ECLIPSE Yacht – Epic $600M Superyacht

The ECLIPSE yacht was once the largest yacht in the world at an impressive length of 162.5 metres (533 ft) but currently ranks in second place after AZZAM.

Though she is known as the billion-dollar yacht, it is estimated that her true value lies between US $500 – $700 million.

The vessel can host 36 guests and is even rumored to feature a state-of-the-art anti-paparazzi system to protect the privacy of those on board.

ECLIPSE yacht interior

The interior (and the exterior) was designed by Terence Disdale , who has become one of the top names in the industry despite having no formal design education.

ECLIPSE was his largest project to date, and he also worked on prominent vessels such as A+ and AL SALAMAH. The interior of ECLIPSE is classically designed in a style that is to be expected from one of the largest yachts in the world.

The upholstery and furniture follow a beige and crème color palette with wooden accents.

The yacht’s 18 cabins can welcome 36 guests as well as 70 crew members, which is an unusually large number even for a vessel of this size.

A large dance floor, several fireplaces, two swimming pools, and two helipads are also included onboard.

The ECLIPSE yacht interior is so large that there is even a cinema dedicated exclusively to crew members. In 2015 the interior of ECLIPSE was refitted by Blohm and Voss in Hamburg.

Specifications

The ECLIPSE yacht is the second-largest yacht in the world with a length of 162.5 meters (533 ft), a beam of 22 meters (72.2 ft), and a draft of 5.9 meters (19.4 ft).

She was built by the German shipyard Blohm & Voss and delivered to her owner in 2010.

Four MTU engines power ECLIPSE and allow her to reach top speeds of 25 knots, although her average cruising speed lies at 22 knots.

Her total volume lies at 13564 tons making her not only one of the longest but also the heaviest yachts in the world.

Like the interior of ECLIPSE, the interior was designed by Terence Disdale. According to rumors, Abramovich fitted her with an anti-paparazzi system that detects electronic light sensors from digital cameras.

However, there is no proof of this, although many newspapers report its existence.

On deck are several swimming pools and jacuzzis, and the aft of the vessel features a sizeable beach club. The yacht has a sleek design that attests to Terence Disdale’s classical style.

Eclipse tender FV

ECLIPSE came to fame as being the most expensive yacht ever built at the time for an approximate price of US $500 million.

She has seen further improvements since her purchase by Abramovich in 2010 and it is often widely reported that she is worth US $1.2 – $1.5 billion.

Managed by Blue Ocean Yacht Management, Eclipse features a diesel-electric propulsion system with generators powering rotating Azipod drives, dramatic exterior styling and a stunning interior design by London-based Terence Disdale Design, which has been responsible for all aspects of aesthetic design and layout, including the superstructure design, deck layouts, interior design and construction supervision.

Eclipse was voted Motor Yacht of the Year at the World Superyacht Awards in 2011.

Roman Abramovich's superyacht, Solaris

Superyachts tracked: Abramovich’s boat heads east after sanctions

Solaris is tracked off coast of Sicily, joining hurried sailings of Russian yachts to avoid seizure

  • Ukraine-Russia war – latest updates
  • The oligarchs and business figures on western sanction lists

Roman Abramovich’s superyacht Solaris was heading east across the Mediterranean on Thursday after sanctions were extended to the Chelsea FC owner.

His $600m vessel, tracked off the coast of Sicily on Thursday, appeared to have joined the hurried sailings of Russian oligarchs moving their superyachts across the world to avoid seizure by governments enforcing sanctions in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine .

The Solaris left the Barcelona port where it had been undergoing repairs on Tuesday, according to Reuters, and by Thursday afternoon it was rounding the southern coast of Sicily. Abramovich’s other yacht, the even more luxurious Eclipse – estimated to be worth more than $1bn after extensive renovations – set sail east from the Caribbean island of St Maarten towards international waters shortly after other oligarchs’ yachts were seized.

The Eclipse had crossed much of the Atlantic by midday Thursday when it was located to the west of the Canary Islands according to vesselfinder.com.

Abramovich was sanctioned by the US in 2018 but joined the UK list on Thursday morning. A spokesperson for Abramovich said earlier this week: “We never comment on the movements of the yacht or any other vehicles or vessels.”

The 163-metre Eclipse, which includes nine decks, two helipads and a 16-metre swimming pool that can be converted into a dancefloor, is the most expensive vessel owned by individuals on the growing US, EU and UK sanction lists.

Many super-rich Russians – including some not yet on the sanctions list, but with links to the Russian president, Vladimir Putin – appear to be attempting to move their superyachts to countries without formal extradition agreements with western governments.

French and Italian authorities last week seized three yachts worth more than $225m (£170m).

Tracking data from the shipping intelligence service MarineTraffic shows that Titan, a $100m superyacht owned by Alexander Abramov, a billionaire iron and steel magnate, arrived in Maldives waters last week after sailing from Fethiye in Turkey. Its owner, who holds a big stake alongside Abramovich in the London-listed coal and steel group Evraz, is not on any sanctions lists.

Clio, a $65m superyacht owned by the aluminium billionaire Oleg Deripaska, who has been subject to US sanctions since 2018, was reported last week to be heading for Raa Atoll in the Maldives. The Maldives is an Indian Ocean island nation with no extradition treaty with the US or the EU.

