Sausalito Yacht Club
100 Humboldt Ave, Sausalito, CA 94965 Phone 415-332-7400
Neighborhood: Downtown Sausalito & Ferry Pier . Website is here . Small off-street parking lot adjacent to Sausalito City lot. Members only.
The Sausalito Yacht Club was founded in 1942 by a group of teenagers (the oldest was only 16) who had signed on to care for the boats of many Bay Area residents after they entered military service with the US entry into World War II. Almost 70 years later the club has achieved greater size and stature, but continues its commitment to sponsoring boat races, youth sailing and community support.
Membership is open to people who have boats in Sausalito or live in the area and who have an interest in boating.
The clubhouse is located adjacent to the Sausalito Ferry pier , between the Ferry and the Spinnaker Restaurant .
We have been guests of Members at SYC events. Their bar and dining room serve excellent food and have great views, especially out on the patio.

Beautiful views, bartender was attentive, and very nice. I highly recommend this place.
You want a dive with an amazing view?!? Go here. Go with no expectation and of anything other than dive, and you will be thrilled. If you want anything other than a very limited menu of bar food, go somewhere else first. But all s well; drinks are cheap for this area; view is amazing.
Old school - no frills bar with rustic ambiance and great views. Stayed at Cavallo Point and wandered down for a Guinness complete with a shamrock on top. Fun place - non-pretentious crowd.
Amazing view, food, people, and live music. Can't believe I only just found out about this little gem!
The service was super friendly and accommodating to our large group. We were looking for food because the wait at the Bay Area Discovery Museum was about 40 minutes. We discovered a laid back place with amazing views! Will definitely go back!
The location and the coolness of this second-floor bar are great...but the selection of distilled spirits and the bar tending are underwhelming. It's a shame because with some investment in the actual bar could elevate the experience of imbibing here.
Real estate investors are foaming at the mouth to get their grubby hands on this place with the killer view but it's never going to happen ... Thankfully, it's all for us regular folk to enjoy. Tips: They have a full bar and a small, casual menu (burgers & quesadillas). They take credit cards but cash tips only (and bring your cash because they're awesome and deserve it). Wishes: I wish there was a great juke box, better bands, and that it was open more often.

Interesting venue. Great view, cheap drinks. Pizza was the only thing on the menu. I think it's a popular local bar but as someone visiting a little out of place.
Secret and wonderful. Nothing to see here; move along - unless you know the way. Feels Like a deep woods roadside bar in the Midwest or a honky tonk joint in TX -but on the water in NoCal with salty sailors

