Boat of the Week: This Sleek 184-Foot Superyacht Is an Otherworldly Homage to Burning Man

The 184-foot Benetti Galaxy has one of the wildest interiors ever on any superyacht

The worlds of the desert festival, Burning Man, and superyachting may not seem like a natural fit, but the owners and designers of 184-foot Galaxy successfully made those worlds collide—and, in the process, showed how yacht design can be a lot more creative, and fast.

The five-month refit of Galaxy —a 2005 Benetti —was not only unusually speedy for a superyacht, but signals the emergence of a new kind of yachting, a clean-slate design that gave the owners the fantasyland interior that they wanted. Typically, most interior refits involve only cosmetic changes, and from the exterior, Galaxy looks almost painfully cookie-cutter. But inside, the bold, bespoke look may inspire others to follow their wildest dreams, rather than staying safe with a conventional design.

Njord by Bergman Design House created the eclectic interior. The refit was done by Monaco Marine and GM Group at the La Ciotat yard in France. “ Galaxy isn’t just another white superyacht on the French Riviera,” says Sarah Colbon, co-founder of the London-based design firm. “The yacht is its own out-of-world destination that touches all your senses and excites and embraces you with its energy.”

Burning Man is an annual gathering that takes place in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. It’s a mix of art, music and free expression that embraces individual creativity, no matter what that looks like. And it can look pretty wild. At the end of the festival is the ritual burning of “The Man,” a tall effigy made of wood. Galaxy ‘s owners, a leading American video-games developer and his partner, are frequent attendees. They were inspired by the festival and a love of entertaining, says Colbon, to create an “alternate universe.”

The expansive main deck has been transformed into a giant “floating private member’s club,” with bespoke décor and alternatively moody and brightly colored artwork. “The Thinker” by contemporary artist Joseph Klibansky reimagines Rodin’s classic sculpture as an astronaut, and there are also paintings by Camille Hannah and wall coverings by digital artist Dylan Cole, known for Disney’s Avatar and Maleficent .

The wallpaper is Cole’s first static project. “He’s never done this before, but he appreciated the concept of Galaxy and loved the sound of the owners,” says Colbon. “So he agreed to create the owners’ own Avatar world onboard.” If you look closely, you’ll spot secret creatures and “ET” aliens hidden in the otherworldly scenes that Cole created.

The upper deck is all about calmness and serenity. Even the floors are designed to stimulate feel-good endorphins.  Courtesy Njord by Bergman

While the main deck is a nightclub that would look right at home on some alien world, the upper deck is designed for the opposite effect. It features a lounge and dining space for 12 guests which is “super calm,” according to the designer.

“What’s wonderful about Galaxy is you can switch it on and off,” says Colbon. “You can go from the ultimate club space with RGB lighting, party vibes and a DJ stand, to the serene upper deck where you can connect with your senses.”

When they’re done for the day, guests can retire to suites which have been named and styled after other planets. “We’ve designed Venus and Saturn with beautiful light pearls and golds, while Mars has these striking earthy red tones,” says Colbon. “Rather than being gimmicky, we’ve respected the colors and sensibilities of the planets.”

The master suite is even more bespoke: The bed’s headboard is designed with a metal bronze effect with tiny LED lights that create a star-gazing platform. The owners’ star signs also come through as the brighter lights, while their friends’ star signs are dimmer lights. On the ceiling is the owners’ favorite constellation.

The centerpieces of the yacht are the stairwell and elevator areas, hand-painted with an ombre, galaxy-toned effect.

Galaxy is filled with special features, including adjustable RGB lighting and smart materials like a specially engineered flooring. Colbon says that’s a world first for a superyacht. “The tight ripple effect stimulates the nerve endings on your feet when you walk on it and triggers endorphins to make you super relaxed,” she says. “It also looks like the ocean with tiny waves crashing on top of each other.”

The crew thought it was crazy to use this surface as flooring, says Colbon. “But they understand now.”

The five-month turnaround also seemed like a stretch, especially since it included a full exterior paint job, new name plates and a spa. And then there was the fantastical interior.

“This yacht shows how design can be done differently in every way,” says Colbon. “It ranges from a new type of owner to the ways that collaborations between the designers and yard can actually change the whole refit process. I think Galaxy is going to really shine.”

