Dick Weber and I stood on the balcony of a condo overlooking his South Jersey Marina sipping coffee. The morning sun still had some traveling to do before tinting the Cape May Coast Guard’s white buildings that stood off to the east. Sleep hadn’t come easily, as 130 big boats cranked up 260 heavy-iron diesels in preparation for another day of fishing in what has become one of offshore fishing’s richest tournaments – the Mid-Atlantic $500,000.

“Mr. Weber,” I said as I took in his mini maritime kingdom, “you have certainly come a very long way since your days as a charter captain.”

“Those were good days,” replied Weber. “And these are good days, too. It’s all good – I am well and truly blessed.”

That was some years ago, but Dick Weber still has plenty of blessings to count. For example, as one of Ocean Yachts’ longest-standing dealers, Weber recently took ownership of the largest Ocean Yachts has ever built. And from the looks of the interior and the performance, it may also represent the company’s finest offering to date. Weber plans to semiretire aboard the 73-footer, fishing the Bahamas and Caribbean for a while, then taking it on to Magdalena Bay on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, eventually working his way back to New Jersey.

**Performance ** At a fairly high 12-knot trolling speed, the Ocean 73 Super Sport generates considerable surface foam but still trails two distinct trolling alleys for your lures. And with one engine in gear at 650 rpm with the trolling valve engaged, the 73 slow-trolls live baits at 2 knots with an absolutely clear wake.

A 2-foot sea outside Miami’s Government Cut made for a good test of how the 73 would run on an average day of boating. Fully loaded with 2,200 gallons of fuel, another 330 gallons of water and provisions for three months of cruising in the Bahamas, the 73 still took only eight seconds to plane. I’ve run smaller boats with empty tanks that didn’t get up and go like the Ocean 73 got up and went. On top of that, I have to say the steering is like butter – one finger controls any course change you may want.

Somewhat to the chagrin of the factory staff aboard – they hadn’t really put this boat through its paces yet – I backed down at 7.7 knots. A small amount of water came in around the tuna door, but not enough to wet the cockpit deck. With the wheel hard over, the 73 spins quite well. However, add a shot of bow thruster and the boat reacts like a 31-footer. In fact, overall I’d have to say that the Ocean 73 SS reflects the exact opposite of the hackneyed boating writers’ comment about a small boat feeling like a much bigger one. The 73 is a big boat that performs like a much smaller one. About the only performance aspect that lets you know you’re on a 73-footer is a hard-over turn at cruising speed. At 25 knots, the 73 scribed a 180-degree arc in five to six boat lengths.

Caterpillar suggests cruising at 80 percent of engine power output, which equates to 31.4 knots burning 142 gph total. And since this boat performs amazingly well in a head sea, you can readily cruise at that speed straight into 4-footers with nary a care.

Interior Weber and his wife had a big hand in designing the interior of the 73 we tested. “We wanted it to look upscale and simple but fishy and boaty, too,” says Weber. “That’s the way our house is, and that’s how we wanted the boat.” I guess that would explain the lavender theme in the salon.

The galley on board the South Jersey Champion – the name Weber gives all his boats – features a large five-sided island that separates the galley from the salon but leaves the entire space with a much more open feeling. The Webers most often dine buffet style, making the island ideal. A dinette to starboard of the galley seats three or four adults in banquette fashion.

The salon has seating to port, with the wet bar and entertainment center to starboard. Stairs to belowdecks open up to reveal a pump room with a ton of pantry storage. However, I’d think that accessing the pantry from the galley would be more advantageous.

Below, the starboard cabin accommodates the crew in over/under berths. The fo’c’s’le offers a large, oblique, double island berth and Ocean’s signature head and shower in the prow. The other guest cabin provides twin berths. Moving aft, you’ll find the master stateroom beneath the galley amidships, and its full width makes this compartment seem palatial. In fact, the shower is bigger than the one in my home.

Though somewhat less flashy, thanks to the Webers’ input, there’s no mistaking that this interior belongs to an Ocean Yacht. If you’re having a tough time selling your significant other on the idea of a boat, simply take her aboard an Ocean. Problem solved.

**Cockpit ** Another feature on this new Ocean that surprised me: I couldn’t find any lockers under the gunwales. Ocean now builds storage for mops, brushes and gaff handles under the mezzanine seats. Those same seats also provide rod storage for the tackle you aren’t keeping in the rocket launchers on the tower legs or the eight across the back of the flybridge.

Lift-out boxes in the aftermost deck hatches provide storage space for hoses, lines and bumpers. Simply lift the shallow boxes out for access to bilge, rudderposts, et al. In the transom itself, a livewell also doubles as a fish box. But you should put your larger fish in the in-deck fish boxes, one with optional Eskimo ice maker. I’d still love to see some tubes dedicated to storing gaffs and mops.

As you’d expect, the cockpit qualifies as nothing short of huge, with gunwales at midthigh and an offset chair allowing rod tips to reach the corners.

**Flybridge ** I found only one negative on the Ocean 73’s flybridge, so let’s get it out of the way right off the bat. On smaller models, the aft flybridge rail runs along the edge of the access hatch. This larger model’s rail rests several feet farther aft, leaving the hatch as an open hole in the deck. I don’t expect you’ll ever see another 73 without a rail around the hatch for safety, as well as to assist your climb up from the cockpit. I’d personally insist on a rail closer to the hatch.

I found the rest of the flybridge both excellent and remarkable. The excellence stems from the copious storage space here, as well as the almost-360-degree seating arrangement forward of the helm console augmenting the straight settees to port and starboard. Each straight settee boasts a foldaway backrest for rear-facing seating comfort. One remarkable find: Even with no step at the helm, you can still see both bow and stern clearly from the wheel.

Weber recessed Miya Epoch electronic teaser reels into the overhead, though they drop down so as not to require running lines through the hardtop – an excellent innovation that will add life to the reels’ levelwind mechanisms. Future hulls will offer an enclosed bridge with a spiral staircase to the salon if you choose.

Engine Room Ever since my trawler days, I’ve loved engine rooms with standing headroom. The Ocean 73 gives you that and more. You can honestly access everything in this compartment, both inboard and outboard of the engines. You’ll find filters and pumps along the forward bulkhead and generators aft of the engines situated fore and aft rather than athwartships to free up space along the bulkhead.

