Inside the Glass Onion Yacht—Which You Can Charter for $228,000 a Week

By Katherine McLaughlin

A superyacht photographed from above

Taking place on a private Greek island , the trip in Rian Johnson’s newest Knives Out movie, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, would be undeniably indulgent—if not for the murder mystery and seemingly never-ending plot twists. Still, for a lofty price, you can turn some of the more luxurious moments from the film into a reality. As Robb Report shares, the lavish yacht seen in the beginning of the movie is available for private charter throughout the Mediterranean for $228,000 a week.

A beach club on a yacht

According to Ocean Independence, the on-board beach club is “massive for her category.”

The 151-foot vessel is named Aquarius and is available to the public through Ocean Independence, a company specializing in luxury yacht sales, management, and charters. Delivered by Turkish shipbuilder Mengi Yay in 2016, the ship holds up to 10 people across 5 staterooms. “In a style of her own with her straight bow, she is fully optioned with a lavish beach club and balcony extensions on either side of the salon,” the boat’s description reads. The primary stateroom also comes with two additional private balconies for even more opportunities for indoor-outdoor living and taking in the incredible Mediterranean views.

When it comes to entertainment, Aquarius leaves little to be desired. Her on-board amenities include a gym and exercise equipment, a jacuzzi, and multiple aquatic toys including paddle boards, a water ski, a wakeboard, and snorkeling equipment. Two twin Caterpillar engines power the boat, which can reach top speeds of 26 knots with a cruising speed of 11.5 knots, and a 9-member crew will also be available throughout the charter.

The yacht has plenty of balconies and decks for indoor-outdoor living.

While most would hope their time on Aquarius only resembles the comedic and lighthearted moments from Glass Onion, there is one part of the movie guaranteed to transcend the fictional and real world: The ship captain seen in the movie, Andino, is actually Aquarius ’s real-life captain Ali Göksoy.

The 45m (150ft) superyacht AQUARIUS has wowed audiences in her debut appearance on the thrilling murder mystery Netflix film, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery , which has already proven a huge hit after ranking number one on Netflix’s ‘top 10 Films in the UK today’.

A long-awaited sequel to the original Knives Out film that arrived in 2019, Glass Onion features more opulence and drama as Daniel Craig returns as Detective Benoit Blanc to solve a very layered murder mystery.

While the first  Knives Out  film was set in a very Cluedo-Esque manor house in Massachusetts, USA , the second movie heads to a house called the ‘Glass Onion’ on a private estate on a fictional Greek island called 'Pisceshite Island.'

A number of scenes take place on board yacht AQUARIUS, the first being when the luxury motor yacht transports a group of friends to the lavish private estate of a tech billionaire, but when someone turns up dead, it appears that everyone on the island is hiding their own dark secrets, making each of them a threatening suspect.

Superyacht AQUARIUS - the real star of the show

Delivered in 2016, the Mengi Yay yacht AQUARIUS is the perfect charter platform for yachting vacations spent entertaining in style. Her generous deck spaces play host to a wide range of amenities including a luxurious full-beam beach club with a 3-way opening, an outdoor bar, a Jacuzzi and ample space for sun lounging and relaxing.

Designed for waterfront living, the lavish yacht is home to some impressive leisure and entertainment facilities that make her the ideal charter yacht for socializing and entertaining with family and friends.

Accommodating 10 guests across 5 beautifully decorated cabins, the yacht is extremely versatile for a variety of charter party configurations comprising a beautiful master suite with two private balconies on either side offering sweeping panoramic views and a further 3 double cabins and 1 twin cabin which are situated on the lower deck. The super yacht charter is also capable of carrying up to 9 crew onboard to ensure a seamless and high-end luxury yacht rental experience.

How much does the Glass Onion yacht AQUARIUS cost to charter?

She currently has an asking price of €220,000 for a 7-day charter and cruises the Mediterranean all year round.

Glass Onion Location

A destination offering peace and tranquility like no other.

Glass Onion was filmed in Greece and Serbia, primarily on the luscious island of Spetses , a playground for Greek tycoons and the Global Elite. Oozing old-world glamor, nautical charm and scenic beauty, there is no doubt that this is one of the most exclusive charter regions in the Mediterranean.

what is the yacht in glass onion

Beautiful nature, perfect beaches and a complex history ‒ Spetses is an island that has all three.

Viewers will most likely want to know where the luxurious villa they see on their screens is located and they may even wonder if they can stay there themselves. The answer is yes. Filming for Miles’s luxurious villa took place on the nearby mainland at Villa 20 in the Amanzoe resort near the small town of Porto Heli and you can request to book and stay there this summer if you wish.

Amanzoe Resort

Live like the movie stars.

During production, the cast and crew of Glass Onion reportedly stayed at the Amanzoe resort where filming took place in the summer of 2021.

Luxurious, sophisticated and simply divine, the Amanzoe resort is described as a modern-day Acropolis from which 360-degree views encompass olive groves and the Aegean sea. Created by a team who worked hard and methodically to create a "world-class exclusive resort worthy of the incomparable beauty of Greece", it definitely stands out from the crowd.

The masterpiece of Amanzoe’s villas is the Acropolis-inspired Villa 20, the perfect backdrop for a movie like Glass Onion

With the option to stay in luxurious cabanas, pavilions and exclusive villas, each offering private pools with stunning views and fragrant gardens, the resort caters to everyone's needs and wants. Home to a tranquil wellness center, a private beach and a distinctive beach club, which is a destination in itself, it is certain that guests will feel relaxed from the moment they arrive.

