REVIEW: What to expect aboard the six-star Scenic Eclipse

Latte gets a taste of next-level luxury on the world's first discovery yacht.

A number of years back Scenic introduced a new brand positioning, adopting the “nth degree”. Gone was the name Scenic Tours, replaced by Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, placing a greater emphasis on the Australian-owned company’s expanding cruise presence, beyond the rivers of Europe and into Southeast Asia. The “nth degree”, characterised by the degree icon (now used predominantly in Scenic’s branding) are centred around delivering the highest level in product, service, inclusion and value.

In Scenic’s words, “The Nth degree is all about perceiving our guests’ wishes, even before they know what they need themselves.”

The World’s First Discovery Yacht

Enter Scenic Eclipse , Scenic’s first foray into ocean cruising. Ultra-luxury ocean cruising.

I think th e Moroney’s would openly admit they’ve faced more than their fair share of choppy seas to bring Scenic Eclipse from concept to fruition. It’s been a seven year voyage from when Scenic Group Founder and Chairman Glen Moroney first conceptualised a cruise ship that offered all the comforts of a private, ultra luxury yacht for predominantly the affluent grey nomad market. Having already established a fleet of luxury river ships, the open water beckoned. An ocean vessel designed for discovery and equipped with not only the finest onboard facilities and among the largest suites at sea, but with a collection of enviable onboard ‘toys’ that guests have likely had on the wish list for years. The nth degree.

In October, LATTE was invited aboard the “World’s First Discovery Yacht” on an itinerary through the Caribbean. Joining a group of Australian and New Zealand travel advisors, we test-drove the six-star ship over a week long itinerary. We board Scenic Eclipse a few days into its scheduled 12-day “Taste of the Caribbean” itinerary in Port Antonio in Jamaica.

Port Antonio, Jamaica &copy Guy Dundas

Our shortened cruise visits Montego Bay, Guanaja Island in Honduras, Belize City and Half Moon Caye in Belize, Cozumel in Mexico, intersected by two full days at sea, before culminating in Miami, Florida. As LATTE exclusively revealed in July, it’s an itinerary Scenic needed to whip up after the Trump Administration threw a spanner in the works, blacklisting Americans from travelling to Cuba in June. Scenic chose to reroute its expedition to the island country as the bulk of passengers were American. That being the case, Scenic Eclipse is lucky to be half-filled of to its 228-passenger capacity.

Public spaces

Stepping onto the luxury yacht on Deck 4, the first thing guests will likely notice is that there’s no opulent atrium with a grand staircase. Instead we are directed to the Scenic Lounge: t he hub and primary gathering point where guests mingle. F lanked by reception at one end and an eye-catching marble bar at the other.

Scenic Lounge

eclipse yacht jamaica

With an ice-like backdrop, the mirrored shelving supports a collection of whiskeys (110 at last count, and growing) from around the globe. Glen Moroney boasts that the bar is one of the few features on the ship he designed. Wife, Karen, was the lead on all other interior decor and design elements. Karen is onboard measuring up an art installation in the ship’s main restaurant, Elements, while I’m onboard . Two months into service and on her first voyage of the Caribbean, Scenic Eclipse is continuing to have finishing touches applied and spaces refined. Another example is two sofas appear outside dining venues that weren’t there a few days before.

A Theatre stems off the Scenic Lounge and during our cruise it’s the venue for briefings by the Discovery Team on the day ahead, karaoke and dancing, and movie screenings.

A Boutique offers a range of clothing, including Scenic branded apparel, jewellery, watches, handbags, luggage, sunglasses and more. The store also has some cleverly hidden essentials that aren’t out on display, such as bathroom essentials, reef-safe suncreams, sea-bands, medicines, memory cards, etc.

Like the expanding whiskey selection in the Scenic Bar, the reading material in the Observation Lounge & Library continues to grow, and right about now I suspect the collection of books on Antarctica will be popular as Scenic Eclipse makes her inaugural sailing to the White Continent this week.