The US president, Joe Biden, said last week the US was actively working to seize the superyachts, luxury apartments and private jets of oligarchs linked to Putin. “We are coming for your ill-begotten gains,” he said in his State of the Union address .

The White House spokesperson, Jen Psaki, added: “We want [Putin] to feel the squeeze, we want the people around him to feel the squeeze.”

Three ways you can help the people of Ukraine from the UK

Support local charities

There are several Ukrainian charities working on the ground.  Sunflower of Peace  is a charity that helps paramedics and doctors, and has been fundraising for supplies, which includes first aid medical tactical backpacks.

United Help Ukraine  focuses on providing medical supplies and humanitarian aid, and raising awareness of the conflict.

Voices of Children  aims to help children affected by the war in eastern Ukraine, providing support through art therapy, psychologists, video storytelling and a number of other methods.

The  British Red Cross  has launched an emergency appeal to help Ukraine. The charity will be updating its webpage with news on the work its team is doing, and how support will be used to help people.

Support local journalism

English-language news outlets based in the country, such as  Kyiv Independent  and the  New Voice of Ukraine , are covering developments on the ground as the conflict unfolds, using local journalists. The Kyiv Independent says it was created by journalists in order to defend editorial independence. This  site on Twitter  covers many local journalists in Ukraine.

Write to your local MP

This can be a way to lobby the British government to place further sanctions on the Russian government and its associates. You can get in touch with your local MP via email or post to their constituency address. Instructions on how to get in touch can be found on  parliament.uk.

Grant Shapps, the UK transport secretary, said the government would detain any yachts suspected of being Russian-owned if they entered UK waters. “I want to make it impossible for individuals with links to Putin to use their aircraft in UK airspace, at UK airports or airfields, and any aircraft suspected of being linked to Russia will be detained,” he said. “Likewise, their yachts. Any of these floating gin palaces with an identifiable Russian connection will be detained if it attempts to dock in a British port.”

France detained Amore Vero , a 280ft, $120m superyacht they said was owned by Igor Sechin, in the Mediterranean port of La Ciotat. Sechin, who is also facing sanctions, is the chief executive of the Russian oil producer Rosneft and a close ally of Putin. Amore Vero, which means “true love” in Italian, can accommodate 14 guests and 28 crew.

French police, who boarded the vessel at night last week, said the ship was in port for repairs, but its crew were “making arrangements to leave in a hurry, without having completed the planned work”.

Italy’s Guardia di Finanza boarded and impounded Lena , a 41-metre, $45m yacht owned by Gennady Timchenko, a close friend of Putin who has an estimated $21bn fortune held in several large Russian raw materials companies, in Sanremo. Lady M, a 64-metre, $60m yacht owned by Alexei Mordashov, was seized in the nearby Ligurian port of Imperia.

Dilbar , the world’s largest superyacht by gross tonnage, which the US government said is owned by Alisher Usmanov , was reported to have been seized in Hamburg. However, German authorities later clarified that the 156-metre vessel, which has been valued at $600m, has not been impounded but requires an export waiver to leave the port.

Usmanov, who reportedly owns Witanhurst, the second biggest private home in the UK after Buckingham Palace, was added to the EU’s sanction list on Wednesday. The US imposed sanctions on him last week after the White House described him as a “one of Russia’s wealthiest individuals and a close ally of Putin”.

The yachts identified by the Guardian as linked to oligarchs are worth more than $3bn. The ultimate ownership of superyachts can be difficult to confirm as many are owned through shell companies registered in tax havens.

The huge steel displacement superyacht ECLIPSE measures around 170 metres, making her the world’s largest (or longest) private mega yacht in the world. M/Y ECLIPSE was designed by Hermidas Atabeyki with interior designs by the very well know yacht designer Terrence Disdale. She was built by the Thyssenkrupp Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg, which is a large industrial giant in Germany. The mega yacht has a gross tonnage of around 13,000 tonnes and superyacht Eclipse is slightly larger (around 36 ft longer) than the world’s previous longest private luxury yacht Dubai at 162 m, as owned by Sheikh Mohammed of Dubai.

Summary of Motor Yacht Eclipse and her custom features:

Yacht Eclipse is able to accommodate her guests in 11 staterooms and suites with 6,000 sq ft of living space and 600 doors. The premiere luxury yacht features incredible technology including heli facilities (with two helicopter pads), two swimming pools, several hot tubs, a disco hall, three launch boats and a mini-submarine capable of submerging up to 165ft. The Blohm & Voss built mega yacht reportedly has intruder detection alarms installed as well as an advanced missile defence system.

Yacht ECLIPSE was built by the experienced yacht owner Roman Abramovich who has commissioned several motor yachts including Le Grand Bleu, Pelorus, Sussurro and Ecstasea and now Eclipse. Perhaps the most complex private yacht ever built, yacht Eclipse had a preliminary launch back in late 2009 and her finishing and testing currently underway by Blohm & Voss in Germany and Norway. - Photo image by ship and yacht photographer Klaus Kehrls

The yacht is also possibly equipped with an ‘anti-paparazzi shield’, as activated by camera flashlights, which prevents some photography when operating by using lasers aimed directly at the offending cameras to overexpose unwanted photographs. In addition some of the windows on megayacht ECLIPSE have bullet proof glass and other areas are armour-plated for ultimate security against increasing worldwide piracy attempts.

