VESSEL REVIEW | Yacht Servant – Dutch operator adds large semi-submersible newbuild to yacht transport fleet

dutch yacht transport

Amsterdam-based DYT Yacht Transport recently took delivery of a new large yacht transport vessel built by Yantai CIMC Raffles Shipyard in China.

Designed by DYT parent company the Spliethoff Group, the Lloyd’s Register-classed Yacht Servant is the largest vessel in the DYT fleet with an LOA of 213.7 metres, a beam of 46 metres, a draught of 4.6 metres, and deck space totalling 6,380 square metres. The semi-submersible newbuild also boasts nearly double the capacity of earlier vessels in the DYT fleet, allowing fewer trips to be made.

The vessel is capable of carrying deep-draught sailing yachts and accessing more remote destinations. The lower deck height means ballast time, and therefore port time, is significantly reduced, as submerging operations can be done faster than on sister vessels.

The newbuild also boasts greater operational flexibility. Whereas the current vessels in DYT’s semi-submersible fleet require operating water depths of around 14 metres, Yacht Servant only requires an operating water depth of nine metres using a unique float-on, float-off system. The vessel also features a new specialised deck located behind the bridge to accommodate tenders, containers, small race boats, tugs, barges, military vessels, and even non-floating cargo such as wind turbine blades, allowing the company to serve a diverse range of clients.

“The vessel’s unique design has been focused on creating the most efficient yacht carrier possible, while using our signature float-on, float-off method,” DYT told Baird Maritime. “One of the main goals was to be able to float in deep-draught yachts and other vessels in shallow waters. When submerged in water depths of only 13.5 metres, Yacht Servant can load yachts and vessels with a draught of up to 7.5 metres, which is a great improvement over existing semi-submersible vessels.”

Two Caterpillar-MaK 5,200kW, scrubber and SCR-equipped IMO Tier III-compliant engines ensure a 32 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency, and the hull itself is of an optimised design to help further reduce emissions. Auxiliary power is also available via two 1,400kW engines. The main engines may be configured in future to enable them to run on alternative fuels.

The engines drive controllable-pitch propellers to enable the vessel to reach a maximum speed of 15.1 knots while the service speed is set at 13.5 knots. If needed, it can stay out at sea for up to 60 days. The optimised hull form also improves performance in adverse weather conditions, enabling the ship to maintain speed while motions and accelerations are reduced as much as possible.

“The redundant propulsion and steering system is fully compliant with all current NOx and SOx emission control regulations. Double shaft lines, the controllable-pitch propellers, two flap rudders, and two bow thrusters are provided for excellent manoeuvring characteristics.”

The ship is also equipped with anchors and spud poles to assist in station keeping and mooring. By arranging two spud poles, the ship is able to fix itself into position when performing submerging operations at anchorages or in remote bays. This ensures that the vessel remains firmly in position while yachts and cargo sail in and out of the vessel’s hold.

A trolley system is arranged inside the hold to facilitate moving and mooring of large floating objects that may not always be able to enter under their own power. By using trolleys, DYT was able to move and control these large objects very precisely while not needing to rely on tugs for assistance.

“Our experiences with our existing vessels were taken into account to further optimise the loading process,” added DYT. “The full-height stern door can be closed off immediately after sail-in has been completed, providing a full enclosed hold in which the cargo is safely protected from outside factors such as wind and waves from traffic passing by.”

dutch yacht transport

The ship’s advanced systems include an environmental management system, a performance monitoring and optimisation system, a weather routing, motion monitoring and prediction system, and a marine advisory system from ABB. Electricity and water facilities are also available for use by yachts so that their auxiliary systems can be kept running while they are being transported.

“The navigation bridge uses state-of-the-art electronics,” DYT told Baird Maritime. ”The layout and arrangement are such that a full 360-degree clear view is provided from any navigation position in the bridge. A dedicated workstation for loading and submerging operations is also provided to give the crew a clear view of the hold and the loading operations while remaining in continuous control of ballast operations, vessel stability, and communication with the other crew and the load masters.”