Positive Customer Review: "One of the most memorable parts for me was the launch. I went with my wife, and Benetti had a Roman Catholic priest bless the yacht. It was very beautiful with all the Italian music and then the British national anthem, and it was all very unexpected. I thought I was just going to be putting the boat in the water, but in fact it turned into a very emotional day!" - Owner of a Benetti called motor yacht 11:11

pierpaolo lazzarini’s colossea mega-yacht features a detachable airship upper-structure

The mega-yacht/airship nods to the historic n1 airship.

Measuring 204 meters (699 ft) in length, the Colossea mega-yacht is an itinerant floating docking station for a detachable airship. The project by Pierpaolo Lazzarini is a tribute to the N1 airship (later renamed Norge) which took off for its first test flight from Rome a century ago. With Colossea, Lazzarini reimagines its iconic design with the materials and technologies of today, proposing the same measurements with upgraded materials and propulsion. Entirely conceived to be built in carbon fiber from the internal structures to the exterior blimp surface, the airship will be moved by 8 electric engines, with its upper structure comprising a take-off/landing area shaped to the blimp’s form.

conceptualized by pierpaolo lazzarini

Italian designer Pierpaolo Lazzarini pays homage to the Norge, a semi-rigid Italian-built airship that, with an overflight on 12 May 1926, completed the first verified trip of any kind to the North Pole, as well as being the first aircraft to fly over the polar ice cap between Europe and America. Inside Colossea’s blimp, 22 isolated compartments host various installations such LH2 tanks (liquid hydrogen) batteries, cabins, and all internal structures. The overall volume of the carrier gas compartments have 30,000 mc which grants the aircraft enough space to release sufficient H2 into any compartment. The LH2 is released into the compartments to adjust the weight balancing needed and also as H2 reserve in case of gas loss.

The same LH2 is devoted to supplying the necessary energy requirement of each engine, capable of pushing the flying vessel to an estimated maximum speed of 165 km/h (about 90 knots), while the Yacht instead is pushed from 3 HTS engines on a maximum speed of 22 knots. Likewise, airship propellers can increase and support the efficiency of the sailing. The new airship with 10,000kg of payload and armament can now accommodate up to 24 passengers (plus 10 crew members), though instead, the yacht offers 22 dislocated guest suites and multiple deck with pools on the rear part for a total load capacity up to 44 guests and 20 crew members.

NASA's James Webb telescope spotted a strange 13 billion-year-old galaxy that shouldn't exist

  • NASA's James Webb Space Telescope spotted a 13 billion year old galaxy that defies understanding.
  • ZF-UDS-7329 seems to be bigger than the Milky Way, which scientists thought was impossible that early on.
  • The observation could upend what we know about how dark matter shaped the early universe.

Insider Today

NASA's new space telescope spotted a 13 billion-year-old galaxy that is much too complex to exist that early in the universe.

The galaxy, which is bigger than the Milky Way, could upheave what we know about how dark matter shaped the early universe.

Scientists had been tracking the galaxy, called ZF-UDS-7329, for a while, but they had never been able to get a close enough look, Karl Glazebrook, an astronomer at the Swinburne University of Technology who led the team, said in a statement .

With the James Webb Space Telescope , they were finally able to peer at the galaxy about 11.5 billion years in our past. Light travels at a fixed speed through space, so the image of these early galaxies in the past is only reaching us now.

The team found that ZF-UDS-7329 seemed much more advanced than was previously thought possible.

It looked to contain about four times as many stars by mass as the Milky Way. These stars also looked ancient, about 1.5 billion years old, suggesting the galaxy is about 13 billion years old.

According to current cosmology models, that should not be possible because dark matter is not supposed to have been mature enough at that time.

"The leading theory is that an ocean of dark matter filled the early universe after the Big Bang," astrophysicist Ivo Labbe of Swinburne University of Technology — an author on the paper — previously told Reuters .

Dark matter is the elusive, invisible stuff that makes up more than 80% of the universe. Scientists still don't understand what it is and haven't seen it, but they can pick up its shadow by looking at how it distorts light around the universe.

"This dark matter — we don't know what it actually is —started out really smooth, with only the tiniest of ripples. These ripples grew over time due to gravity and eventually, the dark matter started to collect in concentrated clumps, dragging hydrogen gas along for the ride," Labbe said.

