Seascape 18 Boat Reviews

Boat Review Date: February 2012 Author: Mike Brown Overview

In the heyday of trailer sailers, 30 and more years ago, cheapness and internal room with a few exceptions took priority over high quality and sailing ability. In particular, a minimal cockpit for a complement of say four in a tapered stern ensured a tail-dragging boat. The Seascape 18, a modern take on the concept, has the quality and ability, none of the drag, yet still at a modest price.

Seascape 18' Image 1

The Seascape actually has more in common with the current crop of sports boats than with the old trailer sailers, and, although there is nothing complicated about the rig, is capable of spirited performance. It certainly has the equipment for it: pentex working sails, carbon fibre spars, twin rudders, Ronstan roller bearing blocks, but with the cruising comfort of a furling headsail. At the same time, it really is possible to sleep on board. The fore cabin has a pair of bunks for tall people; there are no other traces of luxury, but the set-up is good enough for the occasional overnight pulled up on a beach.

Unlike a sports boat, the Seascape has a swing keel rather than a dagger board. Aside from the possible drag of the slot in the bottom there is no real difference in effectiveness; the keel, with its 125kg of ballast, is high aspect and long: lowering it increases draught from 0.15m to 1.3m. And, of course, if it hits the bottom there is no sudden stop.

Standing rigging is as simple as it could be: forestay and single shrouds with no spreaders, supporting a mast whose light weight makes it easy to step. The reefing bowsprit is also in carbon fibre – standard equipment includes a 32sqm gennaker. The bowsprit’s forward fitting carries a hoop for the mouth of a fabric launching chute. The whole system sits on deck, preventing water intruding into the cabin.

The cockpit comprises most of the boat, and there are few obstructions in it. The natural seating position is on the coaming, supplementing the ballast keel, and hiking straps are fitted to give extra leverage to the self-propelled ballast. But as is almost inevitable for sailing reviews, wind was light and getting lighter, so the straps were not needed.

What the light wind did show was what an easily driven craft the Seascape is. With gusts varying between three and six knots the average trailer sailer would have hovered between stationary and bare steerage way. The Seascape showed perceptible acceleration, and had the crew of three tuning the mainsheet and adjusting weight fore and aft. I want to be on board in 15 to 20 knots.

The hull form is reminiscent of a 49er, with large planing areas aft and a minimum resistance bow. The significant difference is the ballasted centerboard that removes the need for trapeze athletics. It struck me that this could be the boat for the owner, a decade or two along, who used to sail something like a Hobie 18 on the ocean. I found I was describing myself, the sort of owner who might cruise the coast inshore, or sail out to Garden Island on the easterly and return on the sea breeze.

It could be a club racing boat or a powerboat substitute. It does not have to be a purist’s yacht that stops when the wind does; an optional bracket takes an outboard motor. This is such an easily driven boat that the smallest of motors would do the job.

The price for this European yacht of the year in 2010 (it is built in Slovenia) is $33,000, to which you need to add the price of a trailer. It works out at a lot of fun per dollar.

Price                            $33,000 (without trailer)

Length overall               5.50m

Beam                           2.40m

Hull weight                   450kg

SEASCAPE 18: Evangelist Test Sail With Andraž Mihelin

' src=

How’s this for convenience? I get the word from SAIL HQ that I should look into test-sailing the Seascape 18 from Slovenia , recently revealed on these shores, and it turns out the new U.S. rep is based in Kittery, Maine, mere footsteps from my home. Even better, on arriving at the anointed moment last Friday at Pepperell Cove, where said rep, Toralf Strand, a tall gangly Norwegian fellow, has assembled both a Seascape 27 and 18 for test-sailing by prospective buyers and this one journalist, it turns out I’ll be sailing with Andraž Mihelin (see photo up top), one of the masterminds behind the whole Seascape concept.

Which is as follows: take the current hot monohull-racing hull-form–fine plumb bow, wide hindquarters, plus hard-chined topsides–and insert one super-simplified performance rig with simplified controls so that mere mortals can have fun knocking around and sailing fast without getting the pants scared off them.

Seascape, a new company formed by two hot-shot Mini-Transat racers (that would be Andraž and his buddy Kristian Hajnšek), introduced the 18 just over five years ago in Europe and already they’ve sold well over 300 boats and have fostered a burgeoning one-design racing scene. The 27 followed last year and looks to be just as successful. (You may recall I sailed the 27 last fall after the Annapolis show; you can read my review in the current print edition of SAIL .)

