X-34 Review

x yachts x34

Rupert Holmes sails the latest model from X-Yachts the X-34.

X-34-Review

The X-34 started to turn heads when Colin Bryne’s ‘Xtravagance’ won Class 3 in her first event, last autumn’s Garmin Hamble Winter Series. This model the smallest in the Danish boat builder’s cruiser-racer range of 12 designs from 34-55ft. It’s less of an out-and-out racing machine than the successful X-35 onedesign that was launched in 2006 and is intended as a dual-purpose vessel that will appeal also to those looking for a performance cruiser.

It exhibits all the hallmarks you’d expect of a contemporary IRC design, including long sailing waterline length, with minimal overhangs, a 9/10ths fractional rig with non-overlapping headsails and a composite low-centre-of gravity fin with a large lead bulb. Hull shape is moderate, with relatively fine forward sections and by, contemporary standards, not overly wide aft.

There are two keel options — the standard draught of 1.9m will appeal to those for whom performance and handling are the key priorities, but if your sailing area demands a shallower draught, there is a 1.6m alternative. At 1,850kg the keel is notably heavier than that of most of the 34’s competitors. The overall displacement, however, is similar to that of the Elan 340 and Dehler 34, which means the X-34’s weight is where it should be — low down.

A galvanised steel frame with three wings is bonded to the hull to take the loads from the mast step and keel bolts, as well as being structurally linked to the chain-plates. This helps to spread the main loads throughout the structure and should offer a good degree of impact protection in the event of grounding.

Hull construction is of solid bi-axial E-glass laminate around this frame, but elsewhere a Divinylcell foam core is used. The deck is also foam cored, with aluminium plates laminated in where deck gear needs to be sited. The hull and deck joint is bonded together, with through bolts providing additional strength in high stress areas.

To ensure all boats are manufactured to exactly the same weight, all materials are weighed and measured out before each individual moulding is laid up. This ensures that exactly the optimum amount of foam, glass and resin is used for each moulding, which maximises strength, minimises weight and ensures consistency between boats.

Rig and layout

X34 -review

Halyards and other lines are run under the deck, creating a clean appearance and maximising the amount of clear deck space. Six Harken self-tailing winches are fitted — two pairs of 40s, plus a pair of 46s as primaries. Blocks and genoa cars are by Ronstan, while clutches are Spinlock’s XTS model. The well planned pit is worked from the cockpit floor, with the winches each side at an optimun height to throw your weight behind and the clutches within easy reach. Two large halyard bags help keep the area tidy. The German mainsheet arrangement is led under the deck to self-tailing winches just forward of the wheel, enabling it to be reached from the helm when sailing short handed, but also allows for a dedicated trimmer when racing fully-crewed.

The wide sidedecks are unobstructed by deck gear, which makes moving around easy and a fulllength moulded toe rail helps provide good ondeck security. It is mounted far enough inboard to allow crew to sit outside of it when hiking, so it doesn’t dig into the thighs. The relatively uncluttered foredeck will win praise from the crew at the sharp end, especially as the forehatch is in the coachroof, not the deck itself.

A number of neat small touches that are all too rarely found on production yachts show the attention to detail that has gone into the planning stage of the deck layout. Anti-chafe plates are positioned where lines run across the edges of the coamings, coachroof and deck, for instance, to prevent lines chafing the mouldings. Teak is standard in the cockpit and bathing platform, while elsewhere there’s an effective while non-slip finish. There’s provision for fitting a sprayhood for cruising which can be folded away into an unobtrusive sock when not in use.

An under-deck headsail furler with a twingroove foil is part of the standard inventory. The boom is configured with single-line reefing, so for cruising or short-handed racing all handling of white sails can be done from the cockpit. There’s an offset bow roller to take the anchor rode and space for an electric windlass in the anchor locker, although obviously from a performance perspective this would be detrimental as it places so much weight right forward.

The cockpit is relatively wide, but it’s possible to brace yourself in place if sitting on the weather seat when the boat’s heeled. A shallow cockpit locker to port, above the aft cabin, is suitable for ropes, smaller fenders and the like and also houses the gas locker. A larger locker to starboard has ample space for the paraphernalia that may be needed when cruising and houses the optional holding tank. The conventional washboards have a custom stowage slot in the big cockpit locker, but it’s not as neat as boats with a captive system that self-stows within the bridge deck. There’s custom stowage for a liferaft under the cockpit sole aft of the wheel and also easy on-deck access to the steering quadrant here.

