13 Best Sport Fishing Yachts of 2023
- By Patrick Sciacca
- August 30, 2023
It is possible to fish from any type of boat, but a sportfishing yacht is purpose-built for angling aficionados to chase fish of all sizes and species, whether it’s fun fishing for mahi-mahi off the beach in South Florida or campaigning a pro-level crew from the Bahamas to Bermuda and back pursuing billfish during tournament season. The best sport-fishing yachts combine rugged, blue-water construction with performance, range, agile handling, and the comforts of luxury-yacht living. On the outside, sportfish yachts are notable for their dance-floor size cockpits for fish fighting; livewells to keep baits fresh; in-deck fish boxes to keep the catch stowed and cold; and an armada of rod holders for drift fishing, kite fishing or trolling. They also are known for big diesel horsepower and speed, sometimes north of 40-plus knots. Sportfish yachts are also known for luxurious interiors with supple leathers, granite countertops, high-end galley appliances and en suite staterooms. These are highly self-sufficient angling platforms geared for life beyond the horizon where the water is deep and the fish are big.
Top Luxury Fishing Boats
The following 13 sportfish yachts are all vessels we’ve reviewed. They are listed in no particular order.
- Hatteras GT65 Carolina : A customizable sportfish yacht with Caterpillar diesels
- Viking Yachts 64C : An eye-watering 42 knots of fish-chasing speed boat
- Royal Huisman Project 406 : The biggest sportfish yacht ever built
- Rybovich 94 : A superyacht-sized angler’s dream
- Viking 38 Open : A family-sized express sportfisherman loaded for offshore fishing
- Bertram 61 Convertible : A tournament-ready battlewagon with a distinct look
- Hatteras Yachts 45EX : Entry-level sportfish yacht with all the angling amenities of its larger siblings
- Huckins 45 Sportfisherman : Built for bluewater angling with the patented and sea-taming Quadraconic hull form
- Jarrett Bay 46 : A mid-size custom-Carolina sportfisherman with a yacht-level finish
- Viking Yachts 92 : Designed to travel the world’s oceans chasing behemoth billfish
- Merritt 72 : An iconic Florida boatbuilder’s high-end fishing boat
- Bertram 35 : This 35-foot flybridge sportfish pays homage to the builder’s legendary roots.
- Viking 54 Open : This express-style fish boat also comes in a Sport Tower and Coupe version
Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina
The Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina falls in the middle of the New Bern, North Carolina, boatbuilder’s three-model GT lineup, which also includes a GT59 and GT70 . This sportfish yacht has a solid-fiberglass hull bottom built for blue-water duty and comes with a variety of diesel engine options, which starts with twin 1,622 hp Caterpillar C-32A diesels.
Like all Hatteras GT models, the GT65 has notable bow flare to beat back tempestuous seas as well as a high freeboard to keep decks dry in the slop. The Hatteras GT65 also represent a design evolution for the series with a “stepped-back flybridge” an element found on in earlier Hatteras models, as well as a new window treatment and hull-side vents. With yacht-level luxury on the inside and a fishing-mission design on the outside, the Hatteras Yachts GT65 is a formidable sportfish boat.
Quick Specifications
Viking yachts 64c.
With its 180-square-foot, dance-floor-size, teak cockpit, options for a fighting chair or rocket launcher, a mezzanine perched perfectly for spotting prey in the spread and enough livewell space to keep a gaggle of goggle-eye baits frisky, the 42-knot Viking Yachts 64C is built for battle with big fish. Its impressive speed, which comes via optional 2,022 hp MTU M96X V-12 diesels , ensures that the Viking 64C is likely to be first boat with lines in the water. Cruise speed: 36 knots at 80 percent engine load. (Base powerplants are twin 1,550 hp MAN V-12 diesels.) For the traveling tournament crew, the Viking 64C has four staterooms, including three en suite guest staterooms, plus a crew cabin with upper and lower bunks.
Royal Huisman Project 406
A 171-foot sportfisherman? Yes. That’s exactly what the six-deck, Royal Huisman’s Project 406 is. The interior and exterior design of Project 406 is from noted Dutch yacht-design firm Vripack . Vripack calls the vessel a “sportfisher on steroids.” The hull and superstructure of the supersize sportfish is Alustar aluminum, a material known for its strength and relatively light weight.
Even with six decks, Vripack has managed to create sleek lines for Project 406. It starts with a high freeboard forward that seemingly dares the ocean to approach. Transitioning from the bow, the sheerline slopes downwards in a steady cadence. The flowing sheerline resolves seamlessly at the cockpit. The vessel’s raked house and stacked deck are juxtaposed against the long profile, creating a sinewy aesthetic, which is no simple feat in this 171-footer. Add in all of the expected angling accouterments and 30-knot speed, and you have a sportfish yacht ready to chase fish around the world.
Rybovich 94
Size, speed and agility is a unique trifecta in a sportfish boat, but the 94-foot, 41-knot III Amigos from Michael Rybovich checks all those boxes as well as a few more too. The sportfish boat , designed by Patrick Knowles with naval architecture from Dusty Rybovich, is built in cold-molded mahogany. Prop pockets help keep the boat’s half-load draft down to a Bahamas-friendly 5 feet. The Rybovich 94’s impressive speed is helped by a pair of beefy 2,600 hp MTU diesels .
The owner of II Amigos also owns a 196-foot Feadship superyacht and, while he wanted the sportfish to be all business on the outside, he wanted luxury-yacht finishes on the inside. “Subtle but telling touches are the solid doors to the staterooms; each mimics the owner’s Feadship with ¾-inch thickness. The doors close flush (each has hidden hinges), and the sound is of a Rolls-Royce door closing.”
Viking Yachts 38 Open Billfish
The Viking Yachts 38 Open Billfish is the builder’s entry point to its diesel-propelled sportfish boats. An owner-operator-size angling platform, the 38 Open is powered with twin 550 hp Cummins QSB6.7 diesels, which gives the sportfish boat 36-knot speed. Notable angling features on board the 38 Open include a 109-swqure-foot cockpit, complete with a mezzanine seating flanking the centerline stairs to the bridge deck as well as a laminated backing plate foe either a fighting chair or a rocket launcher. For overnight canyon trips, there is a forepeak stateroom with a double bunk as well as a single above it. Additionally, the salon’s sofa converts to a berth for guests or crew. The galley is outfitted with Corian countertops, two-burner electric cooktop, microwave/convection oven and drawer-style refrigerators and freezers. Some options include a Palm Beach Towers tuna tower and electronics packages from Atlantic Marine Electronics , both are Viking Yachts’ subsidiaries.
Bertram 61 Convertible
Bertram’s 61 Convertible leads the builder’s offshore series, which also includes a 35 Convertible and the express-style 50 Sport . Like its 50 Sport sistership, the 61 Convertible has a stepped sheerline, a nod to the legendary boatbuilder’s earlier designs. It also creates an instantly recognizable profile. The 61 Convertible is ready to run out of the box thanks to its twin 1,925 hp Caterpillar C-32A diesels. Top hop is 44 knots.
When it comes to chasing fish, the 61 Convertible has 188 square feet of fish-fighting space. A 100-gallon in-transom livewell is accompanied by twin in-sole fish boxes as well as rod stowage to port and starboard. A tuna door to starboard makes bringing in that bigeye on board a breeze. (Fish not included.) The accommodations layout belowdecks includes three staterooms. There is a full-beam master stateroom amidships.
