Sanlorenzo’s Biggest-Ever Superyacht … By Far: Attila The Fun

  • June 10, 2020

More than three times the volume of Sanlorenzo’s previous flagship, the first 64Steel is more notable for its stunning beach club and pool.

Some yacht layouts are so predictable that you could practically walk through the boat with your eyes closed and still find your way around. But in recent years, more designers and builders are breaking the mould and creating something else entirely, which is what Sanlorenzo has done with its new flagship, the 64Steel  Attila.

The first 64Steel has a helipad and a volume of 1,600GT, so was a huge step up for the Argentine owner, whose previous yacht was a Sanlorenzo 46Steel; Photos: ©Guillaume Plisson for Sanlorenzo

A superyacht with a unique layout customised to suit her owner’s lifestyle, the 64.25m  Attila  is the largest yacht to emerge from the Italian builder, by some way. It’s 12m longer than the 52Steel  Seven Sins  and at 1,600GT, more than three times the volume of the builder’s 499GT former flagship.

The  Attila  owner’s previous boat was the Sanlorenzo 46Steel,  Achilles . The first 64Steel represents not just a step up in size for this owner and her builder but also in scope. She brims with creative ideas and big- ticket amenities that you would expect to find on a much larger yacht.

With bold exterior lines by Officina Italia Design and a striking silver hull,  Attila  is certainly a head-turner. Interior design and decor are by Francesco Paszkowski and Margherita Casprini, who worked in concert with the owner and Sanlorenzo to create the calm interior motif and unusual layout.

SUMMER LIVING

The moment you enter  Attila , you can tell she is different. The owner’s idea was to get rid of a formal main saloon and create a way for everyone to be connected as they enjoyed the yacht throughout day. “Who is using a big saloon in a boat?” says the owner of  Attila . “They are not. In the end, in the summer, you are outside.”

“Who is using a big saloon? In the summer, you are outside.”

“Who is using a big saloon? In the summer, you are outside.”

Stepping into the main-deck living area, you have to take a moment to get your bearings. Instead of a foyer or saloon, you enter directly into the dining room, which is anything but a formal affair.

The first thing you see upon entering this room is dual staircases to port and starboard, leading to the expansive beach club below, which is bathed in light from the glass-bottom pool above on the main deck aft. Sliding glass doors open on both sides of the dining room to let in fresh air.

“This is unique,” says Antonio Santella, Sanlorenzo’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “We have this connection between the pool, al fresco veranda, dining area and beach club. People are not divided into different groups. They are all together.”

ARGENTINE GRILL

A 10-seat wood dining table, backed by a bar and a huge grill, consumes the room. Placing a barbecue inside the yacht’s living spaces – essentially inviting open fire onto the main deck – was no easy task. It challenged the yard to find creative solutions, which emerged with the use of A60 fireproof stainless steel as well as installing a special system to remove smoke.

This barbecue is just one of the elements that speaks to her owner’s Argentine origins and love for grilling meat. Another is the copious, dedicated meat storage found on board – during my visit I was shown 450kg of meat stored on the tank deck.

With her enormous volume and 13.1m beam – wider than most yachts of her length –  Attila  has the room to pack in all of her owner’s special requests as well as amenities you’d usually find on larger yachts.

“All the design ideas you see in this boat are typical of boats 90m and over, and we are only 64m,” Santella says. “This was the goal: to give something more and be similar to a 90m or 100m boat.”

The main dining room on the Sanlorenzo 64Steel has seating for 12

This includes items such as a touch-and-go helipad, storage for two big 10m-plus tenders, and a 78sqm beach club with a gym, sauna and massage room.

Another big-boat goal, according to Santella, was to have all the guest living spaces on the main deck. There are four double cabins and one master-worthy VIP on the main deck that any guest would feel lucky to have. To achieve this layout, the only ‘saloon’ on the main deck is a cosy cinema lounge.

A larger, but still cosy, saloon is found on the upper or bridge deck, adjacent to another dining area for 14. This deck also houses the Captain’s cabin and a cabin for a nanny or staff member, while the bridge is forward, enjoying excellent sight lines.

OWNER’S HAVEN

The deck above is a space completely dedicated to the owner, as per his exacting brief. “The main characteristic of this boat is the fact that the owner wanted to have a full deck completely private for him,” Santella says.

The owner’s deck features a spacious lounge

This palatial suite includes a large en-suite bathroom, walk-in wardrobe and a forward-facing bedroom opening out onto a private terrace with a pool.

Aft on this deck is a private living room opening onto an outdoor lounge area. It’s the ideal personal space for an owner who says he plans to use the boat “as much as possible.”