Weber’s captain opted for smaller-than-usual generators at 15 kW each to free up even more work space in the compartment. Even living aboard, he figures it will be rare that they’ll ever need more than 30 kW of AC power at one time. The generators exhaust through the hull below the waterline for quiet operation. Weber and his crew chose the 60-degree V of the Caterpillars over the 90-degree V of the Detroit 2000 series diesels in an effort to save even more space. The new C32 Cat diesels put out 1,675 hp each. Come early summer, Cat expects its C32A series to debut at 1,800, which may buy you an extra knot or two at top end with no extra weight.

Design and Construction Thankfully, Ocean applies nonskid to the entire foredeck, as well as the side walkways. Admittedly, many owners never venture to the foredeck and prefer a gloss finish because they find it more aesthetically pleasing. But for anyone who has to walk out regularly to anchor or handle dock lines, the nonskid couldn’t be more appreciated. Once out on the foredeck, you’ll notice an unusual stainless-steel plate on the bow. It’s an innovative anchoring arrangement which includes a removable bow pulpit with integral roller that bolts to the bow in a matter of minutes. When not in use, it stows out of sight for a cleaner line to the bow. The huge anchor locker includes a freshwater washdown outlet and built-in hanger for a Danforth-style anchor.

Dave Martin designs all the Oceans, and I must congratulate him. I truly feel this 73 represents the best-running boat Ocean has made to date. It offers a smoother, drier ride, and it handles head seas like a knife through hot butter. If you’re looking for a serious fishing machine with real live-aboard comforts, you’ll do yourself a disservice if you don’t visit your local Ocean dealer.

The Absolute Navetta 73 is a Chic Voyager

I wasn’t expecting the speed.

At first glance, Absolute Yachts’ Navetta 73 looks, well, shippy. Her stout profile and broad shoulders (with an 18-foot-4-inch beam) are indicative of a vessel built for long-distance cruising. And while the 73 is certainly capable of that kind of voyage, with an 800-nautical-mile range at about 9 knots, my eyes grew to saucer size when she hit 26 knots.

Skirting across the Gulf of Napoule off the coast of Cannes, France, my test 73’s 1,000 hp Volvo Penta IPS1350s quickly spooled up to 2,439 rpm. The 57-ton displacement vessel hit that wide-open-throttle speed atop a 3-foot heave. The ride was comfortable, with little roll moment felt on her open flybridge. An optional Seakeeper 16 gyrostabilizer and Volvo Penta’s auto-trim system with ­Interceptor tabs both helped in terms of stability.

She made 21 knots at 2,200 rpm, her standard cruise speed. At this pace, her diesels burned around 73.9 gph, providing a respectable 269-nautical-mile range based on her 1,056-gallon fuel capacity with 10 percent reserve. Her spectrum-spanning performance attributes should appeal to adventurers as well as to yachtsmen who want shiplike lines and feel, plus the ability to go fast when time is short or you just want some wind in your hair.

For those who prefer to keep their coifs just so, a plastic enclosure can button up about two-thirds of the 592-square-foot flybridge space, and owners can heat or air-condition the area. There’s also a Bimini top option to add even more shade. My test boat was open on all sides with a hardtop and retractable roof.

The flybridge is designed for much more than driving from the centerline helm station. This area is set up for alfresco entertaining, with a teak dining table for six to eight guests just abaft the helm and to starboard. A bar across from it has a Vitrifrigo fridge, freezer and ice-maker. A settee for three to four along with two loose chairs abaft the dining area create a conversation nook, and two chaise-style lounges can be placed far aft for catching rays.

It would be easy to spend all day on the flybridge, but equally thoughtful features are in this yacht’s interior spaces too. The most noteworthy include a sliding glass door leading from the covered teak cockpit to the salon. That door opens more than 5 feet wide and has 6-foot-7-inch headroom.

Flow is the word that came to mind as the salon stretched seamlessly from that glass door to the bulkhead just forward of the formal dining table for eight, with the galley beyond the bulkhead. The salon’s 6-foot-11-inch headroom helps with volume, and a white-oak sole adds perceived length to the room. Sole-to-ceiling windows enhance the feeling of spaciousness even more, while cut-down bulwarks increase inbound light and provide great vistas from all points in the salon and dining area.

The galley can be closed off via two pocket doors, one to the enclosed pilothouse and one to the salon’s companionway. Side-deck access is to port for crew to serve meals and drinks without interrupting the soirée.

When it comes to dropping the hook from the Quick windlass and calling it a night in a favorite cove, choosing a stateroom may be the owner’s most difficult decision. Technically, there is one master forward on the 73 with a queen berth, en suite head, double sink and shower stall. The space is bright, thanks to flanking hullside windows that measure 4 feet 7 inches wide by 2 feet 4 inches high. But the full-beam VIP stateroom amidships, with access via a stairway off the salon, could easily be a second master. The VIP has a vanity and office to starboard and, like all three of the other staterooms on board, an en suite head.

The third stateroom, abaft the master and to port, could also be used as a VIP. It has an athwartships queen berth, 6-foot-5-inch headroom and walk-in closets. Across the ­companionway to starboard is the fourth stateroom, with twin berths for the kids.

Throughout the guest areas, there’s a surprising level of elegance, with flourishes that include high-gloss dark-walnut accents, leather furnishings and Calacatta marble.

Outside, the 73 has a voyager’s look, and her build supports her ­aesthetic. Absolute yachts are hand-laid with fiberglass where the builder believes pure strength is required, and compound materials such as Kevlar and carbon fiber are employed in spots where strength with reduced weight is desired. Wood is also used in some stringers.

While the Absolute Navetta 73’s speed and interior style surprised me, her engineering impressed me. Sometimes, creating massive interior volume can make a yacht, well, tall — and in turn, tender, but the 73 is solid ­underfoot. She also is a hybrid, in the sense that she should appeal to long-range cruisers, liveaboards and yachtsmen with a penchant for entertaining lots of friends.

With all that she has going for her, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Absolute ­Navetta 73 soon becomes a familiar sight in a marina near you.