There’s seating for around 40 guests here on a mix of armchairs, lounges, stools and table & chairs. Most seats face outwards overlooking the teak deck. An elegant maroon coloured Swarovski telescope takes pride-of-place peering towards the horizon.

Observation Lounge & Library and Observation Deck

eclipse yacht jamaica

If you miss out on a seat, the lounge provides the only entry point to the large Observation Terrace over the bow. (As a side note, the sheer size of the deck does make it somewhat difficult to observe what’s ahead of the ship from the lounge.) The steep pitch of the ship’s hull does however makes it awkward to lean against the edge to observe the water and any marine or aquatic life below. However, as an all-suite balcony ship, guests can peer over the edge to their heart’s content from the confines of their own private space.

eclipse yacht jamaica

The Sun Terrace on Deck 10 has two heated whirlpools on the port and starboard sides, separated by sun lounges and other seating arrangements. While not offered on my cruise, I’m told guests will soon be able to order drinks and snacks from bar-staff delivered to them as they relax.

Scenic Eclips e’s primary pool is bizarrely located within the Yacht Club on Deck 7, home to the daily breakfast and lunch buffet. Above the pool are louvers, converting the indoor space into an outdoor-like experience. More a plunge pool than a true swimming pool, a strange seating arrangement sees sun lounges positioned alongside dining tables. Remembering this is a casual eating space, even more odd are indoor glass showers on each side of the ship to rinse off. It’s not surprising, I don’t see a single passenger using this pool, or showers, on our voyage. Though, once in arctic waters this facility is likely to be put to better use.

eclipse yacht jamaica

Outside the Yacht Club and at the stern is a Vitality Pool, which is essentially an arced plunge pool.

Immediately beneath the Vitality Pool on Deck 6 is the stupendous Senses Spa. Separate male and female spaces are located on either side of the ship, each featuring a Nordic inspired sauna, steam room, temperature controlled plunge pool, infrared room, relaxation lounge with stunning mosaic embedded tiles and its own outdoor vitality pool, also at the stern.

eclipse yacht jamaica

Spa Suite #806 is my decedent floating palace for a week. At up to 50-square-metres in size, the living space is sectioned into three compartments, separated by sheer curtains. An enormous walk-in has plenty of hanging space, bench-tops, draws, a safe and handy slide-out shoe shelf. I struggle to fill a third of the space available. A floor-to-ceiling mirror divides the walk-in from the king-sized bed.

Both sides of the Scenic Slumber Bed are individually adjustable in a multitude of settings and firmnesses, and the mattress can be flipped for even more comfort settings. There’s an accompanying pillow menu, and combined with the ultra plush duvet and sheet-set, ensuring a deep sleep on the sea, and living up to the branded name. The base of the bed also has a handy storage compartment for large suitcase.

A sheer curtain that can be easily pulled back separates the bed from the lounge room.  On the wall behind a corner lounge is a magnificent original artwork by Byron Bay artist, Mitch Gobel, that reflects the colours and movement of the ocean outside. There’s also a comfy armchair in the corner. In a simple twist, the large round coffee table cleverly adjusts to a suitable working station (from where I’m able to produce two issues of LATTE !). A huge rotatable Samsung TV stands on a pedestal and provides a direct feed to The Theatre and a catalogue of TV networks from around the world and endless movie selection.

My huge balcony has a chaise, arm-chair and side-table. In hindsight I don’t fully utilise this space as much as I could have, and that’s probably due to the humidity in the Caribbean where I’m cruising. I can imagine guests will be perched in this space, perhaps with new friends, ordering champagne and canapes from their butler as they observe penguins frolicking on ice flows in the Arctics.

eclipse yacht jamaica

The living space also features a mini-bar complete with a retro-style i perEspresso coffee machine and mini-bar fridge with soft drinks and juices. But there’s no pre-stocked alcohol. The idea being for guests to head to one of the bars onboard and socialise over beverages.

