RECENT WORK

While out of the water in 2018 the current owners to advantage of the opportunity to properly remove all of the many years buildup of bottom paint and get down to a nice clean wood surface again. The repainting was done with input from Petit experts to make sure that the lead keel and wood was properly treated. While in the barn and dried out a bit for the first time in years every seam in the entire hull was also gone over, vacuumed, and repayed with either underwater and topsides seam compounds for a very tight and long lasting result. The old tar pitch in the bilge to keel joint was also removed and replaced with expensive but naturally antimicrobial beeswax, like high end yachts of yesteryear. The two masts and booms, spreaders, plus wood blocks were refinished from bare wood with System Three epoxy and epoxy paint. The masts are now tan with white tips and will have much less maintenance than the previous varnish over epoxy. Virtually all of the bronze and stainless-steel fastenings on the masts/booms was replaced with new. A visual inspection of the rigging did not show anything obvious, so it was all reused. New white oak cockpit cap trim pieces were also laminated up, epoxied and clear finished. The cabin top teak hand rails were also epoxied and clear finished with System Three products. All of the bronze deck hardware on the boat was also stripped and buffed out prior to rebedding with new bronze fasteners. The teak toe rails were sanded and rebedded on the new deck. The forward hatch was taken apart, cleaned, rebuilt and screens made for it and the cockpit entrance. The winches were cleaned, lubed, and pawls-springs replaced. The areas under cockpit cover including cockpit seats and entrance deck were also sanded and revarnished. The entire interior was also refinished/revarnished as needed and all the wall hooks for sail stops etc. replaced with stainless steel ones. A new electronic depth indicator was installed in the cabin wall so it could be easily seen from the cockpit and joins the existing bulkhead compass.

Rozinante by L. F. Herreshoff

 his is one of the most popular small cruising boat designs, and with good reason. She features a relatively light and very sleek hull form compared to English canoe yawls, and her hull lines are regarded by many as some of the most beautiful ever drawn, in any genre. At 3’9” her draft is more than most canoe yawls of her size, giving her greater power to carry sail. She has a correspondingly large rig to push her along well in light air, as befits a boat that was originally intended to be engineless. A great performer in a wide range of wind strengths, she is regarded as an exceptionally sweet-sailing boat. For cruising, she features a snug cabin just large enough to provide honest sleeping and seating comfort for two people. Her large, deep cockpit offers unusually comfortable day sailing for a crowd, and is especially safe and secure-feeling, making it ideal for timid passengers or small children. With a boom tent the cockpit can become part of the overnight accommodations.   The ketch rig allows many tricks of balancing and maneuvering, which are part of the fun of sailing without an auxiliary, and allows a quick reduction of sail while retaining full control, through dropping the mainsail while retaining the jib and mizzen—a reassuring thing for a family or a singlehander, in a sudden squall. 

Like all canoe yawls she is intended to be rowed, when there is no wind or when maneuvering in close quarters, and it is surprising how a boat like this will in fact move along quite well under oars in still water. For purists the simplicity, economy, silence, and cleanliness of the oars will be part of the idea. It is also possible to fit a small auxiliary engine, and many boats have been built this way. Susurrous is a ketch rig yawl that has been well-maintained and wants for nothing. She has fresh sails and comes with a set of older sails. She has a battened mainsail and a newer furling jib. She also has a newer forestay with Hood roller furling and a Jiffy reefing mainsail, plus covers for the mainsail, mizzen, and cockpit. Susurrous buff-colored painted spars and booms are aluminum. Her sail plan and rigging are exact to L. Francis Herreshoff specifications.

She has tiller steering for a keel-hung rudder. Below deck offers a simple cabin with a comfortable v-berth for two, new v-berth cushions, and a galley with a hand pump and stove. She has a reliable electric Thunderstruck engine and easily cruises at 6 knots at 1,500RPM.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

2017 Rozinante Yawl Pictured here is the 28' Rozinante by L. Francis Herreshoff. Certainly one of the most admired yacht designs of all time. The elegeant yawls (or ketch, if you prefer) are ideal for daysailing, simple cruising and club racing. We have launched two Rozinantes and could deliver a third  next year. Like the Buzzards Bay 25 the Rozinante is built in low maintenance "West System" for exceptional strength with light weight. If today's production sailboats leave you cold, you might consider a custom yacht, either from an existing design from one of the masters (Herreshoff, Alden, Sparkman & Stephens, etc.) or from the naval architect of your choice. The word iconic is certainly overused these days, but in the case of this little L. Francis Herreshoff ketch it seems appropriate to put it to use. During her quarter-century with the same owner, CERCERELLE brought joy to the entire family. We hope that continues for whoever buys her.

Description from Boat's Main Listing

CERCERELLE is one of three Rozinante canoe yawls commissioned by L. Francis Herreshoff himself and built at the O. Lie Nielsen Boatyard in Rockland.

The keels were laid in 1972 and work progressed fastest on CERCERELLE which was launched in the fall of that year. The second boat in the group was named ROZINANTE and launched in the spring of 1973, a few months after L.Francis died.

Little can be said of the beauty and performance of the Rozinante that was not said better by LF Herreshoff himself in “The Complete Cruiser” or by Roger C Taylor in “Thirty Classic Boat Designs”

CERCERELLE’s varnished mahogany hull is in excellent condition and the cosmetics throughout have been professionally maintained at a very standard. She is a most faithful interpretation of this iconic design, right down the cedar bucket and 10’ oar.
