Cruise Ship Rescues 14 People Stranded at Sea for 8 Days as Passengers Look on in 'Shock': WATCH

'We could see in the waves a tiny boat," passenger Alessandra Amodio tells PEOPLE of the incident that happened aboard the Icon of the Seas on Sunday

yacht cruise near houston

A cruise ship’s voyage to Mexico and the Bahamas turned into a rescue mission when the boat spotted a small vessel in the waves.

On Sunday, Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas , the new world's largest cruise ship that launched in January, rescued 14 people who had been stranded at sea for over a week.

Icon passenger Alessandra Amodio told PEOPLE that the cruise ship was in the midst of an eight-day Caribbean itinerary when they spotted the individuals.

"I was in the lunch buffet with my family when we heard a coded announcement over the loud speakers," Amodio told PEOPLE, adding that the announcement came at around 3 p.m. local time. "A few minutes later people started gathering at the windows and then the captain came on and announced that they had found a distressed vessel and we would be turning around to investigate. We all rushed to the windows and in the nearish distance we could see in the waves a tiny boat waving either a large white flag or sheet."

Shortly after, the ship turned around and pulled up next to the boat and "deployed a small zodiac-type rescue boat," she recalls.

"Eventually we saw Royal Caribbean crew helping about two people from the distressed boat onto the rescue boat before returning to the vessel. They then made a few more trips to safely bring everyone on board."

According to Amodio, they later found out that the passengers on the small boat had been "lost at sea for eight days."

"We got a final announcement once they were all on board safely telling us there was 14 people on board," she said, adding that passengers clapped and cheered upon hearing everyone had been rescued safely.

"Our first reaction was shock, I’ve been on six or so cruises and I’ve never experienced anything even close to this," Amodio continued. "During the rescue everyone was more shocked and the general consensus was that this wasn’t something anyone ever thought would be happening. It was crazy to see, even knowing where they were in the water, once they dropped the flag, they were hard to spot. Just seeing this small boat you knew was filled with people surrounded by the vastness of the water was enough to freak you out. "

The ship was on its first full day of sailing and it was between Cozumel, Mexico and western Cuba when the incident happened.

"We weren’t told by the captain or crew what happened to them," Amodio added of the rescued individuals.

The cruise liner, which departed from Miami, Florida, was headed to Roatán, Honduras, and Royal Caribbean's private Bahamian island, CocoCay, during its voyage.

Royal Caribbean told PEOPLE in a statement, "On March 3, 2024, Icon of the Seas encountered a small vessel adrift and in need of assistance. The ship's crew immediately launched a rescue operation, safely bringing 14 people onboard. The crew provided them with medical attention, and is working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard."

A U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson told Newsweek that the rescue occurred in Mexico's search-and-rescue area of responsibility.

The Icon of the Seas made its maiden voyage out of South Florida in late January. The ship departed from Port Miami and docked at ports including Puerto Costa Maya in Mexico, Basseterre in St. Kitts & Nevis and Charlotte Amalie in St. Thomas.

Along with the world’s largest pool and water park at sea, Icon also boasts eight "neighborhoods" to explore and an open-air "Central Park."

The record-breaking vessel overtook Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas , which formerly held the title of largest cruise ship in the world.

Middle East latest: Journalist 'detained and beaten' as Israel raids Gaza hospital - with several people reportedly killed

An IDF raid on Gaza City's al Shifa hospital has caused multiple casualties and set off a fierce fire in one of the buildings, the Palestinian health authorities say.

Earlier, we brought you the words of the European Union's foreign policy chief, who accused Israel of weaponising food to provoke famine.

"In Gaza we are no longer on the brink of famine, we are in a state of famine, affecting thousands of people," Josep Borrell said at the opening of a conference on humanitarian aid for Gaza in Brussels.

Watch his speech below...

These images show the crowds of Palestinians desperate for food and much-needed aid outside UNRWA warehouses in Gaza City.

The city has seen a flurry of military activity this morning, after the Israel Defence Forces reported a raid on al Shifa hospital.

We also heard from the UN's food agency, which said famine was "imminent" in parts of northern Gaza - while virtually everyone else across the enclave is struggling to access food.

The European Union's foreign policy chief Joseph Borrell said today that he was confident the bloc would find an agreement to impose sanctions on both Hamas and violent Israeli West Bank settlers.

"It seems that today all will agree on putting sanctions on both Hamas and the violent settlers who are harassing Palestinians in the West Bank," he told reporters ahead of a foreign ministers meeting in Brussels.

Hamas is not in charge in the West Bank and no hostages are being held there.

There are regular clashes and riots in the West Bank - often aggravated by Israeli settlers both threatening and inflicting violence on Palestinians if they do not give up their land - which has been consistently condemned by even the strongest international supporters of Israel, like the US.

Israel conducts regular raids in the West Bank to arrest or demolish homes of people it deems terrorists.

Over the weekend we learnt that Israel is planning to push ahead with an assault in the southern city of Rafah, despite massive international opposition.

Israel's offensive in Gazahas driven most of its 2.3 million people from their homes, with more than one million sheltering in Rafah.

A quarter of the population is starving, according to the UN, with aid organisations struggling to get food through due to Israeli restrictions and security concerns.