My expansive marble bathroom is however the drawcard of the Spa Suite. The steam shower is equipped with an oversized head and “light therapy” which slowly transitions between all the colours of the rainbow. A bench seat stretches the width of the shower. It’ll be a handy feature for mature travellers but the drawback is that it pools water, which if not wiped down, drips during the night. There’s a stylish stretched double vanity and plenty of additional shelving space separating it from the pièce de résistance – the double size Philippe Starck bath. The whirlpool bath faces the balcony window and is a sanctuary unto itself to route out the day.

The bathroom and living space are separated by a glass divider which doesn’t quite reach the roof. Using a “electro-chromic” technology, the glass frosts for privacy at the flick of a switch.

A toilet is located in a standalone room next door to the bathroom, and I’m not the only one in the famil who finds the full-length mirror mounted to the back of the door a little peculiar.

Scenic Eclipse has an  all-suite balcony design. Each of the 114 suites are located in the front half of the upper five decks of the 10-level yacht. There are 12 Spa Suites on the ship, which are positioned on Decks 8 and 9. If your clients are after something even more extravagant and spacious, try the Panorama Suite (110-square-metres), Grand Panorama Suite (105-square-metres), Owner’s Penthouse Suite (195-square-metres) or the Two-bedroom Penthouse Suite (a whopping 245-square-metres).

The culinary experience

German TV Top Chef runner-up Tom Goetter leads the yacht’s culinary scene. Moroney tasked the 31 year old to create innovative dishes and menus, equipping the gastronomic genius with some of the best gear in the game, the latest innovation being an Urban Cultivator: a self-contained incubator that grows herbs and greens onboard the ship wherever she travels.

Goetter is a passionate and exuberant chef who served his time in a range of high-brow restaurants on the land, perfecting his craft, before finding his home on the sea working with Tui Cruises, before downsizing to Seabourn, and now Scenic Eclipse .

The yacht has five restaurants: Elements, Koko’s, Lumière , Azure Bar & Grill and the Yacht Club. Koko’s however is a three-in-one offering, with an Asian Fusion experience at its core and a sushi bar (Sushi & Koko’s) positioned upon entering the restaurant; and a Teppanyaki grill located in a private room towards the rear. Likewise, Element’s has an easily missed Chef’s Table private dining room. A cooking school, Scenic Epicure, is also classed as on the Scenic Eclipse’s dining experiences, so to is room-service.

Elements (on Deck 4) is the main and largest restaurant on Scenic Eclipse and offers Italian, steak and seafood. While I’m onboard, Karen Moroney is installing a new art gallery, with a collection of around a dozen pieces (more information on this exhibit is yet to be released). The Lasagna Bolognese with black Angus and organic tomatoes is delicious.

Next door to Elements is Koko’s where chef Goetter has his own take on the Japanese bento box at lunch. For dinner I join five members of the group and we are provided share a medley of the main courses, Cantonese Steamed Fish, Chingri Malay Curry, Angus Beef Pad Thai and Pekin Duck – all amazingly presented and tasty. Another night we experience the Teppanyaki Grill, but it’s a civilised affair, with no food throwing.

Upstairs on Deck 5 at the sophisticated fine-dining contemporary French venue, Lumière , guests pick their way through an eight-course menu, which includes ‘Rockerfeller’ oysters (comte bechamel, sauteed spinach, brioche and persillade brioche crumble) and Chateaubriant D’ Angus Noir, Foir Gras et Gratin (350 days grass fed Black Angus on potatoe gratin).

Casual dining options are available at the Yacht Club and Azure Bar & Cafe. And if you don’t care to leave the confines of your suite, In-Suite Dining is offered 24 hours a day. The succulent medium rare Australian lamb cutlets are a winner.