The Amanzoe is currently closed and will reopen for an exciting summer season on the 1st April 2023. Giving you a glimpse of the luxurious lifestyle, guests on a Mediterranean yacht charter can enjoy a night at this resort in one of the best 6-bedroom villas for around €13,500 per night in April while in the middle of summer that increases to €17,729 per night.

Yacht rentals in the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean abounds in outstandingly beautiful cruising grounds that the SuperyachtSet adores. Comprising perennial favorites such as the Balearics , Amalfi Coast and Greece, a private yacht charter here truly never disappoints. From serene anchorages to glittering cities fizzing with life, this destination has it all.

Glass Onion: 9 Behind-The-Scenes Facts About Netflix's Knives Out Sequel

Peering through the dense layers of this fun mystery.

Janelle Monae and Daniel Craig in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

It is no mystery why the 2022 follow-up to Knives Out has won the hearts of most critics , become an enduring hit on Netflix’s trending page , and received a 2023 Academy Award nomination for its screenplay. However, Glass Onion (which is how I will refer to it because writer and director Rian Johnson prefers it without the subtitle , A Knives Out Mystery ), is not without its mysteries beyond the twisted murder case at the center of its story.

Related: Trending On Netflix: The Top 10 Lists For Movies And TV

Well, we decided to pull a Benoit Blanc and get to the bottom of some of the best kept secrets surrounding one of the best movies of 2022 (in our opinion) and one of the best movies released on Netflix in 2022 (or best movies on Netflix ever, for that matter). Regardless of how much you agree with those statements, you may not be able to deny that there are fascinating behind-the-scenes facts to reveal about Glass Onion and we have compiled our most interesting favorites below.

A Beatles Song Inspired The Title, Glass Onion

As a fan of The Beatles, I was just as surprised as Rian Johnson to learn how few people made the connection between Glass Onion and the Fab Four’s eponymous track off of 1968’s The White Album when the film’s title was officially announced in 2022 . In fact, the filmmaker has an interesting story that he revealed to Deadline as to how the song that plays during the end credits inspired the name:

I’d gotten to a point where I had the idea of a central metaphor that Blanc could latch onto and beat like a dead horse. Something that was made of glass. Something that was layered, but the center was in plain sight, and so on. And I thought, OK, well the billionaire is going to have an island, and maybe he has some structure on it that’s made of glass, so… is it a glass castle? Is it a glass palace? I literally opened the music app on my phone and just searched the word ‘glass,’ and ‘Glass Onion’ popped up.

Knives Out is also synonymous with a Radiohead song, but Johnson insisted to the Los Angeles Times that the connection ends at the name and that he -- a massive fan of the band -- had the phrase in his head at the time he was writing. It makes me wonder what tune the franchise’s upcoming third installment could be named after if the filmmaker goes in that direction again.

Netflix Spent Millions For The Streaming Rights To Glass Onion

With all of the cancelled series it has picked up (i.e., Manifest) and nostalgic favorites it has revived (such as That ‘90s Show , a continuation of That ‘70s Show ), Netflix is becoming the Number One place to — not necessarily start, but — continue a franchise. One of the most famous and expensive examples of this is when it acquired distribution rights to Glass Onion .

In 2021, according to The Hollywood Reporter , a “discreet” auction that competitors like Amazon and Apple participated in was closed out when Netflix became the home to the Knives Out sequel (and the series’ upcoming third installment) for $469 million. That is the kind of money that suspects of Benoit Blanc’s cases often kill for.

Daniel Craig Had To Relearn Benoit Blanc’s Accent

Speaking of Benoit Blanc, the gentleman sleuth is known for speaking in a unique “Foghorn Leghorn Southern drawl” as Chris Evans ’ Ransom Drysdale describes in Knives Out . However, recapturing that distinct accent for Glass Onion proved to be a challenge for Daniel Craig.

The British former James Bond actor revealed to Empire that he had forgotten how to speak like the astute private eye since he first originated him in 2019. So, in the hope of avoiding doing a “pastiche,” he worked with an accent coach for months to make sure he sounded as authentic as possible.

Kaley Cuoco Auditioned For Kate Hudson’s Role

While a part of us wishes we could have seen more of the Knives Out cast reprise their roles alongside Craig in the sequel, that would have meant we wouldn't have gotten Glass Onion ’s wonderful ensemble , which also includes Janelle Monae , Edward Norton , and Dave Bautista . Someone who really wanted to be in the sequel, as she recalls in the excerpt from a Glamour interview below, was Kaley Cuoco:

I was convinced [the part was mine]. Kate Hudson ended up getting it. But I was so convinced that my bags were packed for Greece. And then I didn’t get it. I was so devastated. And I’m not [normally] devastated over roles. I had done chemistry reads, I had done Zooms. And I didn’t get it. I cried and I cried all night long. And it went to Kate, who’s great.

I would certainly agree that Kate Hudson — who also got to reunite with Kathryn Hahn nearly two decades after How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days — did a wonderful job as Birdie Jay. Yet, I can also imagine an alternate reality in which the former Big Bang Theory cast member kills it as the self-absorbed fashion designer.

