Vessel Walkthrough:

Teaming up with yacht designer Evan K. Marshall, the shipyard seamlessly blends its renowned long-range seaworthiness with a contemporary aesthetic. The OA 90R, LUNA, epitomizes a best-of-both-worlds strategy by modernizing Ocean Alexander’s classic design elements. This includes a full-beam salon and extensive glazing, all while retaining practical features like a 3,000-gallon fuel capacity and an enclosed pilothouse for dedicated cruising.

LUNA places significant emphasis on volume. With a beam of 22 feet 5 inches, the yacht maximizes interior space, particularly evident on the lower deck. Here, a forepeak VIP stateroom stands out, competing with master staterooms on other yachts. This VIP space boasts a walk-around king berth, walk-in cedar closets, wooden cabinets, recessed overhead lighting, hull side windows, and a comfortable sofa.

Down the companionway from the VIP are two guest staterooms featuring twin berths, hull side windows, and ensuite heads with separate shower stalls. The berths in each stateroom are adjustable, sliding together to create a queen-sized bed.

The master stateroom is up a level, forward on the main deck. It features a forward-facing king-size berth designed with his-and-her sections to minimize movement transfer. Additionally, there are two walk-in cedar closets, Cambria-stone-topped nightstands, and wood-and-leather wall paneling. (Cambria is a manufactured stone based on mined quartz.) To the port side, there are dual armchairs with a table, while to starboard, there is a desk. The generously sized windows on both sides, measuring more than 3 by 8 feet, provide expansive views. For privacy, push-button motorized shades are available. The master's en suite head is located forward, equipped with a heated sole, a separate toilet compartment, and a Cambria-clad shower stall.

The salon of LUNA is particularly spacious, featuring a U-shaped sofa to port, complemented by a three-seat sofa on the opposite side. Abundant ambient light fills the space, courtesy of metal-framed 5-by-5-foot side windows and glass doors positioned to the sides and aft. This arrangement ensures a continuous connection to the sea from nearly every vantage point on the main deck. The headroom in the salon makes LUNA feel like a much larger yacht, with mega-style amenities including a drop-down 55-inch TV with Crestron and iPad mini controls.

A fixed cabinet separates the salon from the dining area with an eight-seat table that runs fore-to-aft on the port side. This layout creates space to the starboard for a wet-bar island, featuring a concealed stainless-steel Blanco sink, drink-chiller buckets, a fridge, and a wine chiller. The bar boasts a stone top with light-oak trim and high-gloss walnut panels, making it a visually striking setup for serving cocktails or arranging a buffet.

Forward of the dining area is a country-kitchen-style galley. To the port side, a breakfast nook features an L-shaped settee and a Cambria-top table that complements the countertops. The galley is equipped with Bosch cooktop and oven, a full-size Fisher & Paykel fridge, Thermador microwave, an Asko dishwasher, and a Franke sink. For added privacy during formal dinners or parties, two pocket doors can be closed to seclude the galley.

Ascending a floating staircase leads to the sky lounge. Enjoying a 360-degree view is not limited to the helm station but extends to every corner, whether you're at the tiered wet bar with fridge drawers or the low-profile, L-shaped settee accommodating eight. Similar to the salon, the sky lounge offers generous headroom at 6 feet, 9 inches. Sliding glass doors open to the bridge deck aft, featuring its own wet bar, an electric grill, twin corner lounge seats, and, optionally, an eight-person Jacuzzi.

Forward in the sky lounge is the command center, featuring a futuristic helm station with a raised floating console housing three 24-inch Garmin multifunction displays. Overseeing house breakers and switch circuits is an OctoPlex control system, enabling the monitoring and switching of all electrical components via a touchscreen. Additional systems and controls are integrated into the flat dash, and standard features include bow and stern thrusters.

After dropping anchor, unwind on the main aft deck where you can enjoy shade beneath the sky lounge overhang. This area also provides alfresco dining and comfortable transom seating. With side-boarding gates and twin swim-platform staircases, accessing the water becomes more convenient. Keep the festivities alive with a drop-down 40-inch TV and a wet bar equipped with a fridge and ice maker.

