2022 Spirit Yachts Regatta Highlights

Spirit Yachts – The Spirit Yachts 2022 Regatta in partnership with Locate Guernsey took place from 25th June – 2nd July in Guernsey and the surrounding Channel Islands’ waters. A competitive six race series exclusively for Spirit Yachts’ owners and crew. A lively social scene included drinks on the dock, BBQs, after parties and a sparkling prize giving dinner saw the Spirit fleet race competitively on the water and party hard on the shore; a week to remember.

Spirit Yachts – Fast-paced, tactical racing, lively socialising, charity Optimist sailing, and a stunning location; the first Spirit Yachts Regatta in partnership with Locate Guernsey had it all.

A fleet of Spirit yachts ranging from 37 to 65 feet competed in Guernsey’s notoriously tidal waters in a six race series that took in scenic views of the surrounding Channel Islands. Thanks to Guernsey Yacht Club and the race team for their help in delivering a fantastic week on the water and ashore.

Sean McMillan, Spirit Yachts CEO commented, “The Spirit Guernsey Regatta was a culmination of nearly three decades of dedication, teamwork, and passion. To see a fleet of Spirits flying across the start line at our own regatta was a very proud moment for all the team.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better week. Perfect racing conditions, fantastic location, and a wonderful group of people. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and as a result we are already discussing the Spirit Regatta 2024.”

Based in Guernsey’s capital St Peter Port, the regatta comprised a six-race series of passage, round the cans, and windward/leeward courses organised by the Guernsey Yacht Club (GYC).

Under the regatta racing rules, each yacht also had to submit a female-helmed race result. Designed to provide opportunities for young female sailors, the rule allowed yachts to choose any race based on availability, skill set, and weather conditions.

The highly competitive regatta was won overall by Spirit 52 Flight of Ufford, with Spirit 52 Oui Fling in second but only missing out on the top spot by 0.5 point, and Spirit 65 Chloe Giselle one point behind Oui Fling in third. The WEST SYSTEM passage race was won by Oui Fling and Flight of Ufford took the Locate Guernsey passage race. Spirit 46 Whisper of Lymington placed fourth overall and took home the prestigious Spirit Cup for “embracing the Spirit of the regatta”.

Ashore, over 120 regatta competitors and guests were treated to a varied programme of social events in iconic locations. From welcome drinks at the 800-year-old Castle Cornet to sunset BBQs, and a glamorous prize-giving dinner, the socialising was as lively as the racing. The regatta also raised funds for the Guernsey Sailing Trust with an Optimist race on the model yacht pond at Guernsey Yacht Club.

At the end of the regatta week the owner of a Spirit 46 commented, “What a great event, so professionally organised with such friendly people. What a great family Spirit is.”

Another Spirit 46 owner said, “An unforgettable week. What a privilege to be part of the Spirit family and thank you Guernsey!”

For its inaugural regatta, Spirit Yachts partnered with Locate Guernsey, a Guernsey government agency established to promote the benefits of Guernsey as a destination of choice for individual and business relocation.

Director of Locate Guernsey, Jo Stoddart, commented, “The Spirits brought a stunning spectacle on the water and the owners, crew and guests were also able to make the most of all that Guernsey offers ashore. It was a brilliant week for Guernsey and showcased some of the benefits of the island to a discerning audience; it also demonstrated we can successfully host high profile sailing events.”

The Spirit 2022 Regatta attracted a raft of high-profile sponsors from across the marine industry. Lead sponsor WEST SYSTEM was accompanied by supporting sponsors Lewmar, Oceanskies, OneSails GBR (East), Raymarine, and Torqeedo.

SPIRIT YACHTS SET TO HOST FIRST REGATTA

Spirit regatta.

This month, Spirit Yachts has revealed the details of its first ever regatta exclusively for its community of sail and motor yacht owners. Taking place from 25th June to 2nd July in Guernsey, the Spirit 2022 Regatta will see a fleet of Spirit yachts race and socialise together.

Hosted by Spirit Yachts in partnership with Locate Guernsey, the Spirit 2022 Regatta is now open for entries.

Sean McMillan, Spirit Yachts CEO commented, “The idea for the Spirit Regatta was driven by our owners expressing interest in the opportunity to race and socialise exclusively with other Spirits. There is a fantastic community spirit and friendship amongst the Spirit owners and crews, so whilst the racing will no doubt be competitive, the socialising will also be a lot of fun.”

Based in Guernsey’s capital St Peter Port, the regatta will comprise a six-race series of passage, round the cans, and windward/leeward courses organised by the Guernsey Yacht Club (GYC).

