The 129.99ft  /39.62m  Westport 130 motor yacht  ‘Sea Bear’  was built in 2005 by Westport. Previously named Vita Bella, her stylish interior is by Pacific Custom Interiors and her exterior styling is by Gregory Marshall.

Sea Bear’s interior layout sleeps up to 10 guests in 5 rooms, including a master suite, 2 VIP staterooms and 2 twin cabins. She is also capable of carrying up to 7 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience. Timeless styling, beautiful furnishings and sumptuous seating feature throughout to create an elegant and comfortable atmosphere.

She has a cruising speed of 24 knots, and a maximum speed of 26 knots,  so combines performance with luxury perfectly.

This impressive yacht comes complete with a modern stabilization system to reduce roll motion even during rough seas, and the yacht also has ‘at anchor stabilizers’ to keep things smooth even at anchor/zero speed.

Sea Bear is a custom motor yacht launched in 1992 by Christensen and most recently refitted in 2009.

Christensen Shipyard has earned itself a position amongst the world's composite fibreglass construction leaders with its renowned custom and semi-custom superyachts. With a current fleet of yachts from 35 to 48m, the American company prides itself on achieving the finest quality and attention to detail in each of its megayachts.

Sea Bear measures 38.40 feet in length, with a max draft of 2.13 feet and a beam of 8.10 feet. She has a gross tonnage of 241 tonnes.

Motor yacht Sea Bear , launched by the US shipyard Westport in 2005 and belonging to golfing legend Jack Nicklaus, known also as “Golden Bear” will make her debut this April at Boat Asia 2012. The Westport 130 Sea Bear superyacht features naval architecture by William Garden and exterior design by Gregory C. Marshall Naval Architects .

The luxury yacht Sea Bear is a floating museum, which houses 36 unique pieces hand-selected by Jack and Barbara Nicklaus from the Jack Nicklaus Museum in Columbus, Ohio, as well as items personally donated from their home collection. The vessel comes courtesy of Boat Asia exhibitor KOP Group.

The Westport 130 superyacht Sea Bear’s main showcase piece measures 50 by 36 inches and is placed in the main saloon. Created by artist Pat Morell the piece is made of cherry and features bas-reliefs of all Jack Nicklaus’s major championship trophies, including the US Amateur. Sterling silver plates list the years, venues and scores associated with each victory. A centre plaque features an overview of Jack’s illustrious career, printed on parchment paper.

The news of the Sea Bear yacht’s involvement in this year’s boat show comes amidst numerous other exciting exhibitor signings including Vicem Yachts Turkey, Changi Sailing, Nansha Marina China, Yacht Haven Phuket, LOPE HK, X-tra, Lloyd Marine, Paul & Shark Yachting and Azurea Lifestyle. Also taking part will be Grady White, Chris Craft , MAN Engines, Suzuki Outboards and Seadoo, whilst Boat Asia stalwarts like Gulf Craft , Horizon Yachts and SG Boating, whose brands include Leopard Catamarans , Fairline , Chaparral, Robalo, and Meridian, will also feature prominently. The yacht trade is also well represented with yacht shipment experts Peters and May.

At the waterfront, Boat Asia 2012 will return with its highly popular Lifestyle concept, featuring prestigious brands such as Audi, Gaggenau and Mumm Champagne in addition to a wide range of on-land exhibitors from resort operators, charter companies, clothing and fashion brands, swimwear and sports and nautical watches.

Off-the-water activities will include car displays and test-drives, a nautical fashion and swimwear show at the waterfront promenade, jazz performances, wine and whisky tasting and an exclusive timepiece showcase.

Boat Asia 2012 this year have a special focus on the growing interest in luxury charters from corporations and private banks and will, for the first time, feature an exclusive luxury private yacht charter segment.

The event will also showcase the increasing use of “green” technologies in boat building and design. There will be some interesting products in this segment to reduce the carbon footprint for environmentally conscious boaters. The “green boats” on display will exhibit such innovations as solar films and panels, solar electric power and fuel cells.

Boat Asia 2012 takes place at Marina at Keppel Bay from 12-15th April 2012. Supported by the Singapore Tourism Board, Boat Asia is the showcase in Asia for luxury yachts up to 50 metres. This year, Boat Asia 2012 is expecting an anticipated crowd over 15,000 visitors and over 100 exhibits from the Asia-Pacific , Europe , US , Middle East , and China .

