Bang for your buck: First launched as a passenger ship in 1997, Dream emerged from an extensive refit in 2018 undertaken by Olympic Yacht Services with the help of designers Giorgio Vafiadis and Ciarmoli Queda Studio . Interior spaces are spread across six decks and are well equipped for glamorous events and parties, with dining spaces, including a special Teppanyaki hot table for up to 44 guests. Other highlights on board include a spa, cinema, sundeck infinity pool, a business centre with a board room, a helipad and a beach club stocked with diving gear.

Dream is managed for charter by Hill Robinson.

Stats: 108 metres, Benetti, 2019, 12 guests, 30 crew

Bang for your buck : At 108 metres, Ije is Benetti ’s astounding flagship with exterior design by British design studio, RWD . But it's not just her elegant exterior that places her among the most expensive yacht for charter, as she features an incredible list of amenities including a gym, cinema, spa and nightclub with a DJ set up. Her interiors are bright thanks to her large windows and natural colour palette. With more than 1,000 square metres of outdoor deck space, Ije is an entertainer at heart, not to mention her large collection of water toys and swimming pools on board.

Bang for your buck: One of the biggest launches of 2019, Madsummer is available for charter and she doesn't come at a small price. Featuring a 12-metre swimming pool and dedicated spa, there's plenty of opportunities to unwind on board. There’s even a self-playing Steinway piano on board.

Madsummer is managed for charter by Moran Yacht & Ship .

Stats: 90m, Oceanco , 2018, 12 guests, 31 crew

Bang for your buck : Since she was delivered in 2018, the world has looked on in awe at her extraordinary glass atrium – constructed of seamless black glass that encloses the superstructure. In fact, Dar has around 390 square metres of glass in the superstructure alone, not counting doors and hull windows. Once inside, the result is said to be like floating in mid-air, with no boundaries or distortion and complete privacy, so there is a reason that she’s up there with the very finest superyachts to charter.

Designed by Luiz De Basto, Dar’ s exteriors are inspired by that of a hammerhead shark, with a well-balanced flowing profile, shapely wing stations, representing its wide-set eyes, and dorsal fin-style mast. She remains one of the most recognisable vessels in the fleet today, turning heads wherever she goes.

Dar is available for charter with Edmiston .

The Largest Top 100 Private Luxury Charter Yachts & Superyachts in the World > See the List Below!

The Top 100 Largest & Most Significant Luxury Yacht Charter Superyachts in the World by length, price, size, importance and newness:

There have been many articles written over the years about the 100 biggest superyachts in the world, by a host of authors. I think the first one was written by Power & Motor Yacht years ago. The list changes a little every year. The very large luxury yacht builders such as Lurssen or OceAnco launch another big boat, now and again (the biggest are mostly German or Dutch). For instance, the yachting community was abuzz with the launch of yacht ECLIPSE late last year. That yacht went straight to the top to displace DUBAI at the top (though by how much is not as yet clear). It should be noted that the ‘largest superyachts in the world list’ is intrinsically subjective to an extent. An author can choose tonnage, displacement or LOA (most common) as a measure of a yacht’s size. Then there is also some secrecy as to the actual size of some of the mega yachts.

Anyway, here I’m writing about the biggest charter yachts in the world because it hasn’t been done definitively yet. I think there will be some interest. Keep in mind these are boats that can actually be rented for a holiday in various worldwide locations. They represent the pinnacle of useable or available luxury in the world – I would argue more so than any other coveted luxury holiday in a resort or villa, or anything else for that matter. The benefits a yacht charter vacation offer, over and above other holidays, is well established. I don’t need to get into that here.

Needless to say, these boats are currently chartered by some of the worlds most wealthy, influential and famous people. They are definitely important people, just like the yacht’s owners. The superyachts below have been visited and enjoyed by presidents, prime ministers, movie stars, rock stars, leading entrepreneurs – the movers and shakers of the world. Obviously the people who charter the top 100 luxury yachts cannot be named but rest assured that many of them are stars in their own right, just like the yacht owners.

As with the ‘biggest yachts in the world list’, the ‘largest charter yachts list’ can vary depending on criteria. Accordingly, I’ve decided to use two different concepts for the list.  The first is simply the largest boats by LOA, or length over all. This is a traditional (if not scientifically imprecise) measure of ship size.

The second ingredient will also factor in the other considerations like displacement, or to put it another way the yachts bulk, along with the approximate charter rate or cost to rent the yacht and crew for a week. It will also factor in the newness and buzz factor created by the yacht in question. This second consideration could be termed ‘The Most Expensive Significant & Important Luxury Yacht Charters in the World’.

The price to charter the boats is the high rate before expenses like fuel, berthage and supplies are included (adding another 25 - 35 % depending and the preferences of the charter guests). Price can be subject to change and there are different prices for different seasons, so this is only historically approximate for the purpose of the list.

To recap: because all four measurements, a yacht’s length, size, price and newness are important they are all amalgamated in to create the list of the most important or most significant 100 luxury charter yachts in the world.

And lastly, (I couldn’t resist) I have created the ‘Top 100 luxury superyachts in the world in 2010’ list. This is all yachts, not just charter yachts.

The world’s most expensive yachts for charter

Home > Relevance Yacht News > The world’s most expensive yachts for charter

Posted by Joanna Lewis 16 Aug 2023

The luxury yacht charter market was valued at US$18.9 billion in 2021 and is projected to reach $26.5 billion by 2027. And it’s no surprise that this market is booming. According to the latest Wealth-X Ultra-Wealth Report , there are 295,450 UHNWIs globally, and their wealth is growing, with 69% of these wealthy individuals expecting their wealth to increase this year.

The boom in luxury yacht charters can also be attributed to the changing lifestyle habits of the world’s ultra-rich. These wealthy individuals are increasingly seeking exclusive and private experiences tailored to meet their precise needs. A luxury yacht charter offers a self-sufficient sanctuary, enabling UHNWIs to tailor every element of their getaway while enjoying ultra-lux amenities and world-class service that rivals the world’s most exclusive resorts – all with the utmost discretion.

Catering to this booming market and the demands of UHNWIs is a growing fleet of ultra-luxurious superyacht charter vessels, with the world’s most exclusive commanding charter fees of over 1 million Euros per week.