Absolute Yachts 73 Navetta

When technology meets tradition and creativity meets strong personality the Absolute Navetta family is born. For the Italian company, designing and building some of the most sought-after yachts in the world, it is more of an art form than a job. The commitment to excellence and attention to detail can be seen throughout the entire vessel, both inside and out. She gleams with perfection from every angle.

Indeed, Navetta 73 is a unique yacht in her range, which amazes without getting away from the features of the Navetta family, here enhanced through the bigger dimensions. She has more to offer than most yachts in the 80 feet range, but at a 70-foot yacht budget. This rare gem is a dream come true for those sea lovers who respect functionality, new technology, most refined elegance and the highest level of comfort.

As you are walking up the dock and you see her and all her massive glory, the worries seem to fade into thoughts of adventure, splendor and happiness. The only limit on the opportunities with the Absolute 73 Navetta is the limit on the mind of the beholder. A sunset cruise while sipping the finest of champagne and wine leads to a better view than the most beautifully brushed canvas in all of the land.

The simplicity of the 73 Navetta adds to the elegance portrayed not only while at sea but also still on the hook or dock. Minimalistic window design provides an abundance of natural light while adding to that elegance. Beautifully shaped, extra-large panes of glass surround nearly the entire main deck which seems to allow nature to flow uninterrupted.

Starting at the pulpit the lines of this yacht are sharp like an Italian sports car. Dramatic entry angles and the slight sheer form a strong look from the bow. The bow is full of customizable amenities like height adjustable backrests on the sunpad, electric bow magnetized table which is also extensible, and an optional Mediterranean sunshade to allow just enough sun.

The Flybridge is also full of surprises starting with the two sets of entry steps, one from the main helm and the other from the cockpit. Once on the bridge there is an endless 470 square feet of teak with no steps. The supersized wet bar gives ample room for any of the imaginable cocktails and horderves. Sink, grill and shelfing galore make this as good of hang out spot as any. The dinette has an L-shaped couch and four individual chairs for a comfortable meal with up to 8 guests. Another small wet bar counter separates this dinette from the ever-so comfortable couch conveniently placed mid ship on the starboard side adjacent some of the most astounding views to be had. Two customizable and movable sun chairs typically stay aft on the bridge for the perfect rear facing ride. The XXL sunroof will allow the sun to pour over all of the guests.

The helm on the flybridge is aesthetically pleasing and most importantly functional. A dashboard that is ergonomic and customizable is what is found at the helm on the bridge of the Absolute 73 Navetta. Even the wind deflector is height-adjustable for maximum comfort. Snug feel at the helm is due to the luxury sports car feeling seats.

As elegance is at the heart of the Absolute 73 Navetta, it makes sense that the elegance is continued throughout the main deck. The massive windows, that are oh so beautiful from the outside, allow phenomenal views and natural light to escalate into the salon. A 360 degree view with cameras makes docking from the lower helm quite simple.

The lower helm inside the Absolute 73 Navetta may very well have been designed by space shuttle engineers because while sitting at the helm, behind the wheel, in an enclosed bridge, it is hard not to imagine a countdown to liftoff as the turbos spool up. There are nearly 10 displays to digitally monitor everything going on without the captain ever having to look more than 45 degrees away. The Volvo IPS Pod system has been finely tuned with the joystick so driving in close quarter is still fun.  

Sliding doors separate the galley from the salon, the salon from the entrance master stateroom and the galley from the lower helm. This adds to the overall massive feel of the 73 Navetta. The salon has multiple sets of customizable furniture so the limit is reflected by only imagination. Through the sliding door and down a few steps, oasis awaits. This private Master Stateroom has views and amenities that are found in the most expensive rooms on a cruise ship. The real queen bed is not only long enough for tall boaters but is located in the center of this cabin for the best views out those enormous windows. Storage on both sides of the bed and a walk-in closet provide ample room for the entire wardrobe if needed. The private master head is an architectural feat in itself being at the forward most part of the bow while still allowing for a stand-up shower, his and her vanities, a toilet and a bidet.

There won’t be a complaint from the guests who get to enjoy the VIP suite. This mid ship cabin has near as much real-estate as the Master cabin with the head broken into three sections on the port side. The closet still gives plenty of room for a week’s worth of clothing. Up to four other guests are able to tag along for overnight hauls in the guest and mid-ship cabins. The guest is fitted with a full-sized bed where the mid-ship has two twins, perfect for the kids. Navetta 73 by Italian yacht brand Absolute Yachts

The Navetta 73 is a 22m luxurious motor yacht with a top speed of 26 knots and a cruising speed of 22 knots, powered by two Volvo Penta IPS 1359 with a power of 1,000 hp each. Her exterior design reminds a bit of a masculine explorer style. Thanks to her functional design, the yacht offers a spacious sun deck with helm station (flybridge), a bar, dining, lounge and sunbathing area.

On the lower deck are five cabins. Between the bow and engine room are four guest cabins. One full-beam double cabin in the bow, another full-beam double cabin amidships and two smaller cabins. One further double and a twin bed cabin. The crew cabin is aft.

The bravest design yet from the Italian yard, the Absolute Navetta 73 has paid dividends in terms of space, light and fuel efficiency

From down on the pontoon, it seems huge, inelegant and angular. Moored stern to the quay, it appears roomy and inviting. Seen out on the water, it looks purposeful and businesslike. There is no angle from which the new Absolute Navetta 73 can be described as pretty, but I doubt the yard’s design department is losing much sleep over that.

Absolute has always enjoyed ploughing its own individual furrow and in the 15 years of its existence, it has created a unique persona for itself as a company whose boats are often unusual and sometimes brilliant, but never boring.

The Absolute Navetta 73 is not an especially beamy boat for its length, but with its massive square stern, it looks like it is. That impression is heightened by a huge full-beam flybridge, which completely shades the cockpit and, for most of their length, the side decks too.

It was unveiled at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September 2017 and sat among the gleaming, sleek and delicate-looking boats like a bouncer surrounded by bridesmaids. Any larger-than-life exterior is, naturally, built around an equally voluminous interior.

The Absolute Navetta 73’s hull carries its beam well forward, at both gunwale and waterline, and with the engineroom bulkhead situated some way aft of midships, there is plenty of room for accommodation.

