The Sailor's Style Guide: How to Dress at a Yacht Club

If you've been invited to a casual yacht club rendezvous, you'll need the right threads to fit in.  in this guide, we'll walk you through the yacht club attire you'll need to fit in. hint: you can find the perfect outfit head to toe with castaway.

You've been invited to a meal or event at a local yacht club, but you've never been to one before. Suddenly, the panic sets in. What should you wear? Fortunately, there are lots of options and visiting a yacht club does not mean you have to spend a lot of money just to fit in. This post will give you some pointers on yacht club attire so that you feel neither under nor overdressed, and can really enjoy yourself and have a great time at the club.

Before you even think about what to wear, check to see if the yacht club you're going to has a dress code posted online. Most of them do, and the rules can vary from club to club. The Nantucket Yacht Club , for example, requires semi-formal attire for its dinners and cocktail attire including ties for men during its dinner dances and balls. The Hyannis Yacht Club goes into a little more detail. It accepts stylish casual wear including clean, neat jeans and shorts for lunch. For dinner, guests are expected to step it up by leaving the denim at home and wearing sports coats. Different areas of a club may also have different dress rules. Bars and outdoor decks tend to more lax and allow casual clothing.

Sometimes, the easiest way of narrowing down what to wear is to eliminate what you should not wear. This is just a partial list of how not to show up at any kind of yacht club unless you want to be denied admittance or receive a lot of disapproving glares. All rules listed apply to the inside of the club, and can vary for beach and dock rulings.

Flip Flops or Going Barefoot: This rule applies INSIDE the club, or for any meal time. Most people love the beach, but going barefoot is not only unacceptable, but unhygienic.

You'll want to wear appropriate footwear such as sturdy sandals or closed toe shoes. While a lot of children and adults love their flip-flops, they may be a little too casual for a yacht club atmosphere. The most popular choice here is a boat shoe style but a bridle bit driver is always appropriate - check the latest . The lightly worn leather and pencil-curled laces fit the bill in the cool department.

Torn, Stained, or Worn Clothing: Any attire that is showing signs of wear such as rips, stains that never came out, holes, missing buttons, etc. should be left at home.

Baseball Caps and Other Hats: Most yacht clubs prefer that men remove their caps when inside the venue. Save them for the sailing excursions.

Extra points on the water if you rock the Club’s Burgee on the hat!

Swimwear: Just a no-no. Save it for the boat and the beach. A cover-up can be acceptable for the patio.

Going Shirtless: Nope!

Undershirts as Shirts: See above. You may also want to be careful about choosing a t-shirt, particularly one with graphics, when visiting a yacht club. Most prefer that you wear a collared shirt, even if it's a casual one such as a polo shirt.

Tank tops for men and any tank tops for women that are skimpy and don't hide undergarments should be saved for another occasion.

Women have a lot of options when it comes to visiting a yacht club. Linen and cotton make the perfect summer blouses. A light but structured Sleeveless Top paired with a  sweater is perfect for warding off cool sea breezes when you're out on the deck. A polo or collared shirt works well for the yacht club scene as well. You can also consider a dressy blouse that has a little bit of flounce to it. If shorts are allowed for the time and area of the club you're visiting, consider sporting  Sailing  shorts  with a cute anchor embroidery. They're cool, classy, and show off just the right amount of leg. Casual skirts and dresses are perfectly fine as well as long as they're not too short and revealing. If you're attending a party at a yacht club you may need to wear a nice cocktail dress, or a classic Tunic Dress for a day event. Special events such as balls and dinner dances usually specify what is appropriate attire on the invitation.

Don't forget to have fun with accessories! A straw handbag can complete a nautical themed look.

For most casual yacht club occasions, men can't go wrong with a collared shirt and long pants or Cisco Shorts . Pastel and preppy shades such as summer green, hurricane red, and islander blue rule here.

When casual attire is allowed, collared sport or polo shirts are always in fashion. Seersucker and linen shirts are available in several colors and patterns for summer club get-togethers. If jeans are not allowed, seersucker or cotton canvas pants are still casual and comfortable yet dressy enough for all areas of a yacht club. If you really want to show your love of nautical dressing, consider wearing a fun Embroidered Pant !

Or you can opt for solid pants but add some nautical flair with an embroidered belt . Classic summer staples like Seersucker and Madras Patches will make you the talk of the Club, in a good way!

For those chilly sea breezes and evenings, a quarter zip pullover wards off the cool air while keeping you stylish and casual.

It's a good idea to keep a sportcoat and a few ties in your closet just in case the yacht club you're visiting requires it. Opt for a fun all over embroidered jacket, or a Madras Patchwork style to really up your game.

Kids' clothing should conform to the same yacht club rules as established for grown-up guests. If you really want your son to look cute, consider dressing him in the same matching outfit as dad.

I've done a "search" and also viewed many you-tube videos and still am a bit confused about the area for Yacht Club Check in.  We will be arriving by limo and I am assuming that they will drive us to the luggage drop-off area.  Question 1:  Is the YC drop off clearly marked or is it mixed in with general drop-off?  Question 2: I understand that there will be a blue tent.  Is this located outside of the actual terminal building or inside the building?  In all the videos I've viewed I cannot find it pictured.  Once I find that tent I'm home free!  I sure would appreciate someone's help understanding how to find it.  Thank You.

Just right before the luggage drop off on the left side of the road is the blue YC tent, can’t miss it. That’s where you drop the luggage. They will take it, tag it and point you to go by the YC person holding a paddle in front of the cruise terminal. They will escorted you from there after checking off your room number on their sheet.