The World’s Most Expensive Yachts for Charter

This year has seen two of the most expensive superyachts in the world join the charter market.

By Owen Fay

The past few years have seen two of the most expensive yachts in the world join the charter market. Lana,   O’Pari and Octopus are now available for hire priced at $2.1m and $1.1m and $2.2m per week, respectively. Freshly launched, these stunning ships add to an already impressive array of superyachts on the charter market right now.

When they were first released, these ships entered an industry that is facing unprecedented challenges, with the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic still reverberating. However, as cases began to drop and travel back on the menu, chartered superyachts became the most favorable vacation option to those who could afford it, with privacy and the opportunity for splendid isolation away from crowded airports and resorts both big draws.

Here, we look at the esteemed company that Lana and O’Pari will be joining with some of the most expensive superyachts to charter.

Rate: From $3,517,000 per week Location: Mediterranean (year-round) Built: 2019 Length: 446.2 ft Guests: 25 in 11 cabins (up to 36)

Built by Lürssen and delivered in 2019, Flying Fox (pictured above) is the most significant addition to the charter market in recent times. The weekly charter fee puts her at the most expensive yacht in the world. This means she is in reach of just a select few, with Beyoncé and Jay-Z choosing her for their summer vacation in 2021.

We have covered Flying Fox in greater detail, but in short, this is a one-of-a-kind vessel that offers a truly unique experience. At a hulking 446 ft, space is no issue with the yacht home to two helipads, a two-story spa, a 40-ft swimming pool, which is unique for a yacht of this size, and a full gym and beauty center, among other similarly impressive features.

It is worth drawing special attention towards the vessel’s cryotherapy chamber, as it was the first to ever be installed on a private yacht and can reach -166 Fahrenheit. With 54 expert staff on board, including some former Olympians, Flying Fox is well-equipped to look after up to 36 guests, either in the West Mediterranean in the summer months, or the East Mediterranean for the rest of the year. Whichever option is chosen, this superyacht is the peak luxury experience.

octopus is one of the most expensive yachts to charter

Arguably one of Lurssen’s most iconic yacht builds, despite being first delivered in 2003 Octopus  has only recently come to the charter following a sale. The 414.1-ft ice-class vessel isn’t short on exciting features to shout about, with two helipads, seven tenders, a swimming pool, library and even a glass-bottomed aquarium. Accommodations are suitably luxurious with a lavish master suite and two VIP apartments, as well as seven doubles and three twin rooms.

Octopus  has seen plenty of sights in her lifetime with her first owner, the late Paul Allen, frequently loaning her out for exploration projects and research missions. While her new owner remains undisclosed, it has been noted that they are keen for her to continue being used for meaningful expeditions – as well as the odd cruise around paradise, of course.

When she was first delivered in 2020, Lana took the title of Benetti’s largest-ever build at 351 ft and a maximum beam of 50 ft. While she has now been surpassed by the likes of Luminosity and M/Y IJE, she’s still a force to be reckoned with, and the $2.1m weekly fee goes a long way with this much space. Benetti’s Italian craftsmanship is on display in the seven VIP staterooms, along with one master suite. The rooms are able to accommodate 12 guests in these eight cabins, with each room equipped with an individual color scheme and panoramic windows.

Lana is kitted out with everything we have come to expect with a superyacht of this size, featuring a spa, gym, cinema, helipad, and outdoor pool. Perhaps most striking is its Beach Club which comes with folding terraces. Currently situated in the Middle East, this impressive superyacht is well-prepared for a full season of cruising.

Delivered 12 weeks ahead of schedule in the summer of 2019, Madsummer is a striking vessel, designed by the renowned Espen Oeino. Studio Laura Sessa furnished the interior, making use of a broad and bold color palette. Each of the 10 staterooms have a custom color scheme that is both contemporary and tastefully finished. Sessa has applied similar levels of customization throughout the ship. One notable detail of this is the custom-built dining table (a work of art in itself), which is topped off with layers of colored lacquer for a beautiful result.

For the nautically inclined, the ultra-modern bridge is situated alongside the master suite, allowing the charterer easy access to the organizational hub of the yacht. The vessel’s fundamentals are state-of-the-art, with a 125kW, lithium-ion battery pack as just one example of this. This battery means less fuel is required and helpfully retains any excess energy produced.

Also a relatively new vessel, Lady S was delivered in 2019 by Dutch builder Feadship. The interior was designed by Reymond Langton and described by them as “a contemporary jewelry box”, with the glitzy white and crystal chandeliers just one detail that highlights the truth behind this statement. Such is the quality of its construction Lady S was the recipient of two awards from Boat International for both its interior and exterior design.

Beyond aesthetics, the vessel is equipped with all the amenities and facilities that any charterer could desire, making her worthy of being on any list of the most expensive yachts. This includes the very first IMAX cinema to be installed on a yacht, a basketball court and ice plunge pool, along with all else that you would expect in this price range.

Aquarius is an eye-catching vessel. Her all-white four-deck exterior was designed by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design and built by Feadship. The company was also responsible for its interior, one of its notable features being the floor-to-ceiling windows that surround its outsides. In keeping with its ambitious glass work, there is a bar at water level underneath a glass-bottom pool, that when emptied can turn into a dance floor. Based in the Mediterranean in the summer and the Caribbean in the winter, Aquarius has six VIP cabins, with a private deck for the master suite, suitable for 14 guests in total.

Kismet has more than a touch of glamour about her, previously hosting Beyoncé and Jay-Z, along with other celebrities, while it has recently featured in ‘Six Underground’, Michael Bay’s $150 million film. With this level of celeb appeal, it’s no surprise that she’s one of the most expensive yacht charters on the market. The appeal is clear with the ability to hold large parties for up to 270 guests and two helipads for ease of access for the world’s ultra-high-net-worth individuals.

Owned by Shadid Khan, owner of NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars, Kismet features a large silver jaguar at the bow in a nod to his team. The interior was designed by Reymond Langton, who was inspired by “champagne and caviar”.

