Diamond Racing #11

Diamond racing powerboat team, latest news, the race to race at round 3 this weekend.

The Diamond Racing Powerboat Team heads to the third and final round of the Australian Formula Powerboat Grand Prix Series this weekend, 21 & 22 April at Lake Mulwala, Yarrawonga.

Once again a strong field of Formula 2 drivers have entered for the final round with anyone capable of pulling off a race win in the three final races of the season.

Simon Troy (888 Racing) currently heads the championship table ahead of Adam Breen (Cracka Racing) and Ewan Bricker (TBR).

After claiming a well earned race win at Round 2, Diamond Racing driver, Scott currently sits in forth position.   Sadly the final race at Round 2 almost brought his series appearances to an end after his equipment was badly damaged in a dramatic accident.

With an opportunity to end on the podium at seasons end along with a placing in the Australian championship the team decided to push ahead and began "The Race to Race" at the final round.

Scott and his lead mechanic Mark Jakins (Outboard Technical Services) returned to their home state of Tasmania to rectify any possible engine issues. In the meantime the damaged boat and equipment  was taken to the central coast of New South Wales where sponsor Gavin Simmons (Symmons Landscaping) along with the much valued assistance of fellow powerboat races, Bob Beasley, John Fowler and others, stripped the boat, ready for transport further north to the Coffs Coast.

A quick call was made to John and Matt of JT Fibreglass Specialists who operate at Woolgoolga on the Mid North of NSW shortly after the incident.

After explaining the damage at what may be required and asking if they could help in the short time frame available they immediately offered to assist and make it happen.

Working some overtime and using the very latest in composite materials and techniques they managed to have all the repairs along with some other additional maintenance issues completed in just 10 days.

Following this the hull was returned to the central coast where it is being refitted. A new rear cowling was also required and thanks to Craig Simmons it should be in place before the boat departs in its transporter to Yarrawonga this Thursday.

Final preparations will not be completed until Scott and Mark arrive at Yarrawonga from Tasmania on Friday.

Check for updates this weekend on our Facebook page.

Scott Cleary

Scott Cleary is one of a number of young male and female powerboat drivers competing around Australia whose talents are helping to lift the profile of this fast, colourful and thrilling sport to new heights. Scott and others like Brock Cohen, Grant Trask and Corey Dovall are bringing new followers to the sport and attracting strong media attention.

Scott is carrying on a strong family boating tradition that reaches back four generations.  He has already proved he has the talent to succeed by winning Round 1 of the 2012/13 Australian Formula 2 Grand Prix Powerboat  Series in dominating fashion. He continued to lead the series until his boat was completely destroyed in a spectacular two boat crash and flip at Grafton during Round 3.

Since then the team has undergone a rebuilding process with the support of  major sponsors, Simmons Landscaping - Central Coast, Outboard Technical Services - Hobart, Toleman & Co Jewellers - Coffs Harbour & Diamond World Jewellers - Tasmania.

During 2017 Scott competed at a couple of AFPGP events  in preparation for the following season. He quickly established himself as a front runner by winning a race at the final meeting of the season at Grafton.

Scott now believes his Diamond Racing Powerboat Team has the boats, equipment and support to challenge for the 2018 Australian Formula 2 Grand Prix Series Championship.

Established early 1970 in Tasmania, Diamond Racing is one of Australia's oldest powerboat racing teams.

The team has won numerous club, state and Australian championships along with setting a number of APBA speed records.

The Australian Power Boat Association is the recognised national sporting organisation for the sport of power boat racing in Australia, affiliated with the Union International Motonautique . The UIM is the international governing body of power boating, recognised by the  International Olympic Committee .

The Queensland State Council is responsible for administering power boat racing in Queensland and reports to the national body.  This includes affiliating clubs, sanctioning race meetings and issuing race licences throughout Queensland.  The state council consists of the member clubs and executive officers .

Primarily, power boat racing in Queensland focusses on circuit racing and offshore racing.  Circuit racing classes range from the Formula Future J1 class for drivers aged from eight years old and powered by engines up to six horsepower right up to the Unlimited Outboard, Unlimited Hydroplane and Unlimited Displacement classes.  Offshore classes start with the Supercat 400 hp class, with boats usually powered by twin 200 horsepower outboard engines through to the Supercat Extreme class with engines up to 1,500 horsepower or more.

While the glamour and excitement of the grand prix, offshore and blown alcohol displacement (BAD) boats attract the bulk of the media attention, power boat racing is one of the most affordable forms of motorsport available and there is a class and level of competition to suit almost any budget.  Race days range from low-key club racing up to championship events.   Contact us or contact a club near you to find out more about how you and your family can join in the fun!