Hatteras Yachts GT45X
The Hatteras Yachts GT45X express sports twin 1,150-horsepower Cat C18 ACERT diesel engines that deliver 40-plus-knot speeds. During our sea trial, the GT45X showcased remarkable handling, gracefully leaning into turns without any loss of power from the props. Hatteras has equipped the GT45X with a custom-engineered, sound-deadening system. This feature reduces noise and vibration, ensuring a relatively quiet ride for all aboard. Inside, the yacht has a luxe sensibility with its wood sole, sumptuous leather seating, a fully equipped galley and a spacious forward stateroom. On deck, there are two comfortable helm seats, an undercounter fridge, an ice maker, an inviting L-shaped settee and a table, creating the perfect entertainment area for relaxing after a successful day of fishing. The integrated hardtop enhances visibility with its one-piece windshield and large side windows, offering optimal views of the surrounding waters. To adapt to changing weather conditions, simply install clear curtains across the bridge deck aft, transforming the GT45X into an all-season sport-fisherman. Personalization is key with Hatteras Yachts, and the GT45X offers a variety of optional features. From a bow thruster and additional stateroom to teak accents and a flybridge option, you can customize your yacht to meet your specific needs. With a simple ala carte ordering process, just select your must-have options, start the engines and have your next angling adventure.
Huckins 45 Sportfisherman
The Huckins 45 Sportfisherman starts with the Florida boatbuilder’s patented Quadraconic hull . The Huckins’ Quadraconic name derives from four conical projections that make up the bottom surface shape. The sport-fisher has a deep forefoot and some measurable flare above the waterline for good buoyancy and dry running. A single chine rises from the waterline and then descends quickly to optimize spray control. The deep-V shape forward warps to a flat running surface far aft for efficient planing and excellent roll resistance.
Power is twin 480 hp Cummins diesels, which give this sportfish boat an easy 28-knot cruise. Top speed is 35 knots, so a 30-knot cruise is easily an option. The owner of the 45 Sportfisherman we got aboard is an avid stand-up angler and set up his boat with three flush-deck insulated fish boxes with macerators, a Dometic ice maker, two 28-foot Rupp outriggers, six gunwale rod holders, saltwater and freshwater washdowns, and a four-rod rocket launcher in lieu of a fighting chair.
Jarrett Bay 46
Originally named Persistence, this Jarrett Bay 46 was built for fishing enthusiast and NASCAR driver Jeff Burton. When creating his fully custom sportfish boat, Burton noted that his vessel would be both a fishing boat and a family boat. Fishing features include an in-transom fish box, a sailfish pod, insulated fish boxes and a tuna door (sans bridge) in the cockpit. Jarrett Bay installed three rod holders in each gunwale and six more across the flybridge rail, plenty of rod room for setting up a trolling spread. With upper and lower helm stations (the latter being an owner request), the Jarrett Bay 46 also gives the skipper options if the weather goes south. The Jarrett Bay 46 has ZF pod drives with underwater exhaust paired to twin 575 hp Caterpillar C9 diesels. At a comfortable 2,000-rpm cruise, this sport-fisher makes about 26 knots while those diesels consume 41 gallons per hour. Dial it up to a top-end speed of 35 knots and consumption goes up to 58.3 gph.
Viking Yachts 92
The Viking Yachts 92 is the largest sport-fisher the New Gretna, New Jersey-based boatbuilder has ever constructed. Offered with an open- or enclosed-bridge setup, the hefty sportfish boat (displacing around 205,000 pounds) hits 37-knots-plus when powered with optional 2,600 hp MTU diesels. At 2,100 rpm, this battlewagon cruises easily at 31 knots at 78 percent engine load. Dial it back to 28 knots, and engine load is a mere 70 percent. The 92-footer is also agile thanks to the Viking Independent Programmable Electrohydraulic Rudder (VIPER) steering system, a fly-by-wire setup that lets the helmsman control each rudder individually.
From an angling perspective, the 92 has 55-foot Rupp outriggers , fish stowage large enough for a wolf pack of bigeye tuna, space for a season’s worth of baits, secured gaff stowage and enough tackle drawers to handle all the lures and terminal gear an owner could ever buy. The Viking 92 also has six staterooms to accommodate owners, guests and crew for tournament season and long-haul adventure angling.
Like some of the other names on this list, Merritt is an iconic Pompano Beach, Florida-based, custom sportfish builder with a current model lineup that includes 66-, 72- and 86-foot convertible designs. The Merritt 72 is a model that has stood the test of time, and one that owners flock to year in and year out, for its fishability, seakindly nature and the ability to tailor the layout to an owner’s angling needs.
Because these boats are custom-built, the specifics can change from one 72 to another, but 30-knot cruise speeds and nearly 40-knot top-end speeds are common in all 72s, as are massive cockpits for fighting Hemingway-worthy marlin, stout construction for chasing those fish in the blue water and superyacht-level finishes inside and outside.
The entry point into Bertram’s three-model Offshore Series⎯spanning from 35 to 61 feet length overall⎯the Bertram 35 blends a familiar profile with modern power and technology to create a 36-knot angling juggernaut. This owner-operator-sized, Michael Peters -penned, flybridge sport-fisher starts with a wave-slicing, deep-V hull form with 22 degrees transom deadrise. The form is supported by a solid fiberglass hull bottom with cored hull sides for added strength without added weight.
The 35 has a 126-square-foot cockpit ready for any fish-fighting fanatic. Bertram sets up the 35 with rod holders, a livewell, in-deck fish boxes, and a transom door for the big ones. Optional teak decking and covering boards add a custom look. Inside, the salon is accented with teak and maple Amtico soles and overhead dimmer lighting. A wainscot-style ceiling houses rod stowage for big-game gear. Power is twin 500 hp Caterpillar C7.1 diesels matched to ZF drives. At a comfortable 27.5-knot cruise at just 68 percent engine load, the Bertram 35 has a 253-nautical-mile range, making it easily canyon-capable.
Viking Yachts 54 Open
Many anglers like open- or express-style sportfish designs as they enable the captain and crew to keep in close proximity, and the Viking 54 Open , which also is offered in a Sport Coupe or Sport Tower, does just that. The 54 Open’s bridge deck has a Palm Beach-style helm on centerline, flanked by a double-wide companion seat to port and a single seat to starboard. Abaft the helm and to port is U-shaped seating with a walnut table, creating a respite from the sun on tournament day while still allowing the crew to keep an eye on the spread via the open after bulkhead. Across from that seating is an L-shaped settee.
With a focus on fishing, the 54 Open has 154 square feet of cockpit real estate. Two sets of mezzanine seats offer perches for the crew to watch the spread. Other fishing-friendly features include a transom livewell, an in-deck fish box to starboard (with an optional livewell tub), an insulated in-deck box to port, a deck plate for mounting a rocket launcher or fighting chair, cooler stowage in the mezzanine steps (a bait freezer in the steps is optional), and a tuna door. Power is either twin 1,400 hp or 1,550 hp MAN diesels. For owners who prefer a three-sided fiberglass enclosure to a clear-plastic setup—but still want an open after bulkhead—Viking offers the 54 in the Sport Tower version. The 54 Sport Coupe model closes the after bulkhead, completely protecting the bridge deck from the elements.