Yacht ECLIPSE was built by the yacht owner Mr. Roman Abramovich and had her preliminary launch back in late 2009 with finishing and testing still being carried out in Germany and Norway. Roman Abramovich the experienced owner has commissioned several motor yachts including Le Grand Bleu, Pelorus, Sussurro and Ecstasea and now Eclipse.

yacht the eclipse

Lewis Whyld/Associated Press

When I tell people about our package on American oligarchy at Mother Jones , everyone wants to know about the yachts .

As I wrote in an essay for the magazine, these gleaming vessels have come to symbolize both the decadence and detachment of Russia’s ultra-wealthy and our own. And they are full of some absolutely ridiculous shit: submarines and helicopter hangars, sculptures of spouses preening off the bow, climbing walls, anti-paparazzi lasers, drone-detection systems, gold-leaf ceilings, IMAX theaters. The former owner of Tottenham Hotspur installed a padel court on the yacht where he used to conduct his business deals. (Are you familiar with padel? It’s sort of like pickleball for people who do insider trading .)

But there’s one yacht that I’ve come to think of as sort of the yacht of yachts. The Christina O is not the biggest superyacht in the world; at 325 feet, it is a full 265 feet shorter than the royal family of Abu Dhabi’s pleasure craft, Azzam . But the Christina O is unsurpassed in both its rich-guy history and rich-guy taste. It was built for Aristotle Onassis in the 1950s, played host to Jackie Kennedy, and served as Grace Kelly’s wedding venue when she married the Prince of Monaco. It also had a swimming pool that turned into a dance floor and bar stools made out of whale foreskins, so that Onassis could tell women that they were “sitting on the largest penis in the world.” The dance floor became a recurring feature in the industry; the seats, as far as I know, did not.

Post by @motherjonesmag View on Threads

It wasn’t just its life under Onassis, though, that gives the Christina O its mystique. The ship has has had an illustrious afterlife as a for-charter vessel, at the low price of $800,000-a-week . It was a filming location for The Crown , and for an Angelina Jolie movie about Maria Callas (one of Onassis’ lovers), and for the 2022 Academy-Award-nominee, Triangle of Sadness , which is about a group of wealthy tourists who end up submerged in sewage and attacked by pirates after arguing about capitalism. Heidi Klum got married on it. And in the summer of 2023, a year after finalizing his divorce with his fourth-wife Jerry Hall, it’s where Rupert Murdoch retreated for a Mediterranean cruise with two of his daughters; his third ex-wife Wendy Deng; and one of Deng’s good friends—a molecular biologist named Elena Zhukova.

As they soaked in the sun in Naples and Corfu, the Daily Mail reported that Murdoch and Zhukova were more than friends. “He’s got the energy of people half his age,” a source helpfully told Matt Drudge. “He just might be in love again.” On Friday the New York Times confirmed that the 92-going-on-46-year-old Murdoch and 66-year-old Zhukova are officially engaged. There’s just something about that ship!

Murdoch, you know by now—he is the conservative media mogul “who has done more damage to the United States,” former Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull told Sean Kelly in Mother Jones earlier this year, than any other person alive. But Zhukova is an equally compelling figure in oligarch circles.

Born in the USSR, she emigrated to the US to work at Baylor College of Medicine and ended up researching diabetes at UCLA. She was married for a while to a Russian billionaire investor , Alexander Zhukov, and they had a daughter, Dasha Zhukova, but Alexander and Elena had divorced before Alexander made most of his money. Then in 2008, Dasha Zhukova also married a Russian billionaire investor—Roman Abramovich, an oligarch who made his first fortune when he scooped up a state-owned oil company at cents on the dollar and eventually built the world’s third-largest yacht, Eclipse . The couple got big into art collecting and curation, and even started a contemporary art museum in St. Petersburg. The younger Zhukova also struck up a friendship with Murdoch’s third-wife (at the time), and when Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced he was making Abramovich an “honorary citizen” of New York City in 2013, Deng was in attendance .

Murdoch divorced Deng and married Jerry Hall, and then Murdoch and Hall divorced too. Roman and Dasha divorced in 2018, and Dasha Zhukova ended up remarrying a year later to the Greek billionaire Stavros Niarchos III—who was, to bring this full circle, the grandson of Stravros Niarchos I, a famous yacht owner, and the person Onassis was trying to one-up when he decided to build a sprawling luxury yacht stuffed with whale foreskins.

That’s a lot to sift through, but that’s sort of the point: Once you start reading about rich people and their yachts, you realize that you can never stop reading about rich people and their yachts. You are always , on some level, reading about rich people and their yachts, even if it seems like you are reading about art or politics or soccer . It’s like discovering some hidden fabric of the universe that binds and connects everyone with an offshore bank account and three or more wives.

This is Murdoch’s second engagement in the last year. Last March, less than a year after he divorced Hall, he announced impending nuptials with Ann Lesley Smith, a Los Angeles dental hygienist who met Murdoch either—accounts vary—at the same southern California vineyard where he is about to marry Zhukova or at his ranch in Montana, where, The Guardian reported , “the former dental hygienist was said to have offered to check his cavities.”

Smith, who had been married three times, referred to their union as a “ gift from God .” That engagement ended after two weeks.