Ahoy, adventurous souls! Welcome to the shimmering waters of Sausalito, California. This picturesque seaside community – nestled on the northern end of the iconic Golden Gate, after which the bridge is named – is not just an artist’s haven or a foodie’s paradise; it’s a sailor’s dream.
Sausalito, with its sweeping vistas of San Francisco and the Pacific, offers more than just stunning views – it promises an fun sailing experience, unparalleled by few other locations in the world.
Whether you’re piloting your own vessel, taking a sailing tour, hiring a chartered yacht, or up for an adventure in renting a boat, sailing in Sausalito promises to be an incredible way to experience my favorite coastal town. In this guide, you’ll find everything you need to know to go sailing in Sausalito – on your own, in a group, or however you choose.
This post covers the essentials you need to get to Sausalito by boat and/or start your sailing adventure here; you can use the rest of this site to plan your time in Sausalito once you step back on land. Table of Contents
Sausalito Sailing Tours
It’s no surprise that most travelers have sailing in mind when they come to Sausalito. I mean, there’s a lot of water around the town. You’ll be spoilt with choice when it comes companies that offer tours for sailing in Sausalito. Just so you don’t get overwhelmed, I’ve listed the best sailing businesses below so you can browse their options and enjoy a day out in the water!
Schooner Freda B Public Sailings
Schooner Freda B Public Sailings offers some of the most popular Sausalito sailing tours. They have tons of tour options, but popped love the most that they all have this old-school wood boat bay tours aura. If you go to their website, you’ll notice they offer private charters, sunset sails, wedding celebrations, birthday parties, and more, and also public sails.
Captain Kirk’s Sausalito Sailing
If you don’t enjoy mingling with strangers, Captain Kirk’s Sausalito Sailing offers only private charters. They host their sailing adventures on three yachts: the Bay Wolf , the Mahalo , and the Osprey . There’s no shortage of trips to choose from: sunset sailings, Angel Island Barbecue, sailing lessons; you can even book an Ash Scattering Memorial.
(If you don’t get the joke behind the name of this company, Starfleet Headquarters is actually located in Sausalito – so it’s got an interesting connection to science fiction!)
SF Bay Adventures
SF Bay Adventures has a huge fleet, but they alaos also own and host some of their most popular trips for sailing in Sausalito aboard a Schooner Freda B – which is gorgeous, by the way. They offer public sails, but their strong point are private charters. You can choose from yacht charters on SF Bay to private events packages.
Fine Day for Sailing
A Fine Day for Sailing is a lesser known sailing outfit. Heather Richard is the captain of the yacht Carodon . She offers her boat for private charter to those who intent on spending one of our days out sailing the bay. Her service portfolio includes from nautical photo shoots and events to naturalist-led excursions on the water.
Sausalito Boats for Rent
If you prefer something more personal, you can always turn to locals who open their boats and yachts to travelers. There are two Sausalito boat rentals you can explore online.
Boatsetter
Boatsetters is a boat rental community that’s been active since 2012. The platform allows travelers to connect with boat owners, and licensed captains. You’ll find different kinds of experiences, from short sails around the bay or a day-long fishing excursion.
As of publishing in mid-2023, there are 10 boats available for rent in Sausalito on Boatsetter .
GetMyBoat is very cool online platform that offers both captained experiences and drive-it-yourself rentals; it’s similar to Boatsetter. They also have 9 listings of boats for rent in Sausalito – it looks like many of the same boats are available on both platforms.
Sailing Your Own Boat in Sausalito
If you have your own boat and want to come visit Sausalito, there are other considerations too. Below are some tips to help you make the most of your time in this lovely community.
Sailing in Richardson Bay
Richardson Bay is a beautiful spot to go sailing – but it can be a bit treacherous; there is a problem with anchor-out boats that obstruct the main channels.
I strongly recommend consulting sailing charts to get an overall sense of the area, plus using your radar/AIS and your eyes to look for both anchored boats and unpowered craft (like kayaks , of which there are many on a weekend). I also advise against sailing into Richardson Bay at night since not all of the boats are properly lit to help you avoid collisions.
Day/Overnight Moorage in Sausalito
Several of Sausalito’s marinas offer daily/overnight moorage. You should definitely call each marina before you sail into town, just to confirm the details and availability. Here are ones you can start with:
- Schoonmaker Point Marina has daily moorage from $2-$4 per foot, depending on length
- Clipper Yacht Harbor also offers daily moorage from $2-$3 per foot
Sausalito Yacht Club , Sausalito Cruising Club , and Marina Plaza Harbor may all also offer daily moorage, but I don’t know the details – definitely call to inquire. (Some may require membership too, just FYI.)
Long-Term Moorage in Sausalito
If you’re looking for monthly or longer moorage, there are options for that too.
- Schoonmaker Point Marina also has monthly moorage from $21.80 per foot
- Blue Water Yacht Harbor offers monthly moorage from $12.25 per foot
- Clipper Yacht Harbor also offers monthly moorage from $13-$28 per foot
- Richardson Bay Marina has monthly moorage rates starting from $14.50 per foot
Pelican Harbour , Bridgeway Marina, Sausalito Cruising Club, and Marina Plaza Harbor also may offer monthly moorage; I don’t have details for these ones either, so I’d start with the four listed above and choose one of them if possible.
As for live-aboard slips (like the one we had in Bridgeway Marina), I’m sorry to burst your bubble but those aren’t really available in Sausalito. Most marinas that have live-aboard slips have a multi-year waiting list.

Valerie fell in love with Sausalito after her very first visit; she and her husband then moved there in 2019. It's one of her favorite places in the Bay Area and she's excited to show you the best parts of her city.

