The Celestial crew celebrates their Line Honours triumph.
Celestial wins Line Honours in 2023 Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race
CYCA Vice Commodore Sam Haynes’ TP52 Celestial won Line Honours in the 2023 Gladstone Ports Corporation Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race.
The 75th edition of the Queensland Cruising Yacht Club’s race was described as “brutal”, with a storm on the first night leading to the retirement of nine boats.
Difficult upwind sailing made it a much longer race than anticipated for the frontrunners, with Celestial first across the line in the early hours of Easter Sunday, after 1 day, 19 hours, 30 minutes and 49 seconds at sea.
The Celestial crew included CYCA Members Callum Cecil, George Richardson (YSA), Lindsay Stead and Rob Greenhalgh.
In an interview with the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race channel, Sam reflected: “It wasn’t what we signed on for! It was a very different race, very hard.
“We were just ahead of most of the storm, so we didn’t have lightning around our boat, but a lot of squalls and heavy rain.
“I’ve never seen a sea state like that. It was like a washing machine, waves going everywhere, very difficult to sail through.
“We probably had 80 tacks in the whole race, we had to keep changing direction.
“I haven’t had a Line Honours title in a significant race like this; it’s fantastic for us.”
CYCA Members featured prominently throughout the fleet.
Member Jack Kliner steered his S&S 34 Azzurro (which he purchased from Shane Kearns after the 2022 Rolex Sydney Hobart) to third place overall on IRC and victory on ORCi.
Member Michael Spies steered his Schumacher 54 Maritimo to first place in IRC Division 1, for fifth place overall. Member Kendal Barry-Cotter was also on board.
Member James Irvine’s Rogers 46 Mayfair was fourth in IRC Division 1 and 13th overall.
Meanwhile, Russell McCart’s Farr 40 Night Nurse was forced to retire with a torn mainsail.
CYCA Rear Commodore Tom Barker, and Members Wendy Tuck and Shane Guanaria were on board Ian and Annika Thomson’s TP52 Ocean Crusaders J-Bird III, which was second over the line.
The crew on Mark Griffith’s DK46 LCE Old School Racing, which was second in IRC Division 2 and 12th overall, included Members Angelique Kear, John Crawford and Sarah Crawford.

47 strong fleet to contest 75th Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race on Good Friday

Brisbane to Gladstone
QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA: There are still 38 of the original 46 starting fleet out on course racing one of Australia’s oldest and most iconic yacht races, the Gladstone Ports Corporation 75th Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race which set sail on Good Friday with eight yachts forced to retire after battling through two reported storm cells.
There have been no further race retirements today (Easter Saturday) and all all sailors and boats – retired or still racing and at sea – are safe.
The race fleet is currently facing blustery northerly conditions as they make their way up the coast with the majority of the fleet still not halfway through the race.
2022 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race winner, Celestial still leads the fleet on line honours while the smaller boats look like winning the race overall on corrected time.
The first yachts are still expected to cross the finish line tomorrow morning (Easter Sunday) with the tail of the fleet expected to cross Easter Monday morning.
Harley Cowlishaw from race organisers, Queensland Cruising Yacht Club (QCYC) says these are unusual weather conditions for the race which usually experiences southerly Easter trade wind conditions that send the fleet speedily up the east coast to Gladstone.
“The current standings are constantly changing but currently we are seeing the smaller boats looking like taking overall honours with yachts such as Son of a Son, Azzurro and Balancing Act all jostling to win the challenging race overall and put their name on The Courier-Mail Cup,” Mr Cowlishaw said.
“Last night was a dramatic evening for the race fleet as they faced serious weather systems – and not the normal Easter sailing conditions for the B2G but historically, there have been years when weather has challenged the race and 2023 was definitely one of those,” he said.
A re-cap on the list of retirements (in order of latest to earliest) is:
Black Diamond – seamanship decision, heading to Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Concerto 2 – seamanship decision, returning to Port Puppet – seamanship decision, at Port Obsession – sea sickness, at Port Flying Colours 2 – shredded mainsail, at Port Active Again – delaminated mainsail, at Port Aramex – sea sickness, returned to Southport Yacht Club Night Nurse, torn mainsail, at Port
Celeste reported to have been hit by lightning and lost all electronics from the strike. They still had VHF radio connectivity and iridium so chose to continue.
Hutchies Yeah Baby were confronted with a mainsail issue upon sunset but got it back in their mast track and were also able to continue.
Cate Parsons, crew member aboard Black Diamond which retired overnight recounts her experience of the storm conditions last night.
“The lightning was continuous with sheet and fork lightning and not a lot of rain and wind at first,” Cate said.
“The second cell was more direct and the boat saw more than 35-40 knots wind speed and we were only on the edge of it,” she said.
We were heading straight for it and as Black Diamond only has one reef – which is the ability to make the sail smaller – we weren’t able to de-power the boat and made the incredibly tough seamanship decision to preserve the boat and crew.”
Saskia Groen-In’t-Woud, owner and skipper of Celeste has reported in this afternoon.
“We are all OK. We had lightning right on the boat and think coincidentally lost our instruments for another reason,” Saskia said.
“It has been a race of attrition on our crew and the boat but we are loving it and CELESTE is – if we could just get ourselves together and sail her hard, she said.

