The Sailor's Style Guide: How to Dress at a Yacht Club

If you've been invited to a casual yacht club rendezvous, you'll need the right threads to fit in.  in this guide, we'll walk you through the yacht club attire you'll need to fit in. hint: you can find the perfect outfit head to toe with castaway.

You've been invited to a meal or event at a local yacht club, but you've never been to one before. Suddenly, the panic sets in. What should you wear? Fortunately, there are lots of options and visiting a yacht club does not mean you have to spend a lot of money just to fit in. This post will give you some pointers on yacht club attire so that you feel neither under nor overdressed, and can really enjoy yourself and have a great time at the club.

Before you even think about what to wear, check to see if the yacht club you're going to has a dress code posted online. Most of them do, and the rules can vary from club to club. The Nantucket Yacht Club , for example, requires semi-formal attire for its dinners and cocktail attire including ties for men during its dinner dances and balls. The Hyannis Yacht Club goes into a little more detail. It accepts stylish casual wear including clean, neat jeans and shorts for lunch. For dinner, guests are expected to step it up by leaving the denim at home and wearing sports coats. Different areas of a club may also have different dress rules. Bars and outdoor decks tend to more lax and allow casual clothing.

Sometimes, the easiest way of narrowing down what to wear is to eliminate what you should not wear. This is just a partial list of how not to show up at any kind of yacht club unless you want to be denied admittance or receive a lot of disapproving glares. All rules listed apply to the inside of the club, and can vary for beach and dock rulings.

Flip Flops or Going Barefoot: This rule applies INSIDE the club, or for any meal time. Most people love the beach, but going barefoot is not only unacceptable, but unhygienic.

You'll want to wear appropriate footwear such as sturdy sandals or closed toe shoes. While a lot of children and adults love their flip-flops, they may be a little too casual for a yacht club atmosphere. The most popular choice here is a boat shoe style but a bridle bit driver is always appropriate - check the latest . The lightly worn leather and pencil-curled laces fit the bill in the cool department.

Torn, Stained, or Worn Clothing: Any attire that is showing signs of wear such as rips, stains that never came out, holes, missing buttons, etc. should be left at home.

Baseball Caps and Other Hats: Most yacht clubs prefer that men remove their caps when inside the venue. Save them for the sailing excursions.

Extra points on the water if you rock the Club’s Burgee on the hat!

Swimwear: Just a no-no. Save it for the boat and the beach. A cover-up can be acceptable for the patio.

Going Shirtless: Nope!

Undershirts as Shirts: See above. You may also want to be careful about choosing a t-shirt, particularly one with graphics, when visiting a yacht club. Most prefer that you wear a collared shirt, even if it's a casual one such as a polo shirt.

Tank tops for men and any tank tops for women that are skimpy and don't hide undergarments should be saved for another occasion.

Women have a lot of options when it comes to visiting a yacht club. Linen and cotton make the perfect summer blouses. A light but structured Sleeveless Top paired with a  sweater is perfect for warding off cool sea breezes when you're out on the deck. A polo or collared shirt works well for the yacht club scene as well. You can also consider a dressy blouse that has a little bit of flounce to it. If shorts are allowed for the time and area of the club you're visiting, consider sporting  Sailing  shorts  with a cute anchor embroidery. They're cool, classy, and show off just the right amount of leg. Casual skirts and dresses are perfectly fine as well as long as they're not too short and revealing. If you're attending a party at a yacht club you may need to wear a nice cocktail dress, or a classic Tunic Dress for a day event. Special events such as balls and dinner dances usually specify what is appropriate attire on the invitation.

Don't forget to have fun with accessories! A straw handbag can complete a nautical themed look.

For most casual yacht club occasions, men can't go wrong with a collared shirt and long pants or Cisco Shorts . Pastel and preppy shades such as summer green, hurricane red, and islander blue rule here.

When casual attire is allowed, collared sport or polo shirts are always in fashion. Seersucker and linen shirts are available in several colors and patterns for summer club get-togethers. If jeans are not allowed, seersucker or cotton canvas pants are still casual and comfortable yet dressy enough for all areas of a yacht club. If you really want to show your love of nautical dressing, consider wearing a fun Embroidered Pant !

Or you can opt for solid pants but add some nautical flair with an embroidered belt . Classic summer staples like Seersucker and Madras Patches will make you the talk of the Club, in a good way!

For those chilly sea breezes and evenings, a quarter zip pullover wards off the cool air while keeping you stylish and casual.

It's a good idea to keep a sportcoat and a few ties in your closet just in case the yacht club you're visiting requires it. Opt for a fun all over embroidered jacket, or a Madras Patchwork style to really up your game.

Kids' clothing should conform to the same yacht club rules as established for grown-up guests. If you really want your son to look cute, consider dressing him in the same matching outfit as dad.

What to Wear at a Yacht Club for Lunch – Your Ultimate Guide!

What to wear at a yacht club for lunch

Heading to a yacht club for lunch can be an exciting experience, offering you the chance to relax and dine in an exquisite setting.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a regular attendee, choosing the proper attire is essential to ensure you fit in and feel comfortable.

This article will explore some of the best apparel choices to keep you looking stylish and appropriate for lunch at a yacht club.

Yacht clubs often uphold a certain level of elegance, but there’s no need to feel intimidated when selecting your outfit.

The key is to find a balance between being well-dressed and enjoying the casual ambiance. So here we go; below, you’ll find everything you need to know on what to wear at a yacht club for lunch.

Table of Contents

Yacht Club Dress Codes

Understanding dress codes.

When attending a lunch at a yacht club, it’s essential to understand the dress code beforehand. Yacht clubs typically have varying dress requirements depending on the event and time of day.

For a lunch event, you’ll most likely encounter a more casual dress code. It’s best to familiarize yourself with the club’s specific guidelines and adhere to them.

Common Yacht Club Dress Codes

At most yacht clubs, there are a few general rules to follow when dressing for lunch:

  • Shirts:  Opt for collared shirts like a classic polo or button-down. Avoid wearing tank tops or T-shirts.
  • Bottoms:  Choose comfortable and well-tailored pants, such as chinos or slacks. Shorts may be acceptable, but ensure they are a reasonable length and not too casual or distressed.
  • Footwear:  Wear closed-toe shoes like loafers or boat shoes. Don’t wear flip-flops. Yacht clubs don’t allow it.
  • Tops:  Select a blouse or a nice polished yet comfortable top. Avoid wearing strapless, revealing, or overly casual tops.
  • Bottoms:  Choose tailored pants, skirts, or dresses that are appropriate in length and style. Shorts are generally discouraged, although some yacht clubs may permit them if they are dressy and tailored.
  • Footwear:  Opt for comfortable and stylish footwear like flats, wedges, or sandals. The same as men, don’t wear flip-flops.

Lunch Clothing Options for Men

Formal attire.

When attending a yacht club for lunch and dressing in formal attire, opt for a classic combination of a crisp collared shirt, slacks, or chinos.

Ties are typically not necessary, but if you want to elevate your look, feel free to include one.

Light colors like white or pale blues are perfect for a summery vibe. Finish your outfit with comfortable loafers or boating shoes for a polished appearance.

