Urban Soundtracks: Rostov-on-Don According to Motorama

For reasons unknown to me, Russian music has never broken into the Western consciousness, beyond that brief t.A T.u phase in the 2000’s. Americans just never caught on to the wonder that is Philipp Kirkorov, I suppose. Nonetheless,  Motorama has carved out a small niche for themselves as an underground hit. Maybe this is down to their lyrics being in English, or perhaps it’s the fact that they have a near-perfect capacity to summarize our twisted emotional landscape with their own brand of Post Punk.

Hailing from Rostov, Russia, they were formed outside the Moscow and Saint Petersburg cultural centers, which produce the bulk of the nation’s cultural exports. Known for being a far more rough city, Rostov appears to be the ideal backdrop for Motorama’s amazing capacity to engender emotions, like disappointment and anxiety. However, little writing is produced about the city and it attracts few tourists from outside Russia. As such, we spoke to  Vladislav Parshin from the band, and he kindly put together a bit of a mix to understand the place a bit more.

For most people anything outside of Russia, the country is a complete mystery. How did being from Rostov shape your musical tastes and you guys as artists?

For me the main influence was my father who showed me tons of great music from the Soviet Union and abroad and all these songs formed my tastes. Rostov-on-Don is also an important part of shaping the taste, as I knew personally the members of the New Wave/Post-Punk 90’s bands like Elen  and Matrosskaya Tishina , they influenced me in the beginning of the 2000’s.

It is interesting looking at musical scenes that are outside the centers of arts like Manchester, Seattle, and Louisville. It is as if being removed from the mainstream conversation allows you to produce something completely unique and personal. To a certain degree, do you think that your band was almost blessed to be outside the major cities of mainstream culture?

I won’t say that it was a blessing, but it was fine for us as a band. I think that living outside the big cultural spots is a good chance for creating something by yourself, you have more free time, instead of visiting never ending exhibitions, concerts and parties. But at the same time it’s harder to meet people who share the same ideas and who can help you in what you are doing. In general I feel comfortable living in Rostov-on-Don, we are flying to Moscow and St. Petersburg from time to time only because of the concerts.

The mix is fantastic. It is very Post Punk/synth-inspired. However, it is hardly the most ‘sunshine and rainbows’ mix. You’ve said in other interviews that there is nothing exciting about your home city of Rostov. Does that contribute to the sound of the mix?

I like such music and I think it suits our city.

In many articles, your work has been compared to British post-punk bands but I think it is fair to say that you’re part of a broader Soviet/post-Soviet tradition of bands like Kino. What is it about this darker style of music that continues to attract people across different generations in the former USSR?

I think that there’s a specific side in Russian character that is connected with such dark or sorrowful music. For example, lots of traditional folk songs from different parts of Russia are based on metaphysical stories connected with faith and death. All these existential problems are reflected in different art genres here, not only with music, but also literature.

• The employee said Ajay Thakore mooned and threw cash at him after being told he couldn't use the dock.
• Thakore, the CEO of Doctor Multimedia, issued an apology through his public relations team.

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee after being told he couldn't be there, the San Diego-based broadcaster CBS8 reported on March 11.

Joseph Holt, a 21-year-old employee at Marriot Marina in San Diego, told CBS8 that he spotted the yacht sailing into the private dock. The owner, whom CBS8 identified as Ajay Thakore, tried to pick another person up at the dock, Holt said.

"I told him respectfully that he couldn't be there, and I honestly was hoping to have a conversation with him about his cool boat," Holt told CBS8.

In a YouTube video posted by @SM-wc9eq on March 10, a dark blue Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 is seen sailing out of a dock. A man in a gray T-shirt, a pair of jeans, and a cap was shown standing on the yacht. The man appeared to be Thakore, per CBS8.

