Exterior design

One-third of the Oceanis 51.1’s hull is now stepped. In addition to the aesthetics of this flared shape, the new hull creates additional interior space, which in turn allows for exciting new layouts below. Her sleek, modern lines will turn heads in every harbor, while her deck and cockpit setup, replete with relaxation and lounging areas, offers a delightful blend of comfort and safety, both at sea and at anchor.

Interior Design

Large portholes suffuse the elegant Nauta Design interior with light, creating a wonderfully warm atmosphere below, and offering incomparable views whether you are sitting or standing. An elegant palette of woods and upholsteries guarantees your tastes are reflected, and ensure your boat will always feel like home no matter where it is in the world.

RENEWAL OF THE CRUISING YACHT

The Oceanis 51.1 is spacious, elegant, cleverly designed, and fast.

The furling mast, self-tailing jib, and all the halyards and sheets on the standard model are brought back to a single winch at each of the helm stations, making her simple and easy to sail. As for harbor maneuvering, Dock & Go technology simplifies everything.  

THE HEIGHT OF COMFORT

The architectural choices that stand out on the Oceanis 51.1 are reflected in her habitability and an incredible amount of space. Inside, the owner cabin has an en-suite shower room and toilet, and a 1.6 m wide island bed.  The fully-fitted U-shaped galley has many convenient features. Truly a space to enjoy together, it is as pleasant to use under sail as it is at anchor.

Fitted with an extra-long carbon or aluminium mast, the Oceanis 51.1 First Line has up to 35% additional sail area in high-tech materials. The boat has a 2.8 m lead bulb keel in this high-performance configuration. This reduces weight and hydrodynamic drag. To complete this version, a composite steering wheel, top-of-the-range deck fittings, and boomsprit marry speed and cruising and promise an all new experience.

With a load capacity far greater than that of the Outremer 45, this best-selling family boat from the Outremer range, twice awarded European Yacht of the Year and Boat of the Year in the United States, is the benchmark cruising catamaran for families sailing around the world. Powerful yet easy, with unequaled resilience, it has proven itself on all the seas of the globe.

A perfectly protected and comfortable cockpit

The rigid bimini allows the whole cockpit to be protected and to completely isolate external elements thanks to protective covers. The U-shaped cockpit is particularly well protected, especially for young children. The cockpit table, in two parts, is easy to install, but it can also be transformed into a bed while keeping a table that can be used for meals on the side.

A customizable sail plan

You will enjoy a large choice of sails and rig: self-tacking solent, genoa, staysail, carbon or aluminum mast, fixed or rotating. To better adapt to your tastes and preferences, your sail plan can also be adapted! For sailors who want to favor ease of handling and simplicity, the self-tacking solent and a downwind gennaker will allow you to go to the far side of the world with the greatest of ease. Demanding sailors may prefer a genoa combined with a staysail, a gennaker or even a spinnaker. To lower the center of gravity and further improve performance in light airs, a carbon mast, possibly a rotating mast, is a good choice.

A comfortable payload

The hull is designed to accommodate all the comfort elements needed for blue water cruising. A beautiful tender, a watermaker, a washing machine, of course, but with more than 3 tons of possible payload, you can also add a generator, air conditioning, a dive compressor or heating, and beyond that, bikes, surfboards and paddleboards will keep you busy at stopovers, and children will be able to take all their favorite toys with them…

The new Swan 51 offers design and practical solutions that make the yacht comfortable and easy to sail from coastal waters to long offshore passages. The Swan 51 also features a mast which has been moved more to the centre of the yacht, further enhancing balance.

Ultimately, like all Swans, the 51 is a no-compromise sailing yacht, a pure sailor, more a sportscar than a limousine. It is designed to be reactive to steer and responsive to sail adjustments, bringing the sensations of sailing alive.

The deck on any yacht is its most important area, either for performance racing or relaxed and comfortable cruising, and Swan has always prided itself on its attention to detail with a deck optimised for efficient, safe and enjoyable sailing.

As well as incorporating all of these core components, the Swan 51 offers three different configurations of deck and sail plans, allowing owners to set their yacht up to meet their specific needs and plans.

As with other models across the Swan range, every option across all configurations can be mixed and matched to meet owners’ requirements.

Exterior Designer

Lucio micheletti.