Lengton has successfully combined traditional opulence with the latest technology, including state-of-the-art video walls that can switch between regular television and moving artwork. The deck is laid with black marble, while the master suite’s bathroom contains an onyx bath that oozes glamor.

best superyachts to charter

This striking (and expensive) yacht is sure to turn heads wherever she goes. Designed by Winch Design, Excellence remains at the forefront of what a modern superyacht should look and feel like. The curved floor-to-ceiling mirrored glass is designed to reflect her surroundings. Natural light floods through the triple-height glass atrium and the full-height windows. Her striking and angular plumb bow gives her the unmistakable look of a futuristic spaceship. There is a large swimming pool with a swim-up bar on the main deck aft and an upper deck entirely dedicated to the owner. Above the owner’s deck is the substantial sun deck with a lounge area and jacuzzi. There is also a large water-level tender garage where the yacht’s limousine tenders are stored.

At just under 312 ft, O’Pari is the largest superyacht Greek yard Golden Yachts has produced and was delivered in June of this year, quickly becoming one of the most expensive yachts in the world. Both the interior and exterior were designed by Studio Vafiadias and part of the brief was to commission a custom art collection for display onboard.

The theme chosen for this was the relationship between man and nature, a particularly apt choice given the generous outdoor space on O’Pari . This includes a huge sky lounge, with panoramic ocean views, as well as a bar with DJ booth and an alfresco dining area on the upper deck. Also on the upper deck is the master suite with all other guests suites located on the main deck. Available to charter in some of the most attractive regions in the world, the Golden Yachts flagship is an outright success and is one of the most attractive high-end options out there.

Al Saïd Lürssen

As superyachts continue to get bigger and more extravagant than ever before, so too do the accompanying price tags. According to the Boats Group’s market index, the average cost of a yacht above 80 feet in the US last year was $5.3 million. As you’ll see below, though, there are a handful of high-end vessels that blow that figure out of the water.

Although it’s difficult to get exact prices in what is a fiercely secretive industry, sales of luxury yachts have surged amid the pandemic and the ultra-wealthy are more willing than ever to fork out for ostentatious ocean goers. Case in point: Billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos reportedly parted with $485 million for his Oceanco megayacht that’s currently in build.

Believe it or not, that’s quite a modest price compared to at least half of the entries on this list. Lürssen’s Dilbar , for instance, is rumored to have cost in the ballpark of $800 million. As alluded to, the shipyards behind these lavish, nine-figure designs seldom share details regarding ownership or price. Therefore, the amounts cited here are estimates pulled together from Wikipedia and other reliable sources. Still, the 15 vessels here give you a good idea of what’s possible when money is no object and the best builders in the business are at your whim.

Lürssen: ‘Dilbar’ — $800 Million

EU authorities began to seize Russian Oligarch's superyachts

Delivered in 2016, Lürssen’s Dilbar is the largest motor yacht in the world by gross tonnage. It’s also the most expensive with an original price tag in the ballpark of $800 million. Weighing in at 15,917 tons, the monolithic 512-footer is one of the most complex and challenging vessels the German yard has ever built. Penned by Espen Øino, Dilbar features a classic profile and a light ivory hull with bronze accents. Onboard, meanwhile, the elegant interiors were brought to life by Winch Design and outfitted with only the best luxury materials. The pièce de résistance is, of course, the 82-foot swimming pool. Lürssen says it is the largest pool ever to have been installed on a yacht. Seafarers also have access to 41,000 square feet of saloons, staterooms, spas and cinemas to explore. German authorities impounded Dilbar earlier this year after establishing it was linked to a Russian billionaire. According to the US Treasury Department, the yacht is now worth between $600 million and $700 million, with annual maintenance costs of about $60 million.

Blohm+Voss: ‘Eclipse’ — $600 Million

Blohm & Voss "Eclipse" Superyacht

The epic 533-foot Blohm+Voss superyacht Eclipse took half a decade to come to fruition before it was finally delivered to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich in 2010. At that time, it was the largest yacht in the world and certainly one of the most expensive. It has now been 20-odd years and Eclipse still sits at the top of both lists and is estimated to be worth over $600 million. Designed inside and out by Terence Disdale, the vessel is equipped with 17 staterooms, a 185-foot-long owner’s deck with a palatial owner’s suite, a giant swimming pool that doubles as a dance floor, a gym, a beach club and a spa. Other highlights include a helicopter hangar with space for three choppers and a garage that can hold six tenders. On top of that, Eclipse has a top-end speed of 21 knots, with a range of 6,000 nautical miles.

Lürssen: ‘Azzam’ — $600 Million

most expensive yacht rentals

Lürssen has proven itself adept at delivering sizable (and expensive) vessels. In fact, the German yard is behind the world’s longest superyacht, which reportedly set one private owner back more than $600 million. Delivered in 2013, Azzam measures just shy of 593 feet and offers a volume of 13,136 GT. Penned by Nauta Yacht, the yacht’s exterior is characterized by a long, sleek forward area and a series of tiers ascending to the skydeck. The interior, meanwhile, was brought to life by Christophe Leoni and showcases luxurious decor inspired by the Empire style of the early 19th century. Azzam is no slouch on the high seas, either, with a top speed of more than 30 knots. Astonishingly, the behemoth only took three years to build after one year of engineering. Azzam also underwent a refit in 2020 that likely resulted in a few more dollars being spent on her.

Lürssen: ‘Al Said’ — $600 Million

most expensive yacht rentals

Another nine-figure Lürssen megayacht on the list is Al Saïd . Delivered in 2008, the 508-footer reportedly set the Sultan of Oman roughly $600 million and, well, you can tell. Designed by Espen Øino, Al Saïd ’s exterior is reminiscent of a classic cruise liner with the twin-exhaust stacks in the center of the superstructure. Sporting a steel hull and lightweight aluminum superstructure, the yacht is capable of 25 knots flat out, with a cruising speed of 22 knots. Inside, meanwhile, the contemporary interior was penned by Redman Whiteley Dixon. Highlights include a concert hall that can hold a 50-piece orchestra.

Lürssen: ‘A+’ (Topaz) — $527 Million

Lürssen Topaz largest yachts in the world

Lürssen megayacht A+ , previously known as Topaz , reportedly cost approximately $527 million (€400 million) to come to fruition. It is the fourth-largest yacht ever built by the German shipyard and was launched back in 2012. It’s rumored that Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan, the deputy prime minister of the UAE and owner of Manchester City Football Club, took delivery of the vessel and is the current owner. A+ ’s exterior was penned by Tim Heywood Designs, while her interior was brought to life by Terence Disdale. She is equipped with cabins for 62 guests and 72 crew, as well as two helipads, a pool and a large swim platform. What more do you need?

