Based on Lagoon’s Seventy 7 model, the newcomer was built in Bordeaux, France. The cat features six generous staterooms for up to 12 guests and cabins for four crew. Ponant says seafarers can expect personalized service, including a private chef, tailored activities, and other high-end touches.

 “The concept and design of this Lagoon Seventy 7 yacht has been praised by everyone in the industry, won over by the spacious interior and exterior areas,” Guillaume Le Brec, the experienced skipper in charge of this project at Ponant, said in a statement. “Guests will really appreciate the high-end finishings as much as her exceptional sailing qualities.” 

Furthermore, the itineraries are completely customizable, too. The inaugural seven-night roundtrip voyages from Bonifacio can be tweaked to the traveler’s interests, with the captain offering recommendations. After a stint in Corsica, Spirit of Ponant will cruise around Mahé, a.k.a. the largest island in the Seychelles archipelago, for the winter season.

ORC Sailor Services

The Sailor Services (SaS) system is offered by the Offshore Racing Congress as a self-service online tool for boat owners, skippers, and other interested parties such as measurers, race organizers and sail makers to explore and exploit the boat information in the ORC database. ORC Sailor Services allows you access to the ORC Database of all ORC certificates issued worldwide , with the following options:

Search the database in several ways: name of the boat, sail number, class or design type, and narrow the search with the country and year where and when the certificate was issued.

Using this search method, you may get a copy of any certificate issued by an ORC rating office - this may be any boat of interest: a competitor’s boat, a boat you are considering to buy, or a boat you have heard about but want to know more. Or this could even be your own boat when you are looking for an old or current certificate. 

When you have found a boat of interest, you can:

• download a copy
• if the certificate is valid, tick the box to add it to build an online Scratch Sheet
• add it to a virtual folder established for your SaS account called My Boats for you to open and use later

With boats saved in your My Boats folder, you can do several things:

• generate a test certificate from any certificate, old or new, by using existing measurement data from the certificate
• or change selected measurements listed on the certificate to test the changes in rating by using an editing tool with a boat record. For example, you can find out the rating effects of having larger or smaller sails, changing your crew weight, or changing to an asymmetric from a symmetric spinnaker. Please note that measurements from the boat’s offset file (hull, keel and rudder) may not be changed within Sailor Services. For these changes, consult your local Rating Office or a qualified naval architect.

Since ORC Sailor Services always uses the latest version of the ORC VPP from the moment it is available, you can use this tool to see how ratings will change at the beginning of the year even before certificates are issued by rating offices.

Other products available in Sailor Services:

• Get a Speed Guide , a complete set of polar diagrams showing a boat's performance at different wind speeds and wind angles, and available in digital formats for routing software.
• Get a Target Speeds , a customized prediction of performance targets for that boat on one of the most common types of courses used in competitive offshore sailing.

Donald Trump Plans to Build New US Military 'Yachts'

D onald Trump is vowing to build up the U.S. naval fleet capacity to contest China's growth in the sector, detailing beautiful "yachts with weapons"—and an expert told Newsweek how that may play out.

In its 2023 China Military Power Report, the Pentagon said the People's Liberation Army Navy had about 370 warships . U.S. officials, who in 2021 correlated the Chinese naval growth to the addition of more major surface combatants, estimate the fleet will expand to 395 ships by 2025 and 435 ships by 2030.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and other officials gathered at the 20th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party in October 2022 focused on intensifying and accelerating the People's Liberation Army's modernization goals, including deploying PLA forces on a "regular basis and in diversified ways," according to the Pentagon.

Conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt on Thursday asked Trump whether he would increase U.S. shipbuilding to compete with adversaries like China.

"Yeah, we were going to, we were on track to do that," Trump said. "We had unbelievable talent, unbelievable ships getting ready to be made. And then this guy [President Joe Biden ] came in, and he canceled it.

"First of all, it's jobs, okay? It's very important because it's jobs, great jobs. But you know, I rebuilt the entire military, and the one thing was, the ships are, you know, they take longer to do. We were set to do something great. We started the process. We gave, as you know, the destroyers, we gave Wisconsin a tremendous yard in Wisconsin."

In April 2020, part of the last year of Trump's first term, the Italian company Fincantieri's shipyard in Wisconsin announced it would begin constructing its first Constellation-class frigate, according to Defense News.

In May 2023, the company announced that the Department of Defense awarded its $526 million contract to build a fourth Constellation-class frigate for the U.S. Navy to include the frigate and nine option ships, with a cumulative value of $5.5 billion that includes post-delivery availability support and crew training.

Construction on the first frigate, the future USS Constellation, began in late August 2022 in Marinette, Wisconsin, and is scheduled to be delivered in 2026.

"[The frigates] look, I mean, they were beautiful," Trump said. "They look like, yeah, because I'm into beauty, to be honest with you. They look like yachts with lots of weapons on them, lots of weapons.