Some Cast Members Had A Say In Their Characters’ Costume Design

Speaking of fashion, the wardrobe choices for the characters in Glass Onion are so exquisite and on-point, that it is surprising that costume designer Jenny Eagan did not get an Oscar nomination as well. Then again, if her designs had been recognized, she technically would have had to share the nomination with the actors.

An official behind-the-scenes featurette about Glass Onion ’s costume design released on YouTube reveals that the clothing choices were a collaborative effort between Eagan and some of the cast members. For instance, Daniel Craig based his look off Cary Grant in To Catch a Thief and Leslie Odom Jr. wanted Lionel’s wardrobe to subvert that of your typical movie scientist.

Stephen Sondheim Helped Get Angela Lansbury In Glass Onion

Another eye-popping element of Glass Onion is all the epic cameos — such as Hugh Grant as Blanc’s husband , Philip, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (a frequent collaborator of Johnson’s) as the voice of “The Hourly Dong,” and, of course, all of the detective’s famous friends. Those appearing as themselves in that group over a Zoom call include Johnson’s Poker Face star Natasha Lyonne, NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Stephen Sondheim, and Angela Lansbury.

The late theatre icon apparently had a hand in convincing the three-time Oscar-nominated Murder, She Wrote actor — who also passed away in 2022 — to show up in Glass Onion . Johnson recalled to the The New York Times mentioning to Sondheim that he wanted to get Lansbury, to which he said, “Oh, Angie — I’m friends with her. Tell her I’m doing it. She’ll do it.” That was that.

The Captain Of Miles’ Yacht Was Played By The Real Yacht’s Captain

Also starring in Glass Onion as himself, apparently, is the captain who runs Miles Bron’s yacht and cheekily refers to the billionaire’s dock as a “Pisceshite.” This man is not a professional actor, but the actual captain of the yacht used in the movie, as Leslie Odom Jr . mentions during a cast reunion video also shared to the Still Watching Netflix channel on YouTube.

In fact, Johnson points out in that same video that the captain — who goes unnamed in the video and unmentioned in the film’s credits, too — “begrudgingly” took on the role, wanting no part of it despite being very familiar with was being asked of him. It is actually not unusual for non-actors to appear as themselves — such as most of the cast of Nomadland — and we are honored to include him on that list, regardless of his reluctance.

Exterior Footage Of Miles’ Estate Was Shot At A Real Greek Villa

Another member of the Glass Onion crew whom I was surprised did not receive any recognition from the Academy this year was production designer Rick Heinrichs, especially for the extremely luxurious appearance of Miles Bron’s (Edward Norton) beautiful Greek private Island. That was, however, until I learned that the estate was not a product of Heinrichs’ mind, but already existed before production.

In a featurette found on the Still Watching Netflix channel on YouTube about Glass Onion ’s production design , Johnson talks about how the first half of principal photography was done at a real estate in Greece called “Villa 20.” A quick look at the villa’s official website will show that Miles Bron’s pool, eclectic garden, and general exterior design are all part of the retreat. The titular glass structure that sits atop the estate was added digitally, however.

A Scrapped Post-Credits Scene Almost Changed The Mona Lisa’s Fate

What makes the conclusion of Glass Onion so explosively entertaining — SPOILER ALERT — is the way Helen Brand (Janelle Monae) really hits Miles where it hurts by also fulfilling his dream of ensuring he will be remembered in the same breath as the Mona Lisa… by burning the real painting (which Bron had rented) to a crisp. This shocking sight could have been a little less devastating had Johnson stuck with his original plan.

In an interview for Empire’s Spoiler Special podcast (via ComicBook.com ), Johnson shared that the movie almost had a post-credits scene revealing that iconic art piece was actually still being held safely at the Louvre and that Bron had unwittingly been given a fake. However, the filmmaker says that, instead of “[pulling] a punch,” he prefers the idea that the Benoit Blanc Universe’s version of the Mona Lisa actually is no more.

As a fun, bonus behind-the-scenes fact, in a feature-length behind-the-scenes video on the Still Watching Netflix channel, Outer Banks cast member Madelyn Cline recalls hearing Johnson giggle behind the camera, which Craig would point out means that they had a good take. If only he could hear his fans giggle at Glass Onion , he would know just how much they thought he did another good job with this one.

The star-studded cast includes Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, with Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista.

Ocean Independence Aquarius Yacht

Aquarius can accommodate up to ten guests in five cabins. Boaters can also unwind on one of several balconies, in the Jacuzzi, or at the sprawling beach club.

Top 200 largest yachts in the world Superyacht Christina O

The most spectacular yachts in film and TV

The glitz and glamour of superyachts makes them ideal stars for everything from box-office blockbusters to the latest Netflix drama...

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Yacht: aquarius.

The 45 metre Mengi Yay motor yacht Aquarius makes an appearance in the opening of the trailer for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery , the follow-up to the Acadamy Award-winning murder mystery Knives Out starring Daniel Craig. Delivered in 2016, the yacht can sleep up to 10 guests and eight crew across her three decks. Aquarius has a top speed of 15 knots that will no doubt be put to the test in Rian Johnson's sequel, which is set to be released on Netflix in December.

Triangle of Sadness

Yacht: christina o.

Dark comedy Triangle of Sadness follows a fashion model celebrity couple who are invited on board a superyacht cruise for the ultra-rich, but the vessel ends up sinking, leaving its guests and crew stranded on an island. The 99.15 metre classic superyacht Christina O is the star of the film, which suitably premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. Christina O was famously owned by Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Socrates Onassis who transformed her from an anti-submarine frigate to a luxury superyacht that has welcomed the likes of Winston Churchill, JF Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra on board. Actor Woody Harrelson joins its star-studded guest list as he plays the role of the captain in the film.

