BORKUMRIFF IV is for sale

Published 20 November 2020

The 50.6m (166ft) BORKUMRIFF IV is an auxiliary sailing schooner delivered by Dutch sailing superyacht specialists Royal Huisman in 2002. This much loved family yacht, still under her original ownership, has been unstintingly maintained and continually upgraded by professionals. Today she presents in outstanding condition.

She is an outstandingly pretty yacht

The sweeping sheerline of her sleek, Lloyd's compliant aluminium hull and traditional deck design are by the American yacht designer John G Alden, famed for his fast, sea-kindly and graceful designs, with performance optimisation and naval architecture by Gerald Dijkstra. British designer John Munford styled her classic interior with exquisite mahogany panelling to evoke the golden age of gentleman's yachting.

Traditional deck design with Rondal deck gear

She has been fitted out without compromise with internal ballast of stacked and poured lead in her long keel, masts, carbon fibre V-booms, furlers, powered winches and deck gear by Rondal, new rod rigging by Nitronic in 2019, navigational electronics by Furuno and high-tech sails by big name lofts such as Incidences, North and Doyle.

Tenders are stowed on the midships sidedecks

Her 9.2m (30.2ft) beam and 254GT volume give her huge swathes of versatile teak deck space, the midships sidedeck sections of which are home to her beautiful 5.5m Walstad Baadewerff motor launch and 4.3m Novurania Deluxe tender.

The guest cockpit aft of the main deck house

The focus of the guest spaces is the cockpit aft of the main deck house and forward of the helm, with U shaped seating port and starboard for open air dining and relaxing.

Looking starboard aft in the main deck house

The aft deck house with entry fore and aft provides lounge seating and the main deck house has a dining table to starboard, seating and a desk.

Looking to starboard from the saloon into the dining room

Steps from the main deck house lead down to a dayhead and on to the main saloon with formal dining to port and a lounge and entertainment area to starboard.

Twin berths to starboard in the owner's suite

She welcomes up to six guests in three cabins. The full beam owner's suite aft has twin berths, en suite and a lounge area and forward are two twin berths, both en suite and mirrors of each other in layout.

Her easily managed sail plan and sleek hull deliver sparkling performance

In common with all Alden designs, her sail plan is easily managed by a shorthanded crew but she can also pick up her skirts and fly at speeds into the high teens with a full crew in a regatta. When becalmed her 1,057hp MTU diesel engine gives her a top speed of 12.5 knots and a range of 3,200nm at her cruising speed of 10 knots.

We are delighted to welcome this outstanding modern sailing classic to our sales fleet asking EUR 14,900,000, with EU VAT paid. We would be delighted to furnish interested clients with full details and arrange a private inspection, either virtually or in person, at her berth in Antibes.

Royal Huisman 164 Borkumriff IV

  • By Yachting Staff
  • Updated: October 4, 2007

Borkumriff IV is a 164-foot schooner Royal Huisman Shipyard completed this spring for a repeat client, a genteel European whose visit to the Dutch yard happened to coincide with mine last year. It is a rare pleasure to see such a yacht under construction and talk with her owner about his dreams for her. His earlier Huisman yacht, Borkumriff III, was completed in 1994. The latest rendition is Royal Huisman’s largest delivery to date, but will be eclipsed next year by the 292-foot Athena.

Designed by John G. Alden and Gerard Dijkstra & Partners, Borkumriff IV reaches back to 19th century New England commercial schooners for her inspiration. Her interior, by John Munford, complements the classic lines of her sheer and deckhouses. Finished in teak and lightly stained raised panel mahogany, the yacht’s belowdecks spaces are softened by white overheads and lots of natural light.

All joinerwork is completed on-site in a new Huisman furniture factory that is a model of efficiency and safety. This facility was a pet project of Wolter Huisman, patriarch of the family-run company. He beamed with pride as he ushered me through. All work stations are fully adjustable, ensuring carpenters can position their work at an optimum height and angle. Not only does this reduce worker stress and injury, but it yields a better product. A large vacuum system keeps the air clean and free of dust. Joinery components, once fabricated, are assembled in on-deck subassemblies and are available for client perusal before being moved into the yacht’s hull.

Borkumriff IV is well equipped for extensive and challenging offshore cruising. This is understandable, given the owner’s love of sailing. He races a 1938 Alden cutter in classic yachting events, but wanted something a bit larger, more comfortable and more capable for personal use. For Borkumriff IV , Royal Huisman turned to sister company Rondal to fabricate the 166-foot Alustar aluminum tapered plate masts.

Rondal also supplied carbon-fiber “Park Avenue main booms, the carbon-fiber gaff and staysail boom, and the many winches that dot the teak deck and varnished cabin tops. In addition, Rondal provided carbon-fiber davits to handle the custom Walsted captain’s gig and the RIB that are on deck amidships.

The schooner is fitted with two deckhouses, the forward serving as an upper saloon and navigation area, the after an on-deck crew lounge adjacent to the two after crew cabins. Between the two houses, Borkumriff IV carries a pair of open cockpits, the forward for guest relaxation, the after for steering and sail management.

Belowdecks, Borkumriff IV has a full-beam saloon amidships, the starboard half of which can convert to a private den by closing a pair of pocket doors. Abaft the saloon, the owner’s suite includes twin berths and an office/sitting room. Forward of the saloon are two guest cabins, each with twin berths. The forward third of the yacht includes the galley, crew mess, captain’s cabin and four crew cabins.

Borkumriff’s owner will certainly sail when the winds allow, but can motor when necessary. An MTU 12V 2000 diesel will supply 1,072 hp for propulsion, and a tunnel thruster at the bow will assist docking and close-quarter maneuvering. -D.D.

Borkumriff IV

As Wolter Huisman would reflect, "Repeat orders are good for the yard and the customer". The 'camaraderie' and enjoyment of building Borkumriff III with the owner could be rekindled, resulting in an even closer working relationship. The owner, an experienced European yachtsman (who incidentally raced a 1938 Alden cutter in classic yacht racing events) wanted a larger yacht with the Alden touch of magic and, typically for such a considerate owner, wanted to give the crew much larger quarters - no less than seven private cabins with showers and heads per two crew members.

For the interior John Munford selected a combination of teak and lightly stained raised panel Mahogany to enrich the feeling of comfort and easiness when moving through her voluminous accommodations. Large glass rimmed skylights pour sun light over interior spaces whilst soft pile carpeting gives Old World warmth underfoot. On deck her custom array of Rondal deck hardware is set against an expanse of varnished teak cabin tops, skylights and deck boxes.

The schooner rig comes complete with traditional topsail and fisherman carefully sheeted for modern performance expectations, able to tack even without the need to handle a topsail. Before moving below decks it is important to consider the deck layout, sail handling systems and spars. Her Rondal aluminum plate masts in 'Alustar' have a length of 50.0m/166ft and carry Rondal carbon fiber booms and gaffs, which tower over what feels like acres of teak deck planking. A beautiful Walsted custom-built ‘gig’ to usher guests ashore sits neatly beneath carbon fiber davits for rapid and simple deployment. Defying her traditional look Borkumriff IV is fully equipped for extensive offshore cruising.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

borkum riff iv yacht

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.