Racing crews may want to leave the optional removable helmsman’s seat ashore, thus creating a fairly open transom, but it will undoubtedly prove useful for family sailing, as will the standard built in boarding ladder and the — albeit admittedly small — bathing platform.

The double spreader 9/10ths fractional rig is a relatively stiff section from Danish mastmaker John Mast, designed specifically for X-Yachts, that needs neither babystay nor checkstays for support. Discontinuous rod rigging is standard and there’s a powerful backstay tensioner. On our test boat, one of the first off the production line, this was by means of cascade of blocks, but this system is set to change for the ‘magic wheel’ used on the X-35 and X-41. This will give a power advantage of nearly 50:1 when combined with a purchase led to each side of the wheel pedestal.

The sail plan shows a maximum 106 per cent genoa, with the furling sail a modest 95 per cent, which will help make the boat easy to handle short-handed. The size of the furling genoa is such that just two or three rolls will provide a significant reduction in sail area.

On the water

The 150cm wheel is slightly recessed into the cockpit sole and is wide enough to easily see the headsail luff when helming from the side deck, although those with shorter legs may find themselves stretching a little to brace themselves when well heeled.

Our test took place in a stable 11-14 knots of wind and flat water in the Solent. Close-hauled the boat fell effortlessly into the groove at indicated speeds of between 6.3-7.0 knots. There was always plenty of positive feel in the helm and the boat responds quickly.

In these conditions appreciable weather helm could only be created by heavily over-sheeting and the rudder always had a firm grip on the water. This was equally true whether spinnaker reaching with the apparent wind just forward of the beam, or bearing away from close-hauled with the rig fully powered up and the sheets pinned in tight.

Reaching under spinnaker gave 6.5-7.8 knots, depending on the wind angle. Gybing with just three crew on board proved easy and it wouldn’t have needed much additional organisation to do so two-handed.

Although at the smaller end of the builder’s range, this looks to be a boat with excellent offshore potential. The low centre of gravity keel, commendably high ballast ratio of over 40 per cent, and the boat’s refined handling characteristics combine to create a vessel that should comfortably eat up the miles on a long run, as well as looking after the crew in testing weather.

X34 -review

The L-shaped galley is of a good size and has smart moulded worktops, a two-burner gas cooker with oven, decent crockery stowage, a capacious fridge and a single sink with pressurised hot and cold water supply. On the downside it lacks fixed worktop space — apart from a narrow strip at the side of the cooker, the lid of the fridge must double for this purpose. Also fiddles aren’t raised sufficiently high to keep items in place at sea, but this boat is not alone in these respects. The opening port above the cooker gains full marks — it’s amazing how many boats omit such a simple detail.

Opposite the galley is a proper nav station, with a dedicated forward-facing seat, good stowage space and ample room to mount instruments. Aft of the chart table is an all-moulded heads compartment.

The forecabin is a good size and will be the preferred choice for many owners. It has a very long double berth, although the tallest may find headroom is a little limited, and there’s good stowage in lockers either side of the changing area. The aft cabin has less stowage and room to stand up, but the berth itself is larger — it’s 170cm wide at its head, although overhead clearance between the berth and the cockpit sole is somewhat less than that of the forecabin.

The engine installation deserves praise for the quality of its execution and the excellent level of its soundproofing. Verdict X-Yachts has specialised in the performance cruiserracer end of the market for almost 30 years and the X-34 brings the latest thinking to this end of the company’s range. It’s a very strong product in an increasingly competitive sector of the market and will appeal both as an easily-handled fast family cruiser and as a ready-to-go raceboat.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

X-34: 2009 Best Racer/Cruiser

  • By Mark Pillsbury
  • Updated: December 13, 2008

When Cruising World’s preliminary judges reviewed the roster of possible BOTY candidates and set up the Racer/Cruiser category for this year’s contest, little did they anticipate the semantic quandary they’d create with their grouping of performance-oriented sailboats. “Is it more racer than cruiser? Is it cruisier or racier?” asked the BOTY judges, after visiting and sailing each boat. At length, no matter how the distinctions were drawn and debated, the Danish-built X-34 emerged as the best blend of both.

