AZTECA Yacht – Extraordinary $80M Superyacht

CRN’s naval architects worked with Ferretti Group’s Advanced Yacht Technology department and Venice-based Nuvolari Lenard design to build a boat that is modern, elegant, and perfect for family life at sea.

Delivered in 2010, AZTECA is an impressive 72m yacht designed for a comfortable yet elegant onboard experience.

The original owner who commissioned the AZTECA, Francisco Hernando, was very involved in the design elements of the yacht.

AZTECA yacht interior

Nuvolari Lenard’s Valentina Zannier designed the interior of the AZTECA yacht which includes warm and sober tones from cream to dark brown and features walnut, glossy rosewood, and mahogany.

The yacht has accommodation for 16 guests in 8 cabins and cabins to house 28 crew members.

The crew members also have a crew mess and gym on the tank deck. There is a sky lounge, a separate cinema room, a spa, and a hair salon.

She also has an expansive sundeck full of amenities for entertaining in the indoor/outdoor space.

Francisco Hernando, the original owner, was intimately involved in the vessel’s design to create a guest experience close to the water.

The beach club is impressively sized and opens with a massive transom door that creates an indoor/outdoor area with a bar and salon.

The tender garage is filled with water toys like jet skis and a low-profile tender. The yacht features extensive pantry options, making it an excellent vessel for entertaining.

The entertainment features of the AZTECA yacht were one of the many reasons that Pliego bought the $80 Million Superyacht.

Her exterior exudes elegance and power with a streamlined gray-painted steel hull and light cream-colored aluminum superstructure. She has teak decking and consists of 4 decks.

The exterior was designed by Nuvolari Lenard and built by CRN yachts in 2010. Azteca is the largest boat built by CRN at the time of her launch.

Motor Yacht

Motor yacht Azteca, formally Clarena II, was built in 2009 by Italian shipyard CRN and at the time of her launch she was the largest yacht ever to be launched by the company. With a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, she features naval architecture by CRN and the interior and exterior design talents of Nuvolari & Lenard. This twin-screw superyacht measures 72 metres and can accommodate up to 12 guests.

Built specifically for guests to interact closely with the ocean, motor yacht Azteca is the latest build for the previous owner of the 2003, 46 metre Clarena also designed by Nuvolari & Lenard.

The new Azteca, known as hull number 124, was designed through thoughtful analysis of the Owner’s wishes, resulting in a dashing hull-shape, a sharp bow, and modern, streamlined external forms.

Her owner desired a yacht that would be a perfect tribute to family life at sea, and her designers honoured this request by incorporating an innovative 100 square-metre beach club aft.

Here, the swim platform transforms into a large beach area almost in the sea itself, fully equipped with a shower and chairs ideal for sunbathing. For those who wish to sit inside, the adjoining internal area is designed for comfort and relaxation, outfitted with sofas so guests can enjoy the proximity of the sea.

Amongst her six cabins are a lavish owner suite and five double cabins. The accommodations are well-worth a mention onboard Azteca; the Owner’s suite alone covers 120 square-metres. Found forward on the main deck, the suite is accessed via private lobby and includes his and hers bathroom, separate massage room and cinema room. Perhaps most striking of all is the hatch that can be lowered 90 degrees to act as a balcony hovering directly over the waves.

There are also accommodations onboard to cater for a crew of up to 28.

Luxury yacht Azteca is powered by two Caterpillar 3516B-CHD engines that allow her to reach a maximum speed of 16.5 knots and cruise comfortably at 15 knots. She can achieve a range of 6,000 nautical miles while cruising at a speed of 12 knots.

As the largest CRN yacht ever built, the 124 needed her own special operating structure to be built. Measuring 95 metres long and 25 metres high, the 2,660 square-metre structure becomes the biggest in the production facility.

Mexico's five luxury superyacht owners.

When it comes to personal choices, some of Mexico's superrich like to buy real estate, art collections, and zoos with exotic animals, while others prefer luxury yachts, expensive and professionally crewed vessels. There are currently five Mexican billionaires and millionaires known to own luxury yachts, according to superyachtfan.com , a web site about luxury yachts and their secretive owners.

Because of her outstanding lavishness, Tsumat --a 164 foot tri-deck custom built super yacht bought by Mexican millionaire Alfredo Chedraui Obeso--outshines the other yachts owned by Mexicans. Chedraui is Chairman of Grupo Comercial Chedraui.