Inventing Anna

Yacht: leight star.

The 42.67 metre motor yacht Leight Star was featured in the Netflix docudrama Inventing Anna, based on the true story of fraudster socialite Anna Delvey. The yacht was renamed Caprilla for the episode and sees protagonist Anna Sorokin stepping out of a Chris Craft tender and onto the swim platform to join her friends in Ibiza (before outstaying her welcome). Leight Star was built in 1984 by the American shipyard Sun State. Her top deck, which is used mostly for sun lounging, can double as a helipad for guests looking to arrive in style.

No Time to Die

Yacht: spirit 46.

A Spirit 46 sailing yacht takes a starring role in the James Bond film  No Time to Die . The 14 metre sailing yacht features in the film, which catches up with Bond following his departure from active service. This is not the first time Spirit Yachts has collaborated with the Bond franchise. In 2006, the 16.4-metre sailing yacht  Spirit  featured heavily in Daniel Craig's first Bond film  Casino Royale  when it became the first sailing yacht to travel up Venice's Grand Canal in 300 years.

Yacht: Planet Nine

The 73 metre explorer yacht  Planet Nine  takes centre stage in Christopher Nolan’s time travelling blockbuster  Tenet . Spanning seven countries,  Tenet  follows protagonist David Washington as he fights to ensure the survival of the whole world. Delivered in 2018, the ice-classed explorer  Planet Nine  features a large helicopter hangar and pair of superyacht elevators connecting all five decks. Elsewhere, the yacht boasts a panoramic observatory lounge, a boot room for heli-skiing activities and a cinema on the upper deck.

6 Underground

Yacht: kismet.

The 95.2 metre  Lürssen  superyacht  Kismet  plays a pivotal role in Michael Bay’s newly released Netflix debut  6 Underground . Starring Ryan Reynolds,  6 Underground  sees a team of international operatives tasked with taking down a notorious dictator. The  Espen Øino -designed superyacht is the setting for the climactic final scenes of the film which sees  Kismet , the final stronghold of the dictator, dramatically blown up.

Yacht: Solandge

Lurssen’s  85.1 metre superyacht  Solandge   took a starring role in the second series of Sky Atlantic’s  Succession . The climactic final episode, in which Brian Cox’s Logan Roy makes a life-changing decision, is based entirely on the yacht and showcases its first-class facilities. Scenes of the episode journeyed from  Solandge’s  massive indoor and outdoor gym on the main deck to the outdoor cinema and nightclub. Elsewhere,  Solandge  features a full dive centre, extensive spa with a sauna, steam room, massage room and beauty salon, as well as a generous swimming pool on the sun deck.

Murder Mystery

Yacht: sarastar.

The 60 metre  Mondomarine superyacht  Sarastar  is the setting for Netflix film  Murder Mystery . The action follows a stagnant married couple played by Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston who join a billionaire on board his family yacht. They are soon caught up in an Agatha Christie-style murder mystery on board and it doesn’t take long for the couple to become prime suspects.

Yacht: Turquoise

The 55.4 metre superyacht  Turquoise  stars in the Sky Atlantic drama  Riviera . Set in the French Riviera, the series follows American art curator Georgina Clios, whose life is upended after her billionaire husband Constantine dies in a yacht accident. Turquoise was built by Turkish yard  Turquoise Yachts  in 2011 with an all-British design team behind her build: her exterior is the work of Ed Dubois  with London studio  H2 Yacht Design  styling her lavish interiors, which can accommodate up to 12 guests and 13 crew.

Yacht: Haida 1929

Classic motor yacht Haida 1929 plays a starring role in Meryl Streep’s exuberant rendition of Money, Money, Money in the hit musical film Mamma Mia!. Built in 1929 , she is one of the oldest yachts still sailing today and offers guests a taste of yachting in the 1930s. She has had 12 owners in her lifetime and saw service in the Second World War and had long been admired by owner No 12 who extensively refitted this piece of maritime history over 16 months. In Mamma Mia! , Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski and Julie Walters are seen riding jet skis and drinking champagne in a dream world on board the superyacht.

The Wolf on Wall Street

M3  (previously Lady M ) played a crucial role in 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street . When Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) hits the big time, he splashes out on the luxury yacht and names it Naomi after his second wife (as played by Margot Robbie). However, the film takes a disastrous turn when the superyacht sinks during a stormy passage between Porto Cervo and Capri — a scene that closely mirrors Belfort’s real-life yachting disaster in 1997. Directed by Martin Scorcese, The Wolf of Wall Street was one of the most successful movies of 2013, grossing more than $116 million at the box office.

Yacht: Aria I

Daniel Craig's recent turns as 007 brought a new generation of beautiful sailing yachts onto the big screen, the most notable of which being Aria I . This 56 metre steel schooner from Pruva Yachting  starred in the 2012 film Skyfall as Chimera , the yacht which carried James Bond to villain Raoul Silva's island hideaway. Preparing the yacht for filming was an arduous process, including re-upholstering inside and out.

American Assasian

Yacht: itama 62.