Casual Attire

If you prefer a more casual approach, your options expand to include versatile pieces like polo shirts, t-shirts, or even tank tops, as long as they’re not too skimpy. Pair your top with boat shorts or loose pants to ensure comfort and a laid-back aesthetic.

Footwear-wise, swap the loafers for a pair of sandals or boat shoes that are easy to slip on and off at the dock.

When dressing for a yacht club lunch, keep it simple and remember that your comfort is key.

Choose lightweight and breathable fabrics, such as cotton and linen, to ensure you remain cool and stylish while enjoying the sea breeze.

Lunch Clothing Options for Women

Dresses and skirts.

When choosing a dress or skirt for lunch at a yacht club, opt for lightweight fabrics like linen or cotton. Go for knee-length or midi dresses in soft, flowy fabrics that provide comfort and style. A linen dress is a classic option. If you’re leaning more toward skirts, choose one that matches the dress code of the yacht club while still making you feel fashionable and comfortable.

Blouses and Pants

Lunch at a yacht club gives you the opportunity to experiment with different styles of blouses. Cotton and linen are the perfect materials for a summer blouse, providing a casual yet sophisticated look.

Pair your blouse with pants that are comfortable for the yacht setting, like tailored linen pants. Avoid overly tight or restrictive clothing. If you prefer jeans, opt for a dark wash to maintain a polished appearance.

Footwear Suggestions

Men’s footwear.

When it comes to men’s footwear at a yacht club for lunch, you’ll want to focus on practicality and style.

It’s important to wear  non-slip and non-marking outsole shoes to avoid slipping or marking the deck in case you get on board a boat.

Boat shoes are a popular and comfortable choice, offering a fashionable look while being yacht-appropriate.

If you prefer sandals, opt for sturdy ones that provide support and grip. Just remember, some boat owners may require you to leave your shoes on the dock before getting on board a yacht.

So you might want to have an alternative footwear option handy. Lastly, look for shoes with  white outsoles , as they don’t mark the deck, keeping the yacht clean and pristine.

Women’s Footwear

For women, the same basic principles apply. Make sure you choose shoes with a  non-slip and non-marking outsole  to avoid any accidents. Boat shoes and sturdy sandals are both fantastic options for combining style and practicality.

If your lunch takes place on a boat, don’t wear high heels , as they can be dangerous and may damage the deck. As mentioned above, you might be asked to leave your shoes on the dock, so having a backup pair is a good idea.

As with men’s footwear, opting for  white outsoles  ensures you won’t leave any marks on the boat, allowing you to focus on enjoying your lunch at the yacht club.

Accessorizing Your Outfit

When choosing jewelry for a yacht club lunch, aim for elegant but understated pieces. Stick to delicate necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, avoiding anything too flashy or clunky. For example, a simple gold or silver pendant can add the right touch of class without being over the top. Remember, you’re attending a lunch event, so keep your choices on the more casual side.

Hats and Sunglasses

Something that most yacht clubs forbid is wearing a hat inside the building.

This rule applies to both men and women. So if you plan to have lunch at the yacht club’s restaurant, you can’t wear a hat unless you sit on the yacht deck or on a balcony.

However, suppose you are allowed to wear one outside; opt for hats with wide brims or classic Panama hats to shield your face from the sun’s rays.

Sunglasses are another essential for a daytime event like a yacht club lunch. Look for pairs that offer full UV protection and complement your outfit. Classic shapes like aviators or wayfarers are versatile and timeless choices.

Just make sure your sunglasses don’t clash with your hat, and you’ll be well on your way to a perfectly accessorized outfit for a yacht club lunch.

Considering the Weather

When planning your outfit for a yacht club lunch, it’s important to consider the weather. In warmer temperatures, opt for light, breathable fabrics like linen or cotton.

A short-sleeved polo shirt or a blouse is an excellent choice for staying cool and comfortable. Women can also wear light sundresses or shorts with a tank top that isn’t too revealing.

In cooler or unpredictable weather, layering is key. Start with a collared shirt or a light blouse, and add a sweater or light jacket if needed.

Don’t forget to bring an umbrella or a water-resistant coat if there’s a chance of rain, and always have a pair of sunglasses on hand for those unexpectedly sunny moments.

When choosing your footwear, remember that you may be walking on wet surfaces or spending time outside. Avoid flip-flops and opt for non-slipping boating shoes , like Sperry, that offer both style and functionality. These shoes come in numerous styles, making it easy to find the perfect match for your outfit.

What to Avoid Wearing

When heading to a yacht club for lunch, there are a few fashion faux pas you should be mindful of. Remember, yacht clubs have a certain level of sophistication, and dressing appropriately is crucial.

First and foremost, avoid wearing any torn, stained, or worn clothing. Clothes with rips, holes, missing buttons, and stubborn stains are not suitable for the yacht club setting. Your outfit should be clean, well-maintained, and presentable.

As tempting as it may be to flaunt your summer style, steer clear of revealing clothing. Avoid items like denim shorts, tank tops, mini skirts, and cut-off shirts. Instead, opt for more modest attire that allows you to stay cool and look chic.

While you may love your comfortable flip-flops or sneakers, it’s not allowed to wear them to a yacht club lunch. These casual footwear options can come across as too casual and out of place. Instead, choose shoes that are stylish and comfortable but more refined.

Additionally, leave your baseball caps and other hats at home. Most yacht clubs prefer that men remove their caps when inside the venue, so it’s best to stick to this etiquette and keep the caps for actual sailing excursions.

Lastly, avoid dressing too casually with clothing like wrinkled or sloppy attire. Yacht club lunches often have a semi-formal or smart casual dress code, so make sure your outfit is polished and well-balanced between casual and formal elements.

Questions People Forten Ask

Q: What is the typical dress code for a yacht club lunch?

Yacht clubs often have a more relaxed dress code during lunchtime. Stylish casual wear, including clean, neat jeans and shorts, is usually acceptable. However, it’s always a good idea to check with the specific yacht club for their dress code guidelines.

Q: How formal should my attire be for a yacht club lunch?

Although the attire for a yacht club lunch is less formal than dinner, you should still aim to look polished and presentable. Opt for refined and comfortable clothing, such as dressy shorts, skirts, or pants paired with an elegant top. You may also want to consider wearing a light blazer to elevate your look.

Q: Are there any specific clothing items to avoid at a yacht club?

When attending a yacht club event, it is best to avoid overly casual clothing items, such as flip-flops, athletic wear, or torn clothing. It’s also recommended to leave the denim at home when attending a yacht club dinner, as mentioned in The Sailor ‘s Style Guide: How to Dress at a Yacht Club. Different areas of the club may have specific dress rules, so it’s always good to inquire ahead of time.

Q: How does a daytime yacht club event differ in dress code?

Daytime events at yacht clubs tend to have a more relaxed dress code compared to evening events. For day events, it is appropriate to wear casual yet polished clothing like shorts, skirts, and light dresses. However, as the sun sets and nighttime events begin, expect the dress code to become more formal, often requiring sports coats or cocktail attire.