Commodore of the GYC, Anna Rivers, said, “We are thrilled to be welcoming Spirit Yachts and its fleet of stunning modern classic yachts to Guernsey. Our famously tidal waters and navigational challenges will make for a competitive series and a spectacle on the water.”

Once ashore, regatta competitors and guests will be treated to a varied programme of social events in iconic locations. From welcome drinks at the 800-year-old Castle Cornet to sunset BBQs, and a glamorous prize-giving dinner, there will be plenty of opportunities for socialising. The regatta will also raise funds for the Guernsey Sailing Trust.

For its inaugural regatta, Spirit Yachts has partnered with Locate Guernsey, a Guernsey government agency established to promote the benefits of Guernsey to potential relocators.

Director of Locate Guernsey, Jo Stoddart, commented, “With its beautiful beaches, bustling marinas and thriving community, Guernsey is a wonderful location for yacht racing and cruising. The Spirit 2022 Regatta provides a fantastic opportunity to showcase everything Guernsey has to offer to those who enjoy life by the water.”

The Spirit 2022 Regatta has attracted a raft of high-profile sponsors from across the marine industry. Lead sponsor WEST SYSTEM is accompanied by supporting sponsors Lewmar, Oceanskies, OneSails GBR (East), Raymarine, and Torqeedo.

A Message to CYC Members & Friends:     While our community mourns the loss of our clubhouse, we are reaching out today to share our vision for the coming racing season. We can put it quite plainly - it is the goal of CYC’s members and staff to move forward with the 2024 racing program as planned. We know that there will be some logistical changes to the hospitality we are able to offer, but we are certain that the comradery and fun that have been such a presence in all our lives will continue to show up, but only with your support. The process we go through in the coming weeks and months will present challenges and opportunities, but we hope that our racing community will be along for the ride.

The King of the Hill and the Sunset Series Cruising Championship are end-of-the-season championship races for the popular weeknight Sunset Series. Two great races — one fun party! Regatta Chair: S/C Debbie Feinerman ( [email protected] )

King of the Hill

The “best of the best” from each of the classes in the Racing Division are invited to compete in this inverted-start race. This race will pit the best sailors in each class against each other, with the boat crossing the finish line first declared “King of the Hill” for that year.  Entry to this race is limited to those boats that receive an invitation. Invitations will be issued based on the final results of the 2023 Sunset Series, which ends the preceding Wednesday. Invitations will go to the top 1-4 boats in each class of the Racing Division based on average class size for the 2023 Sunset Series. Additional boats will then be invited based on end-of-the-season standings for the Marylyn Ritchie trophy (awarded to the boat with the best overall record in the Racing Division) to result in 21 invited boats.   The winner will be awarded the King of the Hill trophy which will remain on display at California Yacht Club. The King of the Hill trophy was a pre-existing CYC trophy that was re-dedicated to this new race in 2002. Joan Hill was the long-time Chair for the Sunset Series and a regular volunteer for CYC races. In 2003, Joanie died as a result of breast cancer and since then this race has served as a memorial to her dedication and hard work in running the Sunset Series for many years.

Sunset Series Cruising Championship

New in 2021, the Sunset Series Cruising Championship is an end-of-the-season race run the same evening as King of the Hill in which the “best of the best” from each of the classes in the Cruising Division are invited to compete in this inverted-start race. This race will pit the best sailors in each class against each other, with the boat crossing the finish line first declared the “Sunset Series Cruising Champion” for that year. Entry to this race is limited to those boats that receive an invitation. Invitations will be issued based on the final results of the 2023 Sunset Series, which ends the preceding Wednesday. Invitations will go to the top 2-4 boats in each class of the Cruising Division based on average class size for the 2023 Sunset Series. Additional boats will then be invited based on end-of-the-season standings for the Millard Rosing trophy (awarded to the boat with the best overall record in the Cruising Division) to result in 8 invited boats. The winner will be awarded the Sunset Series Cruising Championship Trophy which will remain on display at California Yacht Club.

The top superyacht regattas to add to your 2024 calendar

Related articles.

From the South of France to St Barths, the superyacht regatta calendar is packed with opportunities for owners to race their boats in stunning settings. Whether you are looking for keen competition or are more interested in the après scene, we are here to help you pick the perfect contest.

Oyster World Rally, Antigua

From 14 january, 2024 .

By the finish of the 22/23 rally, more than 100 Oysters had circumnavigated over the decade that the British builder has been running these rallies. Dozens more will have their chance at the next one, which heads west from Antigua and makes 15 stopovers on the 16-month route.

New Zealand Millennium Cup, Auckland

February 23-26, 2024.

Postponed from 2023, the Millennium Cup 2024 takes place in a new location – Auckland, aka the City of Sails, which eases logistics for international owners. There is also a new multihull division as well. What isn’t changing is the fun racing with a Kiwi flavour.