Michael Keaton and Dylan O’Brien were the big names in the 2017 counter-terrorism thriller American Assassin , based on Vince Flynn’s 2010 novel of the same name, but the real star was surely the Itama 62. This 19 metre speedboat stole the show in a spectacular chase scene, which involved O’Brien jumping onto the moving yacht. Built in Italy as part of the Ferretti Group’s extensive range, the Itama 62 has a top speed of 40 knots thanks to twin MAN V12 engines and can accommodate up to six guests in three cabins.

Yacht: Usher

When US comedy series Entourage was given the Hollywood treatment in 2015 it was only fitting that the party-loving boys should be seen living the high life on a glamorous yacht. Delta Marine ’s 2007 launch Usher (formerly Mr Terrible ) took on a starring role by hosting a yacht party in the film’s opening scene, before lead character Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier) embarks on a disastrous career directing movies.

Bonus entry: Argylle

Tender: sportjet 520.

This spy thriller is directed by Michael Vaughn, the mind behind the much-beloved action-comedy Kingsman . The plot follows Bryce Dallas Howard as author Elly Conway, as she learns that the plots of her best-selling espionage novels are starting to mirror the actions of a real-life spy organisation. The Williams SportJet 520 tender will no doubt feature in several high-octane chase scenes when the film premieres on 24 January 2024. Other big names include Henry Cavill (as the titular spy Argylle), Bryan Cranston and Dua Lipa.

Glass Onion: Inside the Greek hotel used for the Knives Out sequel

what is the yacht in glass onion

By Rachel Wallace

Glass Onion A Knives Out Mystery stars Daniel Craig as Detective Benoit Blanc and hits Netflix on December 23.

Director Rian Johnson’s 2019 whodunit hit  Knives Out took place inside a quintessentially Gothic Revival mansion. Filmed at multiple homes in Massachusetts and on soundstages, it evoked the creepy autumnal aesthetic of many classic murder mystery stories of the past, like  Clue .

The film’s sequel, which is available to stream on Netflix , has a vastly different look. Filmed at Villa 20 at Amanzoe , a luxurious resort in Porto Heli, Greece—part of famous Aman brand’s high-end, high-design hotels—the film once again centers around eccentric detective Benoit Blanc (played by Daniel Craig). This time, Blanc is invited to the home of billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) as he hosts a murder mystery party for a group of A-list pals who call themselves “the disruptors.” Among the group are movie star Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson), politician Claire Debella (Kathryn Hahn), and other such wacky characters.

Early in the film, the group pulls up to Bron’s private island aboard a 151-foot  yacht . (Named  Aquarius in real life, the boat is available to charter for $228,000 a week if you’re so inclined—and, fun fact, ship captain Ali Göksoy has a cameo in the film.) As they touch sand, Bron’s over-the-top home is revealed: a futuristic glass atrium plopped atop a sprawling Grecian villa with a grand outdoor staircase. It is his ode to his favorite bar, the Glass Onion, where he began the tech company that made him rich. This motif is also highly symbolic of his vapid personality. “It ties into Miles’s kind of fetishistic interest in himself and the metaphorical fact that when you look into Miles, there's really nothing there,” production designer Rick Heinrichs tells  Architectural Digest .

Villa 20 “was kind of a modernist take on classic Greek architecture. It had a very lovely indooroutdoor feel to it very...

Villa 20 “was kind of a modernist take on classic Greek architecture. It had a very lovely indoor-outdoor feel to it, very pavilion-like,” says production designer Rick Heinrichs. Here, director Rian Johnson talks to Janelle Monáe on set.

The exterior of the atrium was added in post-production using visual effects, and the team chose this particular vacation villa because it looked to Heinrichs like it could handle the addition of a big glass orb. “That wasn’t something that you could just do on any structure. It’s not that it felt like it was begging for a glass onion stuck on the top of it—but it sort of was, actually. I mean, it turns out that it felt very appropriate that all of these villas ascend to the top pavilion and on top of that was this lovely flower-like structure.” We wonder what the designers of the home— the late  AD100 architect  Edward Tuttle, who was instrumental in creating the design of Aman properties all over the world, and Marios Angelopoulos—would say to this.

“The point of the glass art was trying to do something that was really quintessentially beautiful, almost Brancusi-like in a certain way. That would also be something that the camera could lens through and distort characters,” says Heinrichs.

The interiors at the villa were used to film guest rooms, but the main living area of Miles’s house was built on a soundstage in Serbia. For this set, Heinrichs and the prop department had to create an array of fine art, including a replica of the Mona Lisa which came courtesy of scenic artist James Gemmill. This job was made all the more difficult when a fire engulfed their prop house in Belgrade, causing a scramble to replace the many resin-glass sculptures that had been made for the film. “We immediately had to switch over to real glasswork and redid a lot of the things,” Heinrichs says. “It’s a movie called the Glass Onion, so we knew we couldn't disappoint in making things look like glass.”

Glass Onion : 5 true facts about this Netflix crime movie starring Daniel Craig

Daniel Craig once more dons the suit of Benoit Blanc in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery . Find out more about the filming choices for this Netflix crime movie phenomenon.

A gold-plated cast

Three years after Knives Out , Rian Johson brings us the new adventures of famous detective Benoit Blanc. While Daniel Craig still plays the leading role in the film, the rest of the cast has been completely switched up. In this new investigation in Greece, Benoit Blanc works along the luxurious and glitzy life of a billionaire and his group of friends. A new opus, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery , with a plot as mysterious, thrilling plot, in which Kate Hudson, Edward Norton, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, Madelyn Cline and Leslie Odom Jr. share the spotlight.