Why Choose a Sportsfish Yacht?
Avid fishermen, anglers and fishing enthusiasts should consider a sportsfish yacht if that is the sole purpose of the vessel. Whether it will be used for recreational fishing activities with your family and friends or world-class fishing tournaments for big prizes and bigger accolades, if you plan to be on the water exclusively to drop a line, a sportsfish yacht is the way to go.
Sportsfish yachts are outfitted with all the amenities needed for fishing, from outriggers and towers to live wells and fighting chairs, fish lockers and freezers and, of course, copious rod holders. But these yachts aren’t all fishing and no-frills. Depending on the size, many sportsfish yachts also feature main salons, galleys, staterooms and all of the amenities found on a motor yacht, with the added bonus of the fishing kit.
Sportsfish yachts are sometimes owned in tandem with larger motor yachts or superyachts as an added amenity, with the sole purpose of casting a line and reeling in the big one.

Top 5 Sportfish Yacht Brands [Buyer’s Guide]
The best sportfish yachts for sale..
Travel further and faster with a sportfish yacht . These unmistakable boats are built with purpose. Fishing enthusiasts enjoy the amenities and speed packed into a single machine, while families enjoy the comforts of a much larger yacht.
Sportfish boats can range in price from as low as $90,000 to upwards of a few million — it depends on the year, size, model, and amenities. If you’re in the market for a new or used sportfish yacht , simply choosing a brand can be overwhelming. We narrowed down the top 5 sportfish brands and examples of yachts for sale with Denison.
1. Bertram Yachts
Bertram sportfish yachts are legends in the marine industry. Their business history began over 60 years ago when the 31 Bertram won the Miami to Nassau Offshore Race. That boat and her performance set the stage for Bertram’s continued success and reputation. Today, Bertram boats are the result of state-of-the-art construction techniques, incorporating vacuum resin-infused composite construction.
Bertram delivers unmatched performance and luxury while still delivering a tournament-winning fishability. For example, the new Bertram 61 , which revolutionized the deep-V hull. This hardcore fishing machine is constructed using cutting-edge composite materials; it incorporates the raised deck and stepped shear of the past with present day elements for a unique look that is all Bertram. And the ride is better than ever.
2. Viking Yachts
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions the word ‘Viking’? Scandinavian seafaring warriors… and the New Jersey-based boat brand. Viking Yachts was founded by brothers Bob and Bill Healey in 1964. The business soon become a leader in semi-custom fiberglass yacht production with over 4,000 Viking sportfish and motor yachts delivered. Viking’s highly regarded seafaring reputation is rooted in its commitment to producing 90 percent of the boat in-house.
Viking sportfish yachts are characterized by their massive presence and deep-V hull. Like NINA MARIE , an 82’ Viking 2010. Her 5 stateroom, 6 head layout has the interior volume of a much larger motor yacht, yet the seakeeping ability of a Viking sportfish. This used Viking yacht for sale is powered by twin MTU M93 16V2000 2400HP with just 1800 hours.
3. Hatteras Yachts
When your slogan is “experience life without limits” then you’ve caught our attention. Hatteras sportfish yachts are designed and built to offer an unmatched boating experience. The business began in 1959 in North Carolina, when founder and marlin fisherman Willis Slane envisioned a fishing vessel that could withstand the unforgiving waters off Cape Hatteras.
In 1960, the company introduced the Hatteras 41 Convertible, the first all-fiberglass sportfishing boat available in the 40-foot range. What followed were continuous innovations and a remarkable legacy of superior craftsmanship, engineering, and attention to detail that remain the brand’s hallmarks sixty years later.
Hatteras sportfish yachts – such as JUST LIKE THAT , a 70’ Hatteras 1999 – offer plenty of outriggers, rod holders, storage, and spacious lounge areas. This used Hatteras for sale features an aft cockpit that’s a fisherman’s dream with a molded-in transom fish box, updated refrigerator/freezer plates, fresh/salt water wash downs, rod holders, and built in step boxes. The Hatteras modified-V hull delivers a sharp entry and a stable ride. No pounding here.
4. Merritt Yachts
Merritt’s Boat and Engine Works is a family-owned and operated business that started in 1948. The yard is located in Pompano Beach, Florida, and has gained a reputation for high-quality work and friendly customer service. The first boats built by Merritt were strictly for catching tuna. But they lacked creature comforts. With enhancements over the years, the small mom-and-pop business became known for building all-around outstanding boats.
EL CHUPACABRA is an 80-foot Merritt built in 2006 that boasts a high-quality composite construction and exceptional craftsmanship. Her unmistakable profile is bound to attract attention on the water as she’s powered by MTU M91 16V2000 engines. Run, don’t walk to this opportunity to own a classic Merritt sportfish .
5. Cheoy Lee
Cheoy Lee is backed by five generations of shipbuilding expertise. The company began in Hong Kong in 1936 building merchant sailing vessels during World War II. By the 1950s, the Cheoy Lee began building motor yachts while embracing the latest technological advances. Today, the company builds semi-custom yachts for owners who value performance, innovation, quality, and service.
FOUR ACRES , a 70’ Cheoy Lee 1988, remains one of the more aggressively styled big sportfishing yachts in the late-model marketplace. The ride is soft and dry as she’s built on a double-V bottom and Carolina flare bow. The accommodations of the boat rival those of a good-sized motor yacht thanks to an impressive 20-foot beam. This used sportfish for sale is available with Denison.
Whether you’re a first-time buyer or veteran boat owner, a sportfish is an exciting purchase. You’ll gain access to a different world of boating and fishing thanks to advanced technology, amenities, and performance. Contact a Denison yacht broker to find your next sportfish yacht.

What Is The Best Sport Fishing Boat?
By Rob Bowman | Posted On Dec 27, 2020 Updated On Jul 13, 2023
"That's a loaded question." That was a common response when I started talking with United Yacht Sales brokers about what makes the best sport fishing boat and who builds it. The answers I received differed greatly, varying as a result of the experiences of the broker who had fished tournaments on particular boats, been a sportfish owner themselves, some had friendships with particular shipyards, or had previously been a captain for a sportfish owner. No matter what the interviewee's background, two things were very clear from the beginning of these conversations. One, everyone was resolute in their opinions and firmly believed that they were right. And two, there really is no best sportfishing yacht out there, but rather only the right sportfish for your particular fishing and cruising goals.
Whether or not you can determine what the best sport fishing boat is vastly depends on your opinions and tastes. Do you prefer a convertible, open express, or an enclosed bridge sportfish? Would you rather build your own custom sportfish or purchase a semi-custom production boat? Do you plan on competing in tournaments or recreationally fish with family and friends? How important are the interior living spaces and accommodations to you? And to add even more complexity to the decision, there are several luxury center-console builders who have built some incredible boats over the past several years, complete with cabins, that could easily rival a sportfish.
If you have a hundred people at a boat show "What is the best sportfishing boat made today?", you'll likely get a hundred different answers. The best advice I can give is to have a conversation with a professional yacht broker who is familiar with the different custom boat shipyards, the production sportfish builders, the current brokerage market, and has the experience running many of these different boats. United has over 175 yacht brokers worldwide and our headquarters can connect you with the perfect one that specializes in exactly what you're trying to accomplish. Call us to get started today at 1-772-463-3131 or simply fill out the form on this page .
United Yacht Broker: Greg Graham
Best Sportfishing Boat: Merritt 72' and F&S 45' for different applications. Seen below: "PISCES V", the 45' F&S.
As an avid angler around the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, FL since the early 80's, Greg knows what it takes to compete in the South Florida tournament circuit. While he's not out selling everything from a 136' Horizon to a 76' Mark Willis Custom Sportfish , Greg manages two sportfish boats including a 72' Merritt and a 45' F&S. "The owner of these boats literally told me to go out and find him the perfect sportfish and I knew exactly what to get," remarked Greg. "The Merritt Yacht was built for world traveling and sleeps 9 people comfortably," he continued. "You have redundant systems throughout, two water-makers, two ice-makers, a dive compressor, and a lot more. Merritt builds an incredible custom boat."
"I call the 45' F&S 'The Ferrari' of sportfish," said Greg. "This boat was designed and built for sailfish tournaments close to home. It's a walk-around style and has both a Seakeeper 9 and a 6 live-well setup." Yes, you read that correctly, 6 live-wells in a 45-footer.
United Yacht Broker: Mordy Miltz
Best Sport Fishing Boat: Garlington 61, Viking 64, and Bayliss 62 (Who said you had to choose just one?)
"Hands down, nothing rides out like a custom boat such as Garlington , Bayliss , Jarrett Bay , or a Spencer," said Mordy Miltz. "But for those owners that don't want the maintenance of a cold-molded boat, Viking Yachts would be the go-to for many reasons including consistency in the business, construction, and resale." An avid angler since the age of 19 and owner of a fishing supply company in the Northeast, Mordy got his experience fishing many of the most prestigious tournaments including the Mid-Atlantic 500, the White Marlin Open, and others. His current 46' Winter listing " FAMILY CIRCUS " is one of the hottest custom boats available on the market right now. Mordy listed his personal picks for the best sport fishing boat below:
- Garlington Yachts 61 - "I love this boat because it is the best riding sportfish out there, in my opinion. It's an incredibly sought-after boat in its class and is almost impossible to find it under $2 million ."
- Viking 64 - "The Viking 64 is very roomy with either 3 or 4 stateroom configurations, (optional) CAT power, has great fish-ability, and versatility. You can fish tournaments or do a family cruising trip from the Caribbean to Nantucket and back, if you wanted."
- Bayliss Boatworks 62 - "Bayliss is known for his world renown style in addition to his stunning fit and finish. He consistently produces the nicest sportfishing yachts year after year but when you meet him in person you just want to do business with him. In addition to build yachts, he also offers a full service and refit boatyard with the expertise of his builders. I had fuel issues while delivering a custom yacht that I sold a client and called him on his cell asking for his services and sent guys down there within minutes. You really can’t beat the service."

