Aditya - India’s First Solar Ferry
Navalt built Aditya, India’s pioneering solar ferry, for the Kerala State Water Transport Department. This ferry represents the world's and India's inaugural commercially viable mode of transport, driven solely by solar energy.
Recipient of the 2020 Gustave Trouve Award for the World’s Best Electric Ferry, Aditya redefined India’s inland water transportation.
Celebrating five years of unparalleled success, Aditya continues to stand out for its enduring fame and accomplishments. Remarkably, this vessel achieved breakeven in 2019 and is currently accruing profits.
ADITYA, 7 Years Of Success
The Kerala State Water Transport Department (SWTD) operated approximately 100 ferry boats of varying sizes, accommodating 75 to 100 passengers across the state. These boats, constructed from wood or steel, were all single-hulled and propelled by diesel engines. By 2013, a significant challenge loomed.
While air and water pollution posed substantial environmental concerns, they weren't the primary issue. Rather, the diesel engines' noise, vibration, and subsequent fatigue on passengers and crew, as well as the smell of fuel, although notable, weren't the foremost problem. The crux of the issue was the exorbitant operating costs that rendered the boats financially unsustainable.
A typical ferry on the Vaikom-Thayvanakkadavu route, covering 2.8 km with a modest fare of 4 per journey, yielded daily revenue of approximately 5,000. Astonishingly, the energy cost for 100 liters of diesel surpassed this revenue, totaling around $6,041. Considering direct energy expenses and maintenance at $6,645 daily, along with crew costs and overheads of roughly $3,000, the total operational expenditure (OPEX) amounted to $9,645 each day.
Consequently, the department incurred a substantial loss of about $4,645 daily, considering solely the OPEX. Seeking a solution to this predicament, SWTD explored harnessing solar energy.
Aditya, India's largest solar boat and the pioneering solar ferry, was inaugurated on January 12th, 2017. The inauguration took place in the presence of Shri Pinarayi Vijayan, Chief Minister of Kerala, Shri Piyush Goyal, Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Kerala State Transport Minister Shri A.K. Saseendran, along with members of parliament and the state assembly.
Notably, Aditya became the world's first solar ferry to fulfill over 80% of its energy needs through solar power. With a seating capacity for 75 passengers, it can cruise for over 6 hours on a sunny day without requiring an external charge. Commissioned for the Kerala State Water Transportation Department, the ferry adheres to the highest safety standards under the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) classification, ensuring reliability.
The Navalt team initiated the design and construction of a solar ferry in 2014, employing advanced materials and enhanced design methodologies. Utilizing lighter materials like GRP and aluminium drastically reduced its weight. Innovative design techniques such as computational fluid dynamics slashed the vessel's drag to a mere 1/3 of the typical ferry size. Furthermore, the inclusion of a robust propulsion motor and marine-grade lithium-based battery storage, meeting stringent international safety standards, bolstered efficiency and longevity.

ADITYA is a catamaran ferry boat with a GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic, also known as FRP, or Fiber Reinforced Plastic) hull and an aluminium superstructure built under IR Class (Indian Register of Shipping, a member of the International Association of Classification Societies). http://www.irclass.org).
For a public transport service like SWTD, where profitability is not important, the operating costs should be covered by revenue from passenger tickets. In this case, we’re looking at a cost comparison of multiple options, as well as the total cost of ownership for both options.
This is the initial cost of owning the boat. The cost of ADITYA was 1.95 crore (at the 2013 tender price). Years later, such a boat would be worth 3.5 CR. A diesel ferry with a similar capacity (75 passengers) built under the IR class (or any other IACS (International Association of Classification Societies) member class) would cost around 1.5 million dollars.
In the total cost of operating the boat, there are three broad cost groups:
- Maintenance
- Crew and overheads
On average, a vessel operates for 350 days a year.
- Energy cost
A typical ferry boat crossing the backwater in the Vaikom-Thavanakkadavu sector, a distance of 2.8 kilometers, charges only 4 rupees for the journey on one side. Each trip takes about 13–15 minutes (at a speed of 10–12 km/hr). If it operates from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., taking 22 trips and having sufficient time for passenger embarkation and crew breaks, it would need about 100 litres of diesel (at 10 litres per hour). It is the cost of fuel for running the boat and its systems, i.e., running both main and auxiliary engines.