The layout is unusual. The master cabin sits forward on its own level, down six steps from the main deck but significantly higher than the lower deck – a decision forced on the designers by the limited space available down in that narrow bow.

So it has flat floors, a spacious head and shower compartment behind glass double doors in the bows, and gigantic rectangular windows. A properly usable walk-in wardrobe and plenty of ancillary lockers and drawers provide plenty of stowage for clothes, albeit with a lack of full-length hanging space.

The bed is enormous and in common with all the guest cabins, headroom is a generous 6ft 6in (1.98m). It seemed perverse not to fit under-berth drawers as well – why ever not? – but the reason for that became plain soon enough.

Absolute Navetta 68: Italian trawler range to grow again with Cannes debut

Down on the lower deck, which is reached via the companionway on the starboard side of the saloon, the midships VIP cabin can’t quite compete with the owner’s, but it nevertheless shares a luxurious sense of space.

Placing the sink under the port-side window and putting the shower and heads in separate compartments either side of it, clearly places a higher premium on light and space below decks than on keeping the plumbing hidden from view, which evinces a proper sense of priorities.

Space to spare

At first, the port VIP cabin hardly seems to merit such a title, but slide open that forward door and it turns out to have a vast dressing room, down two steps. Although it’s tucked into the void space beneath the master cabin’s double berth (aha!), it still has more than 6ft (1.85m) of headroom.

This area obviously doesn’t show up on the layout diagram but I can assure you it’s real, and with shelving, lockers and hanging space, it has much to recommend it.

The fourth cabin is a twin berth on the starboard side with just a hanging locker in which to stow your stuff, but the beds are a full 6ft 6in (1.98m) long. If you asked nicely, the shipyard might fit a door to provide it with ensuite access to the day head at the bottom of the companionway.

That vertical windscreen isn’t just purposeful-looking and easy to see through – it also allows the wheelhouse to be set pretty far forward, without encroaching on the foredeck. This, of course, leaves plenty of space on the rest of the main deck, while big side windows ensure the saloon feels as spacious as it looks, even while sacrificing width to the Absolute Navetta 73’s excellent side decks. These are 18in (46cm) wide and secure behind a guardrail height of 32in (81cm).

Set between saloon and wheelhouse, the galley has its own access to the side deck and wheelhouse, while the sliding door to starboard means that crew and guest areas can be separated if necessary.

It is rather long and thin, but well endowed with refrigeration, freezer and stowage space. Drawers and lockers for crockery and glassware can be found in the lobby outside. The wheelhouse has its own flybridge companionway for rapid access to the upper helm, and is also reasonably well placed to use the galley’s door out to the side deck.

If you do cruise with crew, you shouldn’t have too many complaints about the cabin in the stern. On our test boat, it was equipped with a single berth – more can be fitted on request – a separate head and shower compartment, a convertible dinette, a washer-dryer, some useful lockers and extra fridge and freezer space. Headroom comes in at 6ft 7in (2.01m).

Various choices of interior finish are available. The boat exhibited at Cannes had Minotti furniture inside and Paola Lenti chairs up on the flybridge , with dark gloss walnut and elm veneers used throughout the interior, floors of oak, fabric-clad bulkheads and leather and lacquer trim.

Fitted as standard, the Absolute Navetta 73’s magnetic surfaces are a fun party piece: both the dining table and the flybridge table are constructed with a thin steel sheet beneath the veneer so that the yacht’s compatible wine glasses – each with a small magnet set into the base – don’t fall over and smash.

Like all of its Absolute stablemates since 2008, the Navetta is designed solely around Volvo’s IPS system. It might seem a surprisingly big and weighty craft for pod drives and indeed, its only engine option is the largest available, the 1,000hp IPS1350, which compares with the 1,400hp or 1,550hp units that you might expect to find on more conventional shaftdrive yachts of this size.

Performance

With its plumb bow and very fine entry, the Absolute Navetta 73’s hull shape has a faintly Edwardian look about it, although the naval architects of 100 years ago would never have tried to match the Navetta’s ample bulk with any ideas of high performance – which, by the standards of those times, the Navetta possesses in abundance.

As an understanding of planing hull characteristics began to mature in design circles during the 1930s and ’40s, it was realised that simply marrying a knife-like bow with load- bearing midships and aft sections was not the ideal compromise.

If the deadrise angle changed too abruptly, the resultant impact zone could pound both the boat and its crew to pieces, as many a young seaman in the torpedo boats of the time could testify.

Of course, the Absolute Navetta 73 is not designed to achieve the 40 knots or more of the plywood navy, but to ensure a soft ride in a head sea, its deadrise still decreases at a fairly restrained rate, as seen in the line of the chine, which starts high and proud on the stem and meets the waterline around a third of the way back to the transom as the bottom flattens out, quite gradually, to a shallow 7.4° right aft.

Another potential side effect of a superfine entry is the deluge of spray, which it throws up at speed, and to counter this, the Absolute Navetta 73 has a broad flat at the chine that continues right around the stem, helping keep the sea where it belongs.

As so often seems to be the case whenever there is an intriguing and unusual hull to test, conditions on the day were about as challenging as the Round Pond in Kensington Gardens. A light breeze could lift no more than a modest chop on the waters of the Baie de Cannes. It would have been fun in a RIB, but the Absolute Navetta 73 simply didn’t notice.

Acceleration was steady and linear with no discernible ‘hump’ as the broad, flat lifting surfaces did their thing. The boat simply climbed out of the hole and kept going, longitudinal trim increasing gradually once hull speed was exceeded and reaching 5° at our maximum of 25.6 knots.

Acceleration had a surprising urge to it. A low planing speed can be useful in a cruising yacht, as it allows you to make progress even if conditions have forced you to ease back on the throttles. The Absolute Navetta 73’s flat aft sections kept it securely on the plane at just 14 knots – although the massive wake spreading out astern was a quick antidote to any delusions of hydrodynamic efficiency.

Of course, our wake came in useful for trying out that fine entry, which sliced through it like butter with little vertical acceleration and no discernible check on our progress. It felt quite impressive. We kept the Seakeeper gyro stabiliser switched off and the trim tabs fully up, and the Absolute Navetta 73 handled quite conventionally, turning with a slight inward heel and proving more nimble and enjoyable to drive than it looks.