Why ISS astronauts don't know where to look for the April 8 total solar eclipse

The cameras aboard the International Space Station may be ready, but it's still not clear where to point them in order to capture the April 8 total solar eclipse.

NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli captured this shot of the solar eclipse of Oct. 14, 2023 from the International Space Station.

NASA astronauts plan to watch the total eclipse from space on April 8, but there will be some complications.

The Expedition 71 crew, which will include SpaceX's Crew-8 slated to launch no earlier than Feb. 22, is finalizing its  solar eclipse  observing schedule. The goal is to catch the event from the  International Space Station  as it sweeps over the United States on April 8. However,  NASA  astronauts told Space.com on Jan. 25 that, while the cameras are ready and the astronauts are trained, timing can't be decided for a long time.

This is because the ISS' precise orbit isn't guaranteed. For instance, the station may need to dodge space debris, Crew-8 NASA astronaut Michael Barratt told Space.com. That'd inevitably adjust its trajectory. "Every once a while, we have to tweak the orbit of our station to avoid hitting stuff," Barratt said. "The closer we get [to April], the more we'll be able to sharpen our approach. We'll know what our viewing angle is going to be."

Crew-8 will spend roughly half a year on the International Space Station (ISS), and the upcoming total solar eclipse will occur during this stay. On board will be NASA astronauts Matthew Dominick (commander), Barratt (pilot) and Jeanette Epps (mission specialist), along with mission specialist Alexander Grebenki, of the Russian space agency Roscosmos.

Related: April 8 solar eclipse: What is the path of totality, and where's the best spot to watch?

Solar eclipses happen when the  moon  passes in front of the  sun  from  Earth 's perspective. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon is close enough in its orbit around our planet to cover the entire sun. The next total solar eclipse passes across much of the U.S. as well as some parts of Canada and Mexico. It'll take place on April 8.

This won't be Barratt's first time observing an eclipse while aloft. When the last total solar eclipse went across the U.S. in 2017, he was on board an Alaska Airlines charter flight observing it at 40,000 feet. "The shadow was just speeding, hurtling towards the mainland. It was really amazing to me," he recalled.

As the astronauts get ready to aim their cameras, they are enjoying the progressions in digital technology since the last 2017 total eclipse in the U.S., Barratt said in a press conference at NASA's Johnson Space Center held on Jan. 25.

"The big difference now is the camera complement (and) the imagery will be, I think, much more crisp and much, much more capable," Barratt said, adding, "we will stand ready on our very unique platform to capture it the best we can."

On the Roscosmos side of the ISS, Grebenkin said in a separate interview that discussions are also ongoing with the Russians regarding how to best approach the event.

— April 8 total solar eclipse: Why this eclipse repeats itself every 54 years

— What is a solar eclipse?

— April 8 solar eclipse: What will happen during totality?

"I didn't really train specifically for the observing," Grebenkin said, speaking in Russian through an English interpreter. "I do know that it's going to happen, and I am planning to do my best to take pictures and also observe the event itself."

If you're looking to observe the solar eclipse on Earth, we have you covered. Our guide on how to observe the sun safely guide tells you what you need to know to look at the sun. We also have a guide to  solar eclipse glasses , and how to safely photograph the sun if you'd like to get practicing before the big day.

What to Expect: A Solar Eclipse Guide

What to Expect When You're Expecting a Total Solar Eclipse

So You're Expecting an Eclipse?

Against a black background is a total solar eclipse. In the middle is a black circle – the Moon. Surrounding it are white streams of wispy light, streaming out into the sky.

Here’s a guide to help you prepare for the big day.

The total solar eclipse on Aug. 21, 2017, was photographed from Madras, Oregon. The black circle in the middle is the Moon. Surrounding it are white streams of light belonging to the Sun’s outer atmosphere, called the corona. Credits: NASA/Aubrey Gemignani

Before the Eclipse

First, find out where the eclipse will happen.

If you want to experience the one-of-a-kind phenomenon of a total solar eclipse, you will have to be located within a long but narrow path, usually less than 150 miles wide, called the path of totality.

On the same day, though, a partial solar eclipse will be visible across a much larger area (but not the entire globe). Consult an eclipse map, like this one, to find out where the eclipse will happen and what type of eclipse is visible in different locations.

A map of the contiguous U.S. shows the path of the 2024 total solar eclipse stretching on a narrow band from Texas to Maine.

Second, decide where you will go to watch the eclipse.

If you already live somewhere the eclipse can be seen, great! You don’t have to go anywhere. But if you don’t, you will need to make travel plans.

If you want to see a total eclipse, act fast! Hotels and campgrounds in the path of totality sell out quickly, as many people will travel from far and wide to see the spectacular celestial event of a total solar eclipse. You’ll want to find lodging as early as you can. Otherwise, you might end up paying more than you expect to, or you will have to get creative. Do you have friends or family who live in the path of totality who would be eager to have you visit during the eclipse?

Tents, cars, and telescopes on a field beneath a blue and pink sky.

Picking the Perfect Spot

Once you know what town or city you will be in, pick a specific location to watch the eclipse..