Numerous surprise features

And while the main cast is already packed to the gills with talent, Rian Johnson had more tricks up his sleeve. Throughout the film, many celebrities make short but noticeable appearances. Actors Ethan Hawke, Hugh Grant and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, tennis player Serena Williams, basketball player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and actress Natasha Lyonne all show up in the plot of Glass Onion , much to the audience’s delight.

Other notable, nostalgic appearances include actress Angela Lansbury, known for her role in the 1980s-1990s series Arabesque , and composer Stephen Sondheim, who wrote the score for the musical West Side Story . Having died at the age of 96 and 91 respectively, just before the film’s release, these two Hollywood legends play their own roles.

The name Glass Onion is inspired by a Beatles song

To find the name for this new opus, the director first focused on finding an object, a material that would foreshadow the plot, whilst leaving the door open for adaptation and transformation. “I’m always looking for something fun that Benoit Blanc can latch onto. Like an overworked metaphor that he can exploit to death. That’s my starting point. So the notion of glass came to me, because it’s something clear, transparent,” Rian Johnson explained in an interview with Reuters .

Once he had his metaphor, the director just had to find a pop culture reference that would fit and make it a good title. “I literally pulled out my iPhone and typed the word ‘glass’ into my playlist. Because I’m a big Beatles fan, the first thing that came up was Glass Onion,” he said.

Rian Johnson doesn’t like the movie’s full name

In an interview with The Atlantic , Rian Johnson admitted he was very disappointed that there was a reference to the first film grafted onto this newer opus’ title: Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery . “I went to great lengths to make these movies stand alone. Honestly, I’m pissed that we have Knives Out in the title. I want it to just be called Glass Onion ,” said the director. “I understand why, and of course I want everyone who loved the first film to know that this is the new installment in the franchise. But the whole appeal of this saga, for me, is that it’s a new story every time.”

Filming in Greece

For Glass Onion , the production teams chose the classic turquoise landscapes of Greece . They headed for the island of Spetses, in the Aegean Sea, one of Rian Johnson’s favorite spots. They shot the scenes where Benoit Blanc joins the others before embarking on their billionaire friend’s luxury yacht. The superyacht Aquarius, over 92m long, was chosen as the filming location. Then the merry band met in Villa 20, designed by architect Edward Tuttle, near Porto Heli in the Peloponnese. A grand residence that mixes modernity and ancient Greek inspirations, and perfectly meets the scenario’s call for grandeur and luxury.

Glass Onion

Glass Onion is a 24 ′ 10 ″ / 7.6 m monohull sailboat designed by Julian Everitt and built by Evolution Yachts UK Ltd between 1977 and 1984.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Ending Is a Case of Brilliant Simplicity

Rian Johnson explained the ending of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery in the movie’s first act. Which is what makes it so satisfyingly "dumb."

Daniel Craig and Kate Hudson in Glass Onion Ending

This article contains Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery spoilers.

Benoit Blanc is not a man to be confused or befuddled. And to be sure, he is not by the final reel of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery , the second Blanc adventure from writer-director Rian Johnson and star Daniel Craig . However, the hero is frustrated—infuriated even. Midway through the classic expository reveal where the detective puts all the pieces of the puzzle together during the climax, our fair Benoit slumps his shoulders and places his hands in his pockets.

“It’s so dumb,” Benoit sighs. It is then that Kate Hudson’s Birdie Jay, the seeming embodiment of 21st century social media vapidity, adds, “It’s so dumb, it’s brilliant!”

“ NO! ” Benoit cries out. “ It’s just dumb! ”

Ad – content continues below

While we understand M. Blanc’s despair over the stupidity of our culture, for once we have to grit our teeth and agree with Birdie Jay. It is kind of brilliant… if as a metaphor instead of an intricate plan for murder.

As the title suggests, Glass Onion is a glaringly transparent story that through layers of distraction and refracted light obfuscates the emptiness within. And to the credit of Johnson’s script—some might even say its brilliance—it takes until the ending for most viewers to recognize the empty suit at its core: the murderous billionaire Miles Bron ( Edward Norton ).

The wealthy tech guru’s idiocy is never obscured, at least when he’s onscreen. In the first scene Norton is on-set, his character says let’s take a moment to “abreathiate” while welcoming his old friends and Blanc to his private Greek island. Admittedly, I missed that as I was distracted by the sunny opulence of his wealth in the Aegean Sea. However, I caught other times he misspoke shortly afterward, including when he referred to the Aegean as “the Ionian Sea” and when he misused the word “reclamation,” and referred to Benoit Blanc as “the pre-definite detective” instead of saying “preeminent.”

Watching all of those context clues in a movie theater, where it was impossible to rewind and pause to ruminate on the little miscues, I let them fly by as quirks of character—an accepted anomaly in the mythology we build around so many real-life tech billionaires for being “eccentric,” “idiosyncratic,” or just plain odd. After all, before any of these scenes, we were told time and gain that Miles is a genius .

The first scene of the movie, in fact, is Lionel Toussaint (Leslie Odom Jr.) repeating that time and again, almost as if it were an article of faith. One of the unspecified Alpha board members even counters, “This is science, not a religion!”

