Sunreef Yachts will display Eco sailing and power catamarans among its three-yacht display at this year’s Abu Dhabi International Boat Show, which will be held at ADNEC Marina from November 9-12. Company representatives will welcome visitors throughout the four-day show.

The Polish builder has two production facilities in Gdansk and one in Ras Al Khaimah in the UAE, where it also has a regional office in Dubai and is a strong supporter of local boat shows and yachting events.

Sunreef’s line-up at berth CD003 at the Abu Dhabi International Boat Show includes the Middle East premiere of the 80 Sunreef Power Eco, with Athena Too on display after the yacht also exhibited at the Cannes Yachting Festival and Monaco Yacht Show in September.

Athena Too has two 180kW electric engines and an ultralight 330kWh battery bank. The yacht also uses Sunreef’s revolutionary solar power system, with solar cells built into the composite bodywork on the hulls, superstructure and hard top.

Sunreef’s grand display at ADNEC Marina also includes the first Sunreef 80 Eco sailing catamaran, Marie-Joseph , which had its world premiere at Cannes last year and was on display at this year’s Dubai International Boat Show in March.

Marie-Joseph has Sunreef’s ‘solar skin’ built into the hull sides, superstructure, hard top and even mast, and is equipped with advanced electric engines and a hydro-generation system, so can generate energy while under sail.

Louvre Abu Dhabi museum to celebrate fifth anniversary with special events throughout November

  • Environment

Celebrations include new displays, community events and a festival

NAT NAT_221111 Louvre Anniversary_SZ-1668233337124

Abu Dhabi: Louvre Abu Dhabi will celebrate its fifth anniversary this month under the theme ‘The Grand Story Continues’, hosting a spectacular line-up of new artworks, cultural events, educational activities and global entertainment, the museum has said.

With community always at the heart of the museum’s programming, visitors to Louvre Abu Dhabi will enjoy a month-long celebration featuring new loans, acquisitions and displays in the galleries, including a Leonardo da Vinci masterpiece, plus workshops, curatorial talks and much more, complemented by a series of unforgettable concerts by three internationally and regionally acclaimed artists: John Legend, Majid Al-Muhandis and Omar Khairat.

The anniversary events are supported by Cartier and Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB) as Louvre Abu Dhabi’s fifth anniversary partners.

Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, museum chairman, said: “Louvre Abu Dhabi’s fifth anniversary milestone marks the museum’s contribution to the cultural transformation of the emirate, enriching lives by making cultural connections and curating the story of our shared humanity. Louvre Abu Dhabi occupies a special place at the heart of Saadiyat Cultural District, which is rapidly evolving into a leading destination for art, history and culture. We are sharing the best of Abu Dhabi with the world and invite everyone to celebrate with us.”

First five years

The Louvre Abu Dhabi first opened its doors on November 11, 2017. In the first five years of its operation, the museum has established itself as a leading global cultural institution, and has become one of Abu Dhabi’s favourite destinations, attracting both the local community and international visitors.

Since its opening in 2017, Louvre Abu Dhabi has welcomed more than 3.2 million visitors from around the world, partnered with over 30 regional, French and international museums and institutions, organised 16 exhibitions in partnership with French and regional museums and opened the region’s first-of-its-kind research laboratory.

Education programmes have included school and university guided tours, workshops and programmes engaging over 120,000 students, alongside an annual public programme of masterclasses and activities for both families and adults. Through special activities developed to engage all segments of UAE society, Louvre Abu Dhabi welcomed more than 1,300 senior citizens and nearly 1,000 People of Determination, orphans and young adults being reintegrated into the community. The museum has also been building the next generation of Emirati museum professionals by providing job opportunities and high-standard training in the cultural sector.

New displays

To mark the anniversary, a series of new acquisitions and loans from around the world was installed in the galleries. Louvre Abu Dhabi’s collection is complemented by the arrival of Leonardo da Vinci’s renowned masterpiece, Saint John the Baptist, the first in a series of four major loans from Musée du Louvre. Loans from other partner museums include an Ivory Comb dating to 2300 BCE (Sharjah Archaeological Museum), a copy of The Travels of Marco Polo dating to the second half of the 14th century (Bibliothèque nationale de France), and the painting Woman in Blue by Pablo Picasso, completed in 1944 (Centre national d’art et de culture Georges-Pompidou).