United Yacht Broker: Steve Castellini
Best Sport Fishing Boat: American Custom Yachts 63 or Hatteras GT70
Steve Castellini knows production and custom sportfishing boats. In fact, he's proven himself time and time again with over 30 tournament wins including the opening year of the Mid-Atlantic 500. He's also fished Morehead City for giant Bluefin Tuna which he landed a triple header of giants including one at 700+ lbs. and two more in the 600 lbs. range. His knowledge and hands-on experience make him an excellent source of information for choosing the best sportfish.
"As for custom sportfish, from my personal experience I would say American Custom Yachts," said Steve. "First, you have to love the name American. Secondly, their quality of build, finish work, and performance is first class. There is beautiful styling and innovative ideas in each vessel that they build. These custom sportfish are built to fit the owners needs, particularly how they may travel and fish.
"I recall several years ago I had a client survey the 63 American 1995 called "Glory", he continued. "I was very impressed on how well she was built and maintained. To top that our sea trial was conducted out of St Lucie Inlet during a blow of 30-40kts of wind. Seas were definitely 6-10' and this boat rode around like a sports car eating it up. It was mind boggling. The captain did an amazing job at the helm showing off how well the 63 ACY ran in each direction of sea. A survey I will never forget!"
"For production boats I would say the Hatteras GT70 would rival any vessel in the water. It includes a 5-stateroom and 4-head layout with a massive salon. Outfitted with a Pipewelders tournament tower and High Seas tournament electronics package, Seakeeper, mezzanine and gigantic flybridge, this rig is exceptionally comfortable to travel and tournament fish. I recall fishing the MA500 a few years ago and told the Captain is was time to get going if we wanted to reach our spot 100 miles away before lines in. He told me to relax as we watched numerous 60-70’ tournament contenders turn around after attempting to go offshore. We left on Hatterascal pointed the bow into the northeast sea of 6’ plus and rode along at 33kts for 3 hours making it before lines in. Totally impressive all day long!"
United Yacht Broker: John Blumenthal
Best Sportfishing Boat: Too Many To List! John has a different take on the subject. See below.
John's love for fishing has taken him around the world as a professional crewman and captain on marlin boats, particularly on the Great Barrier Reef. Now John has spent the last 15 years helping his clients buy and sell sportfishing boats for all different kinds of applications. John recently sold NO AGENDA , a 2018 Michael Rybovich & Sons 73, and currently has EURYBIA listed, a Jim Smith 60'. John has a different take on the answer to the question of what is the best sportfish and said his choices were "vast these days".
"Design and technology has allowed boat builders to create the best sportfishing vessels in all classes including high-end center consoles , production, and custom sportfish," he said. "There seems to be a "standard of features" buyers look for in a vessel and most are fitted-out perfectly with a Mezzanine, Omni Sonar, Seakeeper, Water-Maker, Slushy Ice Machine, and the latest technology in electronics."
"It’s important to show my clients the efficiency of a vessel in speed and economy, stability and seakeeping ability. The vessel must be able to handle all types of conditions, whether you are in the traveling or fishing mode. Let’s not forget the cockpit, aka our “work station”, where all the action happens. This area needs to be well laid-out for anglers and crew to go to battle. At the end of the day there are so many vessels to choose from. Do yourself a favor and “hook up” with a yacht broker that has had the first-hand experience and one you can trust to guide you to find the perfect vessel."

Best Sportfishing Boats for Summer 2022
Apr 4, 2022
The best sportfishing boats will differ for each individual based on their fishing and cruising objectives. You should also consider whether you want to participate in tournaments or just go fishing for fun. We compiled four of the best boats on the market based on reviews, trusted opinions, and overall best-sellers. Each of these will have distinct features and an overall appearance that is unique to them.
Viking 54 and 61 Convertible
A Viking Yacht is a classic staple in the sportfishing world. They are easily identified by their hull design and elegant appearance. Both of these sizes provide more space than any other boat in their class, with an open cockpit and can be outfitted with custom towers. The 54C is a luxury fishing boat with three staterooms and two heads below decks. A Viking Flybridge is a place where design is constantly being tweaked to improve operator comfortability, fish-ability, and guest convenience. 360-degree visibility is provided by a streamlined walk-around center console. The cockpit of the 54C is 154 square feet, while the cockpit of the 61C is 172 square feet, which is slightly larger. Take a look at our Viking 54 Convertible and Viking 61 to see how the layout differs between the two.
Jarrett Bay 46
A sport fisher that is low on fuel and known for being easy to handle earned this model a spot on the list of best boats. Jarrett Bay takes pride in the fact that its boats are built with superior craftsmanship, “Our build method not only produces a stronger boat but also one that’s as much as 30% lighter than other sportfishing boats,” says the manufacturer (jarrettbay.com). The easier it is to navigate the waves, the more fuel you save and the more money you have for fishing gear. The attention to detail when selecting their custom interior features is one of its most marketable features.
Hatteras GT65 Carolina
The overall design of the steeped-back bridge, all-new window design, and hull-side vents combine luxury and practicality. This boat is outfitted with cutting-edge technology, making it capable of overcoming any challenges thrown its way by the sea. From the flybridge or the helm, you can see for miles, providing excellent coverage of the open ocean. The interior of this boat is entirely up to you to design and engineer to suit your needs, ensuring its performance even further. If you want to spend more money on a more elegant feel inside your sportfisher, the Hatteras is a great option.
(Source: Kusler Yachts)
Bayliss 68 Uno Mas
When comparing this boat to the others, it is clear that the Carolina flare is not present in this build. The curved deckhouse and bridge complement the modern touches on this traditional-style boat. Bayliss still prefers wood as a building material over competitors’ cold-molded wood or foam-core fiberglass. The Uno Mas was built with tournaments in mind and with that goal in mind throughout the entire construction process. The interior of this boat is luxuriously designed, so there is no room for compromise. Because this is the longest boat we’ve mentioned, it has a larger cabin layout in the lower levels.

9 Massive Sportfishing Boats That Double as Luxe Superyachts

There was a time not so long ago that a 50- or 60-foot convertible would have been the biggest sportfish in the marina. But times have changed, and in the place of those trusty battlewagons of yore has emerged a class of fishing boats that are their own subsect of the superyacht category.
Whether they’re built by semi-production giants, small-town custom builders, or as one-off projects by superyacht yards, these boats are designed to do one thing: catch monster fish. While most have the conventional shape—a long forefoot, tuna tower for sighting schools of fish or birds that are feeding on them, and the fighting chair in the cockpit—others are deviating into new territory.
Vanquish has a new 80-footer, with a plumb bow and cruiser-like profile, that has been modified as a serious sportfishing machine, while Royal Huisman is taking the concept into extreme superyacht territory with its 171-footer that’s a six-deck superyacht shaped like a huge convertible. This category is morphing somewhat with these new designs, but for the most part, the changes are more about luxurious interiors and better technology in the engine rooms.
Have a look at our list of the biggest and baddest luxury sportfishermen, plus one pint-sized classic thrown in for balance.
Viking is the leader of the semi-production sportfish market and its latest boat shows why. This new 90C flagship replaced a larger 92-footer so it could avoid the Tier III regulations that impacted the 92C. But the beauty is that this boat has the same size cockpit as the 92-footer and the same interior layouts, which include megayacht touches like a standard underlit Lumix bartop in the salon. This Viking has a top end of about 40 knots, and the company is looking to break that barrier as newer engines become available.
Jim Smith Tournament Boats 86
This beautiful convertible, named Gina Lisa, has a cold-molded wood hull penned by the world-famous naval architect Donald L. Blount and Associates. The hull is constructed out of mahogany while composite materials are used elsewhere. The 86 features a five-stateroom, five-head layout that means the crew will have some privacy while on the tournament trail. Cruise speed is said to be in the mid-30-knot range, a very respectable gallop for vessel that displaces 125,000 pounds.
‘Lanakai’ 130
From New Zealand’s Yachting Developments comes this monster of a sportfish. The 129-foot, all-carbon Lanakai is every bit a megayacht, albeit one with tuna and billfish in mind. Case in point, the massive, 59-foot-long Rupp outriggers give this yacht’s bait a formidable spread. Lanakai also has 6,300 hp powerplants, which helps it see speeds in the mid-30-knot range. The owner, who is on his fourth Yachting Developments hull, uses this boat, too. In his first 15 months aboard Lanakai logged 8,500 nautical miles.
Spencer 74 Centurion
Spencer Yachts builds its cold-molded vessels in tiny Wanchese, N.C., right in the heart of the Carolina custom sportfish world. Despite turning just a handful of boats each year, a Spencer 64 was the league leader in the 2022 Sport Fishing Championship. This 74 Centurion is the builder’s 100th hull. With twin 2,600 hp MTU V16 M96s, the 70 can top out at a very fast 44 knots while running at a 37-knot cruise. Its transom is done in carbon fiber.
Rybovich 62
This may not be the largest yacht on this list, but what’s lacking in size is made up for in pedigree, and arguably the most classic convertible lines in this group. Michael Rybovich & Sons in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, is one of the most recognizable names in all of yachting, with a history dating back to 1919. The 62 has a glass windshield that provides excellent natural light and good views in the cockpit—an uncommon feature for serious sportfishing boats. An aft galley arrangement will come in handy when frying up all the mahi this 62 is sure to land. And of course, there is the cockpit, which is designed for boating blue marlin.
Vripack 171
This 171-foot behemoth from Dutch naval architect Vripack in conjunction with Dutch yard Royal Huisman will hold the title of world’s largest sportfish when it launches. Thanks to clever design, this six-deck megayacht still holds true to the basic exterior lines of a sportfishing convertible. The designers said they were aiming for a penthouse aesthetic with the interior, and many of the decks are designed for optimal viewing of the fish-fighting action happening below. The hull and superstructure are made of aluminum. Vripack execs have described it as a “sportfish on steroids.”
Jarrett Bay 90
The 90-foot from Beaufort, North Carolina’s, Jarrett Bay Boatworks —a heavyweight in the Carolina-custom world—is notable for its advanced infusion and lamination techniques in the decks and superstructure. These construction methods were put into place to save weight, resulting in a faster top end and increased fuel efficiency. The cold-molded hull should provide a soft ride. That’s extra important for this boat, which will have a leggy range owing to a 4,000-gallon fuel tank.
Vanquish VQ80
This VQ80 from Dutch dayboat builder Vanquish is a bit of a surprise because of its lines, which are more like a contemporary cruisers. But it’s a formidable steed for anglers, nonetheless. Conceived as a chase boat for a Heesen megayacht, the Guido de Groot design has a sizzling top end of more than 50 knots. As for creature comforts, the vessel has three staterooms and two heads—not lavish for an 80-footer but one has to assume the owner will likely sleep on the mothership. Will it start a new design for sportfish builders? Hardly likely, but it’s nice to see a new profile fishing the canyons.
Bertram 35FB
Bertram has always proved that a sportfisherman doesn’t need a megayacht-sized vessel to catch pelagics. Modeled on the Bertram 31, one of the most iconic powerboats ever, the Bertram 35 recaptures that classic boat’s magic with its modern hull and engines. Even at 35 feet, it has a workable cockpit for fighting fish, and flybridge helm for spotting them. The Bertram also has lines that harken back to its predecessor, meaning that wherever the boat pulls into port, it is sure to draw admirers. Most of the 35s are built at Bertram’s headquarters in Tampa, but it will also be built in Italy, though in smaller quantities.