The galaxy found by the James Webb telescope shouldn't be able to exist under this model.

Scientists previously expected these small ripples would only create small, disordered, clumpy galaxies in the universe's early days. Only after about one billion to two billion years should these early protogalaxies start clumping together, forming more complex, ordered entities, per Space.com.

This isn't the only galaxy that has been spotted challenging this model. Scientists previously found a 11.7 billion year old barrel galaxy , billions of years before they thought it was possible.

"Having these extremely massive galaxies so early in the universe is posing significant challenges to our standard model of cosmology," said study coauthor Claudia Lagos, an associate professor of astronomy from the University of Western Australia.

The other puzzling finding is that this galaxy didn't seem to continue to evolve. Instead, it became quiescent.

"This pushes the boundaries of our current understanding of how galaxies form and evolve," Themiya Nanayakkara, study author and astronomer at the Swinburne University of Technology, said in the statement.

"The key question now is how they form so fast, very early in the Universe, and what mysterious mechanisms lead to stopping them from forming stars abruptly when the rest of the Universe is doing so," said Nanayakkara.

Glazebrook, however, cautions that it's too early to throw out the current model altogether. Although the galaxy is interesting, more evidence is needed to confirm their generalizable observations.

"This result sets a new record for this phenomenon. Although it is very striking, it is only one object. But we hope to find more; and if we do this will really upset our ideas of galaxy formation," he said in a statement.

The team published its findings on February 14 in the peer-reviewed journal Nature .

Recent sex abuse lawsuits against music impresario Sean “Diddy” Combs have damaged his reputation and career. But a new suit from music producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones makes new, explosive claims about Combs’ alleged assaults and misconduct in granular detail, naming several prominent artists and music executives as well.

Jones, who worked closely with Combs on his recent release “The Love Album: Off the Grid,” sued him in federal court in New York on Monday, alleging Combs sexually and physically abused him, engaged in sex trafficking and ran his inner circle as a “RICO enterprise” that functioned like a criminal organization. Jones’ suit contains what he says are photos, videos and screenshots corroborating his allegations.

Combs denied the previous claims against him, including those from a former partner, R&B singer Cassie , whose November suit kicked off a wave of complaints against Combs under New York’s Adult Survivors Act.

Combs’ attorney Shawn Holley said in a statement that “Lil Rod is nothing more than a liar who filed a $30 million lawsuit shamelessly looking for an undeserved payday. His reckless name-dropping about events that are pure fiction and simply did not happen is nothing more than a transparent attempt to garner headlines. We have overwhelming, indisputable proof that his claims are complete lies. Our attempts to share this proof with Mr. Jones’ attorney, Tyrone Blackburn, have been ignored, as Mr. Blackburn refuses to return our calls. We will address these outlandish allegations in court and take all appropriate action against those who make them.”

Diddy’s ‘Love’ producer Lil Rod accuses him and associates of sexual assault, illicit behavior

Rodney ‘Lil Rod’ Jones has filed a bombshell lawsuit against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs accusing the media mogul of sexually harassing and threatening him.

Feb. 27, 2024

Jones’ suit is a sprawling document that names well-known music executives, celebrities and bit players in Combs’ circle. While some famous names are redacted (though alluded to with blind-item-style clues), here is a guide to the many names that appear in the suit.

Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones

A Chicago-born producer who recorded with gospel-inspired acts like the Clark Sisters and Georgia Mass Choir. Jones produced nine songs on Diddy’s “Love Album” between September 2022 and November 2023.

Sean “Diddy” Combs

The producer, Bad Boy Entertainment founder, media executive and celebrity spokesman had a monumental hip-hop career dating back to the early 1990s. He helped launched the career of the Notorious B.I.G., scored platinum records of his own and oversaw businesses that made him one of music’s richest men. The claims from last year’s lawsuits made him toxic in the industry, however, and Jones’ new claims likely will add to that sentiment.

Among the many allegations in the suit, Jones said Combs sexually saluted and harassed him while they worked at Combs’ homes in Los Angeles, New York, Florida and on a yacht in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He claims Combs forced him to procure sex workers and participate in group sex with him, and that Combs drugged him in February of last year. He also said Combs was involved in a shooting at a Hollywood recording studio in 2022.