Q: Do yacht clubs have a specific dress code to follow when dining?

Yacht clubs usually have a more formal dress code for dining, especially during dinner. In most cases, sports coats are expected, and denim should be avoided. For ladies, sophisticated dresses or skirts with elegant tops are appropriate. Check with the yacht club you are attending to ensure you follow their specific rules and guidelines for dining attire.

Final Words!

Now that you have an idea of the appropriate attire, you’re set to enjoy a delightful lunch at the yacht club. Dress to impress, adhere to the dress code, and don’t forget to indulge in the delicious food and beautiful views the club has to offer.

There are many practical suggestions that will make a first time visitor feel comfortable. This article provides all one needs to know about proper dress etiquette for yacht clubs in general.  Yacht clubs promote boating and cruising, and provide social meeting place for the boating community. Do you have to own a boat or sea vessel to join a yacht club? Do yacht clubs screen potential members financial standing or backgrounds before they are accepted? Do potential members have to be sponsored by a member of the yacht club to join? All I need now is to be invited to lunch at our local yacht club. I know just what to wear. Thanks.

Purpose of a Yacht Club

The primary purpose of a yacht club is to promote and support the sport of yachting. This includes organizing sailing races, providing training courses, and offering facilities for members to store and maintain their yachts.

Activities at a Yacht Club

While racing and training are significant components of most yacht clubs, they also host various social events, ranging from casual get-togethers to formal galas. Some also offer amenities like restaurants, bars, fitness centers, and accommodation.

Why Do People Join Yacht Clubs?

There are numerous reasons why people join yacht clubs. Here are some of the main ones:

Yacht clubs provide a community of fellow yachting enthusiasts. They offer a space where members can share their passion for the sea, learn from each other, and form lasting friendships.

Facilities and Services

Yacht clubs often provide excellent facilities and services for their members. This can include access to private docks, boat storage and maintenance services, and discounts on sailing gear and equipment.

Events and Competitions

Members of yacht clubs have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of events and competitions. These can range from local regattas to international sailing championships.

The Etiquette of Yacht Clubs

Like any social club, yacht clubs have their own set of etiquette rules that members are expected to follow.

Respect for Tradition

Yacht clubs often have long-standing traditions that are important to their identity. This could include specific ceremonies, dress codes, or rules about behavior on and off the water.

Good Sportsmanship

Good sportsmanship is highly valued in yacht clubs. Whether participating in a race or a casual sail, members are expected to respect the rules of the sport and their fellow sailors.

Responsibility

Members of yacht clubs are also expected to take responsibility for their actions. This includes taking care of club facilities, respecting the environment, and ensuring the safety of themselves and others.

What to Wear to a Yacht Club

When it comes to what to wear to a yacht club, the key is to strike a balance between comfort, practicality, and style.

Casual Events

For casual events or a day of sailing, opt for comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing. This could include shorts or chinos, a polo shirt or t-shirt, and boat shoes or sneakers. Don’t forget your sunglasses and a hat for sun protection.

Formal Events

For formal events at the yacht club, smart-casual or cocktail attire is typically appropriate. Men might wear a blazer and trousers, while women could opt for a dress or smart separates. Remember, some yacht clubs may have specific dress codes for certain events, so it’s always a good idea to check in advance.

Embracing the Yacht Club Lifestyle

Joining a yacht club offers a unique lifestyle that combines sport, community, and a deep appreciation for the sea. It provides an opportunity to develop your sailing skills, participate in exciting events, and become part of a supportive and passionate community.

In conclusion, yacht clubs offer much more than just a place to dock your boat. They are vibrant communities that bring together individuals who share a love for yachting and the sea. Whether you’re an experienced sailor or a complete beginner, joining a yacht club could open up a new world of experiences and friendships. So why not embrace the yacht club lifestyle and see where it takes you?

Dressing for a Yacht Club Party

Lucky you!  You have just received an invitation for your very first yacht club party.  For most people this brings up the question “What on earth do I wear?”.  Have no fear!  We work with many yacht clubs to make sure their members look sharp with custom ties and scarves .  Here are some of our style tips to help you navigate the waters of yacht club fashion and pull together an amazing outfit.

Yacht Club Wear – Do Nots

While yacht club attire can vary by club and time of day of the event, there are certain items that just won’t do.  You should always avoid the following:

  • T-Shirts / Tank Tops
  • Revealing clothing (i.e. cut-off shirts, mini skirts, etc)
  • Wrinkled or otherwise “sloppy” attire

Also, while you may be tempted to don an ascot or jaunty captain’s hat … don’t.  For most people this will come across as cliche rather than sporty.  Classic styles, nautical colors and smart layers are the best way to go when building your dock-side ensemble.  You can also shop many of the clubs’ stores for shirts and ties embellished with the club logo.

Yacht Club Wear –  Dos

Hopefully, your invitation indicates the dress code.  But if it doesn’t, there are two general rules of thumb.  If the party is during the day, then select attire in the “country club casual” category.  If the party is in the evening, opt for traditional cocktail party wear.

Country Club Casual for Men

A classic polo or Oxford shirt is the standard for men.  Shirts should be clean, in good condition and neatly pressed.  These should be worn with black slacks or khakis.  When it comes to shoes, loafers in brown or black are the most popular choice.  A less popular but also acceptable footwear option is a pair of leather boots in black or brown.  Some yacht clubs require blazers even for daytime events.  To be safe, check the attire requirements posted on the club’s website or call them prior to the event.

Country Club Casual for Women

Just like men, polo shirts paired with well-cut slacks are an acceptable option for women.  Women can also choose a tailored blouse worn with a knee-length cotton skirt for a slightly dressier look.  Another popular ensemble is a simple summer dress with minimal accessories.  A cashmere sweater is the perfect outer layer to protect from cool breezes.  Ballet flats are the top shoe choice when dressing country club casual.

Cocktail Attire for Men

While not as formal as black-tie, cocktail wear is decidedly dressier than daytime apparel at a yacht club.  Dress slacks with a jacket and tie or a full suit are both appropriate options for an evening event.  Choose neutrals and subdued tones over bright colors or prints.  Men should accessorize with a black leather belt and matching shoes.  Stick with a loafer or Oxford style shoe and be sure your socks coordinate with your pants.

Cocktail Attire for Women

Cocktail dresses should be knee-length or midi-length in a solid or very subtle print.  If you are having a tough time finding the right color, the quintessential “little black dress” is always a smart choice.  Another popular trend for evening events is a formal women’s pant suit.  When it comes to accessorizing, less is more.  Choose a single statement piece of jewelry rather than a multitude of pieces and opt for a clutch instead of a shoulder bag.  Heels, dressy sandals, and ballet flats are all acceptable shoe options.

Dress to Impress: What to Wear to a Yacht Party

Introduction.

