Schooner Nina

The story of the famous Schooner Nina, and the crew of 7 who lost their lives on its final voyage

Schooner Nina and her crew

Introduction

The Schooner Niña is famous as a boat that transformed ocean racing yacht design. Prior to its construction in 1928, ocean racing was dominated by gaff-rigged ‘fisherman’ schooners, many named after their designer, John Alden. Nina was a narrower and deeper-hulled boat rigged with a Marconi main sail with staysails forward, and it signaled the future of yacht design by winning its first race (New York to Santander) followed in short order by the Fastnet race (in the Irish Sea and English Channel) – the first American yacht to do so.

But the Niña will be remembered for its final voyage, where tragically its crew of seven are presumed to have lost their lives when the Niña disappeared on a voyage from New Zealand across the Tasman Sea to Australia.  The largest search in the history of RCCNZ (Rescue Coordination Centre, New Zealand), followed by months of searching organized by relatives of the crew, failed to find any trace of the vessel and crew, or any wreckage. June 4 th 2013 marks the date of this greatest loss of life in recreational boating history.

The History of Schooner Niña

Designer: W. Starling Burgess.   Built by: Reuben Bigalow Ship Yard, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA .

Year Built: 1928                        Original Owner: Paul Hammond

Burgess “Nina” Specifications: Overall length 70’0”/21.33m. Length on deck 59’0”/17.98m Water Line length 50’0″/15.24m Beam 14’10”/4.52m Draft 9’7”/2.92m. Displacement 44 tons. Sail Area: 2,275 sq ft Foremast: 65′ 0″ / 19.81m – Mainmast: 85′ 0″ / 25.90m

Race history

Known Racing History:

1928 Winner New York to Santander, Spain. 3,900 mile race in 24 days, greeted by King Alfonso from his launch, with “Well sailed, Niña, I congratulate you! I am the King of Spain.” Niña then went to England for the 600 mile Fastnet Race which takes place through the stormy waters of the English Channel and the Irish Sea. She became the first American yacht to win that race. Her overall time was 4 days, 12 hours, 48 minutes, 13 seconds. 1929 Winner London to Gibson Island Chesapeake Bay. Niña had one more major win, the 1929 race from London to Gibson Island Chesapeake Bay. She was temporarily retired as owner, Paul Hammond, became involved in the 1930 Americas Cup race.

1939 Winner New York Yacht Club Astor Cup, and 1940 Winner New York Yacht Club Astor Cup. In 1934, New York banker, DeCoursey Fales bought Niña, and each year of his life he became more and more devoted to her. He would talk for hours about the ‘old girl’. The rest of Niña’s career was probably fore-ordained as she won the New York Yacht Club Astor Cup in 1939 and 1940. Just before WWII, she won for the first time an event that was to become her specialty, the 233 mile Stanford-Vineyard Race on Long Island Sound. Afterward, she was laid up for the duration of the war. Niña was not allowed to rot, however, and she came out after the war in better shape than ever for a three year stint as flag ship for the New York Yacht Club.

1949 Winner Cygnet Cup Mr. Fales became the NYYC commodore in 1949, and Niña earned her honors by taking first place in ¾ of the yacht club’s squadron races as well as winning the Cygnet Cup in 1949. She made such a habit of winning races that Commodore Fales put the trophies back in competition. It became almost a stock joke that Niña would proceed to win back her own trophies! 1962 Winner Newport to Bermuda Race. In 1962 to thunderous cheers, Niña, became the oldest yacht at 34 years to win the Newport to Bermuda Race, under 72 year old Commodore Fales (the oldest skipper in the race!). In 1966, then 78 year old Commodore Fales passed away while his crew was attempting to repeat the Bermuda win. Niña had five owners after Fales, one being Kings Point Academy. 1989 Winner New York Mayors Cup 1994 Winner Antigua (Schooner Class) 2012 Winner New Zealand’s 37th Tall Ships and Classic Invitation

Ownership and Restoration, from mid 90’s

Nina was purchased in 1988 by David N. and Rosemary Dyche. They undertook much restoration to the vessel. A new deck took 3 years to complete and was finished in 1997. Photos of some of the restoration can be seen here http://www.sail-world.com/111389 .

