Tahiti and Tuamotus: Moorea

While author James Michener famously called Bora Bora the most beautiful island in the world, world traveler and guidebook author, Arthur Frommer, considers Moorea the most beautiful. While Bora Bora’s blue lagoon encircling its volcanic peaks is a stunner, the volcanic beauty of Moorea with its lush green interiors, pineapple fields, jagged mountain peaks and scenic overlooks make it worthy of accolades as well.

Mouaputa is also known as “Bali Hai,” or the “Shark’s Tooth, since it a small hole can be seen going through the very top of the mountain.

Moorea was the last port of call on our 10-day Windstar Cruises’ Tahiti and Tuamotus cruise before we would return to Papeete, Tahiti, the starting point of our amazing journey through the South Pacific.

Tiare flowers (Tahitian gardenia) are the emblem of French Polynesia.. If you place the bud behind your left ear, you’re taken, behind the right means you are available.

While the surrounding waters are perfect for scuba diving, snorkeling and swimming, we decided to explore Moorea by land via a 4×4 half day safari tour I booked independently. I  toured Moorea seven years earlier in a similar way when I was with other travel writers on a press trip and this time I wanted to share the beauty of the island with my husband.

If you choose to tour only one island by land, this is the one.

Belvedere Lookout is the highest overlook point accessible to visitors (unless you are into strenuous hikes up one of the peaks).

One road circles the island, with interior roads leading up to Belvedere Lookout, the island’s highest point at 720 feet. From the summit, we had amazing views of surrounding peaks and looked down to Opunohu and Cook’s Bays where we saw our Windstar ship in the distance.

Another tour group arrived while we were at Belvedere Lookout.

We stopped at the Manutea Juice Factory for a free tasting of some of the 18 juices and beverages it produces, including Tahiti Punch and spirits made with vanilla, coconut and pineapple. In business since 1981, it is open Monday through Saturday, 8-4, and also stocks a selection of gift items and souvenirs.

Tasting hostess at Manutea displays the liqueur made from pineapples.

Moorea is known as the pineapple center of French Polynesia, producing more than 2,600 tons of pineapple each year. We stopped at a pineapple field to see them in various stages of growth.

One of Moorea's many pineapple fields.

Our guide struck a pose for us in the pineapple field.

Next we moved on to the Opunohu Agricultural college (called the Lycée Argricole in French; it’s French Polynesia’s only agricultural school) where we could sample the many fruit jams produced here and grab a cold beverage. Students sometimes give free guided tours of the college’s vanilla and coffee tree plantations and tropical flower gardens but it was closed when we were there.

Lady at the agricultural college where we tasted fruit jams.

I was reminded of my earlier visit in 2010 when I purchased a jar of lime jam that I packed to take home. Unfortunately, it was taken away from me when I went through Security at the airport since it was considered a “liquid!” At the time, I had no idea jellies and jams are considered liquids and must be put in checked luggage. My checked luggage couldn’t be retrieved so I watched it be thrown into the trash bin. I learned my lesson about what is and is not allowed to be in carry-on luggage!

Our next stop was at the site of sacred open air temples called marae. The one we visited is called Tetiiroa, often referred to as the Belvedere marae and is at the edge of a forested area in the Oponohu valley. Our guide explained how the temples were used in ancient times, with rituals involving making offerings to the gods, sometimes including human sacrifices.

We also visited marae on our “Sacred Sites and Cultural Walk” excursion on Huahine, which I covered in a previous post . They have a fascinating history for those interested in learning more… ( Taputapuatea, one of the largest marae in French Polynesia is on Raiatea, which was not a stop on our cruise but is included on some Windstar Tahiti itineraries.)

Moorea’s mountains, despite their relatively low altitude, are among the most rugged in the world.

As our half day tour ended, our guide dropped us off at Snack Mahana for lunch, which had been highly recommended as a popular spot with locals and visitors alike. We were informed credit cards are not accepted, so we made sure we had enough U.S. dollars with us (no need to have local currency).

