How Taylor Swift subtly addresses her iconic sad boat photo on 1989 (Taylor's Version)

You've heard of the Sad Keanu meme , but have you heard of Sad Taylor?

Longtime Swifties will recall a photo that made the rounds online in 2013 (below), featuring Taylor Swift sitting glumly by herself on a boat in the Virgin Islands wearing a blue dress and black sunglasses. According to reports at the time , Swift and Harry Styles had been vacationing together, got into a disagreement, and broke up, with said photo capturing her leaving the trip alone. (It all worked out for Swift, though, who would go on to create 1989 , her second record to win the coveted Grammy for Album of the Year.)

While the music video for the 1989 song "Out of the Woods" featured Swift in a blue dress, leading some to speculate if it was the dress or perhaps an allusion to it, she's never overtly addressed the "sad boat photo" moment in her music... until now.

On the just-released re-recording of the album, 1989 (Taylor's Version) , the all-new vault track "Is It Over Now?" contains a fairly obvious nod to the alleged incident with the lyrics, "Blue dress / On a boat / Your new girl / Is my clone." (Fans have also pointed out that the latter half of the lyric seems like a companion or response to Styles' song "From the Dining Table," which includes the lyrics, "Woke up the girl who looked just like you / I almost said your name.")

"Is It Over Now?" is a breakup song from the perspective of a narrator wondering exactly when a doomed relationship ended (while also getting in a few good jabs at the ex, naturally). It seems to include several other references to Styles, including that infamous alleged snowmobile accident in 2012 , lending credence to the theory that it could be about the former couple and their ill-fated trip to the Caribbean — and by extension, yes, that sadly hilarious photo.

If "Is It Over Now?" is a vault track new to most listeners' ears, it was technically written back around the time the rest of 1989 was. Swift and Styles have since moved on. They appeared to have no bad blood when they were seen chatting it up and applauding each other at the 2021 Grammys, and then fist-bumping at the 2023 ceremony, much to fans' delight. The two globe-conquering pop stars would probably laugh about it all today.

Taylor Swift famously left on boat after explosive Harry Styles vacation break up

A photo of Taylor Swift leaving her romantic holiday with boyfriend at the time Harry Styles has resurfaced in 2022.

The pair dated for a few months from late 2012 to early 2013. They were first photographed together in December 2012 in New York’s Central Park, but things quickly turned sour between them.

Harry and Taylor went on a New Year getaway to the Virgin Islands and had a huge bust up which resulted in the Blank Space singer travelling home on her own.

She left the vacation a boat, and a paparazzi photo of her has gone down in history as one of the most hilariously sad pictures of all time.

Taylor and Harry broke up on holiday

The two musicians famously broke up whilst on a loved-up holiday in the Caribbean.

“Yes I can confirm they have split up,” a source told Daily Mail in January 2013: “They were on holiday and had an almighty row.”

The couple jetted off to Virgin Gorda, the third-largest of the British Virgin Islands, on New Year’s Day to spend some time together.

However, they had a huge argument which resulted in the singer cutting her trip short and returning home alone.

A paparazzi photo showed Taylor leaving the British Virgin Islands to travel home following the row.

In the image, she is sitting on a boat on her own, wearing a blue dress and black sunglasses as she stares into the distance glumly.

She is the only one on the small white boat which says “Flying Rae” on the back. To get to Virgin Gorda, you have to fly into St. Thomas and get a two hour ferry across to the island.

Taylor cut her trip short, but Harry continued partying in the Caribbean with friends and even visited Richard Branson, who owns a private island nearby.

“When Taylor left for The States, Harry went to Branson’s island to let off some steam,” the same source told the Daily Mail.

They added that he did “lots of partying” whilst on Necker Island and returned to Virgin Gorda the following morning after the “raucous night”.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: When it comes to her music, Taylor Swift is the queen of leaving Easter eggs in her songs for her fans to speculate on.

The most recent one is the 'Is It Over Now?' song from the '1989 (Taylor's Version)' album, released on October 27, which according to fans, might allude to her former lover Harry Styles .

The singer, 33, has included never-before-heard tracks on the reissue of her fifth album, '1989', which launched her career to new heights in 2014.

The album includes all 19 original songs as well as five more songs "from the vault"; some of these songs might indicate her breakup with Styles, 29, whom she dated before the 2014 release of '1989.'

The couple parted ways nearly ten years ago. However, longtime Swifties observed a link between the two and the new From The Vault tune 'Is It Over Now?'

In the synth-pop ballad 'Is It Over Now? (Taylor's Verison),' Swift seems to be singing about how hard it is to move on from a former relationship when both individuals are in the spotlight.

Swift sings, "And did you think I didn’t see you? / There were flashin’ lights," apparently in reference to her ex-partner being seen in pictures.

"At least I had the decency / To keep my nights out of sight / Only rumors ’bout my hips and thighs /And my whispered sighs," she continues.

Swift continues, labeling the former lover a "lying traitor" and charging them with looking in "every model’s bed for something greater."

Swift refers to the ex's "new girl" as her "clone" and jokes about their shared reluctance to let go of their romance in other parts of the song, as per US Weekly .

Swift disclosed that she and her ex-partner were once engaged in a snowmobile accident in an interview with Rolling Stone in 2014. She told the media, "You know what I’ve found works even better than an NDA?"

"Looking someone in the eye and saying, ‘Please don’t tell anyone about this." In contrast, Styles was seen in pictures with a bandage over his chin a few days after the event.

Swift recalls a "blue dress on a boat" in the second verse as well. Swift and Styles are said to have called it quits in 2013 while on vacation in the Virgin Islands.

Fans of Swift might recall a picture that appeared online in 2013 and showed Swift sitting grimly by herself on a yacht in the Virgin Islands, clad in black sunglasses and a blue outfit.

A decade after it went viral the first time, a photo of Taylor Swift in a blue dress on a boat is circulating on the internet again after she referenced it in her new song, “Is It Over Now?”

“Is It Over Now?” is the fifth “From the Vault” track and the last song on 1989 (Taylor’s Version) , a re-release of Taylor’s fifth studio album, 1989 , which was first released in 2014 and won the Grammy for Album of the Year.

According to People, the photo of Taylor Swift in a blue dress on the boat was taken while was sitting in customs. Styles, meanwhile, stayed on the vacation and even paid a visit to business magnate Richard Branson’s private island. “Richard Branson heard Harry was staying nearby so invited him to come check out Necker,” a source told Business Insider at the time. “So when Taylor left for the states, Harry went to Branson’s island for the day to let off some steam.”

Harry Styles Enters His 1989 Era One Last Time

In anticipation of 1989 (Taylor’s Version) , Taylor Swift has spent the last month actively reliving her “Shake It Off” years. She’s doing girl-squad pap walks around New York City, boldly embracing a new romance in public again, and now, resurfacing Haylor, her ship name with former boyfriend/fellow sequin appreciator Harry Styles, on “Is It Over Now?” Written by Swift and Jack Antonoff, this 1989 (TV) vault track sees Swift reminiscing about her notorious on-again, off-again relationship with a former boy-bander who had a thing for blue eyes, wondering whether it was finished for good. How do we know for sure? Let’s take a Central Park–themed walk through some of the song’s lyrics.