"But, and they've really come out good. But we were giving out a lot of ships, and then this guy came in, and he has no idea what he's doing. No idea whatsoever. China is on a shipbuilding message like nobody's seen before."

Rajan Menon, a nonresident scholar in the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace's Russia and Eurasia Program and director of the Grand Strategy Program at Defense Priorities, told Newsweek via email that Trump's vision of naval ships like frigates goes beyond aesthetics.

"Frigates may be 'beautiful' in Trump's eyes, but they are far more expensive to build than yachts—to which he likens them," Menon said. "More importantly, warships, as most recently demonstrated by Ukraine's repeated, successful attacks on Russia's Black Sea Fleet , provide big targets for the most advanced anti-ship missiles."

Menon said that the naval disparity between the U.S. and China can be tied to two separate questions, one of which is whether China in any foreseeable future can displace the worldwide maritime supremacy the U.S. has. He said the answer is "no."

But China's reliance on a variety of sophisticated weapons that substantially increase the cost "in blood and treasure" is already costing the U.S. and its warships in the seas off the eastern shore, he added.

"Moreover, its capabilities in this respect are almost certain to increase, in quantity and quality," he said.

“The class of champions”

In the past one hundred years, the Star has established itself at the forefront of the international sailing community. The first one-design class and core Olympic racing yacht since 1932, the Star attracts sailors of varying ages and skill levels from all over the world. With nearly 2,000 boats competing annually and over 170 active fleets world-wide, the development of the class is not likely to slow down in the foreseeable future.

Designed in 1911 by naval architect Francis Sweisguth, the Star was born to replace the 17-foot “Bug,” which was one of the most popular keelboats at the time. By May 1911, the first Star class regatta was held on Long Island Sound and featured five of Sweisguth’s new boats. By 1922, the Stars already numbered in the hundreds, thus leading to the foundation of the International Star Class Yacht Racing Association (ISCYRA).

Just under twenty-three feet in length, the hull is long and narrow and features an integrated bulb keel positioned just aft of the mast. In adherence to strict class rules, the Star weighs 1,479 pounds and is typically constructed of fiberglass. Older wooden hulls can still be found from time to time, but rarely in competition. The hull has gentle, sweeping chines leading toward the water line that not only provide a speed advantage, but attribute to the yacht’s aesthetically pleasing appearance.

During the yacht’s one hundred year history, new features have been incorporated into the design in an effort to maintain the class’ position as the pinnacle of the international racing community. The class association began asserting a control over new refinements, not to stifle progress, but to maintain a level of competition based more on the skill of the sailor than the technological advancements of the yacht. Some of the features include:

• Adjustable jib leads
• Crew hiking vest
• Suction bailers
• Unique, circular boom vang
• Whisker pole
• Strict class association sail measurements

One of the interesting features of the Star is the hiking vest. The vest is worn by the crew and allows him or her to adopt a unique hiking position by “drooping” their body over the side of the hull. In addition to the vest, the Star also features a circular vang system. Designed for the star, but eventually adopted other classes, the circular vang system provides a safe means to deal with the enormous loads of the yacht’s large sail plan.

Numerous champions of the sailing world spent time sailing the Star and hold prestigious international titles. A Star Class World Championship is often considered on the most coveting trophies in all of sailing. Despite the high level of competition at top tier events, the Star also offers opportunities to local and amateur sailors. The depth of skill level and opportunity is unrivaled by any other racing class. Sailors looking to compete at the local level can often gain experience with the boat and progress up through the levels of competition, not to mention enjoy the thrill of sailing such an incredible boat.

Get involved with the Star Class! If you want to begin racing there are plenty of Stars out there looking for a good home. Thanks to the regulation in design features, many older Stars perform just as well as their newer counterparts and run at affordable prices. If you are a former college sailor or young professional looking to stay active at the highest level of competition or looking for a fast boat to sail at the local level perhaps a Star should be your next boat…

Sadly, in 2011, it was decided that the keelboats would be removed as an Olympic class following the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Recently rumors began to circulate of comeback for the 2016 Games; however these were quashed almost immediately by the ISCYRA. Despite being struck from the Olympic books the Star class has showed no signs of losing momentum. Huge turnouts for Barcardi Race Week and the 2012 Star Winter Series appear to have breathed new life into the yacht. With hundreds of local regattas scheduled this year and dozens at the internationals and championship level, the Star class remains strong

U.S. Postal Service Recommends New Prices for July 2024

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, the U. S. Postal Service filed notice with the Postal Regulatory Commission of mailing services price changes to take effect July 14, 2024. The new rates include a 5-cent increase in the price of a First-Class Mail Forever stamp from 68 cents to 73 cents.

The proposed adjustments, approved by the governors of the Postal Service, would raise mailing services product prices approximately 7.8 percent. If favorably reviewed by the commission, the price changes would include:

The additional-ounce price for single-piece letters increases from 24 cents to 28 cents. The Postal Service is also seeking price adjustments for Special Services products, including Certified Mail and money order fees. Notably, there will be no price increase for Post Office Box rental fees, and the Postal Service will apply a price reduction of 10 percent for postal insurance when mailing an item.