Fincantieri: ‘Serene’ — $444 Million

A float plane flies over the super yacht Serene during take off in Ketchikan, Alaska Friday morning. Work began on the 493-foot 3-inch yacht in 2007 by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri. The ship has a crew of 52 and room for 24 guests. The seven deck vessel has landing capabilities for two helicopters and for a submarine and a sea water pool. (AP Photo/Ketchikan Daily News, Hall Anderson)

Fincantieri’s first superyacht turned out to be big in terms of both proportions and price. The 439-footer was the largest yacht ever launched in Italy when it hit the water in 2011 and cost approximately $444 million (€450 million) to complete. Designed by Espen Øino, the seven-deck vessel is characterized by a sleek blue hull, a contrasting white superstructure and a ton of racy curves. She’s brimming with amenities, too, including an enclosed winter garden for dining in any season, a tender garage large enough to house a submarine and a supersized swimming pool for soaking. She also has two helipads and a hangar to facilitate comings and goings. Although the details of Serene ’s interior remain tightly under wraps, we do know Pascale Reymond of Reymond Langton Design penned the 43,056-square-foot living quarters.

Platinum Yachts: ‘Dubai’ — $400 Million

DUBAI UAE - DEC 16: Dubai - yacht of the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum the ruler of the Emirate of Dubai. December 16 2014 in Dubai UAE

Dubai was, quite literally, built for royalty at a princely fee of roughly $400 million. The superyacht was originally commissioned by Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei as a joint project between Blohm+Voss and Lürssen. The duo only got to finish the bare hull and skeletal superstructure before construction was halted in 1998. The incomplete design was then sold to the government of Dubai and turned into a royal yacht for the country’s ruler. The 532-footer, which was finished off by Platinum Yachts, was delivered to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in 2006. Penned by Winch Design, Dubai spans seven decks and can sleep 24 guests and 88 crew. Befitting a sheikh, she is also equipped with a landing pad for a Black Hawk helicopter, a submarine garage, a disco and a cinema.

Blohm+Voss : ‘Motor Yacht A’ — $300 Million

Motor Yacht A 2008

Legend has it that architect Philippe Starck sketched the design for Motor Yacht A on a napkin in a matter of minutes. Blohm + Voss then sold the superyacht for approximately $300 million. Commissioned by Russian industrialist Andrey Melnichenko, the 390-footer is characterized by a minimalist exterior and a highly distinctive pelican bow that cuts a striking silhouette. With a beam of 62 feet, the vessel offers a generous interior volume of 5,500 GT. She offers accommodation for 14 guests and 42 crew. She also has no less than three swimming pools, one of which has a glass bottom that creates a wow factor on the deck below. Melnichenko kept  Motor Yacht A for nearly a decade before replacing it with Nobiskrug’s Sailing Yacht A . The 468-footer is not only the largest sailing yacht in the world, but also the most expensive with an estimated value of $578 million .

Lürssen: ‘Radiant’ — $300 Million

most expensive yacht rentals

The tale behind Radiant ’s price tag is almost as long as the 360-footer itself. Rumor has it, the superyacht was built for Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky at a cost of roughly $149 million (€148.5 million). After Berezovsky ran into financial difficulties, he asked Edmiston to list the vessel for $352 million (€350 million) and it eventually sold for a hair under that. Delivered in 2010, Radiant sports a steel hull, an aluminum superstructure and gorgeous teak decking. She can comfortably accommodate up to 20 guests in 10 suites, as well as up to 44 crew. Her top-tier amenities include a movie theatre, a beauty salon, a beach club, a gym, a pool, a Jacuzzi, a helipad and a fully stocked tender garage. Certainly sounds worthy of $300 million to us.

Lürssen: ‘Pelorus’ — $300 Million

most expensive yacht rentals

In the late ‘90s, Saudi Arabian businessman Abdulmohsen Abdulmalik Al-Sheikh commissioned Lürssen to create Pelorus . The 377-footer hit the seas in 2003 and was the 11th-largest yacht in the world at the time. During her maiden voyage, Pelorus was sold to Roman Abramovich. The Russian entrepreneur had it altered by Blohm & Voss, adding a second helipad and other lavish amenities. Fast forward to 2009, Irina Abramovich received the yacht as part of her divorce settlement from Roman. She sold it to David Geffen in 2011 via broker Merle Wood for $300 million. Pelorus features a sleek exterior designed by Tim Heywood and a beachy chic interior penned by Terence Disdale. She has several terraces with doors that open out to the sea to create a true indoor/outdoor feel.

Peters Werft: ‘Al Mirqab’ — $300 Million

most expensive yacht rentals

The 436-foot Al Mirqab is one of the largest yachts in the world and has a price tag to match. Launched in 2008, the $300 million vessel was built for Qatar’s former prime minister under the supervision of Kusch Yachts in the Peters Werft shipyard in Germany. Penned by Tim Heywood, the elegant exterior pairs a long, navy-blue hull with a contrasting white superstructure. The interior, meanwhile, was brought to life by Andrew Winch and has won several awards. Arguably, the most striking feature is the Arabic-influenced motifs on the marble floors. Another highlight is the swimming pool on the lower deck, which can be opened up to the sea via side hatches in the hull. Al Mirqab has staterooms for 36, and crew quarters for 45. She was also treated to a refit in 2014 and thus looks fresher than your average 14-year-old vessel.

Abeking & Rasmussen: ‘Aviva’ — $250 Million

most expensive yacht rentals

Abeking & Rasmussen’s Aviva shows what kind of lavish amenities you can get with $250 million. The 323-footer, which was delivered in 2017, features the largest gym on any yacht. It’s so big, in fact, that it houses a full-size paddle tennis court that pulls double duty as a soccer field when the nets are down. Penned by Toby Silverton and Reymond Langton Design, Aviva pairs a curvacious blue exterior with a chic modern interior. She is equipped with a hybrid propulsion system that enables her to reach up to 11 knots using only electric motors or 20 knots with the addition of diesel power. The yacht is reportedly the sequel to another smaller Aviva that was delivered to British billionaire Joe Lewis in 2007. The yacht was launched just 33 months after the signing of the contract, which is quite an impressive feat given the complexity and scope of the project.