A skilful combination of traditional styling and taut forms, an interplay of materials that creates a lively chiaroscuro with a marked dynamic quality (what the architect Micheletti calls ‘quayside speed’). The cockpit offers the typical three-area division that characterises all Swans. The front area, close to the deckhouse and protected by a sprayhood and a bimini top (a retractable model with rigid structure is optional), is dedicated to guests.

The interior designer

A spacious main saloon greets you descending the main companionway with its clear feeling of space and volume. With natural light from numerous apertures, the C-shaped sofa offers a welcoming space.

The chart table and main table locations, as well as seating and storage areas, can be configured around a range of options to suit owner’s preferences.

The galley offers domestic-level amenities and appliances as required.

A three-cabin interior layout features a spacious owner’s cabin forward with private head and shower space. VIP and guest cabins facilities, with a common head and shower, are located aft. Styling and finishing, in wood, fabrics and leather, is offered in a variety of moods created by interior designer Misa Poggi: Swan Soul, Scandi Vision, Blue Genoa and Velvet Vibe.

Timeless Classic

The yacht is fitted with natural materials such as linen, cotton and leather in shades of white, naturally light colours, natural brown and putty tones for leather. These blend with light durmast wood, giving the yacht a sophisticated feel and bringing warm, sunny countries to mind.

TraditionalNavy

Linens and cottons in navy blue and shaded white blend with various shades of tobacco in fabric and leather. There is also the traditional wood used for sailing, namely natural teak, taking those on board back to the long-established seafaring concept of historical sailing clubs.

Natural fabrics such as linen and cotton are featured in different shades of wine, Cowes red and the fundamental shaded white. There is also “drunken” leather and Canaletto walnut, bringing to mind the Admiral’s Cup and Fastnet Race triumphs of sports sailing.

Spirit of Finland

A typical modern Swan interior featuring an under-stated Nordic approach with use of hand-crafted timbers and seaworthy detailing. Light European oak and walnut floorboards are paired with carefully selected performance fabrics in light natural colours and earthy leather accents for a soft touch. A timeless, light yacht interior from the land of the midnight sun.

Forward, the vast owner's cabin, bathed in light, affords maximum comfort and copious storage. Guests are not left out, with a spacious guest cabin – or two, according to your options – located aft, with plenty of headroom.

Well-Balanced Exterior Living Spaces

On the exterior, the cockpit features multiple living areas, distributed for the various moments and activities on board. The sheets of the mainsail and genoa are led back to the helm, clear of pas-sengers, who can enjoy relaxing on two comfortable sun loungers, located on either side of the companionway. At anchor, the cockpit accommodates six to eight people around a table, equipped with a refrigerated compartment, while a wide swim platform provides access to the sea or addi-tional space to sunbathe.

From the center cockpit, you step down into the salon to find the galley port aft, wrap-around seating/berth/storage port forward, folding teak table centerline forward, benchseat/berth/storage to starboard and nav station port aft. The guest stateroom, guest head with enclosed shower and crew berth/work room are forward. There is a companionway with storage and mechanical compartment access starboard aft leading to the full beam master stateroom with queen size berth and ensuite head and tub/shower. There is additional access to the mechanical compartment through a door aft of the tub/shower.

The headroom in the guest stateroom and guest shower is 6'2", 6'10" down to 6' in the salon and 6'2" in the master stateroom and tub/shower. the master stateroom berth is 6'8" long and the guest stateroom berths are 6' and 6'2" long.

The Formosa 51

A Traditional Ketch for over 50 years!

How did this all start? How did a traditional fifty foot ketch come to be made out of fiberglass?

These boats started as a dream by William Garden and Bill Hardin back in the 1950’s. As far as I can tell the hull lines of these boats are based upon a William Garden 1954 Wooden Shoal Draft Cutter Rigged Ketch. Why do I not have a definitive answer? We are reaching back in time almost 70 years! Some research points to the Sea Wolf (Bill Hardin) as the original design or maybe even the Porpoise or Atom (both William Garden designs). What happened next was dumb luck or perhaps the free market at its best. The fiberglass boat building revolution of the 1960’s and American Marine Architects all wanted to capitalize on a less expensive way to build better quality boats. Taiwanese traditional boat builders merged with American businessmen to pioneer the fiberglass boat building market. As early as 1963 the boat that was to be known at the Formosa 51 had blueprints (see above photo) and was being set up for production. Sister ships like the Mariner 40 (first built in 1965 in Japan) and the Sea Wolf 40 (built as early as 1960 by the Chen Family, latter to become Formosa Boat Works) had already begun the fiberglass revolution.