Thakore was shown shouting at Holt. "I will kill you, you know I will kill you!" he can be heard saying multiple times in the video

Thakore was later shown pounding his fist on his palm and pointing his thumb down before telling Holt: "To your face!" Holt was shown responding by pointing his middle finger at Thakore.

"I really was trying to restrain myself from getting fired from my job or stepping out of line. The only thing I did was give him the bird," Holt told CBS8.

Holt said Thakore then took $100 bills from his wallet and threw them at him. He added that Thakore mooned him. This exchange was not shown in the video.

"He was saying I'm nobody, I'm nothing, I work a silly job. He said that he knows people, he has connections, he can change my life and ruin it," Holt said. Holt did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

The San Diego Harbor Police arrived at the marina 10 minutes after Thakore's yacht exited the dock, per CBS8.

The Harbor Police told Business Insider that Holt decided to press charges against Thakore and that they are investigating the incident.

According to Thakore's LinkedIn page , he's the CEO of Doctor Multimedia. The company's website shows that it's a healthcare marketing firm based in San Diego. Thakore appears to go by the name Ace Rogers on Instagram and TikTok, where he's noted as being a professional gambler.

Thakore, through his public relations team, told CBS8 in a statement that his altercation with Holt was "regrettable."

"What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange," the statement said. Thakore did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

Thakore isn't the only CEO who's been called out for threatening another person. In November 2021, an Activision spokesperson told BI that its ex-CEO Bobby Kotick had previously apologized for telling his assistant he would have her killed. The spokesperson added that Kotick's threat was "obviously hyperbolic and inappropriate" and that "he deeply regrets the exaggeration and tone."

In June 2020, Lisa Alexander, the CEO of LaFace Skincare, a cosmetics company, apologized in a statement to the media after she had threatened to call the police on her neighbor for writing "Black Lives Matter" on his property. Alexander said in the apology that she was "disrespectful" and "should have minded my own business."

There's also a seducing house, just on the shore where an artist and his mother made a little enamel museum upstairs and arranged half of the basement in a cozy apartment for people.

After eating a nice bliny (pancakes), seeping a sweet home-made medovukha (honey alcohol), you might feel like the people you meet: smiley and relaxed. Here they seem to have nothing to fight against, they have nature very close, and they can easily get out of their village, with any direct train to Moscow. So Rostov is a nice green town made out of old white stones very close to a deep blue lake.

Homes of Sean 'Diddy' Combs searched by federal officials, sources say

LOS ANGELES — Sean "Diddy" Combs is a subject of a federal investigation amid a wave of lawsuits that have been filed against the rap music mogul since November , a source familiar with the matter told NBC News on Monday.

Three women and a man have been interviewed by federal officials in Manhattan in relation to allegations of sex trafficking, sexual assault, and the solicitation and distribution of illegal narcotics and firearms, the source said. Interviews with three other subjects are also scheduled, the source said.

Four law enforcement sources told NBC News that federal agents with Homeland Security Investigations on Monday executed search warrants at Los Angeles and Miami properties belonging to Combs. The sources said the warrant is out of the Southern District of New York.

HSI confirmed in a statement that it "executed law enforcement actions" in New York as part of an ongoing investigation, along with teams in Los Angeles and Miami.

Homeland Security officials seized phones from Combs in Miami before he was scheduled to depart for a trip to the Bahamas, according to three law enforcement sources familiar with the warrant. Combs was in the Miami area when authorities executed the searches, sources said. It is not clear if Combs made the trip as planned.

Representatives for Combs, 54, did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for comment Monday.

Series of allegations, lawsuits

News of a federal investigation comes after public scrutiny of Combs’ behavior after his former romantic partner, Cassie, accused him of physically and sexually abusing her for years. She made the allegations in a lawsuit filed late last year in New York under the New York Adult Survivors Act, which offered a one-year window for adult victims of sexual assault to come forward with civil claims regardless of the statute of limitations. 