On the dock at Kittery. Note the aggressive hull form, a Volvo boat in miniature. Inside the cuddy cabin there’s a full-length double berth (plus a simple winch for controlling the centerboard). Note, too, the simple mainsheet controls: no traveler, just blocks and a bridle

Andraž loads the asymmetric spinnaker into its deck sock. It flies, of course, from the end of that long retractable bowsprit

Sailing with Andraž is like getting the gospel straight from the prophet’s mouth. He is alive with enthusiasm not only for the boats he builds, but for a whole new approach to having fun on sailboats that go fast.

“The idea behind Seascape,” he explains to me as we shoot away from the town dock in Kittery, “is to have 80 percent of the fun of sailing a Mini with 20 percent of the work.”

Convenience-wise, the boat is just that. The tubular carbon-fiber mast, which weighs just 30 pounds, is supported by a fractional headstay and two straight shrouds with no backstay or spreaders. Underwater foils consist of an easy-to-control centerboard (or swing keel, if you prefer) and two retractable rudders in cassettes. The whole boat weighs just a tad over 1,000 pounds, and it takes just a little over 20 minutes to get it from a trailer into the water fully rigged.

Andraž on the helm. He truly is a man with a mission

And yes, it is fun to sail. We’re having a blast cruising around off the mouth of the Piscataqua River while Andraž fills my head with his vision of what he wants to do with these boats. Races where you don’t call the course until you see what the conditions are, so you can be sure of making it interesting. Round-the-island time-trial competitions where skippers pick their start times. Global online “best game” competitions where skippers on boats with transponders post and compare their best 500-meter speed runs. These are all things he is already doing, or plans to do in the future.

Plus, of course, there is cruising, and he regales me with the tale of a young Austrian couple who sailed their Seascape 18 down the Danube River from Vienna all the way to the Black Sea, out the Dardanelles, through the Greek archipelago, and up to the top of the Adriatic, from whence they trailered it home to Vienna and thus completed a circumnavigation of southeastern Europe.

Cruising mode. You can easily beach the boat, plus there’s a simple tent you can pitch over the cockpit

Racing mode. More fun than humans should be allowed to have

Meanwhile, we’re seeing ideal test conditions. A building breeze that runs the gamut from 8 to 20 knots in gusts. We’re pulling the A-sail up and down–no fuss, no muss–in and out of its deck sock with its continuous halyard. Hitting over 10 knots on a hot reach. Cutting apparent wind angles well inside 25 degrees while sailing closehauled to weather. And when the gusts come through the top of the big square-headed main falls away, the mast bends a little in the right direction, and everything stays under control.

No panic. No near broaches. Nothing but the good stuff.

I’m thinking to myself: I like this guy. I believe in him. And I certainly like this boat.

Can’t wait to write it up for the comic.

That looks like fun! Can the rudders withstand a hard beaching?

@Tom: You pull the rudders up. They are fully retractable. I don’t think they’ll stand up to a hard grounding when they’re down.

BENETEAU FIRST AND FIRST SE (Seascape Edition)

Growing family.

We have been busy last months and today we are ready to show you what we have been working on. We are proud to present our new enlarged family.

We are excited to report that we are starting the new year with the first of the big news. A great shout out goes to our team that managed to launch three new models of sailboats and created two new distinct lines that clearly define the role of Seascape and its community of sailors in the future. We found the inspiration back in the eighties when BENETEAU brought the second generation of Firsts to life and with it a wide range of sailing experiences to every kind of sailors. First range of cruiser-racers answered the needs of those looking to escape to the sea for family holidays or go racing with friends over the weekend. First Class one-design racers offered racing on a level playing field. And on top of that, BENETEAU Wizz, an innovative dinghy designed by studio Finot, opened the door to sailing for everyone.

40 years later BENETEAU and Seascape joined forces to reinvent First for the new sailing era defined by accelerated innovation and progress. Focusing on the sailor and the sailing experience, we created two distinct lines, First and First SE – Seascape Edition, to answer the needs of two distinct kinds of sailors.

So today we present three new members of the 7th generation of FIRST. First 24 and 27 are exciting sports cruisers, while First 14 is an innovative dinghy that brings fun and exciting sailing to everyone.

seascape 18 sailboat

In addition, a new product line of First SE – Seascape Edition, consisting of four models: 14SE, 18SE, 24SE, and 27SE, was created. First SE is building on the legacy of Seascape boats and has the mission to bring modern one-design racing and adventure sailing in every sailor’s hands.

seascape 18 sailboat

AN ICONIC BRAND WITH 40 YEARS OF HERITAGE

The signature features of the First range have not changed since its conception in 1977. First models have always been designed for sailors who enjoy club racing as much as cruising, bringing in one single product line the best of both worlds. In 2021 BENETEAU is launching the new First 14, 24, and 27.