Between  Attila ’s delivery and world premiere at last year’s Monaco Yacht Show, he had already used his new boat for three months.

The owner loves to be outside, but if he happens to be stuck inside more than he likes, the calming yet cool interior should be a pleasure in which to spend time. The designers wanted to create something that was modern yet timeless, choosing a soothing palette of grey, white and brown and a plethora of natural materials.

The interior is replete in marble, backlit onyx, glass, stainless steel and teak, the owner’s favourite wood. Furnishings come from Italian brands like Flexform sofas and Catellani & Smith light fixtures, while Summit has provided suitably chic exterior furniture.

Sanlorenzo admits that building this owner-specific, technically intrinsic yacht was a challenge, but it’s one they relished.

“Every boat for us is a challenge,” says Santella. “We don’t build a boat without innovation. On every Sanlorenzo boat, there is something different from all the others.”

For those who want to push the envelope even further, the technical platform of the 64Steel is designed to extended up 70m. Perhaps this owner, after he’s had plenty of time to chill and grill on his new yacht, will be ready to go even bigger yet.

Attila  proves that the sky’s the limit for what an innovative yard, designers and owner can create when they combine forces.

Sanlorenzo 29m yacht Don't Tell Mom for sale

$801k price drop on 29m Sanlorenzo yacht Don't Tell Mom

A $801,000 price drop has been announced on the 29.3-metre Sanlorenzo motor yacht Don't Tell Mom , listed for sale with Boomer Jousma of The Italian Yacht Group.

Built by the Italian yard in 2021, the SD96 is a highly customised yacht with hand-selected details chosen by an experienced owner. Don't Tell Mom has a warm and inviting interior designed in-house and characterised by a modern look.

Accommodation is for eight guests across four cabins, comprising two cabins located on the lower deck and an owner's cabin found on the main deck. On the lower deck, the saloon can be transformed into a VIP cabin with an en suite by closing a system of sliding panels.

On the main deck, guests can make the most of a dining table for 10 people, folded away inside a bench in front of the sofa.

The central staircase on the main deck connects to the other two decks, including the skylounge with fully opening windows. The space can be used as a living room, dining area, or cinema thanks to modular furniture. Up on the flybridge, there is a coffee table which can be converted to a dining table if desired.

Notable details include an awning for the upper deck aft, upgraded skylounge side doors – in lieu of standard fixed glass – and a sliding bulwark starboard.

Upgraded electronics include a portable MTU control station and additional wing station with engine throttles and bow thruster. Powered by a pair of diesel engines, the yacht for sale can reach a top speed of 19 knots and has a cruising speed of 14 knots.

Currently lying in Sag Harbor, New York for the summer, Don't Tell Mom is asking $7,499,000.

From the only Four Seasons Private Marina in the world to Saudi Arabia’s first superyacht destination, here are seven of the latest and greatest superyacht marinas around the world.

Los Cabos, Mexico

Four Seasons Los Cabos

Best feature: The only Four Seasons Private Marina in the world

Often compared to popular yachting destinations along the French and Italian Rivieras, the Sea of Cortez was coined “the aquarium of the world” by Jacques Cousteau, and is home to more than 900 different species of fish. The Four Seasons Private Marina, located on Mexico ’s East Cape of Los Cabos, brings the group’s celebrated approach to hospitality to the world of yachting. The marina village includes the East Cape’s first nightclub and lounge, and Delphine beach club created in collaboration with Michelin-star chef Ludo Lefebvre and Fabien Cerato.

Sindalah Island, Saudi Arabia

Sindalah

Best feature: Saudi Arabia’s first superyacht destination

Penned by yacht designer Luca Dini, NEOM’s Sindalah Island marina provides a scenic gateway to the biodiverse Red Sea. Set to open by the end of 2024, Sindalah pairs world-class cuisine, shopping and wellness with a beach club, yacht club, spa, and hotels  including the first Marriott Autograph Collection and Luxury Collection hotels in Saudi Arabia.

Berths: 86 up to 246 feet

Vilamoura, Portugal

Vilamoura

Best feature: The top birdwatching in the Algarve is in Vilamoura’s Environmental Park

Berths : 68 up to 130 feet

Shell Bay, Miami

Shell Bay

Best feature: Private championship golf course

Shell Bay, located just north of Miami, is a 150-acre private enclave with a yacht marina, a 60-key boutique resort, 108 private residences, and the first new private golf club in the Miami area in more than 20 years. The waterfront development provides a clear path straight out to the Atlantic for yacht owners and charterers alike, including catamaran snorkel tours and deep-sea fishing excursions. The chef at Shell Bay can even prepare guests’ fresh catches cooked to their culinary liking.

