Poole Harbour is one of the world’s largest natural harbours and its extensive sheltered waters provide a magnificent haven for recreational sailing and water sports.
The natural harbour has a large number of swinging moorings and anchorages, as well as several marinas. It offers complete shelter and can be entered in almost any conditions. The tidal streams run hard in the approach channel and can kick up a bit of a chop in a strong wind over tide situation. Be aware of the chain ferry operating across the narrow harbour entrance - all craft under 50 metres must give way to the ferry and look out for the commercial cross-channel vessels that use the harbour. Large areas of the harbour are quite shallow, but it is permissible to anchor anywhere out of the main channels, clear of local moorings and where there is sufficient water. Please note landing is controlled on Brownsea Island.
If you are planning to go to Cobbs Quay Marina, note you have to pass through the two lifting bridges Twin Sails and Poole Bridge .