Accommodation spaces are available for the ship’s 28-strong crew as well as 32 other personnel.

Yacht Servant will soon commence sailings on its intended routes, which will cover the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and Florida.

DYT takes delivery of world’s largest purpose-built yacht transport vessel

by Mariska Buitendijk | Jan 19, 2022 | News , Project cargo , Ship design , Shipbuilding , Yachts

dutch yacht transport

DYT Superyacht Transport has added the purpose-built semi-submersible yacht transport vessel Yacht Servant to its fleet. In addition to being thirty per cent larger than its sistership Yacht Express and being Tier III compliant, it only requires an operating water depth of 9 metres using a unique float-on, float-off system.

The official delivery took place on 4 January at Yantai CIMC Raffles Shipyard on China’s Shandong Peninsula. Three days later, the vessel embarked on its maiden voyage from Shanghai to Panama.

With a length over all of 213.70 metres, a 46-metre beam and a 4.6-metre draught, the Yacht Servant provides virtually double the capacity of its predecessors. The IMO Tier III compliant vessel is also 32 per cent more fuel efficient, while its 6380 m2 deck space facilitates the transport of more vessels per crossing.

Reduced operating water depth

It has a lower deck height, which means the ballast time (therefore port time) is significantly reduced. It also means it can carry yachts with deeper draught and enter ports with shallower waters. It is equipped with two spud poles for quick mooring, and has electricity and water facilities for onboard yachts.

Whereas the current vessels in DYT’s semi-submersible fleet require operating water depths of around 14 metres, Yacht Servant only requires an operating water depth of 9 metres using a unique float-on, float-off system. Yacht Servant’s new specialised deck located behind the bridge built to accommodate tenders, containers and small race boats offers extra flexibility.

‘We’re all hugely excited about the addition of Yacht Servant to our semi-submersible fleet,’ says Richard Klabbers, Managing Director of DYT Superyacht Transport . ‘Her sheer size and volume allow for so much more capacity, and we’re looking forward to discovering how the vessel’s additional capabilities – such as onboard cranes, reduced board draft and increased submerged draft – will further what we can deliver.’

Fleet of three yacht transport vessels

On completion of its 2022 maiden voyage, Yacht Servant will return to China to transport cargo to Colombia during the yachting off season, before arriving in the Caribbean in May to commence its sailing schedule between Florida, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean.

‘Last year was a challenge for the entire yacht transportation industry, with lockdowns and global uncertainties affecting travel the world over,’ adds Klabbers. ‘But our order books for 2022 are already encouragingly healthy, and with Yacht Servant now bringing our DYT fleet total to three vessels, we’ve made a hugely promising start to the new year.’

DYT was formerly known as Dockwise Yacht Transport and is a member of the Spliethoff Group. The design of the Yacht Servant was conceived in-house by the Spliethoff Group.

Sevenstar Yacht Transport was founded in 1985 to serve the North European market. Acquired by Dutch worldwide shipping company the Spliethoff Group in 2000, it expanded to become a worldwide network with offices in the United States, the UK, Australia and Turkey, and agents in Monaco, Germany, Russia and New Zealand.

Today Sevenstar is the world’s leading provider of yacht transportation services on a lift-on, lift-off basis. We arrange the transport of around 2,000 yachts annually and are expanding in the growing economies of Asia, South America and Africa.

OUR CARRIERS

Sevenstar has access to the Spliethoff Group’s own fleet of vessels. Our ships are designed especially for yacht transport and we believe in constantly developing our staff and tools to perfect skills and technologies. Spliethoff has a modern fleet of around 125 vessels from 2,100 to 23,000 tonnes, and is a leading provider in specialised sea transport.

OUR SCHEDULES

Our global spread of destinations provides access to the world’s premier ports and cruising grounds. Check our sailing schedule at the right of this page. If none of these scheduled services appeals, we can provide a customised travel itinerary. Contact us to find out more.

