The Bay Head Yacht Club was established in 1888 in Bay Head, New Jersey. BHYC members were active participants in early sneakbox and catboat racing on the shallow waters of Barnegat Bay. In 1914 the club was a founding member of the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association. That summer a BHYC sailor won the first BBYRA championship. Since then Bay Head sailors have won 175 championship flags in classes ranging from E Scows to Barnegat Bay’s splendid wooden A Cats.

Today the Bay Head Yacht Club has a vibrant membership of 850 families that enjoy active sailing programs.  The Club is proud to continue its leadership in the sport of sailing. The Club is located at the northern terminus of Barnegat Bay in New Jersey where several sailing Olympians and world champions have competed.

“Bay Head Yacht Club is proud to support the National Sailing Hall of Fame as a Founding Member. For over 120 years this sort of leadership has been central to the mission of our Club,” said Commodore Austin T. Fragomen.

The Bay Head Yacht Club was established on September 8, 1888 “to promote yachting and rowing and to foster athletic sports upon the water”. Bay Head was then emerging as a popular seaside resort that attracted prominent families from Philadelphia and New York. The first clubhouse was built in 1889 on pilings at the head of Barnegat Bay. The modest building was surrounded by marshes and reached from land by boardwalks. In 1893 the clubhouse was moved 100 yards east to its present location and in 1928 the current clubhouse was built to accommodate a growing membership.

BHYC members were active participants in early sneakbox and catboat racing on the shallow waters of Barnegat Bay. In 1914 the Club was a founding member of the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association. Bay Head Commodore John V.A. Cattus was elected the BBYRA’s first commodore. That summer O.G. Dale of BHYC won the first BBYRA championship in his 20’ Sneakbox “Arran”. Since then BHYC sailors have won 175 championships in classes ranging from E Scows to Barnegat Bay’s splendid wooden A Cats.

Bay Head has had many prominent sailors in its history including Slade Dale, winner of the Cruising Club of America’s Blue Water Medal for 1929 for a cruise to Cuba and back in “Postscript”, a 23’ cutter designed by Dale himself. Also Sam Merrick, champion E Scow sailor, who managed the U.S. Olympic Sailing Team to its best showing ever: an unprecedented three gold and two silver medals in 1984. Sam was honored later that year with US Sailing’s most prestigious award, The Nathanael Herreshoff Trophy.

BHYC's campus is a "key site" in Bay Head's historic district. It includes two buildings separately listed on the National Register as "contributing structures" within the historic district: our clubhouse and the boat shed, formerly known as Dale's Yacht Basin, on Lake Avenue. Our facilities suffered significant damage during Superstorm Sandy. We have completed repairs on everything but the clubhouse. Plans for its restoration are underway and we hope to re-open the clubhouse in 2014.

Northern New Jersey: Garden State Parkway South to Exit 98. Bear left after tollbooth heading toward Route 34 South-Point Pleasant. Follow Route 34 South through circle. Within 4-5 miles Route 34 South becomes Route 35 South. Follow Route 35 South through Point Pleasant Beach. After crossing over the Railroad Tracks proceed South on Route 35 to the 3rd traffic light, Bridge Avenue. Turn right at this light onto Bridge Avenue. Proceed straight, through next traffic light (Lake Avenue) and at the next street, Club Drive, make a left. At the end of Club Drive turn right. Parking lot is at the end of the Tennis Courts. Southern New Jersey: Garden State Parkway North to Exit 90. Exit to the right and turn onto Chambersbridge Road. At the 4th traffic light, turn left onto Route 70. Staying in the right lane, continue on Route 70 to the 2nd traffic light and follow signs for Route 88. Stay on Route 88 through 4 traffic lights. At the 5th traffic light turn right onto Bridge Avenue. Continue on Bridge Avenue through 4 traffic lights. After the 4th traffic light continue to the 3rd street, turn right onto Club Drive. At the end of Club Drive turn right. Parking Lot is at the end of the Tennis Courts. Western New Jersey: New Jersey Turnpike to Exit 7A, Interstate 195 East. Interstate 195 East approximately 30 miles to Route 34 South-Brielle/Point Pleasant. Follow Route 34 South through circle. Within 4-5 miles Route 34 South becomes Route 35 South. Follow Route 35 South through Point Pleasant Beach. After crossing over the Railroad Tracks proceed South on Route 35 to the 3rd traffic light, Bridge Avenue. The Bay Head Yacht Club is a NJ Wedding Venue located in Bay Head, NJ. The club is exclusive, and only holds weddings for members or member-sponsored guests. If you’re lucky enough to be or know a member, you’ll have the opportunity to get married at one of our very favorite NJ Wedding Venues. Ceremonies are held at the boat house and culminate in a wonderful getaway on a boat. Portraits can be taken on the docks or right on the boat as you enjoy champagne and hors d’oeuvres on the Barnegat Bay. Receptions are held in the club house in a unique setting that your guests will love.

