5 Minutes With ... John Hunt, CEO, Wally Yachts

Sophie doran | july 20, 2011.

John Hunt, Chairman and CEO of Wally Yachts, tells us that one of his major roles is to keep an inherently innovative organisation focused on today

There is much more to John Hunt than his role as Chairman and CEO of Wally Yachts . The serially successful entrepreneur and venture investor has created and co-created companies, with interests as diverse as digital communications, wine production, e-commerce software, espresso bars and luxury resorts.

Starbucks acquired the UK espresso bar he co-founded, Seattle Coffee Company, in 1998 as their European launch platform. Shortly after the web agency he founded, Syzygy, went public in Germany at €200 million. His holding company, Archimedia , launched in January 2010, was a founding investor in online ventures Betfair and Made.com and in November of the launch year, committed a significant investment to the growth and development of Wally.

A brand born from dissatisfaction with the market, Wally was founded in 1994 when Luca Bassani Antivari was unable to find a yacht that fulfilled his requirements. After designing and custom building a vessel that combined the ability to sail solo with outstanding luxury and safety, he was quickly inundated with requests from others wanting similar yachts. The brand has gone on to build over 50 yachts since its inception, managing a collaboration with Hermès along the way.

With Mr Hunt now at the helm as Chairman and CEO, Wally will be launching a series of new models and focusing on markets outside core demand in the Mediterranean. We are delighted to present our conversation with the serial entrepreneur and venture capitalist as the fifth in our series of 5 Minutes With…

In your time with Wally, what has been your favourite memory?

At the Nespresso Cup in Portofino this year I realised that the way Wally makes a boat smarter and simpler to operate meant that people who did not come from a sailing background could quickly learn to compete with the world’s best. Watching some of the Wally owners who are relatively new to racing get a huge thrill out of winning major races has been a real highlight for me.

Which market are you currently experiencing the strongest growth?

By geography, we are seeing strong interest outside of our traditional Mediterranean market, as far away as Australia. Certain economies are booming and people are investing in quality of life. By product sector, we are seeing the strongest growth in Wally sailboats, because they offer a unique combination of benefits – indulgent cruising plus exciting racing in the world’s premier fleet of ‘Maxi’ sailing yachts.

What is the next major launch you can tell us more about?

2011 is a landmark year for Wally as we will launch three important new product concepts:

The first is a new high-performance, racer-cruiser series called Wally//Cento. The Cento fleet was catalysed by the demands of two very experienced sailors, Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones and Charles Dunstone, who wanted super fast 100 foot yachts which can surf and plane and achieve speeds in excess of 25 knots downwind, yet can also provide bright, luxurious and comfortable cruising accommodation.

The second is a new long-distance motor yacht called Wally//Ace, which provides incredibly spacious and fuel-efficient ‘loft living on the sea’. These yachts can take 8-10 guests and 4 crew from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean on board a 26-metre yacht that rivals a traditional 45 metre for living space and deck space and our first owners are young and stylish people who are great ambassadors for this increasingly popular ‘slower and smarter’ style of motorboat.

The third launch is still a closely guarded secret which we will launch this summer in St Tropez and which we confidently expect to become the best selling Wally ever. I can’t say much about it now except that it will lower the Wally ‘entry price’ to a little over 500,000 Euros as part of our overall focus on ‘smarter’ boats.

What is the biggest challenge the brand will face in the coming years…

Our challenge now is to keep up with the growth opportunities and I like to quote Steve Jobs who says that one of his major roles at Apple was to say ‘no’ – i.e. to keep an inherently innovative organisation focused on today.

What one word best describes your strategy?

If I had three more words, then I would say innovation, quality and performance – strategic obsessions that have always driven Wally.

What is the next opportunity you would like your company to seize?

Wally is already widely seen as the de facto leader and innovator on the product side of the industry but we are looking now at the total experience of boat ownership and some opportunities where our innovative thinking and quality obsession can be manifested in making life simpler and more enjoyable for customers.

If you could change any aspect of the luxury industry what would it be?

I am not trying to change the luxury industry per se but I might define sub-sectors of ‘luxury’ more specifically and make a distinction between beautifully crafted ‘everyday’ objects such as shoes and watches and the more exceptional indulgences, which are authentic, experiential and rare such as a Wally!