Superyacht Challenge, Antigua

March 11-17, 2024.

Defining superyachts as vessels over 24.4 metres, this regatta offers four days of lively racing from the entrance to English Harbour as well as relaxed parties brimming with camaraderie in historic Nelson’s Dockyard.

The race is held annually in Nelson’s Dockyard and comprises daily pursuit races, and an optional race around the island, with the start and finish line just off English Harbour. Entrants are divided into three classes — buccaneers, corsairs and privateers — and all compete under the ORC Superyacht Rule.

Rather than a traditional trophy, winners receive barrels of rum, suitably filled in true Caribbean style. Additional awards include best-dressed crew, loudest Caribbean shirt, and a cook-off between crews. In fact, the only trophy awarded is the Gosnell Trophy, which is given to the crew that has "competed in the Spirit of the Regatta" both on the water and ashore.

St Barths Bucket Regatta

March 21-24, 2024.

The St Barths Bucket Regatta attracts some of the finest sailors and sailing yachts from across the world and is always a highlight on the racing calendar. This invitation-only event welcomes around 40 superyachts (usually upwards of 30 metres in length) to the sandy shores of St Barths each year.

The racing has traditionally been on three courses but organisers have said they now have 30 options to choose from.

Off the water, owners have their choice of countless invitations, from private gatherings to the Bucket-affiliated soiree at Tamarin as well as the final awards ceremony party, which is traditionally held at the five-star Eden Rock hotel. At the yacht hop, some owners have been known to fly in thousands of oysters and host aerial silk performers, which proves that the old Bucket spirit of winning the party — if not the day on the water — is still prevalent.

The 2024 fleet is already shaping up nicely with regatta regulars such as the 56-metre Malek , 51-metre Red Dragon and 35-metre Whisper all making a return, with the new 59-metre Maximus also anticipated to join.

Les Voiles de St Barths Richard Mille

April 14-20, 2024.

A relative newcomer to the racing scene, Les Voiles de St Barths may not be steeped in history like many long-timers on this list, but it has swiftly become a calendar staple since its inception in 2010. It welcomes a serious fleet of modified racers and mini maxis - think TP52s and JV72s - among smaller racing boats and a multihull fleet.

Now in its 13th year, the event will see the fleet return to the red-roofed town of Gustavia in St Barths. Like the bucket, the regatta is powered by reliable trade winds that arrive from the east, which means very few days are lost due to unfavourable weather conditions. Racecourses make use of the landscape with clusters of rocks punching out of the water that serve as marks. Some more competitive teams even send divers down to see how close they can get before having to tack off.

Racing is close and competitive but things are much more laid back ashore. The lay day usually consists of a long lunch at Nikki Beach followed by tug of war and diving for bottles of Barons de Rothschild champagne.

Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta

June 4-8, 2024.

The Sardinian superyacht regatta is back as the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda welcomes Giorgio Armani as its title sponsor for the second year.

Where other regattas may have a T-shirts and flip-flops feel, Sardinia is about glamour in the playground of the Italian elite. It’s not all focused on the nightlife, though; any serious sailor knows racing here is not for the faint-hearted.

“Sardinia is, in my eyes, the most exceptional regatta area in the world,” says the owner of  WinWin . And he's not wrong. Competitors can expect stronger winds from the northwest and have to navigate rocks jutting out of the water in Bomb Alley — the passage between Sardinia and La Maddalena archipelago.

The regatta is always capped off with an evening at Phi Beach —  WinWin ’s owner says it’s the best party of any regatta. It’s a quintessentially Italian summer scene, with guests treated to glorious sunset views and music from top DJs piped through bars and dance floors interspersed among the rocks right on the water.

Entry is open to superyachts with a minimum length of 27.43 metres and the event will also encompass the Southern Wind Rendezvous.

Superyacht Cup, Palma

June 19-22, 2024.

This annual event for yachts over 24 metres is the longest-running superyacht regatta in Europe, and now incorporates a Corinthian Spirit Class

A laid-back southern Mediterranean vibe prevails at the Superyacht Cup in Palma, Europe’s longest-running superyacht regatta. Leave your jackets and ties at home; this is a shorts and T-shirt event. Uniquely, this regatta is contained within a fenced-in event village, proving that relaxed and informal can also mean ultra-exclusive.

While racing in the Bay of Palma may not offer the same dramatic scenery as the Caribbean, it is ideal for newcomers who may find rounding inflatable marks less daunting than a rocky outcrop, and its more sheltered position means there are no boat-breaking big seas. The race committee has the ability to set courses in the bay to suit the fleet and to really give every yacht a better chance to sail to its rating.