In  December 2012,  Trinity Yachts , Tsumat' s U.S. based builder, announced   Tsumat's delivery to her owner in a press release that did not identify the owner by name.  According to Trinity Yachts,   Tsumat 's layout includes six state rooms which are able to accommodate 12 people. There is living space for the 11 crew in the lower deck. A tender garage, instead of the usual helipad,  allows for an oversized sundeck with workout stations and entertaining options. The sundeck has a hot tub, bar, dining for eight, quad chaise lounging, treadmills, weights and large sunning areas.

Tsumat (Photo credit: superyachtfan.com)

Tsumat 's interior features open-grain walnut and dark oak veneer accents, hand-stitched leather walls, wool carpets, heated onyx floors, backlit onyx columns, custom-made onyx sinks, natural granite and onyx slabs as well as different marble blocks imported from Mexico. Transitional areas like foyers and stairs are distinguished with chocolate tile leather floors and leather covered railings.

Wall and ceiling panels are upholstered in suede. Leather headboards in the guest suites continue around to the side walls. Even the doors and hinges are wrapped in leather. Pieces of art from the owner's private collection are displayed throughout.

Tsumat, which reportedly means "beautiful girl" or "princess" in an ancient Mexican indigenous language, was commissioned to Trinity Yachts in 2009 and delivered to Chedraui in December 2012. Chedraui closely monitored the process. According to Boat International, "the owner" was very hands-on and visited the yard upwards of 20 times during the build. With an estimated price of $50 million, Tsumat replaced Tajin , which Chedraui sold in 2009. Tajin was also built by Trinity Yachts.

Tsumat is registered in U.S. records under Alfredo Chedraui, with his company Grupo Comercial Chedraui's headquarters in Veracruz's capital, Xalapa, as the address. Yet people close to Chedraui declined to confirm the owner's identity. William Smith, spokesperson for Trinity Yachts, told me by email that the company's policy "is not to comment on any potential or actual owners of our yachts." Patricia Medina, Chedraui's secretary in Veracruz, told me that her boss is out of the country and that she was not authorized to disclose any information. Tsumat's leading interior designer, Ramón Alonso of Loguer Design with offices in Mexico and Miami, did not return emails or phone calls.

Ricardo Salinas Pliego (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Why the secrecy? "It most likely has to do with both taxes and privacy. Yachts are mostly owned through off-shore companies to avoid taxes or ownership duties," an American expert on luxury yachts who requested not to be named told me.

Privacy is also an issue. Mexican owners of luxury yachts are controversial figures who typically run big corporations which often face labor disputes. By hiding their lavish yachting lifestyle, in a country where half of the population lives below the poverty line, owners may be trying to avoid a public opinion backlash caused by displaying further proof of economic inequality. The combined estimated value of the yachts owned by Mexicans is just shy of $600 million.

The following are the Mexicans who, according to superyachtfan.com, own luxury yachts:

Alfredo Chedraui Obeso , Tsumat 's owner is a low-key businessman of Lebanese descent from the state of Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico. As Chairman of Grupo Comercial Chedraui, he runs one of Mexico's leading retailers. With brother Antonio and other family members, including son José Antonio Chedraui Eguía, Alfredo oversees the company founded by his immigrant grandparents in 1920. In 2013, Forbes Mexico estimated Alfredo Chedraui's net worth at $931 million, and Antonio's at $656 million.

Emilio Azcárraga Jean , chief executive of Grupo Televisa, Mexico's television monopoly, owns the yacht " TV ", a 259.84 foot vessel built by Lürssen Yachts in 2008. Azcárraga is reportedly trying to sell "TV" for $180 million. Yachts are part of the Azcárraga family. The luxury yacht Eco, owned by his late father Emilio Azcárraga Milmo, was sold by son Emilio after Azcárraga Milmo died in 1997. With a net worth estimated by Forbes at $3 billion, Emilio Azcárraga Jean ranks # 555 richest in the world.

Alberto Bailleres owns Grupo Bal, a holding company which controls Industrias Peñoles, the second biggest Mexican mining company and the largest silver producer, as well as El Palacio de Hierro, a department store chain. Bailleres's Mayan Queen  is a 301.84 foot yacht built by Blohm & Voss in 2008, which is reported to have cost $140 million. With a net worth estimated by Forbes at $11.3 billion, Bailleres is Mexico's third richest person.

Ricardo Salinas Pliego owns retail, banking and Mexico's second largest TV network, TV Azteca. His luxury super yacht, " Azteca ," is a 236.22 footer built in 2009 by CRN Spa with an estimated built value of $80 million. With a net worth estimated by Forbes at $7.4 billion, Salinas ranks # 177 richest in the world.