Wally’s WHY200 Impresses Inside and Out

  • By Phil Draper
  • March 21, 2022

Wally WHY200

Why WHY200? The acronym stands for Wally Hybrid Yachts, which has nothing to do with hybrid propulsion, but rather a hull designed for a range of displacement and semidisplacement cruising speeds. And the numerals don’t reference length. They reflect the approximate volume (199 gross tons), which is a lot for a yacht with a length overall of just 89 feet.

But length is not what matters these days. Gross tonnage and beam—the feeling of space—are the important metrics. And on this yacht, that most important effect is achieved.

In all, there’s more than 2,150 square feet of indoor living space, including 1,075 square feet on the main-deck level. Wally says the yacht delivers 50 percent more volume, 60 percent more main-deck area and 40 percent more upper-deck area than any conventional planing yacht of the same length. All of that’s achieved without the speed concessions normally associated with displacement yachts.

Exterior design and styling make the Wally heritage clear, albeit on steroids. The top of the superstructure is virtually all tinted glass. There is extensive hull glazing set into the yacht’s metallic-silver topsides. The top tier effectively wraps around that tall reverse-raked stem, and it’s not just an exterior styling exercise (keep reading).

Wally WHY200

The transom area is a cross between a beach club and a sailing-yacht cockpit, which is not surprising given the 40 or so supersailers Wally has launched in the past 25-plus years. The swim platform and fold-down quarter-cheeks double as doors for two longitudinal garages. They can also create a walk-around stern.

The aft deck is configured more like a sailing yacht, with a wide central walkway flanked by sun pads and bench sofas, making for a more sociable vibe than a traditional transom sofa that spans the beam. There’s room for a cockpit table, and much of the aft deck is semi-enclosed by windowed buttresses to the sides and a substantial upper-deck overhang, all of which make for a much more intimate space.

Electrically opening glass doors lead to a full-beam main salon. This model has a maximum beam of 25 feet, and at its widest, the salon measures virtually 23 feet from picture window to picture window. A glass-walled structural staircase dominates the space and helps to create zones, all with decorative carbon fiber. The soles throughout the shared spaces are mostly 5-inch-wide teak planks, and the wall paneling is an off-white Alcantara—minimalist, chic and classic Wally. The first hull has a galley to port that Wally refers to as a “show kitchen,” and there’s a day head in the after corner to starboard.

The door to this model’s star attraction, the 398-square-foot master stateroom, is forward in the salon. What makes this space uber-special is bow glazing that allows a proper view. The WHY200 is the first production yacht with this feature. It’s 950 square inches, which is nearly the size of a 50-inch TV screen. I walked from there into the stateroom, which has a 200-degree wraparound panorama across an island berth with 6-foot-11-inch headroom. The feeling is impressive.

Wally WHY200

Other layout options allow for one big head and no island berth, or an entertainment space with a bar and circular dining table. The space is all the more dramatic for being ultra-quiet, principally because the engines are so far aft.

Belowdecks aboard Hull No. 1 are three en suite guest staterooms off a central fore-aft passage, all with inboard-facing athwartships berths. The biggest stateroom is in the bow, with a king-size berth to port and his-and-hers heads forward with a shared shower stall between them, plus a sofa. The other two staterooms are amidships and have queens.

There’s also a four-stateroom version available. It trades the forward VIP stateroom for two en suite, twin-berth staterooms with top-and-tail berths.

The amidships crew space spans 344 square feet. There are three cabins for six crewmembers, although the usual complement is likely to be four or five. There also are two shower rooms, a galley and a mess area. Access is via a staircase with two discreet doors to port, one from the forward corner of the aft deck and the other from the after corner of the salon.

The upper deck has a sky lounge with wraparound sofas. It’s a light and bright space, not least for having glazing on five sides of the cube. Not only are there glass doors to the terrace, picture windows to the sides and a glass wall separating the bridge, but there also are skylights above. All that glass means superb views from the helm for normal navigation.

The bridge console is addressed by three seats that are carbon-backed—one for the pilot and the others for guests. Doors on each side connect with partial side decks and the raised foredeck.

Wally WHY200

The amount of space aboard owes everything to the quad Volvo Penta IPS diesel installation beneath the aft deck. There are two options: four D13-900 IPS1200s or D13-1000 IPS1350s. At one-third load, they deliver maximum speeds of 20 knots or 23 knots, respectively, and brisk cruises of 16 or 19 knots. Above that load state, expect speeds to decrease by around a half-knot for every extra ton.

