Gulet Cruising

sailing chef gulet

No sailing experience required, these gulets are fully crewed with a professional captain, chef and up to 5 other crew who will look after you in style.

Turkish gulets are attractive wooden motorsailers, varying in size from 25 – 36metre some accommodating up to 20 guests. This makes them ideal for a large family or a group of friends getting together for a luxury holiday cruising the Turquoise Coast.

Depending on your itinerary you will set off after breakfast and visit two different places before anchoring for the night. Overnight stops vary from either a small village, a lively town or in a secluded bay. Meal times will depend upon cruising schedules and the wishes of all on board. Dinner served on the aft deck is usually the highlight of the day; a long leisurely meal sitting under the stars listening to the water lapping at the hull of the Gulet.

All cabins have a double or twin beds. Some gulets have triple cabins with a double bed plus a single bed. They have air-conditioning, en-suite shower/WC with hot and cold water. Deluxe gulets will have hairdryers and HD TV’s in all cabins.

As well as exploring the stunning coastline you may wish to enjoy some watersports along the way. Equipment varies from each yacht, generally you can expect to find SUP’s, kayaks, snorkelling gear and fishing equipment on board. If you prefer to just chill out you can relax on the sundeck situated at the front of your gulet with a long refreshing drink and a good book.

What is a Gulet boat? A General Overview

A gulet is a wooden classic yacht built usually in Bodrum or Marmaris from the southwestern coast of Turkey . The average size of gulet is 20 to 30 meters length and feature 4 to 8 cabins. Gulets are used nowadays for private charter in different countries. But to find and book a perfect gulet for private charter , you will need to know more about the categories of gulets and the difference between each one, also how the preparation before during cruise as well as the service on board. Gulets are available to charter in Croatia , Turkey, Greece or Italy.

A) Price Difference Between Gulet Boats

Sometimes looks can be deceiving and that phrase can also apply to a gulet yacht because sometimes they can appear so similar but yet have a huge price difference between them. There are 3 categories of gulets namely; Standard, Deluxe, and Luxury. Below are some of the things that help distinguish the price of a gulet:

Crew

1.) Crew on gulet

The crew on board a gulet can define your trip. An excellent crew on board can make your cruise much more enjoyable. A more experienced and knowledgeable captain knows how to sail and all the best places to stop at and this can absolutely make your cruising experience fantastic.

Luxury gulet cruises

2.) Maintenance of the gulet

Maintenance, as well as the age of the gulet, will influence the final price of gulet charter. A gulet in fine and properly maintained condition will surely command a higher charter price than a gulet in average condition.

3.) Services & equipment

The more services and amenities are available on a gulet, the more expensive it will become. For example, few gulets that offer water boarding equipment, Jacuzzi, fully furnished bar, posibility of having a babysitter on board etc. will generally attract a hefty price tag.

Also, Gulet cabins are not as large as hotels room so it is always best to be reasonable when it comes to packing. Bring only the important things, no need for overpacking.

Here a few things that you must bring with on your gulet cruise

A novel or book that you enjoy reading

We can help you plan and organize everything.  You can choose to swim, sunbathe, go scuba diving go on guided tours or even visit landmarks and historic sites. The choice is yours!

D) Services on Board

Every gulet comes with crew members. However, the number of crew members will be decided by the size of the gulet. The quality of crew on board is equally important as the gulet you choose. You are better off with a competent professional crew in a standard gulet than a bad crew in a luxury gulet.

For smaller gulets , there will be lesser crew members on board and vice versa. Below you’ll find a list of crew members and their duties on board a gulet.

CAPTAIN : every ship needs a captain and so does every gulet. The captain has the final say about the route of the gulet and he coordinates sailing and navigation. The captain is the best person to show you the most amazing places on your cruise.

Lunch-is-Being-Served

CHEF: after the captain comes your able chef. The chef is responsible for all the meals  prepared and shared on board. He has the power to either make or mar your cruise. So hope for a great chef on board your cruise.

WAITER: a waiter will work alongside the chef to ensure that meals are served properly and he can also help with the dishes and other small kitchen tasks.

SAILOR:  a sailor is like an understudy to the captain. The sailor takes care of all the navigation and sailing responsibilities. He ensures that everything related to sailing is in great condition.

HOSTESS: hostess is common only on luxury gulets. They are responsible for cleaning your cabins, serving you drinks and snacks and managing the salon. Sometimes they can help out with your kids too.

So, your crew members on board are very important and if you have the right crew on board our gulet cruise, you will most certainly enjoy your vacation and gulet cruise.

Ultimate guide to a gulet sailing experience

gulet-sailing-experience

Gulets are classic handmade wooden yachts very unique to Turkey and are mainly built in Bodrum and Marmaris on the southwestern coast of the country. They are traditionally two-masted or three-masted vessels about 20 to 30 metres long.

Gulets

What can I expect from a gulet sailing experience?

A gulet sailing experience is nothing short of idyllic. The Mediterranean coastline in Turkey is beautiful with numerous islands dotted off-shore just waiting to be explored.

Each gulet cruise will have multiple breaks in different scenic bays, small fishing villages, with lots of stops for swimming and snorkelling. You can also bathe in hot springs, see some ancient temples and churches, and enjoy great Turkish and Greek food on the islands.

Gulet

Will we sail all day?

At night we find a beautiful bay or seaside village to moor up in, with other gulets as your neighbours. In good weather conditions, you sail around three to four hours per day. The captain may sail a bit longer to make up time if the weather didn't permit more sailing the day before.

seaside village

What can I do on board the gulet?

During your time on board and sailing you do little bits of nothing and truly have a holiday. Swimming, tanning and laying around on the deck relaxing, together with hearty meals are the things to look forward to.

The crew also keep basic snorkelling equipment on board for anyone wishing to spot some sea life during one of the many stops.

Inside the Gulet

What facilities can I expect on board the gulet?

Although the gulets can look similar from the exterior, internally some are extremely luxurious whilst others are more basic.

Traditionally Gulets were purely sail-powered, but these days also have diesel engines to help them along if the wind is still.

All gulets feature comfortable below deck cabins, the vast majority with en-suite bathrooms (toilet, basin, shower), a spacious indoor common area also known as the saloon, and a large deck that is decorated with cushions.

Gulets have between two and ten cabins, depending on the size of the vessel.

The gulets we like to use most have set departure dates that anyone can join and have six en-suite cabins, carrying up to 12 people in total.

Gulet

When is the best time to go on a gulet sailing experience?

The peak season for gulet sailing is from July to August, with the shoulder seasons of June and September also popular and a little cheaper. On some routes, the boats operate into May and October.