Traditional wooden sailboats all had full keels. The framing of a wooden boat prevented the development of a fin keel with a spade rudder large enough to control the hydrodynamics of a large sailing vessel. Naval Architects who experimented with fin keels 70 + years ago often used other materials. Even early fiberglass keelboats used a cut away with a skeg mounted rudder until they understood the strength of fiberglass. In my opinion the Formosa 51 is a piece of nautical history. This boat incorporated the best of William Garden’s wooden sailboat designs and preserved it forever in a fiberglass build. These boats have survived the test of time. Many of these boats have circumnavigated the globe. Almost every boat that ended up in America was sailed here via the Pacific or the long way via the Atlantic Ocean. They have undergone unfair reviews by Sailing Purists who tried to compare them to more modern designs being churned out in the early days of fiberglass. This 50′ 11″ Shoal Draft Cutter Rigged Ketch was built as a Traditional Sailing Vessel – not a high performance sailboat. It was revolutionary for the time because of its lower cost, fiberglass build, shallow draft, ICW mast height and room for a family of four with space for additional crew if desired. All this and the original owner got to design the interior before purchasing the boat.

The hull proved to be so popular it was copied and duplicated by many different yards in Taiwan. The Formosa 51, Hudson Force 50, Mikelson 5o, and the Goldcoast Offshore 50 just to name a few.

Billionaire fights to dock his boat on water behind his house. His 164-foot boat, that is.

The love of the water, and a mega-yacht to enjoy it, is putting one resident at odds with village of north palm beach leaders..

For some people, the ultimate Florida lifestyle is a waterfront house , a private dock and a boat parked next to it. But what if that boat is a mega-yacht , and the mega-yacht stretches 164 feet?

That's the conundrum facing the Village of North Palm Beach.

This tiny community in northern Palm Beach County, with only 13,000 full-time residents, has an identity so tied to the water that a ship's steering wheel is the village's emblem.

But it's that love of the water that is putting one resident at odds with village leaders.

For the past several years, homeowner Michael Bozutto has been battling the village for the right to park his 164-foot Westport, dubbed Honey, behind a home he owns at 932 Shore Drive.

The house, built in 1961, is a one-story, ranch-style property with three bedrooms on a half-acre lot. Bozzuto paid $840,247 for the house in 2014, according to Palm Beach County property records.

Lawsuit rooted in dispute over where to dock mega-yacht

What makes this plain house special is its location. It's on a rare corner bordered on the north and east by navigable waters that provide access to the Atlantic Ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet. The east-facing dock is large enough to accommodate Bozzuto's motor yacht.

Since Bozutto bought Honey for an undisclosed sum a decade ago, he mostly has parked it at the Old Port Cove Marina, near Tiger Woods' 155-foot showy mega-yacht, ironically dubbed Privacy.

More recently, Bozzuto has wanted to park Honey alongside his Shore Drive house, one of four houses he owns in the village. While Bozzuto keeps some personal property at the Shore Drive house, he lives at a house he owns at Harbour Isles Court.

Village officials warned Bozzuto he can't park Honey at 932 Shore Drive because boats can only be parked on docks behind houses that are occupied by the homeowner.

But village rules do not define the word "occupied." For instance, the rules do not state that occupied means the house is a residence where the owner lives. Village rules also contain no restrictions on the size of boats that can be kept at private docks.

After years of pushing back against what he believes are fuzzy rules, Bozzuto in March filed a lawsuit against the village.

He alleged the municipality is illegally depriving him of his property rights because nothing in the village code prevents him from mooring Honey at his house. He is asking a Palm Beach County Circuit Court judge to rule that he has a constitutional right to dock Honey there.

Gregory Coleman, Bozzuto's West Palm Beach attorney, said the village has plenty of waterfront homes with yachts parked behind them. But Coleman said the village is illegally blocking Bozzuto from docking Honey at his house because the village is bending to pressure from a handful of neighbors who think the boat is too big.

The selective enforcement is wrong, said Coleman, a former president of the Florida Bar.

"He's a very under-the-radar guy who doesn't cause anybody any problems," Coleman said of Bozzuto. "He pays his property taxes, and he wants to be left alone by the village of North Palm Beach. Unfortunately, they are singling Mike out."

Neither Leonard Rubin, the village's longtime attorney, nor Village Manager Chuck Huff responded to requests for comment.