Lürssen: ‘Octopus’ — $200 Million

Octopus Superyacht Exterior

Launched in 2003 at a cost of approximately $200 million, Octopus was built by Lürssen for late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. The 414-footer is regularly loaned out for expeditions and scientific research initiatives. A true explorer, it features a dive center with a hyperbaric chamber, a yellow submarine named Pagoo and a remotely operated vehicle that can dive thousands of feet below the surface. Of course, this is complemented by state-of-the-art research technology. In addition, Octopus features two helipads, a hangar and seven tenders to facilitate comings and goings. She is also equipped with 13 staterooms, several bars, a recording studio, a cinema, a spa, a gym, a library and a basketball court. (You might remember Allen once owned the Portland Trail Blazers.) What’s more, Octopus appears to be climbing in price as time goes on. In 2019, the vessel was listed for sale for a cool $325 million .

Lürssen: ‘Rising Sun’ — $200 Million

Lürssen Rising Sun superyacht

Rising Sun was designed by one of the brightest minds in the industry: the late, legendary Jon Bannenberg. In fact, it was the last yacht the Australian designer penned before he died in 2002. The $200 million vessel was built by Lürssen and delivered to Oracle CEO Larry Ellison two years later in 2004. The 138-footer is characterized by large expanses of glass that let in plenty of the sun’s rays. In addition, it offers 86,000 square feet of living space brought to life by Seccombe Design. There are nine cabins for up to 18 guests and generous crew quarters for up to 46 crew. Elsewhere, you’ll find a gym, a cinema, a wine cellar and a basketball court. As for grunt, Rising Sun promises a maximum speed of 28 knots and a cruising speed of 26 knots. She was last refitted in 2011 and is currently owned by billionaire David Geffen.

Lürssen: ‘Solandge’ — $150 Million

Lürssen’s Solandge

Lürssen’s Solandge is rumored to have cost $150 million to come to fruition, and you can tell. Delivered in 2013, the 279-footer is replete with the finest materials. The floor, for example, sports no less than 50 types of exotic wood. There are also around 50 samples of natural stone in the bathrooms. Designed by Espen Øino, Solandge has a sleek exterior with elegant, clean lines. Aileen Rodriguez’s interior, meanwhile, is full to the brim with extravagant amenities. The spa comprises multiple pools on different decks, along with a hammam and a sauna. In addition, the yacht features a beauty salon is equipped with a sink and crane that together creates “snow” à la a snow room, as well as a gym and a massage room. As Lürssen puts it, Solandge was built with pure yachting pleasure in mind.

The World’s Most Luxurious Yacht Rentals

Want to splash out on your next holiday? Consider renting one of the world’s most luxurious yachts for charter — a popular option preferred by A-list celebrities and the world’s 1%.

What is a yacht charter?

Luxury yacht rentals — also known as yacht charters — are among the most lavish travel experiences money can buy. Serving as a floating holiday home, charter guests on board a superyacht get their own uber-private five-star space for enjoying a decadent vacation with family and friends at sea.

They can also expect to be waited on by a crew of staff including a private chef, massage therapists, personal trainers or water sports instructors, and will be able to make full use of facilities which might include a gym, swimming pool or garage-filled with water toys like Jet Skis, wakeboards and scuba diving gear.

Want to explore the best of what the sea has to offer? Read on to discover how to charter a luxury yacht and which are the most luxurious vessels for rent from today’s superyacht charter fleet.

How to rent a yacht?

If you want to charter a private yacht, visit the website of a trusted brokerage house. Brokers will be able to advise which vessel from their fleet works best for the trip you have in mind and the budget you are willing to spend.

Remember, the charter fleet is vast with just as many smaller options as mega yachts for big spenders. But if you want to sample the best of the best, take a look at the most luxurious vessels on the charter market now.

Come Sail Away

There's a certain amount of luxury associated with owning a boat, even if it's a mere speedboat or sailboat for weekend recreation . But over-the-top vessels called "superyachts" take boating to another level of extravagance (and more than one on this list even has a defense system). Here's a look at some of the world's most expensive yachts, including Jeff Bezos' superyacht, which was recently towed away in the dead of the night, possibly to escape angry Dutch residents.

Jeff Bezos

Jeff Bezos' Superyacht

Estimated price:  More than $500 million

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is one of the richest people in the world, so it makes sense he'd want one of the most expensive yachts in the world. Commissioned in 2018, the reportedly $500 million-plus vessel called Y271 was built in the Netherlands by Dutch company Oceanco. It is a whopping 417 feet long , according to Architectural Digest, making it the world's biggest sailing yacht. In true mega-billionaire fashion, Bezos asked the Dutch city of Rotterdam to dismantle  a section of its historic Koningshavenbrug Bridge in order for the yacht to pass through, but the answer was a resounding no after an outcry. The drama continued as Bezos recently had the vessel towed away  in the dead of the night to a further shipping yard, presumably when angry Dutch residents wouldn't be out to throw eggs at the monstrosity. Amazingly, this monster of the seas won't accommodate a helipad, so Bezos has commissioned a backup yacht to allow his girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez, a helicopter pilot, a place to land her bird. Fun fact: The cost of the yacht is about twice what Bezos paid to buy The Washington Post in 2013. Alas, pictures of the secretive project are hard to come by so far.

Pelorus

Estimated price: $300 million

Pelorus has changed hands a few times, passing through those of megayacht owners Roman Abramovich and David Geffen, who upgraded to even bigger boats on this list. The latest owner is property magnate Samuel Tak Lee. He (or, we assume, someone he hires) captains the 377-foot yacht via joystick .

Pelorus Interior

Pelorus: Interior

Pelorus' interior feels like an " informal beach house ." Terence Disdale designed the wood paneling to look natural and distressed, even though it was manufactured specifically for Pelorus. It can accommodate a total of 22 guests in 11 cabins, including the master and two VIP rooms, plus 41 crew to serve them.