Attending a yacht party can be an exciting and glamorous experience, but it's important to dress appropriately for the occasion. Whether you're a seasoned yacht-goer or a first-timer, it's essential to understand the dress code and theme of the party to ensure you make the right impression. The first thing to consider when dressing for a yacht party is the theme of the event. If there is a specific theme, such as a nautical or tropical theme, it's important to incorporate elements of that theme into your outfit. This can be as simple as wearing a striped shirt or incorporating bright, tropical colors into your ensemble. Another important factor to consider is the location of the yacht party. If the party is taking place in a tropical location, lightweight and breathable fabrics are a must. Opt for cotton or linen materials that will keep you cool and comfortable in the heat. On the other hand, if the party is taking place in a cooler climate, layering options such as a light jacket or sweater may be necessary. It's also important to consider whether or not there is a specific dress code for the yacht party. If there is, be sure to adhere to it and dress accordingly. If not, classic yacht party attire such as nautical stripes, boat shoes, and khaki pants are always a safe bet. Finally, don't forget to accessorize your outfit to complete the look. Statement sunglasses, a sun hat, and a beach bag are all great options to consider. When it comes to footwear, boat shoes, sandals, or espadrilles are appropriate choices. It's important to avoid wearing heels or anything that may damage the deck of the yacht. In conclusion, dressing for a yacht party can be a fun and exciting experience. By considering the theme of the party, the location, and the dress code (if there is one), you can ensure that you make the right impression and feel confident in your outfit. Remember to have fun with your outfit choices while still being mindful of the occasion.

Table of Content

Consider the venue, accessories, men's attire.

When deciding what to wear to a yacht party, it's important to consider the venue. The location of the party can greatly influence your outfit choice. If the party is taking place in a tropical location, you'll want to opt for light and breezy fabrics that will keep you cool in the heat. Think flowy sundresses, linen pants, and cotton shirts. Bright colors and bold prints are also a great choice for a tropical yacht party. On the other hand, if the party is taking place in a cooler climate, you'll want to dress in layers to stay warm. A light jacket or sweater paired with a dress or pants and a blouse is a great option. Neutral colors like navy, white, and beige are perfect for a cooler climate yacht party. It's also important to consider the type of yacht you'll be on. If the yacht is more casual, you can get away with a more relaxed outfit. However, if the yacht is more formal, you'll want to dress accordingly. Always check with the host or hostess to see if there is a specific dress code for the party. Overall, when considering the venue for a yacht party, it's important to dress for the weather and the type of yacht you'll be on. When it comes to footwear for a yacht party, it's important to strike a balance between style and practicality. While you want to look fashionable and put-together, you also need to consider the fact that you'll be spending time on a boat. This means that you'll need to choose shoes that are comfortable, slip-resistant, and won't damage the deck of the yacht. One classic option for both men and women is the boat shoe. These shoes are designed with a non-slip sole and are made from materials that can withstand exposure to water. They also have a preppy, nautical look that is perfect for a yacht party. For women, sandals or espadrilles are also a great choice. Look for styles with a low heel or flat sole to ensure that you can move around the boat with ease. It's important to avoid wearing heels or anything with a sharp or pointed sole. These types of shoes can easily damage the deck of the yacht, which is not only a faux pas but can also be dangerous. Additionally, you'll want to avoid shoes that are too casual, such as flip-flops or sneakers. While these may be comfortable, they don't quite fit the dress code for a yacht party. When choosing footwear for a yacht party, it's also important to consider the color and style of your outfit. If you're wearing a bold or patterned dress, for example, you may want to opt for neutral-colored shoes to balance out the look. On the other hand, if you're wearing a simple outfit, you can add a pop of color or texture with your shoes. Overall, the key to choosing footwear for a yacht party is to prioritize comfort and practicality while still looking stylish. With the right shoes, you'll be able to enjoy the party without worrying about slipping or damaging the yacht.

What to Wear on A Yacht Dinner- Party In Style 2022

You scored an invite to a yacht party, Lucky you! Well, the next question in most people’s minds is usually ‘What do I wear,’ you don’t want to look out of place. It’s important to look and feel good while going out, and a yacht party is no different.

While for most of us choosing what to wear can be a bit intimidating, you don’t need designer wear to look good. A simple attire plus accessories can just do the trick but, always have in mind that in a boat, safety is paramount and that even includes clothing.

As a guest, you must behave and dress appropriately. For this article, we are going to delve deeper and provide a detailed guide on what you should wear on a yacht dinner, especially for night events. So, let’s fire away!

Yacht Clubwear Don’ts

Yacht club attires can vary from time to time, depending on the vent and the time of the day. Regardless, some clothing just is not acceptable regardless of how good or chic you might look on them.

For those who care about how they appear, here are some of the attires that you should always avoid:

During any mealtime, this rule applies everywhere, and a yacht dinner is no exception. Even though going to the beach, you might feel like walking bare feet, but it’s unhygienic, I always recommend wearing closed-toe shoes or sturdy sandals.

Torn or worn clothing

An attire showing signs of being torn or worn out, a loose button is a no-no! And should be left at home.

Baseball hats or other hats

When it comes to hats, Yachts’ have a preference for men removing their caps while aboard, and you can save yourself the shame of being turned away by not wearing them.

Undershirts

When choosing what shirt to wear, you might to be a little bit careful. For men, a collared shirt is appropriate, while if you feel like going casual, a polo shirt will do the trick. Tank tops for both women and men can be a little bit too skimpy as they don’t hide underwear and can be right for other occasions.

Attires for different events

Dance party.

For an evening dance party, you can go for casual nightclothes. The material of the clothing is very important; its fabric must be flowy, soft, and thin. We all know how chilly it getsnight, and Light jacket is acceptable.

For men, you can go for comfortable jeans, pants or khaki. You should accompany your pants with casual polo or a dress shirt; both options will make you look stunning and fashionable; for outwear, a light jacket is recommended.

For footwear, to complement your outfit, a Sperry men boat shoes should do the trick. Also, a non-marking shoe can go with any outfit that you decide to wear that night.

Note, a dance party is a casual affair, and wearing formal footwear is not suitable for that particular type of event.

For ladies, waist dresses and skirt with flounces is the perfect option. You can also wear colorful tops and loose pants, giving you that summer vibe, especially if the night is a bit warm.

If you want to look cuter and more girlish, you can wear a wrap or jacket that matches the colors of your outfit. You can also wear; long assorted dresses and you can pair them with earrings. However, it’s vital to avoid heavy make-up or a lot of jewelry; remember you need to look presentable for the event

For footwear, you can decide to go with flats or low-heeled sandals as they match with any type of outfit. Ladies, please avoid high-heels as they are not suitable for dancing and you want to avoid falling overboard .

Cocktail party

Cocktail attire is a bit dressier but not as formal as black-tie. For men, you can wear dress slacks together with a tie and matching jacket; you can also go with a full suit, but remember the color should be neutral or subdued rather than bright colors.

For accessories, you can go with matching footwear and a black leather belt. When it comes to shoes, you should go for black/brown leather shoes that match your belt, or Oxford styled shoes.

Loafers can also give you an attractive appearance. Here is something you should pay close attention to; your socks should match the color of your pants.

For ladies, their cocktail dresses must be mid-length or knee-length made of the subtle or solid fabric print. When it comes to the choice of color, you might want to tone it down a bit; a black dress is a perfect choice.

