How This Superyacht Became an Overnight Geopolitical Mystery
By Jessica Cherner
The Russia sanctions are growing, seemingly by the hundreds, every day. And much of the world is watching with glee as oligarchs’ luxuries are being hunted down by international governments. If we’ve learned anything from movies like The Wolf of Wall Street, which is based on a true story, it’s that some of the world’s wealthiest enjoy flaunting their money. Not only do billionaires often spend their money on toys like European sports cars and diamond-encrusted watches, but they also want the world to know to whom these extremely rare possessions belong.
After all, Jeff Bezos has been accumulating quite a bit of press as he works on dismantling a historic bridge in Rotterdam to sail his $500 million yacht onto the open sea. But some billionaires play their cards a bit closer to the chest. Case in point: the owner of a 459-foot superyacht docked in a Tuscan port. No one, not even the Italian police, can identify who the enormous vessel belongs to, which leads the world to believe it may be someone tied to one of the world’s most currently despised leaders: Vladimir Putin.
Scheherazade , which costs an estimated $700 million, boasts not one but two helicopter decks.
Few believe that the floating mansion actually belongs to the Russian president—whose recent invasion of Ukraine is earning more sanctions than he, his country, and his billionaire friends thought imaginable—but many are more certain that it belongs to someone with ties to the top of the Russian government.
Since the devastating fate of Ukraine started to unfold, the United States, along with the UK and the European Union, have come together to track down the luxuries belonging to Putin’s friends, who are part of a massively growing list of billionaires facing punishing sanctions. That’s why this boat, one of the world’s largest and costliest, is such a point of interest.
International governments have been going after the luxurious belongings of Russian oligarchs since Putin and his government started getting slapped with sanctions two weeks ago, so assuming the yacht hiding out in Italy is one of Putin’s friend’s, things aren’t looking so good. However, no one can confirm just yet. The ship’s British captain, Guy Bennett-Pearce, promised that Putin had never been on the boat and that it didn’t belong to him, but he didn’t confirm whether or not the yacht belonged to a Russian national.
Russian president Vladimir Putin.
Considering all of the amenities on the boat, dubbed Scheherazade , it’s not exactly an unfair guess to assume the owner is a Russian oligarch. Scheherazade , which costs an estimated $700 million, boasts not one but two helicopter decks, an indoor swimming pool with a retractable cover that transforms the pool into a dance floor, a fully equipped gym, and bathrooms complete with gold-plated fixtures. That’s a lot of sparkle even for the level of wealth associated with a purchase this big. However, the glamour isn’t the unusual part; the degree of intentional secrecy is.
The superyacht community does entertain a level of confidentiality—mostly for security purposes—but the Scheherazade is kept under so many wraps that it makes people believe something dubious must be going on when it comes to the owner’s identity. For instance, all of the contractors and crew members signed nondisclosure agreements, there’s a custom cover to hide the boat’s nameplate, and when Scheherazade arrived at the port, workers built a metal structure on the pier to keep passersby from seeing the yacht.
The 459-foot superyacht is currently docked in a Tuscan port.
This yacht, however, isn’t the only one catching people’s attention as of late. The world’s second-biggest yacht, called Eclipse , is owned by Roman Abramovich, the Russian billionaire who owns the British soccer club, Chelsea. On Thursday, March 10, the UK government sanctioned Abramovich's assets.
As for Scheherazade , that mystery is still being investigated, and until the feds can figure out who the not-so-proud owner is, the behemoth on water will remain where it is, shrouded in a cloak of well-orchestrated secrecy.

Superyachts tracked: Abramovich’s boat heads east after sanctions
Solaris is tracked off coast of Sicily, joining hurried sailings of Russian yachts to avoid seizure
- Ukraine-Russia war – latest updates
- The oligarchs and business figures on western sanction lists
Roman Abramovich’s superyacht Solaris was heading east across the Mediterranean on Thursday after sanctions were extended to the Chelsea FC owner.
His $600m vessel, tracked off the coast of Sicily on Thursday, appeared to have joined the hurried sailings of Russian oligarchs moving their superyachts across the world to avoid seizure by governments enforcing sanctions in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine .
The Solaris left the Barcelona port where it had been undergoing repairs on Tuesday, according to Reuters, and by Thursday afternoon it was rounding the southern coast of Sicily. Abramovich’s other yacht, the even more luxurious Eclipse – estimated to be worth more than $1bn after extensive renovations – set sail east from the Caribbean island of St Maarten towards international waters shortly after other oligarchs’ yachts were seized.
The Eclipse had crossed much of the Atlantic by midday Thursday when it was located to the west of the Canary Islands according to vesselfinder.com.