Clue: “When you lost control / Red blood, White snow” Translation: Ah, yes, the snowmobile accident, the same one referenced in “Out of the Woods” (“Remember when you hit the brakes too soon? Twenty stitches in the hospital room”). This confirms the song is almost certainly about Styles. Fans suspect the incident happened on a trip the two took a few days before Christmas 2012, since Styles was later seen attempting to hide his stitches with a scarf. (Also, he made a very conspicuous tweet about it the same day.) Later, Swift confirmed to Rolling Stone that she was in a snowmobile accident with an ex.

Clue: “I see your profile and your smile on unsuspecting waiters” Translation: The two pop stars allegedly first met at the Kids Choice Awards in March 2012. While there are no reports of them actually interacting at the show, “unsuspecting” might mean this was the night they were just foxes hiding in plain sight .

Clue: “Baby was it over when she laid down on your couch? / Was it over when he unbuttoned my blouse? / Was it over then and was it over now?” Translation: An allusion to the many beginnings and endings of their relationship. After crushing for months, the two allegedly started seeing each other for a few weeks in April 2012 — until Styles was caught kissing with “Gotta Be You” model Emily Ostilly . Later that year, Swift had a summer romance with Connor Kennedy, who might be the “he” she is referring to in this lyric. And “Was it over now” could be a time jump to January 2013, when Swift and Styles broke up for the second time . 

Clue: “And did you think I didn’t see you? There were flashing lights / At least I had the decency to keep my nights out of sight” Translation: A possible reference to the paparazzi photos of Styles kissing Ostilly. Vanity Fair claimed that Styles told Swift that he was just “kissing a friend good-bye,” which prompted Swift to Google pictures of the two clearly making out.

Clue: “You dream of my mouth before it called you a lying traitor” Translation: Styles’s childhood friend, Nick Clough, tells the Mirror that the One Direction star had a crush on Swift years before they got together. “He was like ‘Oh my god, she’s really, really good looking. I would do anything for a bit of that.’ Then he went and got with her years later!” And perhaps Swift called Styles a “lying traitor” after hearing his explanation for the Ostilly kiss.

Clue: “Your new girl is my clone” and “If she’s got blue eyes I will surmise that you’ll probably date her” Translation: Back in 2012, Styles had a type , and Swift clocked it immediately ( Ostilly was also a tall blonde with blue eyes). Styles was later rumored to be hanging out with Rod Stewart’s blue-eyed daughter, Kimberly Stewart , in April 2013.

Clue: “You search in every model’s bed for something greater” Translation: Ostilly = model.

Clue: “Blue dress on a boat” Translation: Swift finally references the rumored fight she had with Styles in the British Virgin Islands, where she was seen in a blue dress, sitting on a yacht alone on her way to the airport. The fight must’ve been particularly painful since the two had just shared a a kiss on New Year’s Eve.

Clue: “Once the flight has flown, with the wilt of a rose, I slept all alone” Translation: Swift flew back from her vacation with Styles on the British Virgin Islands “all alone. A few days later, she recorded the Styles-coded “All You Had to Do Was Stay.”

‘Is It Over Now’ has got tongues wagging though as it seems to reference very specific moments that fans believe she experienced with Harry Styles. Let’s take a look at what they could be and what the lyrics mean.

Taylor’s ‘blue dress boat’ moment

OK, here’s a little history lesson for those that need it. Taylor and Harry dated for a short time at the end of 2012. 1D were one of the hottest boybands on the planet and Taylor was also approaching superstar status.

As their schedules were so busy – and maybe because they were still in the early stages of a relationship – the two hadn’t spent the festive period together so took a trip to the British Virgin Islands at the start of 2013.

No one knows for sure what happened on this trip, but Taylor flew back home alone while Harry stayed. She was pictured in the blue dress, looking sad on a boat during her their trip so the lyrics “blue dress / on a boat” seem to heavily hint at this moment.

But Taylor has seemed to reclaim the narrative around the blue dress though - she wore a stunning blue Oscar De La Renta number for the global premier of her Eras Tour film.

Who is ‘Is It Over Now’ by Taylor Swift about'?

Fans absolutely believe that this is another song about Harry Styles. Aside from the blue dress reference,Taylor also sings about the time someone “lost control” leading to “red blood, white snow” which could reference an incident that happened when she was skiing with Harry, where she was injured.

The same incident was also apparently referenced in ‘Out Of The Woods’ when she sang “Remember when you hit the brakes too soon? 20 stitches in a hospital room.” Incidentally Taylor also wore a blue dress in the video for this song.

What does ‘Is It Over Now’ mean?

‘Is It Over Now’ is about a doomed relationship - a theme that anyone familiar with Tyalor’s work will recognise.

It also appears to allude to some rumours of cheating. In the first verse, Taylor sings: “You dream of my mouth before it called you a lying traitor / You search in every maiden's bed for somethin' greater” before adding “Was it over when she laid down on your couch?”

But that’s not all. Taylor managed to throw some shade at her beau's new love, singing: “Your new girl is my clone” and later adding “If she's got blue eyes, I will surmise that you'll probably date her.” After Harry and Taylow split he was linked with Kimberley Stewart – daughter of 70s legend Rod – and owner of a pair of stunning baby blue eyes.

“Haylor” never goes out of style.

It’s been 10 years since Taylor Swift and Harry Styles were rumored to be dating, as they were spotted strolling around New York City’s Central Park Zoo in December 2012. While the suspected couple never publicly confirmed their short-lived relationship, fans have since gotten songs from both artists that are widely believed to be about their whirlwind romance, from Styles’ “Ever Since New York” and “Two Ghosts” to Swift’s “Out of the Woods” and the aptly titled “Style.”

Nearly a decade later, the duo sweetly reunited at the 2021 Grammy Awards, where Swift won album of the year for her eighth studio album Folklore , while Styles took home his first-ever Grammy for best pop solo performance for his Fine Line hit, “Watermelon Sugar.” In a viral video that circulated the Internet, the two were seen chatting and smiling, making it clear that there’s no “bad blood” between the exes. Swift was even reportedly seen standing up and clapping for Styles after he won his award.

Throughout the years, Styles has been asked about his famous former sweetheart in interviews — specifically about the songs that are believed to be about him — and has even made nods to her while performing onstage.

November 2015 - Styles Plays 'Never Have I Ever' on 'Ellen'

While visiting The Ellen DeGeneres with his One Direction bandmates, the talk show host decided to poke some fun with a game of “Never Have I Ever.” The first question was “Never have I ever had someone write a song about me,” to which Styles lifted the “I have never” paddle.

