The brand’s new flagship marks its entry into a new design and manufacturing era.

Craftsmanship and expertise, generated over more than 30 years of spearheading experience, combine with an inborn thrust towards innovative design, technology and aesthetics, officially marking the brand’s entry into the superyacht sector: it is the launch of Pershing 140 , the brand’s new flagship and the first Pershing to be manufactured in aluminium.

A result of the collaboration between architect Fulvio De Simoni, the Ferretti Group Product Strategy Committee (led by engineer Piero Ferrari), and the Group’s Engineering Department, the new 140-foot yacht is the first Pershing manufactured at the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona. Developed into 3 spacious decks, the new flagship emanates prowess on water, showcasing the “thrill” that only Pershing can offer.

The project’s philosophy is based on the will to maintain Pershing’s unequalled performance, albeit with different class weights and dimensions: those of a superyacht. The hull platform was specifically designed for high performance, featuring excellent hydrodynamic capabilities at high speeds and the propulsion of 4 MTU 16V2000 M96L engines, each of 2,600 HP, thus achieving the target of taking the first 43.30-metre LOA Pershing superyacht to a top speed of 38 knots.

But Pershing 140 is not only the brand’s first superyacht to boast outstanding performance; it is also the first to feature a raised cockpit directly connected to the sun deck; the first to have an owner-dedicated area on the main deck and the first to maximise the enjoyability of all the decks and outdoor areas. This achievement was made possible by joining them all into a beach club area, which becomes expandable thanks to three fold-out sides.

Stylistically, the new flagship stands out for its sleek lines, emblematic of the brand’s sporty and competitive character. This feature is further enhanced by the on-demand application of a steel grid on the bow. Moreover, it combines design innovations with some of the brand’s most iconic details, such as the two lateral wings, that are integrated into its superstructure and then connected at the start of the walkways to the gunwale. The prow, which is instead decidedly contemporary in design, contributes to enhance the model’s aerodynamics. The whole area of the bow moorings is concealed, operated with an automatic up/down mechanism to maintain the streamlined design aesthetic.

Turning now to the interior, Pershing 140 owners can design their superyacht assisted by the designers of the Studio Fulvio De Simoni Firm and by the Project Architects of the Superyacht Yard of Ferretti Group. The entire interior design is tailored to mirror the owner’s style, by making additions to or modifying the layout options offered by the shipyard.

MAIN DECK The new Pershing 140 features an original layout of the aft area, configured as a raised cockpit that becomes a mezzanine level: this creates a large waterside space that rises from the water up to the sun deck and joins together the entire aft section. This revolutionary design produces a vast waterside beach club, entirely accessible and furnishable with stools, chairs and freestanding pieces. The garage can accommodate both a Williams 565 tender and a jet ski. Launching and hauling operations are carried out by opening the two side hatches on the port side.

Around the cockpit, the mezzanine assures greater privacy: a first sunbathing area protects the second cockpit lounge against intrusive looks. The latter is furnished with a table seating 10 people that can be reached by walking down a few steps towards the bow, and it is protected on the sides by large glass panels installed on the topsides. Designed to guarantee utmost comfort, this spatial solution enables the owner to enjoy an area that possesses all the benefits of sitting in an outdoors but private place, and facilitates the passage of guests, who can easily walk across outdoor areas or walk on the main deck and enter the saloon after passing through the lounge.

After walking through the glass door into the cockpit, you access an open space flooded with natural light and organised into two areas: first the living area, followed by the dining area. The central area of the main deck leads to the crew quarters on one side and to the owner’s suite on the other side. On the left-hand side, a passageway ushers into the cockpit or into the day toilet. This area also hosts the master cabin. Still on the left-hand side, a door placed on the external walkway opens onto the stairs leading down to the area below decks, which accommodates the kitchen and the crew quarters. On the opposite side, walking towards the bow, you first come to a hallway where stairs lead down to the guest suites. Proceeding further, you enter the owner’s quarters: a grand full beam owner’s private suite, that the owner can modify and decorate at will. Yard-fitted with a double bed, a walk-in closet on the left-hand side and a parlor on the right, it enjoys a magnificent view. The large bathroom, fitted with a shower separated from the bathtub, as well as the toilet and bidet on the two topsides, is located at the head of the bow. On the first unit, the owner has decided to install an entertainment room, eliminating the bed to make room for sofas and seats, tables and a big TV screen.