Perhaps you can watch from a park, a museum, a library, a school, or a college campus. Many places, especially those in the path of totality, will already be planning events that visitors can attend. Contact a town’s chamber of commerce, science museum, library, or local astronomy club to ask about any events open to the public on eclipse day. You can also find a list of NASA-affiliated events on NASA’s eclipse events webpage .

When deciding where you will go, also think about what the weather might be like at your desired location during the eclipse.

Is your destination likely to have clear skies on eclipse day? If it is cloudy, raining, or snowing, you probably won’t see the eclipse. The partially eclipsed Sun can barely be seen as a white crescent through clouds. Credits: Vanessa Thomas

Bonus tip: If you’re in or near the path of totality, pick an observing spot that is away from any streetlights that might automatically turn on when the sky gets dark.

You don’t want your experience of nature’s beauty ruined by artificial light!

The partially eclipsed Sun can barely be seen as a white crescent through clouds.

Third, plan how you will watch the eclipse safely.

It is never safe to look directly at a partially or uneclipsed Sun without proper eye protection. Only during the brief moments of totality during a total solar eclipse, when the Moon completely covers the Sun, can you look directly at a solar eclipse without eye protection.

To view a partial solar eclipse, or the partial phases of a total eclipse, you can use solar viewing glasses (often called “eclipse glasses”) or handheld solar viewers to place in front of your eyes. (Sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for viewing the Sun.) Safe solar viewers are thousands of times darker and ought to comply with the ISO 12312-2 international standard.

A group of people stand in a line. They're all looking up, wearing eclipse glasses.

Watch Safely

Against a landscape of a flat field and mountains, several people look toward the sky while wearing eclipse glasses. One woman looks through a telecope.

Find Glasses

You might be able to find glasses at a local library, museum, or school. (Beware of unverified sellers on the internet who try to capitalize on the eclipse and might claim their glasses are safe even though they are not.) Buy or find some glasses or handheld viewers early, before they sell out, and store them in a safe place. (NASA does not approve any particular brand of solar viewers.) A person looks through a telescope. There is a large solar filter blocking the front of the telescope.

Get a Closer Look

If you want to use a telescope, binoculars, or camera to view a partial eclipse, you must place a safe solar filter on the front of the device, protecting the optics from the Sun’s intense heat and light. Or you can use special solar telescopes or binoculars that are designed specifically for viewing the Sun, which have solar filters built into the instrument. Visit a vendor that specializes in astronomical equipment to purchase solar filters or other equipment dedicated to solar viewing. Someone looks through a telescope with a solar filter. An illustration shows the silhouette of a person looking into a rectangular box through a hole cut into the end of a box. The Sun appears behind the person. Sunlight streams into the box through a small hole punched into a piece of aluminum foil taped over the Sun-facing end of the box, to the person's left, projecting a crescent Sun onto a white sheet of paper taped to the inside of the box.

Use an Indirect Method

You can also use an indirect method to view the partial phases of the eclipse, such as a pinhole projector. This video shows you how to make a simple pinhole projector out of a cardboard box. You can also project sunlight through any small holes, such as holes punched in a piece of cardboard, those in a strainer or colander, the holes in a straw hat, or even the gaps between the fingers of your crossed hands. Using a cardboard box, paper, aluminum foil, scissors, and tape, you can create a box pinhole projector to show crescent images of the Sun during the eclipse’s partial phases. A car's speedometer, showing a full tank of gas.

Check Your Gas Tank

First, if you’re planning to drive anywhere today, make sure your car has plenty of gas (or charge, if it’s electric). Traffic can be heavy right after the eclipse, and you don’t want to get stranded if you are stuck in long backups. Gas stations can sometimes run out of gas if many travelers are driving to and from the same locations on the same day. Make sure your car’s tank is full if you plan to drive anywhere on eclipse day. Pack Some Snacks

Also, make sure you have enough food and water for the day. Restaurants and grocery stores, especially those in small towns, can get very busy or possibly run out of food when serving many more customers than they’re used to. It’s a good idea to have some food or snacks with you on eclipse day. Credits: Rachel Lense

Get Comfortable

Remember to gather your solar viewing glasses or other solar filters to watch the eclipse safely, as well as sunscreen, chairs, blankets, jackets, hats, phones, cameras, and anything else you need to be comfortable and to enjoy the eclipse. Finally, get to your eclipse-watching site early, before the partial eclipse starts. You don’t want to be late and miss the exciting moment when the Moon takes its first “bite” out of the Sun! Bring a blanket, chairs, drinks, snacks, sunscreen, eclipse glasses, and anything else you need to be comfortable while watching the eclipse. Credits: NASA

During the Eclipse

What You'll Experience

The Sun against a black background. The top right area appears to be scooped out where it is blocked by the Moon, like a crescent.

The Beginning

Once the eclipse starts, the Moon will spend an hour or so gradually covering more and more of the Sun. During the early stages of the eclipse, the Moon will block only a portion of the Sun’s disk. Credits: NASA/Bill Ingalls

Shadows of the eclipse are seen on a sidewalk. The are like bright thin crescents scattered across the sidewalk.