In the wake of multiple lawsuits filed against him, former members of Combs’ inner circle told The Times that his alleged misconduct against women goes back decades.

Dec. 13, 2023

Justin Dior Combs

Diddy’s adult son who, Jones claims, also was present at the 2022 shooting at Chalice Recording Studios. Jones alleges Justin solicited sex workers for the crew around Diddy and participated in the “freak-off” group sex events. A rep for Justin Combs said in a statement, “Justin Combs categorically denies these absurd allegations. They are all lies! This is a a clear example of a desperate person taking desperate measures in hopes of a pay day. There will be legal consequences for ALL defamatory statements made about the Combs family.”

Kristina Khorram

Diddy’s chief of staff who, Jones alleges in his lawsuit, procured sex workers for Combs and would “instruct her staff to lace Champagne, DeLeon [tequila], and Ciroc liquor bottles with ecstasy and other [illicit] drugs,” and “required all employees from the butler, the chef to the housekeepers, to walk around with a pouch or fanny pack filled with cocaine, GHB, ecstasy” and other drugs. Khorram did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Ethiopia Habtemariam

The former CEO of Motown Records, which partnered with Combs on his Love Records imprint. Jones claims Habtemariam visited Combs’ homes during writing sessions and social gatherings, and that she “had a duty and obligation to ensure that sex workers and underaged girls were not present, and that Mr. Combs was not spiking the alcohol with date rape drugs.” A rep for Universal Music Group did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Lucian Grainge

The CEO of Universal Music Group, the world’s largest record label conglomerate and Motown’s parent company. Jones claims Grainge also “attended several Love Album listening parties at Mr. Combs’ home in Los Angeles, California,” where some of the alleged misconduct took place. A rep for Universal Music Group did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A music producer and longtime Bad Boy Entertainment affiliate who worked on Diddy’s debut album in 1997. Stevie J also worked on “The Love Album” with Jones, who claimed that Combs “used access to Stevie J, and his knowledge of Mr. Jones admiration of Stevie J to groom and entice Mr. Jones.” Stevie J told TMZ in an interview, “These allegations are false and my lawyer will be handling this going forward.”

The City Girls rapper who, Jones alleges in the suit, was part of a group that “were paid a monthly fee to work as Mr. Combs’ sex workers and received payment via wire transfer.” Jones also alleges that Yung Miami’s female cousin, unnamed in the suit, sexually assaulted him at a party in 2022. Representatives for Yung Miami did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Cuba Gooding Jr.

The actor who, Jones claims, made sexual advances toward him on Diddy’s yacht after Diddy’s “grooming him to pass him off to his friends.” Gooding ‘s manager did not respond to a request for comment.

A friend of Justin Combs’ who was Jones says was shot at Chalice Studios in 2022. Jones claims members of Diddy’s crew were instructed to lie about the location of the shooting.

Faheem Muhammad

Diddy’s head of security, who, Jones claims, “had the power to make people and problems disappear” and served as an intermediary between the LAPD and Diddy after the Chalice shooting. He did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Robin Greenhill

Diddy’s accountant, who, Jones claims, oversaw payments to sex workers. Greenhill, of Tri Star Sports & Entertainment, is best known for working with Britney Spears’ father to oversee the singer’s conservatorship; Britney Spears accused Greenhill of intrusive surveillance. A rep for Tri Star declined comment.

DeForrest Taylor

Brendan Paul

Jones claims in the suit that Paul “works as Mr. Combs’ mule. He acquires, and distributes, Mr. Combs’ drugs and guns.” He could not be located for comment.

Frankie Santella

Jones alleges that Santella “carries the money and pays for the Guns and Drugs” alongside Paul. He could not be located for comment.

Jones claims Baun helped procure sex workers for “freak-offs” at Diddy’s homes. He could not be located for comment.