At first glance, it’s clear the Absolute Navetta 73 is offering something out of the ordinary. You don’t build a boat with such attention-grabbing looks if you want it to blend in. And the shipyard is right to demand your attention, because this is an innovative craft which is worth seeking out for lots of reasons, especially the way in which the forward accommodation spaces are handled. The master cabin being on its own deck level creates lots of usable space below without the need for a separate, raised wheelhouse. Necessity is the mother of invention: the bow’s shape forced the designers to raise the level of the forward suite, and their solution works brilliantly. The Navetta also has an effective hull design, which is notable not just for the way its razor-sharp bow slices through a chop, but because its acreage of flat lifting surfaces helps make it more fuel efficient than most of its counterparts. The low drag IPS pods also play a part. Packing less power, the Absolute Navetta 73 might not have the top speed of a Princess 75 but from tickover to 25 knots or so, it is burning much less fuel. That just leaves its looks. But beauty isn’t always an absolute. As Ayckbourn put it in The Norman Conquests, “Anybody I love is automatically beautiful.”

Created out of custom aluminum alloy, she is an outstanding island hopper and coastal cruiser.  Offered for sale by her second owners, True Love represents a unique opportunity for an experienced cruiser who can appreciate the outstanding value she represents. It may seem difficult to establish value for a one-of-a-king original, but one factual measure is the price she cost to build new, which was over six million dollars in 2005!

The first owners were an experienced cruising couple who owned several sailboats and purchased two Grand Banks trawlers before deciding to order one final yacht that would satisfy their desires for the ideal cruising boat.  It had to be appealing, practical and above all, easy to operate and maintain.   They studied the trawler models marketed by the leading yacht builders but could not find anything suitable.  They came to the realization that a stock boat would not work.  They were in the fortunate position to afford a custom new build which ended up being their best solution.  They engaged renowned naval architect, Gregory Marshall, to work out the profile and layout that they wanted.  With designs completed, they interviewed several builders in Canada (their home country) before selecting Park Isle Marine in British Columbia for construction.

For the size and performance they were looking for, it was determined that aluminum alloy construction would give them the strength and weight they needed. Their boat savvy and marine trade experienced son was hired as project manager to oversee his parents’ ambitious goal.  A very positive collaborative effort was commenced in 2004.

Every aspect of the boat was thoroughly researched with the goal of achieving their “perfect floating home”. The design was enhanced by creating a bill of materials that specified the best available, industry leading equipment. The launch was a huge success, a beautiful build completed with compliments and congratulations all around. Then the vessel was shipped to Florida for test trips and a Bahamas cruise.  Unfortunately, one aspect was a huge disappointment.  The original concept specified a diesel electric propulsion package which, unfortunately, was never able to meet the performance promises.

The final solution after many trial runs and conferences was to start over.  Two Scania engines (branded Yanmar) were installed by Deltaville Boatyard in Virginia.  The propulsion change meant a two-year delay in their ability to go out cruising and even though the build year is listed as 2005, the owners were not able to enjoy True Love (originally called Retired Sailor III ) until 2010.  After several years of very enjoyable cruising, they were satisfied and had accomplished their objectives successfully. With time catching up, they completed their boating adventures and decided to sell their beloved boat.  She was listed for sale for three and a half million dollars in 2015.

The owners of Deltaville Boatyard were her custodians and were also granted cruising privileges, a win/win situation for remote ownership and ultimately an arrangement was made to transfer possession to the people who knew this boat the best.

True Love is best summarized in one word “innovative”. She boasts a collection of best-in-class features and equipment.  A comprehensive list of these selections is included here to help you understand the thought and attention to detail that went into this project.  Reading through this write up will acquaint you with the thinking and detail, along with the time and effort that defined this build.  However, nothing will tell her story better than actually getting aboard to see for yourself.

The large swim platform aft serves as the most convenient access from floating dock and by tender. You can also board the main deck (double walk around) of True Love using the Marquipt removable stairway through four gates in the side decks.

SWIM PLATFORM

A great first impression!  You will appreciate her dock-sized swim platform for easy boarding.  You can adjust the safety rail and detachable swim ladder. The large, hinged storage lockers are conveniently installed outboard in the transom where they secure fresh water hoses, shore power and assorted miscellaneous gear. The centerline promenade stairwell is wide with large steps that easily transition to the aft deck cockpit.  The stairwell includes a hot and cold freshwater hand shower and has two opening port lights for the aft stateroom.

True Love’s covered aft deck is ideal for entertaining and provides an incredible view of your surroundings. You are five feet above the waterline which make this a very dry and secure boat. There are portable chairs and tables for relaxing as well as storage locker. There is a sink, ice maker and refrigerator as well as a sidebar beverage dispensing system. A safety gate is located at the top of the stairwell to fence in the cockpit and swings open for access to the swim platform.  You can enter the saloon through the double French doors or go forward along either side deck.  There are two boarding doors aft and moving along the side you will see engine room ventilation grills and fuel fill gauges.

The foredeck was designed to provide a huge open space with high bulwarks and tall aluminum tubular railing for safety. The anchor deck is a raised stage with the windlass and chain lockers.  The dual anchor well is angled forward to drain the mess from anchor wash down. There are two anchors ready to deploy with chain stoppers and cleats. The large deep chain lockers have a separate shelf aft for the Glendinning shore power retrievers and fresh water hoses. There are rollers and cleats for dock lines as well.   Along the side decks are fender storage racks, cleats and freeing ports.  The sole is durable Marine 2000 non-slip.  Aft, below the reverse raked windows is a huge, hinged storage container for stowing lines and shore power attachments.

MAIN SALOON:

Entering the saloon from the raised aft deck through the water tight glass French doors you will be impressed with the inviting layout and wide-open vistas outboard providing a great sense of space. There are large opening windows, and the beautiful cherry wood is accented appropriately with warm colored ultra-suede wall covering. The cork flooring adds a practical and decorative touch that also has sound insulation advantages. The saloon was designed for both lounging and dining with a generous gathering area featuring a comfortable upholstered couch and matching arm chairs which are dogged down. There is an innovative high low coffee/dining table which can seat eight. An entertainment center with flat screen television is located in the aft starboard cabinetry with controls for the upper and main deck speakers.