Last year's fixture welcomes a quartet of J Class entries, Svea , Topaz , Ranger and Velsheda .

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

September 8-14,  2024.

The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is the highlight of many a Maxi racing calendar and is back for its 34th edition in 2024. Staged off Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda - known for its rocky scenery and turquoise waters – it continues to attract dedicated owners, highly skilled crews and exceptional yachts.

This year's Cup follows a hugely successful event last year. Racing is open to yachts of at least 18.29 metres and, for the first time this year, multihulls can join its ranks.

Oyster Palma Regatta, Palma

September 21–25, 2024 .

Taking place at the new venue of Port Adriano, this special edition celebrates 50 years of Oyster Yachts. In addition to the friendly competition over four days of racing, there will be an owners’ dinner to commemorate its half-century of building bluewater cruising yachts.

Ibiza JoySail, Balearic Islands

September 19-22, 2024.

Now in its fourth edition and growing exponentially each year, this laid-back regatta welcomes maxis and superyachts for offshore and coastal racing in the Balearic Islands, along with plenty of onshore socialising hosted by STP Palma and Marina Ibiza.

Les Voiles de St Tropez

September 26 – 6 october, 2024.

The Mediterranean big-boat racing season winds down with Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez. But don't be fooled, this is no small soirée. The event is the largest gathering of Maxis yachts in the world as owners and crew come together and toast to the last of the summer sun with a week of good old-fashioned racing.

Swan Med Regatta-Tuscany Challenge, Marina di Scarlino, Italy

October 2024 .

New to the calendar last year, the inaugural Tuscany Challenge gathered Med-based Swan owners for a first ever Med-based end-of-season regatta set against the stunning backdrop of the Tuscan archipelago. This Nautor Swan Experience gathering celebrates the entire Swan world across a three-day competition. Hosted by the Yacht Club Isole di Toscana, it determines the world champions in the ClubSwan 50, ClubSwan 42 and ClubSwan 36.

65th Fishers Island YC ‘Round Island Race

Saturday, September 04, 2021

Registration and Details (coming soon)

FIYC Racing

Since its 1886 founding, the Fishers Island Yacht Club has brought together sailors interested in taking part in a competitive and a cooperative venture against the elements, and each other, on the waters surrounding Fishers Island. To this day, racing at Fishers Island continues to be simultaneously a competitive and a cooperative venture: competitive, because everybody wants to do their best, and cooperative, because we all rely on each other to obey the rules and voluntarily take a penalty when we realize (or are reminded) that we’ve broken one. This Corinthian Spirit is at the core of our organization.

Today we continue to emphasize high-quality racing and race management, which may be why we’ve been able to attract such a deep pool of former and current national, North American and World champions to the starting line week after week. Though small in size, this yacht club has earned an outsized reputation due to the unusually large number of highly-respected sailors that have hoisted the FIYC burgee above many decks while racing across many oceans.

Our Classes

Fishers Island Yacht Club has a very active fleet of racers competing amongst five classes; IOD, Bullseye, Club 420, Laser, and Open Bic. Sailors of FIYC compete not only at Fisher Island but have represented Fishers Island in the IOD and Bullseye classes nationally and internationally. FIYC has numerous world and national sailing champions as well as prior Olympians. The club has a very active instructional junior sailing program offering novice through advanced coaching throughout the summer months. The keelboat class is especially inclusive of the junior sailors, offering them numerous opportunities to sail larger boats on the weekend. FIYC strives to create high-level sailors, along with supporting adventure sailing and a love of the sea.

Antigua Sailing Week – Love and Unity

Overall Results can be viewed HERE

Antigua, Saturday 6 May: The 54th edition of Antigua Sailing Week attracted boats and crew from over 20 nations, with sailors competing from six continents. Moderate trade winds and tropical heat blessed the racing all week; sailing conditions were absolutely fabulous. Antigua Sailing Week is the most celebrated regatta in the Caribbean and the 2023 edition added another great chapter to the history of racing in Antigua, dating back to 1968.

The Final Awards Ceremony was a wonderful occasion for the final party. The World Heritage site, Nelson’s Dockyard in English Harbour was a perfect setting for the famous awards ceremony. Guests of Honour were Charles ‘Max’ Fernandez – Minister of Tourism and Economic Development, Gregory Athill representing the Parliamentary representative for St. Pauls, Minister EP Chet Greene, Phillip Shoul – Chairman of the National Parks Authority, and Mrs Ann Marie Martin – Commissioner of the National Parks.