“We’re not going to play if you’re going to lie,” said DeGeneres, before flipping the paddle to the correct side, seemingly referring to songs on Swift’s 1989 . “We are very honest in this studio.”

April 2017 - Rolling Stone Cover Story

Following the release of his debut solo album in 2017, Styles discussed his “new direction” and his past relationship with Swift for his first solo Rolling Stone cover.

“When I see photos from that day,” he said in the interview of the couple’s Central Park date. “I think: Relationships are hard, at any age. And adding in that you don’t really understand exactly how it works when you’re 18, trying to navigate all that stuff didn’t make it easier. I mean, you’re a little bit awkward to begin with. You’re on a date with someone you really like. It should be that simple, right? It was a learning experience for sure. But at the heart of it – I just wanted it to be a normal date.”

When asked if Swift’s “Out of the Woods” and “Style” are about him, the singer replied, “I mean, I don’t know if they’re about me or not …” he says, attempting gallant discretion, “but the issue is, she’s so good, they’re bloody everywhere.”

He continued, “I write from my experiences; everyone does that. I’m lucky if everything [we went through] helped create those songs. That’s what hits your heart. That’s the stuff that’s hardest to say, and it’s the stuff I talk least about. That’s the part that’s about the two people. I’m never going to tell anybody everything.”

March 2020 - Howard Stern Interview

In an interview with Howard Stern on SiriusXM, Styles discussed a variety of topics, including his songwriting practices.

When Stern observed that Styles’ romantic songs are often followed by fans trying to figure out which famous love interest it’s about, the crooner agreed. “There’s not a lot of interviews where I talk a lot about personal stuff, but I’m fine doing it in music. And I feel like, doing it in music, that’s my version,” he explained.

Stern then brought up Styles’ former romance with Swift, asking if songs written about him upsets him. “I think about what it means to me to write a song about somebody else, and for someone else to do that, I think it’s flattering,” the “As It Was” singer replied. “Even if the song isn’t that flattering, you still spend time on it, and ultimately, using Taylor as an example, she’s a great songwriter.”

“The only time that you think, ‘Oh, is this song too personal?’ is if you think about, is this going to be really annoying for the other person,” he continued.

May 2022 - Howard Stern Round Two

Two years after his first time discussing Taylor Swift on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM show, Styles returned to receive yet another question about his famous past relationship.

The host brought up “Daylight” off of Styles’ third album, Harry’s House , noting that Swift also had a song called “Daylight,” cheekily wondering if he was reading too much into things. “You’re smiling,” he said to Styles.

“You know I’d love to tell you you’re spot-on, but you’re not,” Harry said of the summery R&B jam. “We will always wonder.”

May 2022 - Styles Sings '22' During Concert

During his One Night Only concert in London, the 28-year-old pop star was interacting with fans in the crowd when he reportedly discovered that one of them was there in celebration of their 22nd b-day. “Twenty-two!” he exclaimed from stage.

As he was walking away, he quietly sang part of Swift’s age-specific  Red hit into his microphone: “I’m feeling 22, ooh ooh!”

Sailing into the sunset? Taylor Swift wants to take Harry Styles on a romantic yacht trip

Taylor Swift is planning to take Harry Styles on a romantic yacht trip on the French Riviera this weekend.

The 23-year-old singer wants to have some "private romantic time" with the 18-year-old star ahead of his 19th birthday next Friday as part of the first steps of the pair getting back together following their split earlier this month. Taylor and Harry are expected to seal their reunion at the NRJ Music Awards in Cannes this Sunday - where One Direction are nominated for International Group of the Year - and a source revealed Taylor wants "no expense to be spared" when she whisks Harry away. A One Direction insider told the Daily Star: "The lads are planning to hang out together enjoying Cannes - and they also want to get to Paris. "But Taylor is desperately trying to make arrangements for her and Harry to slip away and have private romantic time. "She has got a boat on standby ready for them to sneak off. "Taylor thought a boat would be the perfect getaway as photographers can't follow them." Taylor has rented a small private villa in the town of Mougins, four miles north of Cannes, but Harry's "main focus" is said to be spending time with his bandmates Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan. The insider added: "It's all up in the air as Harry's main focus is being with his band." But it would not be the first time Taylor and Harry went on a yacht after the One Direction singer hired a sailboat to take them to two private islands during their romantic break in the Caribbean at new year, but the holiday ended in disaster when they split after having an argument. A source said at the time: "Harry and Taylor kept getting hassled for pictures by fans on the island so he hired a yacht for two days and one night to take them to two private islands. "He organised snorkelling and a chef to cook gourmet meals when they wanted."

'1989' puts a spotlight on Taylor Swift and Harry Styles’ relationship timeline

With the release of Taylor Swift ’s “1989 (Taylor’s Version),” fans are remembering that the “Anti-Hero” singer had a romantic life before her rumored r elationship with NFL star Travis Kelce.

Swift’s “1989” album was originally released two years after her rumored romance with fellow pop star Harry Styles . The former couple, who fans dubbed “ Haylor, ” dated from late 2012 until early 2013, and appear to have remained friendly over the years.

Some “1989” songs, both in the original release and the re-release, appear to hint at the relationship, with specific references in lyrics.

Swift has never confirmed who the songs are about, and in fact has declined to share. When asked during a December 2014 interview with Global's "The Morning Show" about whether the person she was singing about is also a singer, Swift replied, “One of the things about writing music and to be this vulnerable is to never name names.”

“Style” seems to be a reference to the former One Direction singer’s last name, and a new song from the vault, “Is It Over Now?” seems to contain overt references to a snowmobile accident the two were reportedly involved in. (She addressed the accident in a 2014 Rolling Stone interview , without naming which "ex" she was with at the time).

March 2012: Taylor Swift and Harry Styles attend the Kids Choice Awards

Viewers of the 2012 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards learned that Swift and close pal Selena Gomez were major One Direction fans. The pair were caught on camera dancing and singing in the audience as the band performed its mega-hit “What Makes You Beautiful.”

November 2012: Styles calls Swift 'lovely' as romance rumors escalate

As rumors about the pair escalated, Styles, who was 18 at the time, spoke about Swift, then 22, to Seventeen for a One Direction profile published in November 2012.

Styles called the “You Belong With Me” singer a “real lovely girl.”

“Honestly, she couldn’t be a sweeter person,” he said, adding, “She’s a great girl and she’s extremely talented.”

Styles also said the singer is “one of those people you meet (who’s) genuinely a nice person. Some people you meet and they are not as nice as you make them out to be, but she’s one of those people who’s really just amazing.”

November 2012: Taylor wears Harry's necklace (or one just like it)

Around the same time of the Seventeen article, eagle-eyed fans noticed that Swift began wearing a necklace that's identical to Styles' paper airplane necklace. (She later seemingly referenced the symbol in her "1989" hit "Out of the Woods" with the lyrics, "Two paper airplanes flying, flying, flying.")