There is a sign in front of the YC Tent but if you didn't know where it is, it could be confusing.  It's easier for me to explain first where you go to get escorted into the terminal.  That's to the far left (the opposite side that you drive in).  Now if you continue on the road which goes left, it will be past the taxi drop off/ pick up area.  At this point, you should see the blue tent.  Hopefully that makes sense.  After you drop your bags off, just go to the terminal and you'll see the roped off area for YC guests (left side of the terminal).  Someone will be there with a list of YC guests.

Question for Mushroom was it easy to find the tent?

I'll let you know...We sail on the 21st.  However, from what I've learned from this board, it should be easy...even for me!

In May unfortunately we had to walk inside the terminal to get a wheelchair for my hubby.  It was quick but it was a bit of a walk from the YC tent.  When we go in October I may have the Uber driver drop him off in front of the YC entrance and I'll drop off the luggage.

The blue YC tent is circled and then the arrow is the entrance for YC.  The X is the other entrance to the terminal.  This was how it was in May.

I had the same question - and pre-trip jitters - and this map makes it perfectly clear.  Thanks so much!

Our cruise is in 49 days and seeing a real picture of the lot and the location of the YC tent is getting me so excited for the trip. It's our first time in YC. Also, it's my husband's first cruise and my third (both were 10 years ago). He has no idea I splurged on YC nor that we have the duplex suite. I'm thinking it's going to backfire on me...he's going to think every ship cabin is that large. LOL

We'll be getting on when you are getting off!  We'll be in a YC balcony. We can't consider the duplex suites because my husband has mobility issues and the stairs would be a problem.  It looks fabulous - enjoy!

We had a duplex on 12 as part of a b2b.  Lots of room.  You can exit through bat cave on 13 but not enter.

Did they move the tent? When I was on in April the item circled here was a bus shelter-esqe structure in the corning of the parking lot. We have inclement weather on the way back and lots of folks waited there with bags on disembarkation while someone else went for the car. The YC tent was just below the word "Wharf" that runs parallel to the ship, between that and the deep bus-friendly parking spots there.

You must have been getting off when we were getting on....(4/29)....and on that day we only had carry-ons.

Next trip is a longer one, so I may need a "big suitcase".

Questions:  Is this drop off for YC guests only?  Upon disembarkation, are the YC bags in a separate area?

You are correct!  The YC blue tent was one lane over to the right in the photo.

MSC Yacht club will have a blue tent outisde the terminal of which you will be escorted through security and checked in, in the exclusive yacht club area, you will then be escorted onto the ship to have fun and enjoy.

Thanks! Going back in October and need to drop off Mom and Dad and the suitcases so working on my plan. When I was on in April, I was alone and so had a lot less stuff and just parked and walked my bag over. As it was the first sailing I’m sure they’ve made some changes to the process since then.

Yes, you leave your bags with the porters in this tent. Then you walk across and there are port employees with YC signs to take you into the terminal. He escorted me through security and took me to the YC check in room to be handed off, then the ship butlers were waiting.   

for disembark, YC bags are still in the same bag hall. But there is a different color tag for YC so all the YC bags are together.

The Brooklyn clubs collection spans the dates 1843 to 2005, with bulk dates of 1860 to 1960, and measures 3.3 linear feet. Clubs represented in the collection are varied, with interests ranging from political, to professional, to social. Materials represented in the collection include yearbooks, event programs, constitutions and bylaws, newsletters, bulletins, membership lists, calendars, annual reports, and printed ephemera.

Historical note

Political clubs were among the earliest clubs to be organized in New York City. In the 1760s, along with pre-revolutionary rumblings in America, political clubs formed in support of the colonists or the loyalists. Following the American Revolutionary War, political clubs were established to support newly formed political parties, chiefly the Democratic Republicans and the Federalists. During the 19th century, as the idea of civic responsibility grew among citizens, so did the establishment of political clubs. Political clubs could be small and localized such as those that were organized within wards (small political units in New York City representing a geographic area within the city) or large city-wide political clubs. By the 1850s, political clubs had much influence over the city; the outcome of elections was often decided by strong voter turn out from political club members.

Following the American Civil War, political clubs began to loose clout, and by the end of the 19th century, many citizens had turned to social clubs to affect civic reform. Social clubs were also being established solely for pleasure, camaraderie, and personal growth. In the 1830s, New York City had only three social clubs (the Union Club; the Hone Club; and the Kent Club). In the last quarter of the 19th century, New York City had more social clubs than any other city the world, with the exception of London. This period also saw the formation of university clubs, athletic clubs, women's clubs, and professional clubs, among others.

Several factors led to the demise of many social clubs, chiefly the invention of the automobile and its effect on how and where people lived (for example, the growth of suburbs), the financial fallout following a series of economic depressions in the United States in the 1890s through the 1930s, and the establishment of anti-discrimination laws that, in part, addressed the exclusionary practices so many social clubs held. In the 1950s and 1960s, neighborhood social clubs flourished within local immigrant populations in New York City, many of which are still active today.

Materials represented in the collection include yearbooks, event programs, constitutions and bylaws, certificates of membership, newsletters, bulletins, membership lists, calendars, annual reports, and printed ephemera.

The yearbooks are of particular interest as they often include membership lists, names of officers and committee members, constitutions and bylaws, articles of incorporation, and historical information pertaining to the club.