President of Antigua Sailing Week, Alison Sly-Adams welcomed the Minister of Tourism, Charles ‘Max’ Fernandez to the stage, who gave a warm welcome to the entourage. “Welcome back sailors, I recognise a few of you from last year!” commented Max Fernandez. “The pandemic took away the opportunity to host the number one Caribbean regatta, but our spirits were never dampened and we steered the course and we are here again to complete another week of spectacular competition and fun in our beautiful island paradise.”

The National Anthem of Antigua was sung by Janisha Jacobs before Antigua Sailing Week Race Manager Jaime Torres invited Prize Winners to come to the main stage. All of the CSA, Club and Bareboat Class Winners at Antigua Sailing Week were awarded historic trophies and went home with Keeper Trophies and Locman Italy watches.

Chris & Caroline Body racing J/122 El Ocaso lifted the Lord Nelson Trophy to huge applause. The team from the Royal Southern Yacht Club in the UK is sailed by four members of the Body family; Chris and Caroline race with their two daughters, Jessica and Annabelle Body.

“I am completely flummoxed!” smiled Chris Body. “On behalf of the competitors, I would like to thank Alison, Jamie, Rana and the entire team who create and manage Antigua Sailing Week. These regattas don’t just happen, they take a monumental amount of effort, and I know every competitor really appreciates the effort to make this such a spectacular event. Thanks to all the sponsors who kindly supported ASW and who provide that all so important lubricant to help make this event happen.”

Chris Body continued, “I must say that looking at my wife admiring her new Locman watch this morning makes me hopeful that she might forgive me for spending so much on the boat! A big thank you to all the competitors and not only in our class. It was really great meeting and racing against you guys. As ever, you never give an inch on the race course, but are great fun at the bar. Antigua Sailing Week is one of the best warm water regattas in the world, with a great balance between competitive racing and time ashore, all wrapped up with great and reliable weather and very friendly and welcoming people. Spread the word!”

“I feel very blessed to sail with the Hooligan team,” commented John Evans. “Hooligan is a really good boat. I am ecstatic that I came to Antigua Sailing Week. This is the best sailing regatta that I have ever participated in and there is a long list of those! It’s very well run, very well organised. The Race Committee did an amazing job, and the conditions were just unbelievable. On the last day we had the most wind we have had all week, it was a bit tough but so much fun!”

Third overall and winner of CSA 4 was Chris Woods’ Assuage (GBR) lifting the Catamaran Marina Cup  and the Chippy Fine Yacht Woodwork Trophy. Katy Campbell’s Panacea (CAN) was the winner of the Holtman Cup for the Best Women’s Crew at Antigua Sailing Week.

Built in 1996, the Frers Swan 48 Assuage is proof that a boat that is nearly 30 years old can make the overall podium and win class at Antigua Sailing Week. Chris Woods has beautifully restored Assuage and sails her with family and friends. “She is a lovely boat and I am glad that I brought it back to some fame,” commented Chris Woods. “It has been a week of ups and downs. We busted a few things, but now I am happy as Larry! Assuage is a tricky boat to sail, but when she goes, she absolutely flies at 10 knots upwind! The boat is known by so many people and I am delighted to have raced at Antigua Sailing Week.”

“This is a really good way to finish the season!” laughed Guy Chester. “We have done everything from Barbados Sailing Week, St. Maarten, the BVIs, St. Barths and to finish at Antigua Sailing Week with a win is just fantastic! I first sailed here in Anthony McVeigh’s Dragonfly catamaran, I have sailed with Bernie Evan-Wong’s Taz and Pamala Baldwin’s Liquid, and Robbie Ferron’s Oozlumbird, and on the TP52 Conviction. To bring my own boat back here, sailing it from New Zealand, is just frickin’ awesome!”

“We had an absolutely great week,” commented J-Aguar’s Jim Ryan. “We put this together just a few months ago. We are all dinghy sailors but this is my seventh Antigua Sailing Week and I love it. I first came here 10 years ago when we won the Hamptons Challenge. This year, we worked as a team and we all got along on a great boat. Winning came down to not making mistakes and working hard, and we all still like each other!”

The winner of CSA 5 lifting the Governor General Cup was Tristan Marmousez’s GFA Caraïbes – La Morrigane (FRA). Second was Jules Mitchell’s NSA Spirit (ANT), winning the Grant Thornton Trophy and third was Jean François Terrien’s Sang Neuf (FRA), which was the winner of the Travelers Trophy. Antigua Sailing Week was unfinished business for GFA Caraïbes – La Morrigane, which was second last year by just two points to NSA Spirit.

“It was very nice to win this year to make up for last year,” commented Tristan Marmousez. “This year we had a lot of current and very complicated conditions. We are so happy as we have won in Grenada, St. Maarten, and now in Antigua. We cannot wait for next year!”