December 2012: They're photographed walking together in Central Park

On Dec. 2, 2012, a day before One Direction performed at New York’s Madison Square Garden, Swift and Styles were photographed walking together in Central Park.

January 2013: They're spotted sharing a kiss on New Year's Eve

The couple were photographed kissing as the clock struck 12 a.m. during “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest” in New York’s Times Square, according to People.

Swift was one of the night's performers.

January 2013: The Virgin Islands breakup

The two were photographed in St. John together, per E!, in early January. Swift appeared to leave the Virgin Islands alone. A photo of her on the back of a boat, wearing a blue dress by herself, went viral.

In her new vault track "Is It Over Now?" Swift seemingly addressed the photo with the lyric, "Blue dress on a boat." The song reflects on heartbreak and the uncertain end of a relationship due to betrayal.

February 2013: Taylor fakes an English accent while performing at the Grammys

A month after the breakup, Swift broke into a mock English accent while performing “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” when she opened for the 2013 Grammys, per videos .

“Ugh, so he calls me up and he’s like, ‘I still love you,’” she said, feigning a British twang, before switching back to an American accent to respond, “This is just exhausting, you know? We are never, ever getting back together. Ever.”

October 2014: Taylor releases '1989'

On Oct. 27, 2014, Swift released her album “1989.” Of the songs, fans identify “Style” and “Out of the Woods” as possibly being about Styles.

S wift, in 2023, said “Is It Over Now?” is a “sister song ” to “Out of the Woods,” and fans also saw “Is It Over Now?” as a song about the One Directioner.

“Style” finds Swift’s narrator singing passionately about a James Dean type who wears white T-shirts and his long hair “slicked back,” a look Styles made popular at the time.

“Out of the Woods” mentions a couple needing emergency treatment after an accident, with the lyrics, “Remember when you hit the brakes too soon / Twenty stitches in a hospital room.” Swift has confirmed she got into a snowmobile accident with an "ex," who is reportedly Styles.

Performing an acoustic version of “Out of the Woods” at the opening of the Grammy Museum in 2015 , Swift spoke about the relationship that inspired the song.

“The number one feeling I felt in the whole relationship was anxiety. Because it felt very fragile, it felt very tentative. And it always felt like, ‘Okay, what’s the next road block? What’s the next thing that’s gonna deter this? How long do we have before this turns into just an awful mess and we break up? Is it a month? Is it three days? And so, you know, I think a lot of relationships can be very solid and that’s kind of what you hope for, for it to be solid and healthy but that’s not always what you get. And it doesn’t mean that it’s not special and extraordinary just to have a relationship that’s fragile and somehow meaningful in that fragility,” she said.

October and December 2014: Swift addresses ‘Style,’ including how it got its title

Swift told Ryan Seacrest on “ On Air with Ryan Seacrest ” that “Style” was the last song she wrote on “1989.” When asked why she named the song “Style,” Swift dodged the question: “‘Cause the hook is ‘we never go out of style.’ And I thought ‘we never go out of style’ was a long title."

She also broke down the lyrics about both individuals seeing other people: “I heard that you’ve been out and about with some other girl, some other girl / He says, ‘What you heard is true, but I can’t stop thinkin’ ‘bout you’ and I / I said, ‘I’ve been there too a few times.’”

“It’s one of those relationships that’s always a bit off … it’s never quite synced up right. The two people are trying to forget each other. They’ve both been out with other people and try to forget the other. It’s like, ‘I heard you went off with her and you came back. Well, I’ve done that too.’ That’s what that line means,” Swift said.

Later on in the interview she declined to say who the song was about, but she continued to say what the song was about.

In December, Swift revealed on Global's “The Morning Show “ that “Style” is about a romance that never quite ends.

“‘Style’ is actually about those relationships that are never really done,” she explained. “You always kind of have that one person who you feel like might interrupt your wedding and be like, ‘Don’t do it, we’re not over yet.’ I think everybody has that one person who kind of floats in and out of their life and the narrative is never truly over.”

October 2015: One Direction releases 'Perfect,' which fans believe is about Taylor Swift

One Direction released their song “Perfect,” which Styles co-wrote with band member Louis Tomlinson and other collaborators.

“If you like flashing cameras every time we go out / If you’re looking for someone to write your breakup songs about / Baby we’re perfect,” Styles sings on one verse, prompting fans to believe the song is at least partly about Swift.

March 2021: The exes reunite at the 2021 Grammys

Styles and Swift chatted with each other in the audience of the 2021 Grammys, according to a video posted by the Recording Academy.

Both performers were honored for the work that night, with Swift winning the award for album of the year for "Folklore," and Styles winning a best pop solo performance Grammy for "Watermelon Sugar."

May 2022: Styles sings some of Swift's lyrics during a concert

Styles sang a line from Swift’s song “22” while celebrating a fan’s birthday during a live performance in London. In a fan video posted on Twitter, Styles is seen singing “I’m feeling 22” after reading a sign about an audience member's 22nd birthday.

October 2022: Swift releases 'Midnights' with one song reminding fans of Styles

Swift released her 10th studio album, "Midnights," on Oct. 21, 2022.

The song "Question …?" reminded fans of "Out of the Woods" because it features the same opening melody and samples , with voice modulation, some of the lyrics, including the very first line: "I remember."

February 2023: Taylor and Harry share a hug at the Grammys

Swift showed her support for Styles at the 2023 Grammys when she gave him a standing ovation after he won the album of the year award for "Harry's House."

The sweet moment was caught on camera by Entertainment Weekly.

The "Shake it Off" singer, who took home the best music video award for “All Too Well: The Short Film,” also stood to dance while Styles performed his hit "As It Was" and stopped by Styles' table to give him a hug.

Taylor Swift Shaded Harry Styles in New Song 'Is It Over Now?'

Taylor Swift dropped "1989 Taylor's Version)" on Friday, and then came the wave of speculation on who the vault tracks are about.

The singer released all 16 songs from the "1989" album, initially released in 2014, along with five new songs: "'Slut!'," "Say Don't Go," "Suburban Legends," "Is It Over Now?," and "Now That We Don't Talk."

However, out of all these songs, fans have latched on to "Is It Over Now?" due to its telling lyrics, and they have decided that the song is about Swift's ex-boyfriend, Harry Styles.

According to reports , the lyrics "blue dress on a boat" allude to one of the most popular pictures of Swift sitting on a boat in a blue dress shortly after her break up with the One Direction album.

Other parts of the song also shaded the "As It Was" singer, like "if she's got blue eyes / I will surmise that you'll probably date her.

"You dream of my mouth before it called you a lying traitor / You search in every model's bed for something greater, baby."

Taylor Swift Clocked Harry Styles in New Song

Fans have always joked about Swift and Styles' relationship over the years. Some call themselves "children of divorced parents," referring to the two artists.

However, there is not actual beef going on between the fans, and they just like to poke fun at the artists from time to time.

