The spacious and sheltered cockpit, with space for eight features audio and a built-in refrigerator. The knowledge, experience and skill of Humphreys’ naval architects, combined with Oyster’s in-house design studio and our craftspeople ensure complete reassurance and confidence at sea. The excellent stability is further enhanced by the intelligent placement of utilities throughout the hull form.

70 foot yacht guide: finding your perfect yacht.

  • June 18, 2019

The 70 foot yacht range often represents a demarcation in yachting. Vessels below this size range are often owner-operated whereas once yacht owners get into the 70 foot range, owners typically do not operate the yacht themselves. The 70 foot yacht is also just shy of what most consider to be the superyacht category. For instance,  Boat International  tracks superyacht sales and production data of yachts worldwide that are at least 24 meters in length (78-79 feet).

Image 1635: 3042

As the yacht size increases, the complexity of the purchase can also increase. While we often still begin with general use case questions such as what the yacht will be used for, how many guests should it accommodate and where do you plan to travel with the yacht, there are other important elements to consider when purchasing a 70 foot yacht. Considerations such as build quality, yacht type, cruising speed, propulsion options and more are all important elements to thoroughly examine.

Understanding the various yacht types is key to matching the right 70 foot yacht to your needs. Express yachts (can be referred to as express cruisers or sport cruisers) typically refer to yachts with a single deck above the hull and a living space below deck. These yachts often catch the eyes of onlookers as they are sleek and sporty.

Express yachts can be further grouped by looking at the hard top or enclosure. Typically the hard top express yacht either offers a semi-enclosure or full-enclosure for the operator. An open express yacht is different, however, in that it has maximum space for sun with little to no shade on deck. The open express can sometimes be referred to as a “Mediterranean” style yacht.

The flybridge or sedan bridge yacht refers to a yacht that includes an additional space above the main deck. This additional level can include seating and control station. Often times since the flybridge above is present, the main deck will have an enclosed space. The flybridge itself can be open air or enclosed.

Interior Layout

When yachts get into the 70 foot range, the interior layout can include a wide variety of options to suit your particular yachting lifestyle. Yachts in this range often have a spacious main deck salon with excellent seating, dining and entertaining spaces. Down below, the yachts will often have four or more cabins plus crew quarters. Newer yachts feature impressive full beam master bedrooms that come with remarkable spaciousness and the latest amenities. Quite often, a flybridge includes additional seating and control station.

Image 1637: 3044

Finishes and interior designs can vary widely depending on the model and age of the yacht. Commissioning a new yacht build of course means that owners can provide input and select particular finishes and features to meet their needs and tastes.

Considerations When Buying A 70 Foot Yacht

If you’re relatively new to yachting, it can be good to get some experience. Taking time to  charter a yacht  in various destinations can help you narrow down what yacht you wish to buy. Getting familiar through actual use of different yacht types can be very helpful. What features and amenities are important to you? What kind of crew do you anticipate needing? Are you looking for a smaller, more easy-to-operate yacht or are you looking for the most luxurious yachting experience while cruising longer distances? Experience is truly the best way to get closer to accurate answers to these questions.

Understanding your estimated budget for a yacht purchase is a crucial element in narrowing down your options. While understanding that there is always a bigger and more expensive yacht, identify a price range that you are comfortable with while also factoring in crew, maintenance and operating expenses.

Once you identify the yacht type and price range, with the assistance of a yacht broker, you can begin identifying potential options. If considering used yachts, buyers will always encounter the trade-off between age and size. A newer and smaller boat can often cost the same or more than a larger vessel with more years. Of course, newer boats may have less maintenance and upkeep costs while also providing updated technology and features. It’s at this point where an experienced yacht broker can really provide tremendous value. Understanding your needs and budget, a yacht broker can provide excellent advice on selecting yachts to target for purchase that will lead to years of enjoyment and minimal stress.