Antigua Sailing Week has always had the courage to evolve and this year two new sailing events were introduced, Wingfoil and the RS Elite Class.

The inaugural Antigua Wingfoil Championship Pro Class was especially intense, with local Wingfoiler Idani Edwards and Martinique Wingfoiler Anthony Smith battling for first place. Smith won the final and deciding race by just two minutes from Edwards.

Back in February, Antiguan Optimist Champion Emily Gaillard became the youngest competitor to complete the gruelling RORC Caribbean 600. At Antigua Sailing Week, Emily skippered Outdoor World Yamaha (ANT) to victory in the RS Elite Class, with a crew of Shannoy Malone and Alistair Knoblauch. All three are just 15 years of age and lifted the One Design Trophy as well as the Youth Trophy for Antigua Sailing Week. Second in the RS Elite Class was Paul Deeth’s Da Boom (ANT) and third was Robbie Ferron’s Oozlumbird.

Reggie Williams’ Soverel 43 Legacy from Trinidad and Tobago © Visual Echo

Club Class 1 and the American Airlines Trophy went to Reggie Williams’ Legacy (TRI) after a close battle with Mathias Maus’ Alpha Centauri of London (GER). Third was Moonflower 3 (GBR) with an all-women team skippered by Chloe Need. The Soverel 43 Legacy is part of the history of Antigua Sailing Week; Legacy is the only racing mark of the course, named after the boat.

“My Uncle Douglas was the first builder and operator of Legacy. I was his apprentice in the 80s and for this regatta my son is sailing with us for the first time,” explained Reginald Williams. “We nearly didn’t make it this year; our engine was destroyed on the sail up and we had a new one fitted in Grenada. This year it was a wonderful opportunity to sail Legacy in these conditions, a privilege with this group of people. It has been wonderful and we look forward to coming back next year, and we encourage more boats from Trinidad to come. This regatta has beautiful sailing and great competition. We honour all of the competitors and in particular, Sir Hugh Bailey, who is an icon to our family.”

Sandy was also announced as the recipient of the Jan Santos Trophy in honour of individuals who have shown dedication to Antigua Sailing Week over an extended period of time.

Octogenarian Geoffrey Pidduck was competing at his 52 nd Antigua Sailing Week and was congratulated by 15-year-old Carrack Jones at the prize giving. Pidduck’s advice to the young talented sailor. “Learn from your competition Carrack, and very well done to you and your team. For me, your effort has made this a very enjoyable competition.”

Internationally renowned Antiguan Band Asher Otto & Itchy Feet played a live set on the main stage after the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Final Awards Ceremony with DJ Purist spinning the tunes long into a memorable night.

Spirits high for NY Race Week

Yachting World

  • July 12, 2002

Some of the world's top sailors including Dennis Conner are heading for Newport this weekend to compete in NY YC Race Week

The Newport summer regatta, this weekend, marks the start of New York Yacht Club Race Week presented by Rolex. Race Week at Newport takes places as a four-day handicap racing regatta (13-16 July) and then switches to accommodate three racing days (19-21 July) for 10 one-design classes. Splitting the two sessions is a distance race (17 July) open to all boats entered in either or both halves of the regatta. At the close of registration, 66 boats had entered the regatta’s first half and 84 had entered the one-design segment. Fifty-three boats will compete in the distance race.

“Several of the best boats in our class have come back to Newport after the Bermuda Race and are participating in Race Week,” said J/44 Class Executive Director Tom Castiglione (Sea Cliff, NY), who explained that the event’s second half will serve as his class’s 2002 North Americans. “If there were only one race week in summer you could get to, you’d want to make it this one. It’s who runs it, where it’s run and the way it’s run that makes it one of the best events.”

The biennial regatta was a novelty just five short years ago when it was inaugurated, but now it shines as a jewel in Rolex’s highly polished line of

sponsored sailing events. The host of the regatta is the New York Yacht Club, and the regatta will be centered at its Harbour Court facility. After racing, competitors can enjoy the ambience of the picturesque club house, which boasts Newport Harbour as its backdrop.

“Last time at this event, it blew 12-16 knots everyday,” said Castiglione. “Our first, second and third place positions all came down to being determined on the last day. It’s the guaranteed Newport sea breeze that makes it a lot of fun.”

In its second half, Race Week also will serve as the 1D35 East Coast Regional Championship, Mumm 30 North American Championship, and the J/35 New England Championship. Remaining one-design classes sailing in Race Week are Farr 40, Farr 395, J/80, J/105, J/120 and Melges 24.

For Race Week’s first half, Dennis Conner will be among the many big boat champions competing. He will take to the waters on his 13-year-old Reichel Pugh 50 Stars & Stripes, the namesake of his America’s Cup boat that represents the New York Yacht Club.