On deck, the 34 is simple but all business. Discontinuous rod rigging supports a John Mast rig that carries a full-batten mainsail and full-hoist nonoverlapping jib. The sail plan is both powerful and easy to handle, thanks to ample-sized self-tailing winches and a Profurl furler recessed below the deck. The mainsail is controlled by a traveler located on the cockpit sole just forward of a wide, sporty wheel and by a double-ended mainsheet led to winches on either side of the helm. The transom is open, though a seat for the helmsman is an option. We sailed closehauled at 6.6 knots in 7 to 10 knots of wind, enjoying feather-light control courtesy of the Solimar steering system.

Below, the interior offers creature comforts for the crew, whether they be a team of grinders or a couple and their friends off on a coastal cruise. Light-colored horizontal-grain mahogany panels are found throughout the saloon and in the double cabins fore and aft. A full galley sits to port, with head and forward-facing nav station opposite. A drop-leaf center-line table and two sea-berth-worthy settees complete the saloon.

The X-Yachts design team, according to the U.S. importer, intended the X-34 to be “easy to handle for a cruising family, yet a sharp competitor on the racecourse.” After sailing the boat last October on Chesapeake Bay, the BOTY judges determined that for either purpose, the designers hit their target spot-on.

JUDGES’ NOTES

  • Amenities include a good V-berth, lots of storage areas, and bookshelves in the saloon.
  • Even with the spinnaker flying, the X-34 was easy for two to handle.
  • An optional windlass can be added to the sizable anchor locker.

BMW Neue Klasse

Bmw neue klasse x, bmw unveils the vision neue klasse x as the conduit to its future range of electric suvs.

Avatar for Scooter Doll

One week after teasing camouflaged images of the next chapter in its “Neue Klasse” EV design strategy, BMW has publicly unveiled the Sport Activity Vehicle to the public. The Vision Neue Klasse X is BMW’s latest entry into the SAV segment and represents the all-electric DNA of a new model that will begin production next year.

“Neue Klasse” (new class) is the designation German automaker BMW has given to its latest electrification strategy. Sure, BMW already makes several BEV models, but the Neue Klasse will be a new era of branded vehicles offering 30% more range, 30% faster charging, and a 25% improvement in efficiency.

BMW’s true vision for the Neue Klasse came to light publicly last year at IAA Mobility when the automaker unveiled the Vision Neue Klasse sedan , based on the i Vision Dee Concept seen at CES a couple of years ago.

At the time, we learned the Neue Klasse of vehicles will feature the  next generation of BMW iDrive , enhancing the driver’s digital experience while offering new personalized drive sounds. Frank Weber of BMW’s Board of Management, responsible for Development, elaborated on the improvements in Neue Klasse EVs:

Neue Klasse means BMW driving at an even higher level. The BMW of the future will have four totally new super-brains: high-performance computers working smartly together on what, up until now, was processed separately. We developed the first super-brain completely in-house. It integrates the entire powertrain and driving dynamics with up to ten times more computing power. The second super-brain will enable the next quantum leap in automated driving,” Weber continues. “Going forward, we will combine four key control units in a single high-performance computer. The result will be more dynamic performance, more precision, more efficiency, and even more fun to drive.

The next all-electric chapter to follow the Vision sedan will be the Neue Klasse X – a sports activity vehicle (SAV) teased by BMW last week . Today, BMW has shared a complete look at the new BEV, which features some design elements that are pretty out of character for the traditional German automaker. Have a look.

x yachts x34

The message behind the debut of the X SAV today is one of vision (no pun intended) and rebirth, but also a focus on the design language that makes a BMW a BMW. BMW Chairman Oliver Zipse elaborated:

Together with the BMW Vision Neue Klasse, the BMW Vision Neue Klasse X showcases the breadth of our future BMW model line-up. The Neue Klasse reflects the variety of all the models that customers want today and in the future – from sport sedan, with all its derivatives, to modern SAV family. In this way, we are underlining that the Neue Klasse is much more than just a car or a specific concept; it is redefining the BMW brand – and, at the same time, will be more BMW than ever.