Our shared boat itineraries from Marmaris to Fethiye are four days, from Bodrum to Gokova and back to Bodrum eight days, and our tours from Marmaris to Fethiye and back to Marmaris are also eight days long.

Some of these tours take in several Greek islands along the way. All of these start and endpoints are easily accessible by domestic flights from Istanbul and many low-cost airlines also fly directly into Bodrum and Dalaman (which serves both Fethiye, around 45 minutes away and Marmaris, which is just under a two-hour drive).

We can arrange transfers to and from the airport and the start/finish of your gulet cruise on request.

Lunch on the Gulet

How big is the crew on a gulet?

Your crew is made up of a captain, a chef and three to four helpers depending on the size of the vessel.

Gulet crew

What meals can I expect on a gulet sailing experience?

You are served three main meals per day as well as a tea time refreshment. All meals are served on deck.

Breakfasts are typical Turkish spreads such as olives, cheeses, fruits, bread, pickles and yoghurts.

Lunches are light yet hearty and include items such as pasta, salads, rice and stews.

Dinners are feasts in the form of barbeques whether meat, chicken or fish, served with salads and sides. On the gulets, we enjoy the meals around one large table and everyone on board eats together, which is an essential part of Turkish life.

After dinner, the guests turn in for the night. Despite having their own private cabin, many people prefer to sleep on the deck as the summer nights are warm and tranquil and its a great pleasure to sleep under the stars while hearing the soft sounds of the waves lapping ashore or against the boat.

Overall, gulet cruises are one of Turkey's tourism highlights and one of the country's great holiday experiences. They can be enjoyed on their own as a short holiday, or easily added onto a longer stay in the country, perhaps as an extension onto one of our other Turkey tours.

What is Gulet and How to Charter One

Gulet is a traditional wooden motor-sailing vessel meant for comfortable cruising. The history of gulets is somewhat veiled in secrecy. It remains uncertain how gulets got their name - whether it comes from the Italian word "guletta" or the French word "goullette". This schooner type of vessel is used as a sweeping net, trawl net or sponging vessel in Turkey in the Aegean and Mediterranean.

Gulets we know today are known as the Bodrum type of schooners. They date back to the beginning of the 1970s when they were created as a result of the need to carry tourists who began visiting the Aegean region and especially Bodrum and Marmaris at the end of the 1960s, to nearby bays. These gulets had chambers and seating on the back of the deck as opposed to gulets used in fishing or sponging till those years.

Although charter gulets do sail when the winds allow, they are most of the time propelled by engine power . They are configured as motorsailers, with diesel engines to provide primary power, while sails offer additional strength.

Gulets have a raised bow, a broad, flat stern, the main foremast and a secondary mast aft. Their broad beam provides plenty of deck space and spacious cabins below decks.

Gulet Charter

Gulet Charter Types and Services

Gulets come in many sizes , ranging from small 15-meter-long craft to luxurious 33-meter air-conditioned vessels with every convenience and luxury imaginable. Charter gulets offer hotel-like accommodation in comfortable air-conditioned cabins with bathrooms and enough storage for all your luggage. Charter gulets also have plenty of communal space - a large salon with a bar, lots of deck space for sunbathing and other activities, as well as an outside dining and lounge area at the stern. Gulet's stern deck is broad with a wide cushioned bench perfect for lounging , and a large table for games, drinks and meals. The salon is spacious and high enough for somewhat taller guests, with enough table space to seat all travellers for meals, meetings or evening entertainment.

Charter gulets have an experienced and professional crew that comprises a captain, sailors, and a chef. Their job is to take care of your safety and provide you with comfort during your cruise, while the chef will prepare you fresh meals with high-quality local ingredients.

There are two gulet charter types - a private gulet charter and a cabin charter.

A private gulet charter offers you ultimate comfort and privacy , as well as high flexibility regarding the menu, itinerary, and provisioning. A charter gulet's crew is wholly dedicated to you and your party.

A cabin charter is a more economical and more convenient alternative to chartering the entire boat since you do not have to have company to charter a cabin . This is a pleasurable way of vacationing that allows you to meet different people . However, you do not have complete freedom since the itineraries and ports of embarkation and disembarkation are fixed and cannot be altered.

B&B Gulet is ideal to charter for you and your partner. If you think the whole sailboat would be too big for you but you still want to enjoy that unique feeling only sailing can bring, opt for Bed & Breakfast Gulet . You get a bedroom and breakfast. Hence the name. We can promise that on a gulet, it's never boring. You will meet new people and it is always dynamic. That's the list of B&B Gulets.

Gulet Sunbathing Area

The all-inclusive gulet charter is a whole different story. You will also be provided with a bed but the difference between a B&B Gulet charter and an All Inclusive is that an All Inclusive gulet charter gives you the full package for the biggest enjoyment. You wouldn't have to worry about a thing. All meals are being prepared for you and the same goes for the drinks too. Of course, one always can choose their package which can be tailored to your specific taste . For example, you can drink only soft drinks without alcoholic beverages, or you can decide to skip dinner and eat in a restaurant. The choice is yours to make and with an all-inclusive gulet charter, you have many of them.

Gulet Charter Holidays

By chartering a gulet , you get a different kind of sailing holiday. It is a very comfortable and carefree cruise on a boat that offers quality accommodation, as well as privacy and the best service possible . Another benefit of a charter gulet is the possibility to make the itinerary according to your wishes.

Gulet Food Friends Eating

Gulet charters vary in size, boat quality, service, and equipment. The higher the price, the more you get for your money. Charter gulets usually have three to eight cabins providing accommodation for up to sixteen guests. A typical gulet charter agreement includes the gulet , crew , insurance , and fuel for 4-5 hours of sailing per day without port taxes and fees. Half board is in many cases included in the price.

Typical Day on a Gulet Charter

A typical day on a gulet ship is not as different from a day on board a sailboat . Except there is less sailing done. The first day on board a gulet looks like this.

Upon the arrival of the gulet, you are assisted into your cabin. Once you settle, there will be a welcome meeting held on deck. This meeting will also include the briefing regarding the route, as well as the security briefing about life on board.

The cruise starts right after the meeting, or the following day, depending on the weather conditions and guests’ arrival times. The usual duration of cruising is 3 to 4 hours per day . Charter gulets usually visit a bay or two every day. The best part of the day is spent sunbathing , swimming in some lovely bay, using the boat's fishing equipment, water-skiing, snorkelling or something else, depending on what the gulet is equipped with. You can also spend time reading or playing games. If you moor in a port, you can spend the day sightseeing and exploring the shore around the port. Dining is normally outdoors, on the aft deck, in a port or anchored in some secluded bay, depending on the guests’ wishes.

