So I bought a RC RG65, an BG Electronica, and have been using it to learn RC sailing. I've also caught the RC Foiling bug, though. I watched a few SailGP races, (Absolutely brilliant, by the way), and was thinking, would it be possible to build a giant-scale, 10ft long RC AC50 wingsail catamaran?

Sure, this guy is still working on his version: Ac-86 build - RC Groups https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?1887900-Ac-86-build However, to do it right(so that it works) you'll have a lot of studying to do. Read the above thread all the way thru. Be sure to give A LOT of consideration to the practical aspects of such a large model-transport, stowage, rescue from capsize, depth of water to fly in, sailing location not polluted with weeds, COST, radio channels, servo systems capable of retracting and deploying a loaded foil quickly(1-1.5 seconds), foil system(altitude control-recommend wand controlled T-foils or UptiP foils instead of a scale system for simplicity of operation), wing design, battery weight and type( recommend litium iron(LiFE), battery chargers, sailmaker for jib, hull tooling, etc. I may be able to answer a few questions not covered in the thread. This will be a HUGE job both in time, effort, cost and study and PATIENCE. Good Luck and be sure to learn and have fun! Look around on RC Groups Sailboats forum(above) and the German RC Multihulls forum: Multihulls http://www.rc-network.de/forum/forumdisplay.php/166-Mini-40 ====================== Altitude Control: See posts 14 and 15 in the RC Groups thread--I wrote both of them and they give you an overview of using wand controlled foils which are VASTLY simpler than trying to manually(by radio) control the angle of incidence of the main foils which would be the exact scale solution. Using UptiP foils would require very little control input if they are well designed BUT they would require(probably) lifting the windward foil as you tack or gybe.
The reason I am interested in constructing such a large model was, first and foremost, because it would look, as the kids say, hella dope, and because many of the videos of Mini40s and smaller RC foilers I watched showed that they were rarely able to maintain a stable flight, often being knocked down by waves. I thought maybe a larger vessel, with more mass and inertia, could maintain a smoother flight?
Did you look at Ian Holts boats? They seem to be pretty good and are the only RC foilers now being produced. Foiling radio control trimarans https://www.boatdesign.net/threads/foiling-radio-control-trimarans.55840/ ------------- You're pretty much right about size but it depends on where you want to sail and other factors including the type of foil system. The production foilers like Ians are mostly surface piercing foilers with altitude controlled by speed. That means the foils don't actively add to RM. Ian was working on a foiler with a wand based altitude system-if that's perfected it might be a good choice if it works well because the foils automatically increase RM as necessary. The 19 year old F3 trimaran foiler used wands but it was patterned after the fullsize RAVE so it had a wave height limit where it would bottom out. Worked well in smooth ponds but had trouble in the intercoastal. The foil height wasn't adjustable but could be on a "modern" version. Wand based foilers using the Bradfield system are best if they are designed for the place you want to sail. The bigger, the more versatile it will be. These wand based foilers are the only type of foiler* with automatic altitude control that uses the foils to generate most of the RM-a good thing for a model foiler. * With the exception of the Hobie Trifoiler type designed by Greg Ketterman that uses dual independent "feelers" out in front of the boat that act as surface sensors. If you want a cat then I'd suggest doing one with a wand based altitude control system. Decide on size after you've done a lot more studying and evaluating the tradeoffs. The F3 foiling tri was 56" LOA and 72" wide. The Fire Arrow foil system may be the best system for rough water especially if you look at the large fullsize tri's that use the system but neither of these tri's is an "Americas Cup" boat or an F50 type. But you could do an F50 type cat using a wand based foil system instead of a scale manual/electronic system. A tri makes a better RC model multihull, in my opinion.
Also, where could I find good AC50 drawings? I've only found ETNZ AC72 drawings here; Chevalier Taglang: Scoop: AC72 Drawings unveiled http://chevaliertaglang.blogspot.com/2013/06/scoop-ac72-drawings-unveiled.html
WK, if you want a spectacular model that will impress to the max, why don't you consider a scale or semicale model of the 100' Gitana 17 or one of the other ULTIM trimarans: Gitana 17-100' Trimaran Foiler-Launch 7/17/17 https://www.boatdesign.net/threads/gitana-17-100-trimaran-foiler-launch-7-17-17.58231/page-10 You get a spectacular model with a super foil system and proven capability. Additionally, ensure that you have the essential accessories—for example, the charger, batteries, and radio equipment needed to operate the boat. This vessel comes with many benefits and offers a lifetime of enjoyment and racing on the water.

What are the features of a trimaran?

A trimaran is a type of boat that has become increasingly popular in recent years. It is designed to be faster and more stable than traditional monohull boats, thanks to its unique construction. At the heart of the trimaran is its hull, which is different from that of a monohull in that it features one main, larger hull flanked by two smaller “floats” on either side. These floats are connected to the main hull by lateral beams, resulting in a distinctive three-hulled design that sets the trimaran apart from other boats.