For a solar ferry without any fuel onboard, the energy cost is the cost of the grid used to charge the batteries. The total energy consumption is 7,969 units, and the energy cost is $62,235. This energy cost is expected to increase by 5% every year with the increase in grid costs. The primary cost of a diesel ferry is energy. The daily fuel consumption is 100 liters, and for a diesel price of 60.41, the daily energy cost is 6,041 (at 60.41 per liter, the average price in Kerala for 2017). This was 21,02,429 for the first year. The diesel price is also expected to increase by 5% every year.
- Maintenance cost
These are the total costs to keep the boat running. There are three kinds of maintenance activities. The first type is exclusively for diesel engines. This includes the replacement of consumables.
like lube oil and filters, as well as engine overhaul charges, both of which are regularly done every 45 days for diesel ferries. For solar ferries without any engines, this is not there. Net of fuel costs, the average maintenance cost is about 3% for lube oil and 7% for filters and engine overhauls. The total is about $604 per day. In the first year, this was 2,10,243. The second type is the cost of replacing the battery cells. The propulsion battery has a warranty of five years. However, based on the battery discharge level, the replacement cycle for the battery would be seven years. It is important to note that the battery’s storage capacity is expected to be 80% of the new one at this time, not that it becomes unusable. At the current price, the replacement cost of the cells is expected to be 25 lakhs. This would be lower considering the annual reduction in the price of lithium cells due to the increased adoption of electric vehicles. The third type is the cost of replacing or repairing damaged parts or equipment and the cost of maintaining the boat in good condition. It is assumed that this is similar in both boats and is therefore not considered.
These are the costs of maintaining the crew as well as the overheads of the head office for boat operation. For these kinds of boats, three crew members are needed to operate them. Since these are similar in both kinds of boats, this is not considered for comparison.
Most passenger ferries are designed to last twenty years. It is not prudent to design ferry systems for a longer period since, by then, a far better technology would have come to enable replacement. At the end of its life, there is a recycling cost, but the residual value of materials and equipment in the boat may be higher than this, and hence there might be a net positive value of the boat. The batteries are recycled by the manufacturer as per EU guidelines. At the end of its life, the recycling cost of the boat is insignificant.
To factor in the time value of money, the difference in the initial cost between the boats is financed, and the EMI for the same is taken as the finance cost for the solar ferry. The interest rate is assumed to be at 12%, although the Kerala government has lower costs. The cost difference of 45 lakh (Sec 5.2) needs to be financed. After iteration, we can see that in 36 months (3 years), with an EMI of 1.49 lakhs and an annual cost of 17.94 lakhs, this difference in cost can be repaid. The total cost of financing for the 45 lakhs is 53.81 lakhs. After this period, there are huge savings every year.
TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIP
TCO Summarizing the calculation, we can see that in its life cycle of twenty years, the TCO comparison is:
Solar Ferry – 274.4 lakhs Diesel Ferry – 914.7 lakhs
The cost of diesel ferry is three times more than the solar ferry. Read the complete paper published at IEEE here .

PM Modi launches hydrogen-powered ferry: features, significance
Built by the cochin shipyard limited, the ferry will be deployed for service in varanasi. here's why india developing the environment-friendly vessel is significant..
Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday virtually launched India’s first indigenously developed hydrogen fuel cell ferry. The vessel, manufactured by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), will be deployed for service at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.
Built at a cost of Rs 18 crore, the ferry will be handed over to the Inland Waterways Authority of India by the CSL after rigorous trials. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways met 75 per cent of the project cost.
What are the special features of the vessel?
The Hydrogen fuel cell vessel is a 24-meter-long catamaran, which can carry 50 people in its air-conditioned passenger area. The accommodation area has been constructed with high-quality fiberglass reinforced plastic, similar to metro train coaches.
Hydrogen fuel cell vessels do not use conventional batteries as the primary storage house of electrical energy. The vessels run on hydrogen fuel, which is stored in cylinders. This boat has five hydrogen cylinders that can carry 40kg of hydrogen and support eight hours of operations. The vessel is also fitted with a 3-kW solar panel.
The hydrogen fuel cell-powered vessel has zero emission, zero noise and is energy-efficient, which makes it more environment-friendly. Since there are no moving parts, the ferry requires less maintenance than combustion vessels.
How do hydrogen fuel cells work?