16 Yacht Charters That Make for a Strangely Affordable Family Vacation
Posted: December 11, 2023 | Last updated: December 12, 2023
While a yacht may be the first thing that pops to mind when you think of the ultra-wealthy, chartering one might not be as expensive as you think. When you're splitting the costs between several family members or friends you are paying for transportation and stay and it can make sense financially.
You can also keep money in your wallet by selecting an older vessel or taking charge of sailing yourself (hiring a crew always costs extra).
So let’s take a look at options that may be within reach for people who aren’t living paycheck to paycheck but aren’t brunching with the Kardashians either.
Editor's note: prices are subject to change and may vary depending on the time of the year.

San Antonio motor yacht
The San Antonio is a luxury motor yacht measuring 146 feet in length that was built in 2018. This huge vessel is capable of accommodating 36 guests in 18 cabins.
The cost to charter it starts at $21,000 per week plus expenses, not including a crew of eight (which we recommend).
Divide the cost by capacity, and that’s only $583 per person per week to start. That’s practically unbeatable for a boat of this size, allowing you to make other savvy moves with your money .

Virginia Mia motor yacht
Constructed in 2001 (with several subsequent refits), the Virginia Mia is another luxury motor yacht that’s 95 feet in length.
Custom-designed by Nuvolari Lenard, this vessel can sleep eight guests in four cabins as well as an additional crew of four.
Still, thanks to the age of the yacht, the cost of chartering starts at $15,000 plus expenses per week, or just under $2,000 per guest sans crew.
Nautilus sailing yacht
White motor yachts are convenient and luxe, sailing yachts promise a more traditional experience.
At nearly 125 feet, the Nautilus is a large option styled by Robert Delus. Built in 2008, it sleeps 10 guests in five cabins. At this size, you'll likely need a crew of six.
The cost to charter this beauty starts at $17,500 per week sans expenses, again just under $2,000 per person — which really isn't bad for all you're getting.

Aegean Clipper sailing yacht
The Aegean Clipper is another sailing vessel, this one built all the way back in 1999 — which translates into cost savings for you.
The yacht is another biggie at nearly 135 feet. With 11 cabins, the boat can accommodate up to 24 guests plus five crew members as needed.
In total, your group will have to shell out a minimum of $13,000 plus expenses per week — just over $379 per person. That's a great deal, comparatively speaking.
Silver Fox expedition yacht
If you're looking for something a little smaller that can go the distance, the Silver Fox expedition yacht might be for you.
Built in 2009, the 72-foot yacht accommodates six guests in three cabins for a more intimate experience. There's room for a crew of two if you need their expertise.
With a starting cost of $16,500 per week, the Silver Fox will run each person over $2,700 per week, but the small group may be worth it.
Tivoli expedition yacht
Traveling with a group of the same size but want more length and a bigger crew?
The Tivoli expedition yacht, constructed in 2001 and remodeled in 2010, can fit four crew members. This stunner is just over 90 feet long and can take you on those long hauls.
Yes, it will cost more at $25,000 per week, or over $4,100 per person. But if you can afford it, it’s a dream come true out on the open water.

Shangri-La classic yacht
Classics are classics for a reason, as they stand the test of time. Such is the case with the Shangri-La, a vintage yacht sure to take you to that magical place.
This vessel sleeps six in three cabins and promises to be child-friendly. The Shangri-La was constructed way back in 1965, and it is 82 feet long with space for three crew members.
A week on this rig will cost you $16,500, or just over $2,700 a pop.
Sai Kung classic yacht
Another vintage beauty, the Sai Kung classic yacht was born in 1975 and got a makeover in 2015. That updated this 79-foot vessel that can sleep nine people in four cabins.
Be sure you’re a nautical whiz, as there’s no room for additional crew here, but that will only save you money.
All told, the Sai Kung will set your group back $17,500 per week, just under $2,000 per person.
Glorious open yacht
Outdoor yachts are designed for those who truly want to live outside, which you can do easily on the Glorious.
This sporty 72-footer is ready to help you dive, scuba, and more, with room for six guests in three cabins. You can bring a crew of two for extra help, of course.
Built in 2007 and remodeled nine years later, chartering the Glorious will run you $16,500 per week, again $2,700 per person.

Speedy T open yacht
Looking for a bigger open yacht that’s perfect for swim buffs? Charter the Speedy T, a vessel that’s 80 feet long and primed for dips in refreshing ocean waters.
Like many of the yachts on this list, it accommodates six guests in three cabins and has room for three crew members.
All told, one week on this sleek ship — built in 1994 and renovated in 2011 — is $19,500 before expenses, translating to $3,250 per head. But the adventure promises to be unforgettable.
Etoile Magique catamaran yacht
With extra stability even at higher speeds, catamaran yachts like the Etoile Magique are great options for adventure.
This 80-foot vessel is roomy for its size, with room for 16 guests in eight cabins. There’s space for a three-person crew, too.
Constructed in 2004 and remodeled a decade later, this is a budget-friendly adventure in the making. At $18,710 per week before expenses, that shakes out to a bit over $1,100 apiece.
Fuerte 3 catamaran yacht
Meaning “strong” in Spanish, the Fuerte 3 catamaran yacht — built in 2004 and renovated in 2010 — offers a more intimate experience than the Etoile Magique, with space for nine guests in four cabins.
On the smaller side, at 67 feet, you can bring two crew members along if you need them. The price tag for one week is around $22,000, or just over $2,400 a pop. This vessel is best in shallower waters.
Astrape sport fishing yacht
If your idea of the perfect vacation is sport fishing, this boat is for you. The Astrape sport fishing yacht comes with top-of-the-line fishing equipment so you can catch your dream fish.
Built in 2008 and remodeled in 2016, the 76-foot vessel sleeps eight in four cabins. It also has room for three crew members.
On the pricier side at $29,000, a week will cost each person nearly $3,700 — worth it if you can show off that once-in-a-lifetime catch, though!
Barefoot sport fishing yacht
Giving us some real Orca energy, the Barefoot sport fishing yacht was built in 2006 — much later than that famed vessel from "Jaws."
The 64-foot boat is designed for fishing in shallower waters, perfect for you and five friends who will share three cabins. Two crew members can fit, too.
This yacht is cheaper than the Astrape at $17,500, so six folks will pay just under $3,000 a head per week.
Prenses Lila gulet yacht
Gulet yachts are known for their tall masts, ample deck space, and Turkish origins — perfect for a Mediterranean voyage.
To that end, the Prenses Lila is an excellent option for groups of 18. At 114 feet with eight cabins and space for five crew members, this boat beckons.
You can charter Prenses Lila — built in 2009 and remodeled in 2009 — for $17,500 per week in September.
Dreamland gulet yacht
The second gulet yacht and the final boat we’re covering is Dreamland, which will surely take you there.
Constructed in 2006, 12 guests can sleep in six suites on this 105-foot vessel as well as five crew members.
You can book Dreamland for around $26,000 in high season. Divide that by 12, and you land on about $2,200 per person. That might require some financial fitness , but yachts like this don’t come around every day.
Bottom line
Spending your days sunning and swimming aboard a luxurious yacht may seem like an out-of-reach proposition, but we’re here to tell you it’s possible.
In fact, with planning and savvy budgeting, you can score your dream seafaring adventure. You can even use your favorite credit card to book and earn travel rewards .
Traveling by charter yacht is also more environmentally friendly than flying, which means you can feel good about your sailing vacation.