The loans are displayed alongside several exciting new acquisitions by the museum. Works recently acquired by Louvre Abu Dhabi for its permanent collection include the painting Thurifer Angel in a Yellow Tunic (c. 1520) by Bernhard Strigel, The Cup of Chocolate (1877 – 1878) by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (currently on display in the museum’s Impressionism exhibition), and a Chinese Ritual Tripod Food Vessel from the late Shang Dynasty (12th – 11th century BCE).

Also on show in the galleries are two rooms representing different time periods, immersing viewers in a time and place through furniture, décor, artworks, sound and projection.

Contemporary installations

Contemporary works are also represented, with 11 mirrors from Italian artist Michelangelo Pistoletto’s series Mirror Paintings that will be on display until February 2023. These artworks consist of panels of stainless steel polished to a mirror finish, onto which Pistoletto applies an image made by tracing a photograph blown up to life size on flimsy paper.

The museum has invited renowned artist Jenny Holzer to present a new sequence of her iconic light projections on and from Louvre Abu Dhabi’s stunning architecture. Through her work titled BIRTHDAY, Holzer will revisit the theme of creation in the form of large-scale light projections featuring extraordinary words by poets, artists and others she admires, from the region and beyond.

Major exhibitions

Visitors can also explore two major exhibitions in honour of the museum’s anniversary. On display now is Impressionism: Pathways to Modernity (through February 5, 2023), the region’s largest-ever showcase of Impressionist artworks, which examines this key artistic movement that completely revolutionised artists’ way of seeing and painting the world. The exhibition is organised by Louvre Abu Dhabi in partnership with Musée d’Orsay and France Muséums, and curated by Sylvie Patry, Chief Curator, Deputy Director for Collections and Curatorial Affairs at Musée d’Orsay, and Stéphane Guégan, Scientific Advisor to the President, Musée d’Orsay et Musée de l’Orangerie.

Louvre Abu Dhabi and Swiss watchmaking brand Richard Mille are organising the second edition of the Louvre Abu Dhabi Art Here exhibition and the Richard Mille Art Prize (18 November 2022— 19 February 2023). Louvre Abu Dhabi Art Here 2022 welcomed entries from contemporary artists based in the UAE and across the GCC. The selected artists’ works will be showcased at the museum’s Forum, and from these, the winner of the second edition of the Richard Mille Art Prize will be announced during an awarding ceremony that will take place early next year.

Grand festival

Highlighting global exchange and connectivity, the Louvre Abu Dhabi Grand Festival will present unmissable concerts by three internationally and regionally acclaimed artists in a uniquely stunning over-water setting. On a stage surrounded by sea, and under a starry sky, Iraqi singer and composer Majid Al-Muhandis will perform on 11 November, multi-award-winning vocalist and global superstar John Legend will perform on 12 November, and the legendary Egyptian pianist and composer Omar Khairat will perform on 13 November.

Other events

Every Tuesday in November, art lovers have the chance to attend a talk given by one of the central protagonists in the Louvre Abu Dhabi story. Each discussion will offer a particular perspective that sheds light on Louvre Abu Dhabi’s continued evolution, unpacking the different components that make up a universal museum.

Other fun, family-friendly activities include electric catamaran rides around museum, allowing visitors to make the most of the cool weather, enjoy unique views, and further their cultural experience.

The original model of Louvre Abu Dhabi, created by Ateliers Jean Nouvel, will be available for public viewing at the museum, enabling visitors to view the iconic landmark from different perspectives.

A special digital exhibition showcasing moments from the museum’s first five years will also be on display at the museum’s entrance, inviting the public to interact and celebrate their most cherished memories at Louvre Abu Dhabi.

The museum re-launched its Creative Interpreters initiative in September this year, allowing young students to explore and research the museum collection, and encouraging them to create unique and engaging ways to present the artworks, using their own voices.

The University Takes over the Museum programme sees students respond to the museum’s collection and the question of ‘What does it mean to be human?’, producing artistic interpretations and interventions in the form of creative encounters, activities, workshops and performances.