In September 2008, the Dyche family, including David junior, began circumnavigating.

A replacement engine was fitted and trialled in Opua, shortly before starting the fateful last voyage.

The final voyage

On 29 th May 2013, the Historic American Schooner Niña, with a crew of seven, left Opua, New Zealand on a planned voyage to Newcastle, Australia. On 4 th June 2013, contact with the vessel was lost.

This treatise documents everything known about the vessel, the crew, the journey, and the search for the vessel following loss of communication.

An update from Robin Wright

A message from Robin Wright :

Ricky and I are wrapping up our visit to Australia and New Zealand in the next 2 weeks. It’s hard to even think about coming home without Danielle, but we’ve done everything we know to do to search for Nina and 7 very special people. We know they can survive whatever the Tasman throws at them with God’s hand of protection covering them. Please keep all the family members and the crew in your thoughts and prayers as we continue to wait for our loved ones to resurface. Here’s a few photos in New Zealand and Australia…

Niña Crew Not Ready to Give Up

TV New Zealand news story. Update on how we are continuing the search effort and looking for answers from Officials. http://tvnz.co.nz/national-news/family-missing-nina-crew-not-ready-give-up-5816913/video

Message from Robin Wright :

Thank you Jehan Casinader and Lee Frashier for covering our story and for taking us to Whangarei and Opua. It was a little disappointing that the broadcast seemed to suggest that we expect New Zealanders to foot the bill for our continued search for 7 precious lives. The fact is that we, with the help of many, many concerned people from all over the world, have raised and spent over $600,000 on private searches so far, and all of that money was spent in New Zealand and Australia. We and other family members have taken money from our personal savings, even Danielle’s college fund, to attempt to locate Nina as we believe she is still drifting. The boat in the satellite image looks just like Nina, and was found out in the middle of the Tasman where experts told us Nina should be. It’s time for RCCNZ to provide the families with the technical data used in their determination that the satellite image is “not likely Nina” so we can have closure on this issue. But if that satellite image is of the Nina and RCCNZ did not go out and rescue the crew as is their responsibility, we will know the truth soon enough when Nina drifts to shore and the crew can verify their location on September 16th. Evi Nemeth is certainly charting their course and we will be able to see exactly where Nina drifted all these months.

Praying for God’s provision and protection over our loved ones!

Air search now by Australian pilots volunteering to help locate the schooner Nina and its crew of 7.

The Wrights, parents of Danielle Wright remain in Australia to assist in the air seacrh efforts.

New Zealand ocean systems has now offered to assist in the currents and winds models.

Hope is what this search is all about: we need your help to get the resources back out there to search.

There needs to be serious improvements in the manner that search and rescue managers and agencies manage their day to day jobs. This includes serious changes to honor the common practices to search early not late.

The Story of La Niña

La Niña, also known as ‘the little one,’ was famously the ship that housed Christopher Columbus’s cabin. In her early years, Niña was fitted with Latin sails; but then after that, she was equipped with square sails. Since Niña was such a small vessel, she was highly agile and manoeuvrable, but required a sturdy ballast to withstand the rough seas.

Columbus used Niña on his first voyage to the West Indies, in 1492. At the time, it was tradition for Spanish ships to bear female Saint’s names, and so she was called Santa Clara. However, the ship was commonly referred to as La Niña, which could have been an inside joke referring to the owner, Juan Niño.

Alongside La Niña throughout Columbus’ expedition were the Pinta, which was a caravel-type vessel much like La Niña, and the carrack-type Santa Maria. A carrack is typically an ocean-going ship with three or four sails.

- See Above: Christopher Columbus bidding farewell to Isabella I, the Queen of Spain, on his departure for the New World, August 3, 1492.

As previously mentioned, Niña was fitted with Latin sails at first, but was later re-rigged with square sails for optimised performance in the ocean. Whilst there isn’t much, if any accurate documentation of Niña’s design, the ship is thought to have weighed around 60 tonnes, with a 15-metre deck. There are conflicting accounts regarding the number of sails Niña had, with some claiming there to have been three, and others four.