Owner of sunken boat leaking oil in Harpswell summonsed
by Ariana St Pierre, WGME
HARPSWELL (WGME) -- The owner of a sunken 80-foot-long fishing boat that’s sitting at the bottom of New Meadows River in Harpswell and leaking oil is now facing charges.
The boat sank in Harpswell during January’s twin storms and record-high tides.
The harbor master says he hasn't received a plan yet for raising and disposing of the sunken boat.

According to the harbor master, the town is summonsing the boat owner for the Class E criminal crime of abandonment of a watercraft.
The owner could be fined the cost of removal plus 50 percent of that cost.
Removing the boat from the water and towing it piece by piece could cost more than $100,000.
A look at what you need to know to fish for trout this spring across Pennsylvania
About 4 million trout are being placed in waterways across the state and there are a few things you need to know before you try to catch some of them.
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has started stocking about 3.2 million trout across 697 streams and 129 lakes across the state in anticipation of the season opening on April 6.
In addition to trout raised at state fish hatcheries, PFBC cooperative nurseries operated by sportsmen's clubs and other groups across the state will add another one million trout to waters open to public angling throughout the year.
Who needs a license to fish in Pennsylvania?
Anglers 16 years of age or older must possess a valid Pennsylvania fishing license. The cost for a resident fishing license is $27.97 and the trout permit is $14.97.
Fishing licenses and permits can be purchased through the HuntFishPA online portal on the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) website (Fishandboat.com), on your smartphone using the FishBoatPA mobile app, or by visiting one of nearly 700 retail license issuing agents like sports shops and county treasurer offices.
Trout permits
A current Pennsylvania trout permit is required to fish for trout in Pennsylvania waters. An angler “fishes for trout” when the angler: Takes, kills or possesses, while in the act of fishing, a trout from any Pennsylvania or boundary waters; fishes in waters under special trout regulations; fishes in any Class A Wild Trout Waters or Wilderness Trout Streams or their tributaries, and fishes in streams and rivers designated as stocked trout waters.
Voluntary permits
Customers who purchase a 2024 fishing license can once again support their favorite PFBC programs through the purchase of voluntary permits for bass, musky, wild trout/enhanced waters, and habitat/waterways conservation. These permits are not required for fishing and carry no additional privileges, but all funds generated through them are reinvested into their respective program. The agency has been able to invest more than $620,000 into special projects funded by the sale of voluntary permits since 2019.
When is the first day of trout season in Pennsylvania?
There are several important dates for trout anglers this year:
- March 30 – Statewide Mentored Youth Trout Day 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
- April 6 – Statewide Opening Day of Trout Season at 8 a.m., creel limit of five trout that are at least seven inches long.
- Sept. 3 – Extended trout season begins with a creel limit of three.
- Nov. 1 through April 30 – Mandatory Life Jacket Requirement in effect for boats under 16 feet long, canoes, kayaks and paddleboards.
Mentored Youth Trout Day
In an effort to help more young people get involved in fishing, there’s a mentored youth day held before the official start of fishing season. This year, it’s from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on March 30.
Stocking trout: More than 4 million trout are coming to a lake or stream near you
Youth anglers must obtain a Voluntary Youth Fishing License that costs $2.97 or a free Mentored Youth Fishing Permit from the PFBC, and be accompanied by a licensed adult angler in order to participate. The angler may mentor multiple youth.
The Voluntary Youth Fishing License provides an extended return for both Pennsylvania’s youth and the Commission. For each license purchased for $2.97, the commission receives $5 back in funding as a federal reimbursement. The commission receives no federal reimbursement for free Mentored Youth Permits.
Anglers 16 years of age or older must possess a valid Pennsylvania fishing license and current trout permit and be accompanied by a youth.
Participating youth may keep two trout that have a minimum length of seven inches. Adult anglers are prohibited from possessing trout this day.
Keystone Select
There are trout waters were people can fish throughout the year. The Keystone Select Stocked Trout Waters is a program where sections of 24 streams across the state are stocked with large trout measuring 14-20 inches, and managed under Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only or Miscellaneous Special regulations. Under the program, approximately 10,000 large trout will be distributed among the streams.
Fish for Free Days
No fishing license is needed to fish on May 26 and July 4 on public waters in Pennsylvania. Other regulations apply.
New in 2024 for boaters
Waterways conservation officers are looking for debris and plants on boats that may cross contaminate another waterway.
Officers may ask boaters to remove aquatic plants or prohibited species from a watercraft, trailer or water-related equipment before transport or before immersing in a waterway.
More: Pennsylvania fishing license fees to remain same in 2025 because of increased sales
Lake Erie Permit
All anglers fishing in the waters of Lake Erie, Presque Isle Bay and their tributaries, including waters that flow into those tributaries, are required to possess a valid Lake Erie permit for $9.97 or a combination trout/Lake Erie permit for $20.97.
What types of trout are stocked in Pennsylvania?
The PFBC plans to release 2.4 million rainbow trout; 702,000 brown trout, 132,000 brook trout and 14,000 golden rainbow trout. As with past practice, the average size of the trout produced for stocking is 11 inches in length with an average weight of .58 pounds.
While every fish is fun to catch, it’s also good to know which type of trout you caught when you tell your friends and family about your success.
Fortunately, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission provides the following descriptions to help anglers understand the differences:
Rainbow : They are known for their pink lateral stripe, dark spots and shiny scales. They have a greenish color and their tails have dark spots. The majority of stocked trout in streams and lakes in Pennsylvania are rainbows.
Brown : Brown trout are more brown and gray in color. They have shiny scales but don’t have the pink stripe down their sides that is found on rainbows. Browns have dark black and red spots. The fins are clear, yellow-brown and unmarked. The belly is white-yellow.
Brook : Brook trout are a darker colored fish that have red spots with bluish halos that dot the length of the body. Sometimes they have orange coloring on their lower half. Brook trout is the state’s official fish.
Golden rainbow: The easiest trout to identify is the golden rainbow trout. They have a deep yellow or orange coloration and are easy to spot in shallow waterways. They are a gold-orange rainbow trout raised under artificial fish culture conditions and stocked as a novelty for angling sport. The PFBC reports the golden rainbow was developed from one fish, a single female trout with a genetic mutation that gave her a mixed golden and normal rainbow trout coloration. She was found in the West Virginia hatchery system in 1954. Through selective breeding with regularly marked Rainbow Trout, an all-gold, Golden Rainbow Trout was developed. It is a stronger hybrid species of the similar colored Palomino trout that was previously stocked in Pennsylvania.
Lake: Lake trout are similar to a brook trout, but have light spots across their sides and have a distinct forked tail. They are found in large waterways like Raystown Lake and Lake Erie.
Steelhead: If you fish around Lake Erie, you may encounter steelhead, which is a type of rainbow trout that lives part of the year in the Great Lake. They are a more silvery colored fish that has earned the nickname “chrome” by some anglers. They can grow to more than 30 inches long. There are special regulation for fishing for trout around Lake Erie, please consult your summary guide handbook regarding Erie waterways.
Tiger: The Fish and Boat Commission does not raise tiger trout, which is a cross between a brook trout and a brown trout. However some are still found in waterways, including through some private stockings. They look similar to a brook trout but have wavy lines on their sides instead of spots.
Catch and release
If you don’t want to keep your fish, the commission offers the following advice to give your catch the best chance for survival:
- Use barbless hooks.
- Play fish quickly.
- Try to land your fish as quickly as possible, don’t play the fish to exhaustion, and use a landing net.
- Keep the fish in the water. The chance of a fish being injured increases the longer it is held out of water.
- Wet your hands, net and other materials that may come in contact with the fish.
- Hold the fish upside down while removing the hook. This can often pacify the fish and reduce handling time.
- Remove hooks quickly. Hemostats or long-nose pliers are essential tools for quickly removing hooks.
- Cut the line. When it is not possible to remove the hook without harming the fish, cut the line.
- Don’t touch the gills. Do not handle fish by placing your fingers in the gill slits.
- Hold the fish upright underwater after hook removal and allow it to swim away under its own power. If necessary, hold the fish out of the current until it revives.
Still have questions?
This feature is not meant to include all the regulations required for anglers. For further information, consult 2024 Fishing Summary/Boating Handbook that is provided with your fishing license or the digital version that can be found on the PFBC website, or viewed on the FishBoatPA mobile app.