Similarly, ranges vary from 410 nautical miles at 17 knots for the smaller engines to 350 nm at 20 knots for the bigger package. At 10 knots, both setups should stretch to give or take 1,100 nm on four engines. And there’s always the option to run on just two engines, as IPS installations are always more efficient at higher revs.

Tank capacity is 3,170 gallons. Stabilization on the first hull includes fins and gyros. Given that most owners are likely to spend more time at anchor than underway, the extra investment in onboard comfort is never going to be wasted. The two Seakeeper 16s and Humphree electric fins were all active during our runs, and the yacht was rock-steady throughout, hardly heeling even through hard-over turns. Moreover, that high bow rises little more than 2.5 degrees throughout the speed range, which makes moving around while underway so much easier.

Wally has always pushed the boundaries of boatbuilding. With the WHY200, the builder has introduced a forward-thinking exterior design with superyacht space, surprising sea views and admirable performance. Once I was aboard, it didn’t take long for this yacht’s “why” to become a “wow.”

Anchor Access

The ground tackle is all in a compartment beneath the owner’s stateroom, accessible via a crawl space from the VIP closet.

A Yacht is Born

Chief designer and Wally founder Luca Bassani gave creative inputs for this model, working with the Ferretti Group’s central design and engineering team. Laurent Giles in England handled the naval architecture, and the yacht was tank-tested at Solent University’s facilities in Southampton. The minimalist interior scheme comes from Andrea Vallicelli’s studio in Rome. The WHY200 is built at the Ferretti Group’s Mondolfo, Italy, plant.

Semidisplacement hulls make a lot of sense. “You get a much more comfortable ride when you are able to punch through waves at 16, 18, 20 knots,” Bassani says, “but then you have to design accordingly to cope with those waves. …One way of doing that is [to] raise the bow sufficiently, and we’ve used that logic to create a whole new space aboard.”

Toy Stowage

The yacht has two stern garages, each capable of accommodating a 13.5-foot tender or a PWC/Seabob/paddleboard combo.

Wally yachts unveil new sailing designs from 110-to-150 feet.

The first wallywind 110 is already under construction.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that Luca Bassani created an entirely new design aesthetic when he founded Wally Yachts back in the 1990’s. They were sailing yachts. They were innovative. And they were…sexy.

But Bassani is also known for his iconic power yachts. In fact, the most recent Wallys— Wallypower 58 , WHY200 , Wallytender 43 —have all been motor yachts. But now that first renderings of the brand’s wallywind range have been released, I’m happy to report the Wally team have not forgotten their roots.

The interior of the wallywind 110.

In fact, they’ve developed three new sailing boat models that range from 110-to-150 feet long. The first to be launched will be the wallywind 110 that boasts a full carbon hull and features naval architecture by judel/vrolijk & co .

“The wallywind110 is the equivalent of the grand touring car in the automotive world,” says Wally Managing Director Stefano de Vivo. “It is a very powerful yet smooth long-distance cruising machine – but one that could become a serious challenger in a race - if you felt so inclined. The boat is ideal for an experienced sailor, maybe someone who has had boats in the 60-80ft range and is now willing to make the jump to the 100ft size range to get the extra comforts.”

the trademark clean deck of the wallywind110

Founder and Chief Designer Luca Bassani confirms: “The 110 is a true hybrid because it offers the volumes and comforts of a deckhouse yacht, but with a flush-deck that offers the spirit and the performance of a racing boat. The raised bulwarks do the job of disguising the fact that this is a raised saloon yacht, with the engine room beneath the floor. That means all the advantages of the layout, without the compromised aesthetics.”

Besides the full carbon lay-up, there is a high-performance carbon rig and the choice of three keel configurations. Other technical highlights include the use of lightweight lithium-ion batteries and auxiliary equipment, multiple high-pressure hydraulic pumps for maximum redundancy, and a low-profile twin rudder set-up. Naturally, the wallywind110 also features Wally’s underwater anchoring system, and famous Magic Trim hydraulic system for the main and jib sheets.

Owners suite on the wallywind 110

One of the most appealing design elements is the removable deck furniture, which pays homage to the heyday of big yacht racing. Every seat, sunbed, lounger and table can be removed and kept ashore to ready the wallywind110 for racing. Of course, the design is quintessential Wally, right down to the famous ‘terrace on the sea’ – a deep, sheltered aft deck.