"I love Harry Styles so dearly but she really gagged him with this one I won't lie," a fan wrote.

"She did NOT hold back in the SLIGHTEST and omfg I'm HERE for it."

"Harry is literally my fav human and i love him but this made me giggle."

"'I want you here with me, like how I pictured it, is it too much to ask for something great?' This is def for Harry," another wrote, referencing One Direction's song "Something Great" from their "Midnight Memories" album.

Taylor Swift, Harry Styles Relationship Timeline

Swift and Styles dated in 2012, which, at the time, caused major distress among One Direction fans.

They were first reportedly  linked in November when the British singer visited Swift while she rehearsed for her "The X Factor" appearance and performance.

By December, they were seen out and about, walking alongside each other in Central Park. On New Year's Eve, they even shared a public kiss.

By January, though, they had already reportedly broken up. Several songs from '1989" are rumored to be about the "Watermelon Sugar" singer like "Style" and "I Know Places."

As rumors continue to run rampant that Taylor Swift and Harry Styles have called it quits , shots showing the Red artist sitting by herself on the back of a boat in St. Johns have surfaced.

A source tells E! News that Swift got on with her bodyguards, who were carrying five bags. She apparently looked a bit sad and not very happy.

The photos were taken on Friday, Jan. 4, as Swift was leaving U.S. Customs and heading to the airport to fly back to the United States by herself. The (former?) couple orginally made their way down to the British Virgin Islands after sharing a New Year's Eve kiss in New York City.

Of course, the absence of Styles here certainly seems to support the speculation that he and his ladylove are no more.

Meanwhile, a rep for One Direction has yet to comment on the possible split, and Swift's people have not yet returned a request for comment.

"They are two young stars at the top of their game so who knows what will happen in the future." 

An "almighty row"? Okay, there's a lot to unpack. Styles and Swift spent Christmas of 2012 apart, so they decided to come together for New Year's. The two of them traveled to the British Virgin Islands for their holiday vacation, but things did not go to plan. Cue the "almighty row," the argument that ultimately ended it all, though we're not privy to the details. As noted by the Daily Mail, Swift ended up leaving the trip early and flew back to the United States on January 4, a mere three days after she arrived. Styles, on the other hand, stayed and even traveled to Virgin Group founder Richard Branson's island to "let off some steam," according to Business Insider . RIP Haylor.

What other tracks were reportedly about Styles? "I Knew You Were Trouble" and "Out of the Woods." Swift even said after performing "I Knew You Were Trouble" at the Grammys, "It's not hard to access that emotion when the person the song is directed at is standing by the side of the stage watching." Wow, okay.

There seemed to be some tension between Taylor Swift and Harry Styles in May 2015

Taylor Swift and Harry Styles broke up at the beginning of 2013, but even two years later, things appeared to be a little tense between them. In May 2015, Swift hosted a Billboard Awards after-party, attended by a bunch of A-list celebrities. Some of the attendees included none other than the members of One Direction, with one notable exception: Styles. 

Apparently, Styles left Las Vegas where the award ceremony was held, and departed for Los Angeles, leaving his bandmates behind. They clearly did not mind ruffling feathers with Styles, because they all went to Swift's party despite the history their bandmate had with the pop star. Swift was linked to DJ Calvin Harris at the time, so honestly Styles' attendance could've been pretty awkward.

"[Harry] realised the party wasn't a good idea, so flew back to LA solo," a source said (via News24 ). A spokesperson for One Direction merely stated that Styles "didn't stay in Vegas after the awards, so didn't attend any after-show party."

Most notably, Styles avoided answering questions during a game of "Never Have I Ever" while appearing on " The Ellen DeGeneres Show " in November 2015.

Styles went on to share that he dated Swift as she was someone that he "really [liked]", and he thought at the time that their relationship would be "that simple." 

"I just wanted it to be a normal date," he shared. But if one thing is true, it's that two international pop stars don't exactly have normal lives.

We can't even imagine what it must be like to have songwriting talent, let alone to have the talent that Taylor Swift has. Of course, a number of songs from her hit album "1989" are believed to reference her relationship with Harry Styles, and while he avoided the topic in the past, Styles finally opened up about the songs to Rolling Stone . 

"I mean, I don't know if they're about me or not ..." he told the magazine. "But the issue is, she's so good, they're bloody everywhere." Styles said that, like Swift, he writes his songs based on his own life experience, and he said that he considered himself "lucky" if Swift in fact did use aspects of their relationship to create such popular songs. As mentioned by Rolling Stone, some fans speculate that the One Direction song "Perfect" — which Styles co-wrote — was about Swift. "That's the stuff that's hardest to say, and it's the stuff I talk least about," Styles said. "I'm never going to tell anybody everything."

So while there may have been a little bit of pain surrounding his former relationship with Swift, Styles couldn't resist singing part of his ex's song. He went up to the mic and sang, "Twenty-two. She's 22, okay. I don't know about ..." The crowd of spectators roared with excitement. 

Styles probably didn't even get the entire line of "I don't know about you, but I'm feeling 22" out because of the noise from the fans, but it was a great moment nevertheless. And of course, the internet was wild with tweets referencing the moment. Notably, Styles had previously tweeted  that he was "feeling 22" when he turned 22 in 2016.

In a video posted to X, formerly known as  Twitter , Swift can be seen making her way over to Styles' table. He gives her a half-hug and the two chat for a bit before Swift returns to her group. Taylor Swift 's interactions with ex-boyfriend Harry Styles went viral during Grammys night, as it offered the internet a glimpse of how seemingly amicable and friendly things are between them. Swift and Styles dated in late 2012 for a couple months; they broke up in early 2013.

A source spoke to Entertainment Tonight yesterday about what the state of affairs between Styles and Swift is like now. “Taylor and Harry have no issues and they are friendly,” the insider said. “Taylor thinks Harry is such a talented artist and has nothing but respect for him. Their relationship was a long time ago, and Taylor has moved on and is very happy in her relationship with Joe [Alwyn]. She has matured as a person, and things are peaceful and good between them.”

A second source revealed that Swift's boyfriend of six years , Joe Alwyn, was also a special part of her Grammys evening despite his absence at the ceremony . “Taylor and Joe attended a Grammys after-party at Chateau Marmont last night. They were there until late, had a great time, and were letting loose,” the source told Entertainment Tonight of the couple's secret meetup.

Some photos of Swift at the after party, which she reportedly hosted , have emerged and reveal she had an outfit change. Shots of her and Alwyn have not surfaced yet though:

Swift hasn't said a lot about her brief romance with Styles. But back in October 2015, she spoke about the relationship that inspired her 1989 song “Out of the Woods,” which is believed to be about Styles.