We ordered grilled tuna steak with rice, a glass of French rosé and ended with coconut ice cream. All of it was delicious! I took photos of the food at a neighboring table — poisson cru and tuna sashimi salad — which made me wish we had time to sample more of its dishes. If you visit Moorea, don’t miss the opportunity to dine here! (See the Slideshow below )

After lunch, our guide returned for us and then dropped us off in town where we were able to browse a few shops and check out other restaurants. We talked with a few cruise ship passengers who were entering a great-looking waterfront restaurant, MBC Yacht Club – Moorea Beach Cafe  that had interesting sounding pizzas with grilled octopus and shrimp. We bought t-shirts and checked out a pearl shop before walking back to the port, where I purchased a few items from local jewelry vendors who had set up tables to sell their wares before returning to our ship.

MAN!!! I want to go here! I’ve always had an interest in Tahiti, but your post has given me visions that are now permanently implanted in my brain. I shall have to talk to my travel agent!

I’m enjoying reliving my trip in these posts, Doreen, but it’s also making me want to go back. I’ll go with you! 🙂

Moorea hadn’t been on my radar, much less my bucket list. But now it is! I grew up listening to the sound track to South Pacific, so the haunting melody with lyrics extolling Bali Hai has been with me many years now. Thanks for your lovely photos, such a treat!

The South Pacific soundtrack comes to life when you visit French Polynesia, Jean! I hope you do get to visit Moorea. I’m glad, too, that you enjoyed the images I captured while there.

I love islands with diverse landscapes, and Moorea sounds like that with its volcanic peaks and green interiors. While you did the land journey, I would have chosen scuba diving and swimming. But would have wanted another day to explore the interior.

I had Australian honey that was packed in my checked suitcase taken away from me at the airport in Fiji.

We have been to the South Pacific islands but not to Tahiti. When we go back, Moorea will be a top choice!

Hi Wendy, thanks for your comment! Unfortunately, we didn’t have an extra day to do both land and sea excursions on the cruise so, knowing how beautiful Moorea is, I wanted to see it again with my husband by land. We’d already had several wonderful scuba diving excursions on Fakarava, Rangiroa and Bora Bora, so it was a good choice for us!

I adore islands, and Moorea has been on my bucket list for a while. I so enjoyed this preview with you.

If you are an island-lover, you would love this 10-day cruise with Windstar! Moorea is definitely one of the most beautiful but they all have their treasures both above and below the sea!

A juice tasting! Now that’s something that makes sense but I’ve never done one. Sounds perfect on a tropical island. I’ve really enjoyed tagging along on your trip but now have some serious wanderlust to start planning a trip!

So glad you’ve enjoyed the posts, Lori! One more to go and then I’ll be ready to plan another trip to the South Pacific. Hope you get to go.

I had very little knowledge of Moorea and have never traveled the South Pacific. Your photos and story are so enticing. One of these days…! Would the Windstar Cruise be a good way to start, or focus on one island?

Yes, I think a Windstar cruise would be an excellent way to see several of the islands. If you don’t want to do the 10-day itinerary, the 7-day cruise would give you a great introduction to the Society Islands. You could then do a pre- or post-cruise stay on Tahiti, Moorea or Bora Bora if you have more time (and money!).

We are definately considering an 11-day Tahitian cruise with Windstar, leaving March 14, 2019. We would also like to stay put for a few days on an island to make all of that traveling from Canada worthwhile. If you were to do this trip again, what are the top 3 places you would recommend to stay? Would you change anything the next time you go? We are former divers but now snorkel everywhere we go (husband burst his eardrum and can’t equalize) and this cruise seems the perfect way to enjoy amazing sea life. Can you give us any suggestions, tips?

I envy you, Jane, at the thought of doing the 11-day cruise in March. You will love it! If you are thinking of booking a pre- or post-cruise stay, Tahiti, Moorea or Bora Bora would be ideal choices, since you will be flying in and out of Papeete and could either stay there, take the ferry or a short flight to Moorea, or take a flight on to Bora Bora, a bit farther away, for your land-based stay. You could also book the overnight romance package through Windstar in Bora Bora while on the cruise. If you didn’t read my post about Bora Bora, I’d suggest you check it out. The 11-night cruise should already build in a night both pre- and post-cruise in Tahiti as ours did, so in that case, maybe you’d want to choose another island for your additional land-based stay. There are multiple opportunities for snorkeling throughout the cruise, including the day the ship spends off Taha’a at the private Motu Mahaea. You may also want to book the Motu Picnic excursion on Huahine instead of the Sacred Sites & Cultural Walk excursion we booked.