WE SHIP YOUR YACHT

Having an in-house operational team and over 120 of our own yacht transporters means that the care of your boat is never outsourced to an unknown contractor so we – and you – have full control of your yacht’s care. To load and secure your yacht we use custom-made, certified cradles and lashing systems to ensure the vessel’s safety during loading, transit and unloading. A skilled Sevenstar loadmaster will be in attendance during the load/offload process.

If we are shipping a sailing yacht that can’t stand on its own keel we supply specially designed cradles to account for this and all sailing craft are transported without removing standing rigging or spars.

Throughout the voyage you will be sent regular updates on the transporter’s progress and, on board, your yacht will be kept locked for the duration of the trip, inspected daily and only ever accessed by authorised personnel. Once the transfer is complete, keys and documentation will be handed over to the owner or a nominated representative – no one else.

Yacht Express

Yacht transport: meet the yacht express.

As the leaders in yacht transport since the 1980s, DYT is taking yacht delivery to an even higher level by introducing the world’s first specifically built yacht motor vessel – Yacht Express. This innovative and powerful carrier provides the fastest  transatlantic yacht delivery  available from Florida and the Mediterranean and features amenities designed for worldwide yacht transport such as:

  • Conference room
  • Atrium with lounge
  • Swimming pool
  • Fitness room
  • Laundry facilities
  • Complimentary cabins for ride-aboard crew
  • Additional facilities to make the voyage as productive and pleasant as possible.

This yacht transport vessel is the largest of its kind, and it has a variety of unique features that make it an effective, powerful and dynamic yacht carrier. Be sure to check out all of our  destinations  to see everywhere this one-of-a-kind carrier can take you.

Yacht Express: Design Features Yacht Express is semi-submersible and offers our unique float-on/float-off loading method. It has an impressive length of 209 meters (685.7 ft) and a beam of 32.2 meters (106 ft). Your yacht is safely accommodated between spray covers in the dock bay, which measures at 165 meters (541 ft) long and 31 meters (102 ft) wide. With a deck space of 5,115 square meters (55,060 ft) DYT is able to transport more yachts in one voyage.

The ballasting and deballasting processes are carried out by four main ballast pumps, each with a capacity of 1,200 cu.m/h at 30 m head. The other pump systems include two fi-fi/general service pumps, each with a capacity of:

  • 100 cu.m/h at 80 m head or 210 cu.m/h at 30 m head
  • An emergency fire pump of 72 cu.m/h at 70 m head
  • A 200 cu.m/h ejector pump.

Cargo handling is facilitated by a 2 x 10 t crane with an outreach of 15 m.

Yacht Express: Propulsion Plant Yacht Express has a propulsion and maneuvering plant consisting of two 8,700 kW Wärtsilä 12V38 B common rail diesel generator sets, each driving two Lips azimuth pulling thrusters featuring cp-propellers via two electric motors of 5,100 kW each. Maneuvering is enhanced by a single 1,640 kW bow thruster with cp-propeller. Auxiliary power is derived from two Wärtsilä 6L20 common rail diesel generator sets of 1,020 kW, and emergency power is supplied by a Volvo Penta D34A MS generator of 610 kW, 440 V, 60 Hz.

The spacious bridge on this impressive yacht transport carrier features an integrated bridge system consisting of a UniMACS 3000 containing two radar systems with ARPA and two ECDIS, one conning and platform management system, and an advanced DPT 3500 autopilot/joystick system.

The Sophistication of the Yacht Express This sophisticated yacht delivery vessel is designed to have a service speed of 18 knots, meaning that a trans-Atlantic voyage from the Mediterranean to Florida/Caribbean with this ultra modern yacht carrier will be greatly reduced from 15 to 10 days! Owners can enjoy the advantage of extra riders on board to accompany the yacht during the voyage and they get to enjoy our state-of-the-art facilities. The addition of this new yacht carrier to our fleet implies an important step forward for DYT to improve the quality of services to clients that is based on safety, regularity and reliability.