“The number one feeling I felt in the whole relationship was anxiety,” she recalled then. “Because it felt very fragile, it felt very tentative. And it always felt like, ‘Okay, what’s the next road block? What’s the next thing that’s gonna deter this? How long do we have before this turns into just an awful mess and we break up? Is it a month? Is it three days?’ And so, you know, I think a lot of relationships can be very solid and that’s kind of what you hope for, for it to be solid and healthy but that’s not always what you get. And it doesn’t mean that it’s not special and extraordinary just to have a relationship that’s fragile and somehow meaningful in that fragility.”

Harry Styles is kicking off 2024 by soaking up the sun and showing off his muscles on a tropical vacation with girlfriend Taylor Russell and close pal James Corden .

The 29-year-old “As It Was” hitmaker is vacationing with the duo and a couple of other close friends on a yacht, and they enjoyed some warm weather on the beaches in Anguilla.

On Tuesday (January 2), the Harry was spotted taking a swim while Taylor posed for pics on the beach.

Harry ‘s recently buzzed hair is coming back in nicely , and his tattoos and toned physique are on full display in photos obtained by the Daily Mail .

Taylor looked chic in a white dress while James paired his black swim trunks with a matching polo.

If you were unaware, Harry and James have been close for quite some time now, and this is hardly their first vacation together. In 2020, they enjoyed some time in the Caribbean with Adele and generated multiple headlines .

James opened up about what it was like vacationing with Harry in an interview last year.

Taylor would not be the first of Harry ‘s famous partners that James has hung out with, either. In fact, reports suggested that he actually helped the One Direction singer keep his relationship with Olivia Wilde a secret in a meaningful way.

Hopefully the trio is enjoying their vacation! If nothing else, the water is sure to be a lot warmer than it was when Harry was last seen catching a swim .

All of Taylor Swift’s Harry Styles Lyrical Easter Eggs in the 1989 ‘From the Vault’ Songs

For background, Swift and Styles dated publicly from December 2012 to January 2013. A source that Swift authorized to speak to Vanity Fair in March 2013 discussed how on-off their relationship was.

Styles “wore her down,” the source said, and allegedly “chased” the singer for a year. “He was all, like, ‘You’re amazing—I want to be with you. I want to do this,’” the source explained.

Their relationship “fell apart after he texted Swift to alert her of a picture on the Internet of him kissing a friend goodbye,” Vanity Fair detailed. The source specified that “[they were] making out like with their hands all up in each other’s hair.”

So Swift broke it off with Styles, but he kept pursuing her for “the better part of a year.” She reconciled with him eventually, “but the whole time she says she feels like he’s looking at every girl,” the source said. When they were in London together, he “disappears one night and after that it was like he just didn’t want to keep going.”

In March 2015, Swift spoke about how anxious the relationship made her feel. While discussing “Out of the Woods,” another 1989 track seemingly about Styles, she said :

The number one feeling I felt in the whole relationship was anxiety. Because it felt very fragile, it felt very tentative. And it always felt like, ‘Okay, what’s the next road block? What’s the next thing that’s gonna deter this? How long do we have before this turns into just an awful mess and we break up? Is it a month? Is it three days?’ And so, you know, I think a lot of relationships can be very solid, and that’s kind of what you hope for, for it to be solid and healthy, but that’s not always what you get. And it doesn’t mean that it’s not special and extraordinary just to have a relationship that’s fragile and somehow meaningful in that fragility.

After dating Swift, Styles was romantically linked to Kimberly Stewart in April 2013. Swift and Styles were speculated to have broken up in January 2013, after Swift was photographed leaving their New Year’s trip early.

Throughout the “From the Vault” songs, Swift details the effect the on-off relationship had on her psyche. Here, the verses likely about Styles, song by song.

Not a lot about Styles in this song, but Swift does allude to falling for a famous and very coveted partner. Given Styles’ One Direction fame and heartthrob status, this lyric could easily be about him: “Send the code, he’s waitin’ there / The sticks and stones they throw froze mid-air / Everyone wants him, that was my crime / The wrong place at the right time / And I break down, then he’s pullin’ me in / In a world of boys, he’s a gentleman.”

“Now That We Don’t Talk”

Swift may be describing her and Styles’ relationship post-breakup in this track.

Fans noted Swift’s first verse, “Did you get anxious though / On the way home? / I guess I’ll never ever know / Now that we don’t talk,” may reference her wondering how Styles felt when he left their New Year’s Eve Virgin Islands vacation later than her. Swift went home alone early, sparking speculation they broke up . The couple had kissed just days before on New Year’s Eve in New York City.

Swift’s second verse seems to address Styles’ change in image then: he grew his hair out and was rumored to be considering a solo career apart from One Direction. Styles ultimately released his first solo album in 2017, less than three years after 1989 came out: “You grew your hair long / You got new icons / And from the outside / It looks like you’re tryin’ lives on / I miss the old ways / You didn’t have to change / But I guess I don’t have a say / Now that we don’t talk. ”

Styles spoke to Better Homes and Gardens in April 2022 about processing his time in One Direction. He was taught then to give so much of himself away, “to get people to engage with you, to like you.”

He said, “For a long time, it felt like the only thing that was mine was my sex life.” He continued, “I felt so ashamed about it, ashamed at the idea of people even knowing that I was having sex, let alone who with. At the time, there were still the kiss-and-tell things. Working out who I could trust was stressful. But I think I got to a place where I was like, why do I feel ashamed? I’m a 26-year-old man who’s single; it’s like, yes, I have sex.”

Swift lamented not being able to be friends with her ex in these lines: “Truth is, I can’t pretend it’s / Platonic, it’s just ended, so,” and “I cannot be your friend, so I pay the price of what I lost (Of what I lost) / And what it cost, now that we don’t talk.” Swift and Styles became friendly again years later, most recently talking at the 2023 Grammys.

“Suburban Legends”

The first verse seems to allude to Styles possibly talking to other women while he was with Swift: “You had people who called you on unmarked numbers / In my peripheral vision.” This echoes Vanity Fair ’s source saying that “the whole time she says she feels like he’s looking at every girl.”

These lines—“I had the fantasy that maybe our mismatched star signs / Would surprise the whole school”—could be about Swift and Styles’ astrological compatibility. Swift is a Sagittarius, while Styles is an Aquarius. The AstroTwins noted that both signs cherish independence and “the ‘best friends with benefits’ label was practically invented for you.” But “best friends with benefits” is not a committed, monogamous couple, which is what Swift wanted then.

Swift’s lines, “I broke my own heart ’cause you were too polite to do it / Waves crash on the shore, I dash to the door / You don’t knock anymore and my whole life’s ruined,” may be her alluding to her ending their New Year’s vacation early and ultimately calling off the relationship.

Harry Styles showed off his impressive tattooed physique as he went swimming in Anguilla on Tuesday. 

The singer, 29, has jetted off to see in the New Year with his girlfriend Taylor Russell, 29, who were first linked in June, and his best friend James Corden , 45. 

Harry's short-lived buzz cut appears to be a thing of the past as he sported a thicker head of hair and facial hair. 