A hydrogen fuel cell generates electricity by utilising the chemical energy contained in hydrogen . It releases only pure water, not discharging pollutants. Hydrogen is loaded into cells. The energy within the hydrogen is converted into electricity and heat, which is then used to power the vessel’s propulsion mechanism. In the fuel cell, the hydrogen reacts with the oxygen in the air to produce electricity. Unlike batteries, hydrogen fuel cells do not require recharging. Provided uninterrupted supply of fuel and oxygen, these cells would work continuously.
What type of cells have been used in the vessel?
This vessel uses a 50-kW PEM (proton-exchange membrane) fuel cell, with Lithium-Ion Phosphate batteries. The advantage is that the cells can quickly change their output depending upon the power demand. PEM fuel cells are popular in automotive applications because they operate at a lower temperature, and are lighter and more compact.
How was it developed?
India has now indigenously developed hydrogen fuel cells and their related systems.

The vessel has been built completely by the CSL, which also developed the vessel automation system and power management system. The hydrogen fuel cell system was developed by KPIT Technologies, Pune , in collaboration with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research Labs, under the Union Ministry of Science and Technology.
While hydrogen fuel cell technology has been under development for maritime applications, only a few countries globally have done demonstration projects. This ferry, thus, has given India an early mover advantage to tap the potential of hydrogen as an emerging green fuel in the marine sector.
The ‘Harit Nauka’(green boat) initiative of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways envisages a green transition of inland vessels. In line with this, the ferry can be replicated in other parts of the country for urban mobility. It is also a boost to the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
What is the Harit Nauka initiative?
In January 2024, the shipping ministry unveiled the Harit Nauka guidelines for inland vessels. As per the guidelines, all states have to make efforts to use green fuels for 50 per cent of inland waterways-based passenger fleets in the next one decade, and 100 per cent by 2045. This is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as per the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
Globally, the shipping industry is increasingly transitioning to green fuels due to environmental regulations, sustainability goals, and advancements in green fuel technologies. Hydrogen and its derivatives are gaining attention for promising zero-emission fuels for the industry.

PM Modi launches India’s first hydrogen-powered ferry built at Cochin Shipyard
Kochi: India’s first indigenously developed and built hydrogen fuel cell ferry was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The prime minister joined the ceremony in virtual mode from Thoothukudi. The inland waterway vessel, under the Harit Nauka initiative, is a pilot project to demonstrate the technology for the maritime sector.
The ferry built at the Cochin Shipyard here will be taken to Varanasi. The boat will be shifted to Varanasi after several rounds of detailed operational test rides here. The pilot project is a 24-metre-long catamaran vessel which can carry 50 passengers with fully air-conditioned passenger space.
Madhu S Nair, chairman and MD of Cochin Shipyard, hailed the development of the green fuel vessel as “a sign of the new India”. "There were many sceptics who said it would take long for India to develop hydrogen fuel cells. It is a clear answer to those who believe we will have to import it from the west. It’s a very high-grade hydrogen fuel cell that has been developed. Hydrogen of 99.99 per cent purity has to be used in this. Today hydrogen is not fully viable. But with the way the central government is pushing it, in the next few years hydrogen will become a viable alternative fuel,” Nair told the media after the event.

Hydrogen fuel cell vessels are electric vessels which do not use conventional batteries as primary storage of electrical energy. The vessels run on hydrogen fuel which is stored in onhold cylinders. The fuel cells convert the hydrogen into electricity which is then used to drive the vessel.
The Cochin Shipyard rolled out the project in association with the Indian Register of Shipping. Pune-based KPIT Technologies developed the hydrogen fuel cell system in collaboration with CISR Labs. The project costs Rs 14 crore, and 75 per cent of it has been funded by the Ministry of Port, Shipping and Waterways.
The launch of the project is expected to give an impetus to the country’s push for using hydrogen in marine applications as envisaged under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
The adoption of green hydrogen as a maritime fuel is at the forefront of India’s commitment to a sustainable future that aims for net zero emissions by 2070. The fuel cell-powered vessel has zero emission and zero noise, and is energy efficient, reducing the effect of global warming.
PM Modi launched the vessel at a function chaired by Madhu S Nair. Hibi Eden MP, Sreejith Narayanan, director - operations, Jose V J, director-finance and Bijoy Bhaskar, director - finance attended the event.

India's government-run shipbuilder, Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has begun fabrication of its pilot Hydrogen Fuel Cell vessel.
This is purportedly India’s first fully indigenous zero-emission fuel cell vessel project.
CSL is partnering with an Indian software integration company, KPTI Technologies and Indian Registry of Shipping (IRS) to carry out the project.