New Firsts are drawing power from the same exhilarating hulls designed by talented Samuel Manuard as their SE cousins while offering simpler systems, aluminum masts, more comfortable interiors, and cockpits geared towards daysailing and coastal cruising. Adapting to the different needs and expectations of a wide variety of users has always been a staple of the BENETEAU brand.

A DOUBLE-HANDED DINGHY FOR EVERYONE

First 14 building on the legendary BENETEAU Wizz legacy introduces the modern world of fast and planing dinghies to novice sailors, but not on account of safety nor control of the boat. She is a light, fast, and exciting dinghy designed with the sailor in mind. The promise of an accessible, easy-to-handle, and foremost, fun sailboat is fulfilled with the design, building technology and quality materials that also simplify maintenance.

She features furling and the self-tacking jib together with twin slot for the daggerboard allowing on-water transition from single-handed to double-handed mode. Safety and comfort are provided by wide and stable hull, spacious open-space cockpit free of tangled ropes. With easy-to-maintain deck equipment, aluminium rig and Dacron sails she brings hassle-free ownership. Integrated removable wheels and very light hull provide you with extra freedom, especially when you take her to new unexplored shores.

seascape 18 sailboat

THE PERFECT FAMILY DAYSAILER

A smart pocket cruiser, fun day-sailor or an exciting club racer all-in-one, she is keeping the First promise of modern performance sailing. She can easily sleep up to 4 persons but at the same time still delivers fun, planning sailing experience. A completely retractable keel gives you access to cruising spots you missed so far and a possibility to launch and recover your 24 on an ordinary slipway, opening new opportunities.

Light and stable hull together with the aluminium rig, classic backstay and Dacron sails make it an ideal weekender and holiday cruiser. The open-space interior is based on huge sleeping surfaces and offers innovative solutions for the toilette, storage, and living space transformation. Winch operated deep composite/lead retractable keel, and removable rudder blades give you access to as little as 30cm of water while keeping the boat fast and stable while sailing.

seascape 18 sailboat

AN EIGHT-METER CRUISER FOR THE NEW ERA

She is the fastest and safest cruiser of her size. First 27 delivers fun and modern planing sailing thanks to modern design and building technologies. Families and couples will love taking her cruising, she will transform a light or strong wind day into a great sailing experience, and she will win trophies on the club races.

Being true to her pocket Yacht description, the 27 offers inboard Yanmar engine, separated Marine toilet, galley, fridge and up to 6 berths. Coachroof and hull windows together with big deck hatches bring a generous amount of light into the saloon while cockpit benches and removable table make living outdoors comfortable. Aluminium rig with classic backstay and dacron sails simplify life with the 27. On the other hand, her striking performance is ballanced by number of safety features, including the deep, 1.7-meter lead fixed keel, twin rudders, and insubmersibility volumes.

seascape 18 sailboat

FIRST 18 SE

The enabler of growth.

The First 18 SE formerly known as Seascape 18 is a sailboat for people who want to start exploring sailing and grow into well-versed sailors weather in one design club racing or adventure sailing. With well over 500 owners of First 18 SE – Seascape Edition worldwide, she proves she is a perfect sport boat for recreational sailors who would like to challenge themselves in well-established one-design class. Her wide flat hull and twin rudders cannot hide the offshore DNA which offers complete control even when planing at double-digit speeds. Boat handling and deck organisation are simplified as much as possible with a snuffer system, furling jib and carbon mast without backstays. It has a small, but still large enough cabin to accommodate two adults. A large open cockpit small, and a small cabin with big double berth makes it an ideal sea camping platform. Fully retractable swinging keel and removable rudder blades will give you access to the shallowest bays. Being easily trailable and dismantled, she would fulfil racing ambitions in international one-design class as well as adventurous sea-camping.

seascape 18 sailboat

FIRST 24 SE

Light, fast, simple and versatile.