Cassie, whose full name is Casandra Ventura, settled with Combs on Nov. 17, the day after the suit was filed on terms that have not been disclosed. 

Since then, three other women have come forward with lawsuits in the Southern District of New York alleging that they were sexually assaulted by Combs . Two of the women said they were teenagers at the time of the alleged assaults. 

Douglas Wigdor, who represents Ventura and a Jane Doe who filed suit, said in a statement that the searches and investigation were hopefully the beginning of a process that “will hold Mr. Combs responsible for his depraved conduct.” 

“We will always support law enforcement when it seeks to prosecute those that have violated the law,” Wigdor said.  

An attorney for Joi Dickerson-Neal, one of Combs' accusers, declined to comment to NBC News.

Combs has denied each of the sexual assault allegations, calling them “sickening.” 

A producer who worked for Combs between September 2022 and November 2023 filed a lawsuit in February alleging that Combs sexually harassed, drugged and threatened him for more than a year. The former employee, Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones, also alleged that he had video and audio evidence of Combs, his staff and others “engaging in serious illegal activity.”

Jones' attorney, Tyrone Blackburn, also represents Combs' accuser Liza Gardner. Blackburn said Monday that the federal investigation will not "prevent nor delay my clients’ pending and forthcoming actions for justice and resolution from the Combs RICO Enterprise.”

Shawn Holley, an attorney for Combs, previously denied Jones’ allegations and said that Combs’ team has “overwhelming, indisputable proof that his claims are complete lies.” 

One person who said he frequents the Los Angeles neighborhood where a search happened expressed shock.

Ryan Mendelsohn, 20, who used to live in the area and still regularly visits a nearby friend, told reporters he would see parties at the home and women outside. Other homes had parties, too, but that home had people there and women outside until 6 a.m., which was not usual, he said.

“I drive by a lot, and I see that — a lot of girls, maybe five or six girls outside, some leaving, some not, some going in,” adding he also saw Black Chevy Suburban SUVs there.

“I never thought anything of it,” said Mendelsohn, who said he did not know Combs lived there until Monday’s news coverage. “But now, it’s crazy.”

Weapons charge

Combs has had a number of legal issues in the past , but has rarely faced criminal charges. 

In 1999, Combs pleaded guilty to assaulting a record executive and was ordered to one day of anger management. That same year, Combs was accused of criminal possession of a weapon after a shooting at a New York nightclub. 

Witnesses told law enforcement that they saw Combs with a firearm at the club and that rapper Shyne, real name Moses Barrow fired into the crowd. Combs was pulled over by police in a vehicle with then-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez, and a gun was found in the car. Combs was acquitted of weapons and bribery charges, and Shyne was found guilty of the club shooting at trial. 

Since Ventura's suit and others have come forward accusing Combs of assault, the music mogul has been the center of scrutiny. He stepped down from his position as chairman of media network Revolt and Hulu pulled back from a planned reality series centered on his family.

Andrei Chikatilo, The Butcher of Rostov: Biography and Murders

Andréi Chikatilo , Known as the butcher of Rostov (October 16, 1936, Yabluchne, Ukraine-February 14, 1994, Novocherkask, Russia), was a serial killer of the Soviet Union. Considered to be the bloodiest psychopath in Eastern Europe, he confessed to killing 52 people, most of them children and adolescents.

He was nicknamed as the butcher of Rostov, Rostov's ripper and the red ripper, since in addition to murdering his victims, he used to mutilate them in different ways after beating and sexually assaulting them.

The criminal was active from 1978 to 1990 when he was finally captured. It committed its crimes in Russia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan in the time in which these countries formed part of the Soviet Union.

During the years in which it committed its misdeeds it took a double life, since it appeared to be a man of family and very educated. What few knew was that behind his seemingly gentle personality was a complete monster.

Family life of Andréi Chikatilo

Andréi Románovich Chikatilo was born on October 16, 1936 in a Ukrainian village called Yáblochnoye. His parents were Roman and Anna Chikatilo. It was born in the time of the Holodomor, also known as the Genocide or Holoscausto Ukrainian.