Beach Club - st-tropez

A slice of paradise in boho-chic surrounds

Framed by pine trees and offset by a summery soundtrack, Moorea specialises in chilled-out beach bliss.

This beachfront sanctuary blends harmoniously into the natural environment, promising a tropical oasis of laid-back luxury.  Sun-loungers, parasols and cabanas sprawl across the sand, backed by an elegant dining terrace brought to life by a lively dining scene.

The menu is best described as 'no frills' French food, with fresh flavours dominating the dishes and an Asian influence evident in the entries. Start with marinated sea bream with pineapple and pomegranate and then enjoy a hearty meal of farm chicken roasted with garlic, thyme and rosemary.

Fun in the sun

As well as bringing Mediterranean flavours, Moorea has a buzzing party scene which makes it primed for drinks during the day and evening entertainment.

Come here for a late-lunch and linger into the sunset as the revelries rev up a notch, all accompanied by a live soundtrack spun by DJs in the bar-side booth.

The venue's close proximity to the shore means it's easy to arrive via tender directly from your charter yacht  anchored offshore. To discover what yachts are open for charter in the region, view all luxury South of France charter yachts .

French polynesian luxury yacht charter: moorea in the society islands.

Written by Missy Johnston

Moorea French polynesia

Tropical Bay off Moorea, French Polynesia

Exotic Moorea, with its white sand beaches and clear lagoons, is a true tropical paradise. Moorea is the second largest of the Society Islands, covering 53 square miles. It’s easy to understand why James Michener based his mythical Bali Hai on Moorea. The clear waters of Oponohu Bay reflect towering peaks that rise dramatically from the sea. And a wide lagoon surrounds the waterfall-filled mountains and gentle meadows. While there are no true towns on Moorea, there are settled areas with restaurants, food and gift stores.

Moorea, Tahiti island

Palm Trees on Beach in Moorea

A glance up the side of the volcanic mountains will show rain forests and pineapple plantations. Moorea pineapples are well known as the sweetest in the island group and are sought after by cruisers and locals alike.

Moorea French Polynesia

Other activities specific to Moorea are a visit to the Pineapple Factory and Fruit Juice Distillery. The juices are marketed throughout French Polynesia under the name of Rotui and you are sure to be served some of the company’s fruit juice at some point during your travels in this area. There is no specific tour of the factory, however you are welcome to show up during working hours and simply wander through the factory watching the various jobs being done and then visit the factory shop to taste the various juices being made, including fruit liquors and local rum, all available for purchasing as well.

There are several ancient Maraes sites located on Moorea, worth visiting, which were cultural and religious centers for earlier civilizations living in the area.

And you may want to visit The Tiki Village Cultural Center. Here you can see the traditions and life-style of an old Tahitian village, and see local demonstrations of weaving, stone carving, tattooing and painting. The Tiki Village Cultural Center also offers a frequent show highlighting Polynesian dance with a buffet of traditional foods cooked in the in ground fire pit on the premises.

Visited Moorea Beach Cafe twice with my wife while spending a few days in Moorea before Bora Bora on Honeymoon. Sitting by the lagoon is so relaxing and staff were absolutely great. Really cool vibes and music. Both time, food was delicious. AND they do pick up and drop off from and to hotels. Bravo!

We ate at the Moorea Beach Cafe with some friends we had met on holiday having read the reviews on Tripadvisor and we loved it. Superb, friendly service in a beautiful location with fantastic food and drink. We all had fish..the tuna tartare was amazingly good and the parrot fish and maka (?) were excellent. All in all a great time.

Recently ate here while cruising on the Paul Gauguin cruise ship the food was outstanding and the service equally as good.It is outdoor dining right on the water and the views are wonderful. The portions are huge and you may want to consider sharing. The people bend over backwards to please you in every way and drove us right back to our cruise tender.Highly recommend you give this place a try.

