Formula 1 Powerboat Racing Championship Lands in Alton

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Alton, IL – Jan. 25, 2024) Ever dreamed of watching boats flying across the waters of the Mississippi River at speeds in excess of 120 miles per hour? That dream has just become reality with the news that Formula 1 Powerboat racing is coming to the Mississippi River in Alton June 21-23 with a multi-day event featuring Formula 1 Powerboats, Tunnel Boats and Tri-Hulls. The Formula 1 Powerboat Championship will take place on the Mississippi River at the Alton riverfront with a series of six to eight races. The races will include the sleek and glamorous F1 Powerboats, 12-foot Tunnel boats, Tri-Hulls based on a pleasure boat design and J-Hydro, 12-foot Knee Rider Boats for racers ages 9 to 16 years. “This is a terrific addition to the sporting events the Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau has been able to attract over the last three years,” Cory Jobe, President and CEO of the Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau said. “We want to thank the City of Alton for approving this event and we are looking forward to enjoying a weekend of powerboat racing and community fun along the city’s riverfront.” The event is expected to draw 20,000-plus spectators and bring in an economic impact to the region of over $2.5 million. The Tourism Bureau is working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and U.S. Coast Guard for approval and assistance with water safety. “On behalf of the Formula 1 Powerboat Championship, we are very excited to bring Formula 1 powerboat racing back to Alton,” said Tim Seebold, Managing Director of Formula 1 Powerboat Championship. “It will be fantastic returning to the Mississippi River in downtown Alton Illinois showcasing our world class Formula 1 drivers and their technologically advanced powerboats in conjunction with the Midwest Nationals.” F1 Powerboat competition begins with a 20-plus boat field lined on the start pontoon with their engines silent. At the drop of the green flag, the drivers ignite their engines, shooting thousands of gallons of rooster tailed water over 150-feet high as they accelerate to the first turn. The spectator friendly racing on a tight course is made up of a combination of right and left hand hairpin turns with various straightaways providing deck to deck action in front of fans. No two laps are the same due to the ever-changing wind and water conditions. “Our family friendly events have an open pit area for the fans to meet the drivers and marvel at the machines they drive,” Seebold noted. “Alton holds a special place in my heart with its rich powerboat racing history. Our family began racing on the Mississippi River starting with my grandfather back in 1939 and has continued with my father, older brother, and myself. Growing up in the greater metropolitan St. Louis area strengthened mine, like many St. Louis area fans F1 Powerboat racing enthusiasm as we all attended the St. Louis Grand Prix races for over 38 years. It has been fantastic to bring powerboat racing back to the area with all the local support. I know this will be a monumental event for everyone involved.” More details on the races and additional riverfront activities will be announced closer to the event. -30- (The Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau is a certified Destination Marketing Organization serving Madison, Jersey, Calhoun, Macoupin, Montgomery and Greene counties and East St. Louis in St. Clair County. The Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission has announced the return of Formula 1 Powerboat Racing to Shreveport-Bossier with the Red River Rumble F1 Powerboat Showdown, scheduled to take place May 24-26, 2024, over Memorial Day weekend. This event will feature approximately 50 high-speed powerboats along the Red River.

“On behalf of the Formula 1 Powerboat Championship, we are very excited to bring Formula 1 powerboat racing back to Shreveport-Bossier for the first time since 2018,” says Tim Seebold , Managing Director of the Formula 1 Powerboat Championship. “Shreveport holds a special place in my heart as it was the site of my last National Championship before retiring from driving.”

The Formula 1 Powerboat Championship is an eight-race series contested across North America. US Powerboat racing has a 120-year heritage that began with the formation of the American Powerboat Association. For the last six decades, F1 powerboats have been recognized as one of the world's most spectacular racing vehicles. This Powerboat event provides a prime opportunity for Shreveport-Bossier to highlight its expertise in hosting water-based sporting events, drawing more visitors to our vibrant city.

“We are looking forward to bringing Powerboats back to the Red River and Shreveport-Bossier in 2024-2026,” says Sara Nelms , Director of Sports for the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission. “We are excited to host this event in conjunction with Mudbug Madness and showcase the world class Formula 1 drivers. Thank you to the Red River Waterway Commission and Margaritaville Resort Casino that have already come on as sponsors for the event.”

