How to learn the year of your Lone Star boat....

According to this post, http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=400436&page=1 this is how you identify the year of your Lone Star: "finding the hull ID plate located on the rear (aft) starboard (right) side of the boat it will be about a 1-1/2"-2" tall and about 4"-5" long plate with a number punched into it, the 1st number in the string is the year of manufacture, IE: "9" equals 1959, "0" equals 1960 so on and so forth"

Re: How to learn the year of your Lone Star boat.... My Lone Star Chrysler Commander ser.#16913411 is it a 51 or 61 model. This was my grandfather's boat and on some of his paper work I just found shows it is a 1967 model and ser# 6913411 but the ser# plate shows #16913411. Any info on this boat and series would be great. Thanks, snapzip61

Re: How to learn the year of your Lone Star boat.... I'm not sure since I was only passing on the information, but if I were to hazard a guess, I would say that yours is indeed a 1967 model, but built in 1966 for release in 1967. If your paperwork or boat have anything on them that indicates that it is a "Lone Star Chrysler Commander" as you say, then it must be a 1967 model, since Crysler did't purchase Lone Star until May of 1965. See http://www.fiberglassics.com/library/Lone_Star As I say, this is all guesswork based on the research that I have done, but it seems authentic to me. Soul

I have a chance to pick up what I think is a Lone Star boat local to me for $375 with the trailer. My question is, is this in fact a Lone Star, and due to the OBC sticker missing, What HP could it handle safely? I have a 45 HP Chrysler I could put on it, but I am unsure if it could handle that much. I believe it is 14′ long.
It obviously needs some work before it will be nice, but I feel like for 375 and me already having a motor it could be a decent boat.

The handles on the transom casting make it look like it might be a Starcraft.

I think you are right. There are stars on the castings so my mind went to lone Star. But StarCraft obviously makes sense too
Starcraft corner brace castings that I have seen are angled across the top from the ends of the brace to form a triangle if you look straight down on them. These castings have a big radius on the inside. It is possible this is not always the case, but I do not think those corner braces are Starcraft. My ’86 14 foot Starcraft did not have stars on top of the castings either. I’m leaning toward it being Lone Star also, but I can’t say for sure. -Ben

Transom corners on my 1958 Starcraft.
I did snap a pic of the corners as a matter of fact
The shape of the wood outside the transom also looks like Starcraft.
Boat, Looks to me you need a new transom. Please use marine grade plywood & epoxy grade laminating resin. My first transom failed because I used cheap materials. I laminated plywood & used woven roven type glass cloth. I saturated the wood & next placed the cloth, wetted the cloth & added another layer of wood & clamped. I did this a few times to get the thickness I needed. Everything went well except I used the cheap resin & wood. I drilled a few 5/16" holes & used all thread to clamp in the areas where a clamp would not function. Oh don’t forget to wax the bolts so you can remove them later. Get a cheap candle & heat the wax then dip the hardware in the wax & let cool before using.
Not sure which model your boat is, but Fiberglassics lists some late 1950s 14 foot Starcraft runabouts as being rated for 40 hp. Those were probably the old "big" hp numbers taken at the crank. Dunno where your Chrysler was rated, crank or propshaft, but it could be a little too much power for your boat’s transom. Make the new transom good and strong and you’ll probably be OK. Keep an eye on the transom knee rivets through the transom after you have run it a bit.