This restaurant is friendly, casual and on the water. The food is good - try the smoked salmon pizza - and the prices aren't too bad. The owner is French but spent 20+ years in the restaurant biz in New York before doing a 180 and moving to Moorea. He knows what people like - good service, clean, good food, . He takes the time to spend a few minutes with you to make sure you're enjoying yourself and the staff are attentive. We enjoyed ourselves :)

The weather had been quite windy but miraculously the morning we went was perfection. Cruising around lagoon, watching the surfers, convincing my nervous boyfriend to finally get in water with the sharks/rays, then being given a few options of where we wanted to go to before return. I am generally not one for group tours but I believe this one takes a max of 4 (don’t quote me) which is why I was intrigued. Truly one of the best I have ever done. Our guide was Tihoti, hope I am spelling that right. Massive thanks for a great time!! Read more Written 16 December 2022

The absolute highlight of the trip for myself and my two teenagers. Feeding the rays and fish was so much fun! Ripping around in the jet skis was amazing! We came to Moorea to scuba dive and our dive shop recommended this company and we couldn't have been happier! Go do it! So much fun! :) Read more Written 30 December 2020

My husband and I rented a double jetski and it was our first time ever using one. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the best places to go in Moorea to see wildlife, and during the first five minutes, we saw a pod of at least 50 dolphins surrounding our jetski! Afterwards, we explored two different bays while our guide told us about the history of the area. We then went to a shallow lagoon where we saw various sting rays, tropical fish and black-tipped sharks while we snorkeled around them (our jetski guide provided us with snorkels). We would highly recommend this tour for a fun-filled way to explore the beautiful waters of Moorea! Read more Written 27 December 2019

We started with the 4 wheel drive tour, had lunch and then went jet skiing. I would recommend that ( although it just happened that way.) The water was refreshing after the 4WD tour. The 4WD tour picked us up at our hotel. Our guide on the 4WD tour Etiem, was a tremendous guide and took us to a number of places where he stopped and explained the terrain, flora and fauna. He spoke great English and was easy to understand. We learned so much about the island and the history. The tour was for about 3 hours and was primarily on one side of the Island. We went to the primary overviews, to a local distillery ( including tasting), a pineapple farm, and a tropical garden. Also got to see the tropical garden ( including jam tasting) and how the locals grow and cultivate vanilla. The lunch included was adequate, not something that you would remember but it was helpful to sit for a short time before we headed out to the Jet ski tour. The jet skis were large and in good condition. We toured the two coves, went snorkeling to see underwater statues and then on to swim with the rays and sharks. A lot of rays but only two sharks. You didn’t have to swim since it was on a sand bar. Tremendous experience and great guide! We brought our own snorkel equipment but they have some that you can use. We didn’t end up using fins. Everyone involved with the tour was great and it operated on time. For a first timer this was a great way to see (sea) Moorea! It is an all day trip. Read more Written 9 August 2019

  • wuziq 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles perfect tour if you're short on time This was such a fun experience. We did the 2-hr AM tour which started at about 9am. We elected via booking on Tripadvisor to be picked up from our hotel. They confirmed pickup time of 7:55am in the lobby. No issues, shuttle was on time, picked up other guests along the way. Our tour guide was Niko. We liked him a lot. He worked diligently to ensure that we were safe, informed, and entertained throughout the entire experience. He helped me with my jet ski skills as well, since I seemed to be drifting. We started at the Manava hotel and went west. We visited a few spots: underwater tikis (I think they were called?), sting rays and sharks, and float snorkeling. Niko took pictures throughout for posting on their Facebook page. I'd never been around so much marine life and amazing scenery in such a short period of time, it was awesome. Afterwards they shuttled us back to our hotel. All in all with shuttle it took a little under 4 hours. BTW if you've never used a jet ski before, make sure to let your tour guide know. It's not 100% straightforward. One tip that I figured out is to let your body be a gimbal, with your hips as the pivot, as the jet ski moves all around. Otherwise you're just going to be thrashing around. Let the jet ski move around while your upper body maintains composure and direction. The tip that Niko gave me was to apply acceleration when leaning towards your desired direction so that your jet ski gains purchase on the water - i.e., you need to accelerate to maintain control of direction. The jet ski has a couple compartments for storing stuff. You'll want to bring sunscreen, your own camera, snorkel masks and tubes (if you prefer not to use their provided ones), sunglasses, and maybe a bottle of water. Water shoes, or something that stays on your feet in the water, may help, although we wore just flip flops and it was fine. Anyway I strongly recommend doing this tour, especially if you're short on time. Read more Written 18 February 2019

How MSC’s private island experience is different for cruisers in suites

Ashley Kosciolek

Do you enjoy large cruise ships but still want to feel like you're in the lap of luxury? Passengers booked in MSC Cruises' Yacht Club cabins and suites have access to high-end amenities – both on the ship and off.