Look Around

During these partial phases of the eclipse, create or use a pinhole projector to see images of the crescent Sun. If you are near any trees with leaves, look at the shadows cast by the leaves for small solar crescents. You can also use solar viewing glasses or other solar filters to view the Sun directly. About 15 Minutes Before Totality

When the Moon is covering most of the Sun, watch for the ambient light to change and grow dimmer. The change will become more pronounced in the last 15 minutes before totality. The light may look eerie or strange. Even if it’s cloudy and you can’t see the Sun, the skies will still grow darker. The color of the sky and the natural light changes as totality nears, as seen in this timelapse video taken during a total solar eclipse on Aug. 21, 2017. Credits: Sarah Frazier

Against a blue sky, a small bird sits on a branch toward the top of a tree.

About 10 Minutes Before Totality

Begin to listen for changes in bird and insect sounds, or look for changes in their behavior. As the sunlight fades, wildlife might act as if nighttime is approaching. As the Sun becomes a thin crescent, shadows around you will become sharper. Look to see if you can spot more details in your own shadow. Birds, insects, or other animals might change their behavior just before totality. Credits: U.S. National Park Service

For Observers in the Path of Totality

About 3 minutes before totality.

If you are on a hill or atop a tall building, look to see if you can spot the Moon’s shadow approaching you across the landscape from the west a few minutes before totality. The sky will likely look darker in the west than in the east. In this sped-up video, recorded in Chile just before a total solar eclipse on July 2, 2019, the Moon’s shadow darkens the landscape to the west (left) as totality approaches. Credits: Vanessa Thomas

One to Two Minutes Before Totality

Look for a phenomenon called shadow bands on white or light-colored surfaces. As light from the thin, crescent Sun gets bounced around by turbulent air in our atmosphere, it produces faint, rippling waves of light and dark that can be seen on light-colored surfaces. Look close for these shadow bands on the sides or tops of white cars, white walls, or on a large, white sheet, if you have one. By now, you will likely begin to hear people around you gasping or shouting as totality nears. This video, taken in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, just before totality on Aug. 21, 2017, captures the Moon’s shadow darkening the landscape and shadow bands on the photographer’s outstretched hand . A close-up photograph of a solar eclipse, showing a bright cluster of orbs from the Sun on the lower left edge where sunlight peaks around the Moon.

Seconds Before Totality

With your solar viewing glasses or other solar filters still on, you’ll see the Moon almost completely cover the Sun, leaving a few bright spots of sunlight shining through valleys on the Moon (called Baily’s Beads) or one bright gleam of light on one side of the Moon, forming what looks like a diamond ring in the sky. Baily’s Beads appear just before and after totality when sunlight shines through valleys on the edge of the Moon. Credits: NASA/Aubrey Gemignani

The Start of Totality

Once the last glimmer of sunlight disappears and you can no longer see anything through your glasses or solar filter, it’s totality! Remove your eye protection and look at the eclipse. Chances are, people all around you will be cheering and shouting. Now you can see the Sun’s brilliant white corona, or outer atmosphere, shining all around the Moon’s black disk. Notice the shape of the corona and any long “streamers” extending across the darkened sky. The glowing white corona is a beautiful sight to behold when the Moon completely covers the Sun. Your eye might catch long “streamers,” or parts of the corona that extend farther away from the Sun across the darkened sky. Credits: NASA/Aubrey Gemignani

The eclipsed Sun, appearing as a black circle with a faint white glow. On the upper area, bright white and pink areas peak out from behind the Moon.

Prominences

Also look for pink features around the edge of the Moon. This pink color marks the middle part of the Sun’s atmosphere, the chromosphere. You might also see pink clouds of material, called solar prominences, stretching out from behind the Moon. Solar prominences appear as pink features rising from the edges of the eclipsed Sun during a total solar eclipse. Cameras can even capture them just before or after totality, as seen here. Credits: NASA/Aubrey Gemignani

A total solar eclipse is seen high in the sky against a sky that fades from dark blue, to light blue, to light orange and pink. Closer to the landscape a faint white dot is there – Venus.

Planets and Sunset-Like Glow

Farther away from the Sun and Moon, look to see if you can spot any bright planets or stars in the sky. You might even be able to spot the tail of a comet if there is one nearby! Now look at the horizon. You might notice a sunset-like glow in every direction you look – what eclipse enthusiasts call a 360-degree sunset. The planet Venus appears as a bright white dot in the sky to the lower left of the eclipsed Sun during a total solar eclipse in July 2019. Credits: Vanessa Thomas

The eclipsed Sun. In the upper right area of the eclipse, there is a bright flood of white light.

End of Totality

As totality ends, you’ll see bursts of sunlight appearing once again along the edge of the Sun. Put your eclipse glasses or other solar filters back on over your eyes and any telescopes, binoculars, or cameras. While they likely grew quiet while taking in the awe of totality, expect people around you to cheer and clap once again as sunlight begins to brighten up the sky. Look once again to see if you can spot shadow bands waving on white or light-colored surfaces. If you’re up high, look to see if you can see the Moon’s shadow race away from you toward the east. The diamond ring effect happens when a sliver of sunlight appears on the edge of the Moon, just before or after totality. Credits: NASA/Natchimuthuk Gopalswamy

Final Partial Phases

The shadow of a woman is seen on white concrete. She is holding her hands up, with her fingers crossed. Between the gaps in her fingers are the crescents of a partial solar eclipse

Pinhole Projections

As the sky grows brighter, notice the air temperature begin to rise.   Crescent suns will reappear in the shadows of tree leaves or in pinhole projections. Crescent suns appear in pinhole projections during the partial phases of a solar eclipse. Credits: Sean Simmons

End of the Eclipse

After about an hour, the Moon will completely uncover the Sun, and all will return to normal once again. A person views the Sun using eclipse glasses. Credits: NASA

After the Eclipse

The Excitement Doesn't End

Sharing your photos.