"Sea Bear"  is a great example of the very popular fast trawler Beneteau Swift Trawler 50. She came very well optioned with features like joystick docking (3 stations), Volvo digital anchor (great for waiting at locks, or setting up your lines and fenders before/after docking), a flybridge davit as well as a hydraulic swim platform. Historical Summary:

“Sea Bear”, built in 1932, was originally named “Forester” and was built for the US Forest Service Ranger Boat Fleet in Alaska, where she served from 1932-1964. As “Forester”, she plied SE Alaska waters for over 30 years, conducting patrols, rescues, and surveys. 

After leaving the Forest Service in 1964, she went into private ownership and was renamed “Sea Bear”, working first as part of a bear guiding operation and then as a timber skidder, all in SE Alaska. 

In 1969, Bill Clapp of Seattle took ownership and nurtured her back to her current state in his nearly 5 decades of ownership. Bill restored her, added a flybridge, made some alterations to the cabin, and installed a new engine (Sea Bear’s 3rd), after she sank tied up to the dock when Lake Washington froze during a cold-spell, bursting her raw seawater strainer. While homeported in Seattle, Sea Bear made many trips up to BC and Alaska. 

She has berths for 6, a daybunk in the wheelhouse, 2 heads, a shower, genset, reefer & freezer; a Dickinson oil stove, a freshwater maker and icemaker. With tankage for 800 hundred gallons of fuel, she cruises at 8 knots at 1350rpm, @7.5 gallons/hr. 

We bought her from Mr Clapp in 2018 and re-located her back to Alaska, motoring her up the Inside Passage and across the Gulf of Alaska to her current homeport of Cordova, Alaska. 

I was a career fisheries biologist with the US Forest Service and am now a commercial fisherman, both in Alaska. My wife Darcy is also a fisheries biologist with the US Forest Service and had worked on the last of the steel-hulled Ranger boats in SE Alaska. We both feel that it was fate that brought us to Sea Bear. 

We are caretakers more than boatowners. Designed by the famed boat builder H.C. Hanson, she has Purple Heart stem and Keel, 5 1/2″ thick Oak ribs on 13″ centers, and Douglas fir decks and planks. 

Sea Bear possesses a unique historical pedigree and is a living example of the highly skilled and refined, hand-built, artisan craft of Pacific Northwest wooden boatbuilding during the 1930’s. We feel honored to be part of her history.

When I am on her, I think of the journeys Sea Bear has made and the people she has brought together in her 89 years on the North Pacific Coast. 

In 11 years, Sea Bear will be 100 years old. We hope to be around for that, and hope to continue preserving her in the spirit of HC Hanson, the shipwrights past and present, and dedicated caretakers like Bill Clapp. 

One dream is to take Sea Bear through the Northwest Passage, up & over the top of Alaska and east through Canada and Greenland beyond. And then after, we hope to find the next caretaker who will usher Sea Bear into her second century on the water.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

Polar bear sleeping on tiny iceberg drifting in Arctic sea captured in heartbreaking photo

An image captured off the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard shows a young polar bear drifting to sleep on a small iceberg after carving a bed in the ice.

A heart-wrenching image captures a young polar bear napping on the melting scraps of a tiny, drifting iceberg.

British amateur photographer Nima Sarikhani captured the scene off the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, which sits deep inside the Arctic Circle, around 500 miles (800 kilometers) from the North Pole. The image was crowned the winner of this year's Wildlife Photographer of the Year People's Choice Award .

After three days of desperately searching for polar bears ( Ursus maritimus ) through thick fog, the expedition vessel that Sarikhani was on changed course and sailed southeast toward some sea ice. There, the crew spotted two polar bears — a younger and an older male. Just before midnight, as the ship hovered close to the bears, the younger one climbed onto a small iceberg and carved out a bed with his paws before drifting off to sleep. 

"This photograph has stirred strong emotions in many of those who have seen it," Sarikhani said in a statement shared with Live Science.

Members of the public voted "Ice Bed" as the competition winner from a shortlist of 25 images curated by a panel of judges and the Natural History Museum in London.

"Nima's heartbreaking and poignant image allows us to see the beauty and fragility of our planet," Douglas Gurr , director of the Natural History Museum, said in the statement. "His thought-provoking image is a stark reminder of the integral bond between an animal and its habitat and serves as a visual representation of the detrimental impacts of climate warming and habitat loss."

Climate change is considered the biggest threat to the survival of polar bears in the wild, as rising temperatures melt away the sea ice these animals depend on. An estimated 26,000 polar bears remain in the wild, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species , and they are considered vulnerable to extinction.

"Whilst climate change is the biggest challenge we face, I hope that this photograph also inspires hope," Sarikhani said. "There is still time to fix the mess we have caused."

The winning photograph will be displayed alongside four other "highly commended" images both online and in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition at the Natural History Museum until June 30. The shortlisted photographs can be seen below.
