Riverboats in Dubuque

The mighty Mississippi River is the world’s fourth longest river and makes its way through Dubuque’s front yard. With a rich culture tied to the waterway - it is common to see riverboats making their way up and down the river even today.

Along the Mississippi

During late spring through late fall, you can see a variety of riverboats making their way to Dubuque, stopping to explore Iowa’s oldest community.

American Lady Yacht

The American Lady Yacht is Dubuque’s only riverboat offering daily cruises from Schmitt Island. Whether it’s a lunch, happy hour, or dinner cruise, this vessel has both indoor and outdoor seating and you may even get a chance to drive the boat with the captain. This boat is located alongside restaurant (and local hangout) Catfish Charlie’s.

Riverboat Twilight

The Riverboat Twilight, based in LeClaire, IA offers guests the chance to stay overnight in Dubuque on one of their weekly two-day cruises, starting in May. This vessel features a calliope that plays music as it departs a community and is recognizable by the locals who can be seen waving to passengers. It also has three floors with indoor and outdoor seating.

Celebration Belle

Another boat that comes from south of Dubuque, is the Celebration Belle, whose home port is Moline, IL. This ship is the largest non-gaming boat on the upper Mississippi River. This paddle wheeler offers a variety of cruises including a trip from the Quad Cities into Dubuque beginning in June.

Ask a question

How much would a Happy Hour cruise be for 3 people on June 23rd? Also, what would a dinner cruise cost (is that the sunset cruise?). Thanks.

I suggest going to americanladycruises.com and clicking on the tabs in the menu bar. All that information and more, thank you!

We enjoyed the cruise very much. It was a bit crowded on the deck serving food; impossible to get out of seats without having other people move. Perhaps having the sightseeing only cruise on a separate sailing, rather than at the same time as the lunch cruise. This was very inexpensive for a dining cruise; I would have paid $10-15 more for more room. Food was good, drinks reasonably priced. Narration was interesting, but sometimes difficult to hear. Overall a very nice time!

This was the second time taking a group of about 25 on the American Lady. We continue to come back because we have so much fun and the food is great. I would 10000% recommend doing one of these if you are in Dubuque. The staff could not be nicer and you will have a lovely evening cruising the Mississippi. Thank you, Brian, for taking such good care of us and all of the guests on board.

We have taken two lunch cruises on the American Lady and overall the experiences were enjoyable. Positives from these experiences: First, the interior of the boat was clean and neat. The chairs and tables were comfortable and sturdy considering the occasional sway of the boat, and there was enough room to move around comfortably. The restrooms were nicer than we expected. The ladies room was clean, comfortable and well-stocked. The staff was very pleasant. The ladies at the bar were quick and friendly. The server at the lunch buffet was also quick and helpful. I noted that the staff seemed happy to go above and beyond - from offering a birthday boy a chance to steer the boat to helping guests with advice for the rest of their vacation in the area. One area that I was pretty neutral on was the food. We were served fried chicken, roasted beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn and pasta salad. The chicken was tasty and cooked well, and everyone in our group enjoyed it - as well as the roast beef. The mashed potatoes and corn weren't rave-worthy, but were perfectly pleasant. The pasta salad was incredibly sweet, to the point that no one in our group ate it, but overall there was enough good food that no one in our group went home hungry. If I had to pick a few things to nitpick... Being a tour above all else, there are announcements along with the sightseeing. The first thing I'd say about the announcements is that they are incredibly loud. During my first trip (alone) on the American Lady I thought I might just have sensitive hearing, but I brought others on the second trip and my companions were literally plugging their ears during the sight seeing announcements. We tried moving around thinking we were close to a speaker, but no luck. I don't know if this is because many of the guests may be older and hard of hearing, but we all groaned when the captain came on to describe the sights. As for the content of the announcements, many of the announcements didn't feel value added. The home of a textbook company owner, the home of a guy who rents out traffic cones, a campground that someone wants to turn into condos - a lot of it just felt like filler. Especially considering the volume issue, I think I would've enjoyed the announcements more if they stuck to the essentials like where we were headed, the interesting train bridge, the locks, etc. I did find myself wishing for one extra announcement: to make sure that children aren't left unattended. A couple groups of parents left their 4 young children unattended at the table next to us, and they were pretty rowdy. Kids will be kids, but screaming, knocking over our drinks and running into people were more than we bargained for. This is definitely not the crew's fault, but I wonder if a reminder announcement would've helped - hard to say.