You’ll likely be excited to share your experiences and photos (if you took any) with those around you. You might want to exchange contact information with other people you met so you can share photos or videos later on. Numerous cell phones and cameras are pointed toward the total solar eclipse at the Oregon State Fairgrounds on Aug. 21, 2017. Credits: NASA/Dominic Hart

Avoiding Crowds

Many people will leave soon after totality ends. If you want to avoid crowds and traffic, wait and enjoy the final partial phases of the eclipse until the eclipse is completely over. By the time the Moon has fully moved away from the Sun and the eclipse ends, the crowds might be much thinner.

Getting Home

However, there might continue to be traffic jams on major roads and highways for a few hours. If possible, linger even longer at your current location. Enjoy dinner or conversations with others who experienced the eclipse with you, and perhaps even spend the night in the town or city where you watched the eclipse. If you need to journey home, traveling the day after the eclipse might be easier than immediately after the eclipse.

Review: Greenland on 'Scenic Eclipse II' Expedition Cruise

W e came bursting out of our cabin doors, pulling cameras from their bags faster than an Arctic gyrfalcon diving for prey. Only moments earlier, Captain Erwan Le Rouzic had come onto the ship's loudspeaker and said, "You all must come to the outside decks. There's not 10, not 20, not 50, not 100, but probably several hundred whales here. They're all around us." We had to see it.

He wasn't exaggerating. From our perch on the Observation Deck, it looked like the Fountains at the Bellagio had been stretched across the horizon, thanks to the blowhole sprays of several hundred fin and humpback whales.

"This is so rare, even for Greenland," an expedition guide told us, adding that whales don't typically travel in pods anywhere near this large and that they'd likely been enticed into this bay by an abundance of food. "It makes you feel like a real explorer."

"That's exactly why we've come," I think. In a world that's been explored to the point of overtourism, Greenland stands out. Though it's the planet's largest island (roughly three times the size of Texas), the mostly Indigenous population is made up of just 57,000 residents, and prepandemic, only about 68,000 people visited annually. (For context, Times Square sees nearly twice as many total visitors on an average day.)

Granted, visitation will likely increase in the coming years-advancements in polar sailing, such as a growing number of ships with ice-breaking abilities, are making exploration of this region more accessible. In recent years, a slew of cruise companies have launched their first trips to Greenland.

What it's like sailing on the "Scenic Eclipse II"

In fact, this was the first time the ship we were aboard, the 228-passenger Scenic Eclipse II , the latest discovery yacht in Scenic Luxury Cruises ' portfolio, which launched in April 2023, had sailed to the ice-covered isle.

The new 10-deck ship has no shortage of comforts. All cabins (which range from the two-person 344-square-foot entry-level suite to the four-person 2,745-square-foot penthouse suite) boast private balconies, mini-bars that are restocked daily, a flat-screen TV, beds with remotes that allow you to adjust pressure and position, and butler service.

Then there are the eight dining options, which include two reservation-only tasting-menu restaurants (the French-themed Lumiere, where caviar, escargot, and champagne are givens, and the Night Market, which features different Asian cuisines each night), and the invite-only Chef's Table (which boasts a 14-course gastronomic experience, complete with wine pairings). Then there's the main bar, on the lobby level, that features a wall of more than 100 complimentary whiskeys and bourbons. (If you tell your butler which you prefer, they'll arrange for a decanter of it to be left in your room.)

Other amenities include a library, a gym, a spa complex (with massages, facials, and nail and hair treatments and gendered sauna, steam, and salt therapy rooms, which are always available to guests), a laundry room (free for guests to use), and a heated plunge pool. We spent much of our time in the theater, where expedition staff give daily lectures on everything from Arctic animals to how climate change is reshaping Greenland.

As amazing as the onboard areas and offerings are, the real appeal of the ship is its ability to access wilder areas.

Because the ship doesn't need to be anchored (it holds position with stabilizers), it can tuck into areas that other, larger ships can't. And onboard toys, like kayaks and Zodiacs (eight-person inflatable, motorized boats), get passengers even closer to nature. (Although it wasn't available on our sailing, all future cruises will also have access to a custom-built submersible called the Scenic Neptune II, which can dive 650 feet.)

One day, in an Edenic bay off the coast of the Nansen Fridtjof peninsula, we loaded into a Zodiac to zoom between bits of glacial ice. Roughly 80 percent of Greenland is covered in ice. During the summer, when it's warmer, large chunks break off and float along the shore. The pieces come in all sizes, ranging from massive tabular icebergs, as big as aircraft carriers, to smaller, baseball-sized bergy bits that float like corks in the choppy water. They also come in all kinds of surrealistic shapes, like a child's winsome doodle come to life.