On Christopher Columbus’ first voyage, La Niña carried a crew of 26 men, and she was captained by Vincente Yanez Pinzon, a famed Spanish navigator. He departed from Palos de la Frontera with his three ships, and he was actually aboard the Santa Maria, the largest of the three.

It was on the 7 th October 1492 that the crew spotted a flock of birds, signifying their proximity to land, and a few days later the captain of the Pinta, Martin Alonso Pinzon, confirmed the land sighting and signalled Columbus. Columbus would go on to state he had already spotted the land, and so he’d be given the lifetime pension promised to whomever first saw land by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella.

Christopher Columbus named this island San Salvador, and it’s now known as the Bahamas. He called the inhabitants Indians, and was curious in regard to their golden ear ornaments. He later imprisoned the locals, and forced them to guide him to the source of the gold. Columbus also noted how primitive they were in terms of warfare, and is believed to have said, “The people here are simple in war-like matters… I could conquer the whole of them with fifty men, and govern them as I pleased.”

After this, Columbus ventured to the northern coast of Cuba in late October, before journeying to Hispaniola in December. The Santa Maria ran aground on Christmas Day of that year, and there was no other choice but to abandon her. Columbus decided to use the wreckage as a source for target practice for their cannons, to impress the local people. A native chieftain, Guacanagari, accepted Columbus and granted him permission to leave some of his men behind. Christopher Columbus then founded the settlement of La Navidad, in present-day Haiti.

His last stop of the voyage was in the Bay of Rincon, in northeast Hispaniola. This was in January of 1493, and here he encountered the Ciguayos; the only group of natives who were violently resistant towards Columbus and his men.

Columbus then set sail for Spain, and La Niña was almost capsized in February 1493, in the east of the Azores. This is a small archipelago in the North Atlantic, around 900 miles west of Portugal’s capital, Lisbon. A storm was tossing the ship across the waves, and Columbus subsequently ordered his crew to take a series of vows to perform specific acts when they returned to Spain, such as religious pilgrimages. A month later, on the 4 th March 1493, La Niña reached Lisbon.

la nina yacht

- See Above: A map highlighting the route of Christopher Columbus’ first expedition.

Six months after this, La Niña found herself joining a fleet of seventeen ships for the second journey to Hispaniola, in the Caribbean. She became the flagship for the exploration of Cuba, the biggest island of them all, and was subsequently the only ship to withstand the 1495 hurricane. She later returned to Spain in 1496.

Niña’s next journey was an unauthorised voyage to Italy’s capital, Rome. The ship was captured by pirates when disembarking from Cagliari, and was then taken to Sardinia. Niña’s captain at the time, Alonso Medel, managed to escape from the pirates with a few of his men. He stole a small boat, rowed back to La Niña, and he and the remaining crew then sailed to Cadiz.

La Niña returned to Hispaniola in 1498, serving as an advance guard of Christopher Columbus’ third voyage. In 1500, she set sail from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and then in 1501, she made a trading voyage to the Pearl Coast on the island of Cubagua, in Venezuela. After this, there’s no log of La Niña’s travel, but it’s thought she registered approximately 25,000 nautical miles under the command of Christopher Columbus.

- See Above: Some model renditions of La Niña.

Premier Ship Models offer a selection of fantastic model ship replicas of La Niña. They’re all terrific recreations of the real-life counterpart, and serve as wonderful conversation pieces for enthusiasts of historical ships, expeditions and Christopher Columbus alike.

The jets reduce noise and vibration, add impressive maneuverability, and reduce hull draft. Lady Nina draws just 4.5 feet, making it perfect for exploring shallow waters in the Bahamas and Caribbean. The equipment also gives the Maiora astonishing stopping ability. Though not recommended, it can “crash stop” from top speed to zero in just a single boat length. You just have to pick up a lot of things that flew off the shelves inside the boat.

“It’s a yacht with two personalities. She’s spacious for relaxed family cruising, yet has the power and speed to get places quickly,” Isabella Pico, head of communications for the Italian-based Next Yacht Group, on a tour of the boat at the Fort Lauderdale boat show.