Butlers, exclusive dining and a private pool delight guests on board, but perks also await on MSC 's private island, Ocean Cay Marine Reserve , in the Bahamas. You can expect dedicated trams, towel service and a chance to book the nicest cabanas on the island, among other extras.

mbc yacht club moorea

Read on to find out how the MSC Yacht Club Ocean Cay experience differs from that of the average cruiser.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

MSC Ocean Cay Yacht Club beaches vs. regular beaches

mbc yacht club moorea

MSC's Ocean Cay Marine Reserve private island is home to seven (soon to be eight) beaches, and all are public, except one — Ocean House Beach, which is the Yacht Club's exclusive swath of sand. Beyond its exclusivity, the beach has a few other differences from the island's regular beaches.

There, use of lounge chairs and umbrellas is free. Chairs at the other beaches are also free and available on a first-come, first-served basis; however, umbrellas come with an extra cost.

Passengers must sign out towels on board the ship before heading ashore to Ocean Cay's main beaches. Yacht Club passengers can skip that hassle and ask for towels at the towel tent found on Ocean House Beach.

mbc yacht club moorea

Interestingly, I found that several of the public beaches were less crowded than Ocean House Beach. At the latter, chairs were positioned much more closely to one another. If you're willing to walk or hitch a ride on one of the island's trams, you'll find fewer crowds on the farther beaches than if you stick close to the ship.

MSC Ocean Cay Yacht Club food vs. regular dining

mbc yacht club moorea

Free lunch is included for all cruisers who visit Ocean Cay. For Yacht Club travelers, the Ocean House Restaurant — an exclusive waiter-served dining venue where passengers enjoy their meals on a shaded porch — exudes upscale beach vibes.

mbc yacht club moorea

During my visit, the menu included starters like crab ceviche, charred octopus and a salad with romaine, tomatoes, jicama, a poached egg and candied bacon in a citrus dressing. Mains featured locally sourced blackened mahi-mahi, lobster roll, carne asada, a grilled portobello mushroom sandwich and one of the best burgers I've ever tasted during a cruise — a blend of Angus chuck, short ribs and grilled brisket with red onion jam and Monterey Jack cheese. Desserts consisted of creme caramel, mango cheesecake and chocolate cake with coffee sauce.

mbc yacht club moorea

The meals at Ocean House are definitely superior to the fare found at the Seakers buffet, which is where cruisers not staying in the Yacht Club can go for a beach barbecue that serves hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, macaroni and cheese, red beans, roasted potatoes and a slew of salads, drinks and desserts.

mbc yacht club moorea

The food is tasty, but lines can be long. An alternative is to head to one of several food trucks throughout the island. Some are free and dole out the same items offered on the buffet but with shorter lines. Others sell entirely different menu items — lobster grilled cheese, fried calamari, shrimp with watermelon, Caribbean ceviche and octopus salad — with the cost charged to cruisers' onboard accounts.

mbc yacht club moorea

Additionally — and also for an extra fee — a stand near the ship offers specialty coffee and ice cream. (If you're a coffee lover, trust me when I say you won't want to miss the Coco-Nilla Latte.)

MSC Ocean Cay Yacht Club cabanas vs. regular cabanas

mbc yacht club moorea

There are three types of cabanas on Ocean Cay: Ocean Cay Beach Cabanas, Ocean View Yacht Club Cabanas and Beachfront Yacht Club Cabanas. All three types are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

They can hold up to six people each and include cold water, beach towels and chairs, as well as floating mats for use in the water. As the prices increase, so does the number of inclusions. The last two types are only available for booking by Yacht Club passengers.

Ocean Cay Beach Cabanas, found on South Beach, North Beach and Bimini Beach, are the most affordable on the island at $250 for the day. They've got walls on three sides, and they're outfitted with cushioned couches. They include the basic amenities mentioned above, and anyone can rent them.