Diddy’s IT director, who, Jones claims, oversees hidden cameras placed throughout Diddy’s homes and is “the gatekeeper to all of [Mr. Combs] recordings” of events in his house. He could not be located for comment.

galaxy-of-happiness-is-the-first-trimaran-superyacht-from-latitude-yachts

Galaxy of Happiness: The 53m trimaran taking yachting to another world

It is the kind of weather that would strand most pleasure yachts in port. Force 5 wind, white-capped seas and gloomy skies — a proper winter storm that makes the summer splendour of the Côte d’Azur seem a distant memory. Not an ideal day for a sea trial then — except, perhaps, for testing 53.3 metre Galaxy of Happiness , a futuristic trimaran specifically designed for stability in rough seas.

Gleaming in silver, Galaxy of Happiness sits alone in Monaco harbour looking like a spaceship ready for take-off. While her profile is inarguably eye-catching, the aim of this project is function over fashion. Efficiency, stability and speed are the ultimate goals.

She comes from the drawing board of Jean-Jacques Coste, of Coste Design & Partners , the multihull specialist known for its sailing catamarans such as 29 metre Cartouche . Galaxy of Happiness sits is its first foray into powered multihulls, but it is one that has been a long time coming.

Coste has been working on powered trimaran concepts for more than a decade, fully formed with naval architecture work-ups and tank testing. “We were simply waiting for the right owner to come along,” says Coste. “I’m a sail guy but that market is now only five per cent. And when you’re thinking about power and a bigger yacht, a trimaran makes more sense than a catamaran.”

The right owner did emerge at last, a Russian client in his 40s. “Creator” might be a more appropriate term as this client breathed life into both Galaxy of Happiness and her sistership, Galaxy , keeping the latter for himself in Greece and gifting Galaxy of Happiness to a friend.

The twin yachts were built alongside one another at Latitude Yachts in Latvia and delivered last summer. They mark the first full superyacht projects for this young shipyard that previously concentrated on smaller boats, superyacht refits and some subcontracting work for northern European yards.

Latitude specialises in composite but it has also set up facilities where it can build in aluminium. The yard’s youth was a virtue, it turned out. Freed from the shackles of heritage, Latitude wasn’t afraid to take on the wild and new.

Only a handful of yachts have been launched in Latvia over the years, so it was an interesting choice. But the owner had worked with the yard already, when Latitude built a luxury riverboat for him years before.

“It’s still Europe,” says Maxim Lyashenko, Latitude’s business development manager, “it’s not an exotic country. We work with a top French designer, top suppliers. Our workers are northern European, very hard workers who take pride in their work and love what they do.” The big difference, he confirms, is that the man-hour rates are very low, allowing Latitude to offer a competitive price.

Galaxy and Galaxy of Happiness don’t share a mould as they were built in unison in female moulds out of composites, carbon fibre, fibreglass, epoxy resin and polyurethane foam materials using Gurit’s Sprint infusion process. The entire boat is also post cured, for a light and strong structure.

“The owner was attracted to the unconventional but he understood the other benefits of trimarans as well,” says Coste. “Style is subjective but naval architecture and efficiency is a fact.”

Efficiency is one of the biggest benefits of a trimaran configuration, Coste says, as they require 40 to 50 per cent less energy than a monohull of the same length. There is less drag than a monohull, and Galaxy of Happiness is also hybrid-powered, outfitted with electric engines that can be driven by the generators or run through a battery pack to deliver a silent mode at a speed of six to eight knots for several hours.

This meets the owner’s brief for quiet running while fishing off his yacht, and it helps when manoeuvring in harbours. Galaxy of Happiness also benefits from a “wing tunnel effect” between the main hull and each outrigger — their positioning perfectly calculated to create several tonnes of lift at full speed, further reducing drag.

The naval architecture is arguably more complicated than a monohull as the interaction between the three hulls must be taken into account. The outriggers must be of precise length and in exact positions, something that Coste reviewed at length in air flow tests and with computational fluid dynamics.

Tank testing showed just how stable this hull form is, one of the benefits of a beamy trimaran. They are also fast, as proved by the speed records set by sailing trimarans. Galaxy of Happiness tops out at 30 knots, powered by her twin 2,600hp MTU diesel engines, which are supplemented with 120kW electric engines, coupled to retractable props in the outriggers.

These shafts and props fold in at high speeds, reducing drag (while the main engines in the main hull drive the boat). Not many yachts can go 30 knots and have a transatlantic range as well. “Even the navy is looking at these types of boats because they can go fast in rough seas and have low fuel consumption with a good range [2,300 nautical miles] at cruising speed,” says Coste.