Enhance your social experience by accessing the bow lounge through a side-deck staircase. Discover a U-shaped settee with a table, providing an ideal setting for sunset viewing. Just forward, a sun pad accommodates four guests comfortably. Elliptical grab rails are strategically designed to ensure safety, featuring two stanchions at each support spot.

Owners can indulge in ample relaxation at the bow with guests, as LUNA is crafted for cruising with crew. Standard features include two cabins, a galley, a head with a shower, and a lounge area equipped with a 24-inch TV. The crew quarters boast a decor finished with oak wood and leather panels, offering flexibility for use by teenagers or unexpected overnight guests if desired.

The beach club features an air-conditioned, glass-enclosed lounge, serving as an ideal vantage point for observing kids in the water. This versatile space transforms into a semi-private oasis for morning coffee or afternoon cocktails, equipped with a bar, fridge, ice maker, 40-inch TV, and an L-shaped settee with an ottoman. Stylish teak decking enhances the aesthetic, and the glass doors are equipped with an inflated gasket to prevent water intrusion.

Ocean Alexander opted for a wave-piercing bow, departing from the traditional bulbous design on the 90R. Unlike the conventional approach of pushing water to facilitate the yacht's movement over waves, this innovative bow style parts the seas, enabling the hull to smoothly glide through with reduced resistance.

Situated between the diamond-plated sole and dual 50KW Kohler generators are twin 1,900 hp MAN V-12 2000 diesel engines, driving Aqua 22HS shafts and nibral propellers. Engineered in collaboration with Arrabito Naval Architects, this power configuration provides a maximum range of 407 nautical miles at 25 knots, consuming 185 gallons per hour. Scaling back the yacht's speed to 9.9 knots reduces fuel burn to 27 gallons per hour, extending the range to 1,100 nautical miles.

Inside Look: Ocean Alexander 90R

It wasn’t even a stormy day, or an unusual day of any kind, when the couple pulled in their nearly 40-foot powerboat for refueling. They’d done the drill before, having cruised around Puget Sound, Washington, and other parts of the Pacific Northwest with their three kids. But on this day, the wife had made an unfortunate footwear choice. She slipped out of her sandals while stepping ashore. “Her leg went up onto the dock and got caught under a cleat,” the husband says. “She ended up hanging in the water, with her head 2 feet underwater, and her leg was caught in the cleat. She figured, this is how it ends. She was pinned in between the dock and the boat, and I didn’t see her.”

A good Samaritan ran over to alert the husband and help free the wife, whose ankle ended up breaking in the process. “She ended up making it out, but she was understandably hesitant about boating after that,” he says. “We thought maybe if we had a bigger boat, maybe something with thrusters for more safety, wider walkways, higher railings…”

In September 2020, during Labor Day weekend, they saw an Ocean Alexander 90R at Roche Harbor on San Juan Island. It was just two years after the model had made its debut at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in Florida, launching a whole new Revolution series for the builder.

In regard to size, the 90R was quite a jump from the couple’s previous boat, but, boy, did it look safe—and stunning.

“It was beautiful, new, modern, felt like floor-to-ceiling glass everywhere,” the husband says. “The main-level master was fantastic. The kitchen was just outstanding. When we saw that, we decided to get one.”

They bought Hull No. 1 on the brokerage market and had it shipped from Florida to their home waters in the Pacific Northwest, where they rechristened it Voyager . The name is an homage to the husband’s years growing up in Orlando, getting to sit in the Kennedy Space Center grandstands with astronauts’ families because his uncle worked on the launchpad. It’s also a nod to the couple’s older son, who is studying microbiology and astrobiology. “If he had his way, he’d be on the first manned mission to Mars,” the husband says. “ Voyager was the first that ever went outside of our solar system, so that name fit for our family.” They even worked with a graphic designer to create a mission patch and logo for the yacht, focused on the idea of exploring new frontiers.