Custom designing a new yacht can be a thrilling process for owners. Essentially, the owner can provide input at the earliest design phases of the process. The entire design and build process can take years, and the owner experiences taking the yacht from design concept to launch. A semi-custom approach is also available through a number of yacht manufacturers where the owner is essentially purchasing a production model and providing customizations during the build process. Again, talking through your needs and goals with a yacht broker can lead to the most optimal outcome.

Hiring the necessary and appropriate crew for your yacht is an important consideration where many yacht owners can make mistakes. TGYG’s yacht brokers have experience advising on the crew hiring process for yachts of all sizes. Consulting your yacht broker during this process can lead to ensuring the right personnel are in place and to potentially saving quite a bit of money.

Lastly, resale value of the yacht is also an important consideration. The degree to which your yacht holds its value will be based on a number of factors including the quality of the build and finish, maintenance of the vessel during the years of operation, the age of the boat and the overall market conditions at the time of sale. Discuss with your yacht broker the potential variance in resale between the yachts being considered for purchase. An experienced yacht broker who knows the market can provide guidance and help advise on how much this should be taken into consideration at the time of purchase.

As you can tell, working with an experienced yacht broker that you trust is crucial when pursuing a 70 foot yacht or bigger. With the complexity of the vessels and the many variables to consider, a yacht broker that truly knows the product can be the difference between a yacht purchase that leads to minimal stress and years of enjoyment for you and your family and a purchase that can lead to stressful ownership and regret.

Tom George Yacht Group yacht brokers pride themselves on establishing life-long relationships with clients. Our clients’ long-term enjoyment with their desired yachting lifestyle is our focus. This is evidenced by our trustworthy guidance and assistance throughout not just the purchase process but through years of ownership as well.  Contact us today  if you have questions about your yachting needs.

Clipper 70 – First Impressions

  • Matthew Sheahan
  • January 11, 2013

And a further timely reminder that amateur offshore racing is putting the pressure on professional events

Clipper 70 St Katharine Docks

Clipper Ventures turned heads at the London Boat Show last year when its founder Sir Robin Knox-Johnston unveiled plans for a new boat – it wasn’t what many were expecting for a design that would carry 600 fare paying amateurs around a 40,000 mile course. Before signing up for the longest global race of them all with a course that has two long downwind Southern Ocean legs, around 40 percent of the crew will be newcomers to sailing.

So is a boat with a fixed bowsprit, a slender fine entry and chined stern sections that look like they had been taken off the lines plan of a Volvo 70 or an Open 60, really the right tool for the job? Knox Johnston is adamant that it is.

“I think the penny really dropped for me when I sailed my own Open 60 in the Velux 5 Oceans Race,” he told me. “While Open 60s look pretty extreme, most of the time they’re not difficult to handle and they clearly perform well which left me asking why couldn’t our crews experience the same? Many of them will have seen the modern offshore racers and are clearly aware of what’s out there and quite rightly want to have a go themselves.”

But while there are similarities to the ‘Open’ style, the new Clipper boats are a different beast under the skin. For starters, at 34 tonnes they are more than double the weight. (A VOR70 weighs just 14 tonnes.) The Clipper boats are significantly shallower as they need to be to get into some of the harbours around the world and draw just 3.00m and have fixed non-canting keels. At a full compliment of 22 the Clipper 70s carry more than double the number of crew as well which doesn’t come cheap when it comes to weight saving. Plus the boats are robustly built using conventional composite materials.

Nevertheless, the new boat is around 3-4 tonnes lighter than the previous 68 footers and carries more sail area which is certain to make this new generation significantly quicker than the previous boats.

Her open/trench style cockpit with twin pedestals and wheels along with her flush racing deck are further fundamental details that set her apart from the more conservative layouts of the previous two generations. So too is the move to asymmetric spinnakers flown from the fixed bowsprit. But the move towards this sleeker more racy layout is not simply about looks, but more about a deck that is easier, more efficient and more comfortable to work.