Viareggio-based Maiora, while better known a decade ago in the U.S. market, is making a comeback. Founded in the 1970s, the builder and its sister companies AB Yachts and CBI Navi, are part of the Next Yacht Group, which came under new ownership in 2021, with strong financial backing to help grow its boat brands.

Designed in-house at Maiora, the Exuma—priced new starting around $18.5 million—is distinguished by its vertical bow, a short, almost stubby foredeck, a big open stern and a top-deck sky lounge. Designed in-house, the yacht is also unusual in that it has an asymmetric deck layout to increase interior space. That means there’s only a teak-decked walkway on the port side.

“Big interior volumes are what sets the yacht apart,” says Pico. “The owner wanted to enjoy life aboard with his large family and give everyone their space. Many of his requests make the yacht more livable.”

That includes the innovative top-deck sky lounge. While it can be a completely enclosed, air-conditioned space, at the touch of a few buttons the side windows lower, the forward windshield drops down, the sliding-glass rear doors open, and an almost full-length roof panel opens up.

The owner, who typically steers the yacht from the upper deck, wanted the opening version because he likes easy conversations with anyone on the top deck. The sky lounge also has a 10-person dining table, a well-equipped outdoor galley, and a large open rear deck with movable sofas and chairs.

On the main deck, the owners’ suite is designed across the yacht’s 25’7” beam, with near floor-to-ceiling windows. In the connecting en suite are separate his-and-hers glassed-in shower stalls. The lower deck, meanwhile, holds four other cabins, including an oversize VIP spacious enough on other boats this size to be the master suite.

Up in the main salon, the space is designed for kicking back, relaxing, and watching television. There’s no formal dining area here, with the rear deck doubling as an alfresco dining spot. Possibly the most “formal” feature is the custom-built cooler for the owner’s expansive tequila collection.

One especially novel feature is the flood-able garage that’s big enough to hold a 21-foot Williams Dieseljet 625 tender, while a high-lifting section of the rear deck raises-up to reveal a second garage for Lady Nina’s collection of water toys, plus an 11-foot RIB.

Lady Nina Maoira Yachts

Lady Nina’s cruising sweet-spot of 12 mph, says Pico, delivers a range of 1,600 nautical miles.

If a 40 mph top end isn’t enough, a prospective owner could always choose triple 2,600 hp MTU diesels. Top speed then rockets to a positively zippy 46 mph.

75' La Nina

This exceptional project is presently under construction at Metur Yachts in Bodrum, Turkey. She is being built with a PVC foam cored hull and deck using a combination of epoxy glass and carbon. La Nina's superstructure is modelled in one piece, which represents a unique styling element. Her hull is reminiscent of the Volvo 70s and her lifting keel, stowed below the floorboard, reduces the draught from 4.40 to 2.90 m. The interior concept includes a large Mediterranean-style open cockpit with a vast aft deck area. A large sunbathing platform extending across the full beam of the transom will slide out of the hull to create a beach platform. A boarding ladder will be incorporated that can double as a swimming platform. La Nina's interior is based on luxury cruising for two couples and includes one separate crew cabin.

Chances of a weather-roiling la niña this year are now above 80%, it can also bring drought to california and south america.

la nina yacht

By Brian K. Sullivan

The odds of a weather-roiling La Niña in the coming months are rising, elevating the risk of an unusually active Atlantic hurricane season.

The chances of La Niña, a cooling of the equatorial Pacific, rose to 82% for August, September and October, the US Climate Prediction Center said. Last month there was a 74% chance.

“The numbers edged upwards, not dramatically, and the timing still seems to be the same as to what we were predicting last month,” said Michelle L’Heureux, a forecaster with the center.

La Niña can lead to droughts in South America and California and more rain across parts of Indonesia and Australia. Currently a strong El Niño , or warming in the Pacific, is winding down. La Niñas often follow intense El Niños because of a phenomenon known as discharge, when heat on the equator migrates toward the poles and cold deep-ocean waters rise to take its place.

La Niña is coming: It could worsen hurricane season and affect US weather, forecasters say

la nina yacht

La Niña is still on track to form this year, government forecasters announced Thursday morning, giving the climate pattern a 62% chance of developing during the upcoming summer months (June-August).