And explore they have, all the way up through Desolation Sound, British Columbia. Most of the time, the couple runs the boat in and around Puget Sound. They often welcome guests aboard for work outings, charitable events and other causes. They’ve offered Voyager’s use as part of a fundraiser for the Washington Autism Alliance and in a fundraiser to benefit a Seattle zoo. Political events have also happened on board, including fundraisers for members of Congress.

“We’re going to be in the boat parade here soon with the University of Washington cheer team and band director on board, with the band following on a boat behind us,” the husband says. “It’s a big recruiting event.”

They both continue to love boating—including the tasks of running the boat themselves. That’s how cruising has always felt best to them, including all the years with the smaller boat, when they’d pile in all three kids and head out for some whale watching or a weekend getaway in the islands. Everyone would sleep on the V-berth forward and the convertible lounge aft.

The Ocean Alexander 90R obviously has more substantial accommodations for eight to 10 guests—including the main-deck master stateroom that the couple loved from the start and an open-plan sky lounge with a bar where everyone can spread out and relax. Even still, for this couple, the desire to have some do-it-yourself fun on the water remains the same. They recently hired a yacht manager for the 90R who serves as a jack-of-all-trades, pitching in with whatever is needed, but on most days when cruising in the Pacific Northwest, the husband is at the helm, and the wife is handling lines.

“We try to dispel the idea that we’re snobby yachting types,” he says with a laugh. “Whether it’s us or friends and family on board, it’s usually just us.”

And in an effort to be sure there will never be another mishap, they have outfitted Voyager with the latest and greatest of everything from Wi-Fi to helm electronics. “I made sure that all our equipment and upgrades are up-to-date,” he says. “Things like night vision—we have all of that.”

The Revolution Series

Ocean Alexander’s Revolution series of yachts is now offered in three models: the 89-foot 27R, 97-foot 30R and 117-foot 35R. The flagship model, with a gross tonnage of 299, made its debut at the 2021 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. The builder worked with designer Evan K. Marshall and Arrabito Naval Architects to evolve the models, which have extensive glazing for wide-scale views from the inside out.

45 Years of Boatbuilding

Ocean Alexander got its start in 1977. The company’s first build was the Mark 1, a 50-foot pilothouse trawler that liveaboard cruisers coveted for not only its onboard space but also its seaworthy hull, which was based on an Ed Monk design. Additional milestones have included construction of the 71-foot Night Hawk , which set a size record for Asian boatbuilding in 1984, and completion of the first 100-foot-long Ocean Alexander in 2005.

Built to Battle in Blue Water

Ocean Alexander incorporates numerous techniques and materials to engineer sturdy yachts. Finite element analysis is used for modeling in a virtual space before construction begins. I-beams made of aircraft-grade aluminum are incorporated because they’re 10 times stiffer than wood or fiberglass, according to the builder. Unidirectional carbon fiber is used to reinforce critical areas, and fuel tanks are built with military-grade aluminum alloy.

50' Ocean Alexander Overview

Lina Vida is a classic Ocean Alexander Pilothouse trawler. She has a solid fiberglass hull and superstructure and the Portuguese bridge surrounding the pilothouse is quite distinctive. Luna Vida's interior features a wide-open salon and galley on the deckhouse level, a two-stateroom floorplan with a spacious amidships master stateroom with ensuite head , a guest stateroom in the bow and a guest head are located on the lower level. The raised pilothouse comes with port and starboard deck access doors with opening windows, large surrounding windows and a large built-in dinette that can convert to a berth. The very spacious top deck has plenty of room for entertaining, dining or relaxing and the overhang shelters the cockpit. Additional features include a transom door, port and starboard bulwark doors, wide covered side decks and a davit on the top deck for the Boston Whaler tender.