And there’s even a huge tender compartment hidden beneath this deck, capable of storing a boat up to 24-feet long. This keeps the transom clear for swimmers, where a hydraulic bathing ladder can completely retract into the hull.

wallywind 110 lights up the night

The two larger boats in the wallywind range are the 130 and 150. The first of these yachts is suited to an owner with experience of boats around the 100ft mark, but who wants a little more space. It has a deckhouse offering a true raised saloon area that spans the divide between indoors and out.

“The 130 and 150 are clearly for owners who wish to take long cruises in any sea in the world, on a boat that offers not only comfort and a high degree of service, but also exceptional performance,” says Stefano de Vivo. “They are therefore passionate about sailing and the sea. The boats will also appeal to young people who want performance and who really connect with Wally’s brand values.”

WHY200: New interior images of Wally's spaceship superyacht model

Ferretti Group has released new interior shots of the first 27 metre WHY 200 superyacht, which made its debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival earlier this year.

The WHY200 was designed by Wally founder Luca Bassani in collaboration with the Ferretti Group ’s in-house engineering department. The first hull was delivered in 2021 and finished in an eye-catching 'Wally Silver'.

"With its widebody design, this 200 GT yacht offers far larger volumes compared to traditional motorboats, plus a living space and stability that are definitely greater than any competitor’s,"  says Stefano de Vivo, managing director of Wally. "It essentially provides all the advantages of a catamaran but has none of the limitations, namely the lack of volume linked to the main central hull and mooring problems."

Naval architecture meanwhile was penned by Laurent Giles NA while A. Vallicelli & C Studio designed the interior.

Maximising space is at the forefront of the design, which boasts up to 50% more living space than other yachts this size, Ferretti said. This can be seen in the 37 square metre master suite houses within a 4.7 metre-high glazed bow offering owners 270-degree views from the comfort of a central bed.

Speaking about the owner’s suite, Bassani previously said: “Imagine the feeling of waking up to uninterrupted views through vast windows in the bow, as if you are floating above the water. It is a genuine marvel to behold, we are especially proud of what has been achieved with this revolutionary layout.”

This particular unit features a four-cabin layout with the master cabin positioned forward on the main deck and a VIP and two guest cabins on the lower deck. The galley and crew accommodation also sits on the lower deck and includes three crew cabins for a staff of five.

More than 200 square metres of living space is found throughout the design, including a 22 square metre upper deck interior and 100 square metres main deck interior. The main saloon itself absorbs 61 square metres of the main deck and is home to a lounge and dining area, a show kitchen and a carbon, glass-wrapped staircase that takes centre stage, connecting all three decks.

The aft portion of the main deck features sunpads to either side with folding bulwarks to create a beach club, or "terrace over the water." Concealed below the sun pads is storage for a four metre jet tender, wave runner, SeaBob, paddleboard and all manner of water toys.

The first WHY200 is powered by four Volvo Penta D-13 IPS 1350 engines delivering a top speed of 23 knots complemented by fin stabilisers that can be used both at anchor and under power.

"Like all Wallys, which for 25 years have been ahead of their time and the setters of new standards in yachting design, the new compact superyacht WHY200 carries the 'wow' factor engraved in its DNA," said Bassani.

Speaking about the model, de Vivo previously said: “Through the WHY200, we are challenging preconceived notions of what a yacht should be and how it can be used. It is a platform that can be enjoyed by the whole family or groups of friends without compromise.”

At the 2021 Monaco Yacht Show, Ferretti Group revealed that the WHY200 was set to become a " fully-fledged series " in the near future.

World leader in yachting innovation, WALLY , is proud to launch a new sailing yacht Wally//Otto, which marks the beginning of new era for Maxi racing yachts. Wally/Otto superyacht is a state of the art 80ft, One Design racing yacht, with a one of a kind versatile design that intensifies year-round enjoyment and long-term value.

▪ Uncompromising racing performance at the highest levels ▪ Smarter, more realistic racing campaign budgets ▪ Quick conversion to a comfortable day-cruiser ▪ Much greater longevity and value retention

Once again, Wally has created a breakthrough yachting concept with the launch of a completely new idea. The Wally//Otto superyacht is the only One Design Maxi racing fleet. Sailing yacht Otto has been designed to sail with a limited crew and limited sail inventory to minimize campaign costs and maximize enjoyment.