Archer to Install Electric Air Taxi Hubs in Dubai, Abu Dhabi

Vertiports will connect the two cities with estimated 30-minute flights, a fraction of the two hours it can take to drive between them during peak traffic..

electric catamaran abu dhabi

Archer Aviation, manufacturer of the Midnight electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air taxi, is stepping up its plans for service in the United Arab Emirates as soon as next year.

The company on Monday expanded its partnership with Emirati aviation services provider Falcon Aviation to build a vertiport network for eVTOL air taxi operations in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the two largest cities in the UAE. San Jose, California-based Archer expects the UAE to be its first international launch market.

Archer and Falcon initially agreed upon a deal that would see Falcon operate “scores” of Midnight aircraft across the UAE and expand the former’s urban air mobility (UAM) ecosystem. The collaboration includes the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), the city’s central government hub for investment.

Archer believes it is the first to announce an eVTOL air taxi route between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, which it said is “one of the world’s most prominent and congested commute corridors.” The manufacturer estimated flights will last 30 minutes: a fraction of the two hours it could take to drive between the cities during peak traffic.

electric catamaran abu dhabi

“Partnering with established operators such as Falcon Aviation, as well as the capital of the Emirates with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office, has been key to quickly building our presence in the region,” said Archer founder and CEO Adam Goldstein. “We look forward to paving the way for the introduction of our Midnight aircraft to the region, which will set the stage for the UAE to become a global leader in urban air mobility.”

Preparing for (Vertical) Takeoff

Falcon last week upgraded its heliport terminal at Atlantis, The Palm, in Dubai, a hub for sightseeing trips above the city’s skyline. The terminal also provides helicopter charter flights between the hotel and Abu Dhabi, as well as other nearby cities. As early as next year, Falcon will operate Midnight out of that site and its Marina Mall heliport in Abu Dhabi.

The vertiports will connect the two cities with routes almost entirely over water, providing scenic views for passengers. At the same time, Archer claims Midnight will be quieter, safer, and more affordable than comparable helicopters.

electric catamaran abu dhabi

“For nearly two decades, Falcon Aviation has been at the forefront of helicopter passenger transport in the UAE,” said Ramandeep Oberoi, CEO of Falcon. “Our partnership with Archer is a leap into the future, as we prepare to offer flying car services together in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, continuing our tradition of world-class transportation solutions.”

Archer’s vision is for Midnight to swap 60-90-minute commutes by car for back-to-back, 10-30-minute electric air taxi flights, with only 10-12 minutes of charge time between. Designed for a pilot plus up to four passengers, the aircraft has a range of 52 sm (45 nm) and cruise speed of 130 knots.

In addition to service in the U.S. in partnership with United Airlines, Archer intends to serve the entire UAE and Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

“We have made rapid progress in the UAE over the past three months since announcing Abu Dhabi and Dubai will be home to our first international Midnight flights as soon as 2025,” said Nikhil Goel, chief commercial officer of Archer. “We’re proud to be the first to announce plans to operate between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, along with vertiport infrastructure at both ends of the commuter journey.”

The ADIO, which is supporting Archer’s UAE launch with economic incentives, last year agreed to host the company’s engineering and manufacturing facilities within the Smart and Autonomous Vehicle Industry (SAVI) cluster, an urban hub designed to speed the development of new land, air, and sea vehicles. Manufacturing partner Stellantis—which will support Midnight mass production and is aiding the construction of Archer’s scaled manufacturing plant in Covington, Georgia—will help build them.

Archer last year also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Emirati private heliport operator Air Chateau International for the planned purchase of 100 Midnight air taxis, which Air Chateau will operate regionwide. The partners are further exploring infrastructure investments, such as for vertiports and electric aircraft chargers, in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Complicating matters somewhat is the presence of eVTOL air taxi competitor Joby Aviation.

Joby last month signed an agreement with Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA)—the government entity that regulates the city’s public transport—for the exclusive right to operate electric air taxi services in Dubai for six years following the launch of service. That’s expected to happen in 2025 or 2026.

However, while it sounds like the arrangement would prevent Joby’s competitors from flying in Dubai, Archer CEO Adam Goldstein told FLYING that will not be the case.

