Set Sail With Lessons in Ocean City

ocean city yacht club sailing camp

By MADDY VITALE

Learning to sail may be a dream for some. But for the many people who have taken lessons from the Ocean City Sailing Foundation (OCSF), it has become a reality.

And now, people who wish to try their skills on a boat and for others who want to continue honing their mariner techniques, classes begin June 20 and go through Aug. 20.

OCSF offers four and five day morning and afternoon weekly classes. In addition, private lessons are available.

Classes are held at the Bayside Center, 520 Bay Ave. Top instructors are US Sailing Certified. They will teach children and adults alike how to navigate the bays, the ocean and develop mariner skills that will last a lifetime.

“We have about 150 campers a summer. Typically, the kids do the sailing in the morning. They have a great time and then they go to the beach with their families,” John Parker, former president and current vice president of OCS, told OCNJDaily.com. “The older kids come in the afternoon.”

ocean city yacht club sailing camp

While the classes offered varies from private to group, and there are different skill levels and price ranges, Parker said that families who participate in the lessons together find it is money well spent.

“There is some expense to taking sailing lessons, but we provide the boats, the life jackets, all we ask is that the kids are 8 years old or older and know how to swim,” he said, adding that the classes also include swim lessons each Monday morning to sharpen the swimming skills.

Parker said he knows why the program has been around for 15 years and seems to grow each year.

“We have found that many of our youth students return for a second or third year because they enjoyed sailing and being out on the water,” he pointed out.

Many of the students are from Ocean City or the surrounding communities.

“Several of our students and their families have a house here and joined the (Ocean City) yacht club,” he said.

Doug Mroz, the foundation’s Sailing Director for five years now, is a true asset to the organization, Parker added.

“He does an excellent job,” he said.

The OCSF would not be a success if it wasn’t for the generosity of both the city and the people in it for continued support of the non-profit organization.

“We survive with the generous donations of Ocean City and the surrounding area,” Parker said.

The foundation leases the city-owned Bayside Center space for the program.

“The City of Ocean City has been a great supporter of the Sailing Foundation,” he said.

He also pointed out that Daniel Kelchner, director of Ocean City Community Services, has been very supportive of the foundation and is an active member.

Kelchner complimented the foundation’s sailing program and the people who make up the organization.

“The Ocean City Sailing Foundation is an incredible asset for our community. They are a core program at the Bayside Center during the summer months and provide outstanding educational and experiential learning opportunities for people of all ages,” Kelchner said.

He continued, “The Sailing Foundation’s programs complement the City’s environmental science camps at the Bayside Center perfectly and really help to round out a full slate of nautical, science-based learning opportunities that help make the Bayside Center so unique.”

ocean city yacht club sailing camp

Stay tuned for details about our May overnight trips as Alyosha returns to Ocean City… In the meantime, have a fantastic Holiday Season and may we have some more peace on earth!

ocean city yacht club sailing camp

Sail the Boat that Sailed the World!

Try something completely different and come sailing on our 50’ catamaran, Alyosha! We offer several trips each day, usually at 1pm, 4pm and sometimes a “Sunset Cruise” in the evening. Occasionally we depart as early as 10am! Alyosha can take up to 12 people and has a men’s and women’s restroom for your use throughout the trip.

All of our sailing adventures can be catered- we have partnered with OC’s best events company, Taste Events, to provide that option. (Catered trips are offered only with a minimum of a 6 person booking). Additionally, feel free to bring beverages of your choice aboard. There are plenty of options to keep things cold. Choose from one of the following sailing experiences:

Ocean Sailing!

See another side of Ocean City from the Atlantic Ocean. This 3 hour cruise will allow you to experience the pure joy of sailing fast on a 50’ catamaran! The incredible views, marine life on display, and fun captain and crew, will make this unforgettable.

Hands On Sailing

Interested in something more “hands on?” Assist the Captain and Crew of Alyosha and learn some of the basics of blue water sailing. Offered only at specific times during the week.