Next up are the Ocean View Yacht Club Cabanas, which cost $400 for the day and also entitle you to free lunch and drinks, as well as fresh fruit skewers, four sets of snorkel gear and four floating mats. They're found on the Yacht Club's private Ocean House Beach, so they're off-limits to non-Yacht Club guests.

mbc yacht club moorea

The most expensive, however, are the Beachfront Yacht Club Cabanas, located in a different section of the Ocean House area. They carry a $450 price tag but offer all the same extras as Ocean View Yacht Club Cabanas.

The draw? They're closer to the water and, therefore, have better views. Although they aren't on the main part of Ocean House Beach, they are still in the exclusive area, near the restaurant, so you don't have to go far to grab food.

Ultimately, the only thing being in the Yacht Club affords you in this case is the option to book more expensive cabanas.

MSC Ocean Cay Yacht Club trams vs. regular trams

mbc yacht club moorea

At 95 acres, Ocean Cay is sizable. If you're fit, you can walk from one end to the other in about 15 minutes, but if you don't have great mobility or if you're easily overheated, reaching some of the island's more remote beaches can be difficult on foot. That's why MSC offers tram shuttles.

Passengers in standard cabins will find tram stops with shaded waiting areas throughout the island. However, waits can be long, especially if many other people are also in need of a lift.

Yacht Club cruisers can take advantage of trams exclusively for the Yacht Club. They run between a special tent (with free cold water to sip while you wait) set up just inside the entrance to Ocean Cay and the Ocean House beach and restaurant area.

You can make special requests for stops, which the regular trams usually won't accommodate. For example, you might ask to go straight from the tent to South Beach for a volleyball game without stopping anywhere else first.

MSC Ocean Cay Yacht Club activities vs. regular activities

mbc yacht club moorea

This is the one category where the island's public spaces beat the Ocean House area by a mile. If you're looking for something to do other than eating, drinking or lazing by the beach, you'll have to head back toward the ship because there's not much going on in the exclusive areas.

Everything from massages, lighthouse tours and water sports equipment rentals to beach parties, volleyball games and shore excursions takes place elsewhere. However, perhaps that's by design. The Yacht Club is generally quiet, even on board, and the line likely prefers to keep the raucousness to other locations.

Bottom line

mbc yacht club moorea

The MSC Yacht Club experience is more exclusive than the standard one at Ocean Cay, with extras like butler service, dedicated trams, towel service, access to pricier cabanas and a private beach and restaurant with better food and shorter waits.

However, all of the action — shore excursions, pickup volleyball games, beach parties, the lighthouse show — happens in the areas that are accessible to everyone, which significantly levels the playing field.

Additionally, items like specialty coffee, ice cream and for-fee food truck orders cost extra for everyone — even Yacht Club passengers.

Overall, Ocean Cay offers a great day for anyone who enjoys the beach, regardless of cabin type.

The Comprehensive Guide to Moscow Nightlife

  • Posted on April 14, 2018 July 26, 2018
  • by Kings of Russia
  • 8 minute read

mbc yacht club moorea

Moscow’s nightlife scene is thriving, and arguably one of the best the world has to offer – top-notch Russian women, coupled with a never-ending list of venues, Moscow has a little bit of something for everyone’s taste. Moscow nightlife is not for the faint of heart – and if you’re coming, you better be ready to go Friday and Saturday night into the early morning.

This comprehensive guide to Moscow nightlife will run you through the nuts and bolts of all you need to know about Moscow’s nightclubs and give you a solid blueprint to operate with during your time in Moscow.

What you need to know before hitting Moscow nightclubs

Prices in moscow nightlife.

Before you head out and start gaming all the sexy Moscow girls , we have to talk money first. Bring plenty because in Moscow you can never bring a big enough bankroll. Remember, you’re the man so making a fuzz of not paying a drink here or there will not go down well.

Luckily most Moscow clubs don’t do cover fees. Some electro clubs will charge 15-20$, depending on their lineup. There’s the odd club with a minimum spend of 20-30$, which you’ll drop on drinks easily. By and large, you can scope out the venues for free, which is a big plus.

Bottle service is a great deal in Moscow. At top-tier clubs, it starts at 1,000$. That’ll go a long way with premium vodka at 250$, especially if you have three or four guys chipping in. Not to mention that it’s a massive status boost for getting girls, especially at high-end clubs.