Top comment by Aigars Mahinovs

BMW will deliver six models based on the new Neue Klasse architecture within two years from its debut late next year. Rolling off the assembly lines across four factories: two in Europe, one in China, one in Mexico. Each factory with its own near-by battery cell production factory. First pre-production cars will be rolling off the assembly lines already this year. That is how a real model offensive looks like.

And there is far more interesting R&D hiding in plain sight here. BMW R&D expenses are currently at over 7.8 billion euros or 5% of revenue (which is very high, Tesla maxes out at ~4%). Those "four totally new super-brains" are going to be very interesting to see in end product.

I believe we have reached the stage in electric vehicle development where we have left far behind the hobby stage (take this car, strip motor out, put battery it) and the basic electromobility stage (how many kWh does it have, what is the charging curve like, does it cold-gate) and we are not entering into era of advanced electric car innovations that are not even all that simple to explain. Like hardware that adjusts brakes, power delivery, steering, multiple active suspension components per-wheel at rates that are an order of magnitude faster than anything did in the past. The cars are improving in ways that can't even be realistically described in sales literature. And yet that brings real improvements on the race track, but also saves lives on a slippery mountain road.

While the Vision Neue Klasse represented the automaker’s plans for the future of all-electric sedans, the Vision X is a glimpse into its plans for its “X” range of SAVs and SUVs. BMW says the new BEV concept represents a new breed of vehicle with “active lifestyle, efficient dynamics, and a confident stance.”

The exterior features taller ground clearance, while the flat 800V Neue Klasse architecture allows for more interior space and a cabin decorated with warm textiles that are sustainably sourced and manufactured.

The future BEV models that will spawn from today’s X reveal will be designed based on three core principles, according to BMW: electric, digital, and circular. BMW points out a fourth dimension in this new SAV – driving pleasure.

There are no specs on this one, as it remains a design exercise. Still, there is plenty to look at inside and out if you’re a fan of BMW vehicles because the automaker intends to bring a lot of these elements with it to its third chapter in electrification. See more below:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Four U.S. Army boats, loaded with tons of equipment and steel pier segments, left Virginia on Tuesday, heading to Gaza as part of the U.S. effort to expand the delivery of food and other supplies to starving Palestinians as Israel’s war against Hamas drags on.

The ships pulled out of docks at Joint Base Langley-Eustis and headed down the James River toward the Atlantic Ocean for what could be a month-long voyage to the Mediterranean Sea. There, at a yet-to-be-announced location along the Gaza shore, they will build and begin to operate a floating dock to receive the aid.

Since Hamas militants attacked Israel on Oct. 7, Israel’s military has battered the territory, killing more than 30,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, and creating a humanitarian catastrophe . The U.N. says virtually all of Gaza’s 2.3 million people are struggling to find food. But getting humanitarian aid to the area has been difficult, due to the ongoing hostilities and struggles to coordinate with the Israeli military, which has blocked routes and slowed deliveries due to inspections.

The latest Pentagon plan calls for the U.S. military to build what is called a modular causeway system. Off shore, the Army will build a large floating platform where ships can unload large containers of aid. Then the aid will be transferred by the Army to a motorized string of steel causeway sections that have been pushed to the shore.

(AP Photo/Bebeto Matthews, File)

That pier is expected to be as much as 1,800 feet (550 meters) long, with two lanes, and the Pentagon has said it could accommodate the delivery of more than 2 million meals a day for Gaza residents. Officials have not said who will be unloading the containers and taking the aid ashore. President Joe Biden has said there will be no U.S. troops on the ground in Gaza.

On Tuesday, as family members and senior Army commanders watched, about 70 soldiers with the 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) pulled away from the docks in four U.S. Army vessels: the USAV Wilson Wharf, USAV Matamoros and USAV Monterrey, all Army landing crafts, and the larger USAV SP4 James A. Loux, a logistics support watercraft.

The brigade’s commander, Army Col. Sam Miller, said about 500 of his soldiers will participate in the mission. All together, Pentagon officials have said about 1,000 U.S. troops will be involved.