LOWER DECK The space below decks accommodates four comfortable guest suites, of which 2 have double beds and 2 have twin beds, all with their own closet and en suite bathroom. Maximum comfort is also given to the crew area: after walking through a lobby, the staff can access a large kitchen on the left, separated from the dinette by a door on the right and, proceeding towards the bow, there are three bunk-bed bedrooms, all with a private bathroom. From the lobby, the crew can also have direct access to the engine room and to the garage.

SUNDECK AND BOW AREA The upper deck of the Pershing 140 is perfectly in line with the overall privacy assured to the central part, which is protected by an aluminium hard-top. Conceived as a spacious panoramic terrace, it is entirely furnishable with freestanding pieces, and it can be accessed by walking up from the mezzanine deck or from the raised cockpit. The latter is connected to the second control station, in case of wanting to steer the flagship from the outside. Perfect for entertaining, the upper deck also hosts a bar and grill area, a total-relaxation area with a sun pad and, exclusively on the first unit, a projector and screen (both removable) and fixed loudspeakers. The ample forward outdoor spaces, only accessible through the lateral walkways, offer an area with a large sun pad just before a full-fledged concealed lounge equipped with a Jacuzzi, an inset dinette with two seats, a table and a sunbathing area. This area is only revealed when the yacht is anchored or moored while, during navigation, it is covered by a sliding platform, thus contributing to the streamlined sleekness of the external lines. The arrangement of this private area, as well as many others, can be completely tailored to the owner’s tastes.

PROPULSION The hull number one of Pershing 140 installs four MTU 16 V 2000 M96L engines, each with 2,600 HP. The hydro-jet propulsion assures excellent performance levels, both at cruising and maximum speed, which can achieve 35 knots and 38 knots respectively. Consistent with the DNA of the Pershing range, the domotics and electronic systems are all state-of-the-art. And, in line with Ferretti Group’s tradition of making high performance its core value, while also ensuring maximum wellbeing and relaxation, the new 140-footer is equipped with 3 Seakeeper 35 to assure top comfort also at anchor, after experiencing a day marked by the “thrill” that only a Pershing can give.

Pershing 8X review: Italian stallion strikes a fine balance between space and speed

  • The Pershing 8X achieved a top speed of 48.3 knots on test

Deep-vee hull still delivers high cornering speeds and dramatic angles of lean

The 8X’s extra beam is apparent from the spacious cockpit and sidedecks. Note how the glass saloon doors drop into the deck

Long overhang and tall coamings makes for a well-protected cockpit

  • No sign of compromise in the luxurious saloon and dining area
  • Visibility is good - including through the sunroof in hard turns!
  • It has the length-beam ratio you would expect in a flybridge cruiser, with 5,276hp in its engineroom. This is not normal
  • Elegant flybridge stairs are imtegrated into the curved pillar supports

Compact flybridge sits in a recess to lower its visual impact

  • Full beam owner’s cabin makes the most of the extra width
  • Ensuite bathroom is a temple of modern luxury
  • The VIP suite’s location in the bow necessitates quite a tall bed
  • The VIP bathroom
  • One of the two twin guest cabins boasting wider beds and more space between them

Luxury and engine power both demand acres of space, but performance boats need to be slender. Can Pershing’s latest creation pull off the ultimate spatial compromise?

The proof of the Pershing is in the handling. Few shipyards set quite so much store in their boats’ ability to corner with the kind of competence that raises the hairs on the back of your neck.

The trouble is, reputations can be lost as well as gained: just one new model whose talents are judged to be less than sparkling can undo all the respect so hard-won by its predecessors.

Pershing is not unique in this, of course. But it is unique in its efforts to yoke together high-tech sportsboat speed and handling with high-end Italian luxury. And it’s a task that is not getting any easier.

Pershing-8X-yacht-test-review-running-shot

In its new Pershing 8X, the Ancona shipyard has faced up to the classic quandary that has exercised every yacht designer who has ever tried to get to grips with the problem of how to make a fast yacht luxurious – and vice versa.