Another trend that is slowly gaining popularity is the women’s pantsuit. When it comes to accessorizing invest in quality jewelry, go for a singular piece statement and a clutch bag. Always avoid shoulder bags as they don’t go with the ambiance of the event.

When it comes to shoes, sandals or flats is the best choice as it will allow you to light up the dancefloor.

Business party/dinner

Whether you are meeting your workmates or going for business functions regardless of the time, evening wear is not recommended. For most parties, the dress code is usually business-casual, which tells you its more about professionalism than glamour.

When it comes to shirt options, you can wear a polo shirt or button-down that matches your khaki pants. For outwear selections, you can go to a sports coat, blazer, or sweater that can either be brown or black. Other Yacht clubs may specify you dress casually or smart.

For footwear, you can put on oxfords, flat or loafers; they are all gorgeous options.

For ladies, there are plenty of options. You can wear dress pants, a skirt or wrap dress with a long-sleeved dress that will give you a chic and elegant appearance.

When it comes to accessories, don’t overdo it; go for low-key bangles, necklaces, or earrings. On your feet, ballet flats or kitten heel are more appropriate options to go for.

Dinner party

Dinner attire is dependent on the cruise line the company’s dress code; some cruise lines may give a general guideline while others may insist on a specific outfit while others may leave that to decide for yourself.

Well, but always keep in mind that a dinner party may range anywhere from casual, resort casual, formal, or semi-formal. Depending on the stipulated guideline, you may choose what to wear.

As for gents, the formal evening outfit may include a dark suit that matches your footwear; you can also go for a tuxedo with a plain official shirt. The plain shirt should always match your pants. One of the don’ts for the dinner party is boat shoes, khakis, and polo shirts.

For the casual dress code, you can wear khakis, golf shirts, and button-ups. When it comes to footwear, you’ll never go wrong with tennis or oxford shoes; you can also accentuate your outfit by wearing a bright cardigan or pullover.

For casual dinners, the dress code is something non-collared shirts, jeans, and sneakers. You can also wear a t-shirt if the dress guideline stipulates so.

For formal dinner, women are advised to go for a Whole-length gown with nicely done hair and quality jewelry, and kitten heels will make you look like a princess. You can also go with black or white knee-length skirts and long-sleeved tops that will match your kitten heels.

When it comes to a semi-formal dinner, you can decide to go with a cocktail dress with sandals. Other attires that are appropriate for the night include capris, sundresses, knee-length skirts.

As for your feet, flip flops and stilettos are suited for the event. For a casual evening dinner, you can wear a pair of sneakers, jeans, and t-shirts. Not that swimwear’s and tank tops are too revealing and may not be suitable for the night.

Yacht attire for kids

When it comes to kids’ clothing, they should also conform to the yacht stipulated guidelines for grownups. Who wouldn’t want their kids looking dashing like the parents, we all do? You can dress your kids in the same outfit as yourself.

Final word

For a yacht dinner, different events require a variety of outfits or attires. For those going on a date night, you should always strive to adhere to the guidelines and wear something attractive that will make you feel bold, confident, and beautiful.

Whether it’s a formal or casual evening dinner, we have extensively discussed various outfits and provided quick tips that will help you come up with a perfect dinner yacht outfit. A good-looking outfit is a recipe for an enjoyable night out.

Now that you are fully aware of the attires and outfits that can be work to different events go out there and have fun. Cheers!

What to Wear to a Yacht Wedding? [yacht club wedding attire]

Dressing for a yacht wedding can be both fun and challenging at the same time. On one hand, you have the opportunity to wear something unique and on the other hand, there are some definite do’s and don’ts when it comes to dressing for a yacht wedding. In this post, we’ll take a look at what to wear on land and what to bring with you when you’re cruising on the high seas!

Yacht Club Wedding Attire

Consider the time of year, weather, and location.

When choosing what to wear to a yacht wedding, it’s important to consider the time of year, weather, and location. If the wedding is taking place in the summertime, you can wear lighter fabrics like cotton or linen. However, if the wedding is taking place in the fall or winter, you’ll want to opt for something a little warmer like wool or cashmere.

The weather will play a part in determining what you’ll wear to the wedding too. It can get very hot outside during the summer months, so something breezy would be appropriate. However, if it’s during the wintertime and there’s snow on the ground, opt for something heavy like down instead.

The location of the wedding is also important to consider. If the yacht is docked in a busy city, you’ll want to dress accordingly. However, if the yacht is sailing in open water, you can dress more casually.

Accessories

When it comes to accessories, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind. First, you’ll want to avoid wearing accessories that are too casual. This look will clash with the occasion’s dress code, so save your beach cover-up for another day.

Instead, opt for necklaces and earrings that are suitable for formal occasions. You can also wear bracelets if there aren’t any stipulations regarding visible body jewelry.

As for shoes, you’ll want to choose something dressy and elegant. If the wedding is taking place on land, you can wear heels. However, if the wedding is taking place on a yacht, it might be better to wear flats so you don’t have to worry about slipping and falling.

Choose a color scheme that matches your personality

When it comes to choosing a color scheme, you’ll want to think about your personality. If you’re the type of person who loves to stand out, you can choose a bold color like red or green. However, if you prefer to stick to neutrals, black, white , and gray are always safe choices.

No matter what color you choose to wear, you’ll want to make sure your outfit coordinates with the rest of the bridal party. If there’s a theme, try wearing colors that match it. For example, if the wedding has a nautical theme, blue and white would be appropriate.

Dress for comfort - this is a long day!

A yacht wedding can be a lot of fun, but it’s also a long day. You’ll want to dress for comfort, so choose something you’ll feel good in all day long. That might mean a flowy dress for women or a comfortable suit for men.

Choose a color that pops

Since you’ll be spending most of the day outside, it’s a good idea to choose a color that pops. This will make you stand out against the background of the ocean and the yachts. Bold colors like red, orange and yellow are perfect dresses for this type of wedding .

Be mindful of what you wear to avoid spills on your clothes or shoes

This seems like a really obvious tip, but the best way to keep your clothes from getting ruined is by simply dressing appropriately.

Don’t wear anything you particularly love if someone spills champagne on it, you will not be pleased! We recommend sticking to neutrals rather than going for bold colors or patterns that may easily pick up dirt or food stains. It’s the unfortunate truth that the risk of spills is high at a yacht wedding, so always dress accordingly.

But also keep in mind what you will be standing on

Wedding boats are usually on the smaller side, so they can get crowded quickly. Don’t wear heels that you can’t walk or stand in and watch where you step not only will you run the risk of falling, but for other reasons, we’ll discuss below.

Wear closed-toed shoes

You may find yourself standing on a boat deck all night long without ever getting into the water (and that’s great!), but there is always a possibility that your feet could get wet.

Plus, there’s the chance you’ll be walking on slippery surfaces or in areas where there may be a lot of seaweed both of which are easier navigated with closed-toe shoes.

If you’re not into the idea of wearing anything other than your favorite pair of sandals, then go for it but you might want to bring a backup pair of shoes (and socks!) just in case.