From expanding your comfort zone in solo adventure racing to taking your family on adventure holidays, the First 24 SE – Seascape Edition covers it all. She is a modern high-tech sport cruiser, delivering thrilling performance and an exciting sailing experience. Her carbon rig not only reduces the weight aloft but also removes the need for a backstay. This significantly simplifies manoeuvres and allows the boat to carry a sizeable square-top mainsail. This results in a combination of very high sail area / displacement ratio which allows sailors to have fun in the lightest wind.

Being trailerable and slip-launchable together with the smart system to raise the mast even single-handed allows 24SE to change sailing regions with great ease. An important feature that enables its main strength –  the calendar of one-design events ranging from fully crewed windward-leeward to single-handed adventure races and the community of owners, gathered around them. After the race, she will welcome you with a basic but smart interior, offering all cruising amenities for four persons. No matter the mode, she is a pure sailing sensation.

seascape 18 sailboat

FIRST 27 SE

First 27 SE brings high-tech performance, events and community know-how from the cutting edge of offshore racing into the hands of recreational sailors. She delivers extraordinary sailing experience up to today reserved for professional racers. The Samuel Manuard designed all-weather, vacuum infused one-design offshore racer and adventure cruiser is built entirely in sandwich construction. That helped make her the only offshore one-design class sailboat than can be towed on the road without special permissions and allowed over 160 owners to gather on long-distance races around Europe and USA. Picking up some trophies like doublehanded Chicago-Mackinac and Silverrudder victories on the way. Sailors can challenge themselves on one-design long-distance races or enjoy fast adventure cruises in the best sailing spots. Marine toilet, up to 6 berths with separated front cabin, optional galley and a fridge combined with other practicalities make her an ultimate adventure cruiser for sailing connoisseurs.

WHY FIRST 18 SE ?

seascape 18 sailboat

EASY HANDLING

She can be easily  sailed by a crew from 1 to 3 persons thanks to the large and clean cockpit, the furling jib, the gennaker snuffer system, high boom and a mast without a backstay, which allows for a bigger square-top mainsail.

The One Design racing calendar comprises of fully crewed windward-leeward races to adventurous long-distance double-handed or solo challenges. Whichever you choose, you can count on the friendly community of like-minded sailors.

GO ANYWHERE

A retractable keel, removable rudders blades and a light carbon mast make First 18 SE truly trailable and slip-launchable, which will enable you to discover new places, attend international events and meet new sailors.

First 18 SE is one of the safest in her category. Insumbersibility chambers make her unsinkable, a swinging keel prevents structural damage in case of grounding and twin rudders give you complete control for safe downwind planing.

SAILING EXPERIENCE

First 18 SE delivers a dinghy-like sailing experience but on a more stable and safer platform, thanks to the wide and flat hull shape and deep-ballasted swinging keel. Twin rudders ensure complete control even when planing at double-digit speeds. Boat handling and deck controls are simplified as much as possible for the best sailing experience. The jib is furling, the gennaker is easily operated with a snuffer system and a carbon mast without a backstay supports the powerful square-top mainsail, which ensures fast sailing even in light wind conditions. Thanks to its ergonomic and spacious open cockpit, the boat can be easily sailed solo or with 2 or even up to 3 crew members.

On challenging regattas or joyful day sailings, you'll always have a chance to explore, learn and grow with the boat's potential.

LIVING ONBOARD

Despite being small, First 18 SE cabin can still accommodate up to two adults in a sea-camping manner. Front V-berth is decently sized for 5,55 m boat and with smart crew bags for personal belongings and technical storage under the cockpit spacious enough for all the technical equipment. Traditional comfort might be limited, but she can get you into the most unreachable places you've never discovered before and connect you with the elements like no other boat. Large open cockpit makes her an ideal family sea camping platform and offers direct access to the sea in cruising mode. Fully retractable swinging keel and removable rudder blades will give you access to the shallowest bays you've missed so far.

It was almost dark when I stepped from the ever-balancing hull of my Seascape 18 onto the dock in Svendborg. To my surprise, the familiar cocktail of relief, elation, sadness, joy, and overwhelming sensation of accomplishment started to kick in.

First 18-2 (Beneteau)

First 18-2 (Beneteau) is a 18 ′ 2 ″ / 5.6 m monohull sailboat designed by Samual Manuard and built by Seascape starting in 2008.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

in 2018 Beneteau purchased a controlling stake in the Slovenian builder Seascape, bringing all Seascape models into the fold of its First range. Asym SA: 32 sqm / 344.45 sq ft Bowsprit: 1.4m / 4.59 ft Displacement above = light. Short keel weight: 145 kg / 320 lbs.