There are two stairwells.  The forward (starboard amidships) leads up to the flybridge and below to the owner stateroom, utility and third cabin. The aft stairwell leads down to the full beam guest stateroom and engine room.

This stateroom has a single bed size settee and a hinged single Murphy bed in the bulkhead with   a small desk with drawers below. Primarily used as a den with couch and desk it has the convenience of quickly converting to a comfortable cabin. There are storage lockers on the outboard wall and hidden ones behind the settee cushions. The head and shower are ensuite.   This cabin would make an excellent captain’s quarters.

OWNER STATEROOM- FORWARD

The original owners chose the area below the foredeck as their stateroom because of the extra light from the three hatches and the ability to hear the motion of the bow. Closing the door from the Utility landing, this is a spacious private stateroom with ensuite head and shower. For sleeping there are two three quarter size beds outboard. A wide centerline walkway is covered with a rug. The cork flooring has an innovative locking system that covers several large storage compartments in the bilge area, containing plastic bins. The bins hold extensive spare parts and tools with an estimated replacement value of $10,000.00. There is a complete inventory sheet of contents. There is a floor to ceiling shoe locker to starboard as you enter. There are his and hers hanging lockers with a handy lowering bar system for convenient hanging of short items above the bureaus, as well as a full-length hanging locker.

VIP GUEST STATEROOM – AFT:

This is a unique layout that was a special requirement for the original owners who loved family style cruising. Located underneath the aft deck is a true full beam stateroom with large queen-sized beds port and starboard and an ensuite shower and head. Between the beds and aft is the bureau with a large countertop and several drawers underneath. The bureau cabinetry is easily removed to allow access to the watertight “Tiller Flats” area and the steering gear.

ENGINE ROOM:

This “stand up” engine room is something you would hope to find on a much larger yacht.  The importance of installing reliable gear that is easy to access and service has always been the priority. You enter through a Diamond Sea Glaze door with viewing window. The engine room is easy to move around in and has railing inboard of the engines for hand support. The sure-footed flooring locks in place. The centerline walk way enables instant access forward to the stabilizers and watermaker.  The two generators are installed aft.  There are three fuel tanks, two outboard and one beneath the sole. Aft is an electrical panel with breakers and spare fuses. Each raw water system has a separate through hull for intake. A unique discharge water sea chest returns overboard. The Delta T ventilation system moves a massive amount of air. For safety there is a fire suppression bottle.  There is even an emergency escape hatch with built-in steps, and there is also a signal alert red light on flybridge to notify crew if needed.

The flybridge stairs from the main deck level below lead to a sliding door with screen, which secures the interior living areas from the upper deck. This top deck is all on one level with the area forward of the mast enclosed with clear Lexan panels. The side panels are mounted on separate tracks allowing them to be opened independently or they can be removed and stored in vinyl bags. This area has proven to be the most popular area of the boat, whether underway or at anchor and can be temperature controlled. Centered forward is the helm station which has all the necessary nav /com electronics easily reached from the two-seater Stidd helm bench. Below the console is storage space for life jackets etc. and there is a movable chart box on top. The crew enjoys the forward-facing seating port and starboard. For meals there is a U-shaped seating area with a drop-leaf table. The aluminum hardtop has opening hatches giving extra lighting and ventilation. The flybridge and boat deck are divided by the mast which has a clever lowering apparatus for powering under low bridges and easy access to the mast head electronics. One of the highlights is the built-in dumbwaiter from the galley which allows the easy delivery of food and drinks between levels.

SOME HISTORY:

True Love was delivered to her original owners in May 2006 in British Columbia, Canada. After initial sea trials, shake downs and commissioning in the San Juan Islands she was transported as cargo to Fort Lauderdale, FL for extensive review of the diesel electric propulsion.  After trials, it was determined that the diesel electric package was not going to live up to the expectations and it was agreed to move her north to Virginia for an extensive retrofit at one of the best boat yards in the US, Deltaville Boatyard. The owner of the yard, Keith Ruse, took on the project with great care and the owners monitored the progress which ultimately took 2 years to complete. Marine industry expert, Steve D’Antonio, was hired as a consultant for the project and helped oversee the transition.

In April of 2010 the new and improved Retired Sailor III was re-launched and finally began her

True Love is a performance semi-displacement trawler motor yacht that will appeal to discriminating buyers who may also be considering comparable quality series-built brands such as Fleming, Marlow, Offshore, Hampton, Ocean Alexander, and Outer Reef.

Created out of custom aluminum alloy, she is an outstanding island hopper and coastal cruiser.  Offered for sale by her second owners, True Love represents a unique opportunity for an experienced cruiser who can appreciate the outstanding value she represents. It may seem difficult to establish value for a one-of-a-king original, but one factual measure is the price she cost to build new, which was over six million dollars in 2005!

The first owners were an experienced cruising couple who owned several sailboats and purchased two Grand Banks trawlers before deciding to order one final yacht that would satisfy their desires for the ideal cruising boat.  It had to be appealing, practical and above all, easy to operate and maintain.   They studied the trawler models marketed by the leading yacht builders but could not find anything suitable.  They came to the realization that a stock boat would not work.  They were in the fortunate position to afford a custom new build which ended up being their best solution.  They engaged renowned naval architect, Gregory Marshall, to work out the profile and layout that they wanted.  With designs completed, they interviewed several builders in Canada (their home country) before selecting Park Isle Marine in British Columbia for construction.

For the size and performance they were looking for, it was determined that aluminum alloy construction would give them the strength and weight they needed. Their boat savvy and marine trade experienced son was hired as project manager to oversee his parents’ ambitious goal.  A very positive collaborative effort was commenced in 2004.

Every aspect of the boat was thoroughly researched with the goal of achieving their “perfect floating home”. The design was enhanced by creating a bill of materials that specified the best available, industry leading equipment. The launch was a huge success, a beautiful build completed with compliments and congratulations all around. Then the vessel was shipped to Florida for test trips and a Bahamas cruise.  Unfortunately, one aspect was a huge disappointment.  The original concept specified a diesel electric propulsion package which, unfortunately, was never able to meet the performance promises.