The Red River Rumble F1 Powerboat Showdown will happen the same weekend as Mudbug Madness 2024 in Festival Plaza in downtown Shreveport. This F1 Powerboat event will present viewers with heart pounding, up close and personal, racing action in downtown Shreveport, and will enhance the Mudbug Madness experience for festival goers. General admission viewing is also free to the public and there will also be a VIP area at the Shreveport Aquarium and tickets will go on sale at a later date.

“On behalf of the Mudbug Madness Festival, we are excited that Formula 1 Powerboat Racing will be taking place the same weekend as our festival on the Shreveport Riverfront,’ says Terri Matthews , Event Coordinator for Mudbug Madness. “Our mission is to support and promote projects and events to enhance downtown and the synergy this will bring will do just that.”

The competition begins with 20 boat fields lined up awaiting the start. At the drop of the flag, the drivers ignite their engines and accelerate towards the first turn. This spectator-friendly event provides non-stop racing action due to the tight courses which are made up of right and left-hand turns. No two laps are the same due to the changing wind and water conditions, making the F1 boat one of the most challenging racing machines to conquer.

“The Commission is excited to announce its participation in the F1 Powerboat Championship Series in 2024,” says Dustin Hayes , Marketing Director for the Red River Waterway Commission. “Our primary objective is to promote the economic and recreational development of the Waterway. Events like this, held in conjunction with Mudbug Madness, help raise awareness and showcase the recreational opportunities available along the Waterway. We highly value our ongoing partnership with the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission and eagerly anticipate future collaborations as we serve the people of Caddo-Bossier and the surrounding areas encompassing the Red River Waterway District.”

In addition to the riveting races, the event will feature a family-friendly atmosphere, complete with an open pit area that allows fans to meet the drivers and get a close look at the machines they drive. This opportunity to connect with the sport and its athletes adds an extra layer of excitement for attendees of all ages.

“We’re excited to be the exclusive casino sponsor for the Red River Rumble F1 Powerboat Showdown in 2024,” says Dan Ihm , General Manager and Senior Vice President for Margaritaville Bossier City. “This sponsorship reflects our commitment to boosting community engagement and economic growth, while bringing the pulse-pounding excitement of high-speed boat racing to Shreveport-Bossier. Get ready for a weekend of Margaritaville-style thrills."

The Red River Rumble F1 Powerboat Showdown promises to be an exhilarating blend of high-speed competition and family-friendly entertainment. Boating enthusiasts and community members are invited to join for a memorable weekend of powerboat racing along the Red River in Shreveport-Bossier.

What To Look Out For

As the 2024 Formula 1 season gears up, fans and teams alike are poised for a thrilling start with several key developments shaping the landscape of the sport. The stability in driver line-ups, with no changes from the previous season, sets a unique precedent for continuity and competition.

For the first time in Formula 1 history, every driver who concluded the last season will return with their respective teams, including Daniel Ricciardo taking a full-time seat following his mid-season replacement of Nyck de Vries the previous year. This stability extends to reserve drivers, although McLaren has introduced changes in their reserve line-up. Out goes Alex Palou, and in his place, McLaren has brought in fellow IndyCar racer Pato O'Ward and Toyota World Endurance Championship racer and Le Mans 24 Hours winner Ryo Hirakawa.

On the team front, notable changes include Red Bull’s second team transitioning to a new identity under the name 'Visa Cash App RB', and Alfa Romeo's rebranding to 'Stake F1 Team' under the Sauber banner.

The 2024 season boasts a record 24 grands prix, including the return of the Chinese Grand Prix and the reinstatement of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at Imola. Notably, the season will feature races on Saturdays for the first time since 1985 (ignoring Vegas, of course), adjusting for the Ramadan period.

From a technical standpoint, the regulations remain largely unchanged, but the introduction of a 'driver cooling scoop' and continued development on reducing spray in wet conditions marks any minor changes.

Red Bull will be wanting to continue the dominance it saw throughout 2023. And if the reports are true, they could be doing this with a significant change to their aerodynamic concept, taking design elements from the likes of Mercedes, who, coincidentally, are moving more towards a more Red Bull-shaped machine.