“I do not believe it will impact our operations in Dubai or our ambitions in Dubai,” said Goldstein. “We believe we will be able to operate there, and we will have a strong hub out of Abu Dhabi. We’re glad to see Joby coming to the region and leaning in, because we think it’s a good early market for eVTOL players to start.”

By stepping up the company’s partnership with Falcon, the Archer CEO is putting his money where his mouth is. Vertiport infrastructure is not cheap, and Archer likely would not pursue it if it believed Dubai to be off the table.

Falcon in 2022 also purchased 35 air taxis from Embraer subsidiary Eve Air Mobility, with the companies announcing plans to launch eVTOL tourism flights in Dubai. China’s EHang and Germany’s Lilium are among other air taxi manufacturers looking to operate in the UAE.

Falcon Aviation to Operate Archer eVTOL Aircraft For Dubai to Abu Dhabi Flights

  • Charles Alcock
  • March 12, 2024

UAE-based private flight provider Falcon Aviation will launch eVTOL air services connecting Abu Dhabi and Dubai under an agreement with manufacturer Archer. The partnership announced today calls for the two companies to develop a network of vertiports connecting the two cities with Archer’s four-passenger Midnight aircraft, with operations to begin as early as 2025.

The starting point for the joint operation will be the Falcon Tours Heliport Terminal at Dubai’s Atlantis The Palm resort which Falcon Aviation upgraded last year and officially opened on March 8. Abu Dhabi-based Falcon already provides helicopter charter flights and sightseeing tours across the UAE, as well as operating business jets and providing ground handling and maintenance support to other companies.

Flights from Atlantis will connect with the Marina Mall Heliport in Abu Dhabi’s Corniche district. Flying over the Gulf, the Midnight aircraft will make the trip in 30 minutes from takeoff to landing, which compares with a 90-mile drive of around two hours during peak traffic. The two companies now plan to adapt the existing heliports for use by eVTOLs.

“For nearly two decades, Falcon Aviation has been at the forefront of helicopter passenger transport in the UAE,” said company CEO Ramandeep Oberoi. “Our partnership with Archer is a leap into the future, as we prepare to offer flying car services together in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, continuing our tradition of world-class transportation solutions.”

Falcon Aviation has previously evaluated Eve Air Mobility’s four-passenger eVTOL, which is not expected to complete type certification before the end of 2026. The company also had discussions with other eVTOL aircraft developers, including Joby Aviation, AutoFlight, Overair, and Ascendance.

Archer Goes Head-to-head with Rival Joby

Last month, Dubai’s government granted Joby exclusive access to the local market for on-demand air taxi services within the emirate for a six-year period. The agreement with the Road and Transport Authority envisions operations from a network of vertiports, with the first four locations being at Dubai International Airport, the Palm Jumeirah, Dubai marina, and Dubai downtown.

The agreement between Archer and Falcon Aviation builds on a memorandum of understanding forged last year in which the UAE-based company agreed in principle to operate the Midnight aircraft, which Archer is aiming to have certified and ready to enter service in 2025. The collaboration is backed by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office, which is expected to make an undisclosed investment in what is set to be Archer’s first international operation. Archer will participate in Abu Dhabi’s Smart and Autonomous Vehicle Industry cluster.

In November, during the Dubai Airshow, Archer signed an agreement with India’s InterGlobe Enterprises that could lead to the purchase of up to 200 Midnights. These would be used for commercial flights in cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.

“We have made rapid progress in the UAE over the past three months since announcing Abu Dhabi and Dubai will be home to our first international Midnight flights as soon as 2025,” said Archer chief commercial officer Nikhil Goel. “We’re proud to be the first to announce plans to operate between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, along with vertiport infrastructure at both ends of the commuter journey.”

Like Joby, Archer is pressing hard to complete FAA type certification by the end of 2024, with the hope that regulators in states such as the UAE will quickly endorse this approval. Last month, Archer announced it had completed the third of three stages of flight testing with its Midnight prototype aircraft.

On March 8, it reported an incident in which the right landing gear oleo strut "had an issue" without sustaining damage to the rest of the aircraft, with repairs expected to ground that aircraft for a couple of weeks. Testing is continuing with other prototypes.