“I’m coming back for two days of personal vacation and to sail with my close friends on the boat,” said Conner, who will steer on Sunday and Monday while Tom Whidden, a fellow NYYC syndicate member, takes the helm on Saturday. Referring to his many years of America’s Cup competition in Newport, he added with a laugh, “I’ve done a little sailing here before. It’s one of the greatest places in the world.” Tom Rich of Portsmouth will finish out the racing on Tuesday before taking the boat on the distance race.

Daily prizes will be awarded, with Rolex timepieces awarded to yachts with the best performances among IMS, PHRF and One-Design entrants.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

yacht club spirit week

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

yacht club spirit week

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

yacht club spirit week

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

yacht club spirit week

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

yacht club spirit week

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

yacht club spirit week

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

yacht club spirit week

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Moscow nightlife is not for the faint of heart – and if you’re coming, you better be ready to go Friday and Saturday night into the early morning.

This comprehensive guide to Moscow nightlife will run you through the nuts and bolts of all you need to know about Moscow’s nightclubs and give you a solid blueprint to operate with during your time in Moscow.

What you need to know before hitting Moscow nightclubs

Prices in moscow nightlife.

Before you head out and start gaming all the sexy Moscow girls , we have to talk money first. Bring plenty because in Moscow you can never bring a big enough bankroll. Remember, you’re the man so making a fuzz of not paying a drink here or there will not go down well.

Luckily most Moscow clubs don’t do cover fees. Some electro clubs will charge 15-20$, depending on their lineup. There’s the odd club with a minimum spend of 20-30$, which you’ll drop on drinks easily. By and large, you can scope out the venues for free, which is a big plus.

Bottle service is a great deal in Moscow. At top-tier clubs, it starts at 1,000$. That’ll go a long way with premium vodka at 250$, especially if you have three or four guys chipping in. Not to mention that it’s a massive status boost for getting girls, especially at high-end clubs.

Without bottle service, you should estimate a budget of 100-150$ per night. That is if you drink a lot and hit the top clubs with the hottest girls. Scale down for less alcohol and more basic places.

Dress code & Face control

Door policy in Moscow is called “face control” and it’s always the guy behind the two gorillas that gives the green light if you’re in or out.

In Moscow nightlife there’s only one rule when it comes to dress codes:

You can never be underdressed.

People dress A LOT sharper than, say, in the US and that goes for both sexes. For high-end clubs, you definitely want to roll with a sharp blazer and a pocket square, not to mention dress shoes in tip-top condition. Those are the minimum requirements to level the playing field vis a vis with other sharply dressed guys that have a lot more money than you do. Unless you plan to hit explicit electro or underground clubs, which have their own dress code, you are always on the money with that style.

Getting in a Moscow club isn’t as hard as it seems: dress sharp, speak English at the door and look like you’re in the mood to spend all that money that you supposedly have (even if you don’t). That will open almost any door in Moscow’s nightlife for you.

Types of Moscow Nightclubs

In Moscow there are four types of clubs with the accompanying female clientele:

High-end clubs:

These are often crossovers between restaurants and clubs with lots of tables and very little space to dance. Heavy accent on bottle service most of the time but you can work the room from the bar as well. The hottest and most expensive girls in Moscow go there. Bring deep pockets and lots of self-confidence and you have a shot at swooping them.

Regular Mid-level clubs:

They probably resemble more what you’re used to in a nightclub: big dancefloors, stages and more space to roam around. Bottle service will make you stand out more but you can also do well without. You can find all types of girls but most will be in the 6-8 range. Your targets should always be the girls drinking and ideally in pairs. It’s impossible not to swoop if your game is at least half-decent.

Basic clubs/dive bars:

Usually spots with very cheap booze and lax face control. If you’re dressed too sharp and speak no Russian, you might attract the wrong type of attention so be vigilant. If you know the local scene you can swoop 6s and 7s almost at will. Usually students and girls from the suburbs.

Electro/underground clubs:

Home of the hipsters and creatives. Parties there don’t mean meeting girls and getting drunk but doing pills and spacing out to the music. Lots of attractive hipster girls if that is your niche. That is its own scene with a different dress code as well.

What time to go out in Moscow

Moscow nightlife starts late. Don’t show up at bars and preparty spots before 11pm because you’ll feel fairly alone. Peak time is between 1am and 3am. That is also the time of Moscow nightlife’s biggest nuisance: concerts by artists you won’t know and who only distract your girls from drinking and being gamed. From 4am to 6am the regular clubs are emptying out but plenty of people, women included, still hit up one of the many afterparty clubs. Those last till well past 10am.