Pelorus Amenities

Pelorus: Amenities

The top deck has two pools, and the sea-level transom opens onto a platform from which to launch water toys or just lounge by the ocean. It was Abramovich who added the second helipad , for the billionaire who needs room for more than one helicopter. Pelorus also features stabilization systems at sea and at anchor, for smooth sailing that is common for most of the yachts on this list. Many yachts have movie theaters, but the one onboard Pelorus includes beds.

Radiant

Emirati businessman Abdulla Al Futtaim bought Radiant from Russian media billionaire Boris Berezovsky. It's easy to see how this 361-foot superyacht, reportedly worth $300 million  and originally named Darius, earned the name Radiant when you see it lit up at night.

Radiant Interior

Radiant: Interior

Al Futtaim has kept photographers out of Radiant's cabins, but we know it can host 20 guests in 10 cabins, plus 44 crew. The decks are made of teak, and designer Tim Heywood used a large beam to leave the interior wide open. It also has an extremely powerful water canon  to defend itself against attacks.

Costco cafe pizza

Radiant: Amenities

When Berezovsky was designing Radiant, he included an "escape launch," a turbo-charged twin diesel speed boat that can shoot him out of the yacht at 75 knots . You've got to wonder who he thought he needed to escape from, but we're sure Al Futtaim can sleep easier on the sea knowing it's there. There's also a helipad  to allow guests and VIPs to easily come and go from the yacht, along with a cinema, a gymnasium, a swimming platform, swimming pools, a beach club, and massage rooms.

Motor Yacht A

Motor Yacht A

Estimated price: $323 million

Russian fertilizer and coal magnate Andrey Melnichenko owns this 390-foot yacht. It may look like a submarine, but it doesn't submerge. This motor yacht (not to be confused with Melnichenko's sailing yacht ) includes bomb-proof glass, which is apparently the sort of thing billionaires need to think about. At least it served him well until he listed it for sale in 2016 , although there didn't seem to be any takers — Melnichenko still owns it.

Motor Yacht A Interior

Motor Yacht A: Interior

Designer Philippe Starck wanted to create a wide open space, so the main deck of Motor Yacht A is a single saloon across the length of the interior — that's what's under that long submarine nose. The opulent interior includes Baccarat-crystal tables and polished silver . There are almost 24,000 square feet of interior space (making it many times larger than most American homes), and in the master suite there's a secret "nookie room" hidden behind mirrors. The yacht is big enough to accommodate 14 guests in the owner's suite and six guest suites. The chairs on the yacht are made from alligator hides and the walls are covered in hand-stitched calf's leather.

Motor Yacht A Amenities

Motor Yacht A: Amenities

The A's three swimming pools manufacture currents for swimming upstream, like an underwater treadmill. One of those pools has a glass floor so you can look up at swimmers from the deck below. Starck's favorite spot is reportedly the tender garage , the place on a yacht that houses smaller boats and other billionaire toys. On Motor Yacht A, these get their own luxurious cabins, just like the human guests.

Dubai

Estimated price: $350 million

Previously named Platinum, Panhandle, and Golden Star, this 532-foot yacht valued at $350 million  was built for Brunei Prince Jefri Bolkiah. Now called Dubai, it belongs to  Sheikh Mohammed Rashid Al Maktoum of the United Arab Emirates.

Dubai Interior

Dubai: Interior

Make your way up and down Dubai's seven decks — one of them with an air-conditioned enclosure, perfect for the Gulf's hot climate — on the yacht's magnificent circular staircase , where the glass changes color as you step. You've heard of a red carpet? Here, glamorous guests can sit on gigantic, circular red sofas. The yacht's social spaces feature a variety of salons, and there are 50 guest suites. The VIP portion of the ship, meanwhile (in case you didn't already view the entire, lavish yacht as a VIP experience), is a sprawling apartment divided into three suites and a home theater.

Dubai Amenities

Dubai: Amenities

Most yachts have swimming pools, but what other yacht turns the swimming pool into a work of art ? Al Maktoum's guests can open their eyes underwater to see the pool's beautiful handmade mosaics, which were designed to be reminiscent of the marine life in the Persian Gulf. Other parts of Dubai also feature a mix of tile materials — gold leaf, marble, onyx, lazuli, and malachite — to create a work of art everywhere you walk. And like every self-respecting yacht owner, the sheikh has a helicopter station on board , which can which can accommodate a Sikorsky S76 or any other helicopter up to 9.5 tons.

Yacht A+

Estimated price: $450 million

Formerly known as Topaz, the $450 million A+ certainly makes the grade at 482 feet long and eight decks tall. While it's owned by Sheikh Mansour Al Nahyan of the UAE (half-brother of ruler Abu Dhabi Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan), the flag flown by A+ represents the Cayman Islands .

Yacht A+ Interior

Yacht A+: Interior

While few details about the yacht have been made public, it is known that A+ can accommodate up to 62 guests between 26 cabins with further capacity for 79 crew members spread amid 35 additional cabins. During its Topaz days in 2014, Leonardo DiCaprio  hosted an '80s-themed party on the yacht that included the likes of Jamie Foxx and Orlando Bloom. With friends like these, who needs their own yacht?

For entertainment, the emphasis seems to be on relaxation with an outdoor bar and sunbathing space  dominating the decks. Additional highlights include a cinema, study, sauna, spa, Turkish-style bath, gym, library, and observation lounge. And like any yacht worthy of a sheikh, Yacht A+ also has a helipad.

Serene

Estimated price: $458 million

The Stoli vodka empire afforded Yuri Shefler this yacht, but he sold it to then-deputy Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman in 2015 for 350 million euros or $458 million after only a few years of sailing. You can see all 440 feet of Serene glowing neon turquoise  in the pitch-black sea at night.

Serene Interior

Serene: Interior

Serene has six decks and more than twice as many crew members to serve them. Guests can dine well onboard Serene thanks to a wood-fired pizza oven and Teppanyaki grill. Each area is a circular design by Reymond Langton, incorporating pure white, wood, and leather, and the occasional chandelier. The formal dining area, a room flanked by floor-to-ceiling windows, features two tables accommodating up to 12 people each.