The Watermelon Sugar hitmaker shaved off his signature curly locks last year, leaving fans devastated. 

Harry's two swallow and butterfly inkings were visible on his toned chest as he enjoyed the refreshing dip.

The group are staying on a luxury yacht and headed to the Meads Bay Beach on the  Caribbean island to soak up the sun. 

While Harry took a swim back to the yacht, Taylor appeared to be having a blast as she posed for photos taken by a pal. 

The actress hit the beach in a white crochet cover-up and bandana.

James cut a casual figure in a polo T-shirt and navy shorts and shared a laugh with friends as the group went to Blanchards Restaurant and Beach Shack for lunch. 

The expensive restaurant hailed as one of the best restaurants in the Caribbean with innovative cuisine by Chef Melinda Blanchard. 

Harry and Taylor were first romantically linked after they were spotted enjoying an art gallery date in London in June.

Since then, the pair have been spotted enjoying various outings together as they take their romance to new heights. 

The Watermelon Sugar singer reportedly 'sees a future' and is 'head over heels for Taylor,' a source revealed to Us Weekly  last month before noting that he 'loves spending as much time with her as he can'.

The insider claimed: 'Things are very serious, and Harry definitely sees a future with Taylor.'

Harry was reportedly  staying in a swanky £2,500-a-night hotel in Central London  as building work continues on his £50M mega mansion.

He is said to be living out of a suitcase at the very lavish accommodation with Taylor keeping him company.

Harry splashed out £13M in 2020 for  neighbouring 18th Century houses  in North London which he knocked into one property before getting to work on transforming them.

A source told The Sun : 'Harry has understandably kept a wide berth from his pad while the major works are under way, and has checked in to a lavish hotel while in London. 

'His girlfriend Taylor has been staying with him.

'They keep a low profile, popping out for coffees and snacks, and cycling around London like tourists.'

Harry and James often go on holiday together and travelled through Italy in July last year. 

They have been close friends for years after first meeting when the former Late Late Show host interviewed him as part of One Direction back in 2015. 

James spoke about his and Harry's bond to Howard Stern last year: 'I just think [Harry is] so special as a human, but actually, you don’t have any of those feelings because ... like there is someone who wants to embrace the world they’re living into the absolute best that he can and you never ever feel like that. 

'When we went on this one vacation, I made this pact where I said, 'I am only going eat when you eat. I’m going work out when you work out and I’m going eat what you eat and I think it’s going have a really positive impact on me.'"

'[Harry] was like, "OK…" I lasted 36 hours and I was like, "No, I’m out." Once I’ve had a drink, I’m like, ‘I should get some fries and I’m on holiday.'

When Taylor Swift releases a project, you can bet your bottom dollar that we’re going to get some great love songs, some moving break-up songs, and, of course, some scathing revenge songs. Today, we’re focusing on those vengeful tracks and moments where this pop star took someone down with a few lyrics. The lyrics that feature her taking an ex, a friend who wronged her, or a business person down span her whole career, and they’re all fantastic.

"So watch me strike a match on all my wasted time / As far as I'm concerned, you're just another picture to burn" - Picture To Burn (Debut)

Taylor Swift may have only been 16 years old when she released her self-titled debut album, but boy did she know how to sing about revenge. Honestly, when it comes to debut, there’s no better song of her taking a cheating man down than “Picture To Burn.” 

"I never trust a narcissist / But they love me / So I play 'em like a violin / And I make it look oh so easy" - I Did Something Bad (Reputation)

If you learn anything from Reputation , it’s that if you get on Taylor Swift’s bad side she’s not going to take it easy on you, which “I Did Something Bad” proves. Not only does she call out posers and users, but she also makes it clear that she’ll play them right back. Oh, and she takes it one step further in the live Reputation concert because a true highlight comes as she belts this track all about how she’ll get those who have wronged her right back. 

"I forgot that you existed / It isn't love, it isn't hate / It's just indifference" - I Forgot That You Existed (Lover)

Honestly, is there anything more savage than simply saying someone doesn't matter, and you don’t remember them? I don’t think so. And that’s exactly what “I Forgot That You Existed” is all about. In this track Taylor Swift sings about an ex whom she no longer resents, she just simply doesn’t process that they exist anymore. 

"You know the greatest loves of all time are over now" - The 1 (Folklore)

“The 1” is all about what almost was. While the majority of the song sees Taylor Swift reflecting on what could have been, some of the lines cut through and you can feel the takedown, like this one about how all the great loves are long gone and over. 

"'Cause I'm not your princess, this ain't our fairytale / I'm gonna find someone someday / Who might actually treat me well" - White Horse (Fearless)

Taylor Swift realizes that her relationship isn’t the fairytale she once thought it was in “White Horse,” and the line that cuts hardest is when she sings to this man about how she’s going to grow from this and meet someone much, much, much better.  

"So casually cruel in the name of being honest" - All Too Well (Red)

All of “All Too Well,” and especially the 10-minute version, is brutal. However, as Swift sings about the man who took her innocence and broke her heart, no line is as brutal as the one above that she used to describe her ex-lover.  

"Spiderboy, king of thieves / Weave your little webs of opacity / My pennies made your crown" - Karma (Midnights)

Call them out queen! In “Karma” Taylor Swift slams those who have tried to do her dirty, and in this line in particular she calls them out by saying it’s her money that made them successful. It’s widely speculated that this track is about Scooter Braun, and him buying Swift’s catalog of music. While this song isn’t direct, fans have their theories, and she didn’t hold back at all.

"Drunk and grumbling on about how I can't sing / But all you are is mean" - Mean (Speak Now)

Right after the “Mean” line above, Taylor Swift also calls the bully in question a liar, pathetic and alone in life. She takes those who try to look down on folks to the ground with “Mean” as she sings about how someday she’ll be “living in a big ole city,” and all these bullies are is “mean.” 

"Band-aids don't fix bullet holes / You say sorry just for show / If you live like that, you live with ghosts" - Bad Blood (1989)

Along with the A-List cast who are ready to take this pop star’s enemies down in one of Swift’s best music videos, “Bad Blood,” her lyrics are just as dangerous. However, nothing in that song hits harder than the bridge, when she sings the above lyrics that are followed by Kendrick Lamar rapping: “You forgive, you forget, but you never let it go.” 

"You shouldn't be beggin' for forgiveness at my feet / You should've said, 'No' / Baby, and you might still have me" - You Should’ve Sad No (Debut)

There’s nothing like scream-singing about what a guy should have done, and that’s exactly what “You Should’ve Said No” makes you do. This track off Taylor Swift is a total diss about a guy who did her wrong, and not only is she taking him down, she’s telling him exactly what he could have done to fix it too. 

"I got a list of names, and yours is in red, underlined / I check it once, then I check it twice, oh!" - Look What You Made Me Do (Reputation)

“Look What You Made Me Do,” a song inspired by Arya Stark, takes the idea of her kill list, and turns it into a list of folks who have wronged Taylor Swift. While no one is directly named, many assume the track calls out Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, and she makes it very clear that she’s out to get her targets and call out their wrongdoings.