Abramovich was sanctioned by the US in 2018 but joined the UK list on Thursday morning. A spokesperson for Abramovich said earlier this week: “We never comment on the movements of the yacht or any other vehicles or vessels.”
The 163-metre Eclipse, which includes nine decks, two helipads and a 16-metre swimming pool that can be converted into a dancefloor, is the most expensive vessel owned by individuals on the growing US, EU and UK sanction lists.
Many super-rich Russians – including some not yet on the sanctions list, but with links to the Russian president, Vladimir Putin – appear to be attempting to move their superyachts to countries without formal extradition agreements with western governments.
French and Italian authorities last week seized three yachts worth more than $225m (£170m).
Tracking data from the shipping intelligence service MarineTraffic shows that Titan, a $100m superyacht owned by Alexander Abramov, a billionaire iron and steel magnate, arrived in Maldives waters last week after sailing from Fethiye in Turkey. Its owner, who holds a big stake alongside Abramovich in the London-listed coal and steel group Evraz, is not on any sanctions lists.
Clio, a $65m superyacht owned by the aluminium billionaire Oleg Deripaska, who has been subject to US sanctions since 2018, was reported last week to be heading for Raa Atoll in the Maldives. The Maldives is an Indian Ocean island nation with no extradition treaty with the US or the EU.
The US president, Joe Biden, said last week the US was actively working to seize the superyachts, luxury apartments and private jets of oligarchs linked to Putin. “We are coming for your ill-begotten gains,” he said in his State of the Union address .
The White House spokesperson, Jen Psaki, added: “We want [Putin] to feel the squeeze, we want the people around him to feel the squeeze.”
Three ways you can help the people of Ukraine from the UK
Support local charities
There are several Ukrainian charities working on the ground. Sunflower of Peace is a charity that helps paramedics and doctors, and has been fundraising for supplies, which includes first aid medical tactical backpacks.
United Help Ukraine focuses on providing medical supplies and humanitarian aid, and raising awareness of the conflict.
Voices of Children aims to help children affected by the war in eastern Ukraine, providing support through art therapy, psychologists, video storytelling and a number of other methods.
The British Red Cross has launched an emergency appeal to help Ukraine. The charity will be updating its webpage with news on the work its team is doing, and how support will be used to help people.
Support local journalism
English-language news outlets based in the country, such as Kyiv Independent and the New Voice of Ukraine , are covering developments on the ground as the conflict unfolds, using local journalists. The Kyiv Independent says it was created by journalists in order to defend editorial independence. This site on Twitter covers many local journalists in Ukraine.
Write to your local MP
This can be a way to lobby the British government to place further sanctions on the Russian government and its associates. You can get in touch with your local MP via email or post to their constituency address. Instructions on how to get in touch can be found on parliament.uk.
Grant Shapps, the UK transport secretary, said the government would detain any yachts suspected of being Russian-owned if they entered UK waters. “I want to make it impossible for individuals with links to Putin to use their aircraft in UK airspace, at UK airports or airfields, and any aircraft suspected of being linked to Russia will be detained,” he said. “Likewise, their yachts. Any of these floating gin palaces with an identifiable Russian connection will be detained if it attempts to dock in a British port.”
France detained Amore Vero , a 280ft, $120m superyacht they said was owned by Igor Sechin, in the Mediterranean port of La Ciotat. Sechin, who is also facing sanctions, is the chief executive of the Russian oil producer Rosneft and a close ally of Putin. Amore Vero, which means “true love” in Italian, can accommodate 14 guests and 28 crew.
French police, who boarded the vessel at night last week, said the ship was in port for repairs, but its crew were “making arrangements to leave in a hurry, without having completed the planned work”.
Italy’s Guardia di Finanza boarded and impounded Lena , a 41-metre, $45m yacht owned by Gennady Timchenko, a close friend of Putin who has an estimated $21bn fortune held in several large Russian raw materials companies, in Sanremo. Lady M, a 64-metre, $60m yacht owned by Alexei Mordashov, was seized in the nearby Ligurian port of Imperia.
Dilbar , the world’s largest superyacht by gross tonnage, which the US government said is owned by Alisher Usmanov , was reported to have been seized in Hamburg. However, German authorities later clarified that the 156-metre vessel, which has been valued at $600m, has not been impounded but requires an export waiver to leave the port.
Usmanov, who reportedly owns Witanhurst, the second biggest private home in the UK after Buckingham Palace, was added to the EU’s sanction list on Wednesday. The US imposed sanctions on him last week after the White House described him as a “one of Russia’s wealthiest individuals and a close ally of Putin”.
The yachts identified by the Guardian as linked to oligarchs are worth more than $3bn. The ultimate ownership of superyachts can be difficult to confirm as many are owned through shell companies registered in tax havens.