Below decks the accommodation is spartan but functional and reflects the basic fact that only two things other than the sailing will matter when the crews are racing – food and sleep. Here a giant galley occupies the midship area of the boat straddling the centreline, with the rest of the boat dedicated to bunks, two heads, a nav station aft and sail stowage forward.

But for me, the really impressive thing about this boat and the company is when you look at how Clipper Ventures is outperforming the professional scene.

The next race which starts in August this year and is all but sold out, will see 12 identical boats competing, (up on the fleet of 10 last time), with a total of 600 fare paying crew taking part, up on the previous event which saw 400 compete. If the race follows previous trends, 40 percent of the sailors will be women. So far the Clipper race has seen 3,000 people take part made up of 43 nationalities.

So where are the new people coming from and why are they attracted?

“Our UK numbers have remained largely the same,” explained Knox-Johnston, “the biggest growth has been from overseas. The second biggest nationality in the race is Australia. The event has really started to take a hold overseas.

“I don’t think there’s one simple answer as to why people are so keen to take part. Clearly there’s a strong element of challenge, but I think there’s also greater awareness of our event, we have a good reputation and the route’s interesting.”

It certainly is and leads you straight back to Volvo/Whitbread comparisons.

When you look at the first half of the race course which takes the fleet South America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand making it impossible not to draw similarities the former Whitbread/Volvo route. Ironic really given that the Volvo has been drawn away from the traditional Southern Ocean route in search of commercially viable stopovers.

Here too there are further interesting comparisons. The Clipper race charges all the venues that it visits and while the company won’t disclose the sums, £500,000 is believed to be the figure just for hosting a start.

“The arrival of the fleet has a big economic impact at host venues,” said Knox-Johnston. “Its not just the boats that arrive but the friends and families of the crew plus the impact of the global television coverage that we get.”

Each of the boats has a primary sponsor and the crews all pay for the legs. There is of course nothing new in this concept, but in a week when the Fastnet race sold out in less than 24 hours to a fleet made up predominantly by amateurs, it is yet another example of how this type of racing is thriving.

The big professional gigs like the America’s Cup, Volvo, Vendee Globe and others may be struggling to attract money, venues and entries, but we shouldn’t take this to suggest that yacht racing is in crisis.

It isn’t. The new Clipper 70 may look like a modern grand prix offshore racer but behind the scenes she’s very different, for all the right reasons.

Clipper Race yachts

The Clipper Race is one of the biggest challenges of the natural world and an endurance test like no other. Its a real adventure for those participating . With some crew with no previous sailing experience, it’s a record breaking 40,000 nautical mile race around the world on a 70-foot ocean racing yacht.

When Sir Robin Knox-Johnston approached us to design a yacht for this purpose - we thought he was ambitious in his goals! Several editions later we can see his vision was ahead of his time and the boats have provided a platform for some of the most exciting and challenging racing ever seen - with crews from diverse backgrounds and experience competing on level terms and facing the Oceans many for the first time.

This is the only truly challenging Round-the-Word race these days, not a speed test by some seasoned professional sailors.

Maserati has been around the world since she last visited the Bay in June 2017. Argo and Maserati  last faced off in the Caribbean 600. Just 48 hours ahead of the start, Argo was overcome by a gust and flipped. But the team managed to right her, repair her, and make the start ! These oceangoing 70-footers travel the world easily. Despite their thousands of high-speed miles, they are rugged yet delicate. Rugged enough to take severe punishment when clocking 30+ knots in ocean swells. Delicate when maximizing speed balanced with control while maneuvering on a bumpy ocean.

Powerplay

On Saturday we sailed aboard the schooner Seaward as part of the Master Mariners Regatta while Maserati and Powerplay  strutted their stuff on a busy Memorial Day weekend. We had raced against the owner of Powerplay , Peter Cunningham, aboard J/29s in the ’80s. So we reached out to him to see if we might grab a coffee and learn a little more about the path of sailing a J/29 to a MOD70. Always enthusiastic, Cunningham said, “Come for a sail.” So we did.