And yet, what we see afterward isn’t a dull debate over the ethics of an unnamed invention but a wildly intricate puzzle box sent by Miles to Lionel. At a glance, it’s apparent this was designed by a brilliant mind… only we’re asked to ponder later in the movie whether that brilliant mind ever belonged to Miles. Consider this: When he first meets Blanc on his island, Miles literally tells Benoit that “I don’t like to toot my own horn but…” the murder mystery game he designed for the weekend is maddeningly difficult. Not only does Benoit then solve it inside of two minutes, but he also discovers Miles paid novelist Gillian Flynn for its planning!

Everything about Miles is a facade, as flashy as the glass dock that rises in front of his island, and often as ill-conceived since that same showpiece dock makes it impossible for the police to arrive on the island during high tide. Miles couches his stupidity behind the intelligence of others, most notably his former business partner Andi Brandt (Janelle Monáe).

In truth, how Miles betrayed Andi is the real mystery in Glass Onion , the riddle that Johnson’s narrative structure withholds the most critical bit of information about until the third act: Andi Brandt, the woman whose real genius Miles obviously profited from and then discarded, was murdered before the movie even started. The justifiably and righteously angry woman we see provoke and prod all of the party’s revelers is actually Andi’s twin sister, Helen Brand. Helen is the one who actually invited Benoit to the island, which also explains Benoit’s inexplicably friendly, even gushing, eagerness to please Miles in their first extended scene together.

Folks being starstruck and fawning over billionaires is of course part and parcel for American culture. Yet Johnson is challenging the most observant of viewers to reconcile this with the dripping disdain Benoit showered upon the Thrombey clan in Knives Out , a movie that ended with Benoit all but begging for the kind-hearted Marta (Ana de Armas) to leave the WASPy former millionaires destitute and out in the cold.

It’s only once Glass Onion doubles back to Benoit and Helen’s first meeting in a flashback that the pieces fall into place. Benoit will masquerade as what so many Americans are: hopeless admirers of wealth and privilege. And it’s that same odd mix of covetous envy and aspirational idolatry that lets billionaire buffoons get away with running for president, running a social media app into the ground to the cheering applause of their sycophants, and well… murder.

Two murders, actually, in the case of Miles Bron. The irony is that Johnson puts it all there in the first act. While Glass Onion waits until the third act’s flashback to reveal that the only reason Benoit doesn’t immediately suspect Miles of murdering Andi is because only a fool would murder a woman he just had a public falling out with that led to an internationally infamous trial. And Miles is no fool… after all, he’s supposed to be a genius!

However, as soon as Benoit gets to the island (and where the movie actually begins), he is quietly picking up on all the clues that most audience members miss. There’s the way Miles says “infraction point” instead of “inflection point” while offering a rudimentary definition of what it means to be a disruptor; his hastily talking over Duke ( Dave Bautista ) when the big guy is about to say something about Andi; and most crucially there is even the moment where Miles murders Duke in plain sight of his guests… and the viewers at home.

I’ll admit it: I missed it when in full frame we watch Miles place the poisoned glass into Duke’s hands. Like so many shades of refracted light in a glass onion, there was a lot going on to supplant the obvious: Glass Onion editor Bob Ducsay was going into overdrive as he cut shots to David Bowie’s shimmering “Starman.” There was also every laugh and shout of excitement from Duke or Birdie Jay, all of which caused the glass case around the Mona Lisa painting to snap shut in increasingly extreme close-ups; finally Birdie Jay herself was providing the perfect, oblivious distraction as she whirled around in her colorful dress.

Miles even nakedly took advantage of this by shouting, “Look at that dress!” as he placed the lethal drink into Duke’s hands. And I wager most viewers did look at that dress in the foreground and miss the foul deed being committed also in the frame. Afterward, once Duke’s last death rattles subsided, Miles recalls how they must’ve accidentally switched glasses and an insert shot shows the event occurring as how Miles tells it.

But viewers already saw what really happened. And those who missed it should still be suspicious. Again, we’ve all seen irrefutable evidence that “Miles Bron is an idiot!”

The fact that so many viewers likely struggle to reach that conclusion until Benoit lays it out for us at the end of Glass Onion is twofold. Firstly, Bron is a great confidence man and Ed Norton remains, as ever, an incredibly charismatic screen presence. The second, however, is we’re so easily wowed by the power and status of a rich man that it becomes commonplace to overlook his deficiencies.

All of the guests at the party, including Duke who Miles doesn’t even hesitate to murder in cold blood, help hide this truth. They need his money even as they envy it, and they go along with whatever lie Miles spins to help build his self-mythology. Before the movie even starts, they turned on the real Andi and pretended that Miles came up with the idea for Alpha. They do it again, too, when Benoit proves to them that Miles killed both Andi and Duke. They all see the napkin, as well as how Miles quickly destroys the one irrefutable piece of incriminating evidence.

But they still will still sell their friends out, not to mention their souls, to bask in the wealth and privilege that comes from pretending Miles is a genius and helping the rest of the world believe it too. It is only when someone like Helen robs Miles of that power that they turn on Miles like hyenas at the end of The Lion King . The king is wounded; the king is prey.

Still, given how real life events tend to play out, it’s hard to imagine Miles ever sees the inside of a prison cell for the murders he committed. Too many people have a vested interest in carrying water for those good at making money (if little else). There will soon be others eager to build new layers of a glass onion that can hide the stupidity within.