Aston Martin, Ferrari, and McLaren are also teams to watch, with each of them edging towards the performance of the Milton Keynes car towards the end of last year. They'll be hoping they've not only made a significant jump in development during the Winter break, but that they can utilise it off the simulator.

F1 2024 season: Full race calendar, schedule, driver line-ups and sprints latest

M ax Verstappen came out on top of an exhilarating Canadian Grand Prix after rain Montreal produced a superb spectacle for the neutral.

George Russell, Lando Norris and Verstappen all held the lead at different points of the race, with various safety cars and small driving errors eventually allowing Verstappen to further extend his lead atop the drivers’ standing.

Norris and Russell finished second and third respectively, while fourth-placed Lewis Hamilton described his dive as ‘one of the worst races’ of his F1 career.

In spite of their drivers’ disappointment, the performance of Mercedes might well be the story to take out of the weekend, as various upgrades and tweaks launched them into the mix with Red Bull and McLaren.

Will there be sprint races in 2024?

  • What is the full driver line-up?
  • What is the full calendar and schedule?
  • What are the standings?
  • How to watch on TV

When is the next race of the 2024 season?

The ninth race of the 2024 F1 season is the Canadian Grand Prix, which takes place from Friday, June 7 to Sunday, June 9.

What are the current standings?

Drivers’ championship, constructors’ championship, how many f1 races will there be in 2024.

There will be 24 races on the calendar this year, culminating with the season finale in Abu Dhabi on December 8.

Six sprint races will be staged in 2024, the same number as in 2023. The venues, however, have shifted from last year with China and Miami the additions, replacing Azerbaijan and Belgium. Austria, the Circuit of the Americas, Brazil and Qatar remain in place.

In short, the 2024 sprint race weekends are as follows.

  • Chinese Grand Prix, April 19-21
  • Miami Grand Prix, May 3-5
  • Austrian Grand Prix, June 28-30
  • United States Grand Prix, October 18-20
  • Sao Paulo Grand Prix, November 1-3
  • Qatar Grand Prix, November 29-December 31

The format, however, has been tweaked. For 2024, sprint qualifying takes places on Friday (rather than Saturday). The sprint race itself will be on Saturday, before qualifying for the Grand Prix, which still takes place on the Sunday.

The top eight drivers in the sprint races will score points from eight to the winner and one for the eighth-placed driver. Again, the sprint races will be approximately 100km – or roughly a third of a grand prix distance.

When is the summer break?

With a record-breaking 24-race season, the built-in breaks throughout the season are critical for personnel who work in F1 to recover. The summer break lasts from Monday July 29 after the Belgian Grand Prix until Friday 23 August, when practice for the Dutch Grand Prix begins. During this time all teams have to enact a “summer shutdown” of 14 consecutive days when they cannot work on design or production of the car, in short.

With such a long calendar there is also, mercifully, a slot of three weekends without a race between the Singapore Grand Prix on September 22 until the United States Grand Prix, which begins on October 18. That unofficial “autumn break” is the same length as the summer break and is perhaps understandable considering the season then ends with a run of one triple header (United States, Mexico, Brazil) followed by two weeks off and then another triple header (Las Vegas, Qatar, Abu Dhabi).

What are the driver line-ups?

The “same” 10 teams will be involved in the 2024 season although some have changed names for the new season. Alfa Romeo pulled out of their partnership (which began in 2019) with Sauber at the end of 2023, before the Swiss outfit becomes Audi in 2026. It is reported that no Audi branding will be seen on the car in 2024, with the team officially named Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber for 2024. I think we will just call them Sauber.

Meanwhile, AlphaTauri’s rebranding for 2024 has also been confirmed, their new name being Visa Cash App RB (yes, really). I think we will call them RB.

In any case, there is very little change to the driver line-ups next year with no changes from how the season finished in Abu Dhabi.

  • First Released May 28, 2024 released

F1 24 is too familiar in many areas, but an overhauled Driver Career mode and emphasis on aggressive racing ensure that Codemasters' latest is still an engaging motorsports experience.

