Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

The Georgia Queen and Savannah Riverboat Cruises

Savannah riverboat cruises’: the georgia queen..

It is a 1,000-passenger riverboat that traveled 2,800 miles down the Mississippi River, down and around the shorelines of Florida to call Savannah her home.

The Georgia Queen is a great way to see the city and is one of the most unique social gathering destinations in Savannah, but its impact on local tourism and economic development will be substantial with the added ability to attract large conferences and conventions.”

The Georgia Queen Savannah Riverboat

Built in 1995 as a luxury floating casino for 14 million dollars, the majestic 1800s paddlewheel-style riverboat spent several years traveling the Mississippi River. When gambling legislation changed, allowing land-based casinos to open, the riverboat underwent a four-million-dollar makeover. Today, this spectacular paddlewheel-style riverboat acts as Savannah Riverboat Cruises’ Savannah River Queen’s grand sister ship.

The Georgia Queen measures an impressive 230 feet long, 64 feet wide and towering at 68 feet tall.

She is among the top elite in the country with a capacity of 1,000 passengers, plus a 200-person crew, making her the size of a small cruise ship at 38,000 square feet. The ship’s entertainment spaces include three grand ballrooms with over 15,000 square feet of dining space. It offers more than 5,000 square feet of open-air top deck space with patio seating. This affords more than enough room to accommodate a romantic riverboat wedding on the Savannah River.

The Georgia Queen also boasts a multi-deck, fully equipped gourmet kitchen. It is also equipped with a large service elevator, making traveling between galleys discrete and easy. This onboard kitchen will change the entire dining experience for guests. This will allow for more plated dinner opportunities and flexibility in menu items.

The Georgia Queen

“Experiencing Savannah from our beautiful riverfront is such a unique experience,” Visit Savannah President Joseph Marinelli said.

“Savannah Riverboat’s guests are treated to refreshing breezes, fun entertainment, and some of the best southern cuisine Savannah offers. They can view Georgia’s oldest city as her founders did many years ago when they arrived by river in 1733. Jonathan and his team have been providing unforgettable narrated tours of Savannah’s harbor for 25 years. The Georgia Queen is a game-changer for their business. It will be another valuable asset to the thriving tourism and hospitality offerings of Savannah.”

The lines were very long to get drinks. It was about 2 hours long and we went down to the fort and then came back. I can say I have done it so I would not do it again. I was underwhelmed. • Relax627032 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointing savannah River trip This was definitely not value for money, not as advertised, the staff uniforms looked like they had not seen a washing machine or iron in years, dirty stained and crumpled. The food was very disappointing, cold watery mashed potato’s , cheese hot and sweaty, the crackers soft and stale. The staff were unhelpful, the food manger could not really care they were serving food that was inedible. Definitely would not recommend anyone taking a trip where food was included as all tables around us had food that could not be eaten due to reasons above. Read more Written March 24, 2024

They worked above and beyond to solve the issue and after many attempts and missed departures they allowed us to take the tour. Our tour guide Gigi was excellent very knowledgeable, witty and personal stories about many of the attractions. The seating was comfortable and environment clean. Highly recommend you won't be disappointed. Read more Written March 20, 2024

  • frazierb2024 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to learn about the "Old-Time Charm" of Savannah in a relaxed way. Highly recommend this riverboat tour to see Savannah from the water! You will learn about the action of the Savannah port and also about the military forts surrounding Savannah and the city's role in the Civil War. Definitely recommend if you are a huge history buff! My mom and I loved the old-school charm of the actual Riverboat and we had a gorgeous weather day, so we really enjoy sitting on the top deck and getting to see the scenery and wildlife around us. The narrator of the boat tour is an aspiring actor in Savannah, so he was extremely entertaining with his story telling and history narration about the city and even kept it light with a few jokes and pop-culture tidbits! I highly recommend this for anyone looking for a sit back and relax activity, while you also learn a ton! Plus, there is a great concessions stand on the boat where you can order drinks and food from. You may even see some beautiful wildlife too while on the boat as dolphins are a popular sight in the river! There is a live cannon blast as the boat passes Old Fort Jackson down the river, so make sure to bring ear-plugs if you are sensitive to that. The tour guide gave us plenty of warning before it happened, but it still caught us off guard. Another thing to note is to get in line earlier rather than later for the boat ride because the seating is first come, first serve, and they have backward facing seats if you want to avoid those. Although, the boat is moving at a pace that isn't upsetting for people prone to motion-sickness (aka my mom!). Read more Written February 25, 2024
  • 642sasha 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Skip the Valentine’s Day cruise I took the Valentine’s Day cruise which was overpriced. It was $143 with tax per person. The service should have been better based on that price. I requested vinaigrette dressing for my salad because they did not put any dressing on the salad. The waitress ignored me and I asked her several times. It seemed like such a simple request, but apparently it wasn’t. The food was average not worth more than $20. The entertainment was mediocre. I would not recommend anyone to pay for the Valentines Day cruise. The views at night was the best part of this cruise. Read more Written February 19, 2024