Sorry Benoit, it’s a pretty brilliant metaphor, even if the implications about our society are numbingly dumb.

The superyacht world is speculating that Mark Zuckerberg just bought this 118-meter boat

  • The 118-meter superyacht Launchpad made her maiden voyage last week.
  • The yacht world is speculating that her owner is Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
  • Here's what we know about the luxury vessel.

Insider Today

In the world of superyachts , privacy is the most valuable asset. It can be next to impossible to discern the details of a superyacht transaction — and that's particularly true if the vessel in question is worth nine figures.

Yet some in the boat blogging world are speculating that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is the new owner of Launchpad, a megayacht currently moored in Fort Lauderdale, Florida after she made her maiden voyage from Gibraltar to St Maarten last week. Launchpad clocks in at 118 meters long, about nine meters shorter than Jeff Bezos' superyacht Koru .

The transaction could not be confirmed, with yacht world insiders declining to share what they know and representatives for Zuckerberg not responding to a request for comment from Business Insider. In the past, reports about Zuckerberg owning superyacht Ulysses have proven false.

"It is Feadship's standard policy to never divulge any information about our yachts with reference to ownership, costs, or delivery, etc," Feadship, the ship's builder, wrote to BI. "Whether it is an 18-meter Feadship from the 1960s or a 118-meter Feadship from the 21st century, we do not share private information."

But Zuckerberg's name has been connected to Launchpad for a few months now, beginning in December when reports swirled that he visited Feadship's shipyard in the Netherlands.

Then, earlier in March, yachting bloggers like eSysman SuperYachts and Autoevolution started speculating that he officially snagged the boat, originally built for a sanctioned Russian businessman, at a $300 million price tag. (While that's a seemingly huge amount, it's still less than 0.2% of Zuckerberg's $177 billion net worth.)

Another clue that might point to US ownership is that the yacht bears the flag of the Marshall Islands, a US territory and commonplace for American buyers to register their ships, according to public marine tracking.

If Zuckerberg were to have bought Launchpad, he would join a cohort of superyacht-owning tech billionaires . Along with Bezos, the likes of Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison and Google cofounders Sergey Brin and Larry Page have purchased impressive boats with even more impressive amenities.

SuperYacht Times , an industry publication and intelligence platform, has some of the best images of the yacht. Photos show a swimming pool on her main deck and a large helipad.

While less is known of the interior, a vessel of her size can likely sleep dozens of guests and crew and may have amenities like an expansive gym where Zuckerberg could practice his jiu-jitsu or a spa with a massage area. We suspect there's also space for plenty of toys — which could include his viral hydrofoil foil .

Users ditch Glassdoor, stunned by site adding real names without consent

Glassdoor, where employees go to leave anonymous reviews of employers, has recently begun adding real names to user profiles without users' consent, a Glassdoor user named Monica was shocked to discover last week.

"Time to delete your Glassdoor account and data," Monica, a Midwest-based software professional, warned other Glassdoor users in a blog. (Ars will only refer to Monica by her first name so that she can speak freely about her experience using Glassdoor to review employers.)

Monica joined Glassdoor about 10 years ago, she said, leaving a few reviews for her employers, taking advantage of other employees' reviews when considering new opportunities, and hoping to help others survey their job options. This month, though, she abruptly deleted her account after she contacted Glassdoor support to request help removing information from her account. She never expected that instead of removing information, Glassdoor's support team would take the real name that she provided in her support email and add it to her Glassdoor profile—despite Monica repeatedly and explicitly not consenting to Glassdoor storing her real name.

Although it's common for many online users to link services at sign-up to Facebook or Gmail accounts to verify identity and streamline logins, for years, Glassdoor has notably allowed users to sign up for its service anonymously. But in 2021, Glassdoor acquired Fishbowl, a professional networking app that integrated with Glassdoor last July. This acquisition meant that every Glassdoor user was automatically signed up for a Fishbowl account. And because Fishbowl requires users to verify their identities, Glassdoor's terms of service changed to require all users to be verified.

While users can remain anonymous, this change raises some potential concerns about data privacy and anonymity, Aaron Mackey, a lawyer for the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), told Ars.

The EFF regularly defends Glassdoor users from being unmasked by retaliating employers. Particularly for employees who fear retaliation for reviews, Mackey said that Glassdoor users could historically choose never to share their real names, and the company now storing names for all users makes it much more likely that users could be linked to their reviews should Glassdoor's data ever be subpoenaed or leaked. That's what had Monica so concerned, too.

"Glassdoor now requires your real name and will add it to older accounts without your consent if they learn it, and your only option is to delete your account," Monica's blog warned. "They do not care that this puts people at risk with their employers. They do not care that this seems to run counter to their own data-privacy policies."

Monica soon discovered that deleting her Glassdoor account would not prevent them from storing her name, instead only deactivating her account. She decided to go through with a data erasure request, which Glassdoor estimated could take up to 30 days. In the meantime, her name remained on her profile, where it wasn't publicly available to employers but could be used to link her to job reviews if Glassdoor introduced a bug in an update or data was ever breached, she feared.

"Since we require all users to have their names on their profiles, we will need to update your profile to reflect this," one Glassdoor employee wrote while reassuring her that "your anonymity will still be protected."

"No one has the ability to see your user profile and the contents within it, meaning no one, including your employer, will be able to see your details," Glassdoor's employee wrote.

"I do not consent," Monica responded. "I would delete my account before allowing that."