Furthermore, CSL revealed that the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is partially funding the project.
“This vessel is expected to propel India to a strong position on the global front as among the first movers in this niche and emerging technology,” the company said in a release. The fabrication of the new vessel was kicked-off by Madhu S Nair, CMD, CSL.
A catamaran is a watercraft featuring two parallel hulls of equal size. Catamarans typically have less hull volume, smaller displacement and shallower draft than monohulls of comparable length.
Earlier in November 2022, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was inked between the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and CSL to build the country’s first hydrogen fuel cell catamaran vessel for operation in Varanasi.
The Hydrogen Fuel Cell catamaran, named I-CAT 24 06 H2 is a zero-emission water taxi designed for short-distance commutes in riverine waters.
It is a spacious air-conditioned ferry, with a carrying capacity of 100 passengers and large windows for a panoramic view of the surroundings.
The vessel will be deployed at Varanasi after test and trial runs in Kochi. It would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 250 tonnes annually.
Based on the success of the project, the technology can be adopted for greening of cargo vessels and small country crafts, enabling significant reduction in pollution levels in the national waterways, said a release from CSL.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Authorities in the eastern Caribbean said they were trying to locate two people believed to be U.S. citizens who were aboard a yacht that was hijacked by three escaped prisoners from Grenada.
The Royal Grenada Police Force said in a statement released Friday that they were working on leads “that suggest” the two occupants of the yacht might have been killed.
“This investigation is in its infancy stage,” police said.
The nonprofit Salty Dawg Sailing Association identified the owners as Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel. It said they were “veteran cruisers” and longtime members of the association, calling them “warmhearted and capable.” A relative of Hendry didn’t return a message seeking comment Saturday.
The association said a cruising skipper had contacted the association about a member’s yacht, Simplicity, that was found “anchored and abandoned” off a beach on the island of St. Vincent.
“The good Samaritan had boarded the boat and noted that the owners … were not onboard and found evidence of apparent violence,” the association said in a statement Thursday.
The association said Hendry and Brandel had sailed the yacht in last year’s Caribbean Rally from Hampton, Virginia, to Antigua, and were spending the winter cruising in the eastern Caribbean.
“This is a very upsetting event and details are still unconfirmed by the authorities, but this does appear to be a tragic event,” said Bob Osborn, the association’s president. “In all my years of cruising the Caribbean, I have never heard of anything like this.”
Family members of those missing met with authorities in St. Vincent on Saturday, where they were seen boarding the yacht that was hijacked. It was being guarded by officials, one of whom was wearing latex gloves.
Hendry’s family issued a statement Saturday thanking police, local coast guards and all those who helped authorities gather information.
“It means so much to us that so many people cared for Ralph and Kathy as friends and fellow cruisers that they are willing to stop and help in whatever way possible,” the family said.
They also asked that all those trying to conduct independent searches to “stand down.”
“The only way we feel this situation could be worse would be if anyone was hurt or endangered trying to conduct searches,” the family said.
Authorities in Grenada said they had dispatched senior investigators and a forensic specialist to the nearby island of St. Vincent, where the escaped prisoners were arrested Wednesday.
The prisoners, ages 19, 25 and 30, were charged a couple of months ago with one count of robbery with violence. The eldest inmate also was charged with one count of rape, three counts of attempted rape and two counts of indecent assault and causing harm, police in Grenada said.
The three men escaped from their holding cell Feb. 18, according to police.
Authorities said a preliminary investigation suggested the three men seized the yacht at Grenada’s capital, St. George’s, and traveled to St. Vincent.

Short Answer
Catamarans are thought to have originated in the South Pacific region, likely in the islands of Polynesia.
The earliest catamarans are believed to have been constructed by the Austronesians around 1500 to 1000 BC.
These vessels were then spread to other cultures by trading and other means of communication.
Today, catamarans are used in various ways around the world, including for commercial and recreational purposes.
The Origins of Catamaran
Catamarans have a long and rich history that dates back to the Indian subcontinent.
The word catamaran is derived from the Tamil language of South India and literally means tied wood, referring to how two logs were tied together to form the original catamaran design.
This sturdy craft was originally used for transportation and fishing, but it eventually made its way to the West in the late 18th century as a recreational sailing vessel.
Today, catamarans are used for a variety of purposes, ranging from racing and cruising to fishing.
They are renowned for their stability, maneuverability, and speed, and they are popular with both recreational and professional sailors alike.