Meet the Masters:
Captain Erwan Le Rouzic
At the helm of Scenic Eclipse
Captain Erwan Le Rouzic has been at the helm of luxury expedition ships for 17 years, driven by his passion for sharing the wonders of the world with guests. As a Captain of Scenic Eclipse, he is proud to be in charge of the most innovative Discovery Yacht on the water. From planning epic Discovery Excursions with the Discovery Leader to making minute-by-minute changes to optimize the itinerary and meeting guests on the wheelhouse , every day is different for this dedicated maritime master.
Have you always been a passionate sailor? And why did you want to become a Captain?
It was a slow evolution. I come from the Atlantic coast in France, so I was always sailing with my parents and my grandparents. The connection with the ocean comes naturally to me and I like traveling. As I learned about this job, I loved the fact that you have responsibilities very quickly. When I was 20 and a first officer, I was already in charge of a ship for a few hours. The one thing that was missing was getting to share this passion with others and that’s what I like about expedition cruising; you are sharing this experience with the guests.
How did you come to be one of the Scenic Eclipse Captains?
Almost 10 years ago, I was the Captain of an expedition ship that Scenic chartered to Antarctica. It was the first time I ever sailed south of the Antarctic Circle and it was also the first time for the company. It was one of the best journeys ever for me because I love the way Scenic operates, and I love the guests they have. When Scenic Eclipse launched, I knew it would be a fantastic challenge to be part of this completely new and unique Discovery Yacht. So, I put my name forward and made sure I would be where I am now.
LEFT: Captain Erwan Le Rouzic and team
What's involved in preparing for a new Scenic Eclipse season?
The first step is taken very far ahead; proper planning starts almost two years in advance. We plan itineraries very precisely. It's important that we are able to use all the capabilities of the Discovery Yacht and also provide all the activities, helicopters, submarine, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. Then we usually review the itinerary with the whole team on board about two days ahead of departure. In between these two years and two days, we have been in contact with all the agents and the local authorities, preparing where we're going to refuel and get fresh water or provisions.
What is a typical day on board Scenic Eclipse like for you?
It starts before the ship arrives anywhere. I'm on the bridge at least an hour before and we’ll plan the arrival. Then throughout the day, it's about working with my navigational team and the Scenic Eclipse crew. On the expedition side, I’m coordinating with the Discovery Leader and the helicopter and submarine pilots on their activities. I can also be working with Alex, our Executive Chef, Josh, the Cruise Director, or anyone that is involved in activities on board. The day flows very quickly until we depart, and then we review the plan for the next day.
RIGHT: Scenic Eclipse and zodiac
You’ve been sailing for a long time and have experienced many ships. Why do you feel Scenic Eclipse sets the benchmark in ultra-luxury discovery?
The revolutionary idea of Scenic Eclipse is that it's a yacht, like any other private ultra-luxury yacht, but with the state-of-the-art design equipment so we can go further and travel safer than any other yacht . On board, you have incredible technology that you don't find on any other ship and there’s the unique support of all the elements coming together, the fantastic ice strength, the dynamic positioning, the revolutionary stabilizers. It offers much more flexibility and is a really versatile yacht .
What do you do as Captain to ensure that guests can go out on as many discovery excursions as possible?
The first thing is always to try and anticipate problems. In case we can’t go to a place that was on the program, we find a plan B. Though in many cases for us, it's just another plan A, another great solution. In rare cases when the weather is not on our side and there are no other options, guests have lots of activities on board, including lectures and entertainment. Sometimes, it’s a chance for us to look at the next few days and completely change the whole plan.
LEFT: Captain Erwan
Can you tell us more about your team and your relationship with them?
That's one of the things I like about Scenic Eclipse – we have been able to build a real family. I speak every day with each of the department leaders; like the Discover Leader Boris, Staff Captain Maya and Manfred or Daniel, the Hotel Director. I really try to stay connected with everyone on board. My goal is that at the end of their contract, each crew member feels like they have improved, they've provided great service and they're proud of themselves and the yacht. I want them to be proud of what we are achieving together.
How did it feel to be part of the Maritime Masters project?
I was excited to be able to show how it works on The World's First Discovery Yacht TM . It's still very mysterious for many people, how we operate an expedition yacht and the complexity of what's happening on board at all stages. So, the show takes them in the galley, in the garage for the machinery, on the bridge and inside all the operations. I'm happy that this series has enabled us to showcase all these complex elements.
RIGHT: Captain Erwan and team on the bridge, Scenic Eclipse
Were there any special moments for you while filming Maritime Masters?
