J/92S: Clean Lines, Smooth Ride

  • By Michael Lovett
  • Updated: October 2, 2006

j92 sailboat interior

The beauty of J/Boats’ designs has always been their aesthetic simplicity and performance capability, and the new J/92S is no exception. While it shares the hull shape and interior layout of the J/92, the 92S has been optimized for racing with masthead spinnakers, a non-overlapping headsail, a deeper keel, and a bigger cockpit. I had the opportunity to experience these improvements firsthand during a recent afternoon sail with J/Boats president Jeff Johnstone. In a 15-knot breeze, the two of us had no trouble launching the asymmetrical reaching spinnaker, and the 92S quickly accelerated to an 8.5-knot pace. The boat felt stable but not sluggish, responding nimbly to changes in wind speed. The cockpit of the 92S is 33 inches longer than that of the 92, which opens up the workspace considerably. As with all J/Boats, the ergonomics of the 92S are superb: the footholds on the cockpit sole are perfectly placed for helmsman and crew; the mainsheet tackle and jib winches are within easy reach of the helm; seats raised slightly above deck level keep rear ends dry as the deck sheds water; the squared cabin top with logical handholds helps crewmembers make the steep traverse during heavy air tacks. The 92S is a carefully-designed 30-footer ideal for shorthanded sailing, racing, and weekend cruises. Compared to its 14-year-old predecessor, the 92S is faster off the wind and easier to handle, yet its comparable PHRF rating shouldn’t render the 92 obsolete just yet. www.jboats.com

A modern dual-purpose boat, the 92s is designed for fast sailing with a couple or family as crew. Yet the boat can be raced successfully, either one- design or under a rating rule. The 92s has a new keel and rudder design, and a new deck and cockpit layout for more comfort when cruising.

Down below, the interior is simple, efficient and will suit a couple or a family with small children. Forward there is a V- berth and an enclosed head. The cabin has settee berths on both sides and a compact galley on the port side. A cooler or a 12-volt portable refrigerator fits aft of the companionway.

Those who followed this year’s Newport Bermuda Race will have seen that 44 J/Boats finished the race and 12 finished in the top three of their classes. The 30-foot J/92s may not be your first choice for offshore passagemaking – it is intended as a racer/cruiser for active families – but you know it comes from a company that builds offshore-quality boats that sail extremely well.

A more dedicated coastal cruiser comes to the U.S. this fall from German builder Bavaria. One of Europe’s highest volume builders, Bavaria has mastered the science of production line assembly, which enables the company to build cruising boats at very attractive prices – despite the high euro, low dollar exchange rates.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

A updated version, the J/92S was introduced in 2005 with a newly designed cockpit, deck, keel, rudder, sail plan with non-overlapping headsails and masthead asymmetrical spinnaker.

The J/92 offers many rewarding features for the next adventure, weather it is a weekend getaway or a weeknight race series. This design was drawn with the family in mind and being able to sail to whatever caliber you want. The 5.5’ retractable carbon bow sprit, large cockpit and stable racing hull design are all spectacular designs about this 30’ racer/weekend cruiser. Smile N Wave was equipped with a new Yanmar engine in 2008 with extremely low hours, newer race sails in great condition and updated electronics.

Below decks, Smile N Wave does not disappoint, with her exceptional camper cruiser attributes and a large open interior. The most notable features for Smile N Wave are her forward manual head with a privacy screen and built in Espar heating system. The cabin is surprisingly roomy for a thirty-foot boat and proves that J-boat has once again, designed a well-rounded boat ready for adventure.

Interior Accommodations

Below decks on the J/92, there is a surprising amount of cabin space. The raised cabin top gives just enough headroom to provide a practical cabin and lets in additional light through the portlights. The main cabin has port and starboard settees comfortable enough to sleep on. On the port side there is a sink with a cutting board for basic food prep or a small camp stove. The single basin sink has water pressure by means of a manual foot-pump style water pump.

Forward, there is a hanging space on the starboard side for lines and gear and the head is opposite on the port side. There is a manual marine toilet and space for a sink in the countertop if you choose to add one. The V berth provides a large sleeping space for two people great for a weekend getaway or afternoon nap. The forward deck hatch lets in ample amounts of light and provides good ventilation when open.

Owners comments:

For sale J/92, in excellent condition. This J/92 is a special one with many extras. The boat is suitable for serious competitive sailing or for touring. We have always made sure that the boat is in top condition. What needed to be replaced has been replaced. The boat had a refit in 2014. Everything has been off deck and balsa core has been partly replaced by a shipyard. Non-slip has been reapplied and all deck feeding are made full glass. Yearly new antifouling, last layer 2020. Wonderfully fast sailing yacht from the famous J/Boats shipyard. If you want to sail fast with an oblique eye on the log, then the J/92 is an excellent choice. Without detracting from the sheer ease of use, comfort or safety, the J/92 combines it all. The interior is light and comfortable for sailing during the weekend, or also longer stay on board.

VESSEL REVIEW | Sinichka – Electric commuter boats designed for Russia’s Moskva River

j92 sailboat interior

A series of three new electric monohull commuter ferries have already begun operational sailings on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.

Built by Russian shipyard Emperium, sister vessels Sinichka , Filka , and Presnya – all named after rivers in Moscow – are being operated by the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans). They are the first units of a planned fleet of 20 vessels that will serve the capital city and other nearby communities. The new ferry system will be the water transport system to be operated on the Moskva River in 16 years.

Each vessel has a welded aluminium hull, an LOA of 21 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a draught of only 1.4 metres, a displacement of 40 tonnes, and capacity for 80 passengers plus two crewmembers. Seating is available for 42 passengers on each ferry, and the main cabins are also fitted with USB charging ports, wifi connectivity, tables, toilets, and space for bicycles and scooters. The cabin layout can be rearranged to allow the operator to adjust the distances between the seats and to install armrests of varying widths.

j92 sailboat interior

An open upper deck is also accessible to passengers and is the only area on each ferry where smoking is allowed.

The ferries are all of modular construction with each ferry’s wheelhouse, main cabin, and other structural elements being built as complete, separate components. This enables the ferries to be easily dismantled for transport to anywhere in Russia by rail and then quickly re-assembled within seven days.

The ferries are also ice-capable. Recently completed operational trials on the Moskva showed that the vessels can also easily navigate under mild winter conditions with broken surface ice, though year-round operations are planned for the entire fleet.

The ferries are each fitted with 500kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that supply power to two 134kW motors. This configuration can deliver a maximum speed of 11.8 knots, a cruising speed of just under 10 knots, and a range of 150 kilometres.

Emperium said the transfer of rotation of electric motors to the propeller is carried out by direct drive. As a propulsion installation, a pulling rotary propeller-steering column with double screws is used. The installation of double pulling screws, with similar power, allows an operator to increase the efficiency of the propulsion system to deliver a slightly higher speed or to reduce energy consumption. This arrangement also provides the ferries with enhanced manoeuvrability necessary for navigating in close quarters.

The batteries themselves have projected service lives of 10 to 12 years and are fitted with safety features such as built-in fire extinguishers and gas vents. Quick-disconnect features allow the batteries to be easily removed for replacement or maintenance.

Some of our readers have expressed disquiet at our publication of reviews and articles describing new vessels from Russia. We at Baird Maritime can understand and sympathise with those views. However, despite the behaviour of the country’s leaders, we believe that the maritime world needs to learn of the latest developments in vessel design and construction there.

COMMENTS

  1. Performance

The J/92 has an attractive and modern interior with a sense of space and comfort unusual for a 30 foot sailboat with such spectacular sailing qualities.