Catamarans are especially adept at handling choppy waters, as their design allows them to handle waves better than most other vessels.
This makes them an ideal choice for sailing in rough or windy conditions.
Catamarans are also praised for their spacious layout, with their two hulls providing more room than other types of vessels.
This makes them ideal for larger groups, as they can comfortably accommodate more people than a traditional sailboat.
Additionally, catamarans are renowned for their efficiency, as their design allows them to move through the water faster and more efficiently than other boats.
Overall, catamarans have come a long way from their humble origins in the Indian subcontinent.
Today, they are a versatile and popular choice for sailing enthusiasts of all levels, and their history is a testament to their durability and longevity.
The Meaning of the Word Catamaran
The word catamaran is derived from the Tamil language of South India, where it literally means “tied wood”.
This refers to the traditional design of catamarans, which typically consists of two logs or planks of wood tied together with rope.
The original catamarans were used for transportation and fishing, and their widespread use in the Indian subcontinent has been documented since at least the 3rd century BCE.
Today, the term catamaran is often used to describe a wide range of multi-hulled vessels, from recreational sailing vessels to racing boats and even commercial vessels.
While all of these vessels share the same basic design, the modern catamaran has evolved over the centuries and now includes variations such as trimarans, trimarans, and even pontoon boats.
The development of the modern catamaran began in the late 18th century, when the first catamarans appeared in the West.
These vessels were developed for recreational sailing, and over time they have become increasingly popular for use in racing, cruising, and fishing.
Catamarans are well known for their stability and speed, and they are now used in a variety of applications, from leisure sailing to commercial shipping.
Ultimately, the word catamaran is derived from the Tamil language and it literally means “tied wood”.
Over the centuries, the catamaran has evolved and today it is used for everything from racing to cruising to fishing, and is renowned for its stability and speed.
Catamarans in the West
The first recorded appearance of catamarans in the Western world dates back to the late 18th century.
At the time, the vessels were brought to the Caribbean from the Indian subcontinent by traders and explorers.
They were quickly adopted by sailors for their speed and stability, as well as their ability to navigate shallow waters.
Catamarans were also popular among fishermen, as they could carry more cargo and could easily navigate shallow waters.
The vessels quickly spread across the globe, with catamarans becoming a popular recreational sailing vessel in the 19th century.
The vessels were a common sight in the Caribbean, and they eventually spread to other parts of the world, including the United States and Europe.
By the mid-20th century, catamarans had become a popular recreational sailing vessel, with many people using them for racing, cruising, and fishing.
Today, catamarans are used for a wide variety of activities, from recreational sailing to fishing and racing.
They are renowned for their stability and speed, and they are still popular among recreational sailors of all skill levels.
Catamarans continue to be used for transportation and fishing in the Indian subcontinent, where they originated, and they are still a popular sight in many parts of the world.
Uses of Catamarans
Catamarans have long been used for transportation and fishing in the Indian subcontinent, where the word “catamaran” originates from the Tamil language, meaning “tied wood.” This origin refers to the traditional design of tying two logs together to form the original catamaran.
Today, catamarans are used for a variety of purposes, from recreational sailing to racing, cruising, and fishing.
Catamarans are renowned for their stability and speed, making them ideal for traversing large bodies of water quickly.
They provide a stable platform for activities, such as fishing and diving, and offer increased living space when compared to conventional sailboats.
The increased stability of a catamaran also makes them ideal for use in areas with high winds and choppy waters, as they can handle the conditions better than traditional sailboats.
In addition to transportation and fishing, catamarans are also used for a variety of recreational activities.
They are popular among sailors due to their speed and maneuverability, and can be used for racing, cruising, and day-sailing.
Catamarans are also popular among families and large groups, as they provide ample space for socializing and relaxing.
Catamarans have come a long way since their humble beginnings in the Indian subcontinent, and are now an integral part of the sailing world.
With their stability, speed, and ample living space, catamarans are a great choice for both recreational and commercial use.
Racing with Catamarans
Catamarans have become a popular choice for racing enthusiasts all over the world.
This is due to their remarkable stability and speed, which make them ideal for competitive sailing.
Catamarans are able to cut through the water more efficiently than traditional sailing vessels, and their light weight makes them easier to maneuver.
In addition, their dual-hulls provide more surface area, allowing them to catch more wind and push through the water faster.