Eric Stettin, a Fort Lauderdale-based attorney who is representing the village in the Bozzuto lawsuit, said he could not comment on pending litigation.

What good is a man's castle if he can't have a boat in his moat?

Coleman's lawsuit describes the conflict as a battle over property rights, but real estate and yachting experts say it's also a sign of the times.

As wealthy new residents pour into the county wanting all the perks of the Sunshine State, they want a boat to go along with their waterfront homes and golf club memberships. Some longtime residents fear Palm Beach County is turning into a playground for billionaires, to the detriment of everyday people who also want to live in sunshine and peace.

This conflict between Old Florida and new money is an ever-present tension, but even seasoned yacht brokers say they've never seen interest in luxury yachts quite as strong as it is now.

"What we've seen in the marketplace right after COVID in the yachting industry, and especially the superyacht segment, is the most incredible growth ever seen in the history of yachting to date," said Shannon McCoy, a luxury yacht advisor and broker with Worth Avenue Yachts in Palm Beach.

"A lot of people are moving here with serious money," added Pascal Savoy, U.S. managing director of Camper & Nicholsons International yacht brokers in Fort Lauderdale.

While in the past Palm Beach County was not considered lively enough for some buyers, Savoy said the county's growing sophistication is putting it on the map in a way never seen before.

"It's a mini-Monaco for us," Savoy said.

Prices for mega-yachts can range from $18 million to $60 million, or many times that, for the largest and most decked-out mega-yachts, Savoy said.

While some yachts can be glitzy, a 164-foot Westport is considered a more low-profile boat, Savoy added.

Michael Bozzuto's interests: Houses, boats and philanthropy

Bozzuto is no newcomer to North Palm Beach. He's been a resident of the village for 20 years.

He is the billionaire owner of a family-owned supermarket wholesaler in Connecticut, and an investor and philanthropist who likes to collect houses and yachts, Coleman said.

In addition to the four North Palm Beach houses and several yachts he owns, Bozzuto in February paid a whopping $31.1 million for a house in the Town of Palm Beach Shores. The house, which has two docks, sits just north of the Palm Beach/Lake Worth Inlet.

Coleman said there is plenty of room for other boaters to navigate the waterway when Honey is parked at the Shore Drive house in North Palm Beach. And while other people may not have as large a yacht, there are other sizeable yachts parked on docks behind other North Palm Beach homes, too, he added.

At a 2017 village council meeting, then-Mayor Darryl Aubrey commented on the issue, according to the complaint.

"When I didn't live here full time, I had a boat sitting in my dock, I was gone nine months of the year. I don't see how you can say that someone has to be in a residence year-round, seems to be some interpretation of occupant, there would be an enormous number of violations," Aubrey said.

Another member of the village council asked if the village had a definition now, the complaint said.

Rubin, the village attorney, replied: "No, we don't," according to the lawsuit.

Palm Beach County's waterways run deep, and they are popular

The yacht docking dispute is particularly timely, given the scarcity of dock space for boats of all sizes.

The most convenient place to park a boat is on the water behind a house, brokers say. But not every waterway or channel can accommodate the draft, or depth, of a mega-yacht.

However, the dock behind Bozzuto's Shore Drive house can.

Not only is the Westport not known for its deep hulls, but the waterway also is typical of northern Palm Beach County, which boasts deep water and easy access to the ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet, said Coleman, a lifelong boater.

"In Palm Beach County, they have deeper water, and it allows people to have larger yachts," Savoy agreed.

But not every waterway is deep enough for every boat.

McCoy said she specializes in helping advise potential yacht owners about the county's varied water depths before they buy a house, if they plan to dock their yacht behind it.

If yacht owners don't have a private dock, the other option is a marina. But marina space is hard to find, with many dock berths reserved for months in advance, McCoy said.

Despite the challenges of owning a boat and finding a place to dock it, yacht brokers say demand continues.

They see interest continuing from business executives moving here with their families as they relocate their companies to Palm Beach County. There's also a growing demand for yachts among female buyers, McCoy added.

They also see younger mega-yacht buyers, some even in their early 30s. This is in sharp contrast to the mostly older buyers in the past, Savoy said.

Palm Beach County may not be as go-go as Miami-Dade County when it comes to showy ships, but if interest continues, "it's coming," Savoy said. "You're going to attract bigger yachts."

Put another way: "No one needs a boat, but everyone needs a boat," McCoy said. "It's the ultimate lifestyle."