On Tuesday afternoon, the team swapped out the delivery sails, which had brought the boat to San Francisco from Grenada, for racing sails. This process included getting in close to the limited Tiburon wind shadow, then backing the boat down in full reverse to reduce apparent wind, allowing the crew to hoist the four headsails on furlers. Once the headsails were all in place, we zipped up through Raccoon Strait and headed for the Cityfront, where we rendezvoused with photographer Abner Kingman. He had the challenging task of taking photos in windy, choppy seas while trying to keep up with a catamaran going 20-35 knots.

The video below features just a couple of minutes of an afternoon spent burning up the Bay between Alcatraz and Point Bonita. This segment shows a high-speed reach from the North Tower of the Golden Gate Bridge to near Pier 39. What is normally an hour of sailing for us aboard our Ranger 33 Summer Sailstice  probably took 10 minutes. We spent most of the reach sailing at more than 30 knots, with a top speed of about 37.

We anticipated being a bit terrified by the power and speed. It didn’t take long to realize that boat captain Charlie Ogletree and a very seasoned crew of professionals had everything under control. (Ogletree has been running Tom Siebel’s MOD70 Orion and his other boats.) The choreography of tacking a 70-ft x 55-ft multihull is intricate. Lots of clutches, hydraulics, links, travelers, winches and other adjusters smoothly link the coffee grinders to the powerful headsails rattling overhead. Upwind you roar along at 18-22 knots over big seas out the Gate, slow to a crawl during the tack, then sheet in and roar off in the other direction.

All three boats will line up to start tomorrow at about 1 p.m. off the Cityfront. If you have a way to get to the center span of the Golden Gate Bridge or up to the Marin Headlands, you’ll have fun watching them start their 500-mile battle. Given their speeds, they won’t be in view for long. But, the rarity of collecting this type of grand-prix offshore multihull on the West Coast could make it a worthwhile lunch break.

The California Offshore Race Week website previewed the expected weather: “During the first 12 hours of the race, weather forecasts show 25 knots of NW wind, with gusts up to 30 knots, and rough sea. It will be difficult for Maserati Multi 70 to fly steadily. Closer to the finish line, in the last 100 miles, the wind will drop abruptly. But at the moment the forecasts vary. The European models indicate a wind between 3 and 4 knots, whereas the American models are more optimistic.”

In addition to the three trimarans, the CA 500 has one outlier. Christian Doegl’s Swan 461 Free from Inverness YC will use the race as a training run for the Transpac.

We’ll get back to how Cunningham went from racing J/29s on San Francisco Bay to challenging race courses and oceans across the planet another time. However, it’s apparent that the excitement and enthusiasm of sailboat racing continues to inspire an inspiring sailor. The new CA 500 race track appears to be a perfect homecoming for Cunningham’s expanded portfolio of racing.

70 foot racing yacht

So cool to know that our old friend and J-29 owner, Peter Cunningham, is doing this stuff. He’s an absolutely great guy and wow…..he sure must have made some big-time “power plays” to get where he is today…..very impressive, Pete! Good luck in the race- I am rooting for Powerplay!

Swiftsure Yachts

Designed by Tom Wylie and built by Schooner Creek Boat Works in Portland, Oregon, Rage is a legendary West Coast sled. In 1994, Rage broke the Pacific Cup record set by Bill Lee’s Merlin by four hours. In 1996, she again set a new course record of 7 days, 22 hours and 1 minute. Rage has proven herself to be the ultimate ULDB with blistering speed potential, simple sail handling systems and strong construction. At the same time, she offers comfortable, beautifully finished accommodations and is easily sailed by a shorthanded crew. The proof is in the pudding as Rage has outperformed newer and far more complex boats. While she truly shines racing offshore, Rage was designed with an eye towards being cruised by shorthanded, an objective she has met and requires no conversion from “race” to “cruise” mode in her current configuration. Read the comments from below for a better understanding of what Rage is all about. She is only reluctantly for sale as her current owner has a larger Wylie designed sled under construction by Steve Rander, the builder and original owner of Rage. Sometimes “if you know, you know” and such is the case with Rage.