What to wear on a yacht dinner

  • Occasional Outfits

If you’re anything like me, the mere mention of a yacht dinner makes you feel like a sophisticated socialite from a James Bond film. But let’s be real; choosing an outfit for a yacht dinner can be tricky.

Do I go for casual and chic or formal and fabulous? And what shoes do I wear that won’t get stuck in the boat’s wooden planks?

As a seasoned yacht dinner attendee (okay, maybe I’ve only been to one, but let’s just pretend), I’m here to share some outfit suggestions that will have you looking like a million bucks on the high seas.

So, let’s set sail and dive into the world of yacht dinner fashion, shall we?

Dress Code Guidelines for Yacht Dinners

When it comes to yacht dinners, dressing appropriately is vital. Yacht dinners can range from formal events to more casual affairs, so it’s important to know what dress code you’re working with before choosing an outfit.

Here are some common dress codes for yacht dinners and some examples of appropriate and inappropriate outfits for each:

I. Formal Dress Code

If you’re attending a formal yacht dinner, it’s time to break out the fancy attire. Think of long dresses, gowns, and suits. Some appropriate outfit options for a formal yacht dinner include:

  • A floor-length gown or cocktail dress with statement jewelry and heels
  • A tuxedo with a bow tie and dress shoes

On the other hand, some inappropriate outfit choices for a formal yacht dinner include:

  • Short dresses, crop tops, or skirts that are too casual for the occasion
  • Sneakers or sandals

II. Casual Dress Code

A casual yacht dinner is a more relaxed affair, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still look chic. Here are some appropriate outfit options for a casual yacht dinner:

  • A sundress or skirt with flat sandals or espadrilles
  • Slacks or chinos with a collared shirt and loafers or boat shoes

Some inappropriate outfit choices for a casual yacht dinner include:

  • Athletic wear or workout clothes
  • Flip flops or beach sandals

By understanding the dress code guidelines for yacht dinners, you can ensure that you’re dressed appropriately and ready to have a good time on the high seas. But what other factors should you consider when choosing an outfit for a yacht dinner? Let’s find out in the next section.

Factors to Consider

Now that we’ve got a handle on yacht dinner dress codes, it’s time to talk about the factors that can influence your outfit choice. Regarding yacht dinners, there are a few things to consider to ensure you’re appropriately dressed for the occasion. Here are some factors to keep in mind:

The Type of Yacht Dinner

First, you’ll want to consider the type of yacht dinner you’ll be attending. Is it a formal event, like a charity gala or a wedding reception? Or is it a more casual affair, like a sunset cruise with friends?

The dress code will likely vary depending on the type of event, so make sure you know what you’re getting into.

The Location of the Yacht Dinner

The location of the yacht dinner can also play a role in your outfit choice. If it’s a dinner party in a marina, you might want to dress a bit more formally than if it’s a laid-back beach BBQ on the yacht.

Keep the weather and climate in mind when selecting your outfit. You don’t want to be shivering in a sleeveless dress or sweating in a heavy suit.

The Time of Day of the Yacht Dinner

Last but not least, the time of day of the yacht dinner can affect what you should wear. A daytime cruise might call for a more casual outfit, while an evening dinner party might call for something more formal.

Pay attention to the invitation and any dress code instructions to ensure you’re dressed appropriately.

What to Wear on a Yacht Dinner

Alright, sailors, now let’s get down to the important stuff – what to wear on a yacht dinner! We’ve covered the dress code guidelines and factors to consider, so now it’s time to dive into the fun part: outfit suggestions.

Below, I’ll be sharing some of my favorite looks for women and men, so let’s start with the ladies first:

Outfit Suggestions for Women

Whether you’re attending a formal charity gala or a casual sunset cruise, there’s a perfect outfit for every yacht dinner occasion. Let’s look at some outfit suggestions for women that will make you look fabulous on the high seas.

1. Formal Yacht Dinner Outfit Suggestions

You’ll want to go all out with your outfit for a formal yacht dinner. Think long dresses or gowns, statement jewelry, and elegant heels. Here are a few outfit ideas to get you started:

The Classic Black Gown

You can never go wrong with a classic black gown. Choose one with a fitted bodice and a flowing skirt for a timeless look. Add some sparkle with a statement necklace and earrings, and finish off the outfit with black heels.

Chic Jumpsuit

If you’re not a fan of dresses, a chic jumpsuit can be a great alternative for a formal yacht dinner. Choose one in a luxurious fabric, like silk or velvet, and pair it with strappy heels and statement earrings.

Floral Maxi Dress

For a more whimsical look, opt for a floral maxi dress in a light, flowy fabric. Choose a dress with a high-low hemline to show off your strappy heels. Add some sparkle with a statement bracelet or ring.

Shimmering Gold Dress

Make a statement in a shimmering gold dress that will catch the light just right as you cruise into the sunset.

2. Casual Yacht Dinner Outfit Suggestions

For a more laid-back yacht dinner, you can afford to be a bit more casual with your outfit. Think sundresses, skirts, and flat sandals or espadrilles. Here are some outfit ideas to inspire you:

Boho Maxi Skirt

For a boho chic look, pair a flowing maxi skirt with a simple tank top or blouse. Add some fringe sandals and a statement necklace to complete the look.

Linen Sundress

A linen sundress is perfect for a casual yacht dinner. Choose one in a light, breathable fabric and pair it with minimal jewelry and espadrilles.

Jumpsuit Romper

A jumpsuit romper is a perfect choice for a casual yacht dinner. Choose one in a playful print or bright color, and pair it with strappy sandals and minimal jewelry.

Flowy Midi Dress

A flowy midi dress is a great choice for a casual yacht dinner. Pair it with some comfortable sandals and minimal jewelry for a relaxed yet stylish look.

Striped Skirt and Blouse

A striped skirt paired with a simple blouse is a classic and stylish choice. Add some espadrilles and a cute clutch to complete the look.

Outfit Suggestions for Men

When it comes to men’s dressing for a yacht dinner, it’s important to strike the right balance between casual and formal. So, whether you’re attending a black-tie event or a more laid-back affair, here are some outfit suggestions for men:

For a formal yacht dinner, you’ll want to dress to the nines. Think tuxedos or suits, dress shoes, dress shirts, and ties or bow ties. Here are a few outfit ideas to get you started:

Classic Tuxedo

You can’t go wrong with a classic tuxedo for a formal yacht dinner. Choose one with a fitted jacket and trousers, and pair it with a crisp white dress shirt, black dress shoes, and a bow tie.

Three-Piece Suit

For a more modern take on formal wear, try a three-piece suit. Choose one in a neutral color, like navy or charcoal, and pair it with a white dress shirt, black dress shoes, and a tie in a complementary color.

Navy Blazer and Slacks

If you’re not a fan of full suits, a navy blazer and slacks can be a great alternative for a formal yacht dinner. Pair them with a white dress shirt, black dress shoes, and a patterned tie for a touch of personality.

Black Suit with Colorful Accessories

For a more playful look, pair a black suit with colorful accessories. Think a patterned dress shirt, a colorful pocket square, and a fun tie or bow tie.