50' Ocean Alexander Walkthrough

Access to Luna Vida's main deck can be obtained via port and starboard bulwark doors amidships or via her swim platform and transom door. Once on her main deck you can enter the salon from the cockpit through her beautiful french doors or take the ladder up to her top deck. Access to her pilothouse is through both port and starboard doors. Once in her salon, the galley is forward followed by stairs up to the pilothouse or down to the engine room and master stateroom. In the master stateroom the ensuite head is to port. Further forward to starboard is the guest head and then the guest stateroom in the bow. Another stairwell outside the berthing compartments leads up to the pilothouse. The helm is centered in the pilothouse with the U-shaped dinette raised behind it. Forward of the pilothouse is the Portuguese bridge and large foredeck.

50' Ocean Alexander Accommodations

Luna Vida has accommodations to sleep eleven.

The master stateroom sleeps two very comfortably and the guest stateroom features two and a half single bunks that can sleep two adults and one small child.

The large L-shaped sofa in the salon can sleep two singles and the love seat folds out to sleep two.

The dinette in the pilothouse can also be converted to sleep two.

50' Ocean Alexander Salon

The very spacious salon is highlighted by the beautiful french doors leading to her cockpit. Facing forward from the cockpit is an entertainment center inside the french doors to port with an AM/FM/Cassette radio and amplifier, 19" Insignia Flat Screen TV and a liquor cabinet. Forward of the entertainment center is a love seat that converts to a twin berth and has storage underneath. To starboard is a large L-shaped sofa spanning the starboard bulkhead and galley counter. A large movable table with folding extensions can be positioned in the salon for dining or entertaining. The salon furniture is all in very good condition and cushions are covered in a medium green vinyl. The boat is carpeted throughout which is also in good condition. Large windows wrap the salon, several open and all have blinds

50' Ocean Alexander Galley

The large U-shaped galley is forward of the salon to starboard. Along the forward side of the galley is a mini refrigerator/freezer (unknown condition) and a three place Master Chef gas stove with oven. Above the counter on that side of the galley is a Black & Decker Toast-R-Oven, Magic Chef Microwave oven, Black & Decker Spacemaker Coffee Maker and Black & Decker DustBuster hand vac. Along the starboard bulkhead is a double basin stainless steel sink. A large counter top divides the salon and galley with lots of over and under counter storage and a wine glass rack. Large windows with blinds provide plenty of natural light and a brass barometer and clock are over the stairwell to the master stateroom.

50' Ocean Alexander Raised Pilothouse

The raised pilothouse can be accessed from the side decks through the access doors or from two interior stairwells, one from the salon/galley and the other from the berthing compartment. Once in the pilothouse, the helm is centered on three large windows overlooking the Portuguese bridge, foredeck and bow and has a large sliding hatch above the captains chair. At the helm, the DC power panel is located below the helm to port and the AC power panel is below the helm to starboard. A mini refrigerator is built into the helm all the way to starboard. A large captains chair provides easy access to all the controls and electronics. The equipment currently installed includes:

The large U-shaped dinette is located along the aft bulkhead of the pilothouse. Comfortably will seat 5-6 and converts into a twin berth. There is a large amount of storage under the dinette and the large windows provide a lot of natural light.

50' Ocean Alexander Master Stateroom

The master stateroom is located amidships on the lower level and under the pilothouse. The island queen berth is centered along the starboard bulkhead and has built in nightstands and reading lights on each side. Three portlights with screens provide natural light and fresh air. Along the aft bulkhead is a large closet and stairway to the galley/salon. A large makeup table and mirror is located on the forward bulkhead of the master stateroom. An Insignia 19" flat screen TV is mounted above the makeup table.

The ensuite head is located aft and to port in the space and features:

50' Ocean Alexander Guest Stateroom

The guest stateroom is located in the bow of the boat and features one full size single bunk to starboard, one full size single bunk and one half size child bunk to port. There is a safety rail for the child bunk, a large hanging locker and several drawers for starage. A portlight with screen on each side and an large overhead hatch with screen provide plenty of natural light and fresh air. A reading lamp is located above each full size bunk.