A Classic Fall Beach Wedding at Bay Head Yacht Club

Nina and Megan had the honor of documenting Sarah and Bob’s classic Fall beach wedding at Bay Head Yacht Club. The day was filled with love, emotions, and tons of smiles. It was a bright and sunny Fall day at the Jersey Shore, a perfect day to get married.

Why They Picked Bay Head to Get Married

Sarah grew up in Bay Head, NJ even living for 10 summers on a boat docked at this very yacht club. Her parents now live across the street. They were married in Bay Head on the same weekend in October 26 years prior. Her late grandparents made their family home here in the 1970s, and everyone in town knew Dick and Nancy and their entertainment. Therefore, Bayhead yacht club was the obvious choice for their event.

How They Met 

From the Bride : “We met at Princeton in the Army ROTC program in the first week of Sarah’s freshman year.  We later learned that we had attended rival high schools (The Hill School and The Lawrenceville School). We started officially dating just two months before Bob deployed to Iraq with the 82nd Airborne. Together we have done 3 years of long distance, two combat deployments, and 7 respective moves together. Bob is getting out of the army the week of our wedding, and we will be starting married life (and short distance dating!) in the Upper West Side of NYC.”

The Details 

We really loved the color pallet of this wedding and think that Flowers by Melinda did an absolutely fantastic job of putting it all together.

From The Bride:

“Our design vision is to have a classic but not stuffy black tie wedding with a coastal elegant aesthetic. We drew inspiration from vintage boathouses and wanted our wedding to have an Old World touch.  We used dark greens, blues, gold, brass and silver— because that’s what color the beach is in the fall. We wanted to have an OUTSTANDING band (Bob is an unreal dancer), an open bar, and all our favorite people.”

Personal Touches

There were a lot of personal touches at their wedding. A special touch that we loved was Sarah’s necklace, a 1927 vintage piece from her late paternal grandmother. We also thought Sarah looked adorable in Bob’s army shirt during bridal prep! 

The Ceremony 

Sarah and Bob are devout Christians and wanted their faith in God to be central throughout the day. Therefore,  getting married in a church was a must. Sarah and the wedding party traveled to the church in a trolley and when they arrived Sarah shared a special moment outside with her dad before heading down the aisle. Bob’s face when he saw his bride for the first time was priceless. 

The Wedding Portraits

Post ceremony Nina photographed the couple around the Bay Head Yacht club grounds. They had the most perfect fall light that made for truly gorgeous images.  You can feel their joy through their  huge smiles and really feel see chemistry. And how amazing are all of Sarah’s twirls ?!!!

A Unique Entrance on a Boat

One of the perks to hosting your wedding at Bay Head Yacht Club is the one of a kind unique way to enter your reception. After their ceremony Sarah + Bob ( and Nina) hopped onto a boat and took a private cruise to their reception. They got to enjoy a glass of celebratory champagne and spend some alone time together. They arrived at the dock with all of their guests watching and cheering them on. 

The Reception

Dancing was on the top of their wedding priority list and Brian Kirk and The Jerks trough one heck of a party. The night ended with Bob singing to Sarah with the band. How sweet!

SBI’s Advisory and Technical solutions launched the successful restoration of the Bay Head Yacht Club and returned this historic resort to its vital role in the seaside community.