Among other impacts, the emergence of La Niña could help boost the severity of the Atlantic hurricane season , a typical byproduct of the pattern.

Forecasters also reported that the recent strong El Niño remains in effect, but is weakening and expected to transition to "ENSO-neutral" conditions over the next few months.

The entire El Niño/La Niña cycle  is known as the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and its three phases (El Niño, La Niña, and ENSO-neutral), can  affect weather in the U.S. and around the world .

What is La Niña?

La Niña is a natural climate pattern marked by cooler-than-average seawater in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean.

It is one of the main drivers of weather in the United States, especially during the late fall, winter and early spring. It's the opposite to the more well-known El Niño, which occurs when Pacific Ocean water is warmer than average.

Signs of La Niña are starting to be seen in the Pacific: "We're starting to see hints of cooling at the surface in a small region of the eastern Pacific," said physical scientist Michelle L'Heureux with the Climate Prediction Center .

Additionally, "there is a historical tendency for La Niña to follow strong El Niño events," according to the announcement from the Climate Prediction Center.

More: Hurricane season forecast is already looking grim: Here's why hot oceans, La Niña matter

Can La Niña worsen the Atlantic hurricane season?

Yes, according to the Climate Prediction Center, La Niña can contribute to an increase in Atlantic hurricane activity by weakening the wind shear over the Caribbean Sea and tropical Atlantic Basin, which enables storms to develop and intensify.

Vertical wind shear refers to the change in wind speed and direction between roughly 5,000-35,000 feet above the ground, NOAA said. Strong vertical wind shear can rip a developing hurricane apart, or even prevent it from forming. This is what can happen in the Atlantic during an El Niño when Atlantic hurricane activity is often suppressed.

While La Niña tends to increase hurricanes in the Atlantic, it also tends to decrease their numbers in the eastern and central Pacific Ocean basins.

What does La Niña mean for weather in the US?

La Niña (along with El Niño and ENSO-neutral) typically have minimal impact on U.S. weather in the summer, other than their effect on hurricanes. Winter is the one season in which they have the most impact.

"When we're in ENSO-neutral, other climate drivers, like the Madden-Julian Oscillation , become more noticeable," National Weather Service meteorologist Erica Grow Cei told USA TODAY. Overall, she said forecasters at the Climate Prediction Center place odds on a milder- and drier-than-average spring across most of the country.

As for La Niña winter impacts, a typical La Niña winter in the U.S. brings cold and snow to the Northwest and unusually dry conditions to most of the nation's southern tier, according to  the Climate Prediction Center.  The Southeast and mid-Atlantic also tend to see warmer-than-average temperatures during a La Niña winter.

Meanwhile, New England and the Upper Midwest into New York tend to see colder-than-average temperatures, the Weather Channel said.

A carrack is typically an ocean-going ship with three or four sails.

la nina yacht

Premier Ship Models offer a selection of fantastic model ship replicas of La Niña. They’re all terrific recreations of the real-life counterpart, and serve as wonderful conversation pieces for enthusiasts of historical ships, expeditions and Christopher Columbus alike.

2024 expected to be La Niña year. What that means for hurricane season, Florida residents

All signs continue to point to the formation of La Niña this summer.

That's not good news for Florida residents and the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season , especially when combined with record warm water temperatures.

While La Niña is a natural occurrence that happens in the Pacific Ocean its formation has a huge impact — including its counterpart, El Niño — on weather in the U.S., and those impacts include affecting the formation of hurricanes and tropical storms in the Atlantic basin.

Here's what La Niña is and why Florida residents should care, especially when preparing for the upcoming hurricane season.

La Niña is coming: It could worsen hurricane season and affect US weather, forecasters say

What impact does La Niña have on the Atlantic hurricane season?

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30.

La Niña can bring more tropical cyclones in the Atlantic basin by weakening wind shear. The Atlantic basin includes the northern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.

When there is no or reduced wind shear, that allows tropical cyclones to develop and intensify.

Wind shear, when present, tears apart developing storms or can even prevent them from forming.

La Niña, El Niño strongest during the fall, busiest portion of hurricane season

Both La Niña and El Niño tend to reach peak intensity from fall through winter, according to AccuWeather.