Editorials | Editorial: Sausalito should prioritize building maintenance proposal
Sausalito is getting ready to do some housekeeping.
The city is planning to conduct a full review of the condition and needs of the 110 properties – large, small and some underwater – that it owns. Those properties range from municipal parking lots to the city-owned firehouses.
In addition, the bayfront city owns numerous piers and docks, some leased for private businesses and some part of parks.
When it comes to buildings, delayed repairs often turn into bigger, more expensive jobs.
Having a plan in place to keep these buildings, the public’s assets, in good repair is both wise and responsible.
The analysis, which could cost $115,000, is supposed to detail both short- and long-term maintenance needs.
Among the properties that are leased by the city are the Spinnaker restaurant and the Sausalito Yacht Club, both bayfront landmarks supported by pile foundations over the bay. They are subject to tidal action, loss of shoreline and other possible ramifications of climate change.
Mayor Ian Sobieski underscored the need for the review, noting that the city properties have “a lot of deferred infrastructure maintenance.”
City Manager Chris Zapata’s assessment is that Sausalito “has aging buildings that have been neglected.”
In recent years, the city has conducted similar assessments of its streets and sewers.
The proposal is the city’s recent look at the energy systems of its buildings and will be factored into the assessment.
Staying on top of keeping properties in safe and sound condition means budgeting money for keeping them in good repair rather than having to spend a lot more to fix crises.
Just ask Novato, where the city-owned Community House, the large one-time hub in the heart of the city, has been shuttered for nearly 20 years after the city and fire district inspectors deemed the century-old building unsafe.
Other cities and public agencies have faced similar dilemmas. In some cases, they have had to go to local taxpayers to pass capital bonds to renovate and repair their buildings.
The details that come from the review may be far beyond Sausalito’s budget constraints, but that knowledge is important for setting prudent priorities and making progress toward staying on top of repairs rather than being dictated by safety concerns or bringing them to up-to-date building codes.
When it comes to docks and piers, the analysis would look into the effects of climate change and sea level rise. City officials are already looking into getting grants to address needed repairs.
The council deserves credit for planning to move forward with a comprehensive assessment. It is City Hall living up to its responsibility as the landlord and steward of these public assets.
This prudent assessment may find out things it doesn’t want to hear, but there is a time-tested likelihood that the cost of continued benign neglect may be worse.

Our Mission
The purpose of the Sausalito Yacht Club is to actively promote the sport of boating, sail training, develop and sponsor yachting and yacht racing events; educate members about marine oriented skills; to be actively involved in our community with a focus on activities that enhance our standing in the community; and to provide and manage a convivial bar and galley operation for the benefit of the membership.
The Sausalito Yacht Club was founded on the principles of belonging. Our membership always has been and will continue to be inclusive and diverse and we welcome all boating enthusiasts. All applicants are considered for membership without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, or age.
Bill Whitaker, John Hooper (founder), Henry Mettier, Henry Easom, Rob Hobart, Jim Enzensperger (founder) in late 1940s
The founders conceived and established the new club on New Year’s Eve of 1942. The time was right. World War II had called many of the older, local boat owners to Europe or the Pacific. Before heading off to war, they trusted their boats to the care of the club’s young founders, the oldest just three months short of his seventeenth birthday. The club had several names in the first few days (including the tongue in cheek Ritz Sailing and Racquet Club) until Sausalito Yacht Club became the obvious choice. A mood of teenage rebellion was reflected in a provision of the first bylaws: no one could join the club who was older than the oldest founding member. Later, the maximum age limit was raised, although it was not abandoned until 1953.
Originally the club meetings were held in members’ homes, but they soon adopted the Officer’s saloon of the steam schooner, Santa Barbara. Club meetings had to be scheduled at low tide due to the fact that the Santa Barbara was beached in mud at the south end of the Sausalito Yacht Harbor. Later on the members rented the former clubhouse of the San Francisco Yacht Club on the Sausalito waterfront (future home of the Trident, then the Horizons restaurants).
After the end of World War II, the club moved to a wood frame building at the south end of the yacht harbor. A small boat hoist and dry boat storage helped the club to grow and host regattas for the Small Boat Racing Association (SBRA).