Serene: Amenities

Amenities abound on this yacht, which rivals a 5-star hotel. They include seven pools, one of which is a salt-water swimming pool, a supersized hot tub, sauna, and helipad. There's also a sky lounge that offers views from every angle, an indoor climbing wall, and an underwater observation lounge. Bill Gates once paid $5 million per week to enjoy all this fabulousness.

Rising Sun

Estimated price: $590 million

When you create Geffen Records and co-create Dreamworks, you can have a $590 million yacht  like David Geffen. But the Rising Sun didn't get to dock at Cannes until Geffen bought it from Oracle CEO Larry Ellison. Nor did it host Oprah  before Geffen was there to invite her yachting.

Forty-five crew members vastly outnumber the potential 16 guests. The living space on this yacht totals more than 8,000 square meters, which is spread over five levels. There's also 3,300 square meters of deck space covered in teak. Additional luxe touches include countertops made from onyx, a full gym (because we all know celebrities absolutely must stay in shape), and a massive wine cellar.

Rising Sun Amenities

Rising Sun: Amenities

Naturally there's a movie theater aboard the Rising Sun, given Geffen's marquee spot in the industry. The theater features an enormous plasma screen, but of course. There's also a basketball court, sauna, and spa. And before you even ask, yes, there's a helipad. Yawn.

Somnio Superyacht

Estimated price:  $600 million

This 728-foot "yacht liner," the world's first, is slated to sail beginning in 2024 . It will feature 39 luxury apartments that will be available via invitation only, and owners' identities will remain secret. Plans call for its apartments to have "bespoke features" that will be tailored to the whims of each buyer.

Somnio Superyacht

Somnio: Amenities

Amenities are expected to include a 10,000-bottle wine cellar , a gym and library, an onboard beach club, several restaurants and bars, and "seven-star service" that will include full concierge and medical services.

Azzam

Estimated price: $605 million

Azzam is owned and was commissioned  by Abu Dhabi Emir Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates. A 590-foot yacht, Azzam cost about $605 million to make  and is said to be environmentally friendly, featuring decreased carbon dioxide, noise, and soot emissions. (Thank goodness the world's billionaires are thinking about the environment.)

Azzam Interior

Azzam: Interior

Al Nahyan keeps the interior of his yacht private — there have been no known photographs made public. But we know it features six decks, a 95-foot main salon, and enough room for 60 crew members in 30 cabins. There are also said to be 18 staterooms that can accommodate up to 36 guests. The interior style, designed by Christophe Leoni, is described as a relaxed French Empire style . And it's rumored that Azzam has a bulletproof master cabin , as you do.

Azzam Amenities

Azzam: Amenities

Some of the more unique features of Azzam include a submarine and a missile defense system (because what world leader doesn't need these things?) There's also a water desalination drinking-water system that runs on waste heat from the engine .

Eclipse

Estimated price: $700 million

Chelsea Football Club owner and Russian-Israeli billionaire Roman Abramovich owns this modest $700 million yacht . Created by legendary ship builders Blohm + Voss, the Eclipse took five years to complete, a timeline that included design, development, and testing. As any good superyacht would, the finished product included a missile defense system and "laser shield" that Abramovich uses to thwart prying paparazzi .

Eclipse Interior

Eclipse: Interior

Terence Disdale designed the interior  with teak and silver — actual silver — rubbed into the grain of the black wood walls. There are 18 cabins, which can sleep as many as 36 guests. Eclipse also accommodates a mind-boggling 70 crew members.

Eclipse Amenities

Eclipse: Amenities

Notable perks  on this superyacht include two swimming pools, several hot tubs, a disco hall, a 56-meter owner's deck, two helipads, and three (yes, three) helicopters. Just in case all of that extravagance isn't enough, there's also a three-man submarine, because no self-respecting billionaire can ever have too many pricey toys.

Megayacht Scheherazade

Scheherazade

This 459-foot superyacht is impressive, but what really has people buzzing is the mystery about who actually owns it. While Russian oil tycoon Eduard Khudainatov is said to be the owner (and he isn't currently under sanctions), the U.S. believes the real owner is Russian president Vladimir Putin.

Scheherazade

Scheherazade: Interior

While the custom build hasn't been made available for public viewing, some details have been released by the shipyard or spotted by yacht watchers. Allegedly the ship has gold fixtures in all bathrooms  and a tiled dance floor that, when a button is pushed, lowers to become a pool. There's also a movie theater and a lounge with the biggest TV ever on a yacht — a whopping 14.7 feet across. An aquarium, a mobile hospital unit, a judo studio, a gym, a formal ballroom, and a spa with Turkish, Roman, and cold baths are available to enjoy, along with a large pool. There's also an elevator  for access between floors.

Scheherazade: Exterior

While the six-level yacht has limited outdoor space (ostensibly for security reasons), it is well set up for a quick escape. There are two helipads (one at the bow and the other at the stern), one of which opens up to lower a helicopter into a hangar. The vessel is equipped with five tenders, six jet skis, and eight seabobs. There's also a drone-crashing system  in case anyone unwanted gets too close.

The owner of Admiral X Force will have an entire level to themselves, which will include a master suite, a living room, dressing rooms, bathrooms, a private dining room, a sun deck, a spa, and a heliport (because your heliport can never be too close, after all). On X Force's second level, there will be a main hall decorated with a fireplace, fountains, a chandelier, and a staircase finished with crystal balustrades. Designed by Gianmarco Campanimo , it's meant to be a futuristic interpretation of classic luxury. Additional design elements include marble floors and gold and silver sculptures.

Admiral X Force: Amenities

There's a plan for a two-level beach club on the Admiral X that includes such features as an indoor spa, a gym, a bar, a Jacuzzi, and swimming pools. Additional amenities include yet another helipad, as well as two cinemas.

One of the latest additions to the superyacht club, the Thor Explore  concept was created by Gresham Yacht Design and measures 328-feet long. Yet another vessel that bills itself as futuristic (are you sensing an emerging theme here among superyachts?), the sleek Thor Explore will come complete with a mission control center where owners can map out their adventures exploring the globe.

Thor Explore interior

Thor Explore: Interior

Interior design highlights on Thor Explore include expansive nautilus windows , a floor-to-ceiling aquarium, and, on the main deck, an enormous saloon featuring a glass floor. As if the glass floor isn't striking enough, it can turn opaque at the flick of a switch, in case privacy is suddenly required. There's also a sunken seating area created to look like it floats between decks. The yacht can be designed to accommodate as many 36 guests.