As far as days go: Fridays and Saturdays are peak days. Thursday is an OK day, all other days are fairly weak and you have to know the right venues.

The Ultimate Moscow Nightclub List

Short disclaimer: I didn’t add basic and electro clubs since you’re coming for the girls, not for the music. This list will give you more options than you’ll be able to handle on a weekend.

Preparty – start here at 11PM

Classic restaurant club with lots of tables and a smallish bar and dancefloor. Come here between 11pm and 12am when the concert is over and they start with the actual party. Even early in the night tons of sexy women here, who lean slightly older (25 and up).

The second floor of the Ugolek restaurant is an extra bar with dim lights and house music tunes. Very small and cozy with a slight hipster vibe but generally draws plenty of attractive women too. A bit slower vibe than Valenok.

Very cool, spread-out venue that has a modern library theme. Not always full with people but when it is, it’s brimming with top-tier women. Slow vibe here and better for grabbing contacts and moving on.

High-end: err on the side of being too early rather than too late because of face control.

Secret Room

Probably the top venue at the moment in Moscow . Very small but wildly popular club, which is crammed with tables but always packed. They do parties on Thursdays and Sundays as well. This club has a hip-hop/high-end theme, meaning most girls are gold diggers, IG models, and tattooed hip hop chicks. Very unfavorable logistics because there is almost no room no move inside the club but the party vibe makes it worth it. Strict face control.

Close to Secret Room and with a much more favorable and spacious three-part layout. This place attracts very hot women but also lots of ball busters and fakes that will leave you blue-balled. Come early because after 4am it starts getting empty fast. Electronic music.

A slightly kitsch restaurant club that plays Russian pop and is full of gold diggers, semi-pros, and men from the Caucasus republics. Thursday is the strongest night but that dynamic might be changing since Secret Room opened its doors. You can swoop here but it will be a struggle.

Mid-level: your sweet spot in terms of ease and attractiveness of girls for an average budget.

Started going downwards in 2018 due to lax face control and this might get even worse with the World Cup. In terms of layout one of the best Moscow nightclubs because it’s very big and bottle service gives you a good edge here. Still attracts lots of cute girls with loose morals but plenty of provincial girls (and guys) as well. Swooping is fairly easy here.

I haven’t been at this place in over a year, ever since it started becoming ground zero for drunken teenagers. Similar clientele to Icon but less chic, younger and drunker. Decent mainstream music that attracts plenty of tourists. Girls are easy here as well.

Sort of a Coyote Ugly (the real one in Moscow sucks) with party music and lots of drunken people licking each others’ faces. Very entertaining with the right amount of alcohol and very easy to pull in there. Don’t think about staying sober in here, you’ll hate it.

Artel Bessonitsa/Shakti Terrace

Electronic music club that is sort of a high-end place with an underground clientele and located between the teenager clubs Icon and Gipsy. Very good music but a bit all over the place with their vibe and their branding. You can swoop almost any type of girl here from high-heeled beauty to coked-up hipsters, provided they’re not too sober.

Afterparty: if by 5AM  you haven’t pulled, it’s time to move here.

Best afterparty spot in terms of trying to get girls. Pretty much no one is sober in there and savage gorilla game goes a long way. Lots of very hot and slutty-looking girls but it can be hard to tell apart who is looking for dick and who is just on drugs but not interested. If by 9-10am you haven’t pulled, it is probably better to surrender.

The hipster alternative for afterparties, where even more drugs are in play. Plenty of attractive girls there but you have to know how to work this type of club. A nicer atmosphere and better music but if you’re desperate to pull, you’ll probably go to Miks.

Weekday jokers: if you’re on the hunt for some sexy Russian girls during the week, here are two tips to make your life easier.

Chesterfield

Ladies night on Wednesdays means this place gets pretty packed with smashed teenagers and 6s and 7s. Don’t pull out the three-piece suit in here because it’s a “simpler” crowd. Definitely your best shot on Wednesdays.

If you haven’t pulled at Chesterfield, you can throw a Hail Mary and hit up Garage’s Black Music Wednesdays. Fills up really late but there are some cute Black Music groupies in here. Very small club. Thursday through Saturday they do afterparties and you have an excellent shot and swooping girls that are probably high.

Shishas Sferum

This is pretty much your only shot on Mondays and Tuesdays because they offer free or almost free drinks for women. A fairly low-class club where you should watch your drinks. As always the case in Moscow, there will be cute girls here on any day of the week but it’s nowhere near as good as on the weekend.

In a nutshell, that is all you need to know about where to meet Moscow girls in nightlife. There are tons of options, and it all depends on what best fits your style, based on the type of girls that you’re looking for.