Evenings are spent moored in a port or anchored outside the harbour, depending on the availability of places in the port and the preferences of the guests. Guests can also spend the evening outside the charter gulet, exploring the port town, having dinner in a restaurant or enjoying the local nightlife.

Sailing in Turkey: A Guide to a Gulet Cruise Along the Turquoise Coast

Sailing in Turkey along it’s Turquoise Coast is a magical way to spend a holiday in this beautiful country.

Stretching from the bustling port of Fethiye, to the resort town of Antalya, this coastline has been dubbed the Turquoise Coast for its twinkly blue warm seas. Backed by mountain ranges for almost its entire length, their slopes drop precipitously down to quaint fishing villages and the coastal highway which twists and turns with the coast. Lush pine forest, sandy beaches and sheer cliffs add drama, and the hundreds of tiny secluded coves and bays are tucked away, only accessible by water.

The most popular way to explore the Turquoise coast is by sailing, and the traditional wooden gulet cruise boat is a fantastic and authentic way to do this.

If you’re looking to spend long, lazy days onboard a typical Turkish boat, with glorious weather to boot, then a sailing trip in Turkey is for you. I recently spent three nights on board a gulet, sailing from Fethiye to Olympus, near Antalya with Alaturka Cruises enjoying a sailing trip along the Turquoise coast, on the route often referred to as the ‘blue cruise’. I tucked into delicious fresh seafood, explored ancient ruins, enjoyed drinks in lively fishing ports and jumped into the warm, calm seas for three days, and it was just brilliant. So here’s my guide to the Turquoise Coast, including how to choose a company to sail in Turkey with and what to do in each port of call. Enjoy reading and have fun planning your own sailing trip to Turkey!

Sailing in Turkey – Essential Things To Know

sailing in turkey

How to get to the Turquoise Coast

Depending on which direction you want to sail in, you need to fly to Fethiye or Antalya. Turkish Airlines and Pegasus both fly domestically from Istanbul and several other Turkish destinations to these seaside ports. You can also reach these towns by bus or train, which you can read more about in my guide to using public transport in Turkey.

From the UK or other European destinations, in the summer months (April to October), many airlines fly to Fethiye or Antalya and you should be able to catch a good deal.

When is the best time to go sailing in Turkey

For prime weather conditions, the peak summer season from May to September is best. In these months, the crowds do swell but the weather is best and you can almost guarantee long, sunny, hoy days – perfect for sailing trips in Turkey!

best time to go sailing in Turkey

How to choose a company for a Turkey sailing trip

It might seem a little overwhelming as so many companies offer gulet cruises in Turkey. For two day or longer trips, I would definitely recommend Alaturka Cruises . I found them online in advance of my visit. Not only did they have excellent reviews online, but their email support beforehand was brilliant. The price was great value and the dates worked perfectly for my two week Turkey itinerary .

The gulet boat that we sailed the Turquoise Coast on was really well-maintained and well-sized for the number of passengers on board. It was so hot during our sailing trip in late August that they recommended we slept out under the stars on deck. We slept on these comfy sun-loungers and it was amazing sleeping with a warm breeze. The crew with Alaturka were fantastic. They were really attentive and fun, but not overbearing at all. We had a crew of three Turkish guys who took such great care of us and gave us great tips and suggestions. I joined the gulet cruise as a solo female traveller and didn’t feel uncomfortable once.

The other passengers were from all over the world – including a family from Saudi Arabia, a couple from South Africa and the US, a few other Brits and Americans. Everyone got on so well and the atmosphere was brilliant. With Alaturka, you could also rent your own private gulet cruise boat or yacht with crew if you had your own big group.

What to pack for a sailing holiday

Depending on the company you go with, it’s unlikely you’d need to bring any bedding or towels. However, you will need lots of suntan lotion, swimwear and hats. The sun can be very strong and there may only be a certain amount of shade onboard. The gulet boats normally have quite a few inflatables and they’re nearly always full board.

Every sailing company will have its own policy for alcohol on board. Our gulet cruise with Alaturka offered a self-service bar with an honesty tab, therefore we didn’t need to bring our own alcohol on board.

I would recommend one or two evening outfits for the nights you dock in or near a port for the option to go out in the evening.

sunset on the turquoise coast

Where to stay before or after the sailing trip

The main sailing routes are Fethiye to Olympus, or the other way round.

Fethiye offers many accommodation options. One of the best luxury hotels is the Club Tuana, you can check rates here .

Otherwise you can find hundreds of other options covering all price ranges on Booking.com here .

In Olympus, there is the very unusual offering of treehouses in this amazing valley town.

Some of the best options include:

  • Turkmen Treehouses
  • Kadir’s Treetop Houses
  • Olympus Deep Green Bungalows

Towns to visit along the Turquoise Coast, Turkey

Although it was the starting point to my gulet cruise in Turkey, Fethiye was possibly my least favourite town along the coastline. The town has experienced some mass overdevelopment in the past few decades and I imagine much of its charm has been lost.

I don’t know why, but before I arrived, it seemed to think Fethiye was going to be a quaint village so I was even more disappointed. That being said, it is the starting point for many sailing trips in Turkey so you don’t necessarily need to spend too long there. Its harbour is pretty beautiful but I didn’t particularly like the surrounding streets and restaurant areas.

Some of the key attractions in and around Fethiye include the ancient city of Kadyanda and the abandoned ancient Greek village of Kaya Köyü.

sunset on the Turquoise coast

Butterfly Valley

The first stop for many boats departing from Fethiye is the famed Butterfly Valley. This beautiful secluded cove is only reached by boat.

Its important to know that this beach isn’t sand, but instead, lots of tiny sharp rocks – really painful.

The beach sits at the entrance to a vast canyon, where there is also a cool off-the-radar back-to-basics campsite and a low-key bar and restaurants offering a cool hippy chilled vibe.

It’s called Butterfly Valley as it’s home to a butterfly farm, were there’s a huge diverse range of butterflies. August (when I visited) was not the season to see the butterflies, but the ones I did see were very colourful.

Butterfly valley, Turkey

Ölüdeniz is one of the most famous beaches in Europe. This stunning beach is regularly voted as one of the most beautiful, so I was really excited to dock here.

It really is a beautiful stretch, but as with many gorgeous beaches around the world, it certainly draws crowds and is pretty touristy.

One of the most popular activities to do in Ölüdeniz, and even in Turkey is paragliding. You can arrange this through your gulet cruise organisers, when you arrive in Ölüdeniz or in advance through GetYourguide. Book your paragliding jump here!

No matter which company you pick to go paragliding with, the experience is the same.