Love it or hate it, technology is becoming increasingly intertwined with the outdoors, especially fish finders . Long gone are the days of putting around a lake and looking for clues as to where the fish might be. Modern fish finders show fish, depth, and structure at just about every angle imaginable. With the increase in technology comes an increase in options for anglers.
Offerings range from basic depth finders to 360-degree fish finders pinpointing entire schools of fish. Is this cheating? It depends on who you ask—but I personally am a big fan. To better understand this technology, I took to the water with every configuration available to find the best fish finders for anglers, whether you’re kayak fishing, ice fishing, or heading out on the open seas. Next time you’re on the water and can’t find the fish, it might be time to consider one of these from Simrad, Humminbird, Lowrance, and Garmin.
The Best Fish Finders
- Best Overall: Humminbird Apex 13 Mega SI+ Chartplotter
- Best Budget: Simrad GO9 XSE Chartplotter
- Best for Kayak: Garmin Striker Vivid 7sv
- Best for Ice Fishing: Humminbird Ice Helix 9 MSI+ GPS G4N Mega 360 Bundle
- Best Portable: Garmin Striker Cast GPS Castable Sonar
- Best GPS Combo: Lowrance Elite FS 7 Fish Finder/Chartplotter Combo
How We Picked the Best Fish Finders
Having spent the better part of my life in and around water, I’ve come to rely on any advantage I can get while fishing—and that includes fish finders.
Over the last several seasons, I’ve spent every waking moment on the water I can. In other words, if I’m not working, I’m fishing. I’ve targeted everything from Florida Keys Tarpon to Okeechobee Largemouth and put various fish finders through their paces.
To make the list, a fish finder had to be user-friendly, deliver crisp images, and offer a specific advantage to users. I’ve personally used every fish finder on this list and each one hits these criteria and then some, helping me put more fish in the boat.
- User-friendly interface
- Compatible with other apps for a complete control center
- Crisp imaging
Live imaging is the hot new topic in fishing. The combination of a front-facing transducer and crisp images allows you to interact with fish beneath the surface to the point where you can see fish following lures. I tested Humminbird’s Apex 13 with Mega Live Imaging to get a better feel for this technology. The results were astounding.
For starters, I mounted the transducer and Apex unit to the front of my flats boat. Do I get funny looks having a graph on the front of my flats boat? Yes. Do I regret it? Not at all. The head unit itself is a great addition to any boat. It offers incredibly clear images, detailed mapping, and a user-friendly experience. The combination of touchscreen and toggle controls made it easy for me to learn and navigate within minutes of setup.
On new water bodies and deep water fishing scenarios, live imaging proved to be the key to consistently catching fish. The Humminbird Apex 13 took the guesswork of where the fish were out of the equation. Instead, I quickly covered water until I found fish and dialed in what they were interested in. While it may not be for everyone, it’s hard to argue with the effectiveness of live imaging, and I will certainly be finding more uses for it in the near future.
- Screen Size : 13-inch
- Interface : Dual touch screen and toggle controls
- Available Modes : Side Imaging, Down Imaging, Live Imaging, 360 Imaging
- NMEA compatible for full boat compatibility
- Full touch screen functionality maximizes screen size
- Slow startup process
The fish finder market is flooded with “budget” options, including a few fish finders under $500 . After using several of these cheaper options, the unfortunate truth is many offer lackluster imaging and can be a pain to use. The exception? The Simrad GO9 XSE, a user-friendly, affordable option offering crisp images.
Since I entered the world of inshore fishing in South Florida years ago, the GO9 XSE has been my main tool to find new water, navigate shallow areas, and, most importantly, find fish. The base model comes with a 3-in-1 transducer complete with side scan, down scan, and traditional sonar. Images are crisp and easy to read, so much so that I rely exclusively on side scans to find tarpon in deeper channels. Believe it or not, I can distinctly pick out their silhouettes and fins.
The unit itself is among the most user-friendly I’ve used. Full touchscreen accessibility offers an intuitive means to select screens, create custom split screens, and navigate maps. For the money, the combination of the interface and imaging capabilities makes it hard to beat. The Simrad GO9 XSE has some of the best deals I’ve seen on fish finders.
- Screen Size : 9-inch
- Interface : Touchscreen
- Available Modes : Side Imaging, Down Imaging
- Easy to install
- Relatively light
- Rugged and durable for kayak use
- Image quality could be better
Modern fishing kayaks are getting closer and closer to traditional power boats every year. With the gap narrowing and technology improving, a fish finder is crucial for any serious kayak angler. The Garmin Striker Vivid 7sv offers everything boat anglers look for in a fish finder but in a kayak-sized package. A 7-inch screen offers the perfect medium between saving space and easy screen viewing. The installation process is straightforward, with a simple bracket mount to secure the graph to the kayak.
For more versatility, a simple swivel mount on the gunwale allows anglers to adjust the fish finder depending on their needs. The transducer is reasonably sized and easy to mount to the transom of a kayak or under the hull (if the kayak has a slot for transducers). Despite its smaller-sized screen, the Striker has all the functionality of its larger counterparts. This includes side imaging, down imaging, and sonar scanning capabilities.
While images are not as crisp as some other larger units, it offers the perfect balance of helpful information in a reasonable-sized package—just what you want in a fish finder for a kayak .
- Screen Size : 7-inch
- Interface : Button controls
- Available Modes : Side Imaging, Down Imaging, Sonar
- Easy to read
- Zoom capabilities
- Compatible with any Helix transducer for use in boats
Ice fishing can be daunting when covering large bodies of water or new areas. The Humminbird Ice Helix 9 Mega 360 Bundle helps cut this learning curve and find fish through the ice, making it one of the best ice fishing fish finders . This bundle takes the same 360 Mega Imaging popular on bass boats and applies it to a mobile unit for ice anglers. Simply drill a hole and set up the transducer pole.
The unit will display a complete 360-degree live image view up to 120 feet from the hole. I can quickly cover large sections on new water bodies and eliminate areas that aren’t holding fish. The ability to pinpoint areas with active fish dramatically reduces the time spent drilling holes and keeps you on fish longer.
Once you find the fish, a small flasher/sonar transducer comes with the kit to dial in on a single fish. While 360 imaging is an investment, anglers looking to explore new water or better understand fish through the ice should look no further. So far, it’s the closest thing I’ve found to seeing underwater.
- Interface : Push button
- Available Modes : 360 Live Imaging, Chirp Sonar, Flasher
- Affordable for anglers on a budget
- Active mapping creates contour maps of areas where you fish
- Can be used on open water or through the ice
- Use heavy lines when casting to avoid losing it
Portable fish finders —and more specifically, castable fish finders—are becoming increasingly popular amongst anglers looking to see what’s under the water without access to a boat. One of the best is Garmin’s Striker Cast series.
I hit the water with the Cast GPS version, which offers traditional sonar readings paired with GPS functionality to view maps of the waterway you are fishing. It was by far the easiest to use of all the fish finders I’ve tested. Tie it onto a fishing rod , cast it, and view the readings through a smartphone. (Just be sure to use a heavy fishing line to avoid breaking this off; we went with a 65lb braid .)
The sonar readings are accurate and help pinpoint fish and structure. But the best part about this device is its GPS function to build contour maps. With a series of casts in a “V” formation, the Striker Cast will use sonar readings to build contour maps where you plan to fish. Identifying drop-offs and structure is crucial for bank anglers to find likely areas where fish are hiding. Come winter, this little unit also doubles as a flasher for ice fishing. Drop it in a hole and switch to flasher mode to see individual fish interact with your bait below the ice.
- Screen Size : Screen size depends on the smartphone/tablet you pair it with
- Interface : N/A
- Available Modes : Sonar and flasher
- Easy to use
- High-definition mapping and active contour maps
- A rugged system that stands up to hard use
- Small screen size
Before becoming a writer, I spent several years as a fisheries biologist in South Florida. Good mapping was crucial with much of the time spent on the water, navigating vast wetlands and lakes. I came to rely heavily on the Lowrance Elite FS 7-inch fish finder.
This unit is easy to set up with minimal rigging. Run the transducer from the transom, mount the unit, and hook it up to power. Once it is ready to go, I found that learning the unit is incredibly simple. It’s a touchscreen, so navigating between screens is a breeze. The base model comes ready with side imaging, down imaging, and sonar.
The Elite FS also comes with detailed maps from the factory showing base depth on various water bodies. For a more detailed approach, live mapping can create detailed contours of specific areas or entire water bodies. After nearly 500 days of on-the-water use and rough use at that, this unit held up just as the day it was installed. Safe to say, I’m a huge fan.
- Interface : Touch screen and toggle buttons
What to Look For in a Fish Finder
Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to fish finders. Some are brand loyal, and some want the best fit for their boat. Regardless of where you land, your equipment has to be capable of delivering the information you need and holding up to the elements on the water.
There are two main types of interfaces on fish finders: touchscreen and button controls. Each offers its own benefits on the water. Touchscreens are intuitively easy to learn to use. Selecting screens, dropping waypoints, and navigating maps can all be done at the touch of a button. Button controls can take a little more getting used to but are great when things get wet. Wet and cold fingers don’t always register well on a touch screen but are great for button-controlled units.
For those wanting the best of both worlds, a hybrid option lets you operate in either manner.
Fishing Style
How you fish is a critical part of determining what fish finder is best for you. Anglers fishing deep water for schooling fish should seriously consider live imaging. The ability to see active schools of fish will drastically cut down on the time searching for fish and will translate to more fish hitting the deck.
For anglers fishing rivers or areas with heavy structure, a good side imaging fish finder is a must. This lets you pick apart structures from a distance before making casts to likely areas. If you find yourself on the ice in the winter, look for units that can easily be switched between boats and ice fishing setups, like the Humminbird Helix 9 .
Fish finders vary widely in price, from budget options to some that cost as much as small boats. Once you’ve narrowed down what options you need in a unit, set a budget. There are plenty of great units on the market. While the bigger screen is always nice, if it means saving money that can go to more fishing gear, I tend to lean toward the smaller screen, especially if the functionality is the same.
Q: What fish finder has the best side imaging?
Side imaging is an integral part of most fish finders these days. All major brands offer excellent image quality and straightforward interfaces. That said, I’ve had particularly good luck with the Simrad GO9 XSE . Its full touchscreen interface takes up the entire housing. This reduces the overall size of the unit while maximizing the screen size. The end result is crisp images that are easy to view.
Q: How does a fish finder work?
Fish finders work by emitting a sonar pulse from the transducer. The signal travels through the water until it hits an object like a fish or structure. It then bounces back to the transducer, showing up as a blip on the fish finder. Side and down imaging work similarly but with smaller beams emitted from the transducer. The unit compiles a series of these beams to create a detailed image of the bottom contour.
Q: How do you read a fish finder?
Reading a fish finder is easier than it looks. After the sonar waves bounce off a fish and return to the transducer, the unit displays them as “U” shaped blips. The bigger the blips, the bigger the fish. When the fish finder reads these signals, it simultaneously calculates the depth of the fish. Look at the position of the blip and the corresponding depth markers to see how deep the fish is.
What Is the Best Fish Finder?
Fish finders are an integral part of modern fishing. Using them to your advantage will result in consistently landing more fish. China and Taiwan launch joint rescue bid after boat capsizes near sensitive islands
TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwan dispatched coast guard boats on Thursday to join a rescue mission at China’s request after a fishing vessel capsized near the Taiwan-controlled Kinmen islands , amid heightened tension in the sensitive Taiwan Strait.
China claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, over the island’s strong objections, and has stepped up military activities near it in recent years, with almost daily incursions into air defense identification zones.
Authorities on both sides sent the rescue boats after a Chinese fishing vessel capsized in the early hours, Taiwan’s coast guard said in a statement, adding that two people were missing, though two had been rescued and two bodies retrieved.
Coast guard chief Chou Mei-wu told a parliamentary committee the boats were sent after Chinese authorities sought help, adding that such requests were common, with 119 people rescued in such efforts over the past three years or so.
“The waters are narrow around the Kinmen-Xiamen (area) and co-operation between Taiwan and China is very important,” he said, referring to the neighbors’ cities that face each other across the strait.
Taiwan sent four coast guard vessels and its Chinese counterpart six to participate in the rescue effort, the coast guard said.
Last month, China’s coast guard began regular patrols around the Kinmen islands close to its coast, after two Chinese nationals died while trying to flee Taiwan’s coast guard after their boat entered prohibited waters.
The Chinese fishing boat capsized about 1.07 nautical miles west of Taiwan’s Dongding island, the coast guard said, with armed forces stationed there also engaging in the rescue, but did not elaborate.
In a statement, Taiwan’s Kinmen defense command said it had not received any request from Chinese authorities to search the island, but added that any survivors found would be handed to the coast guard.
Last week, Taiwan’s top China policy-making body urged its giant neighbor not to change the “status quo” around the waters there by sending coast guard boats into restricted areas, saying tension should be “controllable.”