Enjoyed being on the water, but the narration was difficult to hear. As other reviewers stated, the views are primarily industrial. Other river traffic is interesting to see, but not a scenic nature cruise. Read more Written February 10, 2024
  • taber 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointing Cruise Very disappointing experience. A waste of money. We thought we were going of a paddle wheeler boat but it wasn't, there was no paddle wheel. There were only 2 speakers on the main deck of the boat so we could not hear the commentary. There wasn't really anything to look at while you sat on the boat. The windows were dirty. We did pass by a fort but could not hear any information about it. Read more Written February 3, 2024
  • avantikaw2023 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Save your Money Savannah Riverboat Cruises are an overpriced touist trap. We really regret purchasing this experience, and would not recommend it to others. We participated in the Sunday Brunch on New Years Day. The food was awful; lukewarm, poorly made, with very limited options. Although we had paid more for our tickets, we were the last to be served. It was utter chaos, with very little attentiveness and poor communication given to our party. The staff were unhelpful and rude, and poorly dressed with stained uniforms. The announcer/captain was obnoxious, with sophmoric humor sprinkled with shoutouts to corporate sponsors like Walmart. When you purchase your tickets, know that you are paying for a novelty Savannah experience. There is so much that this city has to offer. I would avoid this experience at all costs, and invest your time at one of the many lovely resturants or rooftop bars located throughout the city. This was a huge disappointment for our family. 16 Reasons Savannah, Georgia Is A Pedestrian Paradise

A re you looking for things to do in Savannah, Georgia, without a car? No problem! This charming southern city is a wonderful getaway with plenty of attractions and events that are enjoyable without driving your car. It is the nation’s largest registered Urban Historic Landmark District, with numerous historically and architecturally significant structures and twenty-two green squares within a two-and-a-half mile square area. You can see and do a lot on foot in Savannah.

I visited Savannah with eight other travel writers in February. We enjoyed several days of sightseeing on foot and the trolley. From historic homes and gardens to museums and restaurants, there’s something for everyone in Savannah. Don’t forget the beautiful riverfront setting with its walking paths. So if you’re visiting Savannah without a car, here is a travel guide with 17 great suggestions for enjoying the city. You’re sure to see the best of Savannah.

A trolley tour ride was provided by Visit Savannah. All opinions are my own.

1. Savannah Walking Tours

Savannah’s grid layout makes it easy to explore the town on foot! There are plenty of walking tours available that will show you all the best that the city has to offer. From historic homes to beautiful parks, you can take in all of Savannah’s sights and sounds without worrying about finding a place to park.

When we visited, a couple with us had visited multiple times and acted as our guide. We walked all over Savannah.

If you want to see the sights at your own pace, follow this guide to exploring Savannah in 10,000 steps !

Self-guided and group tours are available. Some of the most unique and popular tours are the Walk with Me Savannah Tours, Architectural Tours of Savannah , Sip n’ Shop Savannah Tours , and the 40 Acres and a Mule Tour . Another fascinating tour, Footprints of Savannah , threads a complete story of Savannah’s antebellum years into the walk.

Many of Savannah’s squares are spectacular public gardens. As we walked through Savannah, we peeked through private garden gates at scenes of breathtaking beauty. If this piques your interest, Savannah offers a yearly annual Savannah Tour of Hidden Gardens . You’re sure to see the best of Savannah.

Pro Tip: If you plan walking tours, pack footwear to accommodate all the walking.

2. Historic District

Wear your walking shoes and stroll the Savannah Historic District. You will see landmarks on every corner of Savannah’s Historic Landmark District.

Locals claim this area is the hub of the downtown scene — and it positively shines with historical beauty at every turn. It’s no wonder why tourists flock here by the thousands. It includes 22 beautiful park squares, numerous monuments, museums galore, dozens of boutiques, restaurants to please every taste bud, gorgeously restored 18th-century homes, and much more.

When we visited the northern part of the Historic District shops, we stopped at the Paula Deen Store on East Congress Street, and as we looked at the products, we noticed she was there greeting people. Evidently, she pops in often. So we met her, and a few of us had our photos taken with her.

3. Forsyth Park

Sheltered in the Historic Landmark District, the 30-acre park is known for its giant oak trees draped in Spanish moss, the gorgeous and iconic Forsyth Fountain, and the pedestrian/jogger-friendly sidewalks.

One of Savannah’s most recognizable landmarks is the huge fountain, and it is undoubtedly an Instagrammable spot to take a photo!