The final solution after many trial runs and conferences was to start over.  Two Scania engines (branded Yanmar) were installed by Deltaville Boatyard in Virginia.  The propulsion change meant a two-year delay in their ability to go out cruising and even though the build year is listed as 2005, the owners were not able to enjoy True Love (originally called Retired Sailor III ) until 2010.  After several years of very enjoyable cruising, they were satisfied and had accomplished their objectives successfully. With time catching up, they completed their boating adventures and decided to sell their beloved boat.  She was listed for sale for three and a half million dollars in 2015.

The owners of Deltaville Boatyard were her custodians and were also granted cruising privileges, a win/win situation for remote ownership and ultimately an arrangement was made to transfer possession to the people who knew this boat the best.

True Love is best summarized in one word “innovative”. She boasts a collection of best-in-class features and equipment.  A comprehensive list of these selections is included here to help you understand the thought and attention to detail that went into this project.  Reading through this write up will acquaint you with the thinking and detail, along with the time and effort that defined this build.  However, nothing will tell her story better than actually getting aboard to see for yourself.

The large swim platform aft serves as the most convenient access from floating dock and by tender. You can also board the main deck (double walk around) of True Love using the Marquipt removable stairway through four gates in the side decks.

SWIM PLATFORM

A great first impression!  You will appreciate her dock-sized swim platform for easy boarding.  You can adjust the safety rail and detachable swim ladder. The large, hinged storage lockers are conveniently installed outboard in the transom where they secure fresh water hoses, shore power and assorted miscellaneous gear. The centerline promenade stairwell is wide with large steps that easily transition to the aft deck cockpit.  The stairwell includes a hot and cold freshwater hand shower and has two opening port lights for the aft stateroom.

True Love’s covered aft deck is ideal for entertaining and provides an incredible view of your surroundings. You are five feet above the waterline which make this a very dry and secure boat. There are portable chairs and tables for relaxing as well as storage locker. There is a sink, ice maker and refrigerator as well as a sidebar beverage dispensing system. A safety gate is located at the top of the stairwell to fence in the cockpit and swings open for access to the swim platform.  You can enter the saloon through the double French doors or go forward along either side deck.  There are two boarding doors aft and moving along the side you will see engine room ventilation grills and fuel fill gauges.

The foredeck was designed to provide a huge open space with high bulwarks and tall aluminum tubular railing for safety. The anchor deck is a raised stage with the windlass and chain lockers.  The dual anchor well is angled forward to drain the mess from anchor wash down. There are two anchors ready to deploy with chain stoppers and cleats. The large deep chain lockers have a separate shelf aft for the Glendinning shore power retrievers and fresh water hoses. There are rollers and cleats for dock lines as well.   Along the side decks are fender storage racks, cleats and freeing ports.  The sole is durable Marine 2000 non-slip.  Aft, below the reverse raked windows is a huge, hinged storage container for stowing lines and shore power attachments.

MAIN SALOON:

Entering the saloon from the raised aft deck through the water tight glass French doors you will be impressed with the inviting layout and wide-open vistas outboard providing a great sense of space. There are large opening windows, and the beautiful cherry wood is accented appropriately with warm colored ultra-suede wall covering. The cork flooring adds a practical and decorative touch that also has sound insulation advantages. The saloon was designed for both lounging and dining with a generous gathering area featuring a comfortable upholstered couch and matching arm chairs which are dogged down. There is an innovative high low coffee/dining table which can seat eight. An entertainment center with flat screen television is located in the aft starboard cabinetry with controls for the upper and main deck speakers.

There are two stairwells.  The forward (starboard amidships) leads up to the flybridge and below to the owner stateroom, utility and third cabin. The aft stairwell leads down to the full beam guest stateroom and engine room.

Located forward along the port side deck there are two opposing L shaped Corian counters, with a spill lip all around, making this a marvelous area for preparing meals. The counter surface area is impressive.  Four swivel chairs are positioned along the outside counter for dining. There are ample drawers below and lockers above.  Below counter appliances include a microwave, sink and trash compactor. The four-burner electric cook top is divided by an electric BBQ with an exhaust hood above. One of the highlights is the custom designed dumbwaiter for easy delivery of food and drinks to the flybridge upper deck.

The forward lower-level deck begins with the Utility room at the base of the stairs that begin at the saloon / galley intersection. Across to port is the third cabin (office/den) and the owners’ stateroom is located towards the bow.

UTILITY/LAUNDRY ROOM

The forward stairs lead down to a large utility room that connects to the port guest cabin and owner stateroom forward.  There is a covered sink, a top loading chest freezer and a Miele clothes washer and dryer. There are sliding locker doors outboard for additional storage. Opening portlights provide additional ventilation. The stairs lift to reveal the central vacuum canister, a safe and extra storage space.

There are storage lockers on the outboard wall and hidden ones behind the settee cushions. The head and shower are ensuite.   This cabin would make an excellent captain’s quarters.

OWNER STATEROOM- FORWARD

The original owners chose the area below the foredeck as their stateroom because of the extra light from the three hatches and the ability to hear the motion of the bow. Closing the door from the Utility landing, this is a spacious private stateroom with ensuite head and shower. For sleeping there are two three quarter size beds outboard. A wide centerline walkway is covered with a rug. The cork flooring has an innovative locking system that covers several large storage compartments in the bilge area, containing plastic bins. The bins hold extensive spare parts and tools with an estimated replacement value of $10,000.00. There is a complete inventory sheet of contents. There is a floor to ceiling shoe locker to starboard as you enter. There are his and hers hanging lockers with a handy lowering bar system for convenient hanging of short items above the bureaus, as well as a full-length hanging locker.

The aft lower-level deck has a curved stairway from the aft port corner of the saloon.  The landing at the base of the stairs allows you to go forward to the engine room or aft to the full beam VIP guest stateroom. 

VIP GUEST STATEROOM – AFT:

This is a unique layout that was a special requirement for the original owners who loved family style cruising. Located underneath the aft deck is a true full beam stateroom with large queen-sized beds port and starboard and an ensuite shower and head. Between the beds and aft is the bureau with a large counter top and several drawers underneath. The bureau cabinetry is easily removed to allow access to the watertight “Tiller Flats” area and the steering gear.