Yacht Express: Launch completed The launch of Yacht Express was a major milestone in the development of the yacht transport and delivery industry, and Dockwise was proud to be on the forefront of it. On January 15th, 2007, the Yacht Express was skidded from its construction berth ashore onto four connected floating submersible barges, a process which took 6 hours to complete. It had been under construction since September 2005.

On January 19th, 2007, the barges were submerged and the Yacht Express floated off at high tide and moored alongside the construction berth for further outfitting and commissioning. DYT took delivery of the vessel in October, 2007, and our newest yacht transport service on this large and powerful vessel commenced.

Principal characteristics of this new yacht transport carrier include:

Legal advice in the Netherlands when Buying a Yacht

Before you buy a yacht in Holland, there are many things you should consider. When you make the decision to purchase a boat, the first considerations to be made are to understand your needs and be confident in your ability to evaluate the boat’s performance. As a purchaser you also need to ensure that the seller has title to the boat and that the boat is worth the money you will pay. It is crucial to properly handle legal paperwork, especially if you are intending to export the yacht from the Netherlands.  Our attorneys in the Netherlands have extensive experience representing both individuals and corporations involved in major yacht construction contracts in the Netherlands and can assist you in buying or building a yacht in The Netherlands.

Contract of sale for a yacht under Dutch law

Our Dutch lawyers in Amsterdam will review any contract of sale for a yacht and make modifications if necessary to protect the client’s rights. If you are a purchaser these changes may need to be discussed with the broker or seller of the yacht. Although the seller may not accept all changes, it is possible that the client would be better off if the contracts were not amended by a Dutch lawyer. This is because many purchasers don’t understand or read the contract. It should also be understood that contracts can be negotiable instruments and should reflect all the interests. Dutch law imposes a duty to investigate the yacht and it is strongly recommended to ask for advice and a written report from an independent expert. These reports are sometimes called Marine Surveys or Valuation Reports and are prepared by marine surveyors who have inspected the boat in and out of water. This report may also be required by your insurer before you are approved for insurance.

Yachting lawyers in the Netherlands.

The Broker or Seller may give you a copy of such a report on the boat. However, it should only be considered informative. Accepting an inspection report or a recommendation from a broker or seller regarding a boat inspector or surveyor may not guarantee you a complete and impartial report. It is recommended to engage your own expert and report. When choosing a surveyor, ask your surveyor if they have experience with the boat type you are interested in. A fixed price quote should be requested from the surveyor with clear details of the inspections to be done.

Important points in the inspection report when buying a yacht

You must first find a qualified surveyor who is familiar with the boat type you are looking to buy in the Netherlands. The report from a surveyor will give you additional assurance about the vessel. He will also be legally responsible for any costs incurred to correct any defects he may have missed. Indemnity insurance should be purchased by the surveyor to cover this risk. You can use any material defects found in the surveyor’s report to negotiate a lower purchase price or ask the seller to correct the defect at his expense before the contract is completed. It is best to accompany the surveyor during their inspection.

A written report should be requested and provided. As the report will usually cost you money upfront be sure to ask about the details of the content and inclusions of the final report. You may need to have an inspection or test done on major items, such as the engines. An out-of-water inspection is necessary to determine the condition of the hull’s underwater parts. All materials, including fiberglass, wood, metal and metal, can coexist in water for many years if the relevant coatings are properly applied and the boat is maintained. Electrolysis can occur if the boat is not maintained or coated properly which can lead to major damage to the hull structure, and to the boat’s fittings. An inspection can expose these defects as well as others.

Dutch law exclusions and limitations on the survey

Surveys can be expensive, so make sure you know what you will get before you sign up for one. You should question whether high-risk areas are affected by comments in the report. A competent surveyor should be able to inform you about any potential dangers in these areas.