You depart from the centre of Ölüdeniz in a minibus with all of the paragliding kits and crew on board.

It’s one very long and perilous drive to the top of Babadag Mountain. I wondered a few times if the van was genuinely road-worthy enough, but we made it.

Ölüdeniz is one of the highest commercial locations in the world where you can paraglide. Together with the breathtaking views and consistently good weather, it is also one of the best places in the world to paraglide.

Once you reach the top, it takes no more than five minutes to jump into the gear and attach the parachute. You run down a short runway with your paragliding guide before, bam, you’re in the air.

We flew straight through the clouds, which was much like a warmer shower, before swerving sharply and emerging into the most spectacular view.

I was really impressed with my guide who I felt really wanted to make it an epic experience for me. He was very keen on making sure we tons of awesome photos and videos, and he really worked the ropes to create a stomach twisting experience. It was amazing!

Aside from paragliding, Ölüdeniz is also the starting point for the Lycian Trail, one of Turkey’s most iconic hiking routes.

In Ölüdeniz, there are also some great bars and cafes to enjoy some time in if you don’t feel like paragliding.

Paragliding in Olu Deniz

The beautiful harbour town of Kaş has a lot to offer and is a great town to visit along the Turquoise Coast. Its charming laneways are lined with interesting boutique stores, cute cafes, lively beach bars and metres of tumbling bougainvillea.

This area is also known for fantastic diving and many dive operators run trips straight from Kaş. Our boat trip with Alaturka permitted enough time to spend the afternoon diving, which was great.

We enjoyed fantastic cocktails at Mumi Cafe Beach. This beach bar had had an awesome atmosphere during the day, and I would highly recommend.

On the day we were in Kaş, it so happened to be Victory Day in Turkey. This meant that the evening was absolutely pumping. Hundreds of Turks had travelled from all over the country to revel in the town. It was an amazing experience as a tourist.

Exploring Kas in Turkey

The next stop along the coast is Kekova, and the magnificent Sunken City here – a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Kekova is home to incredible underwater ruins that were submerged following an earthquake. This area was once a prominent town in the Byzantine and Lycian eras, but is now completely deserted, except for a handful of goats.

This is a no walk, no diving zone. But many boats do sail past each day slowly to take in the incredible site. You can see rooms, staircases and doorways above the sea level, as well as make out pathways and more rooms under the water level. Luckily the water is completely translucent, and is one of the most unusual sites I have ever seen.

Underwater ruins

Kaleköy and Simena Castle

Along the Turquoise Coast, this tiny, traditional village was one of my favourite spots. Visiting this tiny hillside hamlet was like a step back in time. The ancient Simena Castle is located at the top of the village and is well worth a visit. It takes around 10 minutes of hiking through the tiny village and up into the hill. At the top, you’ll find the old fortress, once a notable Lycian settlement. Here you will find an incredible panoramic vista over the Gokkaya bay. The heat can be particularly intense here and despite it being quite a short hike, we ran out of water.

The tiny laneways of the village are lined with local women (and children) selling their homemade souvenirs. They were not pushy at all and I bought several lovely bracelets here.

Simena castle on Turkey's Turquoise Coast

Lastly, the final spot along the Turquoise Coast to visit (or first if you’re doing this route in reverse) is the hippie town of Olympos.

An odd mix of travellers descend on this incredibly beautiful town, nestled in a canyon and surrounded by fragrant forest. It has a tucked away beach and an atmosphere that’s really quite unique. Visitors stay in ‘treehouses’, and the bars are leafy, basic and so, so chilled. If have the time, this is a great place to finish the trip and spend a few extra nights.

sailing in Turkey

So that concludes my guide to sailing in Turkey and exploring the Turquoise Coast by traditional gulet boat. I hope this guide is useful. both for choosing a tour company and find out about the ports. As mentioned, this route is often referred to as ‘the blue cruise’.

If you’re considering a longer trip, you might find my  two-week Turkey itinerary  here useful. I’ve also written guides to  Bodrum ,   Pamukkale ,  Ephesus , Istanbul  and  Cappadocia  here.

Have you sailed along Turkey’s Turquoise Coast? I’d love to hear if so. Drop a comment below, and if you’ve enjoyed this post, feel free to share using the below links!

The Turkish coastline you visited looks stunning. I would love to do a boat ride around here. 🙂 Looks like you had a whale of time especially swimming in the water.

Your pictures are amazing I had to look at them twice! What an experience that must have been, I never knew Turkey was so breath taking. The paragliding… Wow! I really enjoyed your post looks like a great future vacation.

My hubs is currently standing over my shoulder absolutely drooling at the thought of being able to do this kind of sailing. Those views are so magnificent what a lovely way to travel, peaceful, quiet and so beautiful.

Tehe, looks like you guys should definitely go and visit then 🙂

wow what a fabulous adventure! I would love to sail somewhere one day! I can’t believe I haven’t heard about Olu Deniz before ! Looks like a really nice beach! Your photos are amazing, I love the one of your jump especially ! So beautiful!

Picturesque coasts like those make it hard to leave the ship and explore. I could stare at that all day. But thankfully you pointed out numerous amazing things to do. I would thoroughly enjoy the paragliding. There is something about going through clouds that gives you an incredible feeling.

Turkey has always been one of the best countries I have visited until now, and can visit it many more times :), your pictures are just so amazing which makes me pack my bag and go to Turkey right away 🙂

Those are some amazing towns – Kas specially. It reminds me of a smaller town in Nepal called Bandipur with its cobbled pathways and bougainvillea. The water here is terrific, I definitely think that it is the best way to explore this coastline. Glad you shared your views on the same.

P.S: I love the pics

Really? I should definitely look into visiting there too!! 🙂 And thanks for your kind words about my photos!

This place is unbelievably beautiful. I’d book a trip here tomorrow if I could. The water looks so refreshing. I love beaches, I could stay here forever and not get bored for sure. The food looks really delicious as well. Definitely adding to my bucket list.

Eek, I’d also book a return trip back here tomorrow if I could! Thanks for your kind comment 🙂

The Turkish coastline seems so ethereal. The views, especially the sunset ones, are really breathtaking. I am sure it was a blissful experience cruising along on the turquoise coast of Turkey. The Olu Deniz beach looks gorgeous and the paragliding looks really exciting.

Hi Sandy! Yes, truly breathtaking! Thanks for your kind words!

Wow this sailing trip around turkey coast was stunningly beautiful. And added bonus the paragliding adventure love to do the sailing trip one day- another list added ti my bucket.

Awesome, glad to hear this post has inspired you! It is a truly beautiful coastline!

This is a really nice post. Thanks for sharing.