Carlos Peralta Quintero , Chairman and CEO of Grupo IUSA, was listed by CNNExpansión among Mexico's 100 top businessmen in 2013. In 2012, Peralta sold Princess Mariana , a 250 foot yacht built by Fraser Yachts. The asking price was $180 million. Peralta currently owns Moon Goddess , a $7 million 115 foot chase boat. In the 1990s, Peralta said he gave Raúl Salinas de Gortari, the former President's brother who became a symbol of Mexico's corruption and impunity, $50 million, no receipts given and no questions asked. The funds ended up in a secret Swiss bank account.

CRN , the luxury yachting Ferretti Group brand, has recently unveiled its latest mega yacht, Azteca . At 72 metres, Azteca, is the largest yacht to be produced by CRN and the longest coming out of Italy this year.

Azteca combines a “made in italy” style with cutting-edge design and technology. The sophisticated slender shape of the hull and the racy external lines, accentuated by the pronounced stern characterize and distinguish the Azteca from other mega yachts of its size – breaking the expectation that big boats can’t have a “sporty” soul.

Azteca was created in collaboration with Nuvolari & Lenard , renowned Italian luxury yacht designers.

“Our design team and production house truly rose to the challenge of delivering Azteca; our passion and dedication to our craft is apparent in our longest and most technologically advanced yacht to date. Carefully designed to ensure guests feel a strong bond with the sea, Azteca pays homage to luxury and refinement”, – comments Lamberto Tacoli, chairman of CRN and Chief Sales and Marketing Officer of the Ferretti Group.

At the stern of the lower deck, a completely innovative area has been designed as an authentic “beach club” of more than 100 sq m. This area can be transformed into a large beach close to the sea and is equipped with an external shower and a sun deck. At the back there is a wide indoor space for relaxation where guests can lie on comfortable sofas by the sea and enjoy aperitifs from the bar.

The main deck hosts the ship owner’s suite as well as two suites which serve as accommodation for some of the 12 guests. The owner’s suite was designed to link directly to the sea through a door which can be folded at 90 degrees from within the cabin to act as a “terrace” overlooking the ocean. The two bathrooms, one reserved for each half of the ship owning couple, are entirely covered with marble and embellished with inserts of brown Tiger’s eye for the male bathroom and a slab of mother-of-pearl for the female room. A cinema room equipped with a 65-inch screen, a large wardrobe and a massage room complete the owner’s suite.

On the lower deck, there are two VIP cabins for guests and two standard cabins for the staff at their service. This deck also holds 12 lodgings reserved for the crew who can enjoy a wide space organised so that it facilitates their living and working in the best way possible. The wide spaces of the lower deck are also used for storage: refrigerating cells, the laundry area and two big garages holding 10 metre long Riva Shuttles with a maximum speed of 45 knots, a seven metre long service tender and four jet skis.

The upper deck incorporates a different layout to make the most of wide spaces. It includes the “Special VIP” cabin which has a wide view and complete discretion, and the captain’s cabin which is at the stem, in a cabin adjacent to the radio room and the steerage, equipped with the most modern navigation systems. A large panoramic lift with crystal walls and a decorated marble floor links the three upper decks.

The sun deck of the Azteca is unique at 33 metres long and 10 metres wide. It is entirely dedicated to outdoor life with large sofas, a bar area, jacuzzi and several sun beds as well as enough space for a 2,500 kg helicopter to land at the stem. There is a fitness area with Techno-gym equipment allowing guests to carry out fitness sessions while enjoying the panoramic view.

The engine room has a separate control room and two Caterpillar motors 3516 push Azteca at a maximum speed of 16.5 knots and a cruising speed of 15.

See Four Seasons' upcoming ultra-luxury cruise with a $350,000-a-week suite bigger than most homes

  • Four Seasons says it will begin sailing an  ultra-luxury yacht cruise in January 2026.
  • The 222-guest vessel would have 95 spacious suites and 11 dining options — but food wouldn't be free.
  • The largest suite would have four floors and bedrooms, a spa, and a price of $350,000 per sailing.

Insider Today

Four Seasons plans to expand its high-end hotels and resorts portfolio with a luxury 222-guest cruise ship.

The company says the 95-suite vessel will debut in January 2026 and cost a minimum of $20,000 per weeklong sailing.

For that price, the luxury hospitality giant says travelers would enjoy a one-to-one guest-to-staff ratio and massive suites spanning as many as four floors. If all goes as planned, the 679-foot-long Four Seasons I could become one of the most expensive and opulent options in the cruise industry.

The ultra-plush 14-deck Four Seasons I is scheduled for 19 voyages in 2026 to more than 130 Caribbean and Mediterranean ports.

Reservations opened two weeks ago. Those interested can register to join a waitlist or book through a travel agent.

