Bluewater Sailboat – Hardin 45

Also called: bounty 44, hardin 44, hardin voyager 45.

In the late 1970s, Bill Hardin , best known as a pioneer of the Taiwanese boat manufacturing business for the American market, designed the Hardin 45 “Voyager.” It’s a heavy displacement bluewater yacht that’s especially well-suited to cruising in luxury and style. Hardin International produced the boats in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, between 1977 and 1982 and sold them through its US distributor, East-West Yachts in Marina Del Rey, California. Originally built and sold as the Bounty 44, Hardin made extensive improvements to the yacht in 1980. These included expanding the boat’s length to 45′ 2″ and reducing the draught from five and a half inches to five and a half inches.

The transom was trimmed along the way, and a couple of portlights in the hull were relocated to the aft cabin roof. Dealers would refer to both boats as the Hardin 45 to avoid confusion among clients who might not notice the difference.

These Bluewater sailboats were generally of high quality, with great structural integrity and joiner work. By the time the facility closed in the mid-1980s, approximately 130 Hardin 45s had been produced.

  • LOA: 45′ 2″
  • LWL: 34′ 6″
  • Beam: 13′ 4″
  • Draft: 5′ 6″
  • Displacement: 32,000 lbs.
  • Ballast: 8,500 lbs.
  • Sail Area: 809 sq.ft.
  • Bridge Clearance: 56′ 0″
  • Headroom: 6′ 3″
  • Fuel: 200 US Gal.
  • Water: 200 US Gal.
  • Holding: 25 US Gal.
  • Designer: Bill Hardin
  • Builder: Hardin International Co.
  • Also Known As: Bounty 44, Hardin 44, Hardin Voyager 45

The majority of the thought behind the design of the Bluewater Sailboat Hardin 45 appears to have been to optimize the experience under anchor. With so much glass above deck (giving in that all-important “light and airy” feel), storm shutters for all of that glass are practically required for those planning bluewater passages. Back in the day, the factory offered fibreglass storm shutters, but few people took advantage of the offer.

The elegant and roomy interiors finished in hand-made teak drew the most attention in these center-cockpit designs. The split-level salon serves as the centerpiece of the accommodations, providing an open and airy sensation thanks to the abundant light streaming in through the elevated salon glass, portlights, and butterfly hatch. Two seagoing berths were located on the lower split level. There are two pilot berths in the mid-cabin ahead of this section, which many uses as a “storage garage,” while on some boats, this area was changed to make place for a larger master head with tub/shower combo. There is also a big aft stateroom with an extra head. A few charter boats were created, which packed additional cabins into the arrangement. A v-berth and a double cabin stateroom were located forward the salon.

Performance

At 32,000 pounds, the Bluewater Hardin 45 is clearly a hefty boat with poor light-air performance. On the other hand, with only 25% of their weight in ballast and a shoal draught keel, they don’t go very far in blow. They are, nonetheless, really comfy.

At least one Hardin has been credited with a nine-year circumnavigation; after 38,000 miles under the keel. It is noted that it isn’t that fast for a boat, but she’s very swift for a home. Another Hardin sailed for 10,000 miles confirms that she is a solid, slow, and comfortable, Bluewater Sailboat.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Derived from the earlier HARDIN 45. Built in Taiwan and finished in NJ, USA.