Owners’ comments:

Rage is a unique and amazing boat. Parting with her is tremendously hard for us. She has far exceeded our dreams. She is a rare combination of beauty, livability, speed and ease of handling. She has redefined what we expect in a boat both racing and cruising.

There is nothing like driving a 70 foot boat with a tiller. Nothing. Once you have done this you will never go back.  She had a wheel for a while and her crew revolted, demanding the tiller return. She feels like a big dinghy and one that is amazingly forgiving. Young people enjoy driving her. There are many times you can drive with two fingers on the tiller even at a brisk pace. On the return from Hawaii this past summer no one wanted to turn on the autopilot. Driving was just too much fun. Coming on deck one would see the helms-person sitting on the rail, hiking stick in hand with a big grin… something we call the “ Rage grin”. I still smile every-time I see her after any time apart. She is breathtaking. I encourage you not put the wheel back on without trying out the tiller experience. You will be hooked.

She is still competitive after almost 30 years. Still setting records – including the first winner of the Cascadia Cup awarded for the best combined score of the Pacific Northwest Offshore and Swiftsure races (2019). Still often a first to finish threat. She set a record in the Pacific Northwest Offshore in May 2022. We were the third boat in and fourth on corrected time in the 2022 Pacific Cup. She is blistering fast downwind and reached 27 knots multiple times during the downwind stretch run. Our young crew members call her a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Rage is relatively easy to handle with a modest crew. The deck is clean and her cockpit remains dry in virtually all conditions. The ideal crew size for a Hawaii race is 8. I did the Northern Century on her double handed in my sixties. Her rig is robust, simple, functional and fast. Amazingly well behaved even in challenging conditions. She wants to go straight. If she does not you likely have something adjusted poorly.  She is a wonderful teacher that way. I did over 7,000 miles on her this past summer and each day brought fresh joy and amazement.

The beauty and function of her classic wood interior is surprising for most people. Many crew members have told me that her berths are the most comfortable they have ever slept in. The galley is wonderful. She pampers her race crew and is a joy to take on a day sail or a long voyage. She was well received at the Port Townsend Wooden Boat festival in September of 2022. Just a few months after a class podium finish in the Pacific Cup.

Tom Wylie and Steve Rander came together to create a magical boat in Rage . During the 7,000 miles on her this past summer I decided I wanted to have the opportunity to keep enjoying sailing like this into my 80’s and if I am lucky beyond. Tom, Steve, and my wife and I are working on a new boat together. The core requirement was for the new boat to feel like Rage including being driven by a tiller. To be able to see the bow sitting on the rail with a tiller extension and pop out at over 25 knots. And then go below and feel like Captain Nathanael Herreshoff would approve of the interior.

Interior Accommodations

Finished in white painted surfaces and varnished butternut and Honduran mahogany, with a varnished teak and holly cabin sole, Rage’s interior is bright and spacious. Large overhead hatches and portlights allow excellent light and ventilation and well placed interior lighting illuminates the cabin at night. Her interior arrangement is finely conceived for long distance offshore racing or cruising and will comfortably sleep a full crew in two quarterberths, salon settees and pilot berths, and a master cabin pullman berth.

Starting forward is the master stateroom. There is a pullman style berth to port with a shelf above on the hull side. To starboard is an L-shaped settee with shelf above along the hull side. At the aft end of the settee is a small counter with two drawers below.

The head is just aft of the forward stateroom. A counter runs along the forward bulkhead. There is a mirror above and a locker below. The head is located on the outboard side of the compartment. There is a hanging locker located across the forward passageway to starboard.

