History of St. Lucia

St. Lucia was first inhabited by the Caribs, an indigenous  tribal people who controlled much of the Caribbean islands. However,  French and English settlers arrived in the 1660s, and fought over  ownership of the land for several decades. France and England fought  over most of the Caribbean until the Treaty of Paris. St. Lucia switched  rulers over fourteen times before 1814, and is sometimes called the  "Helen of the West Indies" after the famous Helen of Troy. While Britain  gained final control of St. Lucia, the French were the ones to name it.  Saint Lucia was chosen to honor Saint Lucy of Syracuse, and is the only  country in the world to be named after a woman.

The island was solely British territory until the late 1950s, when it  became a part of the Federation of the West Indies. This Federation  allowed European countries to maintain control of their territories, yet  gave some freedom over internal affairs to the states. However, St.  Lucia fought for sovereignty and in 1979 received it. Saint Lucia is now  an independent state, and a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.  Though it gained independence from the European countries, St. Lucia  still carries much of the history and culture from its ancestors. From  the first Caribs to the settling French and English, St. Lucia is a  wonderful blend of European sophistication with the island carefree  lifestyle.

Geography and Wildlife

St. Lucia was not always a luscious rainforest island with  wildlife and beautiful seascapes. Its origins come from volcanic  eruptions and continental shifts to form the craggy peaks and mountains  that shape the island’s inland. St. Lucia is significantly more rugged  than most of the islands, with its highest peak, Mount Gimie, reaching  over 950 metres (3,120 feet) above sea level. Two towering mountains, the Pitons, make a statement on the island’s  coastline. They sit between Soufrière and Choiseul on the western side,  and act as a landmark for sailors  to know they’ve arrived at St. Lucia.  However, these two peaks are not even the greatest sight in St. Lucia.  You’ll have to travel to the Sulphur Springs in Soufrière to see the  world’s only drive-in volcano. Culture and Local Attractions

St. Lucia is a wonderful melting pot of African, East Indian,  French, and English culture. Because of its long-lasting British rule,  the official language of St. Lucia is English. However, most of the  population also speak a Saint Lucian-specific French Creole, known  locally as Patois, or"Patwa." Much of the music and literature from St.  Lucia natives is written in the Antillean Creole language. Music and dance are an integral part of the St. Lucian culture. A Brief Taste of Adventure

Half day cruise.

The Half-Day Cruise comprises a four-hour sail, out into the Caribbean, filled with memories to keep forever. You will experience dodging into secluded hurricane holes, taking in the spectacular coastline and stopping to play with the multi-coloured marine life equipped with mask and snorkel. Or instead, why not devise your own story.

Half-Day Cruise – $800 USD for up to four guests .

  Additional guests are priced at $80 USD pp or $40 USD for each child (12 years old or less. Infants free).

Your half-day cruise includes snacks, water, soft drinks, juices, rum punch, rum with mixers and beers.  We cast off from The Landings at either 8.30 am returning at 12.30 pm, or at 12.30 pm returning at 4.30 pm. Both options provide a comfortable two-hour sail to the bay of Anse Cochon, part of the National Marine Reserve, to enjoy one of the best snorkelling areas in St Lucia. On our return, we’ll visit Marigot Bay, possibly the most beautiful bay in the Caribbean, and steeped in history. It was the location for the movie “Dr Doolittle”.

Please note this cruise does not have time to get to the “Pitons” that’s a three-hour sail each way and requires a full day cruise.

Only Limited by your Imagination

Full-day cruise.

A full-day cruise is, we think, the best way to see the island. With the time you have, it’s possible to sail all the way to the Pitons. Along the way you’ll marvel at the stunning coastline and look out for playful dolphins racing in our wake ad providing a free acrobatic display. The St Lucian waters are also home to pilot whales and if we are lucky we might occasionally sight a humpback whale.

Anchored between the majestic Petit and Gros Piton peaks (a World Heritage Site) you can swim and snorkel before a bite to eat.

For lunch you have the choice of a few hotel restaurants on the beach (Anse Chastenet or Sugar Beach). There is also the option of a tasty cold lunch aboard Southern Breeze ordered prior to the cruise. Choices include fresh salads with either, fish, chicken, or beef and delicious wraps, baguettes and much more.

At Anse Cochon, en route to Landings, there’s more reef snorkelling taking in shoals of brightly coloured tropical fish to cap off a brilliant day with family and/or friends.

Full Day Cruise – $1400 USD for up to six guests 

Additional guests are priced at $100 USD pp or $50 USD for each child. (12 years old or less).

The cruise includes fresh fruit, snacks, water, soft drinks, juices, rum punch, rum and mixers, and beers.

Lunch and wine onboard will be quoted separately.

The full-day cruise departs from The Landings at 8.30 am and returns at approx 4.30 pm. Our normal itinerary would be a west coast sail down to the Pitons (about 3 hours), stopping for a swim and snorkel followed by lunch aboard or onshore (your choice), and on the return, we also nose into Marigot Bay, described by American novelist, James A. Michener, as “the Most Beautiful Bay in The Caribbean” which is steeped in history.

There are some add on tours in Soufriere, such as a visit to the Botanical Gardens and Diamond Falls OR to explore the Drive In Volcano with its beneficial sulphur springs. These include lunch ashore and can be added at US$50 pp.