Inquiries about title and registration of a ship in the Netherlands

The Dutch Register (Kadaster) may allow a ship from the Netherlands to be registered. This registration can be revoked if it is transferred. The Buyer may choose to register the boat in any other jurisdiction. Only after the boat has been registered, the seller can verify the title. The information provided by the seller is binding if the boat is not registered. In this case, a security right might not be ‘visible. However, the Seller has a duty of disclosure to the Buyer about all issues relevant to his decision to purchase the boat. Ask the seller for documents of title that show the chain of ownership, from the time the boat was built up to the present. Paperwork should include a signed bill of sale and a building certificate. For any repairs, ask for proof of payment for mooring fees, insurance documents, and/or membership to a sailing club.

Dutch law provides security for yachts

A loan that the Seller took out to purchase the boat may still be outstanding. This loan may need to be secured by a charge such as your mortgage. These are commonly called “encumbrances”. It is fine if the beneficiary of the charge agrees to release you so that clear title and unencumbered ownership can be transferred from the Seller. A Dutch Notary should handle the sale of a mortgage. This will be registered in the Dutch Register. MAAK Advocaten can arrange for a notary to be appointed in the Netherlands to facilitate transfer of the boat in these instances.

Dutch law provides conditions and terms for a contract to sell a boat

Dutch law will likely apply to a contract for the sale of a yacht sold in The Netherlands. There may be some legal principles or terms that are not the same as in other European countries so a lawyer experienced in Dutch law is sometimes preferable. Before you sign a contract of sale, it is wise to have a yachting lawyer review it. MAAK’s Dutch marine lawyers can help you with this. Some terms of the contract of sale include:

• the boat description in detail, including its registration number and inventory of accessories. • terms of repayment for the deposit and price when buying a yacht in the Netherlands. • the requirement of satisfactory inspection and repair of any deficiencies found in the Survey. • If the Buyer is required to obtain satisfactory financing approval, a requirement that the buyer must complete the purchase once it is obtained. • if finance is refused or the inspection report is not satisfactory, a Buyer has the right to cancel and receive a refund of your deposit. • if the price has not been paid in full, title and property are not transferable. • confirmation that the Seller is the owner of the boat and can sell it to the Buyer • the boat will be delivered and transferred without any charges, maritime claims or encumbrances. • after the trial is over, protocol and delivery. • any warranty or disclaimers regarding fitness and condition of the boat must be clearly stated. • acknowledgement that before the transfer of the boat, there is risk for damage or loss. • the choice of law clause is a choice of dispute resolution.

Non-professionals selling a non-registered yacht in the Netherlands must guarantee the vessel for 6 months to cover any potential defects that arise. This is Dutch law. It is in the Seller’s best interest to know about any hidden defects or deficiencies when buying a yacht in the Netherlands. If a hidden defect is found within six months, the buyer may apply for the resolution or reduction of the yacht’s price.

MOL, Idemitsu, HIF Team up to Develop e-fuel/e-methanol Supply Chain, Including Marine Transport of CO 2

March 19, 2024

TOKYO-Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Takeshi Hashimoto) today announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the joint development of a synthetic fuel (e-fuel)/synthetic methanol (e-methanol) supply chain including CO 2 marine transport with Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. and HIF USA LLC and HIF Asia Pacific Pty Limited (HIF), subsidiaries of HIF Global, a leading worldwide producer of synthetic fuels/synthetic methanol.

Synthetic fuels and synthetic methanol are produced by synthesizing green hydrogen derived from renewable energy sources and CO 2 . The entire lifecycle of the product, from production to use of the final product, is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions, and is positioned for swift commercialization.

In this joint development project, the partners will work to develop a synthetic fuel/methanol supply chain, including the transport CO 2 as raw material, mainly through feasibility studies of the following items:

  • (1) CO 2 marine transport from Japan to HIF's overseas synthetic fuels/methanol production plants.
  • (2) Establishment of a supply chain to transport synthetic fuels/methanol produced by HIF at overseas production plants to Japan.
  • (3) Efficient and cost competitive marine transportation of CO 2 and synthetic methanol

Through this initiative, MOL, Idemitsu, and HIF intend to lead the decarbonization of the energy and transportation industries, and collaborate to develop potential business opportunities.