Surf to City Yacht Race
About the Race
The Surf to City Yacht Race commences at the fabulous Gold Coast, off Southport in the vicinity of the Seaway, and finishes within Brisbane waters just off Shorncliffe. This truly makes the event a Race from “Surf to City.” In 2024, we celebrate the 31st anniversary of this sailing event with the race scheduled for 10th February 2024.
The race is organised and hosted by Queensland Cruising Yacht Club (QCYC) and run with the assistance of Southport Yacht Club. In 2024, the Offshore Race is one of six events making up the Southport Yacht Club’s inaugural Summer of Sailing Series Australia 2023-2024.
No other race in Australia consists of two fleets, an offshore and inshore fleet. The Surf to City Yacht Race is also one of a handful of races that see both monohull and multihull yachts compete in their respective divisions over the same course.
The Inshore Fleet is usually a day race. The course follows the main channel from Southport to Brisbane past the islands in the southern part of Moreton Bay. The Offshore Fleet is a day/night race. Starting off the Southport Seaway, the yachts head north around Cape Moreton to enter Moreton Bay and then to the finish off Shorncliffe.

The MYCQ Administers the Offshore Multihull Rating (OMR) System, which is used to handicap all Multihull Yachts. It is similar to the IRC system used for monohulls but is tailored to be applied to all Multihull Designs. This website provides:
- Specification - includes an introduction and guidelines on how to prepare your boat and how to measure your sails
- Measurement Form - This form is used when measuring your yacht
- Inventory Form - This form is used to record everything onboard your boat at the time of measuring
- Excel Version of the above forms
- Information on the 2016 review and update.
The MYCQ regularly reviews the OMR formulas by looking at race results and analysing trends and new technologies to ensure the OMR system is current and as accurate as possible.
As with most handicapping systems, it is not perfect and rather than criticizing the system and the people that administer it we encourage you to become involved in the club and contribute to developing the system.