This makes them perfect for racing, as they can easily navigate tight turns and sail upwind faster than any other type of boat.
Catamarans are also well-suited for long-distance sailing, as they typically have more space than traditional vessels.
This extra space allows for more storage and greater comfort, making it easier for a crew to stay out on the water for longer periods of time.
Catamarans also have a relatively flat bottom, which reduces drag and helps make them faster than traditional boats.
Today, catamarans are used in a variety of sailing competitions, including the Americas Cup and the Volvo Ocean Race.
These races typically involve multiple catamarans, making them exciting spectacles to watch.
Catamarans have also become popular in recreational sailing, and many people use them for pleasure cruises and fishing trips.
No matter how it’s used, the catamaran has become an icon in the sailing world.
Its unique advantages have made it a favorite of both racers and recreational sailors alike, and its history makes it an interesting topic to explore.
Cruising with Catamarans
Catamarans are well-known for their stability and speed, making them a popular choice for recreational sailing.
Whether youre looking for a day of leisurely sailing or a thrilling race, catamarans offer an enjoyable experience that can be tailored to your individual needs.
Catamarans are especially suited to cruising, as they offer plenty of space for passengers and cargo, and their hulls dont require much maintenance.
Catamarans have a unique design that allows them to cruise efficiently and smoothly.
Their two hulls make them more stable than other boats, and their flat decks provide plenty of room for passengers to move around.
The spacious cabins provide plenty of space for sleeping, dining, and relaxing, and the cockpit is designed to make sailing easy and enjoyable.
Catamarans are also known for their speed and agility.
Their hulls are designed to cut through the water with minimal resistance, allowing them to reach speeds of up to 20 knots.
Their shallow draft also makes them ideal for shallow waters, allowing you to explore more areas than with a traditional monohull boat.
In addition to their speed and stability, catamarans are also known for their safety.
Their wide beam makes them less likely to capsize, and their two hulls help to spread the load, making them less susceptible to sinking than other vessels.
Catamarans also have a lower center of gravity, making them less likely to tip over in rough seas.
Whether youre looking for a leisurely day of sailing or a thrilling race, catamarans are an excellent choice for cruising.
With their stability, speed, and safety, they offer an enjoyable and accessible way to explore the open waters.
Fishing with Catamarans
The use of catamarans for fishing is nothing new, with the vessels first being used for the purpose in the Indian subcontinent thousands of years ago.
In the Tamil language of South India, the word catamaran comes from two words that literally mean tied wood, referring to how two logs were tied together to form the original catamaran design.
It was these vessels that were used for fishing, with two logs forming the base for the frame and a platform built on top for the fishermen to stand on.
These catamarans were incredibly versatile vessels, allowing fishermen to access shallow waters and maneuver quickly and easily to chase schools of fish.
They were also incredibly stable, and could carry a large amount of equipment and supplies, which made them ideal for long-distance fishing trips.
Today, modern catamarans are still used for fishing, with the vessels’ stable and maneuverable design still providing an ideal platform for fishermen.
Modern catamarans are made from a variety of materials, including fiberglass and aluminum, and are available in a range of sizes to suit different needs.
Catamarans are also popular for recreational fishing, with the vessels providing a great platform for anglers to enjoy their sport.
The popularity of catamarans for fishing is a testament to the versatility and effectiveness of these vessels.
With their stable and maneuverable design, their ability to access shallow waters, and their capacity to carry a large amount of equipment and supplies, they remain a popular choice for those looking to take to the water in pursuit of their catch.
Final Thoughts
Catamarans have come a long way since their humble beginnings in the Indian subcontinent.
From their simple design of two logs tied together, to today’s modern catamarans used for racing, cruising, and fishing, it’s amazing to think about all the ways these vessels have evolved.

"They say it takes a village to raise a child. Paper Boat was molded early on by Catamaran's guidance almost as much as it was by its co-founders. Catamaran has been to Paper Boat what the North Star is to those who sail—a guiding light that has helped us realize our core values and is always there through the ups and downs to keep us on course. On a personal note, my bond with Catamaran is most special, as NRN is the only reason I took to entrepreneurship in the first place."