Great photos it makes me want to pack up and go now!!! I get sea sick so always worried about being on a boat on the ocean. Was it always calm?

First impressions of the 2022 sailing. We're all set to welcome our guests.

Despite a cool and wet winter, we were nevertheless able to finish the scheduled upgrades on time . During a couple beautiful days this week, we raised our sails for the first time in 2022. It gave us the opportunity to put the sails, our shiny new dinghy, the quieter generator, and enhancements such as the dishwashing machine to the test.

While doing so, we were treated to breathtaking scenery and culinary wizardry that revealed acclaimed Chef Caner to be in excellent shape. I'm going to share some impressions in this blog to whet your appetite for the upcoming season.

Sailing Chef Gulet Upgrades and introducing our new Captain

Our twelve-guest Sailing Chef Gulet is in the best shape of its life as the season begins. The environmental upgrades, which include new cold and hot water tanks, high-capacity solar panels, and a silent generator, will benefit our guests immensely. In addition to the existing air conditioning, fans have been installed in the cabins for maximum comfort. A dishwasher guarantees that water use is minimized while also allowing our staff to devote more time with the guests.

Most importantly, we're welcoming Mujdat, our new Captain, and Alperen, a crew member. Mujdat came to the Sailing Chef team with a rich experience and a deep understanding of the region. He has sailed with international guests for over two decades and speaks great English. Alperen, a fresh deckhand with previous experience, joins the crew. We are thrilled to welcome them both to Sailing Chef, and I'm looking forward to introducing them to our guests this season.

A brand new dinghy with high power Honda engine

As shared above, we acquired a brand new dinghy with a 40HP Honda engine. The new boat creates more comfort carrying or guests to and from destinations ashore. It also creates even more water fun opportunities for children of all ages as it has the horsepower to pull at high speeds. The new crane system is now electric instead of the hand operated system that conveniently kept our crew in shape.

Great progress on the new Gulet “Sailing Chef II”

Upgrades to the recently added Sailing Chef II Gulet are on schedule. We informed you at the start of this year about our plans to expand our capacity by adding another Gulet. On this Gulet, too, we dedicated to considerable updates in order to meet the trusted Sailing Chef quality standards.

I'm happy to report that the renovations are coming along nicely, with the new bathrooms, for example, nearing completion. They are simply stunning as you can see in the pictures.

The Gulet is currently docked at the Kairos Marina . The goal is to return to the sea by the third week of April, in time to welcome the first guests aboard the Sailing Chef II Gulet in May.We've begun accepting new reservations for the seasons 2022 and 2023.

The Sailing Chef II Gulet, which can accommodate ten guests, is now available for gulet charter. On the Gulet, there are five double cabins. There are double beds in three of the rooms and two single beds in the others. In May and October, the cost of a carefree all-inclusive week starts at €7.900. June and September are €8.800, while July and August are €9.600.

Be a part of the 2022 season. Follow us on instagram.

Overall, it's been a busy winter with excellent outcomes for our visitors.

Furthermore, with the restoration of ferry services between Greece and Turkey , the options expand even further. You can prolong your vacation by flying to Rhodes or Kos , which are both a ferry ride away from the Datca peninsula, where your Sailing Chef Blue Voyage departs and arrives.

We're really looking forward to the new season and can't wait to welcome our first guests next week.

Please follow us on Instagram if you'd like to see impressions throughout the season.

Welcome to the season of 2022. Welcome aboard!

Your Sailing Chef Team

p.s. Stay tuned for the announcement of our new partner hotel for 2022. We expect to reach an agreement for the benefit of our guests in the next week.

50 Shades of Turquoise – Boutique Sailing on Turkey’s Turquoise Coast

Turkey’s Turquoise Coast is made for exploring by boat with its raggedy limestone coast that plunges into the sea, scalloped with small bays, many of which are inaccessible by road. My first experience on board a traditional wooden Turkish sailing boat known as a gulet – backpacker-style, aged 19 – had marked the beginning of a lifelong love affair with sailing (one that has since seen me sail around the Med on various vessels including tall ship and ancient ships ).

But the memories of gulet sailing in Turkey stayed with me for their incomparable combination of turquoise seas, incredible food, and sense and being close to nature. I think this is because gulet trips tend to be slow and leisurely coastal cruises with plenty of swimming, and nights that are warm enough to sleep on deck and watch the stars.

Somehow, 15 years have passed since that first gulet trip. With many more sea miles under my belt, would I still love it (and Turkey) as much on my long-overdue return?

Let’s face it, revisiting beloved destinations is always a risk. But the Turquoise Coast was calling my name.

Gulet cruises in Turkey are ridiculously good value. That was true in 2004 and is still true today. The trips aimed at backpackers are the cheapest way to experience life at sea in the Mediterranean – if you want more information on these then check out my previous post ‘ Gulet Sailing for Backpackers ‘.

This time around though, I wanted to treat myself to something a little bit more luxurious.

SAILING WITH SCIC

Turkish evil eye charm

I tend to go on sailing trips where you get stuck in crewing, but last year I had various aches and pains at the time (getting old!) and fancied a proper vacation rather than a hands-on sail. I’d come across SCIC Sailing – a Dutch/English company with a small fleet of boats – on the travel blog Hey! Dip Your Toes In and was instantly smitten by the words ‘champagne and goat’s cheese’ in their brochure. SCIC is by no means the only company in this region of Turkey offering this type of gulet trip, but the little touches in their brochure stood out.

And their price was very competitive. Because the other big draw for me was the lack of single supplement – catnip to a solo traveller. As with hotels, cabin charters are often priced on the assumption they will be filled by a couple. This makes SCIC’s prices very appealing for a solo sailor – particularly when you factor in the inclusive food and drink. Unsurprisingly up to 50% of their passengers are solo travellers which ensures a sociable vibe.

(note: this was not a sponsored trip, I paid my own way)

SCIC calls itself a boutique sailing company. It’s not ultra-luxury, for that look at superyachts, but if you’re used to backpacking then it certainly feels luxurious. You could describe their aim as ‘ultra-relaxation’.

So what does paying extra for a nearly-luxury sailing trip get you, compared to the budget version?

  • A certain level of comfort and service. The boat was roomy with lots of padded seats and spaces suitable for ultra-relaxation. The sails are not just for decoration, they are put to use – whenever the wind is actually blowing. And there is AC, although you can only use it when the generator is on (not unusual for boats) and don’t expect it to be refrigerator-cold.
  • Food. It gets you a lot of food. Life on board feels like a continual banquet of delicious Turkish mezze. The food is insanely good, better than anything I had ashore, and mealtimes are a highlight. See also: cold beers/chilled rosé wine to hand at any time.
  • A different clientele. Whilst the backpacker cruises are teeming with tanned Aussies in their early 20s, on this boat I was the youngest by a few decades. There were only 7 of us, including one couple and several returnees. I’m sure there was just as much alcohol consumed on board as on the backpacker cruises – though maybe we were in bed a little earlier.