Locals and visitors love to take advantage of the park’s vast green, where concerts, festivals, and the Forsyth Park Farmers’ Market are held. There is abundant shade, space, and park benches to sit, relax, and enjoy the stately live oaks and nature surrounding you. This is definitely one of the most iconic spots in the city of Savannah that you don’t want to miss.

When we visited in February, people were sitting on blankets on the ground. Lots of people were out and about enjoying nature.

4. Churches

You can find several churches with deep histories and unique beauty in Savannah. Visit Savannah’s First African Baptist Church and the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist . The Congregation Mickve Israel is one of the oldest Jewish congregations in America. Savannah’s sacred spots provide plenty of photo opportunities. These historic sites are sure to teach you a lot about Savannah’s history.

5. River Street

Be sure to visit River Street when visiting Savannah. Walk the iconic cobblestone streets with breathtaking views of the Savannah River and shop, dine, and dance along this beautiful area.

We spent an afternoon browsing the stores and enjoying the view. Even in the rain, it was beautiful.

Visit Savannah has a helpful guide on “river street ” for first-time visitors.

Pro Tip: Be aware, if traveling on foot, there are several steps or a steep grade to get to River Street.

6. The Grey

The Grey , a former 1938 art-deco Greyhound Bus Station turned restaurant, has a menu full of surprisingly elevated culinary creations. This highly-acclaimed restaurant offers up elegant fare in a unique environment.

As Executive Chef of The Grey, Mashama Bailey earned the James Beard Foundation’s Best Chef Southeast award in 2019.

We stood in line and waited for this restaurant to open. We were the third group seated and dined in the booths overlooking the street by the diner bar. The Diner Bar at The Grey offers a more casual — but equally enjoyable — experience. You’ll love the delicious food and southern hospitality.

The Hostess City of the South, as Savannah is commonly called, is home to several museums that are worth a visit. The Telfair Museum of Art is the oldest art museum in the South, and the Georgia State Railroad Museum is perfect for train enthusiasts.

There are also several history museums, including the Davenport House Museum and the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters , which provide an insightful look into Savannah’s past.

Several in our group got a kick out of visiting the American Prohibition Museum . These museums give visitors insight into pre- and post-Civil War era United States.

8. Lucas Theatre For The Arts

Catch a show at the 1,200-seat Lucas Theatre for the Arts . It was the first public building in Savannah to have air conditioning. They host significant events such as the Savannah Music Festival, the Savannah Philharmonic, and the Savannah Film Festival.

9. Colonial Park Cemetery

Stroll through Savannah’s Colonial Park Cemetery for a glimpse of the past. Located in the National Landmark Historic District, the nearly six-acre cemetery is the final resting place for numerous early Savannah residents.

The oldest intact municipal cemetery in Savannah, historic markers beside graves identify important people and events contributing to the state of Georgia’s history. More than 9,000 graves, including that of a Georgia signer of the Declaration of Independence, Button Gwinnett, can be found in the Colonial Park Cemetery. The cemetery has been closed to interments since 1853 and has paved walkways throughout, making it almost like a park.

10. Savannah Theatre

The oldest theater in America, Savannah Theatre , was built in 1818 with an art deco style. The 525-seat theater is still putting on shows today! Check their schedule to see what’s playing during your visit.

11. City Market

City Market is one of the most popular places in Savannah, especially if you’re looking for souvenirs or local artwork. The market is home to several galleries and shops selling everything from paintings to pottery to jewelry. You can also find plenty of places to grab a bite to eat, making it the perfect place to spend an afternoon exploring.

12. Ghost Tours

Savannah is known for its ghosts and plenty of tours will take you to some of the most haunted spots in the city. If you’re feeling brave, you can even go on a “ghost hunt,” where you’ll use ghost-hunting equipment to find some spirits!

Our group went on a ghost tour one evening in Savannah. Some of us may have spotted unusual orbs roaming the area. It was great fun and a highlight for several. One popular stop for many ghost tours is the Mercer Williams House . However, this is also a close walk from Forsyth Park if you’re looking to get to know the history of this mansion more. This is a great experience if you’re looking for some fun nightlife activities in the city.

If You Have A Car: Bonaventure Cemetery

This is not within walking distance from downtown and is somewhat farther out from the main Savannah area, but it is worth a visit if you have a car. Bonaventure Cemetery is one of Savannah’s most popular tourist attractions, and it’s easy to see why. Considered one of America’s most beautiful cemeteries, it is filled with gorgeous live oak trees, Spanish moss, beautiful monuments, and statues. It’s also home to many famous “residents,” including poet Conrad Aiken and Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low.

Wander through Bonaventure Cemetery and learn about some of Savannah’s most famous residents. Besides the Bonaventure Cemetery, one cool place to see if you have a car is the Savannah College of Art .

Other Ways To See Savannah

If your feet are tired of walking or you want a speedier method of seeing the sights of Savannah, several options do not require a car to navigate the city.