- Shade Fishing from Catamarans in India
2 comments:
Hi Robert, If you do a google search of kattumaram, you'll get a load of hits of these boat in use for fishing today from the west coast [kerala region] all the way around into the Bay of Benghal up to Sri Lanka. some examples: http://www.katamkera-voyages.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Catamaran-891x668.jpg Tamil Nadu area: http://i1.trekearth.com/photos/66967/07032501.jpg Jaffna region: http://amazinglanka.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/DSCF8343-1024x518.jpg Sri Lanka region: http://images.deccanchronicle.com/dc-Cover-42n4n1fs9f6hon1n7cjc1q2lj6-20161014080633.Medi.jpeg I couldn't find a web photo, but there are some amazing photo of kattumarams outfitted with longtail engines surfing along and around the coastal waves. One of the interesting related boats is the Wooden Teppa [sometimes teppan] that is an only slightly more refined kattumaram with 2 small added washstrakes. It would be interesting to know what and where and why the change or improvement. photo http://www.uwa-pro.de/projekte/bilder/14-s.jpg linesplans: http://www.uwa-pro.de/projekte/bilder/20-s.jpg ** as I have mentioned before, I believe all the indigenous wooden craft in India are threatened because of high wood prices, loss of artisans, and possibly some job migration. One can see this in that even the lowly kattumaram is being replaced by GRP versions: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/TDEGMd_8aTs/maxresdefault.jpg However, these GRP boats are slightly provocative as they are quite stable, could be reinvented as multichamber inflatables and possibly distributed here as quick and easy and safe and cheap sit-on-tops. regards mick allen
Mick, Many thanks for this. The Teppa/teppan is most interesting. As the elevation drawing shows, this is a pretty sophisticated hull: from the plan view, you wouldn't know it was a raft. It's also fascinating that a raft-style boat would be reproduced in GRP. The design must fulfill its users' needs so well, and/or there is a strong cultural attachment to the design independent of its practicality. I would expect that most boatmen would prefer not to be wet and would more readily adopt a traditional displacement hull, if given the chance, but that's obviously not the case here.

Couple with Treasure Coast ties believed killed after boat hijacked in Grenada
FORT PIERCE — A missing couple with Treasure Coast ties are believed to have been killed when their catamaran yacht was hijacked in Grenada, where the couple had sailed.
The Royal Grenada Police Force said in a statement released Friday that they were working on leads “that suggest” that the two occupants of their yacht — named Simplicity — may have been killed, according to the Associated Press.
The Associated Press did not name the couple. But WPTV-Channel 5 identified them as Ralph Hendry, 66, and his wife, Kathy Brandel, 71, who spent their winters docked at a Fort Pierce marina, according to Hendry's sister, Suellen Desmaris of Fort Pierce.
"This was their whole life. They didn't own another home, they didn't own cars, they owned Simplicity," Desmarais told WPTV . "And when you were invited onto Simplicity, you were made to feel as magical as they were and as magical as that boat was."
Desmaris did not return calls to TCPalm on Saturday.
The Virginia couple sailed to the Caribbean in November, according to the WPTV report.
Authorities are investigating what happened to the couple after their yacht was hijacked, apparently by three escaped prisoners. Preliminary reports suggest the prisoners hijacked the yacht in St. George’s, Grenada, and traveled to the nearby island of St. Vincent, according to the AP.
On Feb. 18, three prisoners, ages 19, 25 and 30, escaped from their holding cell in Grenada, the AP said, citing reports from the Royal Grenada Police Force. Each of the prisoners was charged a couple of months ago with one count of robbery with violence. The 30-year-old also had been charged with one count of rape, three counts of attempted rape and two counts of indecent assault, the AP said.
The prisoners were captured Wednesday in St. Vincent, the AP said. The occupants of the yacht were missing, reports said.
While Desmarais told WPTV she hoped the couple would be found alive, a GoFundMe account in their name has been set up to pay for funeral expenses and return of the couple's yacht.
"It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the devastating news of the senseless act of violence that tragically claimed the lives of husband and wife, Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel," said a GoFundMe account set up by Brandel's son, Nick Buro, and friend Jessica Mause. The account said the couple were "seasoned sailors" and "experienced adventurers" who spent their retirement sailing.
As of Saturday, the account had raised $16,216. The money raised will go directly to Buro and Hendry's son, Bryan Hendry.
The couple previously had docked their catamaran at the Safe Harbor Harbortown Marina in Fort Pierce.
"They were the sweetest people," Keith Mallamo said in an email to TCPalm. Mallamo said he was friends with the couple when they docked their vessels at the marina in Fort Pierce.
One Christmas, Brandel baked cookies for everyone on the dock, and Hendry was always available to help his fellow sailors, Mallamo wrote.