i am a home town Dubuque girl and this was a first time on the American Lady for me. A small group went out for a happy hour cruise. It was a beautiful evening for a boat ride. We sat out on the upper back deck with some friends. The staff working were friendly and efficient. i am not a beer drinker, but tried the two for one margaritas. It was good. They also provided chicken tenders as part of the ticket cost. Two chicken tenders. Hardly worth the going up and down the stairs to get them. My suggestion would be to stop providing two chicken fingers and offer something that is less costly as a snack with the drinks. If you are looking to go on the boat, there is an enclosed space on the main floor of the boat. It has decent bathrooms. The steps up are short and steep. There is a raised threshold from the inside to outside of the boat that is a doozy if you miss it. Our ride went south to the area of the Julien Dubuque monument and back to the harbor.

Photo of Carla V.

Dinner cruise was best on the upper deck after dinner! The chicken and pork were dry, but the rest of menu was ok and more than enough to return for seconds. Dessert was the best! Staff was short handed. The information shared was the most interesting! What a great area! Boat was very nice for a party of 40, more than that would have felt crowded. Was disappointed that the Captain did not take time with our grandson celebrating a 13th birthday with a special memory at the wheel once we docked. Weather of course was cool while the boat moved and air conditioning while eating was most appreciated!

Photo of Kenneth R.

The Cruise itself was nice, but the food was much to be desired. They had fish and pork tenderloin. The fish was good, but the pork tenderloin was extremely dry, making it tough to eat. A little gravy may have helped for both the meat and the potatoes. The gentleman serving the pork did try to get some juice on it, but was not good enough. The rest of the crew was good and pleasant. I would not recommend the dinner cruise because the food was not satisfactory. We had brought some friends from Florida for the cruise and I was embarrassed by the food quality. I love showing off Dubuque, Dubuque County and our great community. Hopefully future guests have better quality food. When I travel, I tell people we have the best quality pork in the country and then we had this disappointment. The rest of their stay was top notch.

We were visiting Dubuque for the first time and decided a Dinner River Cruise might be fun. Ordering tickets online, was clear and simple, the staff when we arrived were well prepared and check in was quick and easy as well. We enjoyed a drink while we waited for departure time, Captain was greeting at boarding and we left on time. Food was great, plenty of places to sit. The cruise took us by lots of things to see, was also fun because we had been there a day or 2 and could see places we had visited from the river. Once it was darker it was very cool to see downtown lit up. There was a boat in distress in the dark, the captain and crew contacted help and remained there to ensure they would be taken care of (to shallow for the Yacht) NO ONE seemed to be coming to help, so they radioed Catfish Charlie, who put a boat in and came out and towed the boat safely. Great food Catfish Charlie and KUDOS for an awesome rescue. Jim

This is a joke .... we were supposed to be on a 2 hour cruise with appetizers and a cash bar, but they ran out of food after about 45 minutes ..... can't believe that they would know how much food to bring on the cruise!

Hi Bill, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. You were invited to take a cruise by a private party that chartered our yacht. They ordered food for a smaller number of guests than they invited, and didn't order more food for the additional guests. When someone charters our yacht, we will advise them, but they make the final decision on food details. Thanks for taking a cruise with us!

Photo of Ken A.

The beer on tap sucked, talked to a Catfish Charlie employee on the cruise and he said the lighter IPA beer that was also supposed to be available on the cruise, the keg went empty shortly after the cruise began. That should have checked and the keg replaced before the boat left the dock. Drank two glasses of the dark IPA beer and had to choke it down, it tasted terrible. IPA beer should not be the beer available for a cruise like that, it should be at least two choices of traditional beer, one light and one regular.

the food was ok. over all we had a good time. the staff was very helpful. I would recommend.