"Took this dagger in me and removed it / Gain the weight of you, then lose it / Believe me, I could do it" - Tolerate It (Evermore)

In evermore’s track “Tolerate It,” Swift sings about her lover simply existing with her. It’s a painful song, and in the Eras Tour, she lays the table and angrily destroys it as she performs the aching song. And of all the lines, the one that maybe cuts the deepest is when she tells him that she will lose him. 

"You held your pride like you should've held me" - Story of Us (Speak Now)

Before turning to the “next chapter,” Taylor Swift takes a moment to tell the catastrophic tale of her last boyfriend, making it clear that he was selfish and terrible through lines like this one, which she sings with so, so much passion. 

"I don't have to pretend I like acid rock / Or that I'd like to be on a mega yacht / With important men who think important thoughts / Guess maybe I am better off" - Now That We Don’t Talk (1989)

The release of 1989 (Taylor’s Version) also brought us some scathing Vault tracks about a breakup Taylor Swift went through, and that includes “Now That We Don’t Talk.” In this track, she sings about what she doesn’t have to do now that they’re broken up, and that maybe she is better off now that they’re not together. 

"Mr. Superior Thinkin' / Do you have all the space that you need? / I don't have to be your shrink to know that you'll never be happy / And I bet you think about me" - I Bet You Think About Me (Red)

In “I Bet You Think About Me,” Taylor Swift sings about a relationship that is long gone, but she just knows that the man who broke her heart still thinks about her, and honestly, he’ll never be happy because of it. 

"And I ain't tryna mess with your self-expression / But I've learned a lesson that stressin' and obsessin' 'bout somebody else is no fun" - You Need To Calm Down (Lover)

Lover was Taylor Swift’s unbothered era, and she was out here calling out all the haters who were trying way too hard to yuck her yum. She made it clear that “snakes and stones” never broke her bones, so these haters shouldn’t even try to get her, because they won’t. 

"And you can aim for my heart, go for blood / But you would still miss me in your bones" - My Tears Ricochet (Folklore)

Folklore’s “My Tears Ricochet” is all about Taylor Swift singing to a lover who left, and she’s saying that if she’s in pain, he needs to be in pain too. While this song is mostly sad, there’s no doubting the vengeance that can be felt in lines like this one.  

"But I'm not the only friend you've lost lately (mmm) / If only you weren't so shady" - This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things (Reputation)

Taylor Swift really decided to call an ex-friend out with “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things,” and along with lyrically putting them in time out, she also called them out for being “shady” with multiple people, not just her. 

"Boys only want love if it's torture / Don't say I didn't, say I didn't warn ya" - Blank Space (1989)

“Blank Space” is all about Taylor Swift leaning into the public’s perception of her and playing this crazed part. Not only is this song a savage commentary, it also holds no bars to the men who have wronged her, and nothing shows that off better than this line. 

"Now I'm Miss 'Gonna be alright someday' / And someday maybe you'll miss me / But by then, you'll be Mr. 'Too late'" - Mr. Perfectly Fine (Fearless)

While there are many songs on Fearless that seemingly call out Joe Jonas, when Swift re-released the album, “Mr. Perfectly Fine” easily became the most brutal of the tracks. Even Jonas’ now ex-wife Sophie Turner got a kick out of the song all (presumably) about the singer’s infamous breakup with the Jonas brother. 

"The idea you had of me, who was she? / A never-needy, ever-lovely jewel whose shine reflects on you" - All Too Well (Red)

As Taylor Swift sings through her pain in “All Too Well,” she also takes down her ex by making it clear just how much damage he did. That’s exemplified perfectly in this line. 

"No one likes a mad woman / You made her like that" - Mad Woman (Folklore)

If no one likes a mad woman, Taylor Swift is going to make it abundantly clear that it’s all this person’s fault on this emotional track from Folklore . 

"My time, my wine, my spirit, my trust / Trying to find a part of me you didn't take up" - Death By A Thousand Cuts (Lover)

The bridge of “Death By A Thousand Cuts” goes so hard! As Taylor Swift sings about all these little cuts that have culminated into a massive problem, in the bridge she lists thing after thing that this relationship has impacted, and it’s incredibly powerful.

"Your new girl is my clone" - Is It Over Now? (1989)

For context, right before Taylor Swift sings this line in “Is It Over Now?” she calls out a couple of moments: “red blood, white snow” and “blue dress on a boat.” Fans immediately linked this 1989 Vault track to Harry Styles. It’s a brutal verse, and overall, the song almost feels like a diss track about what went down between Swift and the ex she’s singing about.

"I made you my world, have you heard, I can reclaim the land." - Bejeweled (Midnights)

“Bejeweled” is all about Taylor Swift getting her sparkle back after having her light snuffed out. While she was willing to change and hide a bit, now she’s ready to “reclaim the land,” and as she says “I miss you, but I miss sparkling.” 

I'm shining like fireworks over your sad, empty town - “Dear John” (Speak Now)

While Taylor Swift has never confirmed that this song is about John Mayer, it certainly seems like her most obvious call out of an ex. This song is brutal, and one of the lines that hits the hardest comes when she says she shines much brighter than her former partner and his “sad” town.

"Rain came pouring down / When I was drowning, that's when I could finally breathe / And by morning / Gone was any trace of you, I think I am finally clean" - Clean (1989)

Washing away the pain of an ex is what “Clean” is about, and Taylor Swift’s lines about leaving a relationship in the past, and comparing the process to getting sober, as if this relationship was an addiction, hit really hard.

"And when I meet the band / They ask, 'Do you have a man?' / I could still say, 'I don't remember'" - Bejeweled (Midnights)

Is there anything worse than not being remembered? I don’t think so, and one of the greatest ways Taylor Swift takes people who have wronged her down is by simply singing about how irrelevant they are to her, like she did in “Bejeweled.” 

"And now that I'm sittin' here thinkin' it through / I've never been anywhere cold as you" - Cold As You (Debut)

Even the deep cuts off Taylor Swift have some savage lines. Take “Cold As You” for example, it might be a slow, sad song, but if you look at the lyric above, she’s clearly ready to take this guy down too.

"Sophistication isn't what you wear, or who you know / Or pushing people down to get you where you wanna go" - Better Than Revenge (Speak Now)

There’s nothing Taylor Swift does “Better Than Revenge,” as this list proves, and she proved that once again with this sassy track and this intense lyric about her telling off her ex for how they act around others. 

"You just need to take several seats and then try to restore the peace / And control your urges to scream about all the people you hate" - You Need To Calm Down (Lover)

Shade doesn't make anyone different, and that's precisely the point Taylor Swift is making in “You Need To Calm Down,” as she sings about how all these haters really just need to take a seat and not scream so much.