In those years the process of collectivization took place by the Soviet Union and the father of Andréi became a prisoner of war of the Nazis.

Andréi's mother had to take care of him and his 7-year-old little sister, without the help of anyone. Many things are said about her upbringing, one of which is that her mother used to tell a terrible story to her children that she would be forever traumatized.

According to this story someone had kidnapped the elder brother named Stepán to eat it. But although the story seems to have been a story to scare children, in reality that was not a strange situation at the time.

In the Ukraine of those years the famine invaded the streets and the dead were everywhere. In fact, as a child Andrei used to see numerous carcasses, since people were forced to eat human flesh to survive.

However, it is worth mentioning that the brother's story was never confirmed, since there was no document certifying the birth or death of Stepan.

Despite the problems that beset him, Andrei tried to lead a life like that of all children of his age. The problem is that he did not do too well in school, not because of the studies but because of the coexistence with his peers.

He had an introverted personality and did not seem to have too much character. He was marginalized and humiliated by his companions.

In addition to this, I used to have other physical problems. He suffered from myopia, but it took years to accept his condition. In fact it is said that he used his first glasses at the age of thirty. He also suffered from Nocturnal enuresis (Bed wetting) until age 12.

As he grew older he became much more timid, especially with women. From a very young age he was frustrated in the sexual realm. In adolescence it had a love affair with a girl of the town, but this one was truncated due to its problems of impotence.

After finishing school, Andrei rendered military service for the Soviet army. There he decided to dedicate himself to the studies, reason why it prepared for several titles, among them engineering, Russian Literature and the denominated"Marxism-Leninism". After completing his studies, he became an active communist.

In 1963 Andréi married a woman named Fayinay and despite their sexual problems the couple had two children. Although he could not maintain an erection, he could ejaculate.

Chikatilo used to think of himself as a mistake of nature, someone to whom life had punished castration since birth. He was described as a hard-working, loving, stable and even submissive husband. As a father he never raised his voice in front of his children and he also became a respected member of the Communist Party.

In 1971 he entered the world of teaching. Taking advantage of how well he had gone in professional studies, he decided to become a teacher. It was from that time on that he began to obsess over the minors.

She felt a growing attraction for girls under twelve, so she began to spy on them. He used to walk around the dorms to see them in his underwear and while he was watching them he masturbated with his hand in his pocket.

But little by little his life as professor began to seem more and more to his time in the school. His pupils did not respect him, refused to behave well, and constantly mocked him. They used to call it"the goose"because it supposedly had very long shoulders and had certain curvatures, besides a long neck.

The aggressions became so many and he was so afraid that he began to carry a knife to the classes. He never got to use it and finally years later he was fired because some students accused him of sexual harassment.

The Crimes of Chikatilo

First victim

Chikatilo committed his first crime in December of 1978; Was 42 when she decided to address a 9-year-old girl on the street. Her name was Yelena Zakotnova and convinced her to accompany him to a cabin on the outskirts of the city.

His years as a teacher and as a father had taught him to talk to children, so he could easily manage to take her voluntarily.

Once in the cabin, the psychopath Undressed her and because of the violence with which she did it, caused a scratch. When the blood sprouted, he had an immediate erection. That situation of excitement caused him to associate sex with blood. And so the monster that had been in his head for years began to come out.

He stabbed her with a knife until she orgasmed and ejaculated. In this way he realized that he had found a way to satisfy his sexual needs.

The corpse was found days later on the Grushovka River. Although Chikatilo was questioned by the authorities, the main suspect was another sex offender named Aleksandr Krávchenko.

Second victim

His second mortal victim did not come until three years later. After losing his job as a teacher, in 1981 he began working as a factory procurement officer. Employment made him travel constantly throughout the region, which helped him to find victims in different places.