The spacious salon is located just aft. Handrails run the length of the cabin to port and starboard. The cabin sides are trimmed with varnished mahogany veneer and there are two portlights on each side of the salon. To starboard is a straight settee with a pilot berth above and outboard. Forward of the settee there is a shelf with drawers above and below. To port is an L-shaped settee with pilot berth above and outboard. Additional storage is available in drawers just forward of the port settee. At the centerline, there is a beautifully varnished drop leaf table. Just forward on the bulkhead is a shallow cabinet with storage for bottles and glasses. There is a flat panel monitor mounted on the bulkhead above.

The outboard facing navigation station is aft and to starboard of the main salon. The wide, L-shaped table is perfect for spreading out admiralty charts and features storage below the hinged lifting top and two drawers and a hinged locker forward and to port. Outboard above the table, the AC/DC panel, SSB and VHF radios, stereo receiver and Garmin radar/chartplotter are within close reach of the navigator’s seat.

Across the salon to port is the well conceived L-shaped galley. A two-bin stainless sink is located at the forward, inboard end of the counter. Pressure hot/cold water and manual raw and fresh foot pumps are available. Below the sink there is a large locker and access to plumbing. Above the counter there are two smaller lockers that provide excellent storage space. Outboard of the sink is the top loading refrigerator compartment. Just aft is the new stainless steel gimbaled stove and oven. There is storage in a small hinged locker below and two drawers and a locker just aft. Outboard of the sink, there is excellent storage for dishes and dry goods on two divided shelves.

Twin quarter berths are aft and to port and starboard of the companionway stairs. There is a shelf above and aft along the hull side and excellent storage below the berth. Reading lights are located over the forward end of both berths.

Rage, 70' Racing Sailboat Designed by Tom Wylie

Updated: Aug 2, 2021

Rage is a Sunrise 70’ Ocean Racer designed by Tom Wylie . She was launched by Steve Rander in 1993 at his prior boatyard on the North Portland Harbor of the Columbia River. At that time, Schooner Creek Boat Works built complex racing sailboats in a single bay shed near Diversified Marine off I-5. Rage is built of “COVE” construction, which includes two diagonal layers of ⅛” cedar wood veneers set at 90° on each side of PVC foam core with epoxy resin. Her outer layer uses spruce wood for strength. Fiberglass covers the structure and is painted. She has fine mahogany and teak interior finishes.

At the bottom of a wooden gangway ladder sits a galley peninsula with a pass-thru to port. A swivel stool sits at the navigation station on starboard. The engine cover and interior bulkheads are built of Okoume plywood painted with wood fiddles. Pilot berths with curtains are aft with ample storage and big lazarettes behind on the stern. Forward has quarter berths amid-ship with settee bench seats, a table between, and hatch above. A head and wet locker is at the mast with a side berth forward on port below a hatch. Sail stowage is in the bow.

Her ample deck is made of birch plywood over foam. The open transom has raised seat edges housing the lazarette opening. Her cockpit has horseshoe seating around a  wooden tiller. A large primary winch is central behind the full width traveller. Raised wood bulwark edges of the cockpit carry forward into the house which has two horizontal house winches. The pit is controlled from the gangway hatch's two desktop winches. The starboard winch has an electric drive. The running back stays for the carbon fiber mast run to secondary winches. Her boom is made of plywood and she carries Doyle and North sails. She has a Volvo engine and motors at 7 knots. She has Garmin GPS navigation and sailing software.

Her masthead kite propels her to speeds of 30 knots. She has raced to Hawaii from California many times, as well as winning the Pacific Cup from LA to Tahiti in 2012. She has completed many Swiftsure and Oregon Offshore races and holds many trophies. She has travelled over 100,000 miles in the Pacific and is a testament to Schooner Creek Boat Works and the vision of Steve Rander.

Sailor Cole Brauer makes history as the first American woman to race solo around the world

Aboard her 40-foot racing boat First Light ,  29-year-old Cole Brauer just became the first American woman to race nonstop around the world by herself.