The busiest portion of the Atlantic hurricane season occurs from August through October, with the peak being Sept. 10.

Warm water, La Niña are not good combination when it comes to tropical cyclones

In February, AccuWeather started "sounding alarm bells for a  supercharged season in 2024  with a risk for many storms," said Jon Porter, AccuWeather chief meteorologist.

The combination of a building La Niña and historically warm water will lay the groundwork for a blockbuster season, AccuWeather said.

Besides La Niña, adding to forecasters' concerns are the record high water temperatures, which help fuel tropical cyclones.

In early March, the  European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts  was predicting a "very busy" Atlantic hurricane season through September — two months short of the entire season — with about  17 named storms  and nine hurricanes, according to a tweet from Philip Klotzbach, meteorologist at Colorado State University specializing in Atlantic basin seasonal hurricane forecasts.

La Niña and its impact on prior hurricane seasons

Both 2005 and 2020 were La Niña years.

Hurricane Katrina, which struck the coasts of Mississippi and Louisiana, was one of 27 named storms that developed in 2005 , which broke the old record of 21 named storms set in 1993, according to the National Hurricane Center.

It's not the only record set in 2005:

14 hurricanes

8 major hurricanes of Category 3 or higher

7 storms made landfall in the U.S., just behind the record of 8 storms set in 1916 and 2004.

Most destructive in U.S. Damage estimates are more than $100 billion.

The 2005 hurricane season also was the first time the entire list of Atlantic hurricane names was used and forecasters dipped into Greek letters to name storms. Tropical Storm Zeta formed on Dec. 30.

The same thing happened in 2020, when there were 30 hurricanes, breaking the 2005 record . Of those 30 storms, 13 were hurricanes, six of which were major hurricanes.

Twelve named storms made landfall in the contiguous U.S., breaking a record held since 1916 of nine storms, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The strongest of the storms making landfall in the U.S. was  Hurricane Laura , which made landfall in Louisiana as a Category 4 storm. Laura was the third of five named storms to make landfall in Louisiana in 2020, the most on record for any state in one year.

What happened to Greek alphabet names for tropical storms and hurricanes?

In March 2021, the World Meteorological Organization announced  Greek names would no longer be used.

The use of Greek alphabet names "creates a distraction from the communication of hazard and storm warnings and is potentially confusing," the WMO said.

The decision was made after a  record-breaking season  in the Atlantic basin in 2020, which not only used the entire list for the year but also used  Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Epsilon, Zeta, Eta, Theta and Iota.

US Forecaster Sees Higher Chance of La Nina Conditions This Summer

(Reuters) - A U.S. government weather forecaster projects El Nino conditions will likely end by spring this year but saw a 62% chance that a weather pattern characterized by unusually cold temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, La Nina, will develop during June-August.

There is an 83% chance that a transition from El Nino to ENSO-neutral is likely to occur by April-June 2024, followed by a shift to La Nina, National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center (CPC) said in a monthly forecast on Thursday.

"Even though forecasts made through the spring season tend to be less reliable, there is a historical tendency for La Nina to follow strong El Nino events," the CPC said.

The ongoing El Nino weather pattern will continue to fuel above-average temperatures across the globe, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said last week.

El Nino peaked in December and would go down as one of the five strongest in history, it said.

Last year's El Nino, which followed three La Nina years, saw hot and dry weather in Asia and heavier rains in parts of the Americas that boosted farm output prospects in Argentina and the southern U.S. Plains.

India, the world's biggest rice supplier, restricted exports of the staple following a poor monsoon, while wheat output in No.2 exporter Australia took a hit. Palm oil plantations and rice farms in Southeast Asia received less than normal rains.

The high probability of a strong La Nina arriving this year has put grains farmers on alert in Argentina, where the climate phenomenon usually brings dry weather with lower rainfall.

"With the El Nino phenomenon expected to end this year, 2025 might not have such a rosy beginning, while it will likely also increase the rains which feed the Panama canal and potentially ease congestion," shipbroker Allied said in a note.