Tucked away is a private dining space where VIPs are invited to dine is the Chef’s Table. Here Goetter’s imagination runs wild, with dishes reminiscent of what you would expect from Heston Blumenthal, such as cigar-shaped burritos resting on dehydrated vegetables that resemble “ash”. Goetter also shares secrets of his craft in the culinary school, Epicure.

ECLIPSE Yacht – Epic $600M Superyacht

The ECLIPSE yacht was once the largest yacht in the world at an impressive length of 162.5 metres (533 ft) but currently ranks in second place after AZZAM.

Though she is known as the billion-dollar yacht, it is estimated that her true value lies between US $500 – $700 million.

The vessel can host 36 guests and is even rumored to feature a state-of-the-art anti-paparazzi system to protect the privacy of those on board.

Eclipse yacht SV

ECLIPSE yacht interior

The interior (and the exterior) was designed by Terence Disdale , who has become one of the top names in the industry despite having no formal design education.

ECLIPSE was his largest project to date, and he also worked on prominent vessels such as A+ and AL SALAMAH. The interior of ECLIPSE is classically designed in a style that is to be expected from one of the largest yachts in the world.

The upholstery and furniture follow a beige and crème color palette with wooden accents.

The yacht’s 18 cabins can welcome 36 guests as well as 70 crew members, which is an unusually large number even for a vessel of this size.

A large dance floor, several fireplaces, two swimming pools, and two helipads are also included onboard.

The ECLIPSE yacht interior is so large that there is even a cinema dedicated exclusively to crew members. In 2015 the interior of ECLIPSE was refitted by Blohm and Voss in Hamburg.

Specifications

The ECLIPSE yacht is the second-largest yacht in the world with a length of 162.5 meters (533 ft), a beam of 22 meters (72.2 ft), and a draft of 5.9 meters (19.4 ft).

She was built by the German shipyard Blohm & Voss and delivered to her owner in 2010.

Four MTU engines power ECLIPSE and allow her to reach top speeds of 25 knots, although her average cruising speed lies at 22 knots.

Her total volume lies at 13564 tons making her not only one of the longest but also the heaviest yachts in the world.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Eclipse-yacht-FV1-1024x1024.jpg

Like the interior of ECLIPSE, the interior was designed by Terence Disdale. According to rumors, Abramovich fitted her with an anti-paparazzi system that detects electronic light sensors from digital cameras.

However, there is no proof of this, although many newspapers report its existence.

On deck are several swimming pools and jacuzzis, and the aft of the vessel features a sizeable beach club. The yacht has a sleek design that attests to Terence Disdale’s classical style.

Eclipse tender FV

ECLIPSE came to fame as being the most expensive yacht ever built at the time for an approximate price of US $500 million.

She has seen further improvements since her purchase by Abramovich in 2010 and it is often widely reported that she is worth US $1.2 – $1.5 billion.

Scenic Eclipse Cruise Destinations

Scenic Eclipse offers an array of destinations to choose from. In the Arctic you may spot polar bears, arctic foxes and many types of seal. Antarctica is a very popular destination for its icebergs and penguins.

For a more tropical experience, Scenic Eclipse also offers cruises to the Caribbean, Western Europe and Japan. There are plenty of options for shore activities on these cruises as well, from snorkeling to hiking and cultural encounters.

Take advantage of the all-inclusive shore excursions to visit historic cities in South America such as Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro as well as archaeological sites like Machu Picchu in Peru. Enjoy fun activities in the Caribbean, such as swimming with stingrays on Grand Cayman .

During our Central America cruise, we were fortunate to visit Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Costa Rica. The joy of Scenic Eclipse is her flexibility. If the weather is bad in one region, the captain may decide to circumvent that area and to spend more time in sunnier climes!

At 551 feet, Scenic Eclipse is a comparatively small ship compared to other cruise lines. Thanks to this, she can dock where larger cruise ships cannot. Moreover, GPS Dynamic Positioning , customized oversized stabilizers, a Polar Class 6 rating and a strengthened hull make journeys on board Scenic Eclipse extremely smooth.