Berths : 48 slips

D-Marin, Italy

D-Marin

Best feature: Private beach, spa and amphitheater

Though technically not new marinas, D-Marin’s acquisition of Marina degli Aregai and Marina di San Lorenzo in January 2024 signals the demand for more yacht berths in the area. Located along the Riviera dei Fiori, a 36-mile stretch of coastline known for its natural beauty and cultural heritage, the two marinas are well placed to capture yachts cruising the nearby coveted stops of Cannes and Monaco, as well as the exclusive coastal towns of Sanremo and San Lorenzo al Mare.  Berths : Marina degli Aregai 961 for yachts up to 164 feet; Marina di San Lorenzo 268 for yachts up to 130 feet.

Elounda Hills, Greece

Elounda Hills

Best feature: First boutique facility branded by Camper & Nicholsons Marinas

Just a short tender ride from Agios Nikolaos and with views across the sentinel-like island of Spinalonga, Elounda Hills — set to open in 2026 close to the chic fishing village of Elounda — is heralded as the largest private marina in Greece . Located in the sought after Mirabello Bay, on Crete’s famously terraced northeast coast, the marina’s robust breakwater design provides year-round protection and long-term berthing facilities.

Habacoa, The Bahamas

Habacoa

Best feature: Yacht Club designed by Zaha Hadid Architects

The Bahamas has long been a favorite cruising ground for yachts, beloved for its clear shallow waters, island-hopping opportunities and proximity to Florida’s coast. Habacoa, in South Abaco, is set to become the largest superyacht marina in North America when it opens in late 2027. Alongside a 25,000-square-foot members-only Yacht Club, 40 of the 79 oceanfront and cliffside residences will each have a private boat slip of up to 100 feet.

Deceased father named as suspect in death of 3-year-old Bay Area girl; mom feared for her safety

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Investigators in San Jose on Tuesday identified the suspect in the death of a 3-year-old girl as her father, according to police.

Jared Lorenzo, 42, died by suicide in San Francisco on Friday. The girl, Ellie Lorenzo, was last seen alive with her father, who had custody of her, on Thursday around 6 p.m. at his apartment in Fremont, according to police.

Investigators believe Lorenzo drove to San Jose early the next morning, removed Ellie's body from the trunk of his vehicle and disposed of Ellie's body in a trash receptacle.

This receptacle was emptied and unknowingly transferred to the recycling facility where Ellie's body was found Saturday, police added. The girl was then positively identified on Monday as a child who went missing from Fremont, according to a Santa Clara County medical examiner.

Police also said Lorenzo likely drove to multiple neighboring Bay Area cities before stopping in San Francisco, where he was found deceased shortly after 11 a.m. Friday.

Ellie's death was San Jose's 19th homicide of 2024.

Ellie's mother, Chyrstal Obi, said in a statement on Tuesday she feared for her daughter Ellie's safety anytime Ellie visited her father, Jared Lorenzo.

Obi even took action to try to protect Ellie.

The statement reads in part, "I wanted desperately for her constant supervision and safety each time she was with him for court ordered visitation. Last week, on Tuesday I finally received confirmation that the courts would allow me to move with Ellie out of state, of which he also became aware."

The motive and circumstances, as well as the manner of Ellie's death, remain under investigation.

Ellie's family has set up a GoFundMe to help with her funeral expenses.

  • Sanlorenzo will display its artistic design visions by unveiling a custom project at Art Basel Hong Kong next week - before heading to Basel, Miami and Paris, and Design Week in Milan
  • The founding of Casa Sanlorenzo as its future cultural hub in Venice illustrates how its legacy could extend beyond the world of yachting to the realms of art, sustainability and community engagement

Italian custom luxury yacht builder Sanlorenzo sets sail on a new cultural venture by revealing the latest details regarding Casa Sanlorenzo at Art Basel Hong Kong this year.

Guided by its passion for transcending trends through its timeless custom luxury yacht designs, the shipyard injects the same dedication to excellence into Casa Sanlorenzo, the future headquarters of Sanlorenzo Arts, which is set to open its doors in Venice this year.

Sanlorenzo's art director, Piero Lissoni, brings this ethos in design and performance to every custom-built vessel. Tapping into more than six decades of know-how at the Italian shipyard, Lissoni has forged a new path, redefining the conventions of design and artistic expression in the realm of luxury superyachts.

Yacht lives of the rich and famous, from Jeff Bezos to Diane von Furstenberg

The art director's vision for bespoke vessels first appeared in the SX88 motoryacht at Cannes Yachting Festival 2017. Lissoni brings an approach that facilitates new potential nautical design scenarios, putting modern and elegant spins on classic yacht design that reflects Sanlorenzo's legacy.