ENGINE ROOM:

This “stand up” engine room is something you would hope to find on a much larger yacht.  The importance of installing reliable gear that is easy to access and service has always been the priority. You enter through a Diamond Sea Glaze door with viewing window. The engine room is easy to move around in and has railing inboard of the engines for hand support. The sure-footed flooring locks in place. The centerline walk way enables instant access forward to the stabilizers and watermaker.  The two generators are installed aft.  There are three fuel tanks, two outboard and one beneath the sole. Aft is an electrical panel with breakers and spare fuses. Each raw water system has a separate through hull for intake. A unique discharge water sea chest returns overboard. The Delta T ventilation system moves a massive amount of air. For safety there is a fire suppression bottle.  There is even an emergency escape hatch with built-in steps, and there is also a signal alert red light on flybridge to notify crew if needed.

The flybridge stairs from the main deck level below lead to a sliding door with screen, which secures the interior living areas from the upper deck. This top deck is all on one level with the area forward of the mast enclosed with clear Lexan panels. The side panels are mounted on separate tracks allowing them to be opened independently or they can be removed and stored in vinyl bags. This area has proven to be the most popular area of the boat, whether underway or at anchor and can be temperature controlled. Centered forward is the helm station which has all the necessary nav /com electronics easily reached from the two-seater Stidd helm bench. Below the console is storage space for life jackets etc. and there is a movable chart box on top. The crew enjoys the forward-facing seating port and starboard. For meals there is a U-shaped seating area with a drop-leaf table. The aluminum hardtop has opening hatches giving extra lighting and ventilation. The flybridge and boat deck are divided by the mast which has a clever lowering apparatus for powering under low bridges and easy access to the mast head electronics. One of the highlights is the built-in dumbwaiter from the galley which allows the easy delivery of food and drinks between levels.

The area between the flybridge and boat deck is designed as open space for sunning, exercising or just relaxing. There are legacy bike mounts (no bicycles included). Plasteak flooring provides a finished and practical surface.

SOME HISTORY:

True Love was delivered to her original owners in May 2006 in British Columbia, Canada. After initial sea trials, shake downs and commissioning in the San Juan Islands she was transported as cargo to Fort Lauderdale, FL for extensive review of the diesel electric propulsion.  After trials, it was determined that the diesel electric package was not going to live up to the expectations and it was agreed to move her north to Virginia for an extensive retrofit at one of the best boat yards in the US, Deltaville Boatyard. The owner of the yard, Keith Ruse, took on the project with great care and the owners monitored the progress which ultimately took 2 years to complete. Marine industry expert, Steve D’Antonio, was hired as a consultant for the project and helped oversee the transition.

In April of 2010 the new and improved Retired Sailor III was re-launched and finally began her cruising career. In her early active years, she cruised well over 10,000 miles travelling from Virginia to the Bahamas and Turks. HULL CONSTRUCTION:

Most production trawlers marketed to the public take advantage of the simplicity of duplicating sister ships through the use of fiberglass construction.  Provided the design is well founded and the tooling is well made, the builder can offer a series of hulls that are uniform in construction and the manufacturing process is more streamlined and faster to crank out boats.  There is an argument to be made for building trawlers out of metal – with steel and aluminum being the preferred materials. For a full displacement yacht where weight is less critical, steel is more popular. True Love was constructed using aluminum alloy for better strength to weight ratios and to keep her lighter to gain more speed.  The entire design was first computer modeled (at significant expense) and these precise dimensions enabled the aluminum to be cut to exact specifications then welded together.  The initial frames were set up to develop a robust hull form.

Army will present Purple Heart to veteran 73 years after he was wounded in Korean War

After 73 years and a long fight with the Army, a Korean War veteran from Minnesota who was wounded in combat is set to finally get his Purple Heart

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- After 73 years and a long fight with the U.S. Army, a Korean War veteran from Minnesota who was wounded in combat was set to finally get his Purple Heart medal on Friday.

The Army notified Earl Meyer, 96, of St. Peter, last month that it had granted him a Purple Heart, which honors service members wounded or killed in combat. Meyer, who still has shrapnel in his thigh that continues to cause him occasional pain, was scheduled to receive it in a ceremony at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.

An Army review board had rejected Meyer’s application several times due to a lack of paperwork, but it reversed course after a campaign by his three daughters and attorney. U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota also intervened on his behalf along with the service’s top noncommissioned officer, the sergeant major of the Army. A federal judge ordered the review board to take another look.

Meyer’s case showcases the challenges for wounded veterans to get medals they’ve earned when the fog of war, the absence of records and the passage of time make it challenging to produce proof.

“Seventy-three years, yeah. That’s a long time all right. ... I didn’t think they would go for it,” Meyer said in an interview after he got the news last month.

Klobuchar will be one of the dignitaries at the ceremony, while one of her former aides who worked on the case will sing the national anthem, said Meyer's daughter, Sandy Baker, of New Buffalo, Michigan.

Sgt. Maj. of the Army Michael Weimer said he wouldn't be able to attend, but he sent a latter of gratitude for Meyer's “selfless service and dedication.” And in a handwritten addition at the bottom of the letter Weimer said: “Thank you for not giving up on us! Long overdue!”

Weimer will send two command sergeant majors from the Army National Guard in his place, Baker said.

Few men in Meyer's unit who witnessed the mortar attack in 1951 survived. Only a few members of his platoon made it out unharmed. He didn’t even realize at first that he had been wounded. He said he thinks the medic who treated him on the battlefield was killed before he could file the paperwork. And he wasn’t thinking then about a medal anyway — he just wanted to survive.

When the Army denied Meyer’s first applications for the medal, it said his documentation was insufficient. Klobuchar’s office helped him obtain additional documents and an Army review board finally concluded last month that the new evidence “establishes beyond reasonable doubt that the applicant was wounded in action in early June 1951.”

The board cited records from the Department of Veterans Affairs, where doctors concluded the shrapnel in his thigh had to be from a combat injury. The board also cited a recent memo from Weimer, who said he believed Meyer’s account was accurate, and that his medal request deserved another review.