 America’s Authentic Mississippi River Experience

riverboat cruises in dubuque iowa

“The face of the water, in time, became a wonderful book- a book that was a dead language to the uneducated passenger, but which told its mind to me without reserve, delivering its most cherished secrets as clearly as if it uttered them with a voice.

And it was not a book to be read once and thrown aside, for it had a new story to tell every day.”

Port Burlington IA cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Burlington IA, Iowa. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Burlington IA is a Missouri River cruise port and town in Des Moines County (Iowa USA) with population around 25,000. B-known for its Snake Alley (world's most crooked street), Burlington developed as a river port (during the USA's steamboat era / late-18th-19th-centuries) and a central city on the Burlington Route (CBQ-Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad). In 1970, the railroad merged into Burlington Northern Railroad, which in 1997 merged into BNSF Railway (North America's largest freight train network). One of BNSF's main east-west lines crosses Mississippi River at Burlington.

In mid-November 2019, world's largest river cruise company - Viking Cruises (Basel Switzerland-based) announced that Burlington IA will become a regular port of call of the company's new Missouri River cruise division in the USA. Viking and Burlington City officials also signed a 2-year agreement according to which the city leased docking (riverside berthing) facilities to Viking Cruises as the company pays USD 1 per disembarking passenger. The first (of all 6 planned) newbuild riverboats - Viking Mississippi - is scheduled to start operations in 2022. Viking planned 30 dockings in Burlington for the period July 2022 through October 2023. Future plans include adding Burlington as a daily visited Viking river cruise port. The deal is not exclusive and allows the City to provide berthing also to other cruise lines boats.

Next table shows Viking's Missouri River cruise itineraries that include Burlington IA.

As cruise port, Burlington IA is included in the schedule of American Queen Voyages/Steamboat Company (AQSC) -owned paddlewheel riverboats American Duchess and American Queen . Next table shows AQSC's 14-night southbound itinerary from Red Wing to New Orleans. Prices in 2020 started at ~USD $4500-5700 pp (double-occupancy balcony cabin rates) depending on ship and departure date.

AQSC's cruise price-inclusive shore excursions include city tours visiting Des Moines County Heritage Center (ex Burlington Public Library), Garrett-Phelps House Museum (mid-19th-century mansion), Burlington Capitol Theatre (1937-built cinema), Port Burlington Welcome Center (on the riverfront), Snake Alley (world's "crookedest street").

The current-day city's economy is based on transportation (river shipping and freight trains) and manufacturing plants, including Iowa Army Ammunition Plant (American Ordnance LLC), General Electric, Shearer's Foods (snack products manufacturer), Winegard Company (connectivity products). Region's largest employer is Great River Health (southeast Iowa's largest hospital). Other major companies include Murray Turbomachinery (heavy industrial equipment) and Case Corporation (part of CNH Industrial NV, manufacturer of agricultural-construction equipment, buses-trucks-commercial vehicles, industrial-marine powertrains).

Amtrak (USA's passenger railway network) connects to Burlington with daily trains between Illinois and California (Chicago-Emeryville, San Francisco Bay). Southeast Iowa Airport is approx 5 mi (8 km) south of downtown and serves regular domestic flights (of Air Choice One) linking to Chicago (Illinois) , Mason City (Iowa) and St Louis (Missouri) . Quad City Airport serves international flights and is located in Moline IA - approx 70 mi (110 km) north of Burlington.

The available conversion space offers several dedicated exterior access points, existing shared elevator and has already been retrofitted with new windows & some mechanicals creating good value-add investment opportunity.

Dubuque, Iowa is located on the Upper Mississippi River at the border of both Wisconsin & Illinois and is a regional hub of tourism with the nearby Field of Dreams baseball complex, multiple casinos with entertainment venues and is a favorite stop for travelers on American Cruise Lines and Viking Mississippi river cruises.