The Otto yacht also features a unique aft ’guest experience’ area where private or charter guests can enjoy the racing in comfort and safety, removed from the operations of the racing crew. When not racing, the Otto can quickly transform into a comfortable and easy to sail ‘day-cruiser’, extending the enjoyment of the boat across the whole season.

As a One Design fleet, the Wally S/Y Otto can expect greater racing longevity. Otto has also been designed with the necessary headroom and bulkhead positions to successfully convert into a spacious Wally cruiser-racer, with salon, galley and three guest cabins.

This unique approach to racing yacht design extends Otto’s life beyond competitive sailing, ensuring greater year-round enjoyment, a longer life and, like all Wally yachts, a much greater residual value.

Speaking at the launch of Wally//Otto superyacht during round four of the FT Wally Grand Prix Series in Porto Cervo , Wally Founder and President, Luca Bassani Antivari said, “Otto is a new concept; a pure racing yacht which will allow owners to compete at the very highest level alongside the Americas Cup and Olympic standard sailors already competing in the Wally//Class. This intelligent, flexible design dispenses with the ownership challenges normally associated with a traditional ‘pure’ racing yacht.”

wallywind110 project

"Sailing yachts that masterfully combine Wally’s high-tech build with sharp styling and a clean, elegant interior to produce bluewater cruisers that thrill on the racecourse."

john hunt wally yachts

Wally is synonymous with the finest, fastest sailing yachts built in the modern era. The wallywind110 project takes the brand’s renowned performance and styling and elevates it to the next level for a new generation of passionate sailors. Measuring 33.42m (109ft 8in) from sheer bow to open stern, the wallywind110 oozes power. The all-carbon hull has been painstakingly optimised by the pre-eminent racing naval architecture studio judel/vrolijk & co, with twin rudders and a choice of keel technologies. Carbon rig, flush decks and a low-profile coachroof only add to the impression of speed. And yet this is a hybrid yacht, in the sense that it makes a superlative bluewater cruiser as well. Easy to handle, manoeuvrable and safe with its high bulwarks, it makes quick work of ocean crossings. And once at anchor, those wide decks provide multiple entertaining and relaxing areas, from the aft deck and 80sqm guest cockpit to the foredeck lounge. Smart removable furniture can be quickly installed to host 15 people in high style. Accommodation is flexible and typically Wally. Light streams into the open-plan saloon through the dramatic overhead skylight, while the full-beam owner’s cabin can be set up with walk-in wardrobes, a private lounge and his ‘n hers bathroom. Then there are three further guest cabins and an office, plus room for 5 crew.

Quintessentially Wally magic.

The letter “X” can symbolize a lot of things: a kiss, an unknown variable in an equation, or even death. In the case of Wally Yachts , though, X signifies power and speed.

In fact, Wally says the 58X is the first fleet member to be fitted with the new 600 hp Mercury V-12 Verado—it has four of them actually, which collectively produce 2,400 hp. The yacht also sports a deep V-hull to help it slice through waves quickly and efficiently. As a result, fuel consumption remains relatively low, according to the yard. The tankage gives it a range of about 320 nautical miles.

“Wally stands for avant-garde, so it should come as no surprise that we have found a way to unite the very latest in outboard performance with the essential access to the water that the wallypower line provides,” Wally’s managing director Stefano de Vivo said in a statement. “Exhilarating speed from 2,400 hp of motors, peerless handling and a true spirit of enjoying what nature has to offer—these are all hallmarks of Wally yachts .”

The new Mercurys have other benefits beyond sheer grunt, too. The outboards have a reduced draft compared to other models, so traversing shallow waters is no problem. The rotating gearcases and joystick maneuvering system, meanwhile, enable precise docking in tight spaces.

Another highlight is the “magic porthole.” Essentially, Wally decided to eschew windows on the hull in favor of video cameras on either side of the exterior. The yard says this setup requires less maintenance and ensures more privacy.

This year’s PBIBS kicks off today and runs through Sunday, March 26. If you’re heading to the West Palm Beach waterfront, be sure to check out these 12 newcomers .

Coordinates of Elektrostal in decimal degrees

Coordinates of elektrostal in degrees and decimal minutes, utm coordinates of elektrostal, geographic coordinate systems.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