We weren’t originally scheduled to go to Deception Island in Antarctica, but because of a storm we had to adjust our program. Deception Island is incredible – it’s a caldera and you sail through the narrow entrance so you are right inside it. The TV crew was there, and they filmed the whole entrance, which is a tricky navigation, and they captured the cooperation that we had on the bridge at that time. Knowing that a team who has been on so many ships before was impressed by what we did there in Deception, that will be a great memory for sure.
When you're not on the bridge, where is the spot on Scenic Eclipse that you like to be?
I like to go to the gym. While guests are having dinner, usually around seven or eight o'clock, I go to the gym. Running on the treadmill helps me to schedule the next day and structure the challenges that we can expect; the weather, the planning, etc. But after that, for sure, any of the dining venues is fantastic. Lumière , the French restaurant, is just exceptional.
LEFT: POWER: Gym, Scenic Eclipse
What's next for Scenic Eclipse?
Scenic Eclipse is going to go to Japan for the first time this summer and then cross the Canadian Arctic to reach Europe. This is a great new itinerary for us with Japan and then Norway and all these new destinations. Another exciting element is that we are launching the second Discovery Yacht, Scenic Eclipse II. I will be her Captain for the inaugural season and I'm always excited to discover a new yacht. Outside of the polar regions, Scenic Eclipse II will focus a lot on the Pacific region, Australia, and Indonesia, amazingly beautiful places. I'm excited to go back to Australia particularly, and some of these remote places in Fiji and Polynesia.
Why is sustainability important when it comes to cruise ships and how is Scenic Eclipse addressing the issue?
It's part of the philosophy of the company that, right from the start, the yacht has been built to have one of the lowest carbon footprints in the whole industry. There’s extremely advanced recycling equipment and treatment of exhaust gas. We use only diesel oil, not fuel oil. The hull is extremely fine, so we have exceptional fuel consumption compared to many other yachts, even relatively modern ones of the same size. All the Discovery Team share their respect for the planet and their knowledge of the environment with the guests. There’s a bit of education, but we also like to have fun by really living it and experiencing the beauty of the planet.
RIGHT: Scenic Eclipse, St Matthew Island, Arctic
Do you have a personal motto you live by?
My motto is to " always be on the sunshine side of life" . I make sure that, even when the weather is not great, I can find the positive element of the day. What is so important on Scenic Eclipse is providing happiness to the guests and happiness to the crew also. I want to make sure our guests live unforgettable voyages with us and I want the crew to be proud and happy with what they're offering to the guests on board.
How would you describe a Scenic Eclipse voyage?
It's curiosity, it's a sense of wonder in all aspects. It can be looking at what the planet has to offer that particular day , but also curiosity about the exceptional culinary experiences that we offer on board, about meeting new guests and why not, even meeting the crew on board. At last , I would also say ultra-luxury, of course, and uniqueness. Nobody does what we do. I have 17 years of experience in this business, so I can tell you we are the only ones doing what we do.

ECLIPSE Yacht – Epic $600M Superyacht
The ECLIPSE yacht was once the largest yacht in the world at an impressive length of 162.5 metres (533 ft) but currently ranks in second place after AZZAM.
Though she is known as the billion-dollar yacht, it is estimated that her true value lies between US $500 – $700 million.
The vessel can host 36 guests and is even rumored to feature a state-of-the-art anti-paparazzi system to protect the privacy of those on board.
ECLIPSE yacht interior
The interior (and the exterior) was designed by Terence Disdale , who has become one of the top names in the industry despite having no formal design education.
ECLIPSE was his largest project to date, and he also worked on prominent vessels such as A+ and AL SALAMAH. The interior of ECLIPSE is classically designed in a style that is to be expected from one of the largest yachts in the world.
The upholstery and furniture follow a beige and crème color palette with wooden accents.
The yacht’s 18 cabins can welcome 36 guests as well as 70 crew members, which is an unusually large number even for a vessel of this size.
A large dance floor, several fireplaces, two swimming pools, and two helipads are also included onboard.
The ECLIPSE yacht interior is so large that there is even a cinema dedicated exclusively to crew members. In 2015 the interior of ECLIPSE was refitted by Blohm and Voss in Hamburg.
Specifications
The ECLIPSE yacht is the second-largest yacht in the world with a length of 162.5 meters (533 ft), a beam of 22 meters (72.2 ft), and a draft of 5.9 meters (19.4 ft).
She was built by the German shipyard Blohm & Voss and delivered to her owner in 2010.
Four MTU engines power ECLIPSE and allow her to reach top speeds of 25 knots, although her average cruising speed lies at 22 knots.
Her total volume lies at 13564 tons making her not only one of the longest but also the heaviest yachts in the world.
