Awesome fishing experience, would definitely recommend suFISHient Charters. We enjoyed fresh baked cookies prepared by Jeff’s wife while heading out. Jeff and his first mate Mark set out multiple lines and my husband, my dad and I were reeling in Salmon in no time! While tending the lines and netting our fish, they gave us great advice and three new Salmon recipes to try. Before we knew it, we had caught our limit and were heading back in feeling like pros. Went fishing for the first time With my wife and teen boys. Jeff was very knowledgeable and patient with our first timer questions. Our family had an amazing experience. Jeff provided exact instructions on what to expect and what to bring and what to leave behind. He was ready at 6 am on a chilly morning with a big smile. He kept chatting with the boys providing hints and tips on the do’s and don’ts. We ended up catching 9 trouts and were very happy with our catch. To sweeten the experience at the end Jeff brought out a caramel peanut rice cake that his wife had graciously baked. Thanks Jeff! My son and I went out with SuFISHient last week while on vacation. They have a very nice boat with lots of room to fish. We had a great time with the team. The captain is very good with his boat and works hard to get us into the places where the fish are. He knows a lot about fishing in that area and what is biting and what the fish like. We caught a good number of fish and several of them being quite large. We were right on the brink of great Salmon season and managed to catch a few of these fish. I highly recommend this company for fishing on Lake Michigan.

Report shows West Michigan is a hub for this growing industry, with potential for more

HOLLAND — A recent report shows that West Michigan, including Holland, has become a hub for advanced energy storage production — such as batteries for electric vehicles — with potential for additional future growth.

The West Michigan Advanced Energy Storage Ecosystem Report was compiled by Lakeshore Advantage, The Right Place and Greater Muskegon Economic Development. It shows potential for growth in the cell and pack assembly stages of the AES supply chain.

A recent announcement by Governor Gretchen Whitmer that LT Precision Michigan, LLC was establishing its North American headquarters in Holland was the latest indicator of local growth in the sector.

“Michigan is a pivotal location in the automotive industry within the U.S,” said LT Precision Michigan President Wonseok Yang. “As one of LG’s partners and a provider for many different companies, we want to ensure that we provide stable supply and satisfaction to our clients by choosing Holland.”

AES end-use products include EV batteries, grid and stationary energy storage and national defense applications. The recent report shows West Michigan now boasts nearly two dozen businesses providing solutions or products across the supply chain.

According to the report, a third of all U.S. battery manufacturing takes place in Michigan, and the state is ranked sixth in the nation for EV battery manufacturing employment.

Amanda Murray, vice president of business solutions for Lakeshore Advantage, said the report is already generating buzz in the industry, which she hopes will continue to attract companies to the area.

“We met recently with a West Michigan chemical producer that was looking at entering the AES market and was considering locations outside the region,” Murray said. “When we shared the report, they saw the possibilities here. It’s a tool we can use to our businesses that West Michigan is a smart investment.”

In one of the more unique ways of celebrating St. Patrick's Day, the Chicago River will be dyed green on Saturday, March 16, at 10 a.m. CT.

The parade will be held the same day and start a few hours after the river dyeing, around 12:15 p.m. ET.

The 119th-annual South Boston St. Patrick's Day parade will be on Sunday, March 17, beginning at 1 p.m. ET. The parade is held by the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council and always falls on the Sunday closest to St. Patrick's Day.

The parade also celebrates Evacuation Day , a local Massachusetts holiday commemorating when British forces left Boston during the Revolutionary War on March 17, 1776.

The 2024 parade also marks the 200th anniversary of the celebration in Savannah.

2024 Michigan Miss Basketball: Gabby Reynolds, Holland West Ottawa

When Gabby Reynolds was a freshman, she asked Holland West Ottawa girls basketball coach Paul Chapman if she could wear jersey No. 1.

There was no No. 1 jersey, so Reynolds chose No. 3.

“It was the next closest jersey number to No. 1,” she said.

Before this season, Chapman ordered a No. 1 jersey but didn’t tell her about it until he pulled it out of the closet midway through this season.

Reynolds already was having an outstanding season, but Chapman saw even more than that in the 5-foot-9 senior point guard.

“If you’re a Miss Basketball candidate, you’ve got to be like a No. 1-type player,” he told her when he handed her the jersey. “It was just a little mind game thing.”

The mind game kind of worked. In nine of the next 10 games, Reynolds scored at least 30 points, including a 47-point effort.

Last week, Reynolds’ father, Keith, was speaking to Chapman on the phone and when he hung up, Reynolds asked: “What was that all about?”

“Follow me,” he told her.

His wife, LeeAnne, was in Gabby’s room and as he spoke, he pointed to Gabby and told his wife:

“You’re looking at Miss Basketball.”

Gabby Reynolds is the 43rd recipient of the Mick McCabe Miss Basketball award, given annually to the top senior in the state.

In one of the closest races in history, Reynolds totaled 2,370 points while second-place Lily Zeinstra of Byron Center earned 2,313. Plymouth Salem’s Madison Morson was third with 1,740 points with Indya (1,722) and Summer (1,521) Davis of West Bloomfield rounding out the finalists.

Only BCAM members are permitted to vote and must vote for three candidates. Points awarded on a 5-3-1 basis. Zeinstra had the most first-place votes, 290 to 281 for Reynolds, but Reynolds had 258 second-place votes to 224 for Zeinstra. They each had 191 third-place votes.

Didn't know she had it in her

 Reynolds was surprised to find out she won, and she tossed and turned most of the night.