WHAT’S THE BOAT LIKE?

Wheel and aft seating area on the gulet

I sailed on Notus, a 24m long 6m wide traditional wooden Turkish boat. Cabins are ensuite with a double bed and a flushing toilet (I tell you, this is a true luxury after you’ve sailed on a replica ancient Phoenician ship with no toilet…). It even has a window that looked straight out onto the sea, which always seems to be a startling shade of turquoise. There was a crew of 3 including the cook, who somehow churns out endless meals from his galley. The anchor is dropped for mealtimes which are taken at the back (aft) of the boat. Comfy padded seating areas are found at both the front and back of the boat, as well as mattresses for sunbathing.

A note about air-conditioning: there is AC on the boat but it only runs when the generator is on. You can’t have it on all night. This is typical on sailboats.

DAILY ROUTINE

Sunrise near Oludeniz

At the start of the voyage, a rough itinerary is decided by the passengers and skipper. Our group was all in favour of sailing and swimming rather than seeing the sights ashore. I’ve been to this part of Turkey (I sailed on the Göcek-Göcek route) a few times so that was fine by me.

Our daily routine looked a bit like this: wake up and jump into the sea. Breakfast. Refreshing post-breakfast swim. Sail to another bay. Sunbathe. Jump in the water to cool off. Eat lunch. Swimming. Try not to sink from the volume of food you’ve just consumed. More sailing. Afternoon tea (yes). Swim. Take the paddleboard or kayak out if you’re feeling energetic, or swim to a cave. Drinks and nibbles. Maybe another swim before dinner. Try to find some room for dinner. Food coma. Perhaps a skinny dip once it’s dark if you’re feeling perky. Roll down to bed.

My highlight was the sunset stop one evening at Gemiler Island near Ölüdeniz, a tiny uninhabited island with impressive ruins, where we raced up to the top to watch the sun go down (with some cold beers of course).

Turquoise bay and ruins on Gemiler Island

And the time I saw a shoal of seven squid, ethereal and purple, whilst snorkelling.

And swimming each morning in a different bay of endless emeralds and teal.

I have to say that this ultra-relaxing style of trip was maybe a little too relaxing for me, and I didn’t think such a thing was even possible. By the end of the week, I was longing to stretch my legs and do some exploring (how did I even manage a year at sea? it’s a mystery to me now). However, if you are stressed and in need of hardcore relaxation then I can imagine this is just the ticket.

FINAL THOUGHTS

gulet sail hoisted

So what do I think of gulet sailing, 15 years on?

It’s still exceptional value, particularly since the Turkish Lira hit a rocky patch in 2018. It’s significantly cheaper than what you would pay for a similar trip over the water in Greece, and you get much more space (and food) to boot.

There’s a lot to recommend about exploring the Turkish coast by gulet sailing. One thing that I wasn’t so keen on was the amount of waste generated by the very generous – but bordering on slightly ridiculous – amount of food. It struck a strange note in these waste-conscious times.

It was also a little on the formal side for me. I’m used to crewing on boats so it felt a bit odd to be waited on and to dine separately from the crew. But this might not be a problem for your travel style.

The coastline is still just as spectacular, although it certainly feels busier – with lots of swanky Russian megayachts prowling the coast, as well as hundreds of other gulets. Don’t expect to have many bays completely to yourself, at least around Fethiye. If this is important to you then route options should be discussed before booking. Same goes if you’d rather focus on actual sailing.

But I reckon the best way to do this is to bring enough friends or family to fill the boat and charter the whole thing privately. That way you can tailor the activity levels, food, and formality to your liking – and it makes it easier to adapt to changing needs (and whims!).

What an excellent way to spend a week though.

TURKEY GULET YACHT

A gulet is a classic wooden, motorized, and sailing boat that is perfect for long sea voyages and close-to-land cruises.

Traditional Turkish gulets are made-to-order boats that skilled artisans construct from wood. Because they provide a very comfortable cruising experience, gulets, often referred to as motor sailboats, are perfect for coastal excursions and lengthy sea cruises.

We are aware that the first gulet construction began in Turkey’s Bodrum region. However, production is also taking place in Bozburun, Marmaris, Fethiye, and Istanbul as a result of the expanding market and demand.

Types of Gulets

Gulet: The gulet is the most well-known traditional yacht design for Blue Cruise. The dining table and seating area are located at the back of the gulets.

There is typically a sofa and enough sun pillows out front for everyone. The entrance to the cabins is through this hall, which features a dining table according to the size of the gulet and an interior hall.

The yacht’s round stern causes the guest quarters to be in the front, while the aft side is typically used as the technical area. The ability to sail is marginally superior to that of Aynakic gulets.

The AFT parts of Aynakic gulets are not round, as they are in gulets, but rather are in a structure with raised corners, which is a key characteristic that sets them apart from ordinary gulets.

They typically use this space for the suite room, or what we would refer to as the “master cabin.” All other details are the same as for gulets, with the exception of this characteristic.

Tirhandil is the oldest local wooden boat type with a pointed stern and the best-suited wooden yacht for sailing. Today, the equipment has changed from sloop to lifeboat and from sail to sail; the majority of them are three-corner sails.

They do not construct them on particularly lengthy decks, often between 15 and 25 meters, like other kinds. The same standards apply to their cabins. If you like sailing, this is the best option.

Accommodation on Gulets

Traditional Turkish gulets have evolved in appearance over time. A modern gulet today resembles a high-end floating hotel and can be anywhere between 15 and 55 meters (50 and 180 feet) in length. Gulet length and passenger capacity are not inversely related.

A 20-meter gulet, for instance, might contain three guest cabins or six. The cabins must be smaller in order to accommodate additional cabins of the same size. But in general, taller gulets make up vessels with six or more multi-cabs.

Every cabin on gulets of different shapes and sizes was created with the needs of the passenger in mind, including a bed, wardrobe, separate shower, and toilet.

However, extra comfort amenities like sofa sets, dressers, work desks, and jacuzzis are also available, depending on the size of the rooms and the level of luxury of the boat. There are separate cabins for personnel in the guest cabins.

Gulet Passenger Safety

On gulets, the welfare of the passengers comes first. As a result, each gulet contains numerous fuel and clean water tanks. Additionally, it features a complete set of navigation and safety equipment, including life jackets, fire extinguishers, GSM phones, and VHF radios.

