form “the Trio,” a group of Kazakh businessmen who became billionaires. The Trio gained control of the recently privatized chromium, alumina, and gas operations in Kazakhstan (some of the largest ones in the world).

Mashkevich is one of the owners of Alferon Management. Based in London, Alferon Management has acquired mining operations in different places: Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, Kosovo, Russia, and other countries.

In 2010 he was on the Forbes list of billionaires at #287. In 2017, he was on the list at #1098, with a worth of $1.9 billions. Now his worth is 3 billion dollars.

She has accommodations for 18 guests and 19 crew members on board. The VIP suites have fold-down balconies that add to the grandeur.

The onboard atmosphere is bright and inviting with subtle finishes. The entertainment areas are open to provide more sheltered and intimate formal spaces.

The yacht has an extensive health and beauty center with a spa and an expansive beach club.

The beach club creates the perfect area for guests to enjoy indoor/outdoor living. There is also a swimming platform where guests can leap into the water below.

She has an on-deck jacuzzi to soak up the bubbles and the views. The yacht also has an elevator for convenient access to her different decks and a comprehensive gym onboard. The tender garage is brimming with towable toys and tenders.

Reymond Langton Design also contributed to the exterior design of the LADY LARA yacht. She was built by Lürssen and delivered from their Rendsburg shipyard in 2015. The exterior has sweeping curves and elegant but masculine features.

LADY LARA was code-named project Orchid when she was launched from the Lürssen Shipyard in 2015 and later renamed. She has a full displacement hull which gives her exceptional speeds in the water.

She has a white aluminum superstructure and teak decks throughout. The exterior is accented by underwater lights, which illuminate her at the night.

The LADY LARA yacht is a 91m superyacht with a beam of 14.82m and a draft of 4m. The vessel reaches a maximum speed of 18 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots.

She is powered by 2 MTU engines and has a displacement of 2,945 gross tons.

She features an advanced stabilization system that provides guests with the best comfort levels on board by minimizing the rolling motion of the vessel. The $180 million yacht has a $14 – $15 million annual running cost.

She is an award-winning yacht that holds an award from the Asia Boating competition in 2016. LADY LARA has a Lloyd’s Register classification.

A $1.4 Million-Per-Week Yacht Charter Experience

Y.CO has just welcomed the 298-foot Lürssen Lady Lara to the charter fleet. The lowest weekly base rate is $1.4 million for bookings this winter in the Caribbean and Bahamas.

The yacht is also listed for sale—at more than $254 million—for the first time since the German shipyard delivered it in 2015. Y.CO’s Max Bulley and Gary Wright, along with Merle Wood of Merle Wood & Associates, represented the yacht at the recent Monaco Yacht Show.

“With Lürssen quality and stunning Reymond Langton design, Lady Lara is an exceptional yacht that was conceived with family living in mind,” Wright stated in a press release. “Her adaptable spaces, variety and flexibility, in addition to all the amazing features like the breathtaking spa area, the beach club and two pools, are ideal for multigenerational groups and put Lady Lara into a league of her own.”

Accommodations are for 12 guests in their choice of eight staterooms (for private use, the yacht is built to accommodate 16 guests). Six of the guest staterooms are on the main deck, with one on the lower deck. The master suite has its own private deck with an exterior terrace, outdoor hot tub, and indoor library. The aft-deck space in the owner’s area is called a “winter garden,” with sliding glass panels that can be closed to shelter diners from the elements.

There also are two cabins for owner’s staff or supernumeraries, in addition to the yacht’s quarters for 27 crew.

Onboard amenities include an aft-deck pool whose floor can be raised to create a dance floor. A sound system on this deck helps to create a discotheque-style environment for parties. There’s another pool up on the sundeck, this one with a swim-up bar.

On the bridge deck, guests have access to the spa, which includes a hammam, massage room, treatment room, beauty salon and gymnasium. Guests who prefer to get their exercise outdoors can do so from the beach club at water level, which has a steam room and a sauna along with a sunbathing area.

For rainy days and relaxing nights, the lower deck aboard Lady Lara includes a cinema. There’s also a touch-and-go helipad on board, if guests want to escape to a different spot up the coast.

How fast can Lady Lara cruise? According to Y.CO, the yacht has a top speed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots, which is plenty fast for exploring the islands.

Russia's Nuclear Deterrent Command Center Imperiled by Winter Freeze—Report

A Russian nuclear deterrent command center in Moscow has been imperiled by power outages that have impacted more than one-quarter of the region's cities amid freezing temperatures, a Russian Telegram channel has reported.

The VChK-OGPU outlet, which purports to have inside information from Russian security forces, reported that the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings—part of the Russian Space Forces, a branch of the country's Aerospace Forces—near Solnechnogorsk in Moscow is without power.

It serves as the space forces early warning network against potential ballistic missile attacks.

The development comes as Russians are reported to be suffering from power outages in their homes in the Moscow region caused by technical issues at plants amid subzero temperatures.

On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is about 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes.

Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov and Naro-Fominsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.

Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky and Selyatino are also without power.

The Telegram channel said that at the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings, "the crew...is on duty around the clock."

"It is here that the decision on a retaliatory nuclear strike is executed," the channel said.

Newsweek could not independently verify the report and has reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry by email for comment.

Power outages have also been reported in Russia's second-largest city, St. Petersburg, in the country's western Voronezh region, in the southwest city of Volgograd, and in Rostov, which borders Ukraine, a country that Russia has been at war with since February 24, 2022.

On Sunday, two shopping malls in St. Petersburg were forced to close because of problems with light and heating, reported local news outlet 78.ru. Hundreds of other homes in the city have had no electricity, water or heating for days amid temperatures of -25 C (-13 F).

Russian authorities have also been forced to compensate passengers of a train that ran from Samara to St. Petersburg (a 20-hour journey) without heating during -30 C (-22 F) temperatures. Videos circulating on social media showed carriage windows frozen over. A passenger also said the toilet didn't work during the trip because of frozen pipes.