There are 114 suites on board Scenic Eclipse, which can accommodate up to 228 guests (up to 200 in the polar regions). They vary in size, but each have their own private verandah. The two Owner’s Suites are the most luxurious cruise suites on Scenic Eclipse.

Scenic Eclipse Amenities

The Scenic Eclipse is truly in a class of its own. Featuring 10 decks, this ship was designed for luxury and exploration. Guests can enjoy world-class cuisine, complimentary Wi-Fi, 6-star accommodation, and incredible views from anywhere on the ship.

Senses Spa on Deck 6 boasts a lovely outdoor terrace with a Spa Vitality Pool and sunbeds. Inside, there are women’s and men’s plunge pools, steam rooms, saunas and relaxation lounges. A manicure and pedicure area, together with a hair salon completes the grooming experience.

We particularly like the infrared chairs and the chromo-therapy showers. Make sure to book a massage with one of the expert therapists, specializing in ESPA treatments – so revitalizing!

Up on Deck 10, the Panorama Bar outdoor terraces are a great spot for enjoying the sunset, while the Cabanas provide welcome shade when it’s hot. Soak in one of the two Vitality Pools and admire the sea views, or relax in the Hanging Chairs on Deck 7.

Scenic Eclipse Cabanas on Deck 10

PURE: Yoga & Pilates Studio is a calm space with sea views on Deck 6 where you can enjoy group classes or book private sessions for an additional cost. The POWER: GYM opposite is well equipped, with several running machines, free weights and more sea views.

You can get some of the best views from the Observation Lounge and Library and the Observation Terrace on Deck 5. At the other end of the ship, Scenic Épicure is a cooking school which also boasts an aquaponic herb growing system.

One of the amenities on Scenic Eclipse that we found very handy is the Guest Laundry room on Deck 3. There are several washing machines and tumble driers, preloaded with detergent, as well as a steamer and iron. On this deck you will also find the Medical Centre , Discovery Centre and Marina Entrances .

Scenic Eclipse Excursions

One of the highlights of the Scenic Eclipse experience is the opportunity to take part in exclusive excursions . These complimentary activities are designed to give guests a unique and intimate look at the places they visit.

From guided tours of ancient monuments and UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Antigua City in Guatemala to Zodiac rides to deserted beaches, Scenic Eclipse excursions offer something for everyone. And with a staff of expert guides, you can be sure that you’ll get the most out of your trip.

Helicopter excursions and submarine excursions on board Scenic Neptune are available in certain destinations for an additional cost. There are two Scenic Eclipse Airbus helicopters, with wrap-around windows and extremely low sound levels.

We highly recommend booking a submarine ride, as the custom-designed vessel enables optimal underwater viewing. Depending on your destination, you may spot a variety of marine life such as turtles and exotic fish.

Traditional dancers in El Salvador

Scenic Eclipse Entertainment

Whether you’re a fan of trivia quizzes, wine tastings, lectures from the expert Discovery Team or musical theatre, you’ll find something to enjoy. We took part in quite a few different activities, such as wildlife spotting, a fun scavenger hunt, pilates classes, nature talks and listening to live music.

There’s often a pianist playing in the Scenic Lounge Bar, and on one occasion, a Mexican mariachi band came on board – great fun! One of the best parts of the trip was chatting with other guests – as this is a smaller ship it is easy to get to know people well.

What is the Scenic Eclipse Dress Code?

During the day, passengers are encouraged to dress in smart casual attire , with shorts and jeans being perfectly acceptable. However, swimwear should only be worn around the pool deck.

In the evening, the dress code is elegant casual, with men wearing collared shirts and long pants, and women typically wearing dresses, skirts or trousers with a blouse or sweater. There is no strict enforcement of the dress code and there are no formal evenings, however passengers are asked to be respectful of other guests.