“I did not get to bed until 1:30,” she said. “I couldn’t fall asleep. I kept thinking I ... I did not expect that. I was excited and hoped I got it, obviously. I just didn’t know for sure. I knew every girl that I was competing with I knew they were really, really good competitors. I didn’t know who was going to get it.”

A signee with George Washington, Reynolds understands this award doesn’t guarantee future stardom, but is a reflection of what she has done in high school, averaging 29.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists.

“Awards don’t say everything about a person, but it shows how hard you work and how great a basketball player you are,” she said. “I’ve never been too concerned about it, but when I first found out about it three years ago, I really wanted to get to that level to know that I am a really good basketball player, and I think that’s what it shows.”

When asked, most parents of Miss Basketball winners say they could tell from an early age that their daughter could be in the running for this award. Not so with Keith Reynolds.

“That’s a hard question because of Gabb’s journey,” he said. “I think, probably it was real late in the game. Gabb’s always been competitive, she’s always aspired to be the best at what she tries to do.”

Reynolds is one of six children, following two older sisters and an older brother.

“My first and second daughters were not into sports at all,” Keith said. “So when Gabb was young and started saying, 'will you teach me to do some basketball,' I told her she wasn’t really interested in it.”

Unbeknownst to her father, Gabby did not listen to him, which he discovered a few years later.

“One day, I walked in the gym and saw her doing some sophisticated dribbling, and she was 10,” he said. “I told myself I didn’t want to be the dad that goes down in her mind as indifferent or disengaged.”

Keith, who played college football, still didn’t take it too seriously until his daughter played AAU for the first time as a freshman in high school.

“That first live period, she was creating a buzz with her play,” he said. “After the very first live period, our phone started blowing up and she got her very first Division I offer.”

Chapman first spotted Reynolds at his camp when she was in middle school. Back then, her dreams exceeded her talent level.

But her enthusiasm for the game was unparalleled.

“She was a kid that literally loved basketball and she talked about playing in college someday,” he said. “You hear a middle school kid talking like that you say: ‘Yeah, good dream.’ “

She soon began improving at a steady pace and by the time she reached high school her dream to play college basketball didn’t seem so farfetched.

“She plays with more force than most girls do; she’s really strong,” Chapman said. “She really goes hard to the basket. She’s able to get her shot off with contact. I’ve been coaching boys and girls for over 40 years and she works harder than anybody I’ve ever had. The other day before we left for the game, she was shooting for 45 minutes.

“She’s very skilled because she’s worked on her game.”

Summer growth spurt

 Reynolds’ improvement has been steady, but it took off last spring and summer.

“Honestly, I think the biggest leap was from my junior year to my senior year,” she said. “I’ve played a lot more aggressive. I think my mentality has really changed this year. It’s not about my stats or anything, but doing what I need to do to get my team to win.”

West Ottawa is 20-6 and has a quarterfinal game against defending Division 1 state champ Rockford at Grandville at 7 p.m. Tuesday. She has done much to help the Panthers win.

Part of that may be due to her now wearing jersey No. 1, like she wanted to, back as a freshman.

“I wanted that for the same reason that my coach was telling me after he switched me to No. 1, that if you’re No. 1 you have to play like you’re No. 1,” she said. “I want to play like I’m the best player on the court.

“That’s not supposed to be in an arrogant way, but I always want to play to the best of my abilities. That’s what the No. 1 stands for to me.”

And being Miss Basketball stands for something else to Reynolds, something much bigger than just her.

“For the most part I think it will change the influence I have over little kids,” she said. “I think that’s one of the things I’m most proud of. Once little girls in this area that dream about playing basketball can see that another girls from Ottawa County area, it will really change perspective and help little girls.”

Migrant boat sinks off Turkish Aegean coast, killing at least 22 people

Turkish officials say they have found the bodies of 22 people, including seven children, off Gokceada island.

At least 22 people, including several children, have died after the rubber dinghy they were travelling on capsized off the Turkish island of Gokceada in the Aegean Sea.

“The Turkish coastguard found the bodies of 22 people including seven children,” the local governor’s office said in a statement on Friday.

Information on the victims’ nationalities has not yet been released.

Governor Ilhami Aktas told the state-run Anadolu Agency that the Turkish coastguard rescued two people from the sea off the town of Eceabat in Canakkale province, while two others were able to reach the shore by themselves,

Turkish officials said the boat began sinking overnight and that many ambulances were standing by at the port of Kabatepe near Gokceada. The search-and-rescue operation was also backed by one plane, two helicopters, one drone, 18 boats and 502 personnel.

The Turkish coastguard also said that it had rescued or intercepted several hundred people, including children, attempting to cross to Greece since the start of the week.

At least 3,129 deaths and disappearances have been recorded in the Mediterranean since 2017, making it the deadliest route for migrants and refugees, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Many migrants try to reach the Greek islands from Turkey’s western coasts to head to prosperous European Union countries, with many dying in the perilous sea crossing.

The issue of irregular migration is a thorn in relations between NATO members Turkey and Greece, who are already embroiled in longstanding disputes from exploratory drilling rights in the eastern Mediterranean to the divided island of Cyprus.

Greece has also frequently accused Turkey of waving migrants through their joint border and at sea.

Ankara in turn has accused Athens of illegal pushbacks of migrant boats. In 2016, Turkey struck a deal with the EU to curb the influx of people seeking refuge in the EU in return for financial assistance and other incentives.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited Athens in December, Turkey and Greece agreed to open a new page in their troubled relations and address their problems including irregular migration through dialogue.

The issue of irregular migration is likely to figure highly in talks when Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visits Ankara in May.