Festivals are thriving in regional Queensland. Here are some events for your travel bucket list
For vineyard owner Greg Kentish, seeing Queensland's tourism industries bounce back after the COVID-19 pandemic has created a sense of relief.
"We love having tourists and Brisbanites here for weekends, day trips, or however they want to come," he said.
Mr Kentish is among the producers in the heart of southern Queensland's wine country celebrating the region's biennial food and wine festival, Apple and Grape.
"It's a very exciting time for people to come and experience what is our picking and crushing season, so it's an important time of the year," Mr Kentish said.
The 10-day festival concludes this weekend, and according to Southern Queensland Country Tourism (SQCT) boss Peter Homan, the harvest celebration has led to motels and camping spots in Stanthorpe being booked out.
"The majority of visitors are coming out of that south-east Queensland corner, but all the way from right down in Coffs Harbour," he said.
Tourism and Events Queensland said speciality events across the state, including Apple and Grape, helped boost Queensland's economy by $850 million each year.
CEO Patricia O'Callaghan said the plan was to grow that to $2 billion by 2032.
"Events are a huge driver of tourism into Queensland and it's one that has a significant economic contribution," she said.
"But whilst they're [visitors are] here, they're experiencing the destinations and dispersing throughout the state."
With hundreds of thousands of visitors at some events injecting millions into local economies, "these numbers are quite significant," Ms O'Callaghan said.
Here are some ideas if you're keen to jump in and experience a uniquely Queensland festival or event this year.
Stanthorpe Apple and Grape Harvest Festival
February 23–March 3
The Apple and Grape Festival in Stanthorpe concludes this weekend, but not before a final couple of days full of festivities.
The town plays host to busking championships on March 2, while many orchards will be open for apple picking.
A food and wine fiesta will also take place on Saturday.
Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race/Easter in Gladstone
March 28–April 1
The central Queensland harbour city of Gladstone comes to life at Easter for the annual Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race.
The race sets sail from Moreton Bay on March 29, with the first yachts crossing the finish line in Gladstone early the next morning.
The event kicks off a whole Easter celebration in the city, which includes a harbour festival, long lunches and regattas.
March 29–31
Calling all petrolheads, RockyNats is one of Queensland's top car festivals.
The three-day event includes plenty of burnouts and street drag-racing action.
There's also bound to be plenty of mullets.
Beef 2024 – Rockhampton
Beef Week kicks off on May 5 in the central Queensland farming capital.
The week-long celebration of all things beef includes cattle competitions, seminars, cooking demonstrations, special lunches, and live entertainment.
The 2024 event will include the newly introduced M'Eat Street.
The Big Red Bash – Birdsville
Billed as one of the world's most remote music festivals, this event requires festival goers to make their way to the edge of the Simpson Desert in outback Queensland.
While the journey is half the fun, once on site there's plenty of musical acts to keep visitors entertained.
Another popular fixture is the annual Nutbush world record attempt, which peaked with 5,838 participants in 2023.
Boulia Camel Races
The Boulia Camel Races take over the outback town for three days in July.
Organisers say attendees are left in awe as the camels race, leaving a trail of red dust in their wake.
Beyond the races, the event includes live entertainment, food, fireworks and novelty races.
Australian Festival of Chamber Music – Townsville
July 26–August 4
This celebration of chamber music brings together more than 30 events and concerts in tropical Townsville.
Many are free to attend.
Alongside world-renowned musicians, emerging local artists are given the opportunity to shine.
Mt Isa Rodeo
August 8–11
Queensland's premier rodeo event, the Mt Isa Rodeo is the largest in the southern hemisphere.
The four-day event is home to Australia's highest rodeo prize and attracts more than 700 competitors every year.
Organisers say the event is where "the east meets west and man meets beast".
Pacific Airshow – Gold Coast
August 16–18
The clear skies of the Gold Coast are the stage for this adrenaline-pumping aerial event with the best civilian and military aviators from around the world showing off their skills.
The event claims to be the "largest airshow event to ever take place in Australia" with an estimated 250,000 spectators watching on from the beaches of Surfers Paradise.
Hamilton Island Race Week
August 17–24
Queensland's Whitsundays is the stunning backdrop to this world-class sailing event.
For those more inclined to land, there's plenty of onshore events ranging from food markets to cocktail parties.
Gympie Music Muster
August 22–25
This event is unashamedly for the country music fans.
Live acts delight crowds for four days in the Amamoor State Forest, with some of the best-known names in country music taking to the stage.
The muster gives back to the bush communities it champions, returning more than $20 million to community groups and charities since its inception.
Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers
September 13–October 7
Now a month-long event, Queensland's Garden City comes alive in spring for the annual Carnival of Flowers.
The town's historical parks bloom with speciality flower displays, while the Festival of Food and Wine showcases the best produce from across the Darling Downs.
Residents open their home gardens to visitors as part of a region-wide garden competition.
Woodford Folk Festival – Moreton Bay
December 27–January 1
Taking the mantle as Australia's largest outdoor festival, this unique event brings an estimated 132,000 people for a week of camping, community, and arts.
It's best known for its environmentally and philosophical program, with musicians, artists and presenters putting on more than 500 acts.
The village of Woodfordia constructed for the festival lays claims to being Australia's 67th largest town for the duration of the event.