Calling it a complicated mission, Miller said the transit will take about a month, but it will depend on weather and any possible high seas. The actual construction, he said, will take about a week, but that also could be hampered by weather. Then it will take additional time to get the delivery process coordinated with those providing the aid and the system up and running. Defense officials have said it will take about two months to get the deliveries started.

The Army’s vessels and maritime capabilities are unique and not as well known as the Navy’s. The last time the 7th Transportation Brigade did a similar mission to construct a large pier was in Haiti in 2010. But it has participated in a number of major military exercises.

“The soldiers here are energized, they’re motivated, they’re excited,” Miller said, adding that the new humanitarian mission “gives them purpose and meaning” and highlights the Army’s watercraft. He noted that just 36 hours after Biden ordered the operation, the first Army vessel — the USAV General Frank S. Besson logistics ship — left Joint Base Langley-Eustis on Saturday.

Miller said a larger Maritime Sealift Command ship will also be leaving Virginia in the coming days, and will be carrying some of the bigger equipment and more of the steel pier segments.

X-382

In common with the first three models in the new Performance Cruiser range, the X-382 sported a large masthead rig, a large wheel, and a teak interior with moulded teak bulkheads that ensured maximum use of space. The X-382 was mainly focused on the cruising market, but was completely in tune with the new line, offering excellent sailing performance and comfort.

Production Years: 1995 — 2003 Number Built: 141 Hull Length: 11.73 m

X-612

The X-612 represented another milestone in the company’s development. One example, “Dali”, raced in Scandinavia for several years, under the control of X-Yachts’ world-class sailors, Dan Petersen and Niels Ditmar.

Production Years: 1995 — 2004 Number Built: 12 Hull Length: 18.29 m

X-302

Replacing the X-312 using almost the same hull, though with a less raked bow and stern. The first series was delivered with a composite cast iron/lead bulb keel, which made her very stiff. A cheaper cast iron keel version was subsequently introduced with improved light wind performance.

Production Years: 1994 — 2004 Number Built: 117 Hull Length: 9.08 m

X-332

Developed in parallel with the X-302 and one of the most successful and popular X-Yachts models ever. The X-332 was unmatched in the way she combined performance and comfort. A composite cast iron/ lead bulb keel and fractional rig with discontinuous rod rigging were standard. Later a Sport version appeared featuring a deeper, lighter keel, to match developments of the IMS rule.

Production Years: 1994 — 2005 Number Built: 432 Hull Length: 10.06 m

X-442

The third Performance Cruiser also became a “classic” and remained in production for more than 10 years. She was stiffer than the competition, and soon she became a benchmark for designers and builders of this new breed of performance cruisers.

Production Years: 1993 — 2003 Number Built: 127 Hull Length: 13.51 m

X-362

This was an exceptionally stiff yacht and appealed to more conservative sailors who demanded high levels of comfort. First introduced with a masthead rig and a curved mahogany interior. A more traditional teak interior was subsequently offered.

Production Years: 1993 — 2003 Number Built: 93 Hull Length: 10.70 m

IMX 38

The good looks of the X-382 were obvious from the moment she emerged from the production mould. She was so appealing that the idea was born to create a new racer/cruiser that would perform well under the dominant IMS international handicap rule.

Production Years: 1992 — 2000 Number Built: 92 Hull Length: 11.41 m

X-412

X-Yachts’ first model in the new “Performance Cruiser” range where the influence of IOR had completely disappeared as IMS became the dominant international handicap rule. The X-412 became another trendsetter and remained in production for more than 10 years.

40 ft One Ton

40 ft One Ton

Production Years: 1990 — 1990 Number Built: 1 Hull Length: 12.12 m

X-512

Entering the 50ft market for the new Performance Cruiser range, sporting twin wheel steering, a large masthead rig and a comfortable teak interior.

Production Years: 1990 — 1995 Number Built: 17 Hull Length: 15.57 m

Production Years: 1989 — 1994 Number Built: 64 Hull Length: 9.24 m

X-119

Originally sold as a one-off to a Swedish newspaper publisher, with the rights for X-Yachts to put into production. She followed the X-79/X-99 design philosophy, featuring a T-keel and became popular among those who wanted a very fast, non-handicap racer/cruiser.