Luxury means comfort, and comfort requires space. Performance means power, and power – big engines, big tanks – needs space too. But you can’t just make a hull that’s voluminous enough to accommodate all these conflicting demands, because performance hulls have to be slender, and high-volume hulls don’t handle.

Or so they say – it seems that Pershing’s designers now beg to differ. The Pershing 82 , which this new model seems destined to replace in the product range, was 18ft 1in (5.50m) in the beam. The 8X is a couple of feet longer but a full 14in wider, at 19ft 3in (5.86m).

The Pershing 9X may be as fast and fabulous as ever but it now has the polished manners to match

Pershing 7X yacht tour: This $3.2m sportscruiser can do 50 knots flat-out

That’s the sort of length-beam ratio you would expect to find in a family flybridge cruiser – except the Pershing 8X packs 5,276hp in its engineroom and has a pair of Top System surface drives sticking out at the back. This is not normal.

Size matters

The idea, of course, is to make the accommodation areas larger and more luxurious. The extra width is used to good effect on the main deck, where the saloon feels nice and wide even without compromising the side decks, as happened on the Pershing 82.

Perhaps the most spectacular improvement, however, is the cunningly concealed flybridge companionway inside that curved carbon coaming on the port side. The 82’s arrangement – a set of folding steps that dropped down from the deckhead – was less alliterative as well as less convenient.

Pershing-8X-yacht-test-review-cockpit-stairs

Down below, the obvious place to look for extra width is in the gaps between the berths in the twin guest cabins. The berths themselves are also wider, as well as longer, and it’s the same story in the VIP and master suites . Headroom has been raised too.

The improved master suite layout in the Pershing 8X, making proper use of the visual qualities of an open, full-beam cabin, adds significantly to the sense of space on the lower deck. Like its predecessor, the 8X is available with a choice of one or two twin-berth guest cabins.

Significant extra width has the potential to create significant extra weight, which was obviously not an option in this case: the Pershing 8X simply had to perform at least as well as the 82, and there was no more horsepower available in the MTU 2000 series footprint.

Pershing-8X-yacht-test-review-engine-room

So the superstructure is made entirely of lightweight carbon fibre, the mouldings are created from vacuum-infused epoxy resin instead of vinylester, and although a substantially bigger boat it comes out just 700kg heavier.

The hull form is a constant-deadrise, 20° deep-V – similar to the 82’s, with most of the extra beam going into wide chine flats that fill out amidships and carry on aft. So, in theory at least, the Pershing 8X will have the incisive seakeeping of a capable offshore boat , ironing out the chop, while extra lift from the broad chines should help with straight-line speed at the expense, perhaps, of cornering precision.

We put theory into practice on a balmy spring day off Fano, on the Italian Adriatic coast not far from Pershing’s Ancona shipyard. The new-generation 8X is loaded with electronic aids.

Pershing-8X-yacht-test-review-upper-helm

Surface-drive boats are often a handful for the helmsman – the racing boats for which they were originally designed had a two-person crew – and modern technology can ease the workload for leisure users, ensuring that drive trim is optimised for best speed and fuel consumption.

For the 8X, Pershing has worked with Xenta and Top System to produce a single-control interface that allows for joystick control at speeds up to 42 knots, automatic trim for the flaps and drive legs, and an automatic autopilot system that holds the heading without the need to engage the boat’s actual autopilot.

It works extremely well. So does the new hull shape. Pershing’s engineers explained that the extra lift from the chines helps not just with top speed, but also at transitional speeds between displacement and planing.

Pershing-8X-yacht-test-review-aerial-view

This phase of performance can be rather vague on surface-drive boats: a slight change in hull attitude or leg trim making a disproportionate contribution to boat speed, as the drives rise into thinner water, the props spin more quickly, and engine revs increase. You need to have your wits about you.

Plane sailing

On the Pershing 8X, this acceleration phase felt more predictable, although admittedly our speed still more than doubled between 1,500 and 2,000rpm. One tangible benefit of the extra lift is in low-speed planing. The boat was quite happy at 25 knots and 1,600rpm, although you won’t find that sweet spot going up the rev range. You have to decelerate to get there. All surface-drive boats have their idiosyncrasies.