For a more casual yacht dinner, you can afford to be a bit more relaxed with your outfit. Think slacks or chinos, collared shirts, and loafers or boat shoes. Here are some outfit ideas to inspire you:

Chinos and a Polo

For a classic, preppy look, pair chinos with a polo shirt in a complementary color. Add some boat shoes or loafers and a leather belt to complete the outfit.

Linen Button-Down and Shorts

For a more laid-back look, opt for a linen button-down shirt paired with shorts in a fun pattern or color. Finish off the look with boat shoes or sneakers.

Shorts and Collared Shirt

If it’s a particularly hot day, shorts can be a great option for a casual yacht dinner. Choose a pair in a neutral color, like khaki or navy, and pair them with a collared shirt in a complementary color. Add some boat shoes to finish off the outfit.

Colored Slacks and a White Shirt

For a more stylish look, pair colored slacks in a fun shade, like light blue or coral, with a crisp white dress shirt. Finish off the look with brown loafers or boat shoes.

Accessories to Complete the Look

Accessories are the icing on the cake when it comes to completing your yacht dinner outfit. They can add a pop of color, a touch of sophistication, or just that extra bit of style that sets you apart from the crowd.

So, without further ado, let’s talk about some accessories that can help you complete your yacht dinner look!

For women, a clutch or small crossbody bag can be a great choice for a formal yacht dinner. Opt for a neutral color like black, white, or metallic to complement your outfit. For a more casual dinner, a tote or beach bag can be a practical choice to hold your essentials.

For men, a leather briefcase or messenger bag can be a great option for a formal yacht dinner. For a more casual dinner, a canvas tote or backpack can be a practical choice to hold your essentials.

A pair of sunglasses can not only protect your eyes from the sun but also add a stylish touch to your outfit. For women, oversized or cat-eye sunglasses can be a great choice for a formal or casual yacht dinner. For men, aviator or wayfarer sunglasses can be a classic choice.

A hat can be a great accessory for a yacht dinner, especially if you’ll be spending time in the sun.

For women, a wide-brimmed hat can add a touch of glamor to a formal yacht dinner outfit. For a more casual dinner, a straw hat or baseball cap can be a practical and stylish choice.

For men, a fedora or Panama hat can be a great accessory for a formal or casual yacht dinner.

For women, statement jewelry can be a great way to elevate a formal yacht dinner outfit. Think chandelier earrings or a bold necklace. For a casual event, simple jewelry like stud earrings or a delicate necklace can be a good choice. For men, a watch can be a great accessory to complement a yacht dinner outfit.

Final Thoughts

We’ve reached the end of our yacht dinner outfit journey, and I hope you’ve found this guide both informative and entertaining. From understanding dress codes to picking the perfect accessories, it’s important to keep in mind the factors that come into play when dressing for a yacht dinner.

Remember, whether you prefer a formal long dress or a casual sundress, the key is to feel confident and comfortable in your outfit. And who knows, with the right outfit and accessories, you might just become the talk of the yacht!

So, grab your favorite nautical-inspired piece and set sail in style. Cheers to a fabulous yacht dinner ahead!

Cool Cruiser

Hello. Going on my first MSC cruise soon and we are booked in a Yacht Club suite. Question regarding the private restaurant for Yacht Club guests. What is the attire for dinner? Can you go fairly casual (like shorts) or do we need to plan for something a little nicer like slacks or a dress?

I like what MSC puts on their Daily Program when it comes to Suggested Evening Dress: Gala

"On Gala Night, dress to impress! Whether that means a tuxedo, suit and tie, evening gown or cocktail dress, or perhaps it's your very best jeans and polo shirt, your attire should fit your own level of elegance.  Please note that: shorts, flip flops, tank-tops and t-shirts are not welcomed in the main dining rooms, lounges, and theatre."

However, depending on the cruise and the restaurant staff we have seen all sorts of varying degrees of undress allowed into the restaurants. 'Class is as class does'.

I will add that in some of the dailies the dress is deemed “casual” and  I’ve also seen “smart casual”. On casual nights shorts were no problem for men or women. Smart casual was long pants for men and pretty much anything goes for women. I didn’t see any shorts on gala night.    On our final night (Seaside) a grown man wore shorts and a ball cap to dinner and they allowed it. I was very disappointed in the cap. Dressy shorts on men have their place. Call me old fashioned, but a ball cap at dinner is just tacky and unrefined. IMO.

Gotta agree with Tony on this one!   😂

In addition to the previously mentioned policy for Gala Night, MSC's website FAQs includes the following under the heading of Dress Restrictions: "Specific restrictions may be enforced by onboard staff members including restaurant hostesses and management. At no point is swimwear allowed in any formal dining venue for any meal, including breakfast and lunch. Shorts, flip flops, and tank tops are not allowed for Evening Wear or Gala Night in the Main Dining Rooms, Specialty Restaurants, or MSC Yacht Club. T-shirts are not allowed to be worn for Gala Night. Dress code rules that are posted outside the buffet should be followed." It is quite true MSC often ignores their own stated dress policies. It is also quite true cruisers have been discreetly asked to return to their room and change clothes. Ultimately, the choice to play it safe or not is up to you.

Thank you for the information, very helpful!

In my experience, it is up to the staff at the dining venue. I've seen shorts and flip-flops at dinner and nothing is said and on the same cruise seen a person with a similar outfit asked to return in different attire.

If you plan for something a little nicer then you don't risk being turned away. The dress code does state 'no shorts'. You may or may not be turned away, both are possible.

Good recommendation, thank you.

On the Meraviglia a couple of weeks ago the only night they really enforced a dress code was Gala night.

We were on Seascape the week of July 30.

I mostly wore slacks or jeans to dinner, but did wear nice shorts at least one night, with no issue.

One day at lunch a guy shows up in a tank top, he had to put on a different shirt.

Gala night , some dressed to the nines, some dressed casual.

On my last cruise women could get way with anything for breakfast and lunch in the MDR (sandals and a spaghetti strap top), but men were asked to change if wearing a tank top or sandals.

Heartgrove

I'm sure that you can fit one pair of trousers into your suitcase to wear in the dining room.

Morgsmom

It REALLY depends on the Dining Room Mgr/Maitre D'.  I've seen gents turned away for wearing shorts, and others sporting ball caps in the dining room at dinner  🤢

DCGuy64

To quote an old Fat Albert character, "you're like an out-of-work teacher: no class." 😁 (Referring to repeat dress code violators)

Just got off the Seaside- it was all over the place.  We wore sundresses for the ladies and golf shorts/shirts for the men.  It was pretty casual, overall.  I did see one lady wearing a swimsuit and coverup to dinner and was surprised they didn't say anything.  Lots of t-shirts and flip flops though- nobody said anything.  I don't know what ship you are on, but I will say that the staff in the Seaside YC were outstanding.

Dressing casual in a well-heeled environment can be tricky. However, with a little planning and some fashion know-how it's easy to look sharp and while remaining appropriate for the setting, including yacht club casual dress.