Thor Explore amenities

Thor Explore: Amenities

Of course, there's an onboard beach club. That's practically a given on superyachts. But to reach the beach club, passengers must walk along a circular corridor where there's a cylindrical aquarium. Cool, right? There are also fold-down balconies, a helideck, and a hangar for storing a submarine, speedboat, and more.

PETER DUNCAN AND RELATIVE OBSCURITY WIN THE 2021 J/70 WORLDS

Peter Duncan and Relative Obscurity Return to the Podium as J/70 World Champion at California Yacht Club

Peter Duncan’s Relative Obscurity has prevailed over 60 other teams and challenging wind conditions to capture the 2021 J/70 World Championship title at California Yacht Club, today. In a five-day series that tested the skill and patience of top-notch competitors from 11 nations, Duncan – sailing with Willem van Waay, Morgan Trubovich and Victor Diaz de Leon – secured a top five position in the beginning of the regatta and never let go.

“I’m elated!” said Duncan as he returned to the dock, bustling with activity. “That was a tough day out there. We didn’t start very well but had a bit of a break with a header on the first run of the second race that let us get close to everybody and sail through some folks we need to sail through,” he explained. “We have a lot of fun onboard – joke and laugh and keep it light – and that worked in our favor when we had to grind through. Everybody knows what their job is, and these guys do them exceptionally well.”

“It was very cool that there were four boats who could have won this thing in the last race...”

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.

‘Nothing left’: After California Yacht Club fire, residents mourn loss of a beloved spot

Two firefighters injured fighting a massive overnight fire that destroyed

In an instant, an overnight seaside blaze engulfed decades’ worth of boating trophies, historical artifacts and cherished memorabilia at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey on Monday.

Fire crews attempted to control the blaze as heavy smoke and flames consumed the two-story building. By the time they had subdued the fire two hours later, only the skeletal remnants of the clubhouse were left standing.

John Myers, senior vice president of the club, said the blaze had been reported by an employee working late in the clubhouse Monday night. The fire spared the remainder of the facilities on the ground, including the docks and the yachts moored there. But the clubhouse, and particularly its second floor, was all but wiped out.

“We are working closely with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in their investigation of the cause of the incident and will share those findings when they become available to us,” Myers said.

The three towers that make up the Marina City Club

Members are left mourning, comparing the loss to the death of a loved one.

Jennifer Dakoske Koslu awoke in Rancho Mirage at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, before the sun had risen, to find her phone inundated with text messages from club members.

The first message she read simply stated, “The CYC is gone.”

“As soon as I opened my phone, it went to a link on the Citizen app and saw a video of the club burning. I was shocked,” Dakoske Koslu said.

For the last 24 years, Dakoske Koslu and her family have been dedicated members of the CYC, whose clubhouse is a few miles away from their home in Playa del Rey. She said it is where her children have grown up, familiarizing themselves with every inch.

“I remember taking my son there on the Fourth of July when he was just 3 weeks old. It was the first place we went with him as a newborn,” Dakoske Koslu said.

She and her husband biked to the club in the aftermath of the fire, greeted by the charred remains of the building on Wednesday afternoon.

“The destruction is unbelievable. It’s clear that the fire was burning intensely on the second floor,” Dakoske Koslu said. “There’s nothing left.”

The second floor once housed a collection of the club’s prestigious racing trophies, kept on display for members and visitors. The fire melted all but a single salvageable California Cup. Most notably, the priceless King of Spain Trophy, acquired in 1929 from King Alfonso XIII, was lost.

Additionally, the club lost cherished photographs of every past commodore, a significant position within a yacht club. Members said they didn’t know if anyone had digitized the images of the commodores or of the club’s founders.

“We would tell yachting stories at the bar around lots of memorabilia, and the yachting artifacts behind the bar are all gone now,” Tom Materna said. “The yacht club provided us a facility for the off-the-water celebrations after hard-fought competition on the water.”

Boats on the water with palm trees in the background

The CYC dates to the early 1920s, started by boat owners from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and other yacht clubs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the first clubhouse in 1922, designed by famed architect Edwin Bergstrom, co-designer of the Pentagon.

In 1965, the yacht club submitted a proposal for an all-encompassing $1-million, two-story, 10,000-square-foot clubhouse on four acres off Admiralty Way. Members envisioned a state-of-the-art facility with 170 boat slips, a guest dock, a small boat hoist and a dry land storage facility for boats. The clubhouse that resulted was dedicated on June 10, 1967.

Then-Commodore William A. DeGroot Jr. told The Times that the triangular parcel of land on which the clubhouse still sits is a “perfectly logical place for a club facility, and a commanding view down the main channel of the marina.”

Though the building has historical significance to its members, it does not have a historic designation, according to Linda Dishman, president of the Los Angeles Conservancy.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and our members,” Myers said. “CYC has been a beacon for the nautical community for the past 101 years.”

Materna, 68, first found out about the fire through Facebook as friends posted videos and photos of the damage Tuesday morning. Then he began receiving calls and text messages from friends.

“Everybody woke up in the morning and realized we’d lost a significant part of the sailing community,” Materna said.

His connection to the club dates back nearly 52 years, to when he was just 16 years old. After spending 30 years sailing professionally with Hobie Cats, mainly racing catamarans — a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size — he recently served as a crew member on other club members’ racing yachts.

The CYC is pivotal in the boat racing community, organizing and hosting events such as the Optimist National Championship and Junior Olympic trials, Materna said. He fondly remembers the hundreds of people from across the globe converging on the marina for similar events.

The main topic among members now is what’s next for the club. Dakoske Koslu noted that the club’s ownership changed over the last few years, and many are unsure and concerned about the club’s continuation after the fire.

The club relocated to the marina in 1967, leasing the land it sits on from the county.

“I don’t think the county has really valued the contributions of the California Yacht Club as an important part of the Marina. They value Trader Joe’s because it’s more money for them,” Dakoske Koslu said.

Dakoske Koslu said she’s seen numerous small marine-oriented businesses displaced from the marina, making way for more commercialized developments such as Trader Joe’s and Recreational Equipment Inc.