On September 3 of that year she attacked Larisa Tkachenko, a 17-year-old prostitute. His goal was to have sex with the girl, however, when he could not have an erection, the girl made fun of him.

This made him so angry that he lost control and killed her savagely. After strangling her, she ejaculated on his corpse, bit her throat, cut her breasts and even ate her nipples.

With that other murder, Chikatilo understood that doing that represented the ultimate sexual act for him. That was the biggest source of excitement he could get. After that, little by little more and more victims would be added.

Third victim

The third was Lyuba Biryuk, a 13-year-old girl who was kidnapped from a village called Novorcherkassk. He stabbed her about 40 times and mutilated her eyes. Later this act became his personal seal.

Fourth victim

Until that time, Chikatilo had only murdered women. Oleg Podzhiváev would be his first male victim, a 9-year-old boy.

The little body was never found. However, Chikatilo assured that he was responsible for his death and claimed to have ripped off his genitals.

The killer's modus operandi was always the same; The victims were found in the forests, had signs of violence, sadism and had generally been mutilated. They were all girls, boys and young girls.

Detention and execution

By 1984, the number of victims was already 15. The case of this Serial killer Had become a public case.

In order to try to find the murderer, the Serbsky Institute of Moscow made its profile. According to the experts it was a man who was completely normal, probably married and had a job. He used to leave his semen in the body of the victims and after an analysis determined that his blood was of the AB group.

In September 1984 Chikatilo was arrested at the Rostov market. The man fit perfectly into the profile of the murderer. However, after a medical test, it was determined that his blood type did not match that of the semen found.

Thus Chikatilo was released without any charge against him and the murders continued. The number of victims had already reached 30 and the authorities still had no clues.

In October 1990 another body was found in a forest near Donlesjoz station. The entire police team turned to the case and had a riot force of about 100 men. Two weeks later another corpse was found and the police figure in the investigation amounted to 600. They had set up a guard in the woods, especially in the most isolated areas.

By that time, the end of Chikatilo was near. In November, while one of these guards was making a detective named Igor Rybakov, he saw a man come out of the woods.

He wore a suit and tie, had a bandaged finger and a cheek stained with blood. The officer asked for the documentation but since he did not have enough reasons to arrest him, he let him go. However, he made a report of the incident.

The next day the authorities found the corpse of a young woman in the same area. The officers tied up the rope and deduced that the man responsible must have been the man the detective had reported. Thus, on November 20, an arrest warrant was issued against Andrei Chikatilo. Curiously, his blood was not AB type, but his sperm.

After his arrest, the defendant denied involvement. He did not confess anything during the first interrogations and accused the police of chasing him. Nevertheless, a few days later he assured that he would count everything if they stopped the interrogations. When meeting with one of the psychiatrists ended up confessing 52 murders.

He later wrote a letter to the Attorney General stating some details of his life. He asserted that he was in a state of Deep depression And acknowledged having"disturbing sexual urges".

Justified acts committed because of a psychiatric problem; Said that his problems were mental and that he could not control his actions. However, for the police the purpose of this statement was to seek a way out of their situation, claiming a mental illness.

Death penalty

Serbsky Institute psychiatrists, who had outlined him years earlier, labeled him a prudent sadist. They indicated that he did not suffer any mental disorder that prevented him from understanding that his actions were not correct.

It was determined that his actions were premeditated and that he was legally sane. His trial began in April 1992 and ended in October of that year. He was sentenced to death. The 14 of February of 1994 was executed of a shot in the nape in the prison of Rostov of the Don.

Psychological profile

According to the experts who outlined it, Chikatilo was an ordinary man, solitary and gentle. However, he was really a sexual psychopath with sadistic impulses, who also practiced cannibalism.

Although he was carried away by the compulsion to kill, he was neither mentally retarded nor suffering schizophrenia . Evidence of this was his ability to plan his attacks.