For the polar regions, Scenic provides you with a complimentary polar parka which is yours to keep after the cruise. They will also loan you polar boots for the duration of the cruise. It’s important to pack your own waterproof trousers.

Eclipse – The World’s Most Expensive Private Yacht

Eclipse mega yacht

In the world of soccer, Roman Abramovich is a popular figure as he owns the leading English club, Chelsea. The Russian businessman helped the Blues become a big spender in the transfer market, bringing brilliant players like Arjen Robben, Didier Drogba, Fernando Torres, etc. to offer the beautiful game to club supporters across the world.

In addition to the Chelsea football team, which is a beauty on soccer fields, Abramovich owns another marvel: a private yacht named Eclipse.

The 162.5m-long beauty Eclipse is the world’s second-largest and one of the most expensive superyachts. Its estimated cost is 590 million (€340 million), and its current owner has owned it since December 2010.

A synonym for luxury, this superyacht is best suited for all adventure and water sports activities and provides splendid trips to cultural and historical destinations.

Built by renowned German shipbuilder Blohm + Voss, the Eclipse was launched in June 2009 after five years of design, development, and testing. Before its final delivery, several sea trials were conducted starting in May 2009 at Kristiansand, Norway.

When delivered, Eclipse won the spot for the largest superyacht in the world, beating the 162m-long M/Y Dubai of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates. Eclipse retained the title until the arrival of the 180m-long Azzam, UAE President Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s private yacht in 2013. Currently managed by Blue Ocean Yacht Management, Eclipse was selected as the Motor Yacht of the Year in 2011 at the World Superyacht Awards.

Specifications of Eclipse Yacht

As mentioned earlier, this tremendous superyacht measures 162.5m (533’1″ft) in length, 22.00m (72’2″ft) in width and 5.90m (19’4″ft) in the draft, offering a vast area for luxurious leisure activities. The Bermuda-flagged Lloyds Register class yacht has a Gross Tonnage of 13000 tonnes.

Eclipse is powered by a diesel-electric, dual propulsion system with four MTU 20V 1163 TB93 marine diesel engines, offering the latest propulsion technology for maximum speed performance. These engines power the rotating Azipod drives, giving the yacht a maximum speed of 25 knots and a cruise speed of 22. Featuring 1,000,000 litres of fuel tanks, Eclipse can travel up to 6,000 nautical miles at 21 knots before refuelling. The boat also can store about 150,000 litres of freshwater abroad.

Interior and Exterior Design

While Blohm + Voss provided the naval architecture, Terence Disdale Design carried out the superstructure design of the Eclipse. The UK-based award-winning firm was also responsible for interior design, deck layouts, and construction supervision.

Incidentally, the vessel’s construction was performed with great secrecy, and due to this reason, the project was named Project Luxury Yacht M 147 throughout the construction period. However, the details of the technical design and construction of the yacht have not been revealed to the public; the design and layout are available for people to marvel at.

Divided into nine decks, the top deck of Eclipse is taken up by the helicopters and garage. The swimming pool and sundeck go on level eight, while level seven features a pool, atrium and an open deck. The salon, main dining hall and a 40ft X 60ft full-beam loggia are located on the sixth level, and the fourth floor features the main entrance of the yacht. While the next level of the yacht divides the cabins and suites of the owner, guests and crew, the second deck of the vessel acts as a docking port for the submarine. Level one accommodates the engine room, machinery, and a small disco club.

The superyacht with a displacement steel hull has an aluminium superstructure, while its decks become magnificent, featuring teak woods. To offer a smooth cruising experience, the yacht features an ultra-modern stabilization system that minimises the roll motion effect and is equipped with ‘at anchor stabilisers’ to increase comfort when the boat is stationary. Featuring the Art Deco interior design, with an innovative, technology-rich environment and the use of soft metallic fabrics, Eclipse offers a splendid living experience for its owner. With diverse facilities across the decks, the yacht meets the optimum standard of offering a leisure time platform.