The New York native pulled into A Coruña, Spain, on Thursday after a treacherous 30,000-mile journey that took 130 days.

She thanked a cheering crowd of family and fans who had been waiting for her on shore.

“This is really cool and so overwhelming in every sense of the word,” she exclaimed, before drinking Champagne from her trophy.

The 5-foot-2 powerhouse placed second out of 16 avid sailors who competed in the Global Solo Challenge, a circumnavigation race that started in A Coruña with participants from 10 countries. The first-of-its-kind event   allowed a wide range of boats to set off in successive departures based on performance characteristics. Brauer started on Oct. 29, sailing down the west coast of Africa, over to Australia, and around the tip of South America before returning to Spain.

Brauer is the only woman and the youngest competitor in the event — something she hopes young girls in and out of the sport can draw inspiration from.

“It would be amazing if there was just one girl that saw me and said, ‘Oh, I can do that too,’” Brauer said of her history-making sail.

It’s a grueling race, and more than half of the competitors have dropped out so far. One struck something that caused his boat to flood, and another sailor had to abandon his ship after a mast broke as a severe storm was moving in.

The four-month journey is fraught with danger, including navigating the three “Great Capes” of Africa, Australia and South America. Rounding South America’s Cape Horn, where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet, is often likened to climbing Mount Everest because of its perfect storm of hazards — a sharp rise in the ocean floor and whipping westerly winds push up massive waves. Combined with the frigid waters and stray icebergs, the area is known as a graveyard for ships, according to NASA. Brauer  said  she was “so unbelievably stoked” when she sailed past Cape Horn in January.

Marco Nannini, organizer of the Global Solo Challenge, said the comparison to scaling Mount Everest doesn’t capture the difficulty of the race. Sailing solo means not just being a skipper but a project manager — steering the boat, fixing equipment, understanding the weather and maintaining one’s physical health.

Nannini cited the relatively minuscule number of people who have sailed around the world solo — 186, according to the International Association of Cape Horners — as evidence of the challenges that competitors face. More than 6,000 people have climbed Mount Everest, according to  High Adventure Expeditions .

Brauer stared down 30-foot waves that had enough force to throw her across the boat. In a scare caught on camera, she badly injured her rib   near the halfway point of the event. At another point, her team in the U.S. directed Brauer to insert an IV into her own arm due to dehydration from vomiting and diarrhea.

She was able to stay in constant communication with members of her team, most of whom are based in New England,   and keep herself entertained with Netflix and video calls with family through Starlink satellites.   That’s also how Brauer was able to use Zoom to connect with NBC News for an interview, while she was sailing about 1,000 miles west of the Canary Islands.

While Brauer was technically alone on First Light, she had the company of 450,000 followers on Instagram, where she frequently got candid about life on an unforgiving sea while reflecting on her journey.

“It all makes it worth it when you come out here, you sit on the bow, and you see how beautiful it is,” she said in an Instagram video, before panning the camera to reveal the radiant sunrise.

Brauer grew up on Long Island but didn’t learn to sail until she went to college in Hawaii. She traded in her goal of becoming a doctor for life on the water. But she quickly learned making a career as a sailor is extremely difficult, with professional racers often hesitant to welcome a 100-pound young woman on their team.

Even when she was trying to find sponsors for the Global Solo Challenge, she said a lot of people “wouldn’t touch her with a 10-foot pole” because they saw her as a “liability.”

Brauer’s message to the skeptics and naysayers? “Watch me.”

“I push so much harder when someone’s like, ‘No, you can’t do that,’ or ‘You’re too small,’” Brauer explained.

“The biggest asset is your mental strength, not the physical one,” Nannini said. “Cole is showing everyone that.”

Brauer hopes to continue competing professionally and is already eyeing another around-the-world competition, but not before she gets her hands on a croissant and cappuccino.

“My mouth is watering just thinking about that.”