Production Years: 1988 — 1992 Number Built: 74 Hull Length: 12.00 m

X-342

IOR had become less important as handicap rules were more locally based and didn’t take the stability into account. This allowed for the production of a much stiffer yacht than the IOR-designed X-102 and X-95. A masthead version was offered but almost all clients chose the fractional rig.

Production Years: 1988 — 1994 Number Built: 105 Hull Length: 10.21 m

X-45

Built in the same hull mould, this luxury version of the X-452 was very much oriented to cruising. A variety of layouts, including three- and four-cabin versions were offered and became popular around the Mediterranean.

Production Years: 1987 — 1991 Number Built: 20 Hull Length: 13.92 m

X-372

With the demand for IOR cruiser/racers fading, the X-372 was designed without consideration towards handicap rules. A Sport version was offered with tiller steering and fractional rigging while the popular Prestige version had wheel steering, teak decks and a masthead rig.

Production Years: 1987 — 1992 Number Built: 120 Hull Length: 11.28 m

X-One Ton Mk1

X-One Ton Mk1

Based on the same hull as X-402, but with new deck layout, keel and rudder as well as a lighter interior and modified sail plan. The Irish owned “Alliance” finished eighth at the first One Ton Cup, with IOR’s upper rating band of 30.55 ft, sailed in La Trinité, France. In 1985 Hull 05 “Maitresse”, together with two other X-One Ton yachts, formed the first ever Danish Admiral’s Cup team and came fifth. X-One Ton “Euro” was the third best scoring individual yacht.

Production Years: 1986 — 1986 Number Built: 12 Hull Length: 12.12 m

X-One Ton Mk 2

X-One Ton Mk 2

The successful modifications made to the X-3/4 Ton were also introduced to the X-One Ton. The prototype was nicknamed “Dolly Parton” as her measurement bumbs were quite impressive! Hull 14 “Andelstanken” won the One Ton Yachts World Championship in Mallorca in 1986, skippered by Henrik Søderlund of North Sails with tactics by Niels Ditmar from X-Yachts. The X-One Ton “Seaways” came fourth.

Production Years: 1986 — 1989 Number Built: 12 Hull Length: 12.12 m

X-3/4 Ton Mk 2

X-3/4 Ton Mk 2

With a modified hull (including added measurement bumps), a new semi-elliptical keel and rudder and increased stability and sail area, this version came first, second, fourth and fifth in the Three Quarter Ton Cup World Championship. A winner was born!

Production Years: 1985 — 1990 Number Built: 51 Hull Length: 10.03 m

X-99

Launched in July 1985 as a big sister to the X-79. More than 100 units were presold and initially four yachts had to be built each week to satisfy the hungry market. The X-99 became X-Yachts’ first ISAF recognized class, and still hosts annual World Championships. X-99/155 “Hong Kong X-Press” owned by X-Yachts Hong Kong importer Rick and Inge Strompf, participated in the X-99 World Championship in Copenhagen in 1987 and the following year in Vejle, Denmark, where they won the title with Volvo 70 “PUMA” skipper, Ken Read, at the helm.

Production Years: 1985 — 2004 Number Built: 605 Hull Length: 9.96 m

X-402

The first 40ft model was a true trendsetter with Hull 01 “X-Large” having its World Premiere at Copenhagen International Boatshow in January 1984. Sporting a large diameter wheel and rod rigging as standard, she was offered with both masthead and fractional rigs and opened up the more luxury oriented market for X-Yachts. The masthead version proved the most popular.

Production Years: 1984 — 1990 Number Built: 79 Hull Length: 12.09 m

X-3/4 Ton Mk 1

X-3/4 Ton Mk 1

Hull 07, “Soldier Blue”, won the 3/4 Ton World Championship in 1981 and was skippered by Ib Ussing Andersen, helmed by Jens Christensen with tactics by Lars Bo Ive, all now of North Sails fame. In 1982 “Lille du” won the same title and gave X-Yachts a head start in the international yachting arena.

Production Years: 1981 — 1987 Number Built: 173 Hull Length: 10.02 m

COMMENTS

  1. X-34