Know What to Avoid

Rules vary from one yacht club to the next, so feel free to the check the club's official website or give them a call to ask questions about their specific rules. However, most yacht clubs bar attendees from wearing jeans (with certain exceptions) and certainly ratty or torn ones; some might allow members to wear nice denim for special occasions or in select areas of the club. T-shirts (like those for a sports team or school), sneakers and shorts are also commonly seen on the list of banned items.

Stick to "Smart Casual"

Shopping woman trying clothes

ariwasabi/iStock/Getty Images

Smart casual dress is just what it sounds like--relaxed and casual, but with a nod toward style and looking good, not sloppy and overly relaxed. A member of the smart crowd is elegant, sophisticated and fashionable...in essence, smart casual means that you dress professionally, but you are relaxed. It is a middle ground between strict business or formal wear and street clothes."

Men's Fashion

Men adhering to a smart casual code should wear a collared shirt, but don't need to add a necktie. Khakis or similar slacks (ironed, of course) can take the place of jeans and are just about as comfortable. A polo shirt or plaid button-up will look good and align with yacht club standards. Accessorize with a leather belt and shoes.

Women's Clothes

Women should lean toward nice dresses which are classy and stylish, but not overly provocative; avoid cleavage-revealing, tight attire that would be more suited to a flashy nightspot than the proper environs of a yacht club. Women may also wear slacks with a nice top--perhaps a lightweight sweater in the spring or a collared, knit polo in the summer. Avoid sneakers and use a few accessories to tie the outfit together, like a silk scarf or a nice bracelet.

Children and Other Circumstances

Portrait of girl with mother holding flower bouquet, white background, differential focus

Consult with a yacht club beforehand if bringing kids. Little ones are usually exempt from dress code rules, yet it's easy enough to put children into comfortable clothes just this side of dressy. Make sure children's clothes are clean, free of holes and stains and that their hair is well-groomed. For adults wanting to really dress down, check to see if the yacht club has a day for "porthole casual," during which jeans and tees are acceptable, but even then, make sure clothes are clean and well-fitted.

The Vogue Guide to Formal Attire

By Shelby Ying Hyde

The Vogue Guide to Formal Attire

There’s nothing quite like the mini stomach flip that comes from seeing the words “formal attire” printed on an invitation . First comes the excitement of having an opportunity to get all dolled up. Then, the panic of not knowing what that really means.

By today’s standards, the lines can get a bit blurry, especially with all the subsect requirements; see also, ‘beach formal’ . To help clear up any confusion, formal attire is usually reserved for evening events–though like anything else there are exceptions. Aside from weddings or the occasional gala, there are many reasons why one would need formal attire in their arsenal. We’re in the age of opulent birthday, holiday, and niche-themed parties being the norm on social media, some of which require a more polished dress code.

One of the first things to note is that there are levels to formal attire and understanding the differences will go a long way. There’s semi-formal, which is often conflated with cocktail dress codes . Whereas, formal as a blanket term is considered slightly less elevated than black tie and the more rare, ‘ white tie ’ requirements–unless noted otherwise by the host of the event, of course. (In instances like this, the exact requirements are usually explicitly stated on the invitation or save the date.)

When it comes to the history of formal attire, much like any other dress code, its roots are rich. According to Jovani , the way of dress is riddled with aristocratic and military-inspired details. “These two sources have shaped the way formal wear is designed and worn today, from the fabrics used to the silhouettes and colors. Traditional elements of formal wear have been adapted to fit modern trends, creating a timeless look.” Its earliest beginnings can be traced back to 19th Century Europe and America with origins linked to one George Bryan “Beau” Brummell –who Gentleman's Gazette calls the first ever menswear influencer. A dandy by trade, he’s revered for his friendship with George Prince of Wales and innovative style that we now acknowledge as formal wear.

The upper class began sporting this more elevated attire for evening events–this included dark colors like the more traditional shades of black and blue. Men were wearing corsets and short dresses with skinny trousers underneath–most women wore the latter, too. Over time, as the concept of formal wear evolved so did the pieces themselves. The almost theatrical approach, complete with powder white wigs, opulent outerwear and hosiery, eventually turned into double-breasted coats, and trousers with stripes. Style in the 1920s further solidified this subtle shift towards simplicity. Hemlines continued to rise, with the start of World War I and the women’s suffrage movement.

By World War II formal attire looked completely different than it had during the Regency Era nearly a century before. Famed designers like Coco Chanel and revolutionized formal clothing with inventions like the ‘little black dress ’ and Christian Dior’s ‘New Look’ era. Then, thanks to the boom in the ready-to-wear market and department stores, evening wear was becoming more affordable which meant it was no longer reserved for the rich. This accessibility aided in the development of dress codes as a social norm, particularly as it pertains to the special occasions on our calendars. Most interestingly, though, is the ways in which formal attire has adapted to fit the needs of society at the time.

Tbilisi-born designer David Koma further confirmed these sentiments, adding that these changes in the formal wear market were in direct response to the shift in cultural dynamics and forever changing consumer preferences. “While traditional notions of elegance and sophistication remain timeless, there has been a noticeable shift towards more diverse and inclusive representations of beauty and femininity,” he explains. “Designers are increasingly embracing innovative techniques and diverse perspectives to meet the evolving needs.”

In the present day, the requirements for evening wear are relatively straightforward once you understand what type of formality you’re working with. At a base level, women should opt for dresses that fall well below the knee; in some cases a floor or ankle-length option might be more appropriate. However, if a free-flowing frock isn’t your thing, a sharply-tailored suit has proved to be a great options for both men and women–think of the posh Dior tuxedo that Sarah Jessica Parker ’s character Carrie Bradshaw wore in the opening scenes of the second Sex and the City movie, with platform stilettos nonetheless. A jumpsuit with capped sleeves or thick shoulder straps, as well as full ball skirts a lá Kendall Jenner at the Met Gala , are also suitable alternatives.

Unless you’re attending a beach ceremony, we suggest steering clear of fabrics like cotton-poplin or gauzy linen, as it has a casualness about it that will appear out of place in more traditional settings. In its place, consider more stately materials like tulle or duchess satin and crepe de chine. Embellishments aren’t necessarily a stipulation but are encouraged if you want to stand out. Sequin beads and delicate embroidery are some of the most common adornments–though feathers and fil-coupe are thrown in the mix from time to time, as well. For Koma, this attention to details is paramount when crafting modern-day formal pieces. “Every stitch, every seam, and every embellishment is meticulously considered to ensure that each garment exudes a sense of sophistication and refinement while instilling confidence and empowerment in the wearer,” he explains.

When it comes to outfit accompaniments, clutch bags are meant to fit comfortably under your arm as your schmooze, while still offering just enough space for your evening essentials. Judith Lieber is great for kitschy, Swarovski statement clutches in novelty designs; Nina has been making collections of formal-friendly bags and shoes from luxe looking materials like satin since 1953. In terms of footwear, stilettos are an obvious choice, though you shouldn’t immediately write off a short kitten heel and the wearability it offers–especially when dancing is imminent.

To Koma, formal attire is transformative and empowers the wearer, "imbuing them with a sense of confidence and grace. Whether it's the fluidity of movement, the precision of tailoring, or the unexpected embellishments that catch the eye, a truly great [piece] leaves a lasting impression.”