All of these safety precautions and modern technologies prevent any potential emergency and enhance your seaside vacation.

Types of Gulet Charters

Private yacht charter: When you charter a gulet, the entire vessel—along with its crew—is yours for the duration of the rental period. Within the parameters outlined in your rental agreement, you are free to take any route during the rental term.

And you are not restricted to any set timetable; you can plan your vacation however you like. You can purchase our ready-made menu packages and avoid sticking to a typically restricted menu, just as you can shop for your rations.

Renting a private gulet is the perfect choice if you want to spend a luxurious vacation at sea with your family or enjoy the sea and entertainment with close friends.

For a trip you won’t forget and wish to repeat, choose from traditional, classic, luxury, or ultra-luxury yacht charter options to suit your needs and experience.

Cabin rentals : On a shared tour, one or more cabins may be rented. The schedule for the route, lunch times, and meal components remain the same.

The purpose of in-cabin trips, which they typically arrange on classic gulets, is to experience the spirit and joy of the Blue Cruise rather than taking a vacation on a luxury yacht. Let’s say you can’t organize enough groups to rent a private gulet or you go over your budget.

Then, a cabin rental could provide you with a relaxing blue-tour vacation. Renting a cabin will help you make the most of your vacation by allowing you to cruise in style, widen your circle of friends, and meet new acquaintances on the boat.

How dining works on cruise ships in 2024.

A typical main course served on the cruise ship Norwegian Prima.

Embarking on a cruise is about much more than the destinations you’ll visit. Among the many onboard attractions, dining is a major part of any cruise vacation.

If you’ve never cruised, you could be forgiven for thinking that you’ll be forced to dress in formal wear and eat with strangers day after day. In fact, such an insistence on formal wear and shared tables is one of the biggest misconceptions about cruising in the modern day.

Modern cruise ships are floating vacation resorts, with multiple dining options to enjoy. Formal dinners do still exist, but so do poolside burgers, lavish salad bars, and midnight room service.

From the elegance of main dining rooms to the convenience of room service, here's a closer look at five main dining concepts you'll encounter on most cruise ships.

1. Main Dining Rooms

The heart of the culinary experience on most cruises remains the main dining room. These elegantly designed spaces focus on traditional dinner service, but are often open for breakfast and lunch too. Aside from the main theater or performance space, the main dining rooms will likely be the biggest single spaces on the ship.

Although main dining menus vary wildly across lines, there typically will be a selection of dishes for between three and five courses.

On many lines, the menu changes daily, with an ‘always available’ section of popular dishes remaining in place for the duration of the cruise. If you're not hungry, remember that you're not required to order something for every course.

Traditionally, guests are given a fixed table and time for dinner, usually one of two sittings. Subject to availability, these can be changed by speaking with the host early in the cruise. This fixed option remains popular with traditional cruisers, as it allows guests to build a rapport with their servers and make new friends.

Large dining rooms remain a stunning feature on modern cruise ships from Royal Caribbean.

Some people dislike the fixed time concept, but there is no requirement to attend the main dining room every night, or even at all. All but the smallest cruise ships offer alternate dining options.

In recent years, cruise lines have begun to introduce more flexibility into the main dining room. Norwegian Cruise Line is well-known for its freestyle approach to dining, where guests come to the main dining room whenever they are ready to eat.

The downsides of anytime dining are the occasional need to wait, and the fact you’ll get different serving staff each night.

This more flexible approach that has proved so popular that many competing lines have introduced it or a hybrid approach. For example, British line P&O Cruises now offers the option of a fixed table for the duration of the cruise or an anytime option.

The shift to anytime dining is not the only trend seen in main dining rooms. In recent years, the majority of cruise lines have significantly relaxed dress codes.

Although sportswear and shorts may still be frowned upon during evenings, a ‘smart casual’ approach is perfectly acceptable on most lines. Even designated formal nights are, in most cases, less strict than in previous years.

2. Buffet Restaurants

For a more laid-back and versatile dining option, buffet restaurants on cruise ships offer a range of choices to suit everyone's taste.

Buffet restaurants on a cruise ship offer a wide variety of food options throughout the day.

Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, these restaurants provide a casual atmosphere where guests can help themselves to a wide range of dishes, from international cuisines to comfort foods.

Many buffet restaurants open for afternoon tea (or simply remain open for a longer lunch) and a late night snack bar ideal for those who’ve spent the day enjoying the sunshine and the bars.

The buffet is ideal for families and those looking for a quick and convenient meal without the formality of the main dining room. Usually, the buffet will be popular on formal night among those guests choosing not to dress up.

3. Alternative Casual Dining

Recognizing the desire for variety, most cruise ships offer alternative casual dining options, often situated poolside for easy access and quick service. These venues often operate on a 'grab and go' basis and are included in the cruise fare.

Casual venues can range from grill stations serving up burgers and hot dogs to pizzerias and sandwich bars, offering a relaxed dining experience without the need to get changed. This option is perfect for those looking to grab a bite in between activities or seeking a lighter lunch or casual meal under the sun.

On larger ships, some alternative approaches to casual dining are appearing. Norwegian Cruise Line’s Prima class of ships has introduced a food hall concept with ordering via table-based tablets.

On some lines, specialty cafes and coffee shops offer pastries and cakes, but these often come at an extra charge.

4. Specialty Restaurants

For those looking to elevate their dining experience, specialty restaurants on cruise ships offer cuisine-specific menus with a focus on fine dining. These restaurants often require an additional charge, either a flat fee or à la carte pricing, and provide an intimate setting with enhanced service and premium menu options.

Offering everything from steakhouses and Italian trattorias to sushi bars and French bistros, specialty restaurants provide a culinary exploration and an intimate alternative to the larger dining venues, at an additional cost.

A beach club serving North and Central American inspired cuisine is one of the premium dining ... [+] options on P&O Arvia cruise ship.

Some of the world’s biggest cruise ships can contain multiple specialty restaurants. For example, MSC World Europa features 13 dining venues, of which six carry an additional charge.

5. Room Service

The convenience of room service allows guests to enjoy meals in the privacy of their cabin at any time of the day or night. While the menu is more limited compared to other dining options, room service is perfect for those who prefer a quiet meal alone or with their travel companions.

Whether room service is free depends on the line, with some lines offering just free delivery at breakfast. Late night deliveries often incur a charge.

Dealing With Dietary Restrictions

Cruise lines are increasingly accommodating guests with dietary restrictions, offering a range of options for those with specific dietary needs.

Whether you're vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or have food allergies, the dining venues on board can cater to your requirements. Many modern cruise ships' buffet restaurants now feature detailed allergen labels.