With 400 more horsepower than its predecessor, slightly more weight and a lot more dynamic lift, our test 8X clocked an impressive two-way average of 48.3 knots in our sea trial – nearly two knots better than the similarly-loaded Pershing 82 we tested in 2012.

Pershing-8X-yacht-test-review-cockpit-aft

On a calm sea it was difficult to judge the quality of its seakeeping, but there were some firmer than expected impacts as we charged through our own wake at high speeds, which were probably down to those broad chines.

When it came to the boat’s driving experience, the 8X can certainly provide the superbly dramatic angles of heel in hard turns that Pershing aficionados love so much, when you have to look through the sunroof to see where you’re going.

It didn’t, perhaps, display quite the same razor-sharp tracking that has made these boats a byword for brilliant handling – but if you weren’t looking for flaws I doubt whether you’d notice any. This boat is powerful, fast and huge fun to drive.

It goes. It handles. And in spite of its unusually wide beam, and its uncharacteristically generous internal volume, it still feels like a proper Pershing where it counts – out at sea. With the 8X, the shipyard’s reputation is safe.

With two decks and a sportbridge, the GTX80 has a sprawling open layout that ensures guests feel connected to the sea. The main deck salon, for instance, has glazing that extends below the lateral walkways to ensure a view of the water even from the sofas. Another new development in the nearly full-beam saloon is the hybrid galley-bar, which connects the indoor lounge with the outdoor cockpit.

Pershing GTX80 Yacht

As for accommodation, the yacht is equipped with four comfy cabins that can sleep up to eight guests. It also has discreetly hidden crew quarters that can sleep two. The guest cabins are clad from top to bottom in sky-blue leather paneling and dotted with sculptural furniture, while the adjoining bathrooms are fitted with metallic lacquered panels. This contrast of finishes continues throughout the rest of the interior, with leather sofas in warm hues and cozy woods juxtaposing the colder metallic accents. Integrated lighting doubles as another striking design feature.

The exterior is nothing to sneeze at, either. The nifty stern platform can be moved to three different positions using the dual linear lift function: It can be raised to expand the aft living area, lowered to launch tenders, or left in the default position to function as a waterside lounge. At the opposite end, the foredeck is equipped with an oversized sun pad. To top it off, the sundeck spans nearly 250 square feet and is 60 percent larger than the category average.

Pershing Yachts

Based in Mondolfo, Italy, luxury yacht builder Pershing builds high performance composite motor yachts from 14.24 to 35 metres in length. Pershing is owned by major Italian boat-building company Ferretti Group .

History of Pershing Yachts

Luxury yacht builder Pershing was founded in 1981 by Italian entrepreneurs Tilli Antonelli, Fausto Filippetti and Giuliano Onori, who established the shipyard as Cantiere Navale dell’Adriatico. In 1985, the founders collaborated with yacht designer Fulvio De Simone on their first performance luxury motor yacht model, the Pershing 45 . This fast motor yacht launched the Pershing luxury yacht range, named after the Pershing missile to denote its high-performance design concept. Luxury yacht builder Pershing joined the Ferretti Group in 1998, and the size of the Pershing luxury performance yachts continued to grow. In 2012, the Chinese Shandong Heavy Industry Group – Weichai Group acquired a 75 per cent interest in the Ferretti Group, including luxury yacht builder Pershing.

Meet the Pershing 7X

  • By Victor Tan
  • Updated: February 27, 2020

Pershing 7X

The Pershing Yachts 7X has launched, rounding out the builder’s X series, which also includes the 5X , 8X and 9X .

Designed by Fulvio De Simoni and the Piero Ferrari-led Ferretti Group, Pershing says its Generation X yachts are focused on design, technology, performance and the use of ultra-lightweight materials. The 70-foot 7X is constructed primarily of carbon fiber.

When it comes to design, the yacht’s 17-foot, 6-inch beam helps create real estate for three staterooms belowdecks: a full-beam master stateroom, a starboard-side guest stateroom with twins and a forepeak VIP stateroom, each with en suite heads. The twin-berth stateroom can be replaced by L-shaped seating. Crew quarters are aft of the master and forward of the engine room. Average headroom belowdecks is around 6 feet, 6 inches.