The 2024 Formula One season is finally heating up. Max Verstappen will probably still win a fourth successive driver's championship after the final race in December, but at least the rest of the field is making life more taxing for the dominant Dutchman and his Red Bull team. Recent races have been more competitive and unpredictable, with multiple teams battling for first place in any given race weekend. It should be the perfect time for F1 24 to launch, but the same excitement generated by the real-life product doesn't quite apply to Codemaster's latest. It's still an excellent racing game, especially when you factor in an overhauled Driver Career mode, but its overt familiarity means there are fewer reasons than ever to upgrade if you own F1 23.

F1 24's most significant selling point is its new, reworked Driver Career mode. You can still play through this multi-season experience as a custom driver, but F1 24 now lets you strap into the helmet of one of the 20 superstar drivers on this season's grid. You may want to try and win Verstappen's fourth successive championship yourself or pick a younger driver like Yuki Tsunoda and earn your way onto one of the bigger teams in the sport. Not only this, but you can also opt to start as an F2 driver--beginning your career in either F2 or F1--and choose from a selection of legendary icons like Aryton Senna, Jacques Villeneuve, and errr… Pastor Maldonado. This isn't just a cosmetic change, either, because all previous stats and accolades carry over, including the number of successful podiums, race wins, championship victories, and so on. It's an enticing prospect being able to potentially win Michael Schumacher's record eighth world title or attempt to rebuild Williams back into a title contender with Senna behind the wheel.

Your driver's reputation within the sport will grow as you achieve top-10 finishes, complete contract targets, and tick off more accolades. This can help you secure a new deal with your current team or attract the attention of rival teams, who will then start vying for your services. If this happens, you can agree to attend a secret meeting and negotiate a move or turn down the offer, with the whole thing emulating the sort of behind-closed-doors nature of sudden driver moves that occur in real life. If you opt to stay with your current team, they'll be pleased with your decision. This is nonsensical considering the meeting was supposed to be secret, but these covert rendezvous are a nice new addition nonetheless.

Mid-race objectives don't work quite as well, despite being a solid idea on paper. The tasks you're given are somewhat contextual but still disregard crucial information to the point where they add little value. It makes sense for your race engineer to ask you to set faster lap times if you've recently fallen off the pace, but not when the reason you slowed down is because you pitted or were stuck behind the safety car for a few laps. Obviously my pace took a nosedive when I spent 25 seconds in the pits--that's how it works. Rather than adding impetus to specific phases of a race, most of these mid-race objectives are too arbitrary to ever be engaging. There isn't even a noticeable punishment for failing, which feels like an admission that this feature isn't quite ready yet.

What is ready are various enhancements to particular tracks that bring them in line with their real-life counterparts. Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, for instance, has undergone significant changes, notably around the course's iconic Eau Rogue/Radillion section, with an updated run-off area, a new grandstand, and trackside artwork. Silverstone has also been improved to enhance its accuracy, factoring in elevation changes and the track's bumps and grooves, while Lusail International and Jeddah Corniche have both undergone visual updates.

If you choose to play as a current F1 driver, one of the other new features you'll experience is the inclusion of authentic radio chatter. Each driver has a plethora of audio samples taken from actual F1 radio communication. However, the utilization of these sound bites is sadly limited. You'll hear a line or two after crossing the finish line--with elated moments from certain drivers now repurposed to fit podium finishes and race victories--and they'll express dismay after a session-ending crash. Each driver remains deathly silent the rest of the time, though, refusing to respond to the race engineer or react to any other minor collisions. Again, it's a solid idea for a feature, but one where the execution could be better.

It's a similar situation with the new Challenge Career mode, which offers a truncated and episodic version of the usual 24-race season. Here, you play as a predetermined driver and compete against other players asynchronously for leaderboard placement within a particular timeframe. The current event--which runs throughout June--focuses on Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, with the first episode tasking players with competing in races across Australia, China, and Miami.

It's an enticing prospect being able to potentially win Michael Schumacher's record eighth world title or attempt to rebuild Williams back into a title contender with Senna behind the wheel.