The entire yacht has been bejewelled with features to make it more luxurious. Spread across many decks, Eclipse facilities abroad include a gym, dance floor, underwater lights, beach club, wifi connection, beauty salon, tender, garage, deck jacuzzi, etc. Further, the Eclipse holds two helipads and a 16 m swimming pool that can be converted into a dance floor. This motor yacht can accommodate three helicopters, two on both helipads and the third one in a storage hangar below the foredeck. Moreover, Eclipse also flaunts internal lifts, six tenders and an exterior fireplace on-board. The boat also features a place for a three-person private submarine that can go up to a depth of 160ft.

Eclipse is also one of the most technologically advanced yachts around the world.  The boat boasts the latest technology safety features, including motion sensors, bulletproof glass and antiballistic missile defence.  In fact, each cabin in the yacht comes with a private 6ft home cinema screen, a Jacuzzi, a spa and specialized security systems. According to reports, Eclipse has an anti-paparazzi system that detects the use of digital cameras to click photographs of the boat. Using lasers, the system detects digital cameras and disrupts a potential picture of the yacht, as those infrared lights can make it unstable.

Accommodation

The yacht has 11 staterooms and suites, totalling 6000 square feet. With this facility, Eclipse can house 30 guests and a 92-member staff crew abroad. The master suite, located on level five of the yacht, is 5000 square feet alone. In addition, the boat also has a pilothouse on level seven.

With all these facilities incorporated, maintaining the Eclipse is not a less expensive matter. An annual expense of over $60 million is reportedly required to maintain this luxury boat. According to media reports, Abramovich charges its customers around £ 175,000 to rent the vessel for a day.

Luxurious mega yacht Scenic Eclipse docks in Jamaica

eclipse yacht jamaica

The much heralded deluxe all-inclusive Australian-owned cruise liner was finally commissioned in August of this year, setting sail to several popular tourist destinations around the world.

Of course the beautiful island of Jamaica is a must – even though its primary globetrotting expeditions place special emphasis on polar cruising –  with all 55 passengers and 185 crew on board getting a taste of Portland Saturday morning before docking at Montego Bay, the island’s second of two cities and tourism mecca.

Scenic Eclipse is an all-suite 228-passenger cruise ship that carries notable features such as two Airbus H130 helipads, a fleet of zodiacs or large capacity inflatable boats, e-bikes, kayaks and a submarine, capable of carrying a maximum of seven persons, among others.

With Jamaica’s ever-expanding tourism market eclipsing their target every year, the visit of the Scenic Eclipse is sure to make Brand Jamaica soar even higher.

Special thanks to Delano Seiveright, senior advisor and strategist at the Ministry of Tourism, for the images.

Cast your vote in the inaugural World Cup of Superyachts

Eclipse crowned the winner of the first World Cup of Superyachts

After a gruelling week of competition and over 47,000 votes cast, the 162 metre Blohm+Voss superyacht Eclipse has been crowned the winner of the inaugural World Cup of Superyachts.

The competition began with 16 of the greatest yachts drawn from a hat and the number was swiftly whittled down to a face-off in the grand final between Eclipse and Octopus - two of the most impressive yachts ever built.

  • Step on board the 162.5m Eclipse - the second largest superyacht in the world

At 162 metres in length, Eclipse had size on her side as one of the largest yachts in the world (second only to Azzam who she knocked out in the semi-finals). With nine decks and the design talents of the legendary Terence Disdale touching every curve and corner, she is a truly remarkable vessel. But what Octopus may lack in size at a comparably modest 126 metres, she more than makes up for in her pandora's box of toys, from the two helicopters sitting side by side in the hangar to the 10-person Pagoo submarine (not to mention her globetrotting 12,500 nautical mile range.)

The competition was tough and the battle well fought, but it was Eclipse that came out on top after a week of voting across social media and boatinternational.com.