Without bottle service, you should estimate a budget of 100-150$ per night. That is if you drink a lot and hit the top clubs with the hottest girls. Scale down for less alcohol and more basic places.

Dress code & Face control

Door policy in Moscow is called “face control” and it’s always the guy behind the two gorillas that gives the green light if you’re in or out.

In Moscow nightlife there’s only one rule when it comes to dress codes:

You can never be underdressed.

People dress A LOT sharper than, say, in the US and that goes for both sexes. For high-end clubs, you definitely want to roll with a sharp blazer and a pocket square, not to mention dress shoes in tip-top condition. Those are the minimum requirements to level the playing field vis a vis with other sharply dressed guys that have a lot more money than you do. Unless you plan to hit explicit electro or underground clubs, which have their own dress code, you are always on the money with that style.

Getting in a Moscow club isn’t as hard as it seems: dress sharp, speak English at the door and look like you’re in the mood to spend all that money that you supposedly have (even if you don’t). That will open almost any door in Moscow’s nightlife for you.

Types of Moscow Nightclubs

In Moscow there are four types of clubs with the accompanying female clientele:

High-end clubs:

These are often crossovers between restaurants and clubs with lots of tables and very little space to dance. Heavy accent on bottle service most of the time but you can work the room from the bar as well. The hottest and most expensive girls in Moscow go there. Bring deep pockets and lots of self-confidence and you have a shot at swooping them.

Regular Mid-level clubs:

They probably resemble more what you’re used to in a nightclub: big dancefloors, stages and more space to roam around. Bottle service will make you stand out more but you can also do well without. You can find all types of girls but most will be in the 6-8 range. Your targets should always be the girls drinking and ideally in pairs. It’s impossible not to swoop if your game is at least half-decent.

Basic clubs/dive bars:

Usually spots with very cheap booze and lax face control. If you’re dressed too sharp and speak no Russian, you might attract the wrong type of attention so be vigilant. If you know the local scene you can swoop 6s and 7s almost at will. Usually students and girls from the suburbs.

Electro/underground clubs:

Home of the hipsters and creatives. Parties there don’t mean meeting girls and getting drunk but doing pills and spacing out to the music. Lots of attractive hipster girls if that is your niche. That is its own scene with a different dress code as well.

mbc yacht club moorea

What time to go out in Moscow

Moscow nightlife starts late. Don’t show up at bars and preparty spots before 11pm because you’ll feel fairly alone. Peak time is between 1am and 3am. That is also the time of Moscow nightlife’s biggest nuisance: concerts by artists you won’t know and who only distract your girls from drinking and being gamed. From 4am to 6am the regular clubs are emptying out but plenty of people, women included, still hit up one of the many afterparty clubs. Those last till well past 10am.

As far as days go: Fridays and Saturdays are peak days. Thursday is an OK day, all other days are fairly weak and you have to know the right venues.

The Ultimate Moscow Nightclub List

Short disclaimer: I didn’t add basic and electro clubs since you’re coming for the girls, not for the music. This list will give you more options than you’ll be able to handle on a weekend.

Preparty – start here at 11PM

Classic restaurant club with lots of tables and a smallish bar and dancefloor. Come here between 11pm and 12am when the concert is over and they start with the actual party. Even early in the night tons of sexy women here, who lean slightly older (25 and up).

The second floor of the Ugolek restaurant is an extra bar with dim lights and house music tunes. Very small and cozy with a slight hipster vibe but generally draws plenty of attractive women too. A bit slower vibe than Valenok.

Very cool, spread-out venue that has a modern library theme. Not always full with people but when it is, it’s brimming with top-tier women. Slow vibe here and better for grabbing contacts and moving on.

mbc yacht club moorea

High-end: err on the side of being too early rather than too late because of face control.

Secret Room

Probably the top venue at the moment in Moscow . Very small but wildly popular club, which is crammed with tables but always packed. They do parties on Thursdays and Sundays as well. This club has a hip-hop/high-end theme, meaning most girls are gold diggers, IG models, and tattooed hip hop chicks. Very unfavorable logistics because there is almost no room no move inside the club but the party vibe makes it worth it. Strict face control.