Sunset Cruise

Enjoy an evening on the ocean and watch the sun set on Ocean City from the water. These trips are typically shorter in duration (approx. 90 minutes) but still provide the thrill of sailing in a romantic setting.

Private Charters

Interested in a more intimate experience for just close friends and family? Alyosha is available for private charters at times when she is not scheduled to run trips. (You need to book the whole boat!)

Cruise on Alyosha, a 50ft sailing Catamaran, out into the Atlantic for a beautiful view of the Sunset. If you are worried about your comfort during our longer “Ocean Sailing” and “Hands On” trips, then this shorter trip out into the Atlantic might be something to consider. Generally, the sunset cruise will depart about 45 minutes before sunset and will return at dusk. (about 75-80 minutes) Watch the sun set on Ocean City from the Atlantic Ocean as you glide along the coastline under sail. Lounge on the trampoline or enjoy any of the other excellent seating options that this 50′ boat has available. This is a “must do” experience in Ocean City!

Offered only during a full moon on 6 selective nights throughout the summer! This is a chance to sail the Atlantic under moon light as the sailors have been doing for centuries! You will not believe how different of an experience this can be. Trips last 2 hours later in the evening.

Join us for a hands on sailing adventure that will include some very basic lessons on the basics of sailing. Captain Steve Butz has over 35 years of sailing experience and recently completed a circumnavigation on Alyosha. He has logged over 40,000 nautical miles on the boat. Expect to participate in raising, lowering and adjusting the sails as Alyosha gracefully glides under wind power! No question is off limits as Steve is happy to pursue whatever topics interest sailors looking to boost their knowledge or stoke the interest of newbys to the sport. This trip- which is our longest experience at 3 1/2 hours- is for those wanting more than just a ride in the Atlantic Ocean. You will leave with a deeper appreciation of the sport of sailing and the physics behind it.

Throughout the summer there are occasionally events that can best seen from the water, including the Ocean City Air Show, 4th of July fireworks, and select music concerts. There is also a chance to accompany the Captain as Alyosha transits between Baltimore and Ocean City.

Book Alyosha for your next event or group outing! Private charters for up to 12 people are available on request. Private charters are generally reserved by contacting us directly and may not be joined by others.

Catering Now Available!

We’ve partnered with Off the Hook Restaurant Group’s Taste Events to provide several options to compliment your sailing experience. Click below for more information on our catering options, how to order catering for your cruise, and more!

All Aboard!

Our trips from Ocean City originate from Mad Fish Bar & Grill in West Ocean City.

2024 Summer Program

Please read everything carefully since there are several changes to this year sailing program.

TWO WEEK PROGRAM: This year, all sessions of the two week camp are designed for beginner sailors. If you are interested in registering for TWO sessions, we STRONGLY encourage you to register for the half season program. This will ensure more individual attention and on-the-water time! NO SAILORS under the age of 7 or above the age of 12 or over 110 lbs. should register for the 2 week camp. BOAT DAMAGE & REPAIRS:  Boats DO sustain damage! All it takes is an unexpected gust of wind to jibe a boat and send the end of a boom through someone else's sail or a bow into a hull. The INVOLVED parties are required to jointly come to a resolution regarding repairs. Typically, the involved parties split the cost of the repairs. OGYC bears no responsibility in these matters and does not act as a mediator to resolve the damages. OGYC maintains a small amount of spare parts for OPTI's and Sunfish. These can be purchased from the club at a reasonable price. The maintenance of your boat is the responsibility of the owner, but where possible, we will endeavor to help our sailors repair their boat.

Register each sailor one at a time beginning with Full Day Sailors, then Half Season Program, then River Rookies, and then Puddle Ducks. Sailing Registration      Instructions for Members to Sign up for Jr. Sailing

Smooth Sailing at Summer Camp in Sea Isle

ocean city yacht club sailing camp

By DONALD WITTKOWSKI

Mac Brogan has ambitious plans for someone so young.

The 9-year-old already envisions himself becoming a competitive sailor at an advanced level.