Captain of a taiwanese fishing boat vows legal action over alleged beating.
- Staff writer, with CNA
The captain of a Taiwanese fishing boat vowed to take legal action after he was allegedly attacked by a group believed to be comprised of his former employees.
Lee Chih-ming (李致銘), captain of the Taiwanese-flagged Tenn Ming Yang No. 368, was beaten by crew members from another vessel while his ship was moored in a port in Mauritius, videos by a witness showed.
Lee held a news conference on Thursday last week after returning to Taiwan to give his account of the incident.

The incident took place on the evening of March 7 when several Indonesian “crew members of another ship” came to his ship to drink, said Lee, without elaborating.
The Indonesians were drinking and talking loudly, so he told them to keep their voices down, angering them, Lee said.
The Indonesians went to the captain’s cockpit, where they berated and hit him, Lee said.
There were five to eight assailants, Lee added.
In one of the videos, Lee knelt and apologized to his assailants, but the apology was made under duress out of fear of being subjected to more violence, Lee said.
Although officials at “the local Indonesian consulate” had tracked down three of his assailants, who later apologized to him, he would be bringing a lawsuit against all of his assailants to hold them accountable for their actions, Lee said.
He added that all his injuries sustained during the beating were documented at a hospital immediately after returning to Taiwan.
In a statement on Thursday, the Taiwan Tuna Longline Association condemned the perpetrators, saying they should have vented their frustration by filing complaints through appropriate channels rather than by resorting to violence, which was “unacceptable.”
A source from the crew of Tenn Ming Yang No. 368 gave a different account.
The so-called “crew members from another ship” were Lee’s former crew members who had asked to be transferred to other vessels because they could no longer stand Lee’s management style, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation in a call from Mauritius.
The source said that the former crew members went to Tenn Ming Yang No. 368 to “see their friends,” but when they saw Lee on board, they confronted him to ask why he had mistreated them.
Some of the Indonesians who confronted Lee had recently served out their contracts and were “going back [to Indonesia] soon,” the source said.
The source denied that the incident was triggered by Lee asking the former crew members to be quiet, saying “nothing like that happened.”
Lee hit several of his crew members on several occasions, is arrogant and often berates his staff for “small mistakes,” the source said.
Lee denied allegations of mistreatment when confronted by his former crew members on the night of March 7, the source said, adding that this angered them and led to the beating.
In a statement on Thursday, the Fisheries Agency said it would visit Mauritius to investigate the incident and interview crew members of Tenn Ming Yang No. 368.
Taiwan’s law enforcement agencies would handle any criminal offenses and it would offer the plaintiff judicial assistance through diplomatic channels, it added.

Taiwan has absolute air superiority: official
Taiwan has “absolute air superiority” over China in its own airspace, Deputy Minister of National Defense Po Horng-huei (柏鴻輝) told a meeting of the legislature’s Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee on Monday, amid concern over whether Taipei could defend itself against a military incursion by Beijing.