Close to Secret Room and with a much more favorable and spacious three-part layout. This place attracts very hot women but also lots of ball busters and fakes that will leave you blue-balled. Come early because after 4am it starts getting empty fast. Electronic music.

A slightly kitsch restaurant club that plays Russian pop and is full of gold diggers, semi-pros, and men from the Caucasus republics. Thursday is the strongest night but that dynamic might be changing since Secret Room opened its doors. You can swoop here but it will be a struggle.

mbc yacht club moorea

Mid-level: your sweet spot in terms of ease and attractiveness of girls for an average budget.

Started going downwards in 2018 due to lax face control and this might get even worse with the World Cup. In terms of layout one of the best Moscow nightclubs because it’s very big and bottle service gives you a good edge here. Still attracts lots of cute girls with loose morals but plenty of provincial girls (and guys) as well. Swooping is fairly easy here.

I haven’t been at this place in over a year, ever since it started becoming ground zero for drunken teenagers. Similar clientele to Icon but less chic, younger and drunker. Decent mainstream music that attracts plenty of tourists. Girls are easy here as well.

Sort of a Coyote Ugly (the real one in Moscow sucks) with party music and lots of drunken people licking each others’ faces. Very entertaining with the right amount of alcohol and very easy to pull in there. Don’t think about staying sober in here, you’ll hate it.

Artel Bessonitsa/Shakti Terrace

Electronic music club that is sort of a high-end place with an underground clientele and located between the teenager clubs Icon and Gipsy. Very good music but a bit all over the place with their vibe and their branding. You can swoop almost any type of girl here from high-heeled beauty to coked-up hipsters, provided they’re not too sober.

mbc yacht club moorea

Afterparty: if by 5AM  you haven’t pulled, it’s time to move here.

Best afterparty spot in terms of trying to get girls. Pretty much no one is sober in there and savage gorilla game goes a long way. Lots of very hot and slutty-looking girls but it can be hard to tell apart who is looking for dick and who is just on drugs but not interested. If by 9-10am you haven’t pulled, it is probably better to surrender.

The hipster alternative for afterparties, where even more drugs are in play. Plenty of attractive girls there but you have to know how to work this type of club. A nicer atmosphere and better music but if you’re desperate to pull, you’ll probably go to Miks.

Weekday jokers: if you’re on the hunt for some sexy Russian girls during the week, here are two tips to make your life easier.

Chesterfield

Ladies night on Wednesdays means this place gets pretty packed with smashed teenagers and 6s and 7s. Don’t pull out the three-piece suit in here because it’s a “simpler” crowd. Definitely your best shot on Wednesdays.

If you haven’t pulled at Chesterfield, you can throw a Hail Mary and hit up Garage’s Black Music Wednesdays. Fills up really late but there are some cute Black Music groupies in here. Very small club. Thursday through Saturday they do afterparties and you have an excellent shot and swooping girls that are probably high.

Shishas Sferum

This is pretty much your only shot on Mondays and Tuesdays because they offer free or almost free drinks for women. A fairly low-class club where you should watch your drinks. Lime-stone staircase, wooden beams, and bar stools give the place a vintage vibe. The DJs mostly play Electronic music at this pub. One of the most exciting features of this club is that there are no menus. It would be best to inform the bartender what you want to drink, and he will serve it to you. Do not worry, as all the mixologists can converse in English.

This after-party venue makes you feel like you have been transported to Berlin. The interiors of this place have an industrial feel to them. During the day, this acts as a bike repair shop. But at night, you can party at Entuziast till late at night. Mostly the hipsters tend to party at this place. The bar is made up of metal, and you can see racing flags all over the place. You can get a wide array of choices when it comes to beers and cider. Craft beer is extremely popular at this joint.  During the summers, you can sit outside on the beach chairs arranged on the deck. Whether you want to grab a couple of drinks or dance into the night with your friends – you will find a spot for yourself in this city. It is advisable to try out almost all the places mentioned above when you are visiting Moscow. The Russian party life is different from any other culture. They believe in working hard and partying even harder. They mostly like to party when they are done with their work for the week. If you want to experience that culture, you must prepare yourself to party till the sun comes up. It will be one of the most memorable experiences of your life.