Meet ‘Lady Nina,’ a 115-Foot Carbon-Fiber Yacht That’s as Fast as It Is Stylish

Maiora has become somewhat of a front runner in the field of fast, fiberglass yachts. The Italian yard, which is an offshoot of Fipa Group , has delivered a spate of breakneck vessels since it was founded in the ’70s. its latest 115-footer, known as Lady Nina , features a high-speed planing hull and promises to cut your travel time in half.

The first in Maiora’s new Exuma series, the vessel features the yard’s signature carbon fiber construction with both interiors and exteriors designed in-house. She was built for a repeat client from the Americas and debuted at the Genoa Boat Show earlier this month. Naturally, her unique form garnered a lot of attention.

Lady Nina was named after an archipelago in the Bahamas and, fittingly, navigates shallow waters with ease. She’s unusually fast for her size thanks to her fast planing hull, which sees her ride on top of the water instead of pushing through it like a displacement yacht.

On top of that, AB Yachts —a pioneer of water jet propulsion that is also part of Fipa Group—made sure Lady Nina had plenty of (efficient) grunt. The vessel sports three 1,925 HP Caterpillar C32 Acert engines that are mated to two MJP steerable waterjets and a central booster jet. This allows Lady Nina to reach a top speed of 35 knots with next to no vibration and cover some 1,600 nautical miles. If you’re looking to get from Florida to the Bahamas in half the time, this is your gal.

To top it off, Lady Nina offers luxurious interiors fit for marine connoisseurs. The expansive main salon opens up onto an airy aft deck that spans roughly 645 square feet and is perfect for al fresco entertaining. She can sleep a total of 10 guests across a stately full-beam master suite, three guest cabins and a VIP suite that’s located on the lower deck. The real pièce de résistance, however, is the refrigerated tequila rack that is integrated into one of the side columns between the main salon and aft deck. Did somebody say salud?

  • La Niña watch is officially on: How will Louisiana weather be impacted in 2024?

(NEXSTAR) – El Niño hasn’t even grown cold, but national forecasters say its counterpart, La Niña, is already waiting in the wings to take over. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center issued a La Niña watch Thursday, predicting the U.S. will be in a La Niña pattern by the end of summer.

For the past nine months, we’ve been under a strong El Niño , which typically brings a cold, wet winter for southern states and warmer, dry weather up north. Though we are still technically in an El Niño situation, NOAA meteorologists foresee it ending sometime between now and June .

Current conditions favor a switch to La Niña between June and August, NOAA said. It will likely grow stronger from there; La Niña and El Niño both tend to reach peak strength during winter.

It’s winter when we’ll feel La Niña’s biggest impacts. A La Niña winter usually means dry, warmer-than-average conditions across the southern half of the country. The Pacific Northwest and Ohio Valley tend to get more precipitation, and northern states can see extra-cold weather.

In Louisiana, La Niña typically brings drier, warmer weather to the state.

“The higher the odds are for La Niña means that we are more likely to see those cooler waters over the Pacific and thus the patterns’ associated effects,” said Brandon Lashbrook, a meteorologist on BRProud’s StormTracker team.

Lashbrook said a La Niña pattern also impacts hurricane season over the Pacific and the Atlantic basins.

“This leads to more thunderstorms and less wind shear which are more favorable conditions for tropical cyclone formation. Typically, a La Niña summer leads to a more active hurricane season in the Atlantic Basin,” said Lashbrook.

Lashbrook said the StormTracker team keeps an eye on all disturbances in the Atlantic Basin before they become named storms.

“A system will be tracked even before it moves into the Gulf of Mexico. A tropical cyclone is reported as a hurricane when max sustained winds of 74 mph or greater are found within the storm and the National Hurricane Center upgrades the intensity in an official advisory,” said Lashbrook.

When we’re in La Niña, water along the Pacific coast is also colder and more nutrient-dense, according to the National Ocean Service . That’s also good news for marine life, like salmon and squid, that live along the West Coast.

Whether we’re in a La Niña year, El Niño year, or neither is determined by sea surface temperatures near the equator over the Pacific Ocean. The temperature of the water and air above it can shift the position of the jet stream, which impacts the types of weather we see on land.

The last time we saw La Niña conditions was just over a year ago, at the very start of 2023.