So far, "sales have been very encouraging, and the demand is exciting to see," Thatcher Brown, chief commercial officer and head of joint operations for Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings, told Business Insider in a statement. The company is a joint owner and operator of Four Seasons Yachts.

Renderings make the Four Seasons I look as opulent as the brand's land-based properties.

Four Seasons says its vessel will have 95 suites ranging from 537 to 9,975 square feet, some with three bedrooms.

The smallest suite starts at $19,700 for a five-night roundtrip voyage to Athens, Greece.

No windowless interior cabins here: Like other ultra-luxe cruises, the suites would all have terraces and floor-to-ceiling windows.

Customers could expect upscale amenities like a walk-in closet, down-filled duvets and pillows, and marble dual vanity bathrooms, per Four Seasons.

The most premium suites would also feature additional accommodations for "personal assistants," such as au pairs or security personnel.

Some options, like the 7,952-square-foot Loft Suite, could be adjoined with seven other cabins to accommodate up to 20 people.

Without connecting cabins, the Loft Suite would already have three bedrooms and bathrooms, a powder room, and a sauna.

Others, like the largest Funnel Suite, would have its own spa and kitchen.

Four Seasons says the 9,975-square-foot mansion, partially perched in the ship's glass-lined funnel , will span four floors, four bathrooms, three bedrooms, and three powder rooms.

Not to mention the private elevator, pool, and $350,000-a-voyage price tag.

Accommodations of this price and size are generally unheard of in the cruise industry.

Luxury operator Silversea says the largest suite on its upcoming 728-guest Silver Ray will be 1,324 square feet. Competitor Regent Seven Seas' new Seven Seas Grandeur debuted in 2023 with a more expansive six-guest 4,443-square-foot option.

Both suites' sizes and prices — Regent's starts at $42,000 per person for a total of $252,000 at maximum occupancy — would be stunted by Four Seasons' promise of a 9,975-square-foot, $350,000 floating mansion.

But cabins with six-digit prices aren't unheard of.

While not a luxury cruise line, Royal Caribbean's popular three-floor townhouse on the new Icon of the Seas is being booked at an average of $100,000 a week — although it's about four times smaller than Four Seasons' largest.

Royal Caribbean and other mass-market cruise lines are beloved, in part, for their unlimited complimentary food options.

azteca yacht cost

Regent Seven Seas' all-inclusive fare also covers caviar, foie gras, and Champagne.

But don't expect any of these to be free on the Four Seasons I.

Breakfast would be complimentary. Lunch, dinner, and booze would not.

azteca yacht cost

The vessel's 11 restaurants and lounges would be priced similarly to Four Seasons' on-land properties. (A dinner entrée at its resort on the Caribbean island of Nevis — also one of the ship's destinations — ranges from $34 to $163.)

The pricing structure may sound odd to most cruise traditionalists. (Hey, at least WiFi would be "free.")

azteca yacht cost

But some of the ship's amenities could look familiar: Like most cruise liners, the Four Seasons I would have a pool, spa, and clubs for children and teens.

The company also promises a lounge and marina that will open onto the water, giving guests direct access to activities like snorkeling or windsurfing.

Four Seasons Yachts plans to take delivery of its $399 million vessel, now being built by famed Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, in late 2025.

azteca yacht cost

A second Fincantieri-built ship would join the hospitality company's fleet the following year. The next vessel would cost more than 400 million euros, about $429.2 million, Four Seasons says.

This isn’t Four Seasons' first foray into itinerary-based vacations.

azteca yacht cost

The company has also found "tremendous success" in its private jet-based "cruises," Alejandro Reynal, the president and CEO of Four Seasons, told BI in a statement.

Its 2024 vacation-by-air itineraries started at $135,000 for a 16-day Asia tour. Demand has been growing, he said, "signaling that luxury travelers are looking for immersive, exclusive, end-to-end travel journeys that allow them to explore the world with their favorite brands."

But its new ultra-luxe cruise arm would be entering an increasingly crowded luxury market, soon to be dominated by like-minded hospitality giants.

azteca yacht cost

High-end Aman Resorts and Orient Express plan to launch their own luxury cruises in 2027 and 2026, respectively.

Staying ahead of the competition, Ritz-Carlton debuted its first 149-suite Evrima yacht cruise in 2021, with a second 224-cabin ship scheduled to begin sailing later this year. Its least expensive itinerary is currently $5,100 per person for a six-night voyage from Barbados to Puerto Rico in early 2025.

Interested in a hotelier-owned vacation at sea but don't want to pay the luxury price tag? Margaritaville's cruise is an affordable $75 for two nights.