Like the interior of ECLIPSE, the interior was designed by Terence Disdale. According to rumors, Abramovich fitted her with an anti-paparazzi system that detects electronic light sensors from digital cameras.
However, there is no proof of this, although many newspapers report its existence.
On deck are several swimming pools and jacuzzis, and the aft of the vessel features a sizeable beach club. The yacht has a sleek design that attests to Terence Disdale’s classical style.
ECLIPSE came to fame as being the most expensive yacht ever built at the time for an approximate price of US $500 million.
She has seen further improvements since her purchase by Abramovich in 2010 and it is often widely reported that she is worth US $1.2 – $1.5 billion.

An Up-Close Look At Roman Abramovich's $1 Billion Superyacht
There's rich, and then there's the superyacht rich.
And yachts don't get any more super than Roman Abramovich 's 553-foot long $1 billion plus flagship the Eclipse.
The Eclipse is currently docked at Manhattan's Pier 90 .
The following photos show a bit of what more than $1 billion plus buys in a personal motor yacht these days.
Just south of this public parking lot on the roof of the Pier 90 terminal sits Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's flagship yacht, the "Eclipse."
The Coast Guard referred us to this website where we pinpointed the ship's position and confirmed it hadn't sailed.
536-feet long and styled after military vessels, we simply had to take a look.
The 2010 Eclipse cost up to $1.5 billion and was the world's largest yacht until recently.
The vessel has amenities to rival any ship on the sea — like its own mini submersible, perhaps similar to this— able to dive down 150-feet.
The Eclipse has two helipads.
Bullet proof glass and armor plates wrapping the length of Roman's master suite and the bridge.
And a German built missile defense system.
The ship's also supposed to have a laser defense against paparazzi trying to photograph the yacht's guests, but saw no evidence of the device when we were there.
The Eclipse has three launch boats.
That looked to be stocked with medical supplies and a variety of handheld radios.
From the cruise ship parking lot it felt like we were almost on the Eclipse itself.
But with little chance we'd be invited aboard through the ship's door here ...
... We hoped to find one of the 70 crew members required to sail the Eclipse and see if they'd tell us what ship life was like.
But we found no one interested in talking.
But we certainly didn't feel like paparazzi, or that we'd be lasered, when we were in the parking lot tourists use when they arrive to board their cruise.
From up here the ship was simply stunning and the amount of work required to keep her that way apparent.
The Yacht Report says owning a superyacht costs about 20% of the ship's initial value every year.
But experts believe that Roman probably pays $75 million a year to run the private cruise ship with 24-guest suites.
Looking at the layout of the ship gets us talking about the two swimming pools inside, the disco, cinema, hair salon, and restaurant.
The billionaire's guests would use this door to enter any fore part of the deck.
Perhaps noting where the life rings were as they made their way about the ship.
At 13,000 gross tons the Eclipse is the largest vessel to use a special stabilization system to keep it calm in rough waters while anchored or moving slowly through the sea.
Roman will face a $150,000 tab for parking the Eclipse here while possibly visiting his daughter and her new baby — about $2,000 a day.
A large yacht like the Eclipse can hold over 100,000 gallons of fuel.
That fuel burns at about $3,000 per hour making a five hour cruise each way, about $30,000.
None of those numbers are likely to concern Roman Abramovich, however, who has an estimated net worth of more than $10 billion.
Not much compares to the Eclipse
But check out the equally beautiful Imperial Princess >

Eclipse crowned the winner of the first World Cup of Superyachts
After a gruelling week of competition and over 47,000 votes cast, the 162 metre Blohm+Voss superyacht Eclipse has been crowned the winner of the inaugural World Cup of Superyachts.
The competition began with 16 of the greatest yachts drawn from a hat and the number was swiftly whittled down to a face-off in the grand final between Eclipse and Octopus - two of the most impressive yachts ever built.
- Step on board the 162.5m Eclipse - the second largest superyacht in the world
At 162 metres in length, Eclipse had size on her side as one of the largest yachts in the world (second only to Azzam who she knocked out in the semi-finals). With nine decks and the design talents of the legendary Terence Disdale touching every curve and corner, she is a truly remarkable vessel. But what Octopus may lack in size at a comparably modest 126 metres, she more than makes up for in her pandora's box of toys, from the two helicopters sitting side by side in the hangar to the 10-person Pagoo submarine (not to mention her globetrotting 12,500 nautical mile range.)
The competition was tough and the battle well fought, but it was Eclipse that came out on top after a week of voting across social media and boatinternational.com.