Party Group or Romantic Twosome?

The sunset cruise.

There are two ways of looking at a Sunset Cruise. It can either be a small group of family and/or friends enjoying a fun time watching the sun go down assisted by Rum Punch or Champagne, or it can be one of the most romantic times a couple can spend together. Whichever it is, we promise wonderful, lasting memories.

Sunset Cruise – $400 USD for Two persons –each additional guest $85 USD

Your sunset on the waves includes sparkling wine, water, soft drinks, juices, rum punch, rum/gin/vodka and mixers, beers plus snacks and a selection of finger food. This special cruise departs from The Landings at 5:00 pm and returns at 7:00 pm,  which allows enough time to enjoy a peaceful sail along the North-West coast, enjoying a spectacular sunset before heading home.

Sunset Dinner Cruise – $1500 USD for up to six guests – plus up to  four further guests at $150 pp 

This deluxe private cruise follows the same route as the Sunset Cruise above, but includes, soft drinks, juices, rum punch, rum/gin/Vodka and mixers, beers, sparkling wine and a selection of finger food, followed by a superb, on-board dinner (priced according to menu choice). It’s your choice of fresh fish, marinated chicken breast, and prime beef (Lobster may be available in season) with a variety of sides. All proteins are cooked on the barbecue aboard. Wine is included.

Southern Breeze departs from The Landings at 5:00 pm and returns at 9:00 pm.

Southern Breeze is a Leopard 46, with the genes of a ‘racer’. Built in South Africa by Robertson and Caine, and designed by Gino Morelli and Pete Melvin, who crewed the record-breaking maxi-catamaran PlayStation.

But make no mistake; this beautiful 46-foot catamaran is designed to cruise in comfort and with style. Southern Breeze is certainly a striking boat- from the first glimpse of the high bows to the streamlined, louvred deckhouse.

The hulls are narrow at the waterline (skinny is faster than wide!) and have a very fine entry, flare sharply to a chine just above the water for good interior volume and reserve buoyancy for sailing in a seaway. Even in light winds, the slippery hulls and tall sail plan gives boat speed almost equal to wind speed, in conditions when most cruisers would have the engines going.

The cockpit is big and comfortable, as you’d expect on a boat with a 25-foot beam. Adjustable hatches open forward acting as wind scoops to keep everyone cool when they’re relaxing over lunch. Raised to starboard is the helm seat, with room for two and its own bimini, from which there’s good access to the engine controls, wheel, and sheet winches.

A neat feature is the long seat aft of the cockpit, between the davits, which also folds down to the perfect height for use as a dinghy dock. The wide, flat decks are clear of impediments during crew or guest movement forward. Large louvres, forward of the deckhouse, restrict sun glare into the interior, act as perfect seats and are good steps onto the cabin top.

The anchor and windlass are on the centerline inside a hatch in the bridge deck and the large trampoline, between the forward hulls, provides a comfortable place to sun lounge.

Access below is through sliding glass doors, which essentially extend the saloon into the cockpit at the same level and part of the galley counter folds out, so enhancing this effect. The large easily worked galley is in the starboard aft part of the saloon and is well connected to the cockpit, helm seat, and dinette. The dinette forward provides 360-degree views around the boat and seats eight in comfort.

Clearly this boat is designed to stay cool in the tropics – three ports above the dinette open for good flow-through ventilation right into the cockpit. The interior’s satin-finished cherry woodwork is attractive and the laminate flooring throughout looks good, wears well, and makes for easy maintenance.

The Leopard 46, Southern Breeze, is a great catamaran with plenty of space to enjoy moseying around St. Lucia and the Caribbean, at speed when needed, and to lounge around in some beautiful anchorages.

For comfort, Southern Breeze has a luxury washroom with a shower and a cabin with a daybed if someone gets sleepy, or of there are little ones needing a nap!

Over our 10 day stay at The Landings, we had 2 very different days out on Southern Breeze - both fantastic. Our first day was 2.5hrs cruise south, before 2 snorkel sites and then lunch in Marigot Bay. 8 of us had a blast, Captain Andy was skilled, informative and discreet, aided by Kervan who came snorkelling with us to ensure total safety. After a fab lunch, we cruised back hugging the coast. Our second day, the weather was decidedly dodgy, but we set off and had a lovely exhilarating sail down to Marigot - a swim in Marigot Bay, then lunch at Chateau Mygo. After lunch, we motored back to Rodney Bay and then out around Pigeon Island. Great fun, and totally secure with Captain Andy at the helm.

Do yourself a favor and charter this amazing boat. My family chartered the boat for a half-day and had a fantastic trip down the coast with Captain Andy and Mima. Mima, my wife, and son played go fish while I took pictures of the scenery on our way to Anse Cochon for snorkeling. It was a rainy day so we had unique views of the island as storms and clouds moved in and out. There were very few people snorkeling when we arrived at Anse Cochon which also made for an excellent experience.

The vessel, the crew Mimi, Andy were top notch. Abundant endless food, drink & service. This was my 4th Caribbean private charter, 2nd visit to St Lucia. Also observed their other vessels on the water, have experience with other tour operators.

The deposit payable is US$200 for any cruise, with the balance payable in full the day prior to setting sail.