Though it's billed as a bite-sized mode, you still participate in a full practice session before one-shot qualifying and a short five-lap race. R&D upgrades also function the same way they do in the regular career mode, so you'll typically want to complete each practice objective to earn as many upgrade points as possible. This does also mean that upgrades can sometimes fail, putting you at a disadvantage against players with successful developments. You can replay an episode as often as you like to try and achieve a higher score and bypass these random failures, but that's a lot of time to dedicate to a mode where the rewards are a measly selection of bad-looking car liveries, helmet designs, and gloves.

The scoring system is also convoluted in how it rewards overtakes above all else. Currently, the best way to achieve a high score is by qualifying in first place and then replacing all of your engine parts to accrue a grid penalty. This puts you in last place to begin the race, where you can then work your way back up to P1 and attain as many points as possible. It's a backward way to play and the mode is too much of a time-sink to even act as a viable companion to the regular Driver Career mode.

In terms of F1 24's other offerings, My Team--where you play as a team boss, signing drivers and managing team finances--has remained identical to last year's game. Multiplayer is also much the same, aside from ranked races being reduced from 25% of a full race to only five laps' worth. F1 World is back as well, offering quick race events and a grind for car upgrades if you care about earning various cosmetics. I'm not particularly interested in unlocking an official Puma shirt to wear in a game where you spend 98% of the time looking at tarmac, so F1 World continues to feel like little more than a vehicle for microtransactions. The Drive to Survive-inspired Braking Point is also absent this year. Codemasters' take on a story mode has only appeared in every other F1 game since debuting in 2021, so the potential next installment won't arrive until at least F1 25.

With this scarcity of new modes, EA has been touting Dynamic Handling as F1 24's standout new feature. It's a complete overhaul of the game's handling model, aiming to produce a realistic experience by making myriad changes to things like suspension kinematics and tire models. Initially, however, these changes were met with a wave of negative feedback, especially since they felt superfluous in the face of F1 23's terrific handling model. Since then, a major patch has been released to address many of the problems the player-base had issues with, and the end result is mostly positive.

The front end of the car is still a tad too pointy, and curbs do almost nothing to dampen your speed, but at least the cars are now fun to whip around the track whether you're playing with a controller or wheel. There's a ton of downforce when taking fast corners that gives you an immense amount of grip, so there's a clear emphasis on driving aggressively and attacking certain sections of each track. This might make things a tad easier, and the cars are certainly more straightforward to tame this year, but it nails the feeling of being an accomplished F1 driver.

The same patch that addressed the game's handling also improved F1 24's on-track AI. Other drivers are now prone to making mistakes, locking up on corners, and occasionally crashing into each other. Mechanical problems will sometimes force them to retire, too, adding some unpredictability to a race when the safety car or a red flag is introduced. The AI still isn't without its problems, however. They tend to bunch up, creating long trains of five or six cars where no one can overtake or break away from the pack because everyone has DRS. Being stuck behind these groups is frustrating, especially when the AI's straight-line speed tends to dwarf yours, no matter the car.

F1 24 was riddled with other bugs at launch but has since improved by cleaning most of them up, yet one of the most egregious still remains. Sometimes, even amidst a torrential downpour, the game will refuse to let you use wet tires. The same is true for the AI, but they can still drive normally on slicks while you're left spinning in circles. Codemasters is aware of this issue, so hopefully it will be rectified soon, but up to this point, most wet races are simply unplayable.

There are still a few more kinks to iron out, then, but regardless of these issues, F1 24's on-track action remains robust and engaging. The overhauled Driver Career mode is also a net positive, even if some of its ideas don't quite come off, yet an enduring sense of deja vu is present elsewhere. This makes F1 24 difficult to recommend if you've played any of the most recent games in the series. There aren't enough new ideas here, and modes like F1 World continue to disappoint by focusing on cosmetics in a game where your avatar is rarely seen. F1 24 is a terrific game in isolation, and the new Driver Career mode will be enough for some players, but it feels like another game hampered by the demands of its annual release schedule.

  • Leave Blank
  • Reworked Driver Career mode adds authenticity by letting you play as real drivers
  • The new handling model promotes aggressive driving and is compelling with either a controller or wheel
  • Several tracks have been updated to reflect their real-life counterparts
  • Modes like Challenge Career and F1 World are underwhelming
  • AI drivers often bunch up in long trains where no one can overtake or break away
  • A bug prevents drivers from using wet tires