13. Trolley Tours

All types of trolley tours are available throughout the Historic District of Savannah. The iconic garden green and bright orange trolleys of Old Town Trolley Tours of Savannah take locals and visitors alike around the city. We hopped on the classic white, Old Savannah Tours trolley to enjoy costumed characters who join your ride along the way. Visitors can save on multiple tour tickets by using the discounted TourPass option.

14. Carriage Ride

For a truly unique experience, take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the streets of Savannah. You’ll learn about the city’s rich history as you clip-clop your way through its cobblestone streets and see beautiful architecture and some of its most popular landmarks along the way.

Carriage rides are available throughout the day.

One of the best ways to see Savannah from a different perspective is by taking a riverboat cruise down the Savannah River. You’ll get great views of the city skyline and learn about its rich history while enjoying a leisurely ride down the river.

The Savannah Belles Ferry offers multiple departures from two locations. You can board the ferry on River Street or at the Savannah Convention Center. The ferry departs every 10-20 minutes and it’s completely free!

If none of these options suit, you can “ride” free of charge on the DOT public transportation bus . The DOT helps visitors and residents get around downtown Savannah and includes shuttles serving 18 stops, plus the Savannah Belles Ferry. This map shows all the stops.

If you’re looking for things to do in Savannah without a car, we’ve got you covered. From the city center and historic district to the riverfront, plenty of attractions and activities are within walking distance.

I-95 widening aims to address 'awful' stretch from Savannah into South Carolina

Relief is on the way for drivers who for years have endured persistent bottlenecks crossing the Savannah River from Georgia into South Carolina on Interstate 95.

Or just avoided that section altogether.

“I don’t go home on holidays because of it,” said Angela Hendrix, senior vice president of marketing and public relations at the Savannah Economic Development Authority (SEDA) and a Rock Hill, South Carolina, native. “I’ve seen too many people life-flighted out of there from wrecks. I just won’t do it.”

On the Savannah side, vehicles headed toward the state line are funneled from three lanes down to two as they approach the bridge.

“It’s no different than sand going through an hourglass,” added SEDA President and CEO Trip Tollison.

The two-lane configuration continues in both directions on the Palmetto State side.

That will change with a $360 million South Carolina Department of Transportation project to widen a 10-mile stretch of I-95 from just inside the Georgia state line to the U.S. 278 interchange in Hardeeville.

The work, scheduled to begin next year and be completed in 2032, will include a new six-lane bridge across the river.

Along I-95: $35 million deal protects 4,400-acre Lowcountry parcel ripe for development

An average of 64,000 vehicles a day pass through the section of highway, according to state data. In addition to far exceeding its designed capacity, that stretch is among the worst rural interstates for moving freight, a 2021 SCDOT report concluded.

That assessment is no surprise to Tollison.

“It is an awful situation all the way from the Savannah River Bridge to I-26,” he said. “The road is crappy, there’s potholes, it’s just not maintained well.”

The project is welcome news for the Georgia Ports Authority, which operates the ports of Savannah and Brunswick.

“(GPA) applauds any effort to improve the efficiency and safety of transportation for commuters and freight carriers, especially on a high-volume route such as I-95,” spokesman Edward Fulford said. “Widening the interstate should reduce congestion and ease the flow of traffic.”

The project will include round-the-clock work at times, but two lanes of traffic will be maintained in both directions during daylight hours, according to SCDOT spokeswoman Hannah Robinson.

SEDA’s Tollison suggested the deteriorating condition of I-95 on the South Carolina side of the river illustrates a contrast in approach between the two states.

“Georgia has been very, very good about responding to the needs and planning ahead,” he said. “It's just a different environment in South Carolina.”

WEATHER ALERT

A warning and 2 advisories in effect for 6 regions in the area

What you need to know about art in the park: northeast florida’s only chalk drawing competition.

Art in the Park Jax, Northeast Florida’s only chalk drawing competition, returns for a fourth year to Jacksonville with the theme “Under the Sea.”

The festival, which is open to the whole family, was voted “Best Art Festival” in 2023 by Jacksonville Magazine readers. The organizers brought it to Jacksonville four years ago after being inspired by a similar event in Savannah.

During the competition from 12-5 p.m. Saturday at James Weldon Johnson Park, artists of all ages will have up to six hours to create a work of art entirely from chalk. The 50 artists are divided into professional and student categories.

Visitors to the park will be able to watch the art happening right before their eyes, talk to the artists and vote on which ones they like best. There will also be other activities at the park that visitors can participate in.

To get in the spirit, Rance, Jana and YaYa had their own chalk drawing competition Monday morning on River City Live. Watch the video above to see their um, special , creations.

The event is presented by YaYa Productions and Friends of James Weldon Johnson Park and is made possible through a generous grant from the PNC Foundation and support from Alive Credit Union.