O Captain! Scenic’s Erwan Le Rouzic at the helm of the Scenic Eclipse
Post date: Dec 2 2022
Date: Dec 2 2022
By: Travelweek
Ever wonder what it’s like to captain a luxury expedition ship? In this week’s Take 5, we sit down with Erwan Le Rouzic, Captain of the Scenic Eclipse, referred to by Scenic as the ‘World’s First Discovery Yacht,’ who tells us about the many wonders of life onboard the ship and the incredible destinations it visits.
Can you tell us a little about yourself and your career as a Captain?
“I have been Captain of luxury expedition ships since spring 2006. Almost 10 years ago, I was Captain of a luxury expedition ship chartered by Scenic for a season in Antarctica. It was been, to date, one of my best memories of cruising that region of the world. It was a well-organized cruise with a very friendly atmosphere, and we offered an above-and-beyond experience to our Scenic guests. They loved it, and I loved it, too. So when the Scenic Eclipse was launched, I made sure to be one of her two Captains! I joined the Scenic Eclipse at the christening that took place with Dame Helen Mirren in September 2019 in New York, and since then I have been one of the two Captains at the helm of the ‘World’s First Discovery Yacht’.”
How does the Scenic Eclipse compare to other ships that you’ve helmed?
“Scenic Eclipse is unique – there is no other ship like her. It offers unbeatable diversity in dining experiences on such a small and intimate yacht, not to mention an ultra-luxury experience with butlers and a gigantic, beautiful ESpa. In addition to the exceptional service, we have 20 Discover staff and unique equipment that no other ship offers, like two helicopters and one submarine. We also have activities that no one else offers.
“In addition, Scenic Eclipse has an exceptional dynamic positioning system that allows her to explore remote and protected areas that are restricted to others. With our dynamic positioning, we don’t need to anchor so we can visit islands that have no anchorage due to their deep waters, or are protected areas where anchoring is not allowed. Combined with our zero speed stabilizers, we can safely disembark our guests with our dinghy, even if there is swell. We operate in some unique islands that I wouldn’t have been able to successfully offer if it was not with Scenic Eclipse.”
What are some of your favourite destinations that you’ve sailed to with the Scenic Eclipse?
“Every one of our journeys is curated to offer memorable experiences. Scenic Eclipse has so much equipment that we can offer incredible helicopter flights or submarine dives or many other activities like kayaking, paddleboarding, hiking and zodiac tours, everywhere around the world with our Discovery crew there to inform, enhance and enlighten every aspect of the journey.
“What stands out, of course, are the polar regions. The Scenic Eclipse has been purposely built for expeditions in the Arctic and the Antarctic, where we encounter unique wildlife like polar bears in the Arctic and penguins in the Antarctic. But we bring our concept of Discovery to other regions as well, including Alaska, Europe and Japan, where we’re able to provide activities that no one else can. Flying over feeding humpback whales, or soaring above a glacier in Alaska? It’s just a breathtaking experience.”
As a Scenic Captain, how would you describe the Scenic experience?
“We take pride in really offering a genuine and friendly experience to our guests. They are with us as if they’re onboard their own yacht. They feel at home, with one-on-one personalized and dedicated service. The Scenic Eclipse crew is praised by our guests for their exceptional and friendly service – they look after every detail of their cruise.
“We sincerely are altogether focused on the well-being of our guests and make sure they have a memorable experience at their own pace. It’s Ultra-Luxury combined with Discovery. It’s everyone’s will to mix both to their own preference. I am really proud of the connection between the crew and guests that makes each of our journeys so valuable and unforgettable.”
How would you convince a non-cruiser to finally book their first cruise?
“What’s fantastic about sailing is that you can combine different locations, different countries, different destinations and experiences in various countries in a relatively short time. You unpack your bags once and then you travel and enjoy your vacation at the same time. We take care of everything related to logistics. In addition, with Scenic Eclipse you can combine visiting remote places that you can only discover by sea, with encountering wildlife that would be difficult to approach any other way. Whales sail by the yacht, polar bears in the Arctic, bears in Alaska, penguins and seals in Antarctica…it’s simply unique and unforgettable.”

Charter boat captains booked for solar eclipse; big increase in boat traffic expected
Most area fishing charter boats booked for day of eclipse.
In one month, the Rochester region will be in the direct path of a total solar eclipse. As many as 500,000 people are expected to flood into our region for a front-row seat, and some of them don’t plan to sit on dry land.
Most of the fishing charter boat captains in the area are already booked for April 8, and they have been for months. Their clients are looking to get out on the water, away from any artificial light, to take in the full eclipse as pure as possible.
Captain Kip Mammano of Rochester Sport Fishing didn’t even realize the significance of the date when people started calling looking to book a charter. “We booked the day of the eclipse, last September I believe, we had some people call, and they didn’t show any interest in fishing at all, they just wanted to go out and experience the eclipse,” Mammano tells News10NBC.