Sanlorenzo Asia-Pacific, represented by Simpson Marine, brings this exquisite Italian tradition of luxury yachting to the region by offering Asian yacht owners exclusive opportunities to create bespoke vessels that bring whole new meaning to opulence at sea.

The celebration of Italian artistic and cultural tenets at the shipyard extends beyond the world of yachting. Sanlorenzo Arts, soon to be headquartered in Venice inside the beautiful confines of Casa Sanlorenzo, paves the way for the brand to take on a pivotal role in arts, culture and sustainability.

Sanlorenzo Arts is a culmination of Sanlorenzo's artistic dedication to design and an effort to take on socio-economic challenges through art. A celebration of culture, the programme offers educational events, conferences and conversations with artists.

The Italian shipyard chose Venice as the home of Casa Sanlorenzo as a sign of its commitment to sustainability. A founding member of the Fondazione Venezia Capitale Mondiale della SostenibilitA (Venice Sustainability Foundation), Sanlorenzo looks to spotlight the city in its efforts to redefine global standards for environmental sustainability.

Its efforts in sustainability are just one example of Casa Sanlorenzo's initiatives to enrich the cultural context of Venice in an effort to boost societal change through community engagement.

The group hopes to bring forth the same dedication to refinement, timeless design and arts through its unique lens as a luxury shipbuilder to the range of community outreach, sustainability, artists in residence and arts and culture programmes that Casa Sanlorenzo, as the headquarters of Sanlorenzo Arts, will offer.

These custom projects, beyond being unique works of art, are first and foremost beacons of Sanlorenzo's timeless craftsmanship, originality and impeccable construction.

The most fabulous yachts to charter this summer

jalopnik

There are an estimated 6,000 superyachts — vessels that are more than 100 feet long — at sea in 2024

As summer reaches its peak across the Northern Hemisphere, it’s hard to imagine a better way of spending a vacation than channeling your inner ship captain and sailing across the ocean.

In recent years, yacht companies have reported a boom in sales — far from the decline that many in the industry feared, due to both the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic realities of the Russia-Ukraine War.

“I spent my days [in 2020] doing worst-case scenarios and drawing up the budgets to go with them,” Giovanna Vitelli, chairwoman of Azimut|Benetti, the world’s largest yacht manufacturer, told the Economist in 2023.

Instead, her company reported a 23% growth in production value in 2023 —a reality that is not unique to just one yacht manufacturer. The luxury yacht market is expected to grow in value from $7.67 billion in 2023 to $17.33 billion by 2032, according to a recent report from Fortune Business Insights .

Analysts attribute the ships’ rise in popularity to the increasing number of extremely wealthy individuals . Yachts have long been considered a status symbol — a reality that has only increased as wealth becomes concentrated in the hands of a small group of high status individuals .

There are an estimated 6,000 superyachts —vessels that are more than 100 feet long — at sea as of this year. This is nearly quadruple the number of yachts seen in the ocean just three decades ago, according to Bloomberg .

Aside from an increase in popularity, the yacht industry has seen other changes in recent years. Increasingly, those in the market for a luxury ship are turning to alternate means of powering their vessels, as critics point to the excess emissions traditional yachts produce simply for recreational use.

In their 2024 report, Fortune Business Insights highlighted the growing trend of electrification as a significant area of growth in the coming years.

“A tough regulatory environment for traditional yachts and rising fuel prices will pave the way for the solid growth of electric yachts in the future,” the report reads. “Huge investments from various manufacturers and government support measures will accelerate the demand for electric yachts.”

Read on to learn more about the most luxurious yachts available for chartering in 2024.

The interior of the Ahpo yacht seems more reminiscent of a luxury hotel than a simple ship. Accommodating 16 guests and 36 crew members, the vessel features a full-size gym, a winter garden and a spa complete with a Himalayan salt sauna. The 378-foot long yacht was first manufactured in 2021 by the German shipyard Lürssen. Excited sailors can charter the Ahpo from superyacht broker Edmiston, beginning at $2,833,376 a week.

Interested travelers can rent the ship for $359,609 a week.

The Renaissance

The Renaissance lives up to its grandiose name by going beyond traditional private yachts and bridging the gap between a personal vehicle and a full-on cruise ship. The 367-foot long ship features five decks and can accommodate 36 guests in 19 cabins. The Renaissance’s amenities include a 19-seat movie theater, a sushi-bar, and a full spa deck featuring a wellness area, plunge pools and a hair salon. The cost of chartering the ship from Burgess Yachts ranges from $3,269,280 to $3,814,160 a week.