Even so, it’s best to inform the cruise line of any dietary restrictions in advance of your sailing. Most ships have dedicated staff and unadvertised options to ensure that every guest can enjoy their dining experience without compromise.

Behind the scenes: How this Carnival cruise ship galley serves thousands of meals a night

On any given night, Pacific Restaurant on Carnival Cruise Line’s newest ship is a hub of activity. On multiple evenings during a recent sailing, guests lined up at the entrance to one of the main dining rooms on Carnival Jubilee , which gave way to a two-deck space with ornate, twinkling light fixtures and soaring white columns.

But a windowless room several decks below is where the real action happens.

The ship’s main galley, lined with metallic counters, stoves and ceiling panels, cranks out 15,000 dishes per night on average. The kitchen – one of 18 galleys overall – supplies multiple meals, but dinner is its busiest time.

“It's not a small operation by any means, especially on this class of ship,” Vivek Menon, the ship’s Food and Beverage Director told USA TODAY on board. Here’s how they do it.

Ever wanted to ride an airport bag belt? You can't, but we can show you where they go.

Behind the scenes with Disney's baby elephant: 'We don't force our animals to do anything'

How does a cruise ship galley work?

Lots of planning happens before meals ever hit guests’ plates. Food orders are placed around two weeks in advance and loaded onto the vessel on turnaround days, said Menon, whose food and beverage team includes just under 900 members (Jubilee can accommodate more than 6,000 guests).

The ship's galley staff cooks roughly 5,000 pounds of whole chicken, grills around 5,000 pounds of strip steak and bakes approximately 600 loaves of bread every week.

One morning in late February, fish was thawing in a walk-in refrigerator the size of a small bedroom on deck 3, two decks below the galley. According to a label on its exterior, a nearby freezer housed ice cream, while another room was filled with boxes of cruise essentials like Grey Goose Vodka and Crown Royal whiskey.

Chefs then place orders with the vessel’s storeroom team two days before they need the ingredients. “Pre-prep” – such as trimming and marinating chicken breasts – takes place a day beforehand, with more prep following on the day of service, though the time required varies.

Those chicken breasts, for example, might be prepped an hour prior to service. By contrast, “Prime rib cooks for six hours,” Menon said. “A short rib braises for 12 hours, so obviously that has a huge lead time. So, it depends on the dish.”

Then it’s showtime. The galley provides food for an average of 4,000 people a night between Pacific Restaurant and the ship’s other dining room, Atlantic Restaurant.

Orders start trickling in at around 5:45 p.m., but the crew is ready. Chefs are given a head count at the beginning of the evening, at peak time and near the end of dinner.

For example, Menon said, “If we’re cooking 1,000 fish for early dining, 1,000 filets, the counts are spread out in such a way that in the first 15 minutes, the cook is running around 200 ahead of count, because these counts are very quickly going to catch up,” Menon said.

As orders slow down, they narrow the gap and reduce output accordingly. “At the end of dinner service, you have very little left,” Menon said. “By the time it's nine 9, 9:15, we’re already down one or two, four or five pieces, depending on the volume we're setting up.” Guest flow differs each evening, however.

At the beginning of a cruise, the crew starts logging how much of a given item is used on that sailing – down to details like how guests want their steak cooked – which allows them to prepare more or less as needed.

Does food go to waste?

Tracking guest preferences is about more than just providing good service. The line has paid close attention to what goes uneaten as part of efforts to reduce food waste. “We looked at what the guests don't like, what's coming back on the plate,” Menon said. Then they can make changes.

Carnival also introduced QR-code menus in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has made it easier to tweak menus (though they have printed ones as well). Other measures, such as adding a charge for once-included room service in 2022, have helped the line move closer to those aims, too.

“Before (when) you walked down a corridor, every second cabin, you're going to see a plate outside with some things half-eaten because it was complimentary,” Menon said.

The line generated nearly 2.5 pounds of food waste per person around five years ago. Now that number is about 1.5 pounds. (Read more about how cruise lines have been working to reduce food waste here .)

What is Carnival’s Chef’s Table?

If guests want to peek behind the culinary curtain, they can see the galley for themselves. Carnival’s Chef’s Table experience features a tour and a multi-course dinner for between 12 and 16 people, according to the line’s website .

The sleek dining room that hosts the dinner on Jubilee was tucked deep inside the galley space, giving passengers up-close views of the kitchen. The menus – which can’t be found elsewhere on board – vary from ship to ship but have included items like knotted parmesan herb brioche, black-garlic cannelloni, a “lamb trilogy” (roasted, broiled and confit) and more.

When is the best time to take a cruise? We broke it down by region.

The experience is available on all Carnival ships and ranges from $90-$150 per person, depending on the vessel and the menu. Passengers can make reservations online after booking their cruise.

The long-awaited arrival of the MICHELIN Guide marks a recognition of the rapid development in gastronomic culture in Russia over the past 30 years. The unique history and traditions of the region, formed by the variety of high-quality local products from the Far East, the Altai Republic, the Black Sea and the north-west of Russia, inspire talented chefs to create exquisite culinary masterpieces that cannot be found anywhere else. The first ever Moscow MICHELIN Star ceremony took place tonight, at the Zaryadye Concert Hall, in the heart of the Russian capital. The festive evening, organized with all necessary security measures, was attended by more than 500 guests. “ The MICHELIN Guide and Moscow are sharing a historical moment with the unveiling of the MICHELIN Guide Moscow 2022 selection . Inspectors have been particularly seduced by the high-quality local produce. Russia is a wonderfully wide-ranging expression of nature: from sea coasts to wild forests, from aromatic herbs to first-class seafood… There are lots of discoveries to make ” says Gwendal Poullennec, MICHELIN Guide International Director. “ Moreover, thanks to cultural exchanges throughout history between Russia and Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East, gourmets will experience unforgettable authentic meals full of flavor .”

Restaurants were celebrated through the announcement of the MICHELIN Guide selection, with the reveal of Bib Gourmand (for restaurants offering particularly interesting value for money, where you can enjoy a delicious meal under RUB2000), MICHELIN Stars (for restaurants serving high-quality cuisine), and MICHELIN Green Stars (for restaurants that are pioneering in their sustainable approach). As for all its other selections, the MICHELIN Guide has used the same historical methodology. The team of independent and anonymous inspectors from the Guide has been in the field for its traditional table-tests, during which they evaluate the meal they experience via 5 assessment criteria  :

- The quality of the produce used - The mastery of cooking techniques - The mastery of flavors - The chef’s personality in his/her cuisine - The consistency between visits Thanks to the seriousness and depth of their methodology, inspectors were able to collectively build this first MICHELIN Guide Moscow selection.