Video: World’s Largest Charter Yacht ECLIPSE Filmed By Drone

By Oliver Pearson   26 May 2016

Available for highly exclusive charter vacations, the 163m/533ft motor yacht ECLIPSE was filmed by an aerial drone as she was sat at anchor in the French Riviera earlier this month.

A famously private vessel, ECLIPSE has always been the preserve of a select few, with only a handful of images suggesting the kind of magic the British designer Terence Disdale has worked on her interior.

Built by the innovative German shipyard Blohm + Voss back in 2010, she was unsurprisingly named ‘Best Displacement Motor Yacht Of 3,000GT and Above’ as well as being the joint winner of the prestigious ‘Motor Yacht of the Year’ award at the World Superyacht Awards 2011.

With so much eminence and mystery surrounding her, it’s little wonder that she has generated an almost unprecedented curiosity amongst both industry players and charterers.

It was therefore to great excitement that the ‘French Riviera Water Toys’ company uploaded extensive drone footage of her as she joined the proceedings in Cannes earlier this month.

Indeed, the shrewd viewer will be able to discern the figures of both the 126m/414ft motor yacht OCTOPUS as well as the 84m/274ft superyacht SAVANNAH just a short distance away.

M/Y ECLIPSE at anchor in the Mediterranean

With so much to take in, the video of superyacht ECLIPSE is an all but inexhaustible resource

Offering a full panorama of motor yacht ECLIPSE as she dazzles in the Mediterranean sun, the footage begins by offering a profile of her starboard side before moving towards the fore and returning down her port side.

From here, the drone travels a little closer to the stern where the more eagle-eyed viewers will be able to catch a glimpse of her beach club.

In this way, not only are we treated to detailed views of her harmonious exterior lines, but also of her two helipads, tender garages, swim platform, and the various outdoor spaces spread across her various decks.

Obviously, with so much to take in, the video is an all but inexhaustible resource.

Eclipse at Half Moon, Jamaica’s Stunning New Luxury Resort

It doesn’t happen overnight. It doesn’t grow in a week. It can take years. It can take decades.

Or, in the case of the legendary Half Moon in Montego Bay, Jamaica — it can nearly three quarters of a century.

Since its beginnings in the early 1950s, Half Moon has been one of the Caribbean’s grandest, most glamorous, most charming places to stay.

So when Half Moon debuted its new Eclipse resort right before the onset of the pandemic, just before the tumult of 2020 began, that was the biggest question.

Would it still have that indescribable ambience that once drew the likes of JFK and Queen Elizabeth II?

Would a brand-new resort still feel like Half Moon?

The answer is a resounding yes. And more.

jamaica luxury resort half moon

This is Eclipse, the stunning, superlative new centerpiece of the resort, a modern property for the contemporary luxury traveler that expertly shapes its grandeur and pedigree of one of the Caribbean’s most legendary places to stay into a fresh, hip, buzzy property.

eclipse yacht jamaica

The 57-room resort is set around two main anchors: the grand, modern Great House; and a spectacular beachfront infinity-edge pool that is in many ways the “town square” of the resort, the epicenter, the place to see and be seen.

The rooms are plush, comfortable and sleek, marrying classic charm with modern convenience.

The food and beverage program is excellent — whether you’re eating superb fish and chips with a side of Appleton 12 at the edge of the pool or taking in an evening at the enchanting Sugar Mill.

And the beauty is, you get all of the resort’s amenities and space – that means you can take your bike and find a corner of the resort just for you, whether it’s the quiet sands of the West Cottages or the lush serenity of the Hibiscus Pool.

Or you can play 18 at the property’s eponymous Robert Trent Jones, Sr-designed golf course, dubbed the “Caribbean Augusta.”

Eclipse is the Half Moon for the 21st century — and it’s a reminder, a message, a bold statement: great hospitality is timeless.

After nearly 70 years, something new has come to the front of Half Moon.

And it’s a very welcome Eclipse.