“I want to race,” he said, confidently. “Eventually, I want to race a bigger boat.”

For now, Mac is taking beginner lessons at the Yacht Club of Sea Isle City in tiny, dinghy-like sailboats that ply the calm waters of the idyllic back bays.

Ever since the Yacht Club was founded in 1940, it has taught generations of young people, from ages 8 to 18, the art of sailing in a summer camp at the Jersey Shore.

“We’re talking about multigenerational sailors,” said Jesse Price, the Yacht Club’s sailing coordinator.

ocean city yacht club sailing camp

As it does every summer, the Yacht Club sponsors a camp that introduces children to sailing in an exciting and safe way. Hoping to draw as many children as possible, the camp is also open to nonmembers of the Yacht Club.

“They come from all over the place. Name a state or one nearby and they probably come from there. Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Delaware …” Price said of the young sailors enrolled in the camp.

Mac Brogan actually comes from another country. His parents, Joe and Aileen Brogan, are living in Switzerland while Mac is spending the summer in Sea Isle with his grandmother, Mary Anne McCarthy, who is Aileen’s mother. McCarthy lives in Langhorne, Pa., and has a summer vacation home in Sea Isle.

While watching Mac sail around the channel next to the Yacht Club on Friday, McCarthy recalled the reaction her grandson had the first time he was in the sailing camp last year.

“When I picked him up on the first day of sailing last year, he told me that it was the best day of his life,” McCarthy said, smiling. “He’s only 9. For a guy who is so young, it’s pretty amazing.”

ocean city yacht club sailing camp

When he brought his sailboat back to the dock Friday, Mac talked about how much fun he had on the water.

“I like to drive the boat and pull in the sails,” he said. “I like to go fast.”

The Yacht Club of Sea Isle City is a participating member of the Mid-Atlantic Yacht Racing Association and hosts a regatta each summer. Participants in the sailing camp can showcase their skills by competing in other races during the summer, Price said.

“The racing environment is a great place to show what they’ve learned,” he said. “It’s a very friendly environment.”

This summer, the sailing camp started on June 13 and will end the week of Aug. 8. The cost is $300. The Yacht Club supplies the sailboats to keep the camp affordable, Price noted.

Price caps the number of sailors at 40 per week – 20 for the morning sailing lessons and 20 in the afternoon.

“For a lot of the kids, like the ones we have today, this is their first year of sailing. One of the things I like to focus on is team-building. Then I like to focus on responsibilities,” Price said of some of the main points he emphasizes to the children.

ocean city yacht club sailing camp

Price, a former Ocean City resident who now lives in Marmora, formerly taught sailing lessons at the Ocean City Yacht Club and the Ocean City Sailing Foundation.

During their lessons in Sea Isle, the young sailors are under the watchful eye of the sailing instructors as well as safety crews that are out in boats.

Price explained that all instructors are certified in first aid and CPR. They also carry cellphones and radios to remain in constant contact.

As a further safety precaution, the kids are limited in how far they can sail out in the back bay, based on their experience level.

“The big thing is having a safe place to sail and having other people to sail with,” Price said.

“We take safety very seriously,” he added.

ocean city yacht club sailing camp

As part of its promotional literature, the Yacht Club says that the sailing camps “teach sound basic seamanship skills, build confidence and help our students become proficient recreational sailors, or go all the way to be award-winning competitive sailors.”

“The Yacht Club of Sea Isle City has had a longstanding commitment to promoting sailing lessons along the Jersey Beaches. Since our club’s beginning in 1940, the club has kept sailing lessons and recreational sailing for young people its main focus,” it says on its website.

Some families have been participating in the sailing camps for years. Price noted that some of the children of the sailing instructors have become instructors themselves after growing up.

Ocean City resident Emery Hurst, one of the Yacht Club instructors now, first began taking sailing lessons in the summer camp when she was just 7 years old. She fondly recalled those times Friday.

“When I think of my childhood, everything happened with sailing,” she said.