In desperation, a small group of countries has resorted to dropping aid from the air and deliveries have finally been going by sea - but neither of these makes up for the capacity that should be brought in by road.

"It's not something we will do while keeping the population locked in place," the Israeli prime minister said of the planned assault.

"In fact, we'll do the very opposite - we will enable them to leave because our consideration for reducing and minimising civilian casualties has guided us and will continue to guide us in future."

You can read more about what Benjamin Netanyahu said on the Rafah offensive here ...

The United Nations' food agency says famine is "imminent" in northern Gaza.

The World Food Programme released the latest findings of its Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), an international process for estimating the scale of hunger crises.

It says virtually everyone in Gaza is struggling to get enough food, and that some 210,000 people in the north are in Phase 5, its highest category, referred to as "catastrophic hunger".

A looming Israeli ground attack in Rafah would worsen the crisis, it warned, claiming it would drive around half of the 2.3 million people in Gaza into Phase 5.

This follows comments from the European Union's foreign policy chief, who said Israel is provoking famine and using starvation as a weapon (see 9.26am post).

Al Jazeera is reporting that one of its journalists inside Gaza has been beaten and detained by Israeli forces at al Shifa hospital.

"We're getting reports that Israeli forces have arrested Al Jazeera Arabic's correspondent Ismail al Ghoul from inside the al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City," Al Jazeera wrote.

"According to Palestinian writer and journalist Imad Zaqqout and other witnesses, al Ghoul was beaten severely by Israeli soldiers before he was arrested with dozens of men and women within the hospital," it added.

The IDF conducted a raid at the hospital earlier this morning, claiming senior Hamas leadership had regrouped inside (see 4.50am, 9.04am and previous post).

The Al Jazeera claim is unverfied, and Israel has not commented on the report.

The Israel Defence Forces has released footage of its overnight raid on al Shifa hospital.

The video, which is unverified, shows what Israel says is explosions and gunfire from Hamas fighters from the hospital.

Within the below clip is some picture sourced from social media - in which you can see smoke rising and hear the sound of gunshots.

A quick update to our 8.19am post now, and Mossad chief David Barnea and other high-level Israeli delegates have departed for talks in Qatar, a source has told our US partner network NBC News.

Although there is little optimism about a breakthrough in this round of talks, the official said all sides remained under intense American pressure to try to get to a deal.

We reported earlier that Mr Barnea and the delegation will offer a six-week ceasefire in exchange for 40 hostages.

The team has a "broad mandate" to hammer out a hostage deal in indirect negotiations with Hamas, Israeli officials told Hebrew media outlets, with one source saying both sides will need to show flexibility.

This stage of the negotiations could take at least two weeks, given the difficulties that Hamas's foreign delegates would likely have in communicating with the group's leadership in Gaza.

The European Union's foreign policy chief has accused Israel of weaponising food to provoke famine.

"In Gaza we are no longer on the brink of famine, we are in a state of famine, affecting thousands of people," Josep Borrell said at the opening of a conference on humanitarian aid for Gaza in Brussels.

"This is unacceptable - starvation is used as a weapon of war. Israel is provoking famine."

Israel has been widely criticised for not allowing more aid into the enclave since ground operations began last October - with lengthy checks required at tightly controlled border crossings.

Israel says it allows adequate aid in but that Hamas steals it, while also accusing humanitarian organisations of not doing enough.

More on the raid at al Shifa hospital now.

Witnesses on the ground have suggested that military activity has not stopped at the hospital, with one reporting a "reinvasion" of Gaza's capital.

"Suddenly, we started to hear sounds of explosions, several bombings, and soon tanks started to roll, they came from the western road and headed toward al Shifa, then sounds of gunfire and explosions increased," Mohammad Ali, who lives around a kilometre from the hospital, told Reuters.

"We don't know what is happening, but it looked as if it was a reinvasion of the Gaza City."

He claimed military activities began overnight at around 1am (11pm last night UK time).

Other anonymous residents said tanks were operating at the edge of the Beach refugee camp - firing shells at some buildings nearby.

Near to al Shifa, Israeli army forces raided a school where displaced families are sheltering, and detained several men there, residents and Hamas media said - although this is unconfirmed.

The scale of Israel's operations in the capital remains unclear.

The capital saw fierce fighting in the early months of the war, but IDF attention has turned elsewhere - with a major offensive in Khan Younis and widespread clearing operations to the north.

What do we know about the raid this morning?

The Israeli military said soldiers had conducted a "precise operation" based on intelligence that the hospital was being used by senior Hamas leaders.

The enclave's Hamas-run health ministry said a fire broke out at the entrance of the hospital complex, causing cases of suffocation among displaced women and children sheltering in the hospital.

The Israeli army dropped new leaflets around the hospital in Gaza City.

"To all those who exist or are displaced in Rimal and the displaced in al Shifa and its vicinity: you are in a dangerous combat zone," the statement said.

"The IDF is operating hard in its residential areas to destroy terror infrastructure."

The military issued drone footage of the operation (which we'll bring you shortly), while unverified video on social media appeared to show an Israeli tank blocking the hospital's main gate.