The benefits of a trimaran are obvious, but what do you give up? Space, for one thing. The narrow hull form means less room for cabins. Galaxy of Happiness has the equivalent volume of a 35 metre motor yacht, but then again she’s also the price of a 35 metre.

But you can’t judge a trimaran by monohull standards. Instead of a huge upper deck, the main aft deck is the entertainment hub, with plentiful sofas, sunpads and a long dining table topped in tiger eye stone that seats 12. The petite sundeck, meanwhile, still has the expected superyacht spa pool and bar.

The saloon is surprisingly spacious, although styled simply by this owner, who eschewed Coste’s recommendation to add a bar in the corner. He just wanted a sofa, games table and big dining table, so this is what is found in the lofty room that is well lit by an opening skylight above. The windows and skylight are LCD glass, which is dimmable.

Two separate superyacht staircases lead to the cabins, which are split with the master and a guest cabin aft and another guest cabin amidships. One staircase is framed by a masterful piece of architecture in carbon fibre. The entire interior is warmed by the owner’s choice of red-tinted mahogany floors and cherry joinery, also stained in a red varnish.

The bold choice gives a colourful contrast to the cool exterior. Coste’s company did the GA and even designed the furniture, while the interior décor was created in-house by the yard.

The portholes in the cabins all open, so a fresh breeze can flow through the interior. You can open the doors and skylight to get a current of wind that replaces the air conditioning, even in summer. Coste says he carried this over from the sailing catamaran world.

Originally intended for private use, the layout can accommodate a big family and has guest cabins with three beds apiece. You could picture the rooms reimagined with a larger wardrobe or sitting area instead of one of the beds if this wasn’t to the taste of a potential new owner. The owner who received Galaxy of Happiness as a gift found in the end that he wanted even more berths and is on the hunt for a larger yacht.

Although catching the eye isn’t the aim, there is no denying that Coste and Latitude are trying to attract a new type of client, one who is younger and more concerned about the environment, adventure and speed than yachting traditions — or perhaps who has had little experience in yachting at all. Coste thinks the trimaran, with its blend of unusual styling and efficient, speedy performance, could be just the ticket.

Despite the modern lines, Coste says his inspiration for the twin trimarans comes from some of the oldest craft in the world. “It’s not that we’re actually doing something new — just look at Polynesian pirogues. Multihulls are one of the earliest configurations because they are efficient and stable,” says Coste. “It’s the same as those wooden craft: long, narrow hull and two outriggers.”

Perhaps the multihull has been forgotten and it’s time for a revival or, in Coste’s opinion, a yacht design revolution . He points to the bareboat charter market in the Caribbean, where sailing cats have overtaken the fleet thanks to their stability and comfort on board.

In 20 years’ time, Coste suggests, trimarans could take over the superyacht fleet, or at least put a dent in it, as more owners seek the combined benefits of fuel savings and speed. Multihull superyachts offer that rare combination of being eco-conscious while reaching their adventurous destinations more quickly.

“There is a place in the market for people looking for something that is both fast and efficient,” says David Legrand, of Fraser. “Perhaps it could appeal to the Mangusta owner, offering enough speed but not be prohibited by range.” He admits the multihull market is still a niche one, but for the younger millionaires who enjoy self-sufficiency it’s an appealing proposition.

It’s hard to ignore the elephant in the room — Galaxy of Happiness is reminiscent of Adastra , which similarly turned heads with her launch in 2012. Of course, there are plenty of white, multi-tiered yachts but with Galaxy of Happiness ’s space-craft exterior the resemblance is more striking.

According to Coste, this was never the intention. The creator/owner of the Galaxy vessels explored several styles before settling on this design, but in the end this met the brief of the owner more than Coste’s original ideas did. The owner specifically wanted a flowing, winged superstructure, without a flat windscreen and no reverse bow.

Staying under 300GT was also part of the aim, a challenge in a 53 metre. But even so, Coste is quick to point out the differences. “ Adastra is much more soft and curvy, we are more straight,” he says. “And we are much faster than Adastra ,” a fact that Coste attributes to the wing tunnel lift advantage.