It’s not only Mammano’s client who had the idea,
“I thought it was pretty odd but now that it’s getting closer to that date, I guess it’s pretty important,” he says. “My business partner Brandon, he had a call as well to book his boat. There are a select number of captains that will be in the water as it is just starting the season but yes, we’ll be out there for sure.”
First responders who cover Lake Ontario say they’re expecting a big increase in boat traffic for the eclipse.
“November of last year, we started planning for this,” says Monroe County Sheriff’s Lt. Matthew Mackenzie, who leads the marine unit.
It’s not the charter boats they’re worried about. “Our concern is the novice, the weekend boater,” Lt. Mackenzie says, “the boater who doesn’t normally launch their boat this early, hasn’t prepared in advance and they don’t have the attire to go out there and the exposure to the elements.”
Even if it’s sunny and 60 degrees out on land, it’s much cooler and often more rough, the further you get from shore and if something goes wrong. “It is very early in the season, with water temperatures at 39 degrees, the average survivability is about an hour,” explains Sr. Chief Matthew Rosenberg of the U.S. Coast Guard.
That’s why the Coast Guard, the Sheriff’s Department and a number of local fire departments who cover parts of Lake Ontario will have a very visible presence on April 8 th , “we’re going to have a multitude of boats out there, we’ll be covering east, west, south… anywhere you can think of. We have some assets also on standby here locally, EMS, air support, some larger vessels hopefully on scene,” says Sr. Chief Rosenberg.
They’re trying to ensure those who want a unique experience, totality in the middle of a great lake, stay safe. “It’s like a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience something like that, so it could be awesome,” says Captain Mammano.
Most of the local captains News10NBC reached by phone this week are already booked for April 8 or won’t have their boats in that early but Captain Mammano says he has some colleagues who may still have some space: http://www.rochestersportfishing.com/
Fire captain dies after suffering life-threatening burns in house fire, officials say
LEXINGTON, N.C. (Gray News) - A fire captain has died after sustaining injuries during a house fire earlier this week.
According to the Lexington Fire Department , Firefighter Captain Ronnie Metcalf was pronounced dead at the Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Health Medical Center in Winston-Salem on Friday.
City officials said Metcalf’s death comes days after sustaining life-threatening burn wounds on 60 percent of his body while responding to a house fire call on early Tuesday morning.
Fire crews responded to a home just after midnight on Tuesday. When they arrived, firefighters said flames and smoke were seen coming from the back of the house.
Crews went inside to extinguish the fire, but a short time later they were ordered to evacuate the building due to structure issues.
Fire officials said crews evacuated but reported a firefighter missing.
Search teams reentered the building and located Metcalf.
The captain was pulled from the home and treated by emergency crews at the scene for burn injuries before being transported by helicopter to the medical center.
Metcalf was a father, husband, and a 19-year veteran with the Lexington Fire Department. He was also a member of the Hillside Park Baptist Church.
The community has rallied around Metcalf, initiating a fundraiser to assist his family with medical expenses.
The cause of the house fire currently remains under investigation.

Catching the eclipse: Fishing charters nearly booked for historic event
I RONDEQUOIT, N.Y. (WROC) – Some spectators will want to witness the total solar eclipse by land, but others are taking to the water.
Many fishing charters in our area have been well-booked already. News 8’s Natalie Kucko stopped by Rochester Sport Fishing in Irondequoit for a look at how they’re gearing up.
“I got a call last September to book this day. People from out of town, they really want to experience something totally different. So, they’re going to get out on the lake, something that’s out of the norm,” said Captain Kip Mammano, owner of Rochester Sport Fishing.
Captain Kip’s charter business has been booked ever since that call a year ago. However, his customers don’t plan to catch any fish. Instead, they plan to catch the eclipse on Lake Ontario, without any articificial light.
Even though the traffic may not be as heavy on the water, Captain Kip and his partner, Capt. Brandon White, say they’re ready for anything.
“Obviously, there’s going to be a lot of boats out there. So, you’re going to be fighting for potentially for the best spot,” said Capt. Brandon.
With increased boat traffic expected, including the potential for inexperienced boaters, first responders are ramping up their efforts.
It means an early start to the season. However, for charters that can manage, they’re taking advantage. Fingers crossed for the forecast, they say.
“I think a lot of people don’t know it’s an option. That’s the main thing,” said Capt. Kip.
“It’s making sure you have the potential for rain, wind, and just biting cold air in general. We could get a 60 or 70 degree day, but we also could get a 30 or 40 degree day,” said Capt. Brandon.
It’s not too late to experience the eclipse this way. Capt. Kip says some of his colleagues with other charters are still booking boats for April 8.