Built in the early 1920’s, the Bay Head Yacht Club is a historic landmark and center for seaside activities on Barnegat Bay in Bay Head, New Jersey. Originally constructed on wood pilings at the water’s edge, the clubhouse and its foundation had reached the point of failure after years of rising sea levels and the disastrous effects of Hurricane Sandy. SBI Consultants provided technical and advisory solutions to the Bay Head Yacht Club for a major rehabilitation of the clubhouse that involved raising, rebuilding and restoring the 100 year old structure. This challenging project consisted of elevating the clubhouse by 11-feet to minimize damage from future storm floods and renovating the entire building while preserving its charm and rich traditions. Working closely with the Project team, SBI delivered essential project and risk management strategies throughout the life cycle of the project. These services were particularly crucial when Hurricane Sandy struck during the design phase, which resulted in continuous revisions of the project’s planning criteria to meet the rapidly changing FEMA criteria. SBI also provided effective scheduling strategies to ensure that key construction goals were reached during the summer that the clubhouse was closed to its members. In a series of carefully orchestrated maneuvers, the clubhouse was raised off its deteriorating wood pilings and transported to dry land while more than 100 new steel and concrete pilings were driven to a depth of 60’ in Barnegat Bay. The top of the new pilings—now 11’ above the mean water level—were connected by a filigree system with beams up to 3’ deep and a concrete slab covering over 10,000 square feet. Once resettled on its new foundation, the clubhouse stood a full story higher than it was before. The renovation of the clubhouse included construction of a new 2-story kitchen wing, offices, a bar and a dining room, as well as full restoration of the wrap-around terraces, historic facades and refurbishing of the interior. SBI’s essential project management, risk management and scheduling services enabled the Bay Head Yacht Club to accomplish its goal of building a high quality clubhouse that retained its original charm and traditions within budget and on schedule, returning this seaside resort to its vital role in the community.

The Bay Head Yacht Club was established in 1888 in Bay Head, New Jersey. BHYC members were active participants in early sneakbox and catboat racing on the shallow waters of Barnegat Bay. In 1914 the club was a founding member of the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association. That summer a BHYC sailor won the first BBYRA championship. Since then Bay Head sailors have won 175 championship flags in classes ranging from E Scows to Barnegat Bay’s splendid wooden A Cats.

Today the Bay Head Yacht Club has a vibrant membership of 850 families that enjoy active sailing programs.  The Club is proud to continue its leadership in the sport of sailing. The Club is located at the northern terminus of Barnegat Bay in New Jersey where several sailing Olympians and world champions have competed.

“Bay Head Yacht Club is proud to support the National Sailing Hall of Fame as a Founding Member. For over 120 years this sort of leadership has been central to the mission of our Club,” said Commodore Austin T. Fragomen.

The Bay Head Yacht Club was established on September 8, 1888 “to promote yachting and rowing and to foster athletic sports upon the water”. Bay Head was then emerging as a popular seaside resort that attracted prominent families from Philadelphia and New York. The first clubhouse was built in 1889 on pilings at the head of Barnegat Bay. The modest building was surrounded by marshes and reached from land by boardwalks. In 1893 the clubhouse was moved 100 yards east to its present location and in 1928 the current clubhouse was built to accommodate a growing membership.

BHYC members were active participants in early sneakbox and catboat racing on the shallow waters of Barnegat Bay. In 1914 the Club was a founding member of the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association. Bay Head Commodore John V.A. Cattus was elected the BBYRA’s first commodore. That summer O.G. Dale of BHYC won the first BBYRA championship in his 20’ Sneakbox “Arran”. Since then BHYC sailors have won 175 championships in classes ranging from E Scows to Barnegat Bay’s splendid wooden A Cats.

Bay Head has had many prominent sailors in its history including Slade Dale, winner of the Cruising Club of America’s Blue Water Medal for 1929 for a cruise to Cuba and back in “Postscript”, a 23’ cutter designed by Dale himself. Also Sam Merrick, champion E Scow sailor, who managed the U.S. Olympic Sailing Team to its best showing ever: an unprecedented three gold and two silver medals in 1984. Sam was honored later that year with US Sailing’s most prestigious award, The Nathanael Herreshoff Trophy.

BHYC’s campus is a “key site” in Bay Head’s historic district. It includes two buildings separately listed on the National Register as “contributing structures” within the historic district: our clubhouse and the boat shed, formerly known as Dale’s Yacht Basin, on Lake Avenue. Our facilities suffered significant damage during Superstorm Sandy. We have completed repairs on everything but the clubhouse. Plans for its restoration are underway and we hope to re-open the clubhouse in 2014.