Another ship amenity, a pair of Airbus H130-T2 helicopters, helped us take in the landscape from on high. With Scenic Eclipse II parked before the lolling tongue of a massive tidewater glacier in the Skjoldungen Fjord, three other passengers and I were swept into the sky. From 1,000 feet, we followed the river of ice, marred with veins of crevasses hundreds of feet deep and sprinkled with pools of water so otherworldly blue that they looked like a portal into another realm through the mountain pass. Soon, we found ourselves flying over the Greenland Ice Sheet, a pure white mass that's more than 1,200 miles long and 500 miles wide, so the horizon goes on endlessly. It's a landscape that feels both lunar in its starkness and more dazzling than the brightest sunset.

We were lucky to have that window to fly. Later in the trip there were few opportunities for airborne pursuits; the cloud ceiling was too low.

The unpredictability of cruising in Greenland

On the first day, following a lecture on being responsible visitors (including avoiding trampling plant life, not petting wild dogs, and being respectful of local communities), expedition leader Xavier Garcia told all the passengers that flexibility would be key to having a memorable and enjoyable trip. Sure, we'd be stopping in a few towns (Narsaq, Nuuk, and Ilulissat), where activities like visiting with a local family over a meal of smoked Arctic char or touring museums to get a better idea of how locals have lived in such a harsh environment were planned. But our excursions outside of port towns would be determined somewhat on a day-to-day basis.

While that's true of all expedition sailings, which are characterized by visiting remote regions where the weather often scrambles plans, it's especially true on sailings to Greenland.

Unlike other expedition destinations, such as the Galápagos islands, Svalbard, and Antarctica, which have been regular offerings from cruise companies for decades, Greenland is somewhat of a newcomer to the scene. Companies are still learning where along the 27,000 miles of coastline they can stop for activities like hikes, Zodiac rides, and polar plunges. (We did a polar plunge near the spindly finger of a tidewater glacier, where the water was just above 40 degrees-most jumpers came up shivering and swearing.)

For Garcia, who'd only been to Greenland once before our sailing, that meant reading about the history of the land and ice we'd pass, looking at navigational charts, and scouting out areas with the helicopter ahead of time. They're still learning, but those itineraries will only get better as time progresses. In 2024, this itinerary will be called the Greenland Explorer- it will start in Reykjavík before sailing to Fjallfoss in Iceland's Westfjords and then onward to Greenland for 11 days. (Three days are in towns, while the rest could be spent anywhere along Greenland's coast between the Fridtjof Nansen peninsula in the southeast and Upernavik in the west.) Afterward, guests will be flown to Copenhagen, where the journey will conclude.

"We're not planning only for this voyage, we're also researching for all the years to come," Garcia told me, before adding that regardless of when guests come or where they stop, his hope for them is that what they leave with isn't just a check on their bucket list, but a relationship with this vast and rugged wilderness. That they become better stewards of this fragile environment, where climate change and the effect it has on nature and wildlife is front and center. That they become modern explorers, not in the sense that they conquered, like the sailors of old, but instead, connected.

HTR Niagara Campground & Resort in Grand Island, New York.

On Monday, April 8, a solar eclipse will be visible across North America, the like of which have not been seen since 1806. However, to experience up to 4 minutes 26 seconds of spine-tingling totality—darkness in the day and the chance to look at the sun’s spectacular corona with the naked eye—you must be in the path of totality (the yellow track on the map below).

By now, this is an open secret. Although many Americans have no conception of the path of totality (which is just 115 miles wide and a product of the moon’s shadow), there are plenty who do—and many of the hotels have been booked. Or, at least, that is the received wisdom. The reality is likely very different.

The path of totality on April 8, 2024.

Scare Stories

Many hotels do not put their full inventory online, so a web-based search is not going to uncover as many gaps as do exist (get on your phone and call them!). It’s also true that scare stories in the media are dissuading people from trying to book trips into the path of totality.

There are plenty of hotels, campgrounds and other lodging options left in the path of totality that can be booked online. They may not be low priced—and availability will likely be spotty—but there are dozens of potential options that have passed across my desk in the past few days.

Help raise awareness about eclipse safety: #showusyourspecs, glenn communications.

yacht the eclipse

NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland is encouraging the public to prepare to safely view the upcoming total solar eclipse. YOU can help us build excitement and raise awareness about eclipse safety by taking photos of people – including yourself! – wearing eclipse glasses. The goal is to show how you will be protecting your eyes during the total solar eclipse on April 8, and sharing the message on your social media channels. Be sure to tag  @NASAGlenn  and use the hashtag  #ShowUsYourSpecs  to spread the word.

Below are some key messages you can share with your posts about this amazing experience:

  • Cleveland is in the path of totality for the upcoming total solar eclipse. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and NASA’s Glenn Research Center is encouraging the public to prepare to safely view this awe-inspiring event.
  • Safety is the number one priority when viewing a solar eclipse. It is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing or  a safe handheld solar viewer . NASA is also distributing free eclipse glasses at public events leading up to the eclipse.
  • Cleveland is one of the largest major cities in its path, making it a spectacular location to view this celestial event, which Ohio won’t see again until 2099. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun.
  • The public is invited to join NASA’s Glenn Research Center and Great Lakes Science Center April 6-8 for the  Total Eclipse Fest 2024 , a three-day celebration at North Coast Harbor. NASA TV will broadcast live from the free, family-friendly event featuring hands-on activities, photo opportunities, and NASA experts from across the country who will be in Cleveland to talk about Sun science and other NASA innovations.