While a trimaran is rigged similarly to a monohull, it differs in the way it heels. Thanks to its extra hull, a trimaran offers less hydrodynamic resistance and therefore greater speed. The keel of a monohull can limit its speed, but with a trimaran, there is less need for a deep keel, allowing it to travel at higher speeds more easily. This makes the trimaran ideal for racing or for those who want to get from one place to another more quickly.

In contrast to the trimaran, a catamaran has two equal-sized parallel hulls. While similar in concept to a trimaran, catamarans have wide beams that offer greater stability but may reduce speed. Additionally, a trimaran has the ability to sail in shallow waters, which can be a significant advantage in some locations.

Overall, the trimaran’s unique design makes it an attractive option for those looking for a fast, stable, and versatile boat that is ideal for a range of water-based activities. Whether you are a sailor, racer, or simply looking for a comfortable and stable vessel for your next adventure on the water, a trimaran is certainly worth considering.

How much does a foiling catamaran cost?

It’s no secret that sailing can be a costly hobby or profession, and that’s especially true when it comes to high-tech, high-performance boats like foiling catamarans. But just how much does a foiling catamaran cost?

For those not in the know, a foiling catamaran is a type of boat that uses hydrofoils to lift the hulls out of the water, reducing drag and allowing for incredible speed and agility on the water. And as you might expect, these types of boats don’t come cheap.

That being said, there are some relatively affordable options out there if you know where to look. One such option is the UFO, a foiling catamaran that was launched in 2017 and can reportedly fly at speeds of 15-20 knots. But perhaps even more impressive than its performance is its price tag: at $7,000, it’s one of the most economical multihull foilers on the market.

Of course, $7,000 is still a significant amount of money, and there are plenty of other foiling catamarans out there that cost much more. But for those looking to get into the world of foiling without breaking the bank, the UFO could be a compelling option to consider. Just be prepared to spend some time learning the ins and outs of foiling if you’re not already familiar with this exciting and challenging style of sailing.

options and accessories

Rig options.

Option: Fiberfoam Carbon mast, 7.5m, iFLY specific design, based on a-class design : 2.400 €

  • by choosing this option, the iFLY serial mast (black anodized aluminum) is replaced by a high-tech Fiberfoam carbon mast. The carbon mast reduces weight by 4.7kg and increases sailing performance. However, the carbon mast is not recommended for double trapezing

Option: separable mast : 490 €

  • The joint is made with a massive carbon sleeve inside. We did not observe any performance loss. The upper 2.25m of the mast can be taken off within seconds. No tools needed. It can be done without removing shrouds or diamonds and allows solving storage problems. Further this option can reduce shipping cost e.g. for overseas transport. Some sailors with height restrictions in the port or on their way to the water solve this by reducing thus the boat hight to 5.8m.

Option: Softwing rig for highest performance : 2.400 €

  • iFLY is delivered with a state of the art decksweeper rig (like this year’s A-class sails). By choosing this option, the standard sail is replaced by the Heru Softwing rig: a three-dimensional structure bringing performance gains. Very different than a solid wing (as used e.g. in AC50 / C-Class) the softwing is not fragile and can be rolled and hoisted like a standard sail. It is watertight and thus floating, making righting up after a capsize even easier.

Mainsail halyard : 270 €

  • iFLY comes with a push up main sail hoisting system (A-class style). Sailors who choose the standard decksweeper sail are free to choose the hoisting system they love more. For boats configured with the Softwing, halyard is strongly recommended.

auxiliary head sail for early take off in light winds. The revolutionary lightwind headsail. New developed sail configuration based on Genoa/Code0:

  • The CodeF is a light wind head-sail used from 0 to 10 knots. This sail is used both, upwind and downwind, to get earlier on the foils. It is stowed away if wind picks up. CodeF is an option for super light wind. Usually You will sail the iFLY15 just with the mainsail.

CodeF preparation : 560 €

  • riveted and screwed cleats, lamination in hull: bow tube. CodeF preparation is needed for CodeF sailing. The option should be ordered, in case CodeF kit will be added later.

CodeF premium option: surcharge : 580 €

  • High-end version of CodeF, made from a kevlar fiber laminate

Second set of length adjustable trapeze, for double trapezing: surcharge : 220 € (per piece)

  • Double trapezing is not recommended with carbon mast.
  • Massive increase of righting moment allows performance gains of up to 25%, especially when full foiling upwind

First look: Persico 72ft 40-knot foiling cruising cat

  • Toby Hodges
  • July 7, 2023

This bold design represents a new state of the art in combining comfort and speed: it’s an ultra-high performance package capable of cruising at sustained speeds above 20 knots, yet has enough space to live aboard in genuine comfort.

rc foiling catamaran

Product Overview

The new foiling catamaran design is the result of Persico’s strategy to translate knowledge the yard gains from its work in aerospace, IMOCA 60 and America’s Cup spheres into very high performance cruising yachts. The structure is of high modulus prepreg carbon/Nomex, there’s an all-carbon interior, plus a Southern Spars rotating mast with Future Fibres’ ECsix and AEROsix composite standing rigging.