It certainly proves true. Galaxy of Happiness is sure-footed in the choppy seas. Up on the flybridge there is some wetness, to be expected on a rough day, but noticeably far less rolling than a monohull. Inside the saloon, it is whisper quiet and so calm that you can’t tell we’ve hit a top speed of 29.5 knots.

It’s a boat that you feel comfortable going to sea in, and in conditions that would keep most monohulls in port. And best of all, you wouldn’t have to stodgily roll through the waves at an economical speed but could take off near top speed and get to safe harbour faster and in more comfort, although maybe not slip into every port.

This is just a sample of the possibilities of the trimaran platform. Coste shares the renderings for a number of other concepts that use other superstructures on the same hull form employed in the Galaxy twins. It is remarkable how different from Galaxy of Happiness they are and they display how a semi-custom platform could easily be born, offering a variety of exterior profiles and layouts.

One version has two decks with Portuguese bridge style windows reminiscent of a sailing catamaran wrapping all the way around — more of a floating loft than a spaceship. An 88 metre and 100 metre are also in development. A bold owner, other multihull projects ready and waiting and a yard willing to do things differently — for Coste, good things come in threes it seems.

Los Angeles Galaxy

After struggling last season, the galaxy saw signs of positives on the defensive end in its season-opening draw.

the galaxy yacht

When you allowed 67 goals last season, which averages out to nearly two per game, any time you keep an opponent below that is a positive.

That’s a good way to describe the Galaxy heading into their second game of the season.

The Galaxy held Inter Miami CF off the scoreboard until Lionel Messi scored in the second minute of stoppage time, when the Galaxy was down to 10 men after Mark Delgado’s second yellow card.

“Defensively, I felt like we were really compact,” Galaxy coach Greg Vanney said. “When we were high, we were together, when we were low, we were together … we were really spread apart and I think that’s going to be really important for this team, for the whole season.”

The Galaxy (0-0-1, 1 point) will face the San Jose Earthquakes (0-1) on Saturday in the 99th edition of the Cali Clasico (7:30 p.m., Apple TV+)

A lot of questions coming in were focused on the center back pairing of 35-year-old Maya Yoshida and 36-year-old Martin Caceres. The duo brings more than their share of experience.

“For me the center back position, you only really have to be athletic when you make bad decisions or you don’t read situations, or when things break down around you and you need to make covering plays,” Vanney said. “When you have nearly 80 years of experience, you don’t get many bad decisions from these guys.

“You get a lot of good decisions, recognition of scenarios, seeing things happen before they happen so they’re able to cut them off. If the group in front of them is doing a good job of keeping us connected, then they don’t get exposed in big spaces. So, that’s why I say our connections is really important to help those guys out. Both of them is probably a little more athletic than they get credit for at their age, but also we don’t want to get them in position where they’re chasing guys all over the field, so we have to remain compact.”

That helped against Inter Miami, but San Jose expects to pose a different challenge with their movement at the forward position.

Caceres missed the majority of last season with an avulsion fracture in his left knee. His return didn’t come as a surprise to Vanney.

“First of all, he’s a machine,” Vanney said. “He just puts in the work every single day, he’s in the weight room every single day, he takes care of himself. I wish at 36 I looked like he does. He’s really professional about those things and besides from that, he’s a warrior. You have to drag him off the field with a crane because he just wants to play and compete and he wants to play.”

Delgado eligible Saturday

Delgado’s reaction to his second yellow card late in Sunday’s game against Inter Miami was one of shock. Soon after, everyone else felt the same as video replays showed Delgado had missed the tackle on Sergio Busquets.

The Galaxy appealed the decision and the Independent Review Panel, which consists of a representative from the U.S. Soccer Federation, Canadian Soccer Association and one independent representative nominated by the Professional Referee Organization, ruled to rescind Delgado’s second yellow card, allowing him to play Saturday.

“Between A), looking at the footage, especially from different angles you see that he doesn’t get him; B), I think there’s a little bit of the collective community like this isn’t (a foul); and C, when Busquets comes out and says he really doesn’t get me, it shouldn’t be a yellow card,” Vanney said Thursday. “I don’t know how much all of that gets calculated into it (the decision), but I think there was enough evidence there to overturn it.”

“I think it’s best of a bad situation. We lost two points because of it, but we shouldn’t lose the two points and the player on a situation that is that questionable.”