As changes in the mailing and shipping marketplace continue, these price adjustments are needed to achieve the financial stability sought by the organization’s Delivering for America 10-year plan. USPS prices remain among the most affordable in the world.

The commission will review the changes before they are scheduled to take effect. The complete Postal Service price filing, with prices for all products, can be found on the commission’s website under the Daily Listings section . The Mailing Services filing is Docket No. R2024-2. The price tables are also available on the Postal Service’s Postal Explorer website at  pe.usps.com/PriceChange/Index .

Full line code completion with local AI

You can now utilize per-line autocompletion for PHP code, as well as JavaScript, TypeScript, and HTML, even when you don’t have access to the internet. With full line code completion, the local LLM processes and analyzes data directly on your device, resulting in ultra-fast offline code completion with minimal latency. 

With this approach, not only will your generated code never contain non-existent variables or methods, it will also remain compliant with your data privacy policies, as it doesn’t require a connection to external servers. This feature is included in your paid PhpStorm subscription plan, so no additional license is necessary.

Did you know that you can use  JetBrains AI Assistant  to autocomplete entire blocks of code? In addition to expansive code completion capabilities, it provides AI chat, AI-generated documentation, error explanations directly in the console, and more.

Support for Symfony’s AssetMapper

You can now quickly install missing modules and packages via importmap.php and utilize full autocompletion for their classes and methods.

New terminal (Beta)

The new terminal is now available in the new UI . You can switch between the old and new terminal in Settings | Tools | Terminal | Enable New Terminal . 

Currently, it only supports Bash, Zsh, and PowerShell, with other shells still under development.

Sticky lines in the editor

This feature keeps key structural elements, like the beginnings of classes or methods, pinned to the top of the editor as you scroll. This way, scopes always remain in view, and you can promptly navigate through the code by clicking on a pinned line. 

Pest improvements

We’ve improved navigation between tests and methods in the Go to action menu, and through duplicate tests and custom expectations when using quick-fixes. Additionally, we’ve also fixed the navigation issues that used to occur when opening the test’s source code from the Run tool window.

Also new is the ability to generate Pest tests for PHP classes and methods and create new Pest tests from the Intention actions menu.

We’ve also added a new inspection to simplify calls to some Pest assert methods.

PHPUnit 11.0 support

PhpStorm now supports running tests with PHPUnit 11. If the IDE detects deprecated attributes in the configuration file, it will now display corresponding notifications to users and provide a quick-fix, automatically migrating the configuration file to the new version.

Furthermore, a new inspection and quick-fix have been added for deprecated TestCase methods when creating return stub configuration objects.

Additionally, we’ve made changes to the Deprecated usage of data provider s inspection so that it will now issue a warning when PHPUnit 11 is used, and we’ve also removed the –cache-result-file option when starting tests.

Improvements to dd , var_dump , and symfony/var-dumper

You can now open class and file links directly in the editor and fold/unfold structures in the console output.

Checks for vulnerable PHP packages in composer.json

PhpStorm now cross-checks your project’s PHP packages against the Checkmarx database and highlights vulnerable ones with an inspection in the composer.json file.

Rsync: support in WSL

You can now utilize the WSL distribution path for the rsync tool, which will be employed during deployment.

Frontend updates

Component usages for vue, svelte, and astro.

PhpStorm now offers in-editor hints for component usages in Vue, Svelte, and Astro files. This will help you quickly locate all usages of a specific component anywhere in the project.

Language Services widget

You’ll find the new Language Services widget on the status bar, providing insights into the active language services for the current file and project. You can restart services or navigate to their settings directly from this widget.

Other improvements

Option to scale down the entire ide.

You can now scale the IDE down to 90%, 80%, or 70%, giving you the flexibility to adjust the size of IDE elements both upward and downward.

Better support for the class-string type

PhpStorm now offers a static method completion for entities with the class-string type.

In-editor code review

PhpStorm 2024.1 introduces an enhanced code review experience for both GitHub and GitLab users with the implementation of a new review mode. Integrated within the editor, this feature facilitates direct interaction between authors and reviewers. Upon checking the pull/merge request branch, review mode activates automatically and pink markers appear in the gutter, indicating that code changes are available for review. Clicking on these markers reveals a popup displaying the original code so you can quickly identify what has been changed. Gutter icons help you swiftly initiate new discussions, as well as view and hide existing ones. They also provide easy access to comments, making it easy to review, reply, and react to them. 

Local filtering in the data editor

This release introduces the long-awaited local filtering feature in the data editor. You can now swiftly filter rows by column values without sending queries to the database. This local approach only impacts the current page, though you can adjust the page size or fetch all the data if you need to extend the scope. To disable all local filters, deselect the designated Enable Local Filter icon.