The boat is intended as a semi-foiler that can switch to full foiling mode, skimming 20cm above the water in appropriate conditions. The 7m-long righting moment foils are rake controlled and complemented by daggerboards for leeway control, plus T-rudders also with rake control. Design of the foils and flying system was done using the Gomboc VPP software that was instrumental in creating the AC75 foiling monohull and is now also widely used in the IMOCA class.

“The foil has the same purpose as the one used in the IMOCA class,” explains Ferdinand van West, lead designer of Morrelli and Melvin, “but it has been adapted to a catamaran and can be fully retracted.” The foils become effective in 9 knots of breeze and boat speeds well over 20 knots are predicted in just 13 knots of true wind.

Gunboat G4: is this the world’s first flying cruiser? She could do 40 knots on foils

When the Gunboat G4 launches this spring, she will be the most outrageous coastal cruiser-racer ever seen – and certainly…

In stronger conditions downwind speeds of 40 knots and an astonishing 26 knots upwind are expected. For a more comfortable ride and greater safety factor maximum speeds can be dialled down via a fully autonomous control system, which can gradually lower the hulls and decrease speed to a comfortable level set by the owner.

A further advantage for a cruising yacht is that draught with the foils raised is a mere 65cm (2ft 2in), though with the foils lowered this increases to 5.31m (17ft 5in).

Despite the boat’s speed potential, it is primarily intended as a very spacious luxury cruiser with all the associated systems including more than 500lt of refrigeration space, a pizza oven and a whopping 64,000 BTU (approx 19kW) of air conditioning. This is powered by twin variable-speed 20kW diesel Fischer Panda generators, which also supply hotel loads the 2kW solar array can’t cover.

Twin 25kW Torqeedo electric motors, allied to a 40kW BMW I3 battery, provide auxiliary propulsion at a cruising speed of 8 knots, with the generators available for use as range extenders if necessary.

Construction has already started in Persico’s new facility at the Italian port of La Spezia, with the boat scheduled for launch in summer 2024.

WATCH: How do the F50 foils work?

rc foiling catamaran

SailGP’s high speed, foiling F50 is the culmination of 10 years of development in high performance, multi-hull racing.

The F50's cutting edge technology is evident in its status as the first boat to hit 99.94 km/h during racing - and it has a top speed of over 100 km/h.

But how does the F50 fly above the water and how to teams work together to get as much speed out of the boat as possible? The F50 foils using rudders with elevators and two daggerboards for a fast and stable flight.

The boards are constructed with higher modulus carbon fiber for less resistance at high speeds.

A number of technical innovations work to reduce the onset of cavitation - which occurs when the reduction of water pressure ‘boils’ the water around the foils - creating air bubbles which increase drag and reduce lift.

Teams must therefore work together to fly as high as possible without flying too high and crashing into the water, rising speed and losing speed in SailGP’s high pressure racing.

Kamaz FTL hauler registers NatCar brand

rc foiling catamaran

MOSCOW. Sept 4 (Interfax) - National Carrier JSC, the full truckload freight trucking company headed by former Globaltruck CEO Ilya Sattarov that Russian truck maker Kamaz founded this summer, applied to register the brand NatCar at the end of August, the registry of federal intellectual property service Rospatent showed.

The NatCar brand is also mentioned in the recruitment ads of National Carrier, which is actively looking for E-class drivers. It is offering working with this year's model Kamaz diesel trucks from the flagship K5 line and new dry goods (curtainsider) and refrigerated trailers.

National Carrier was founded on July 7 in Moscow with charter capital of 1 billion rubles, the Unified State Register of Legal Entities showed. The company registered two branches in early August, in Yekaterinburg and Elektrostal, Moscow Region. The company specializes in truck logistics and associated activities, including digitization processes.

A spokesman for National Carrier told Interfax earlier that the company plans to provide FTL trucking services using its own fleet, "as well as the resources of hired truckers." The company's fleet will initially consist of 400 semi-trailer trucks with a 50/50 ratio of curtainside to refrigerated trailers, and it plans to primarily operate on domestic routes, he said.

The company has preliminary agreements with major customers among marketplaces and retailers in the FMCG and DIY segments, the spokesman said. Strong demand for trucking services is expected toward the end of the year, so there is interest from customers, he said.

Kamaz marketing director Ashot Arutyunyan announced at the International Moscow Automotive Forum at the end of August that the truck maker was the principal investor in National Carrier. He did not comment on the new company's shareholder structure, but said it is a Kamaz startup.

  1. Radio Controlled Foiling America's Cup Catamaran: AC 50RC

The FINAL rule released in June 2015, set the length of the full size boat at 15m or 49.2'. instead of 48. My proposal (based on an earlier suggestion by John Xman) is to adopt the same change for the model: Length 1.5 m or 4.92 ' (59"). The AC guys are calling their boat the AC 50-in my opinion we should call this boat the "AC 50RC".

The Fire Arrow foil system may be the best system for rough water especially if you look at the large fullsize tri's that use the system but neither of these tri's is an "Americas Cup" boat or an F50 type. But you could do an F50 type cat using a wand based foil system instead of a scale manual/electronic system.