CAPTAIN JACO PIETERSE: Captain Jacobus Pieterse spent his childhood growing up grew up along the ocean and in the city in his native South Africa. He originally hails from Empangeni, which is a city in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, approximately 157 kilometers north of Durban, set in a hill countryside, overlooking a flat coastal plain and the major harbour town of Richards Bay which is 16 kilometers away, A very friendly, easy going and accessible person, everyone just calls him JACO (pronounced Yako). Besides swimming, Jaco excelled at rugby and boxing as a youth. His love of the water moved him on to a yachting career, he now has 30 years of experience on the water, from chartering, diving, and delivering yachts, both power and sail. Jaco is an easy to talk to person, who has a sense of adventure and relishes exploring new places. He spent a lot of time cruising the Indian Ocean, which he loves for its vast unspoiled areas. He arrived to Saint Maarten about 6 years ago and has been cruising the local waters there ever since. The area has become a home of sorts, and Jaco has designed interesting venues for all types of guests, depending on what they want to do, be it intensive watersports, horse back riding, touring, or just quiet pristine places to relax. He feels the service on board should tailor to the guest’s preferences. From a friendly casual atmosphere to a refined discreet silver service, Jaco will deliver what fits! His motto is “Be honest and real to yourself and others”. His straightforward enthusiasm and attention to details ensures an excellent charter on board Yacht Eclipse! CHEF - Alison Williams - profile to follow shortly CHIEF MATE - MARCO DE VILLIERS: Marco is from Welkom, South Africa. He and his 2 brothers spent time on the farm and in the city growing up. As a child Marco pursued soccer and motor cross, and enjoyed a lot of fishing. In 2018 Marco decided it was time to see more of the world, and he followed his curiosity and love of the ocean to begin sailing. He decided he really liked yachts and watersports and has been working aboard various vessels ever since. His travels introduced him to one of his favorite locations, The Bahamas. There he was able to hone his yacht and water based skills and learn more of the beautiful underwater world. Besides his love of the ocean, Marco is a musician and DJ, Besides being there to assist in watersports and adventure, he will see that the music and fun is just right for guests aboard. He is a friendly, hardworking, and helpful part of the Eclipse crew! His motto is the “Life is amazing and is what it should be!” CHIEF STEWARDESS - MERUGIA VELDKAMP: Marugia is from The Netherlands. An adventurous soul, she spent time in Australia acquiring skills that have been a great aid to her job on board Eclipse. She has been waitress, hostess, barista, and bartender and also worked as a housekeeper and a social counselor. Some of her favorite activities are water sports, singing and Salsa dancing! But, do not let that sweet demeanor fool you, as this athletic young lady is also a black belt in Tae Kwon Do! Marugia started working on Eclipse as the second stewardess, but her job performance and dedication now have her in the position of Chief Stewardess. She always looks forward to hosting and serving the guests aboard! 2ND STEWARDESS - STEPHANIE Eclipse normally charters with 6 crew, which includes the tender Captain, and all 6 crew sleep in 3 crew cabins. For charters with smaller groups of 5 or less, there will be 5 crew as the second stewardess will not be required.

30 July – 7th August 2022
Note from Debra- broker: As you probably know, they didn’t spend much time aboard, as that was the arrangement. However, Mr. G’s PA advised me they were very happy with all the assistance Captain Jaco and his team gave them with land support, tender transfers, handling water toys, etc. I think they would consider chartering ECLIPSE again when they return to St. Barths. Hopefully next time, the seas cooperate more to allow them to use the yacht for transfers and some day trips around the islands.

I just wanted to send this note of thanks on behalf of Allison and myself to the whole Eclipse Team. Our trip with you and your crew in St. Barth was completely amazing, including wonderful service from a crew who was very engaged and super-fun to be around. I certainly hope we are able to do this again at some point. This was our first trip to St. Barth and we really appreciate all you and the crew did to make it special, and hilariously FUN! Walker and Allison
10 day charter in January 2021 in St Barths
Thank you Captain Willem, Chef Yvonne, and the rest of the wonderful crew on M/Y Eclipse! Your hard work and focus on detail, along with your warm and caring spirits helped make our vacation to St Barths and St Martin special and magical! We can’t wait to return! We have had many vacations on boats in the Caribbean, and this was by far the best! The food was fantastic - and perfect according to our several dietary restrictions - varied, tasty, interesting! There was always a helping hand, and you ensured we could do everything that we asked to do! Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of our hearts! Mike and Kristen
Note from Broker: I think they will book again because the clients say they are excellent. these clients have been on 20 trips with me or so, on some really nice boats, and this was their favorite, so good for the crew :)