Pershing 7X

The two-seat, Poltrona Frau leather helm seats are on the main deck to starboard with an L-shaped settee abaft and to port. The settee surrounds a high-low table that also extends to accommodate eight guests for dinner. Flanking the helm are electrically-operated. Forward is the structure-free windshield offering unobstructed views. There is a garage aft on the main deck that’s capable of fitting an 11-foot, 3-inch tender.

The helm on Hull No. 1 has two 19-inch multifunction displays in a dashboard with carbon-fiber control panels. Joysticks and levers flank the captain’s seat.

Pershing 7X

At a cruising speed of 42 knots, Pershing says the 7X can travel for 300 nautical miles. Top speed? The Italian manufacturer claims 50 knots. Twin 1,800 hp MAN V12 diesels are matched to Top System P85X surface drives.

The 7X is also equipped with two Seakeeper NG6 gyroscopic stabilizers.

The biggest thrill: Pershing launches the first unit of its new flagship Pershing 140.

The wait is over: the first aluminium superyacht by Pershing has hit the water at Ancona's Super Yacht Yard on 23 February. Ancona, 27 February 2019 – Ever a pioneer in terms of visionary design, technological innovation and nautical trend-setting, Pershing has just ushered in a new era in its celebrated history of yacht-building excellence. The milestone moment took place at the innovative Super Yacht Yard in Ancona, which witnessed the launch of the first unit of Pershing 140, the brand's new flagship and the first aluminium superyacht made by Pershing. Born from a collaboration between architect Fulvio De Simoni, the Ferretti Group Product Strategy Committee led by engineer Piero Ferrari, and the Group's Engineering Department, the new 140-footer (LOA 43,3m) is the first Pershing to be produced at the Ancona Superyacht Yard, a Ferretti Group facility specialized in building super and mega yachts above 40 metres, in both steel or aluminium. Its aggressive profile blends novel design elements with iconic details that reveal a continuity with the most recent models, such as the two lateral wings integrated into the superstructure and connected to the gunwale at the start of the walkways. Even before unleashing its power on the waves, the new Pershing 140 stands out for the innovative layout of the aft area, which features a raised cockpit that effectively becomes a mezzanine level: this creates a vast sea-facing space that rises from the water up to the sun deck, joining together the yacht's entire aft section. The forward area too offers roomy and innovative relaxation spaces, while the upper deck – seamlessly integrated into the general profile – is a spacious panoramic terrace that may be entirely furnished with free-standing pieces. The main deck includes a lounge with bar and dining area as well as an ample private entertainment area. Below decks, finally, are 4 suites designed for privacy and comfort, including two VIPs with king-size bed and two twins with single beds. “Anyone who's sailed on a Pershing is familiar with the adrenaline rush that kicks in with every turn: it is a unique feeling, akin to flying through the waves, that deserves to be experienced in the utmost comfort. And this new flagship embodies the highest expression of the “Pershing thrill”. A natural evolution of the brand's range, the Pershing 140 is an engineering masterpiece that combines the drive for innovation, a core element of the brand's DNA, with the wealth of know-how and skills developed over the past 30 years. The launch of the first unit marks a landmark moment for the history of Pershing and the commercial strategy of Ferretti Group” said Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi. The superyacht will then head for Hong Kong, its final destination, and will be officially presented to the public in the coming months.

  4. Pershing 140 Review

The first Pershing 115, four years later, was a massive gamble for the shipyard—he bought that one too. The 140 is the biggest, most powerful and riskiest Pershing yet—a four-engine, aluminum monster with jet drives and an unfolding beach club, a snub nose and a forward relaxation area with sunbeds and a hot tub hidden beneath heavy electric-hydraulic hatches.

  12. Pershing 8X review: Italian stallion strikes a fine balance between

On the Pershing 8X, this acceleration phase felt more predictable, although admittedly our speed still more than doubled between 1,500 and 2,000rpm. One tangible benefit of the extra lift is in low-speed planing. The boat was quite happy at 25 knots and 1,600rpm, although you won't find that sweet spot going up the rev range.
